Leland Townsend is a fantastic villain played with diabolical glee by Michael Emerson, but I confess that I begin to tire of the trope of "nerdy, quirky, awkward kid who is abused in his youth turns into a serial killer supervillain."

Give me nerdy, quirky, awkward kids who are treated badly who turn out to be loving, compassionate adults. No glow-ups. They're still quirky. They're still complete nerds. They're still awkward. But they somehow manage to rise above the shit they went through to turn out as decent human beings who make a positive difference in the world.

Write me movies and TV series like that.

Evil (Paramount+) does horror better than anything I've seen on TV. It's truly scary in a way nothing else is. It's also hilarious and ridiculous. I'm halfway through, but I love it so much.

I think that the songs they show Leland Townsend listening to or singing or otherwise using in Evil are a really interesting window into Leland's character, so I compiled this playlist. I was going from memory, so if I missed any of the songs, please let me know so that I can add them. I also plan to rewatch the series, so I'll probably be filling in the cracks as I go.

The fact that Leland is a big Roger Miller fan is not what I would have expected from him, although that he knows and sings show tunes is on point. I do dig the Roger Miller angle, though, especially the use of "Dang Me."

And I included "Stars and Stripes Forever" because fuck you, Leland Townsend.
