Ganyu x Demon Reader - Give And Take

"I did a good job, right?"

Your boss wanted you to get off your ass and be evil. Unfortunately for them, you decided to smooch a cute goat girl instead. Now that you've formed a contract and moved in with her, it's time to... wait. What are you supposed to do, exactly?

♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

The fan spun in redundant circles repeatedly above you, too fast to follow yet too slow to give up on trying. Mechanical whooshes overlapped with the bored humming that made its way out your throat; it's a tune you must've heard somewhere before, surely, yet can't quite recall the details of.

A knock rattled the front door, drawing your attention. Finally, she must be home! You hurriedly launched yourself over to greet her, hypothetical tail wagging back and forth behind you in excitement. Ganyu arriving back home was the highlight of your day. Yes, because she's your favorite human and you've got a contract with her and yada yada... but also because, if you got lucky, she might bring a special something back home with her.

As the door handle rustled and flicked open, saliva started to puddle inside of your mouth. Energy buzzed beneath your skin. And finally, she came into view.

"I'm home!" She looked at you with a bright, cheery grin. Which was adorable, but not what currently had your attention. Instead, your eyes were dead set on what she had in tow: a glorious, ginormous pile of every dessert you could possibly imagine. Overwhelmed with excitement, the only thing your poor sugar-addicted self could do was lunge forward, grab the closest delicacy, and take a huge, exhilarating bite. Damn was it good. Not just good, but the best-tasting food you've ever had. Yet, something was off. Glancing at your companion, you noticed that her lips had begun to move, but the sounds coming out of them were garbled and disjointed. Confused, you paused your gluttony and narrowed your eyes.

"Wake...up...please."

Your eyes flashed open. The first sensation you processed was the familiar warmth of Ganyu's body in contact with your own, seemingly even hotter than usual. The second was a light pressure on your mouth, which you now realized was wide open and chomping down on the nape of her neck. Oh. You sheepishly unlatched from her exposed skin and lifted your head up, coming face-to-face with her flushed self.

"Wh-When did you... You're not supposed to sleep in other people's beds without their permission." She pulled away from you, hurriedly sorting out her clothing and hair. "Especially when, ah... they're already sleeping in them." You felt your head sink to the side.

"But why's it bad? Don't you like sleeping together too?"

You know that it was your idea to have that contract and all, but damn was this whole "being good" business confusing. You thought you already understood the difference; good things make you feel good, and bad things make you feel bad. It really shouldn't be so much trouble, yet adding Ganyu into the equation threw the whole thing for a loop. Like now, for example.

"I-it's not that. Um, let me think of how to explain it..." She looked upwards into empty space, searching for a suitable answer. "Before you do something that involves someone else, you need to consider how they'll feel first. It really startled me when I woke up and, uh... you know." Her fingers landed on her neck area.

Suddenly, her eyes widened. A panicked squeak made its way through her throat before she rapidly stood upright, sprinting over to her bathroom. You turned towards the weird, ticking device that got her all riled up. Maybe the lines on it upset her? You crept over, ready to destroy it in an act of vengeance, when Ganyu reemerged.

"What are you doing?" Her eyes wandered over to your hand, which presently held the offending device.

"I'm gonna break it."

Moving faster than you'd ever seen before, she ripped it cleanly out of your hands. Her eyes got a surprisingly stern glare in them as she cradled it defensively in her arms.

"Don't do that!" At your still-lost expression, her tone and facial features softened slightly. "I know that you don't get how important this is, but please don't damage it. It's a clock, and this is something we need so that we can get to work on time and things like that."

After your short (and maybe deserved) reprimanding, she continued on with what you now understood was her getting ready for work. You yawned. Even just watching her running around was making you tired. It's a good thing you ditched your boss and all of those lame "responsibilities" they tried to push onto you when you got the chance. Still... your chest felt strange, like something was nagging at you that you didn't quite comprehend. Instinctually, you called out for her.

"Ganyu?"

