The study of historical and current interpretations of island biogeography and the interplay between natural and human history, and of marine mammal biology landed students and faculty on Grand Manan, New Brunswick this past weekend.
Learning by doing is kind of our thing at COA, so three days were spent searching for birds, whales, dulse farmers, fishermen, geologic wonders, doughnuts, and the many layers of stories that blanket this small island.
There’s nothing like having discussions from the stern of our research vessel, or at the base of a lighthouse to really feel the learning--the spray of waves, the whip of wind, the salt on your skin, the weight of histories. Where will your human ecology degree take you?

As we neared our anchorage in Nora, on the Italian 🇮🇹 island of Sardinia, we learned of patron Saint Efésio. This Roman officer was ordered to suppress Christianity on the island. Well, he did not comply because he turned Christian himself. When asked to renounce his new religion in 303 AD, he refused and was beheaded on the very beach (Nora beach) that we anchored for 4 nights. He then became the patron saint of the Cagliari and its surrounding cities. After being credited for eradicating the plaque in 1652, the island vowed to honor him every year till the end of time. 363 years later, here we are. Experiencing the festival honoring Saint Efisio. The pictures don’t do justice to the vibrant colors worn by the locals and the somber feeling in the air as women pray with their rosaries in hand. Rose 🌹 petals line the streets where over 100 horses 🐎 form a procession, followed by the statue of the Saint carried by oxen 🐂. A truly extraordinary sight. #thewindexpedition #almostfearless #boatlife #lifeatsea #liveabroad #sailing #travel #sailingaroundtheworld #sailingtrip #travel #2dads #gaydads #gayfamily #gays_with_kids #gayswithkids #twodadfamily #twodads #expeditionarylearning #homeschool #worldschooling #homeschooldad

Rote Learning vs. Radical Math Taiese Carson, Jessica Harrington, Christopher Kenny and Ariel Kramer | Capital City Charter School - Washington, DC
Every adult knows that middle school is hard. Asking students to embrace math in the way most math teachers historically do makes it even harder. Our math team is piloting a “Mathletes” curriculum to encourage high-performing students’ learning, but we want to tap into strategies for reaching struggling students, as well. To learn how educators from around the world are succeeding in their classrooms, we designed our fellowship to attend the International Congress of Mathematical Education (ICME) in Hamburg, Germany.
Attending ICME was vital for us because we learned research-proven strategies to improve our practice. The session on reaching all levels of students emphasized the importance of assigning a deep challenge during class and allowing students to appropriately struggle while solving the problem. We also observed the social impact of students sharing their work and building upon their knowledge base, including the errors. Presentations on teaching students with disabilities provided us with ideas for teaching students with a variety of needs, not just academic. Our favorite session dealt with kinesthetic learning by graphing equations with students’ body movements.
A surprising outcome was the idea of using math to create social justice. Several presenters discussed the historical, political and cultural dimensions of math and its relationship to society. One could easily view math as an isolated topic; however, it is very much embedded in the Presidential election, data teachers use to close the achievement gap and how our students view the world. One speaker closed out her speech by asking the audience how we can “teach mathematics so that people stop killing each other.” She asked participants to find ways to see the work of teaching math as a collective agenda that fosters relationships, builds students’ math identities and encourages the loving and doing of math across content areas.
Traditional professional development experiences focus on localized issues. At this conference, we observed cross-continent comparisons of math practices that promote student achievement. Through a variety of lectures from researchers and interaction with more than 3,000 educators from all around the world, we bonded as a team and established goals for our department and our students. South African mathematician Caroline Long wonderfully states, “Students in grades 6-8 are forced to make radical changes in their math learning and those who don’t make them are dependent on rote learning for the remainder of their math education.” We can either allow students to depend on memorization or we can help them see the love, creativity and inspiration math has to offer. Our team is ready to be the catalyst that sparks that change. We are ready to make the difference in students’ lives.

COA has a number of off-campus study opportunities that bring students to explore different tangles of human ecology in places like the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, the U.S. West and Southwest, Canada’s Newfoundland, Spain, France, Taiwan, and Japan. Broad subject areas of these programs include: language and culture, ecology/natural history, literature, water policy, art history, intercultural education, and food systems, to name a few.
In addition to our external partnerships and our more traditional study abroad programs, COA offers what are colloquially known as “monster courses.” These are term-long expedition-based courses which combine three classes to study the human ecology of a place, an idea, a movement, a trajectory. A lot of learning can (and does) happen in the classroom and between the pages of a book, but the rest of the learning comes with immersion and being physically present in a place.
This spring, faculty in performing arts Jodi Baker and lecturer in writing Dan Mahoney have brought twelve students to Spain on the Lorca Monster Course. This course is part of a three-credit expeditionary program focused on the life and work of Federico García Lorca and its unique relevance in the face of today’s cultural and political landscape. The three courses being offered are Lorca’s Theatre; The Poetry of Lorca; and Lorca in the New Century.
The above photos were sent to us from across the pond. We can’t wait to hear their stories when they return.

Gabriel is learning valuable lessons about marine science and teaching fellow world schoolers. He came up with the idea of preparing a presentation about the cool critters munching on the bottom of our hulls. We have been on the search to identify and learn more information about these fascinating organisms. Thank you to Zarbeco Microscopes, our marine biologist friend, Spanish museum resources and Wikipedia for helping us learn more about the fascinating things that exist right below us all the time. Do you know what these critters are? Experience is far more valuable than cultural accepted norms. Travel while you are young, while you have your kid(s) and while can still do things. Don’t worry about the money. Codman Academy Charter Public School
Building community to #StartWithKindness
At Codman, we know that learning happens when students feel safe, supported, and known. We strive to build a culture that is grounded in respect and trust. Throughout the school, we develop and sustain practices that bring the community together, promote shared understandings, and encourage all community members to support each other.
One of the foundations of our culture is the crew system, which comes from EL Education. The crew ethos is encapsulated by the phrase, "we are crew, not passengers"; students pull together to achieve individual and group goals. Crew gives each student a one-to-one relationship with an adult at school, as well as a consistent peer group. Across our K1-12 school crew members check in with each other about their academic progress, take part in teambuilding activities, discuss relevant issues, and engage in service projects in school and the larger community.
Crew is a core component to how we educate the whole student: mind, body, and character.
