Just thinking bout how bartender!simon would react to to someone leaving their number with a tip for the reader. Just imagine he’s going through the tips at the end of the night and sees a ripped piece of paper with a lil note and number scrawled on it clearly meant for her👀
You must not have seen it - otherwise, you would have pranced over to the bar and gloated about yet another phone number. This one catches him off guard since you hadn't announced it.
It's alright, though. You and Ghost had worked out a system for cock-sure customers like this one. It acted as a coping mechanism for Simon, letting his frustration towards your universal attractiveness out - you thought it was just a fun way to cock block them, and assumed Simon thought the same.
At the end of your shift, you sit at the bar, Simon leaning over it and his phone between the two of you. He texts the number with a general "hi, it's me from the bar :)". He lets you send a few lines to the guy - you atart off simple, slowly sending more and more off-the-rails comments, like "What kind of car do you have? I had to sell mine so the police wouldn't trace me back to the crime." Or "I'm actually under a contract here. I owe the bartender a favor for getting rid of my ex-husband. I can't quit until I'm sixty."
After you've had your fun, and the bar begins to wind down for the night, you head home and leave the rest of the conversation in his hands. He scrolls through what you've said so far, chuckling at the strangeness in your creativity. He then sends his own series of texts. "If you treat me nice, I can show you where I hide the bodies." "Oh, I can't eat at Sevvy's anymore - I got banned after the incident." "Did you know that it's relatively easy to kill someone by breaking their nose? Well, that one guy was easy. Maybe everyone's different."
It's not too long after that when his messages stop going out, and a notification generates on his screen, saying "this number has blocked you." Simon considers it a success.
In the office upstairs, all of the receipts with mobile numbers scribbled on them are pinned to the corkboard by the monitors. Price gives it a disapproving look every time he sees it, but he only becomes impressed with how quickly they begin to take up space on the board. Every Saturday afternoon, before the pub opens, you and Soap go up there and choose a victim at random. He enters the number into several spam websites, like job recruiters or the farmers almanac. Goes on something like "Roommate Finder" and replies to a bunch of postings with the number.
When Price decides to comment on it, Soap gives him a shrug. "Should ne'er have left 'is contact information in a public area."

a/n: HEIBDEJFB i’m so excited for this one don’t even. I know it’s short, leave me alone 🥲
warnings: cussing, mentions of cheating/pregnancy (not reader), maskless!simon riley
summary: The heat was something else. With a heavy heart and nothing to lose, you’ve ditched your ex-fiancé to chase your childhood best friend across the country to a small town in a wildfire prone area of the United States - Pine, Arizona. It’s nestled in a valley and is where your best friend, Alex Keller, calls home. He’s following his passion, his dreams, and it soon enough, you’re following it too; but the flames are getting too close and soon you’ll be in the line of fire of your best friend’s superintendent, John Price, and his assistant, Simon Riley.

Alex Keller was a man of his word.
With his phone now slipped into his pocket, he moved with light steps from his locker and across the room to his Superintendent’s office. It was getting late, most of his fellow Hotshots had already gone home for the night. He was almost set out to leave too, having already put on his street shoes and his bomber jacket when you had called him. You’ve been his best friend since the first grade, essentially his second sister; he’d do anything to help you, so when you had called, his heart broke and anger flooded his body.
“Where are you gonna go? Your mom’s not the best choice-“
“Please tell me I can crash with you.”
“What?”
“Please. I’ll even work in your little firefighter station too.”
“You can’t just join a Hotshot crew, Y/N-“
“I know as much about fire and firefighting as you do, maybe even more.”
“That doesn’t mean you have the physical capabilities for it! It’s grueling, it’s exhausting-“
“Oh, I know you are not trying to mansplain your job to me.”
“What? No! No, it’s just-“
“A little hiking and extra upper arm workout is nothing. Put in a good word, would you?”
“I mean, I can- But be for real, you can’t uproot your life! You love being a fire watch.”
“Yeah, and I loved Justin. Shit can change, Alex.”
Alex knocked on the door, hearing faint voices of approval granting him entrance. He opened the door, revealing the warm light that had been on for a few hours. At the desk sat his Superintendent, John Price - a man with expertly groomed facial hair and the drive of a wildfire. He was physically and mentally maintained; he was everything a Superintendent should be. Across from him sat Alex’s Assistant Superintendent, Simon Riley - a man with the sense for fire science and for weather. The more physically maintained of anyone in the crew, he was the best at keeping the 141 Hotshots on their toes. The two of them worked incredible as a team and were the reason why the Pine Fire Department in Arizona was allowed their own Hotshot crew - Alex respected them.
Both looked to Alex, equally surprised he was still in the firehouse.
“What do you need, Keller?” Simon was the first to speak, Alex took a breath.
“Look, I know you guys are still looking for a new Hotshot, I may have a possible candidate.” He placed his hands on his hips, watching as Simon looked to Price.
Price’s eyebrows furrowed. “Go on.”
