i think it would be fun (for me and my schadenfreude boner) if Gortash was around for business when Kressa Bonedaughter was fuckin around with Durge. Maybe he's not in the workshop, and certainly he had no idea that his Durge was here as a plaything; he's here to discuss the new plan with Ketheric, or simply just trying to avoid Orin.
He never liked the place; necromancy isn't in his purview, and Durge hated necromancers anyways. But something about the place is holding him there. Some familiar undertone to the undead gibbering, at the same time compelling and repulsive. Kressa leaves her workshop, not bothering to shut the door all the way, and within, Gortash can see some poor sod laid out on the table. The floor is sticky with blood and bile, the victim's intestines pulled from their body and hung on a rack beside them, still attached at the ends. As he watches, the hands twitch unconsciously, the jaw snapping and gasping for air. Their head flops to one side, still gnashing with all the coordination of the shambling dead, and Gortash freezes. Part of their skull is crushed, with something twitching amongst the exposed grey matter, but he knows the eyes staring in his direction. There is no spark of recognition, no hint of life, but he knows those eyes.
He does not return.

behold: my least favorite string of words in the entirety of Tears of the Kingdom.
#totk critical#totk#tloz#gerudos#when will my brain return from the imprisoning war....#I just stumbled upon it again doing research yesterday and....#there's so many layers as to why it aggravates me#that it's spoken from the perspective of a masked woman as to embody all gerudos while removing her own identity#in the context of her loyalty to rauru as well#that giving birth to a bad man makes you responsible for his actions (he's not a toddler anymore he's an adult ok)#or more metaphorically that your initial conflict with hyrule makes you Sinful and cursed and you must Feel Bad Now *shame shame*#that she's passing on that ageless guilt with no expiration date onto the shoulders of *a teenager* and it's considered GOOD???#(wind waker shaking crying right now)#ALL OF THAT to prop her up to swear her loyalty to the people planning to go murder their ancient king (sure he's a Bad but still???)#using some sort of weird ass original sin scenario that is arguably not any gerudo's fault but Ganondorf's#(or if it is then it's not shown so ???)#the vibes are so so so off I just really !!!!! don't like#this is stuff like this that makes me reject that it's a good story about alliances being formed in good faith#because this is just manipulative#maybe the alliance angle everyone's stronger together was the intention but the execution is another story entirely#gerudos never benefited from ganondorf's actions also#so it's not even a case of making reparations for the way you benefit from systemic oppression due to your ancestor's actions#gerudos won literally nothing in ganondorf's war#apparently he even subjugated them if they weren't on his side (like.... a king would.... not to excuse it but the double standard here)#so it just instrumentalizes the ageless sin of motherhood + suffering under a bad monarch billion of years ago for war#so uhhh.... yeah that's not... that's pretty bad imo#the gerudo girl could have went “hey girl this man used us and still hurt us to this day let's kick his ass once and for all”#and this would have been a different story entirely#a little cheap but not.... That Bad

i personally think the reason why so many people struggle to like guren is bc he’s v representative of humanity. of us. how many of us could honestly say we wouldn’t sacrifice everything for our family of choice? what makes guren hard to like is that he forces to confront this “less moral” side of all of us because he does. he sacrifices the world, the entire human race, to get his squad, his family back.
it’s cute when yuu says it for mika bc we’ve seen their characters as children, but we’re first introduced to guren as an adult. he’s 24 in vampire reign, and since that’s how he’s first introduced, he sticks in our heads best at this age. we forget that he was 16 when he lost shinya, sayuri, mito, goshi, and shigure⎯the same age yuu was when he chose mika over the world (kind of. they’re working on a plan, but it’s pretty obvious that if it comes down to it, he absolutely would choose mika over everyone.) but because we’re used to seeing guren as an adult and a high ranking military officer, there’s this expectation that he’s responsible enough to not make that kind of decision.
and yet, we watch him continue to make those decisions to bring back humanity without losing his family, because that’s his modus operandi. at the end of the day, there’s is no one more important to him than his family.
and honestly, how many of us can truly say we wouldn’t have done the same thing in his place?
(i’d also like to point out that i was around 14 when i first found the series and caught up on everything⎯i didn’t like guren v much the first time around and thought he was honestly, quite annoying. at 19, and a whole pandemic later, i think i understand where he’s coming from. he’s quite brilliantly written in that way, the definition of “you’ll understand when you’re older.”)

