i think it would be fun (for me and my schadenfreude boner) if Gortash was around for business when Kressa Bonedaughter was fuckin around with Durge. Maybe he's not in the workshop, and certainly he had no idea that his Durge was here as a plaything; he's here to discuss the new plan with Ketheric, or simply just trying to avoid Orin.
He never liked the place; necromancy isn't in his purview, and Durge hated necromancers anyways. But something about the place is holding him there. Some familiar undertone to the undead gibbering, at the same time compelling and repulsive. Kressa leaves her workshop, not bothering to shut the door all the way, and within, Gortash can see some poor sod laid out on the table. The floor is sticky with blood and bile, the victim's intestines pulled from their body and hung on a rack beside them, still attached at the ends. As he watches, the hands twitch unconsciously, the jaw snapping and gasping for air. Their head flops to one side, still gnashing with all the coordination of the shambling dead, and Gortash freezes. Part of their skull is crushed, with something twitching amongst the exposed grey matter, but he knows the eyes staring in his direction. There is no spark of recognition, no hint of life, but he knows those eyes.
He does not return.
#durgetash#durge#the dark urge#gortash#bg3#heeeeheeheeheehee#he goes home. he throws wine at a painting and has several people beaten and executed. he does not feel better.#he convinces himself that it must be different. he fooled himself with wishful thinking. he was so desperate to see durge#that he INVENTED their face on a random thrall. yes that must be it. it has to br

behold: my least favorite string of words in the entirety of Tears of the Kingdom.
#totk critical#totk#tloz#gerudos#when will my brain return from the imprisoning war....#I just stumbled upon it again doing research yesterday and....#there's so many layers as to why it aggravates me#that it's spoken from the perspective of a masked woman as to embody all gerudos while removing her own identity#in the context of her loyalty to rauru as well#that giving birth to a bad man makes you responsible for his actions (he's not a toddler anymore he's an adult ok)#or more metaphorically that your initial conflict with hyrule makes you Sinful and cursed and you must Feel Bad Now *shame shame*#that she's passing on that ageless guilt with no expiration date onto the shoulders of *a teenager* and it's considered GOOD???#(wind waker shaking crying right now)#ALL OF THAT to prop her up to swear her loyalty to the people planning to go murder their ancient king (sure he's a Bad but still???)#using some sort of weird ass original sin scenario that is arguably not any gerudo's fault but Ganondorf's#(or if it is then it's not shown so ???)#the vibes are so so so off I just really !!!!! don't like#this is stuff like this that makes me reject that it's a good story about alliances being formed in good faith#because this is just manipulative#maybe the alliance angle everyone's stronger together was the intention but the execution is another story entirely#gerudos never benefited from ganondorf's actions also#so it's not even a case of making reparations for the way you benefit from systemic oppression due to your ancestor's actions#gerudos won literally nothing in ganondorf's war#apparently he even subjugated them if they weren't on his side (like.... a king would.... not to excuse it but the double standard here)#so it just instrumentalizes the ageless sin of motherhood + suffering under a bad monarch billion of years ago for war#so uhhh.... yeah that's not... that's pretty bad imo#the gerudo girl could have went “hey girl this man used us and still hurt us to this day let's kick his ass once and for all”#and this would have been a different story entirely#a little cheap but not.... i personally think the reason why so many people struggle to like guren is bc he’s v representative of humanity. of us. how many of us could honestly say we wouldn’t sacrifice everything for our family of choice? what makes guren hard to like is that he forces to confront this “less moral” side of all of us because he does. he sacrifices the world, the entire human race, to get his squad, his family back.
it’s cute when yuu says it for mika bc we’ve seen their characters as children, but we’re first introduced to guren as an adult. he’s 24 in vampire reign, and since that’s how he’s first introduced, he sticks in our heads best at this age. we forget that he was 16 when he lost shinya, sayuri, mito, goshi, and shigure⎯the same age yuu was when he chose mika over the world (kind of. they’re working on a plan, but it’s pretty obvious that if it comes down to it, he absolutely would choose mika over everyone.) but because we’re used to seeing guren as an adult and a high ranking military officer, there’s this expectation that he’s responsible enough to not make that kind of decision.
and yet, we watch him continue to make those decisions to bring back humanity without losing his family, because that’s his modus operandi. at the end of the day, there’s is no one more important to him than his family.
and honestly, how many of us can truly say we wouldn’t have done the same thing in his place?
(i’d also like to point out that i was around 14 when i first found the series and caught up on everything⎯i didn’t like guren v much the first time around and thought he was honestly, quite annoying. at 19, and a whole pandemic later, i think i understand where he’s coming from. he’s quite brilliantly written in that way, the definition of “you’ll understand when you’re older.”)
#this doesn't even touch on how horrendous his mental state must have been#esp after his dad's humiliating execution#and whatever toxic mess mahiru dug them into#he had to watch both his father and shinya die in front of him#and regardless of whether you ship gureshin or not#they have a special connection#it's even clearer in resurrection when he starts panicking#shinya means a LOT to him#but i digress this is a guren post not a gureshin post#owari no seraph#ons#seraph of the end#catastrophe at 16#ons manga#ons spoilers#owari no seraph spoilers#seraph of the end spoilers#resurrection at 19#ichinose guren#shinya hiragi#guren ichinose#yūichirō hyakuya#mikaela hyakuya