Shit, how do I tell them that she’s just leaving her job ‘cause of that douchebag? “Uh, so she actually does- did, did fire watch in Yellowstone, she was a Hotshot for like… a year before? Anyway, she’s uh, she’s coming to live with me and wanted to know if she could interview.”
Price looked to Simon, who looked back to him. With a knowing glance shared between them, Price looked to Alex.
“She do drugs?”
Alex shook his head.
“Convicted of a crime?”
“No sir.”
Price’s next question was as blunt as it could’ve been. “Did she kill somebody?”
Alex blinked for a moment, stuttering, “Well-Well no! I mean she might, she has a good reason right now.”
Simon snickered, “Doesn’t everybody?”
Price glared at his Assistant Superintendent before he looked back to Alex. “When’s she gonna be here? ‘Cause we might be mobilizing soon.”
Alex looked at his watch. “She’s on a plane now.”
His Superintendent looked pleased before looking at Simon, then to his own watch.
“Have her be here by 9 tomorrow morning.” The man’s blue eyes were sharp as they looked back up to Alex. “If she washes out, it’s your ass on the line.”
“Yes sir.”
The Hotshot still stood in the office, the Superintendent looked to his Assistant, who spoke. “Why are you still here, Keller?”
Alex cleared his throat. “As a good employee, I’m saying that she would be a great hotshot. As her friend…”
Both Price and Simon’s eyebrows raised.
“She’s a bit… intense.”
Tumblr media
“You son of a bitch!”
“Y/N, I swear! I don’t know a Natalie!”
A vase shattered against the wall next to your fiancé’s face, he shouted in fear - but you wanted him to feel your fucking rage.
“You are a fuckin’ liar!”
A mug nearly hit him in the face, only to explode into a million pieces next to him. “Stop!”
You weren’t done. No, you were far from done. With a quick hand, you grabbed your former favorite framed photo of your engagement - a time where you were truly happy. It was a stark contrast to the scene now; you had made your way through the kitchen into the living room, throwing things to keep your fiancé, Justin, far away from you. “You got her-“ You chucked the picture frame at him, it barreled against the wall and shattered on impact. “fucking pregnant! You got a girl pregnant!”
“I didn’t!” He tried to take a stop forward but your hand was on another picture frame, ready to throw it, so he paused as he held his hands out. “It’s not fucking mine! I don’t know her!”
Another picture frame was thrown at him, he moved out of the way as you made your way to the front door. Your hand fished into your jacket pocket as you threw your backpack over your shoulder, throwing the small keyring at Justin. He took two steps closer, but you ripped open the front door.
“Where the fuck are you even gonna go?!” He shouted, face red with anger. You gave him a nasty look.
“Somewhere you won’t fuckin’ find me, ‘cause we are over. We will stay over, so if you harass me,” You snarled at him, taking a step backwards and out of the house. “So help me God, you’ll be meetin’ Him faster than you can say sorry.”
And you slammed the door behind yourself, hands shaking and tears threatening to fall. You had no one here in Montana, no one where you could hide and you sure as Hell weren't going to have your mother say "I told you so". With a shaking hand, you dug your phone out of your pocket and dialed the one person you always knew you could count on.
With two rings, he picked up and tears pricked your eyes. "Alex."

Eh mental health is annoying. Buying & cooking cheap low-FODMAP diet is annoying. My best top note for now is I'm using this blog to practice writing. I need more practice in it. I only know business, accounting & economics stuff. Its stupid stuff. Theres too much actual fraud everywhere that its annoying
Also I use mobile so formatting sucks cause Nvidia GPUs, or Arch dont like tumblr site. Or tumblr site dont like tumbkr site
Also also I 100,000% support all my fellow ones-and-zeros and their identity. Everyone is welcome here.
Except transphobes/zionist/long list of others but you get it. I'll help harrass any of those types endlessly if someone wants to tag me, and bring me in on an argument like that friend you call for backup with fights
Im unhinged so who's to say exactly what will end up here but this is also a completely public blog to me friends, family, hell, even acquaintances i dont give a fuc.
Blog should be expected to be roughly as child-friendly as simpsons or bobs burgers. But also boring like a civics/economics lesson sometimes. Yay
--------
I (and my husband) am ex mormon. Its a weird thing. Look into it if you havent recently. Realllllyyyy look into. Takes time to figure it all out in this fuckin fucked up world.
I just moved a year ago. Didnt watch the US stock market as much as I normally do. Had my first snowstorm 10 weeks ago, that was.. fun to handle while ill prepared. About 6 weeks ago I was hopping back on the market and notice its a huge tech bubble about to pop and all the conditions Ive been warned about my whole career imply this is not good. Just took a little more thinking & digging and I'm a little too confident to stop talking about it now.
(Oh I'm also care-free as fuc so I dont really read or desire to change past posts more than lil-nitpicks. More informative for the reader & myself-in-the-future-reading that way)
And I'm not kidding I do love feedback & questions. Its a very public blog tho so I get that part for sure.
