Artist research - Neville Brody
Born 23 April 1957, Neville Brody is an English-born graphic designer, typographer, and art director. Best known for his work in such magazines as the face magazine, arena magazine and various record covers for artists. In addition, he is also famously known for creating the company research studies in 1994 and is a founding member of font works. Nowadays he is the head of communication of art and design department at the royal college of art in London
Interestingly Neville was born in Southgate and has always been a lover of fine art and painting. some may even say he had a slight obsession with art during the 1960s and 1970s, as he is known for stating that " He does not remember a time in his life when he was planning to do anything other than art or painting. before all of this though, he attended the michenden grammar school and actually studied A level art. Despite now being a graphic designer he surprisingly specialized in fine art at the time. in 1975 brody eventually decided to do a fine art foundation course at Hornsey college of art.
During the Autumn of 1975, brody started a three year B.A course in graphics at the London college of printing. despite being massively famous now, he still recounts that teachers use to say that his work was considered "uncommercial", mainly relying on everyday strategies instead of experimentation.
brody eventually began to experiment on his own self-made typography, heavily inspired by pop art and dadaism infleunce. This also led him down a road of record cover design towards a grudge and punk scene. The famous album cover micro-phonies by carburet Voltaire was an art directed by brody, featuring his infamous typography of a bandaged figure drawing liquid from the mouth
Despite all this brody primarily made his fame and a name for humself through being the art director for face magazine. It is said that the typical basic and structural rules of British cultural of art at the time, was changed by a more vibrant and bold approach from brody. Most of his designs emphasized a form of emotion to the readers and viewers. Many believe that brody pushed the boundaries of visual communication in all the media through expermnetation, development and challenging himself. to this day he extends and works on his visual language
In comparison to the other artists, brody is great and I find his work really interesting, but in relation to my work, I don't believe that it could work. don't get me wrong, similarly to Sagmeister the colours brody uses are impeccable and something I will strive for in my own work. But other than that, I personally don't believe I could benefit from his work. I think I will stick to the other artists when creating responses and developing them futehr. None the less this research has allowed me to further my development as to how to extend my work further to the end result.