I really am so sad I don't like isat. The themeing was very good
#isat critical#like the ''we must be prepared for the destruction change will bring'' shit came back so hard at the end#specifically with loop context/destroying themself to become a star. to become loop#and the fact that when siffrin deviated from the script. finally changed the way he performed his play (act 5)#that's when it broke#and he had to ''destroy'' his friends to do it. In a way. When all he knew how to do was fight/snapped#and it's like. of COURSE loop is how siffrin was able to escape. Because escaping the loop meant siffrin had to save/love themself#value their own life and not just their friend's#to realize that they couldn't do it on their own. that they needed their friends to help them out of it. they needed support#that being loved was more than saying the right thing or doing the right quest#isat is so strong structurally/thematically/plot-wise and I personally despise it comedically/character/dialogue writing-wise#and the whole game is dialogue. like isat is the most conflicting experience I've had in a while#Where I hate actually reading the dialogue and I don't like the character writing but I love thinking about it's themes. like hello#that sucks i'd rather have it just be one or the other#*aaravos voice* you must live life in the grey#Like the king and siffrin foil is my beloved. And I absolutely adore how the King's story was ended.#But I dislike siffrin as a character and I also hate most of the game's execution#like every emotional beat is made anticlimactic by the lack of subtext and the constant repetition#(literally laughed out loud at ''my house my country my HOME!'' like we said the same thing 3 times babe. the whole game is like this)#isat has a huge case of ''we wanted conflict but didn't give characters any real flaws to be able to do it''#idk. Everyone repeated over and over that they don't touch siffrin because he's uncomfortable with it. Over and over.#And yet he's still like. ''It's because Isa finds you disgusting'' Huh. Idk if we did the work for Siffrin to come to that conclusion#Like literally Isa never does anything to even imply that. All he's ever done is sing Sif's praises. makes me feel crazy#Like ''oh he views everyone else as just a character!! a pawn!'' except no he doesn't. he barely did in act 5#and even in act 5 he's horrified at how he treated odile. like. we did not commit to that. I got sad lukewarm flowey#Do not even get me started on odile's ''I think it's so cute you trapped yourself in time and went crazy because you love us''. Girl#Like no we can. We can commit. Siffrin did bad things and going crazy was bad. Odile wasn't wrong to be upset.#Like why not 'That was terrible of you to say. But I won't leave you—you still love people who make mistakes- because what else is there?'#like we got so close with the worst loop being the permanent loop. Siffrin is still loved no matter what. But idk. Felt brushed off#oh isat...you strange being...

the fact that MIKE NESMITH knew that the monkees would at one point just be so comfortable giving each other platonic kisses in their home if one of them asks is the craziest thing ever.
#the monkees#he wrote it in the damn 90s special!!#mike nesmith#peter tork#davy jones#micky dolenz#i’m sorry#i know i’ve posted about this before it’s just so important#the monkees say consent is good#you can always say ‘no thanks!’ and your friend should respect you#but is so common in their household micky doesn’t even blink when davy says ‘kiss’#like they don’t even say ‘can i have a kiss’ or ‘do you want a kiss’ or ‘i want a kiss’#nope they’ve gotten so comfortable davy just can go ‘kiss’ and that must mean he wants a kiss and is not referring to the band#and this was written by MICHAEL NESMITH#the special is very much an odd experience (mike you were not very good at tv writing but that’s okay babe it’s hard) but that is so good#and wonderful#that they give little platonic kissss#because of course they do!#he made the executive decision that at some point even DAVY stops looking for a girlfriend and just settles down to be a pissy housewife#in that lil apron in the beginning#they just are all livin together because they don’t need anything else!