If you search "life story" in my tags I had that pinned for a min Im just moving shit around rn
Being poor sucks. Will write more on that later.
---------------
First of all-- the exact timeline of an "economic shock" is literal insanity. Dont worry about the exact timing of any of this-- just know its doomed to happen soon.
Here are some effects I predict of this upcoming economic downturn
If anyone comes across any sources for these events that support my arguments please feel free to add in comments, reblogs, etc.
This concise list is mainly for my own reference, but it would be great to add to it if any one has something to add!
0.5. US Stock market collapse-- I have no desire to try and predict this one exactly. Too many conspiracies are actually correct about this big guy. Lets just say 7 US Tech stocks are worth 25% of the entire worlds market, roughly. "Too big to fail"-- I believe is the phrase
1. Corporate (slightly later will be residential by extension) real estate crisis: currently way too overvalued. Most of the houses, land, & urban corporate property we see could stand to decrease by about 60-90% from its current price.
2. Bankruptcy crisis: similar to the after-effects of the 70s inflation-- we can expect to see a huge wave of bankruptcies affecting a variety of business: from the micro-self employed; to the small business with leased buildings; to the largest corporations who commit massive accounting fraud & hope to escape accountability in time
3. Bank runs-- there is an extremely high overreliance on the Federal Reserve, who does not have good control over this situation. Once it becomes clear that there is a crisis (we call this a catalyst event)-- bank runs for physical cash are a surety. Hard to say how long a crisis like this might last. I should ask my siblings who lived near the SVB bank crisis hotspot (but those were rich fucks they do their "bank runs" over the phone)
3.5. Global currency collapse, which takes effect in every single local, state, & national economy at slightly different times. This means prices lower. Much lower. But takes time
4. Whatever the fuck the geopolitics is gonna do???. Its weird. You got Russia wanting to invade Europe? (Look at global economic forum 2024) Trump wants to let them. Biden wants to be an establishment corporate ass. North Korea has changed its #1 public enemy to South Korea (dont remember my source but it was a couple months ago). USA is stationing more troops in Taiwan, but probably only because of semiconductor technology?
The scope of our global financial woes are larger than can be explained in any of our lifetimes. Its much, much closer to pre-revolution France or the late 1920s. Big change is coming. Itll be soon
5. More to come

Anticipation Soars as Scottish Swifties Prepare for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Edinburgh
Tumblr media
Toglenn, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons Excitement is reaching a fever pitch as more than 200,000 Taylor Swift fans are set to converge on Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh for her highly anticipated Eras tour concerts on June 7, 8, and 9. The build-up to these sold-out performances has been marked by a flurry of activities, including the decoding of the singer’s hidden song messages online, pre-parties, and a host of enthusiastic preparations. Carla McCormack, a dedicated fan, shared her excitement, saying, "As a Swiftie in Scotland, it's just really exciting to have her coming here first." Last month, McCormack taught an introductory evening class about Swift at Glasgow Clyde College, aimed at helping parents and other companions understand what to expect from the Eras experience. “It’s a different level in terms of concertgoing,” she explained. “There will be people who have spent a lot of money on tickets and don’t know what to expect.” In her class, students were taught the customary audience responses for the tour, such as chanting “Taylor you’ll be fine” during a specific line in "Anti-Hero," and raising hands in a heart shape during "Fearless." McCormack also provided a rundown of significant events in Taylor Swift’s career, including her public disputes with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, her history of re-recording albums due to issues with Scooter Braun, and a brief on her notable ex-boyfriends. Another avid fan, Elena Soper, is looking forward to the diversity of the crowd at the Edinburgh shows. “We saw how difficult it was to get tickets to shows in the US, so when they went on sale for the European tour, people went a bit wild and registered for lots of dates just in case. I know people coming from Paris and Poland as well as Scots,” she noted. Speculation is rife among fans about a potential “big announcement” during one of the Edinburgh shows, possibly involving the release of another re-recorded album. Local businesses and attractions are also getting into the spirit of the event. Scots-Italian ice-cream maker Equi’s has introduced a special Swiftie Swirl flavor for the occasion. Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura has dedicated a giant kaleidosphere to Swift, and Tynecastle Park, near Murrayfield, will host all-ages Swiftie Bingo sessions. To accommodate the influx of visitors, Edinburgh city council has arranged for marshals equipped with mobile phone chargers to assist concertgoers, and local residents have been informed about road closures around the stadium. Despite the excitement, the event has also brought some challenges. Accommodation prices have surged, with hotels, B&Bs, and short-let flats fully booked months in advance and single-night rates increasing by nearly 50%. This situation was underscored by reports from BBC Scotland that several homeless people were relocated to Aberdeen and Glasgow due to a shortage of local accommodation. The housing charity Shelter criticized this move as a “blatant injustice,” highlighting the competition between tourists and homeless individuals for available places to stay. Edinburgh city council stated that they are working to find appropriate alternative accommodation for those affected. Dave Fawbert, the creator of the UK-wide Swiftageddon club night, will be hosting pre-parties in Edinburgh. He remarked that the Eras tour represents a significant moment for Taylor Swift and her fans. “It has been this perfect storm – for Taylor herself, it’s a victory lap for her 20-year career, after she belatedly got the critical acclaim she deserved, and it’s her first tour since Reputation in 2018,” he said. “For the fans, people are still coming out of the pandemic and everyone is looking for shared experiences. This is the biggest thing I’ve seen since the heyday of Michael Jackson in the late 80s and early 90s. It’s a joyous moment and people are ready to celebrate and go mad for a month.” As the concert dates draw nearer, the excitement and anticipation among Scottish Swifties are palpable. The combination of Taylor Swift’s global appeal, the elaborate preparations by local businesses, and the sheer scale of the event promises an unforgettable experience for all attendees. VPN settings mobile
Title: Essential VPN Settings for Mobile Devices: Secure Your Online Privacy
In an age where cybersecurity threats loom large and online privacy is increasingly at risk, utilizing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on mobile devices has become paramount. Whether you're accessing public Wi-Fi networks, streaming content, or simply browsing the web, VPNs offer a layer of encryption that safeguards your data from prying eyes. However, to ensure optimal security and performance, it's essential to configure your VPN settings correctly on your mobile device.
