2024: weeks 36 through 38
here are some things i had thrown into a note
beetlejuice beetlejuice (2024). cute! enjoyable but not mindblowing, but representative of a the middle class of films that no longer exists and which i miss dearly.
corridors of power (bbc, 2024). i'm still making my way through it, but if you're excited by seeing formerly powerful people say absolutely batshit crazy things about the exercise of that power, this might be for you too.
maria abramovich's this or that for GQ germany.
and now: LONDON (a chronological series of happenings)
airplanes: still miserable. i do think that we need to rethink international airtravel, because 23 hours in a plane is just ridiculous. nonetheless, in keeping with tradition, i had a pretty good 8-9 hours sleep, which i measured by having hotd on and every few hours waking up to wonder what all the screaming was about.
immediately spent money on clothes: it could not be helped. i've been staying walking distance from brick lane and these things happen. now i own a levis jacket that's as old as i am that fits me perfectly, as god intended.
food: part 1. took my cousin, who is also in london on holiday rn, to dishoom, per literally everyone's recommendation. you were all entirely correct.
food: part 2. abuelo in marylebone, served me some vanilla fig jam on a plate of random other foods that was, without exaggeration, the most delicious thing i have ever eaten. i literally asked if i could buy a jar. i could not, and i will feel sad about this for the rest of my life.
punished for the crime of being interested in a crime: the british museum. the parthenon room was closed, so what even was the point. anyway, i was generally unimpressed, with some exceptions (who amongst us is not moved by the existence of the rosetta stone, also a very good prints and drawings exhibition). but also my god, would it kill them to install some aircon (a sentiment i have felt applies to almost everywhere i have been in london thus far)?
very far away: kingsmeadow. opening week for my beloved chelsea, i could have wept from happiness. sat next to a local woman and her husband who come every week and talk about the team like they are each girl's parents and biggest stans, and it was entirely perfect.
did i mention: CHAPPELL FUCKING ROAN. yes, i queued for like five hours. i was 68th in the priority queue, which is behind the vips but in front of everyone else. all i did to get in that queue was buy an o2 sim card for £20, which i needed anyway. it was fun, everyone made friends, you could come and go as you pleased and we all made sure everyone got their spot back even as we were repeatedly shuffled up the side street behind the brixton o2. it was nice and wholesome and exactly what you would expect from the 99% of people who aren't assholes and also into this lovely woman. the rest is just a blur of askldhjalsk. objectively, she's not the best performer going right now, the show's not overly produced beyond a set list of songs and a bit of banter, and absolutely none of that matters in the face of how quietly charismatic she is and the absolutely insane set of pipes she's got. it was fucking intense, man. zero regrets about the time and money (oh my god, the money) it took to make this happen, delighted to have corrected my grievous mistake of choosing not to go to her show in melbourne last year.
i don't think my insurance covers this: ebiking across north and east london. first attempt was, uh. ill conceived, and i will never recover from seeing my phone go flying in one direction into the street as i went skidding along in the wet, still in the bike lane. phone's fine, i'm fine, not sure why i decided today was the day to ride a bike for the first time in 15 years. second attempt went much better.
sportsball 2: this time bigger! like the absolute turncoat that i am, i also went to arsenal's opener at emirates with 40k other people. sat next to a woman with her 13 year old daughter who come every few months and who noted early on, pointedly, that it was unfortunate we weren't sitting on the other corner, where we would have been closer to the WAGs. love this mum for this kid.
food: part 3. i just ate the most delicious burger i've ever eaten, wtf???
coming up: i fought a battle with booking.com, and i won, and tomorrow i'm off down the south coast for a few days. LA's roads didn't kill me, but london's might.

CARL WILLIAMS
CARL WILLIAMS
13 October 1970 – 19 April 2010
Underbelly
Carl Williams was an Australian criminal, drug trafficker and convicted murderer from Victoria. He was one of the main figures in the Melbourne gangland killings.
Williams was arrested with his father George in 1999 due to their illegal drug factory.
Williams was shot in the stomach by rival Jason Moran in that same year due to owing them money. Williams had killed rival drug traffickers, with the help of others in exchange for money. Williams wanted revenge on the Moran family which started the drug war. Williams befriended and employed Andrew Veniamin and hitman in 2003. Williams had Mark Moran killed in 2000 and then had Jason Moran and his associate killed which was witnessed by six children, aged 6 and under at a football game. The Moran’s father Lewis was murdered in 2004 inside a bar. Their associate Mark Mallia was also killed.
Williams pled guilty of the murders of the Moran brothers and Mallia. Williams had turned informant and struck a deal with Victorian police which led to his death.
Williams was locked up in Geelong Barwon Prison. Just before 1pm on 19 April 2010, was bludgeoned to death when another prisoner, Matthew Charles Johnson. Johnson approached Williams from behind whilst Williams was sitting at a table reading the newspaper. Johnson struck him on the head with an exercise-bike seat post. Williams was buried in a gold casket.