lp Claude sentencing Jennette's sister to death, marrying Jennette to her foster-brother and revealing aunt Rosalia's involvement in the conspiracy only after Athy is buried, could also be Claude getting rid of every source of familial love Jennette had left after the death of her parents, so that he was the only one she could turn to.
#Claude is a jealous and possessive man#in wmmap he feels threatened by Felix acting as a potential father figure#and prevents Athy from making friends with other noble girls when she's young#Felix was his bosom brother and Claude still terrorized him for it#it would seem obvious that if the person who took something away from Claude that he believed belonged rightfully to him#was someone he already hated Claude would kill them for it#there were probably multiple factors why Claude agreed to Athy's rushed execution and Ijennette's wedding#Claude elevating Ijekiel from sibling to Jennette's husband is especially interesting#he must have guessed the Alpheus were only using Jennette but he didn't stop it#when he gave ijennette their blessings he was actually neutralizing Ijekiel as a threat (another source of familial love)#wmmap#who made me a princess#sbapod#suddenly became a princess one day#the lovely princess

Annual reminder that Aang wasn't a terrible dad, that one episode was badly written and had poor perspective. Aang was a busy, working dad who had a lot of stuff to do, and then suddenly his third kid was a full-on Airbender and he was literally the only one qualified to teach this baby, so then he finally had an excuse to put his family before his duties ("My family IS my duty now, suckers!!!"), and so Kya and Bumi were all "What the heck, Dad???" because they were now teens (iirc) and they missed out on all that stuff.
It was basically Aang going from "my family has 20% of my time" to "my family has 40% of my time". Still not enough, probably, but Aang could finally go and explore his own culture without feeling guilty about leaving the rest of the world to fend for itself.
#poor dude probably had all kinds of mental issues#also literally everything else about his dadhood has been outstanding#his son gets a high rank in the navy#his lesbian daughter gets to go do her thing#tenzin had it hardest of all the kids#we can also get into the whole part where Aang's whole culture separated parents from their kids#so he wasn't exactly raised with a child-to-biological-parent bond himself#the perils of culture clash...especially with a devoted water tribe mother#you've got a culture that says ''Family is EVERYTHING parents will teach their children for LIFE''#meeting a culture that says ''Everyone in the world is your family so you have to treat them equally''#.....gosh that story really needs to be explored more#and they could NOT have delivered it more clumsily#or wrapped it up more frustratingly#''here we are lamenting all our insecurities and inner doubts but LOOK THIS FAMILY PHOTO SHOWS US HAPPY WE MUST HAVE BEEN HAPPY''#I mean...they were#but it was also poorly executed#legend of korra#tlok#atla#how to tell the casuals from those who take this seriously#''aang was a bad dad'' do you even READ SUBTEXT

when i was watching some of a pentiment playthrough the other night & reflecting on brother piero as kind of a model of the ideal role that the protagonists play (& foil/counterpart to the antagonist, by extension, as the protagonists are) as people trying to discover & tell the truth but having to be aware that they're also constructing a story & even if they feel they've come up with the most Truthful Story in some fashion they also have to be aware this will still only be interpreted by others who may see different things in it & want different things out of it, the limitations of their roles & relationships with those around them as well as just being another person among people regardless of how they're viewed....piero looking at andreas's completed masterpiece & praising that he's depicted things as they are, or more specifically how andreas has seen them to be, rather than what we might want to see; & piero before & after this always qualifying his input/opinion with like "but you don't have to listen to me" "but it's just the opinion of one old monk" etc sort of Humble Monk Perspective that is in earnest (rather than like passive aggressive or anything lol) & like this approach is still subject to being questioned & considered when piero being quite as So Be It Accepting Of Whatever Happens & uninterested in control or even exerting much influence over things is part of what andreas jumps in over like hey i personally like this guy plus he indeed probably didn't do this & is just being sacrificed b/c Someone Must Die to punish tassing for flouting authority (killing this baron for being so terrible like well could've been any of us) but then naturally that doesn't make piero necessarily Wrong in any way either, not wrong of You to have anything done To You. just the game also has its perspective & points to make but also isn't trying to do it from on high Over You, the player
#pentiment#such that [closes eyes deep breath over the frustration in checking reddit comments for info about like so anyone have a list of who in#tassing is present in which acts / is gone in which future acts] & there's ppl talking like This Is A Mystery With Correct Answers#okay whatever but when someone was like ''i don't think it was ferenc b/c when he's executed: a Truly Guilty party wouldn't act like that''#kill Me why don't you#well anyway. brother piero....that moment at the. hands washing place where andreas has the dialogue choices#to be like He Was Wrong You Know & defend piero (who will be like Haha It's Fine. You Are My Pride) like it's just such a fun little moment#having it Fixed like this like andreas already has this Significance to his relationship with piero / cares about him#preceding & despite whatever player choices; like immediately being introduced to that in the first set of dialogue options#i.e. the abbot told me to spend less time talking to brother piero. save it for the loquarium fellas (gernot would/did not say this)#imagine a good humored gernot....one must imagine: abbot matthias#thinking of sister illuminata's reluctance to Opine / Comment also similar to & More So than piero; as a humble / devout nun#but you can get to that point she'll comment on matthias like to err on the side of / too much kindness is to stumble at the feet of god#what was i talking about. that yeah anyway of course it's Plot Relevant that protecting piero Must be andreas's motivation but#pentiment does plenty of like. we don't have to See the relationship in some ''overarching'' way to interpret the emotions / meaning alread#there through what is shown of the Emergent & Observable To Us dynamics & character actions/responses to whatever feelings at play#again re: the themes of being aware of the limits of what's communicated / shown to us inadvertently or on purpose /#our interpretation & perspective....pentiment you are so fun. the player i was watching having such lively responses like#the act two dream that reveals this context/info about andreas withheld even from the player till then while there's been Relevant Instance#already that the player has been free to interpret & judge while unknowingly Lacking this info/context. one of my fave maneuvers of the gam