I really am so sad I don't like isat. The themeing was very good
#isat critical#like the ''we must be prepared for the destruction change will bring'' shit came back so hard at the end#specifically with loop context/destroying themself to become a star. to become loop#and the fact that when siffrin deviated from the script. finally changed the way he performed his play (act 5)#that's when it broke#and he had to ''destroy'' his friends to do it. In a way. When all he knew how to do was fight/snapped#and it's like. of COURSE loop is how siffrin was able to escape. Because escaping the loop meant siffrin had to save/love themself#value their own life and not just their friend's#to realize that they couldn't do it on their own. that they needed their friends to help them out of it. they needed support#that being loved was more than saying the right thing or doing the right quest#isat is so strong structurally/thematically/plot-wise and I personally despise it comedically/character/dialogue writing-wise#and the whole game is dialogue. like isat is the most conflicting experience I've had in a while#Where I hate actually reading the dialogue and I don't like the character writing but I love thinking about it's themes. like hello#that sucks i'd rather have it just be one or the other#*aaravos voice* you must live life in the grey#Like the king and siffrin foil is my beloved. And I absolutely adore how the King's story was ended.#But I dislike siffrin as a character and I also hate most of the game's execution#like every emotional beat is made anticlimactic by the lack of subtext and the constant repetition#(literally laughed out loud at ''my house my country my HOME!'' like we said the same thing 3 times babe. the whole game is like this)#isat has a huge case of ''we wanted conflict but didn't give characters any real flaws to be able to do it''#idk. Everyone repeated over and over that they don't touch siffrin because he's uncomfortable with it. Over and over.#And yet he's still like. ''It's because Isa finds you disgusting'' Huh. Idk if we did the work for Siffrin to come to that conclusion#Like literally Isa never does anything to even imply that. All he's ever done is sing Sif's praises. makes me feel crazy#Like ''oh he views everyone else as just a character!! a pawn!'' except no he doesn't. he barely did in act 5#and even in act 5 he's horrified at how he treated odile. like. we did not commit to that. I got sad lukewarm flowey#Do not even get me started on odile's ''I think it's so cute you trapped yourself in time and went crazy because you love us''. Girl#Like no we can. We can commit. Siffrin did bad things and going crazy was bad. Odile wasn't wrong to be upset.#Like why not 'That was terrible of you to say. But I won't leave you—you still love people who make mistakes- because what else is there?'#like we got so close with the worst loop being the permanent loop. Siffrin is still loved no matter what. But idk. Felt brushed off#oh isat...you strange being...

lp Claude sentencing Jennette's sister to death, marrying Jennette to her foster-brother and revealing aunt Rosalia's involvement in the conspiracy only after Athy is buried, could also be Claude getting rid of every source of familial love Jennette had left after the death of her parents, so that he was the only one she could turn to.

Annual reminder that Aang wasn't a terrible dad, that one episode was badly written and had poor perspective. Aang was a busy, working dad who had a lot of stuff to do, and then suddenly his third kid was a full-on Airbender and he was literally the only one qualified to teach this baby, so then he finally had an excuse to put his family before his duties ("My family IS my duty now, suckers!!!"), and so Kya and Bumi were all "What the heck, Dad???" because they were now teens (iirc) and they missed out on all that stuff.
It was basically Aang going from "my family has 20% of my time" to "my family has 40% of my time". Still not enough, probably, but Aang could finally go and explore his own culture without feeling guilty about leaving the rest of the world to fend for itself.