Dipped in Foreign Lands; An Exercise in Image Storytelling
The beginning of an offering of consolidated thoughts, photos, slices of life in between rocks, more photos, and general going.
Preface.
With an elongated farewell, a month passed before I departed the country. This time wasn’t spent finding accomodation, or sorting bank cards as it probably should have been. No, instead there was lots of relaxing, music, surfing, watching the NBA playoffs and organising of the hoards gathering dust in my parents cupboards. It wasn't until the final 2 days that the urgency of packing life into a bag for the foreseeable future became a priority.
It was done though, thanks to my loving housemates who provided a ‘jacpac’ for its potential to be filled. 2 jackets, 6 t-shirts, 2 brother-made garments, 2 shirts, 2.5 pairs of shoes, 2 cameras, a recording kit (regrettable now…), synthesiser (also marginal…), 400 leaves of paper, and a whole lot of other possessions that I probably didn’t need to pack. I felt sad to think of time apart from some things, but their absence will drift like the main themes of Toy Story (1998).
I write this now sitting at a glass dining table enclosed in a small house-in-progress situated on a piece of land in Almagreira. There are dogs barking next door, and many flies darting around the area. It has been 2 weeks since leaving Aotearoa, so I would like to tell you how I have been, and how it’s being seen. Through the lens of a digital camera (and the occasional iPhone pic).
1 Melbourne
As early birds get worms, I had an early flight to Naarm on 01/06/2023. Melbourne waited a bounty of friends, sandwiches, musical sharing, long walks, and pizza. A social extension on a Friday saw our Mouthfull ‘Live at Capers’ residence with a jovial group of deejays providing a space for listening, dancing - and a great meeting point for people to come together over some Mastika & Moussaka worthy of a trophy made of pure 1 million carat gold.
Tyler and I would also have so much fun playing songs on the radio for breakfast over 2 days (links below for listening). For breakfast we ate toast with avocado and tomato, and for breakfast radio we listened to a mixture of jazz, folk, new wave, ambient, worldly music with a sprinkling of a few classic ballads of course.
Sleeping on the sofa was comfortable after some cushion amendments and some wine. We would spend our days walking and talking in Carlton North, relaxing and imagining. Our best meal together was from the Sri Lankan spot, Citrus, where you can find a banquet of vegan smorgasbord for $15.
Once the event was said and done, a recovery in the mornings light was aided with a walk to the felafel shop to meet again with Olive. Hearing of her news in between bites brought great happiness and love.
The following day, I met with Poppy. We were to find a place in Brunswick for a coffee; opting for some breakfast too at Kines. While we were there, I would think of Denzel for his obsession with the cafe. His voice would riddle through echoes from the past. After our breakfast, we walked up and down, crossing Sydney road 3 times, turning corners, and entering discount food stores to browse the obscure flavours of pringles and chocolate. The day was hot and the walk long. Navigating our bodies to Ceres we rummaged through bike parts and found entertainment in a cat in the chicken coup. It was a pleasant walk, except the moderate panic when I left my jacket on a park bench with all money and devices embezzled in the pockets.
After all the catching up, walking, wandering; I caught a train down to Torquay to visit an old friend, Isabelle. It was strange down there considering last time was around 5 years ago staying in a resort not dissimilar to vaudeville. However, we would go for a long walk to discover an amazing mosaic sundial (designed by artist Claire Gittings - whom I have no known lineage to - but am probably related somehow).
With conversations over a cafe breakfast of my conviction against mining, we would enjoy each others' company in a true taurus manner. I would stay in her house near Marshall and meet her love, and we would have a Spanish soup next to a brazen colour changing fire in a brazier. A casket of red wine was ordered for $10 and delivered promptly, while it wasn't exactly even middle of the road it was a fine drink.
Finally, a pizza evening at Leonado's with Harrison & Andre. Some of the best pizza you will try, the Italian community in Carlton is a reliable source. Twas a welcome carbohydrate to carry forward into the nights digestion on what was to be my last night in Naarm. I bought Tyler a Toblerone to thank him for my stay, and the constant trickling of happy travel wishes would soon be finished with a final embrace.
And so it was, as it was, an extended layover in a city being taken over by sandwich shops and wine bars. It was to be the takeoff point to the north, an expansion to signify the changing of place from previous programming. The world outside was luminous and the air filled with a freshness known to mother nature so much more well than ceiling fans.