"Hm?" Almost on her way out the door, she paused to look back at you.

"I don't get why you're choosing to work so hard. Wouldn't you be happier staying home all day? I know I would. And what about that mean person from yesterday?"

It took a few seconds for your questions to garner any response. Finally, she let out a soft sigh.

"It does sound nice to take a day off, admittedly, but you misunderstand. I enjoy my job. It's something I look forward to, and knowing that I'm doing my part for the wellbeing of Liyue gives my life joy and meaning." A serene expression blanketed her face, something you never would've expected from a person talking about their job of all things. "And besides, I wouldn't feel right sitting around doing nothing knowing how much Rex Lapis has done. My workload's tiny in comparison."

Her heartfelt speech made all the thoughts in your head come to a halt. You'd never even once heard one of your codemonworkers talk about work like that, or about anything, really.

"Oh, and about the woman you, uh, possessed last time. She ended up apologizing to me after I escorted her back home. I guess her relationship with her boyfriend's been a bit rocky and she's been on edge because of that? That's not an excuse, of course... but I don't think she'll treat me like that again, so don't worry." She walked over to you and gently patted your head, making you let out a purr-like sound, before finally heading off to work.

When the door clicked shut, you realized that you weren't quite sure what to do. Sure, she'd left you alone in this house for a few minutes before, but never a whole day.

Well... she did make a deal to let you have all the sugar you wanted. So it shouldn't be an issue if you raided the kitchen and ate everything sugary you could find, right? At least, that's what you told yourself.

And yet, as you lay on the floor, surrounded by a monstrously large pile of various wrappers and now-empty containers, something about this wasn't sitting quite right with you—and not the inevitable stomachache you could already feel coming on. After ruminating on it for some time, a simple answer suddenly became clear: you felt bad, even though you couldn't place why. Frustrated, you groaned. If only Ganyu were here, then maybe she could help.

Then again... would she be happy to see you? Or would she make yet another distraught face at the sight of whatever mistake you made while she was gone? You closed your eyes. You felt bad again.

As Ganyu's heels panged rhythmically across the Liyue Harbor walkways, so too did her heartbeat. A soft, yet shaky sigh left her mouth as she made her way over to her workplace. Even as she neared that familiar building she had grown so accustomed to, though, the only thing on her mind was you.

The topic of demons wasn't exactly new to her, per se. Given her relative closeness to Xiao, the tales of demonkind and their less-than-stellar reputation within Liyue weren't lost on her. And it's not as if having you around exactly proved that wrong, either. As much as you'd personally endeared yourself to her, that boss of yours was... a problem, to say the least. If left to their own devices, who knows what havoc they'd wreak within the finally peaceful Liyue? And if that happened, and Xiao began to hunt down any and all demons...

A shudder ran down her back. No, she couldn't let that happen. After all, hadn't she already made it her responsibility to look after you when she signed that contract? Of course, she originally justified that with the excuse that her actions were for noble reasons. That keeping you by her side was a safety precaution, a way to ensure you wouldn't go around hurting innocent civilians. That she needed you for intel purposes, to get more information about the demon uprising.

In all honestly, her motivation was simple. Embarrassingly simple, bringing a blush to her cheeks even when only muttered in the confines of her own head.

She had already fallen in love with you.

It's not as if you're the first person she'd ever met who spoke their mind unabashedly. Keqing and Beidou were obvious examples. Yet your presence shook her in a way no other had before. From your determination to protect her from harm, even over something as routine to her as extra paperwork, to the way that you earnestly expressed your affection in whatever way you pleased. To be frank, you're her polar opposite. And thanks to you, she finally understood the reason why people always say that opposites attract.

As the stiff indoor air hit her face, a wave of determination guided her heels over to Ningguang's office. To Ganyu's relief, the lady in question was actually in said space, rather than one of her countless meetings.

"Ningguang, my apologies for coming in so abruptly. I have an urgent matter to report. I do have one request, though, before I tell you." The others' lips pursed together.