First and foremost, choose a reputable VPN provider with a user-friendly mobile app. Look for providers that offer strong encryption protocols, a strict no-logs policy, and a wide server network to ensure reliable connections.
Once you've selected a VPN provider, it's time to configure your settings. Start by enabling the kill switch feature, which automatically cuts off internet access if the VPN connection drops. This prevents your data from being exposed to potential threats when switching between Wi-Fi networks or transitioning from cellular to Wi-Fi connections.
Additionally, consider enabling the split tunneling feature, if available. This allows you to route specific app or website traffic through the VPN while directing other traffic through your regular internet connection. Split tunneling can help optimize speed and performance while still maintaining privacy for sensitive activities.
Furthermore, regularly update your VPN app to ensure you have the latest security patches and features. Many VPN providers release updates to address vulnerabilities and improve performance, so staying up-to-date is crucial for maintaining optimal security.
Lastly, take advantage of any additional security features offered by your VPN provider, such as ad-blocking, malware protection, or multi-hop connections for added anonymity.
By configuring your VPN settings thoughtfully and staying vigilant about updates and security features, you can enjoy a safer and more private mobile browsing experience. Protect your online privacy with the right VPN settings and browse with confidence wherever you go.
VPN options smartphone
A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a popular tool used to protect online privacy and security. With the increasing reliance on smartphones for various activities, it is essential to explore VPN options for smartphones to ensure safe and secure browsing experiences.
One of the most common VPN options for smartphones is using a dedicated VPN app. These apps are user-friendly and can be easily downloaded from the app store onto your device. They offer encryption for your internet connection, making it challenging for hackers to intercept your data.
Another VPN option for smartphones is setting up a VPN connection manually. This method requires a bit more technical knowledge but allows you to customize your VPN settings to suit your specific needs. By configuring a VPN connection manually, you have more control over the level of security and privacy you require.
Moreover, some VPN services offer both free and premium options for smartphone users. While free VPNs provide basic security features, premium VPNs offer advanced encryption protocols and additional server locations. It is essential to choose a reliable VPN service that values your privacy and does not log your online activities.
In conclusion, utilizing a VPN on your smartphone is crucial in today's digital age to safeguard your sensitive information from cyber threats. Whether you opt for a dedicated VPN app, set up a VPN connection manually, or choose between free and premium VPN services, ensuring your online privacy and security should be a top priority when browsing the internet on your smartphone.
VPN configuration guide
Title: A Comprehensive VPN Configuration Guide: Safeguarding Your Online Privacy
In an era where online privacy is increasingly under threat, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have emerged as indispensable tools for safeguarding personal data and ensuring secure internet connections. However, configuring a VPN may seem daunting to many users. Fear not, as this comprehensive guide will walk you through the process step by step.
Choose a Reliable VPN Provider: Start by selecting a reputable VPN service that aligns with your needs, considering factors such as server locations, encryption protocols, and compatibility with your devices.
Download and Install the VPN Application: Once you've chosen a provider, visit their website or app store to download the VPN application onto your device. Follow the installation prompts to set it up.
Create an Account: After installation, you'll typically need to create an account with the VPN provider. This may involve providing an email address and setting up a password.
Configure VPN Settings: Launch the VPN application and navigate to the settings menu. Here, you can customize various options such as choosing your preferred server location, enabling features like Kill Switch for added security, and configuring protocol settings.
Connect to a VPN Server: Once you've configured the settings to your liking, it's time to connect to a VPN server. Simply select a server location from the list provided by the VPN application and click connect.
Verify Connection: After connecting to a server, verify that your connection is secure by checking for the VPN icon in your device's status bar or by visiting a website that displays your IP address.
