given everything, i think we as a fandom need to really internalize that – even for those of us who prefer characterization derived from canon as much as possible – there is, at this point, increasingly no such thing as one true characterization. this is true even outside of discussions of personal read of a character. in this case, i am referring solely to the effect of the changes and edits larian has made, and continues to make, that affect characterization.

given the frankly somewhat unprecedented effect of these continuing changes and tweaks of characterization, it also raises the question of what counts as “canon”. and, at least in my personal determination, the answer is nothing so simple as it is in the case of many other mediums and source materials.

canon for each individual is going to mean something different — not just in the sense of their own canon playthrough, but also the version of the “canon” characters they experienced based on when they played the game.

as an example of this: my formative experience of halsin – my favorite character – was almost entirely prior to patch 5, a patch that made some fairly significant changes to his characterization. i do not personally feel myself required to change the character i love just because the game did after its full release. therefore, in most cases, when i am talking about and considering the character, it is in his pre-patch 5 iteration.

i’m sure there are others in similar positions, whether with the same character or other characters, and so it feels increasingly necessary to open these discussions.

I don't like the "Israhell" moniker.

I mean I get it. It's pithy, it's useful, and if you're skirting censorship it will help you speak about this without worrying as much about having your content hidden/demonetized. But I can see the smirk in the corner of people's mouths when they speak about "Israhell"'s crimes in twenty years. Maybe even only ten. Five. A year. I say "I see it" and what I mean is "I fear this is where pithy nicknames lead".

Words are important. Names are important. It's important to keep the true names of the perpetrators in our mouths and in our minds as we watch our leaders fail utterly to hold them accountable for their atrocities.

so there's a difference between "representation" and "queer art". mainstream blockbusters, specifically those belonging to large franchises, are primarily produced to make money: they are designed and written to appeal to the widest possible demographic. this target demographic does not REALLY overlap that much with the group of people who would like to see accurate representations of the queer experience.

queer characters in the type of franchise entertainment we think of as "mainstream blockbusters" today will never be anything more than what's palatable to their target demographic. they will always be cardboard cutouts of characters, whose experience and personality is never shaped by their queerness other than, possibly, a bland "i overcame persecution" made as simple as possible.

queer art, on the other hand, is full of the specificity of the queer experience. i think of TELL ME IM WORTHLESS by alison rumfitt or the MAKE THE GOLF COURSE A PUBLIX SEX FOREST project (half collaborative art, half activism), to give two examples from this past year. both of them are centered on queerness and the experience of being queer. the average person in the franchise target demographic, however, is going to look at both projects and go "what the fuck is that? degenerates!"

now. i'm not saying that queer art can't make money or that there's a shibboleth of some kind that means a work of art is queer or not queer. i am saying that the content of franchise mainstream blockbusters (an extreme flattening of personal experience in order to appeal to as many people as possible) and the content of queer art (an expression of a specifically queer lived experience) are mutually exclusive. that's what the tweets are about.

(there's further nuance here: the definition of queer art is a topic for literally tens of thousands of pages and decades of debate; the "is EEAAO a blockbuster or not" argument [i haven't watched, and anyway it's not a franchise blockbuster]. but this i think gets my point across)