"Oh? It's rare to hear you of all people make demands. Go on, then. What is it?"

Ganyu took a deep breath. It was hard to say if this was the right choice. For all she knew, it could easily backfire and only lead to more trouble—or even worse, bloodshed—down the line. But for your sake, she had to try.

"I would like this matter to be dealt with as peacefully as possible, with no harm to anyone other than the instigator."

Your head perked up at a familiar rhythmic sound heading towards your shared front door, followed by the jingling of keys. Could it finally be...

"Ganyu! Welcome home!" You barreled straight into the woman in question, barely remembering in time not to knock her down. You nuzzled into her. She smelled really, really good, somehow even sweeter than when she left. Wait. Hold on. Is it actually...?

"I brought you a little something, since I came back so late." After you backed up enough to see, she held out the gift in her outstretched palm. Inside of it was a dessert of some kind, a delightfully sweet aroma exuding from it and making you salivate hard. But you couldn't have it, not yet.

"Thank you, Ganyu! But first, I want to show you something. Follow me!" You grabbed her empty hand and held it in your own, dragging her off towards the kitchen you had resided in for so long earlier. A giddy feeling overcame you as you proudly pointed to the room ahead. Annoyingly though, Ganyu didn't seem nearly as excited. Looks like you needed to explain the source of your pride to her.

"I remembered that you don't like when wrappers and stuff are on the floor, so I made sure to get rid of them all! So..." You stared into her eyes timidly. "I did a good job, right?"

At first, she didn't react. All she did for those first few seconds was simply stare back at you, lost in her own thoughts. You began to shrink into yourself under her suddenly intimidating gaze, unsure of what kind of reaction she was about to give you. Maybe there'd been some sort of rule you missed and you actually screwed things up?

But to your surprise, a tender expression made its way across her face. She graced you with the warmest smile you'd ever seen from her—or from anyone, really, since genuine smiles were a rare sight for you in the first place. You know, demonhood and all. Your chest felt fuzzy, but in a good way.

"You did a great job. Thank you, I really appreciate it."

She lifted her hands up. Expectantly, you leaned your head closer for her to pet, only to feel something instead pressing onto your lips. Confused, you opened your eyes to find the aforementioned treat right in front of your face.

"I guess this counts as a reward, then?" She giggled sweetly.

In all honesty, her smile was a better reward than any dessert she could've given you. But you weren't about to complain about getting both.

Bonus:

A confused Ganyu stood over a trashcan. The container itself was perfectly fine, but... why was there nothing in it if you'd really cleaned up like you said? Apprehensively, she turned towards you.

"Um... sorry, but I'm just, uh, curious. Where exactly did you throw away your trash?" You crooked your head to the side.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, where did you put away those wrappers from before?" As a flash of recognition crossed your face, a foreboding knot formed in her stomach.

"Ohhh, that. I ate them."

"...What?"

i’ve had a vague thought for ages that rodney makes the perfect time loop victim bc he’s such an anxious person and also it would piss him off so much. i didn’t really have any specific idea of a fic to write around this for the longest time but i just had one and it’s evil

so it goes like this; rodney mistakenly activates some sort of ancient time loop device. he figures it all out basically right away (it wasn’t hard to link the weird repeated day to the weird device that just started glowing that morning) but there’s a problem. on the day of the loop, john dies. rodney could stop the loop with a thought at any time, but john would stay dead

instead of the ‘trying the figure out how to fix the loop’ plot, we get ‘trying to keep this asshole alive’ with bonus ‘keep the time loop device running at all costs’ and through this he just keeps watching the man he loves die over and over again

this gets Even More Evil but anything further would be spoilers so... i shan't say

George flopped back onto his hotel bed and let out yet another exasperated sigh, as if Dream would somehow be able to hear it from wherever he was.

They were supposed to be in sync, right? Soulmates or something like that?

Dream should definitely know how upset George was about not being able to meet fans with him. About being locked away in his room like some princess with freakishly long hair.

