'Tis the season to unpack some stuff about Christmas from a minority perspective:

Christmas is a Christian holiday. The fact that many celebrate it in an irreligious way (which is valid!) does not change its origins, connotations, symbolism, nor what it has historically meant for religious minorities.

The idea that Christmas is "secular" (read: neutral) is a product of Christian hegemony and the blindness of many in Christian countries to the permeation of Christianity as "default" culture.

When someone says they don't celebrate Christmas since it's a Christian holiday, it is not actually reassuring or helpful to say something along the lines of "oh well it's just a secular day of family & presents for everyone! So you can celebrate it too!"

Though the above statement is usually well-intentioned, it is often distressing to hear because it is untrue and is erasing our lived experiences. The reflexive effort to make Christmas universal is a cultural reverberation of the millennia-old evangelizing effort to make Christianity universal, and as such, can be very uncomfortable for religious minorities.

Vox doesn't work out for shit. He would even forget to eat if Val and Vel didn't check on him at least once a day.

Val denies it saying that he is "naturally this good" but in reality he hits the gym quite often to be always in top shape and he does a lot of squats (to keep his ass round).

Vel publicly goes to te gym a lot to shoot video and to snap pictures. It's unclear if she also work out while she is there.

Regarding my last reblog about Christian hegemony and holidays. Something I find really annoying is that Germany is officially secular but Christian majority and keeps forgetting it's secular (stores closed on Sunday etc).

And then people get really weird about immigrants and refugees because they think people from other cultures and religions are a threat to us. It's mostly Muslims they're worried about. And they're like "they need to integrate themselves" and I'm like yeah sure learn the language etc. But then they actually don't mean integration they mean assimilation. They want people to if not convert then at least to stop being Muslim because "we're a Christian Country" (we're not, we're secular).

So they get upset when people continue being Muslim and speak their native language at home. But then there are some immigrants, usually with children, who decide to go an extra step and they start celebrating Christmas and Easter. Usually so that the children aren't isolated from their peers at school. I think that's fine as long as they're having fun, you know.

But then some of the same people who want integration to be assimilation still are weird about that because oh? Those strange foreigners celebrate our holidays?? Despite not having grown up with the religion?? But aren't they Muslim??? A Muslim with a Christmas tree??? How strange how wrong!!

So people really can't win no matter what they do.