Optional: Advanced Configuration: For more advanced users, many VPN applications offer additional configuration options such as split tunneling, DNS settings, and protocol customization.
By following these steps, you can configure your VPN with ease and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your online activities are protected from prying eyes. Stay secure, stay private, with a properly configured VPN.
VPN software mobile
Title: Enhancing Mobile Security with VPN Software
In an era where mobile devices are integral to both personal and professional life, ensuring their security is paramount. Virtual Private Network (VPN) software has emerged as a crucial tool in safeguarding mobile data and privacy.
VPN software encrypts internet traffic, creating a secure tunnel between the user's device and the internet. This encryption prevents unauthorized access to data, shielding sensitive information from cyber threats such as hacking, snooping, and identity theft. For mobile users, VPNs offer an added layer of protection, especially when connected to public Wi-Fi networks commonly found in cafes, airports, and hotels. These networks are notorious for their vulnerabilities, making users susceptible to cyber attacks. By using VPN software, mobile users can browse the web, access confidential files, and communicate securely, irrespective of their location.
Moreover, VPNs enable users to bypass geo-restrictions and censorship imposed by certain websites or governments. With VPN software installed on their mobile devices, users can access region-locked content, stream their favorite shows, and browse the internet freely, without limitations.
Choosing the right VPN software for mobile devices is essential. Factors such as encryption strength, server locations, connection speed, and user-friendly interface should be considered. Additionally, reputable VPN providers offer features like automatic kill switch, split tunneling, and multi-platform compatibility, enhancing the overall user experience.
While VPN software enhances mobile security and privacy, it's crucial to use it responsibly. Users should be aware of potential risks associated with free VPN services, as they may compromise data integrity or sell user information to third parties. Opting for paid VPN subscriptions from trusted providers ensures reliable service and comprehensive protection.
In conclusion, VPN software is a valuable asset for mobile users seeking to fortify their security and privacy. By encrypting internet traffic and bypassing geo-restrictions, VPNs empower users to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and peace of mind.

the timeline
in 2021, a high-ranking priest in the US conference of catholic bishops (or USCCB) named jeffrey burrill was outed as gay and forced to resign. the USCCB said they had obtained (1) proof that he was using grindr and (2) location data tying burrill's movement to several gay bars. they did not explain how the hell they figured this out, only that the information was obtained from a data vendor and spanned several month-long periods between 2018 and 2020.
a couple key notes here about data vendors/brokers: it's not uncommon for advertising exchanges to scrape together a bunch of junk data and sell it to random third parties. it's usually demographic data for audience-sorting purposes—and even the demographics themselves are generally predictions based on behavior, like how I look up enough arthritis-related keywords that google thinks I'm a senior citizen.
which is to say that them accessing data from a broker isn't hard to believe, but absolutely nothing in that dataset would come close to the kind of smoking-gun proof that gets a priest fired for visiting gay bars. this isn't like a phone book full of names and addresses, it's billions of rows of data each saying that publisher <abc> sold an ad through exchange <xyz> in auction number <00000> at <$X> price to a device with <list of generally anonymous characteristics>.
(truly sensitive info can and does get sold to data brokers, but it's not the norm, and it's usually sold by publishers rather than by ad exchanges. in your average bid request, there's not really even a standardized way to include much more demographic info than some basic age/gender stuff and the device's estimated location—nor are any of these data points strictly required.)
(I've already lost the plot here, but if you're curious, almost all programmatic advertising uses a protocol called the OpenRTB API. if you're curious what exactly gets passed through these real-time bids, you can read the API reference in its entirety, although god only knows why they chose to stick it all in a fucking PDF.)
anyway. also in 2021, an ex-adtech guy read this news, rightfully was like "okay but how the hell did they actually figure that out" and then wrote a detailed substack post speculating exactly how the USCCB might've been able to pull this shit off. the technical explanations here are what I find the most interesting (worth reading the whole thing imo, but I'll give a condensed version below); however, he poses a very salient and completely unanswered question (emphasis mine):
None of this requires ninja-level technology or skills, but it’s way beyond the level of the Googling around or spreadsheet hacking of your average normie conspiracy-theorist or journalist. Particularly if the hacker had done all this analysis for several targets over years of time; that’s a considerable amount of work and expense (this data certainly isn’t free, and they bought a lot of it). Somebody wanted Burrill and possibly others to go down. That’s the real mystery in this story: Who? Why?
point that won't make sense until later: in the middle of 2021, apple rolled out iOS v14.5, which among other things made the IDFA ("identifier for advertisers") something that users have to opt into rather than something that's enabled by default. android followed suit not long after and let users choose to opt out of the android equivalent.
another brief tangent: an IDFA is a unique alphanumeric string associated with a particular physical device. the string itself contains exactly zero identifying information (other than, technically, specifying whether you're on an android or iOS device because each ecosystem uses slightly different identifiers)—this is useful since in-app environments don't use cookies. it lets advertisers figure out that user #12345678 who viewed an ad in their mobile browser is the same user #12345678 who viewed an ad in candy crush.