It was just so stupid.

George came to Vidcon to spend time with Dream. And yes, he wanted to spend time with his other friends too. Like Gia, Larray, and Puffy.

But to be discouraged – to be flat out banned – from greeting fans with Dream. It was nothing short of evil.

Homophobic even.

George rolled over in bed and reached for his phone, just as it dinged with another twitter notification. So what if he'd been following drupdates with his secret fan account? It wasn't like he was obsessed or anything. He just wanted to see what Dream was up to, that's all.

And yeah, maybe he'd watched that one clip of Dream giving a fan one of his signature smirks. On loop. For ten minutes.

George was just about to open twitter for the latest when the door to his room opened and Dream strolled inside, practically glowing from the praise that he'd been showered with for hours.

Truth be told, George was happy for his best friend. Dream deserved all of the love he was given and more.

And yeah, he wished he'd been able to share in that, but absorbing it from him this way was just as good, right?

Right.

“So,” George sat up in bed, then patted the mattress next to him. “How did it go?”

“It was amazing!” Dream plopped on the bed beside him. “There were a bunch of people I met yesterday that I got to talk to again, and some new people and oh–” Dream rolled into his side to face George, a casual smile on his lips as he looked George dead in the eye. “We got engaged, by the way.”

A blink.

Another blink.

“What?” George squeaked.

“You heard me,” Dream poked George's chest lightly, his grin growing wider with each second.

“But I didn't even… how could I…”

“Wait, you're not taking it back, are you?” Dream stuck out his lower lip. “The speech, the grand gesture? I thought you loved me, George. I thought you wanted to spend the rest of your life with me.”

“But I –” George blinked again, harder this time. Maybe he was dreaming. Yeah, that's it. He fell asleep and this was all just a projection of his subconscious.

George pinched himself.

Nope. Very much awake.

Dream turned away, wiping at his eyes as his shoulders trembled. “It was a joke, wasn't it? And in the middle of June? I was so excited to plan our wedding.”

“Dream,” George touched his shoulder, guilt clawing at his gut. He was still so confused, but he couldn't bear to see Dream like this, especially if he was somehow the cause. “I'm sorry, Dream. I just… I don't remember proposing. Are you sure it was me?”

Dream took a deep breath, then rolled back towards him, face surprisingly dry. “Of course it was you, idiot. Who else would wear a cape and a mushroom hat?”

“Dream!” George gave him a shove that sent him erupting into giggles. “You little… you got proposed to by a fucking cosplayer?”

“Yeah,” Dream laughed some more. “So, are you jealous?”

“Jealous? Me?” George huffed as he rolled his eyes. “Never. In fact, I knew you were joking the whole time. I was just… just playing along.”

“Oh really?” Dream propped himself up onto his elbows, raising one brow and giving him that little smirk he knew George couldn't resist. “You don't fool me, George. Just admit it, I got you. I got you good.”

“Never,” George crossed his arms, turning away from Dream as all of his frustrations rolled to a boil under his skin. “It's bad enough that I couldn't be there with you, and now you rub it in my face?”

“George,” Dream reached out to touch his arm. “It was a joke. I didn't mean anything by it.”

With another huff of air out his nose, George shrugged Dream's hand off his shoulder. “Yeah. Whatever.”

“George,” Dream's voice softened as he scooted closer to George, bumping their shoulders together. “I'm sorry. Really I am. I didn't realize how upset you were about the meet and greet.”

George took a deep breath and exhaled, trying and failing to keep the rush of warmth from rising into his cheeks.

“What can I do to make it up to you?” Dream whispered in his ear. “We could go get sushi together. At that fancy place you like.”

“Don't wanna get dressed up,” George shrugged.

“Then how about going shopping? Pick anything you want and I'll buy it for you,” Dream suggested.

George rolled his eyes. “So you're trying to buy my forgiveness? Wow, wait til the fans hear about this. You'll get cancelled. Again.”