Book: Irene Adler “The Woman” is a famous opera singer and actress, and one of four people to ever beat Sherlock Holmes in a battle of wits. Adler loves her husband dearly and only keeps hold of the blackmail she has over the Duke in order to keep herself safe, and will never reveal the photo to the public as long as he leaves them alone. Holmes never shows any romantic interest in Adler, or anyone for that matter, and only ever admires her for her wit and cunning.
Every adaption after: Irene Adler is a femme fatale, hopelessly in love with Sherlock Holmes, and some combination of a wanted criminal and dominatrix. Adler is allowed to beat Holmes ONCE, in order to teach him humility, but after that he needs to beat/save her in order to adhere to the status quo, and undo the lesson Book!Holmes learnt in the first place. This is somehow more feminist.
#Adler you were done so dirty#although her case is so funny#Holmes knows he can’t force Adler to reveal the location of the photo#but deduces it must be in the house so she can collect it at a moments notice#so his big plan is to get HER to reveal it for him#by executing the most fucked up plan I’ve ever read#orchestrating an audience to bombared Adler as she gets out of a carriage#have them pretend to start a fight#get ‘injured’ protecting her and taking arvantage of civil hospitality that will require her to let him into her home#and while he’s lying on the sofa he has Watson throw a cracker through the window#shout FiRE at the top of his lungs#where Holmes will immediately chase after Adler in the middle of the chaos#because in his own words ‘people instinctively grab what they value most when there’s a house fire’#spots Adler grabbing the photo#then runs out the door explaining to the staff he feels much better know and thanks the host for her hospitality#then the next morning they go back to the house to grab the photo while she’s out#only to find out she and her husband already fled#because Adler was smart enough to realize#something batshit insane happened last night so maybe they should move their plans forward and just runaway to America already#good job Holmes#that was your most subtle work to date

As a comic nerd I need a way to properly convey the rage I feel whenever I see a character that 100% has a secret identity and their costume has FINGERLESS GLOVES
#like come on guys this basic stuff 101#i know it looks cool but you must resist#it's also kind of like how in superhero movies the characters never wear their fucking masks#because executives think that audiences will immediately demand their money back if they don't see big name actor man's face#fucking mcu peter just always casually revealing his real name and face to every mf he meets#anyway#rant#comics

I'm so tired of seeing takes about U.S. politics from people who lack understanding about how the branches of government, the electoral college, and redistricting work and affect us. Please return to high school Civics, I am begging you.
#just as an example because i've been seeing takes about this:#no biden cannot do anything about roe v. wade#he cannot issue an executive order (executive orders must be based in pre-existing law)#he can propose and promote and sign federal legislation but he cannot pass it singlehandedly#that job belongs to congress#rinse and repeat ad nauseum for other issues#we have fucking checks and balances#crack open a damn civic literacy book. order the ap gov textbook from amazon if you feel so moved.#just learn something before you say something stupid