in 2022, I guess burrill was able to find work again, so that's nice.
in 2023, wapo did some digging and found out that the group behind burrill's outing is a colorado-based nonprofit called "catholic laity and clergy for renewal." among the revelations:
the nonprofit's stated goal is "to 'empower the church to carry out its mission' by giving bishops 'evidence-based resources' with which to identify weaknesses in how they train priests." what this amounts to is basically just spying.
burrill almost certainly wasn't the only guy they were spying on, although it's unclear at this point if the nonprofit's actions got anyone else outed or fired.
the nonprofit has spent at least $4 million dollars so far, although it's also unclear exactly much of that was spent on buying brokered data versus like... idk, anything else you'd use to spy on priests?
the ex-adtech guy's "but how the hell did they do that" speculation was pretty much exactly correct.
the technology
the ex-adtech guy's substack post explains everything beautifully, so I don't just wanna reiterate everything he's already said. however, I do worry that some of the finer points might be lost on anyone who isn't already familiar with the architecture underpinning everything.
first, a very brief programmatic explainer:
when you load a webpage that's coded to contain an ad, the publisher (owner of the webpage where the ad will be shown) puts the ad inventory (fancy term for "ad space with no ad in it yet") up for sale on a real-time auction marketplace. this announcement that an auction is about to occur is called a bid request.
the bid request follows a particular protocol called the OpenRTB protocol (remember that earlier tangent?); it's both a trigger for an auction to occur and an object that itself contains data about (1) the type of inventory being sold and (2) the user to whom the ad will be displayed—though not much data at all. page 15 of this PDF outlines what a standard BidRequest object looks like.
this is not a form of user data per se, but one of the fields in the BidRequest object is the name/ID of the publisher where the ad is being served. which makes sense
this BidRequest object is sent out to various ad exchanges who buy and sell ads on behalf of brands. brands can bid on the ad inventory being offered; whoever makes the highest offer, naturally, wins.
the winning brand gets to display their ad creative (fancy term for "the banner or video or whatever") on the page that you loaded.
this whole process takes roughly 100 milliseconds, give or take—so fast that you probably didn't even realize that the ad wasn't preselected when you loaded the page.
two important things to internalize here: (1) the BidRequest object contains a very, very small amount of data about each user and device who triggered a bid request, and (2) the BidRequest object gets sent to a lot of parties, not just the one who wins the auction; this is one way that data can trickle up to third-party data brokers.
you with me still? take a breather if you need to.
so. if you're a catholic nonprofit with four million dollars to burn, you can buy huge bundles of data from random parties who get their hands on it. this data is mostly full of random numbers that aren't useful outside of specific contexts.
but remember my other tangent about the IDFA? the unique identifier that's assigned to mobile devices? you can use the IDFA to determine that X number of bid requests across Y number of apps happened on the same device—it won't tell you who owns the device, just that all of the bid requests came from The Same Guy. (there's some other info you can scrape together there, like what operating system the device in question is running, but most of it isn't especially juicy imo.) you'll also see the date and time that each bid request occurred.
except I sort of lied, because there is one more elephant in the room: location data.
check out page 29 of this PDF. the Geo object included in each BidRequest includes some basic location data about the user/device at the time of the bid request, and it's actually pretty fuzzy: you can include the latitude and longitude if you're confident they're accurate, but they're not often accurate, so a lot of time you're just getting the city/state/zip. (on one hand, creepy, but on the other hand, the picture we've put together so far is still just "One Guy in boston has an iphone and he uses both candy crush and google chrome.")
grindr's whole schtick requires accurate location data, so let's assume the latitude and longitude data for grindr bid requests is accurate enough to include in our bid requests.
let's put all that together, then:
we can sift through billions of rows of data and chunk them into distinct users based on each user's distinct IDFA.
for any given user, we can look at the information from each bid request and see the names/IDs of the app where the inventory was offered. (in other words, was the user's device trying to display an ad in candy crush? in tiktok? in grindr?)
in most cases, for any given user, we can see the location data of each bid request. (of the bid requests triggered in grindr, where was the user?)
for any given user, we can see the timestamp of each bid request. (of the bid requests triggered in grindr at this date and time, what date and time did they occur?)
so if we're really, really inclined to put all this together (and let me stress how infrequently anyone would ever do this), we'd know that One Guy was using grindr in X location at Y time/date. we don't know this guy's legal name, or his grindr username, or his email address, or where he lives, or what he does for a living, or whether he's gay, although we do know that he uses grindr so that might be a freebie.
and this, THIS is why the catholic nonprofit's whole shit is so goddamn diabolical—their whole operation hinged on knowing burrill's real-life location with extreme precision
I'll let mr. substack take over here (again, emphasis mine):
As reported, Burrill is a diocesan priest in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Where is he every Sunday morning around 10:30 a.m.? Giving mass at St. James the Greater Catholic Church on 11th Street is where (or at one of a few Catholic churches). Sure, if we were to draw a circle a couple hundred meters wide around St. James, and tally up the unique set of IDs that appear there on Sunday mornings, we’d turn up hundreds. But which one is always there, month after month?