“George,” Dream's voice was lower now, more serious. “What do you want? Just tell me. Or show me.”

“Show you?” George turned to face Dream, gaze falling to perfect pink lips lined in stubble that would feel amazing against his skin.

“Yeah,” Dream leaned in until their lips were a breath apart. “Show me.”

So George did.

And as their lips devoured each other hungrily while limbs tangled in cotton sheets, George thought to himself that maybe it didn't matter if he wasn't with Dream before at Vidcon.

After all, he had Dream now, and no one - not even a cosplayer, would ever get Dream this way.

And that's how it was meant to be.

Joe day! This one is a bit long, and a bit nasty... It's also the only one so far I've prewritten anything for, even if the prewriting was done like... yesterday. So still within the month. Sorry Joe, I've known I wanted to do this to you since I realised I gave you time magic. It could have been anyone. But you use magic timeskips with a call in your videos, so its you.

This fic runs into the middle of Cleo's fic, but from Joe's PoV

TW: time loops, major character death (reversed), betrayal, guilt, referenced offscreen suicide (reversed), open ending

By my standards it isn't graphic, but I am not a good judge. I advise caution and if things like text injuries upset you, skip this one.

It could have had more scenes, or more long scenes. I got decided enough was enough at a point.

"Joe! Do something!"

Cleo's voice is desperate as she holds False's mangled corpse in her hands. Joe can do nothing but stare at it, even as the battle rages on. Danger is all around, but he knows his mortality was lost somewhere, and Cleo... Cleo Joe can always stitch back together again.

False, though...

"Joe!"

"I don't know," he whispers.

"Can't you go back?" they beg. "Or resurrect her or change history or-"

Cleo is crying.

She knows as well as Joe does that, when he time travels to places where he already exists, he remembers it. His memories do not lack meeting himself, nor do they change after doing so; he doesn't remember meeting himself here, he doesn't-

Joe has met thousands of people in the centuries he has been alive. And most of them have died. Cleo has, too, but this-

Neither of them ever stuck around to love them before; it was nothing like this.

He hears Scar's scream as someone kills Cub.

"I wasn't there," Joe tells her, in horror himself. "I wasn't- Didn't see myself."

The earth shakes as someone kills That-Which-Should-Not-Die.

"/Joe/, please!"

He hears Scar's scream silence as someone kills him.

There is a spell, he knows. One he has not tried. One he should never try, for it can splinter and fragment and destroy realities. Back when he worked in timeline stabalisation it caused all sorts of problems - he learnt it from one of the guys they stopped, after all. It's not just a travel but a do over, scratching out a history and replacing it with another - or possibly splitting the universe in twain, nobody has ever quite agreed on which.

It's not forbidden, exactly, just...

It's then that Rendog finds them, slipping in the bloody mud as he tries to stop running.

"False?" he whispers.

Overhead, lightning strikes.

Enough.

Enough is enough.

He'll do it, then, he'll do it-

"False! Cleo, why isn't False-?"

"Joe will fix it," Cleo sobs. "Joe always fixes it, he's like that, Joe, please-"

And he will, he will, if Cleo asks it of him, then god strike him down he /will/.

"Rewind."

"- I think we're hoping for rather more than a might."

Joe's fingers spasm into soft fabric as his eyes looks wildly around. Cleo, in their nightdress, sits beside the fire in the arcane common room. The clock keeps on ticking, and the cuckoo ducks out signalling a bit too late to still be awake. There's not a drop of blood on them - nor is there on him. No scrapes on his hands, no blood between his teeth, no-

"Joe?" She asks, voice suddenly anxious. "Joe, are you listening to me?"

"Cleo?" he whispers.

"Well, yeah? Who else was I gonna be?"

He throws his arms around their neck, clinging tight.

"We need to stop it!" he tells her. "Come on, come on, before it all goes wrong!"

He bounces back off the seat, pulling them to their feet as he stumbles to his own. No time for questions he pulls her towards Xisuma's office; they need to talk, and they need to talk now.