when i was watching some of a pentiment playthrough the other night & reflecting on brother piero as kind of a model of the ideal role that the protagonists play (& foil/counterpart to the antagonist, by extension, as the protagonists are) as people trying to discover & tell the truth but having to be aware that they're also constructing a story & even if they feel they've come up with the most Truthful Story in some fashion they also have to be aware this will still only be interpreted by others who may see different things in it & want different things out of it, the limitations of their roles & relationships with those around them as well as just being another person among people regardless of how they're viewed....piero looking at andreas's completed masterpiece & praising that he's depicted things as they are, or more specifically how andreas has seen them to be, rather than what we might want to see; & piero before & after this always qualifying his input/opinion with like "but you don't have to listen to me" "but it's just the opinion of one old monk" etc sort of Humble Monk Perspective that is in earnest (rather than like passive aggressive or anything lol) & like this approach is still subject to being questioned & considered when piero being quite as So Be It Accepting Of Whatever Happens & uninterested in control or even exerting much influence over things is part of what andreas jumps in over like hey i personally like this guy plus he indeed probably didn't do this & is just being sacrificed b/c Someone Must Die to punish tassing for flouting authority (killing this baron for being so terrible like well could've been any of us) but then naturally that doesn't make piero necessarily Wrong in any way either, not wrong of You to have anything done To You. just the game also has its perspective & points to make but also isn't trying to do it from on high Over You, the player
#pentiment#such that [closes eyes deep breath over the frustration in checking reddit comments for info about like so anyone have a list of who in#tassing is present in which acts / is gone in which future acts] & there's ppl talking like This Is A Mystery With Correct Answers#okay whatever but when someone was like ''i don't think it was ferenc b/c when he's executed: a Truly Guilty party wouldn't act like that''#kill Me why don't you#well anyway. brother piero....that moment at the. hands washing place where andreas has the dialogue choices#to be like He Was Wrong You Know & defend piero (who will be like Haha It's Fine. You Are My Pride) like it's just such a fun little moment#having it Fixed like this like andreas already has this Significance to his relationship with piero / cares about him#preceding & despite whatever player choices; like immediately being introduced to that in the first set of dialogue options#i.e. the abbot told me to spend less time talking to brother piero. save it for the loquarium fellas (gernot would/did not say this)#imagine a good humored gernot....one must imagine: abbot matthias#thinking of sister illuminata's reluctance to Opine / Comment also similar to & More So than piero; as a humble / devout nun#but you can get to that point she'll comment on matthias like to err on the side of / too much kindness is to stumble at the feet of god#what was i talking about. that yeah anyway of course it's Plot Relevant that protecting piero Must be andreas's motivation but#pentiment does plenty of like. we don't have to See the relationship in some ''overarching'' way to interpret the emotions / meaning alread#there through what is shown of the Emergent & Observable To Us dynamics & character actions/responses to whatever feelings at play#again re: the themes of being aware of the limits of what's communicated / shown to us inadvertently or on purpose /#our interpretation & perspective....pentiment you are so fun. the player i was watching having such lively responses like#the act two dream that reveals this context/info about andreas withheld even from the player till then while there's been Relevant Instance#already that the player has been free to interpret & judge while unknowingly Lacking this info/context. one of my fave maneuvers of the gam

Book: Irene Adler “The Woman” is a famous opera singer and actress, and one of four people to ever beat Sherlock Holmes in a battle of wits. Adler loves her husband dearly and only keeps hold of the blackmail she has over the Duke in order to keep herself safe, and will never reveal the photo to the public as long as he leaves them alone. Holmes never shows any romantic interest in Adler, or anyone for that matter, and only ever admires her for her wit and cunning.
Every adaption after: Irene Adler is a femme fatale, hopelessly in love with Sherlock Holmes, and some combination of a wanted criminal and dominatrix. Adler is allowed to beat Holmes ONCE, in order to teach him humility, but after that he needs to beat/save her in order to adhere to the status quo, and undo the lesson Book!Holmes learnt in the first place. This is somehow more feminist.

I'm so tired of seeing takes about U.S. politics from people who lack understanding about how the branches of government, the electoral college, and redistricting work and affect us. Please return to high school Civics, I am begging you.