Modern databases allow easy construction of geo-based queries of the form: “find all rows with data within x meters of this lat/long, and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sundays”. Also, who’s always at whatever rectory Eau Claire diocesan priests reside in, plus whatever public occasions or conferences a senior cleric such as Burrill would surely attend? The geo data can be massive and noisy, but as with any noisy signal, average over enough data and the signal starts coming through. The attacker probably had to look at years of data to unambiguously narrow this down. This attack was long in the making, and took months (at least) to pull off.
TL;DR: a catholic nonprofit was able to out a gay priest because they sifted through a metric fuckton of ad data to pinpoint any devices that (1) triggered bid requests to display ads on grindr or other hookup apps and (2) followed an extremely specific location pattern that the nonprofit could corroborate against the movement of any priests whose locations they were manually tracking.
which is creepy as hell, but also worth noting that it only worked because they already had tabs on him in the real world and an enormous amount of time and money.
the takeaways
the amount of information flowing through the programmatic advertising ecosystem (and then continuing to flow to third-party data brokers) is staggering.
there's a reason ads (and their related data) are bought and sold in aggregate—individual data points are neither very valuable nor very useful in all but the most extreme cases. the sheer quantity of data is enough to guarantee you relative anonymity in all but the most insane edge cases.
that said, our collective privacy matters. the risk to me as an individual may be negligible, but this data is still valuable (and potentially risky) at scale... hence why the third-party data market is so huge.
despite my knowledge of programmatic advertising in general, I'm not actually well-versed enough in the whole third-party brokers situation to really offer a specific takeaway. I do think there's a clear fucking lack of regulation, with all the requisite concerns that brings, especially since third-party data isn't a requirement for the programmatic ecosystem to function the way it's supposed to.
now that the IDFA is (somewhat) obsolete, this is no longer a reliable method of outing gay priests. if the gay priest in question had opted out of IDFA tracking, I wouldn't say it'd be impossible to pull this off, but it would certainly be easier and more cost effective to just like, plant a spycam in his little starched collar.
here's a guide on how to disable IDFA on your android or iOS device. I should stress that the risks of not opting out are minimal, unless someone with a multimillion dollar budget and an intimate knowledge of your day-to-day location is hellbent on fucking you over specifically, but you know. doesn't hurt.
try to stay out of the crosshairs of american catholic nonprofits.
oh I also also went down a minor rabbit hole yesterday reading about this catholic nonprofit that essentially used advertising data tied to hookup apps to out several gay priests, which is super interesting to me both as an affronted homo and someone with one foot in the world of programmatic bullshit, so I'm tempted to share some links on here but I feel like I'd need to include a lot of disclaimers and explainers lest this get twisted into some kind of "advertisers know literally everything about you" hysteria because it's really not like that at all, believe it or not. the privacy implications are still significant (i.e., bad) but I think the crazier takeaway is how there's just so much data being fed through these systems (billions of ad impressions! every single day!) that trying to leverage any of it in a life-ruining way is only possible under an extremely specific and increasingly unlikely set of circumstances. my first thought was to compare it to finding a needle in a haystack but I think it's actually more like combing through a landfill to piece together a shredded credit card statement.

A camp teaches Ukrainian soldiers who were blinded in combat to navigate the world again

RIVNE: Along a bustling street in a western Ukrainian city, Denys Abdulin takes his first independent strides since he was severely wounded and blinded while fighting invading Russian troops more than a year ago. The 34-year-old former soldier, wearing black glasses and gripping a white mobility cane, steps onto a more crowded stretch of sidewalk. His movements become tentative and tense. He accidentally blocks the path of a woman approaching an ATM to withdraw cash.
Like many other pedestrians, she responds with a compassionate smile and gracefully moves aside. Gradually, Abdulin covers 600 meters (almost 3/10 of a mile), guided by a trainer walking ahead of him with a bracelet of small metal bells.
Five other Ukrainian military veterans conquered similar challenges while attending a rehabilitation camp for ex-soldiers who lost their vision in combat. Over several weeks, the men would learn to navigate the city of Rivne, prepare their own meals and use public transportation while travelling solo.
Daily tasks they previously performed without thinking now demand focus, strength and dedication. “Everyone pays their price for freedom in Ukraine,” Abdulin, who spent months confined to a hospital bed and rarely takes off his dark shades, said.
The war Russia launched in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, has killed tens of thousands of fighters on both sides. Countless others, both Ukrainian military personnel and civilians who took up arms to defend their country, have been maimed or suffered other injuries that irreversibly reshaped their lives.
No statistics currently exist for how many service members have lost their sight due to severe wounds sustained in the war, according to Olesia Perepechenko, executive director of Modern Sight, the non-governmental organization that puts on the camp. But demand for the program is growing as the war nears its year and a half point.