The Importance of Planning Ahead for Car Parking
Planning ahead for car parking in Melbourne's CBD can save you a lot of stress. The city’s busy atmosphere means that finding a spot, especially during peak hours, can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. By checking online resources and apps dedicated to car parks melbourne cbd, you can identify available options before hitting the road. This foresight allows you to choose the most convenient location and avoid frustrating last-minute decisions. Consider booking your space in advance if possible. Many facilities offer pre-booking services at discounted rates. This not only ensures you have a guaranteed spot but also provides peace of mind as you navigate the city. Additionally, understanding peak times helps immensely. If you're aware of when traffic is heaviest or events are taking place nearby, you'll be better equipped to plan your arrival accordingly and avoid unnecessary delays.
Utilizing Public Transportation Options
Melbourne boasts a well-connected public transportation system that can save you both time and money. Trams, trains, and buses make it easy to navigate the CBD without the hassle of finding car parks. Trams are particularly convenient. With stops scattered throughout the city, hopping on a tram can take you directly to shopping precincts or dining hubs. Plus, they run frequently, reducing your wait time. Trains offer another excellent option for those coming from outside the city. The extensive rail network connects various suburbs to central Melbourne seamlessly. Don’t forget about buses either; they're perfect for reaching areas not covered by trams or trains. Using public transport means you won’t have to stress about parking fees or availability—just enjoy your visit!
Alternative Methods of Transportation
When visiting Melbourne CBD, exploring alternative transportation options can be a game-changer. Instead of relying solely on car parks in Melbourne CBD, consider the benefits of public transport and other methods. Melbourne boasts an extensive tram network that makes navigating the city convenient. Trams are frequent and cover various routes, making it easy to reach your destination without worrying about parking. Additionally, trains and buses offer additional layers of accessibility for those coming from surrounding suburbs. For a more personal touch, cycling is becoming increasingly popular among locals and visitors alike. With dedicated bike lanes throughout the city and numerous bike-sharing programs available, you can enjoy fresh air while avoiding traffic snarls. Walking is another excellent way to experience everything Melbourne has to offer. Many attractions are within walking distance of each other, allowing you to soak up the city's vibrant atmosphere while getting some exercise. Exercise and Adventure with Recumbent Cycling – Wade's Story
Wade, an adult with cerebral palsy, talks about his experiences with recumbent cycling around Australia
Maintaining physical fitness is important for everyone, and even more so for people with cerebral palsy who are able to exercise. For me, cycling is my exercise of choice. Cycling provides many physical health benefits that are especially crucial to people with cerebral palsy:
Muscle Strength and Tone: It improves overall muscle function, particularly strengthening the lower body muscles such as the calves, thighs, and glutes.
Joint Mobility: Cycling is a low-impact exercise, which is easier on the joints than running or high-impact aerobics, making it suitable for people with joint concerns or arthritis.
Improved Coordination: Cycling improves balance, coordination, and gait, which can help prevent falls and injuries.
Boosts Immune System: Regular exercise like cycling can strengthen the immune system and make you less susceptible to illnesses.
Cardiovascular Health: Cycling is excellent for heart health. It strengthens the heart muscles, lowers resting pulse, and reduces blood fat levels, thus decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
I started cycling during university in the US state of Colorado, as it provided me with a much easier and quicker way to get to classes and get around in general. The hi-tech adaptive equipment of today didn’t exist back then, so I rode around on a big red 3-speed ‘granny’ tricycle fitted out with mountain bike tyres to help me get traction in the winter snow. It was very heavy and certainly wasn’t built for what I put it through, but it got the job done and helped me keep fit at the same time!
Fortunately, there have been many advancements in the design of adaptive cycling equipment in the years since I was in uni, and more manufacturers have begun to mass produce adaptive cycles due to an ever-increasing market.
Pictured: At the start line for my first Around the Bay.
Pictured: Climbing up the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne.
Two years later, I persuaded yet another friend to sign up with me for the 50 km Around the Bay, with the main attraction for her being cycling across the West Gate! However, on the eve of the event, organisers changed the route due to high winds, and cyclists weren’t allowed to ride on the bridge. They instead had us cycle 60 km along the foreshore. The weather conditions turned out to be the worst in the history of Around the Bay, with wind gusts of up to 100 kph. It wasn’t exactly what my friend and I signed up for, but we’re proud to finish a horrendous, wind-blasted journey in which one-third of the participants didn’t cross the finish line.

Reduced Risk of Injury
A swimming pool can be a safety hazard, particularly for families with young children or pets. By removing the pool, you can eliminate this risk and create a safer environment for your family.

Cost Savings
Maintaining a swimming pool can be expensive, particularly if you live in an area with high water and energy costs. Improved Mental Health
Spending time in nature and being physically active can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. Exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve mood, and increase self-esteem. By removing your pool and creating more space for outdoor activities, you can take advantage of these benefits and improve your overall wellbeing.
Alternative Exercise Options
If you're used to swimming for exercise, there are many alternative options available. Here are some examples:
Running or jogging: Running is a high-impact activity that can help you burn calories and build endurance. You can run outdoors or on a treadmill, depending on your preferences and the weather conditions.
Cycling: Cycling is a low-impact exercise that can help you build strength and cardiovascular fitness. You can cycle on roads, trails, or in a gym, and there are many different types of bikes to choose from, such as road bikes, mountain bikes, and stationary bikes.
Yoga or Pilates: These low-impact exercises focus on building strength, flexibility, and balance. They can be done at home or in a class setting, and there are many online resources available to help you get started.
HIIT workouts: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves short bursts of intense activity followed by periods of rest. This type of workout can help you burn calories, build strength, and improve cardiovascular fitness. There are many HIIT workouts available online or in a gym setting.