Over the course of several weeks, the veterans, accompanied by their families, reside at a rehabilitation centre outside of Rivne. Most receive their first canes here, take their first walks around urban and natural environments without assistance, and learn to operate sound-based programs using cell phones and computers.
“Our goal isn’t to retrain them, not to change them, but simply to give them a chance to become independent and self-reliant,” Perepechenko, who is herself blind, said.
Abdulin voluntarily joined the military when Russia invaded Ukraine nearly 18 months ago.
Completing the 600-meter walk marked a new phase in his recovery following the wounds he sustained when a mine detonated a few meters (yards) behind him in Sieverodontesk, a city in eastern Ukraine now occupied by Russians. “It seemed to me that a flame flew out of my eyes,” he said of that day in May 2022.
“I immediately realized that I had lost my eyes.”
“Of course, I expected everything, but becoming blind, I couldn’t even imagine,” Abdulin continued.
“I thought that I could lose an arm or a leg, and I didn’t want to die at all. I never even thought that I would become blind. Therefore, at first, it was very difficult.”
In 2014, when Russia unlawfully annexed Crimea and armed conflict erupted in Ukraine’s Donbas region, Perepechenko yearned to be on the front lines helping in some way. Her request to join the army was declined, so she decided to embrace a new mission: helping soldiers who lost their sight to reclaim a sense of autonomy.
Modern Sight held its first rehabilitation camp in 2019 and organized around 10 more since then. However, only two camps have taken place during the war. Although there is a waiting list of 30 people for the next session, the non-profit’s primary hurdle is funding: each camp costs about 15,000 euros ($16,400) to put on.
Abdulin spent almost a year receiving treatment for his injuries, which included a shattered jaw from the shrapnel that also stole his vision and left him with breathing and balance problems. His wife, Olesia Abdulina, returned with their two children from Lithuania, where the three of them sought refuge after Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“His eyes were still so swollen, with bandages over them, covered in cotton pads,” Abdulina said of seeing her husband at the hospital for the first time after their months of separation.
“The main thing is that you’re alive,” she said she responded when he told her he would never see her again. During the months after that, she fed him with a spoon and rarely left his side.
At the Modern Sight camp, the two of them were learning how to integrate his impairment into their family life. While Denys attended physiotherapy or cooking classes, Abdulina and other women with husbands or boyfriends in the program go through their own training exercises. One purpose of the camp is reminding the spouses they are not “nannies” but life partners to their men, Perepechenko said.
During one such session, Abdulina is blindfolded and given a long cane. She tentatively probes the floor while another participant holds her hand. The purpose of the exercise is to help the women better understand what their partners experience and need.
“We remain the same people. We have the same capabilities,” Ivan Soroka, 27, who joined the Ukrainian army on the day Russia invaded and was attending the camp for a second time. “We need to stand up, take control and work on improving ourselves.”
A projectile wounded Soroka near Bakhmut in August 2022, when the longest battle of the war so far was just beginning. Russian forces ended up taking the city in eastern Ukraine in May after more than eight months of intense combat.
“I lost my sight immediately, thrown by the blast wave. I felt that I was dying,” Soroka said. “I lay there for about two minutes. Then I realized that no, someone isn’t letting me go there.” As he recalls those moments, he implies it was his fiancee, Vlada, now sitting beside him, who kept him alive.
The couple met when Soroka was participating in the defence of the Kyiv region in the spring of last year. Their love blossomed swiftly against the backdrop of war. Prior to Soroka’s summer deployment to the Donetsk region, he proposed to Vlada. She agreed to marry him.
But soon after, the two were spending days and nights in a hospital instead of preparing for a wedding. The happy occasion that was postponed because of Soroka’s injury is now planned for early September; after months of rehabilitation, he feels both physically and psychologically strong.
“I’ve realized that unless I rise on my own and start doing something, nothing will change,” he said.
The men and their partners spend camp breaks and evenings in a gazebo on the rehabilitation centre’s grounds. An atmosphere of tranquillity prevails, occasionally interrupted by hearty laughter and jokes from their time as soldiers.
By the time they leave the centre, the men will know they have the tools to get around a city and gain something equally vital — a sense of community forged through shared experiences and common trauma.
One evening, when the day’s activities were completed, the camp participants gathered in a courtyard to celebrate Oleksandr Zhylchenko’s birthday. He lost his sight late last year, though did not share details about the circumstances.
“I’m drawing you into a circle, into your family’s circle. There are about 50 of us here,” Perepechenko said, handing Zhylchenko a heart-shaped balloon in the yellow and blue of Ukraine’s national flag. “This is our collective heart.”
The trainers and trainees stood in a circle and, one by one, shared their birthday wishes for the man of the moment. Careless days. A bright future. Patience, confidence, faithfulness. A peaceful sky. The final wish was for “victory for all of us and for Ukraine.”
Moved, Zhylchenko held the balloon a moment longer, silently conjuring his own wish. Then, he released it, without seeing it swiftly ascend into the sky.