He told them. He told everyone. They made their plans and they tried their best, and yet-

And yet it wasn't that simple, was it?

This time it's Ren dead in False's lap, Xisuma dead by Evil Xisuma's gun, Evil Xisuma dead by Wels' blade. Others, too, Joe are sure there are others from the screams he has heard, but he doesn't know-

A spear goes through Hypno's throat, wrists, ankles, stomach, wings-

Pinned again.

Like- Like... Like Joe isn't sure how many times before, but he cannot let it happen in his final ending.

Everyone is dead. Not just them, not just the students - every one of their allies and enemies too.

Not even the Turtle survived.

"Where to now?" Cleo asks Joe, clearly trying to be strong.

They could leave.

They have left before.

Just a little hop across realities, Joe can just take them to another timeline - another world.

Joe takes her hand, and holds it tight.

He cannot do this.

Not even if it means leaving them behind.

"Rewind."

"You weren't supposed to die first," Scar sobs. "Please, please- Cub- This isn't funny! This isn't a good prank, you can stop now! Please, Cub, you were never supposed to die first…"

"Rewind" is Joe's reply.

Jevin crushed and baked and ground to fine dust.

Rewind.

Welsknight's helmet caved in, just like his skull.

Rewind.

Pearl eaten by her own dogs.

Rewind.

Mumbo vomiting blood onto the floor-

One time, Joe grabs Cleo's hands, and drags them through a wormhole. He tells them nothing of what is happening as they play volleyball on the beach. Cleo laughs and Joe smiles, and the sun shines down on a beautiful day.

"What brought this on?" Cleo asks, lent over the sink as they wash salt from their hair. "Just a vacation? How very un-Joe hills of you."

"I take vacations!" he replies, and ignores the swirling pit of guilt in his stomach - the guilt that knows that as they laugh and play, their friends are dying on another continent. "There doesn't need to be another reason."

"If you say so," her eyes are bright as they pick him apart, squeezing out the last of the water. "Now, dinner. You can't bring me here and /not/ buy me dinner."

And so he takes them to dinner.

Later that night, once Cleo is asleep, snoring gently on her bed, Joe will get up. He will put things away then sit on the bed.

Take a deep breath.

Refuse to say goodbye.

"Rewind."

And get back to it.

Joe Hills screams.

At some point, he thinks he begins to hate Xisuma.

It's not a fair hatred, not really; Joe will feel guilty about it for the rest of his immortal life. But it is a true hatred.

He's worked out the root cause of all the death, the reason Joe can never save everyone - Xisuma could win the fight before anyone is hurt, but to do so he would have to be willing to kill his twin.

It's a useless argument, a pointless one. Xisuma understands but does not accept fate, and so everyone dies again and again and again. It's so much harder to survive, when you're trying to avoid injuring somebody, and they are there purely for the kill.

But Xisuma does not have the heart for it.

And so Joe has to save everyone the hard way.

Rewind.

Hypno pinned to the wall like a butterfly to a collection.

Rewind.

Keralis mad with grief and calling down the stars to kill the earth-

"Who was it you were looking for?" Joe asks the archangel before him.

A glare turns to Joe, eyes haughty and strict. Still he maintains his posture.

"I may look like a fool, but maybe I can help!" He offers. "Or at least be an appropriate distraction!"

He is not answered with words, but with pictures of two familiar folk.

He knows them he knows them he knows them he-

"This is your price?" He asks.

"If you want our help," the archangel tells him. "You will give us them first."

It isn't worth it.

Joe refuses to sell his own people out just for a change to change things.

He'll do it himself, lesson by bloody lesson.

Etho hung from a castle spire.

Rewind.

Bdubs crushed into the mud.

Rewind.

Gem's head tossed at Grian's feet.

Rewind.

Beef captured, tortured, posted back hacked into pieces, a jigsaw puzzle in a box.

The field is a barren mess. Those who could walk have left, and those who could not have died, except for two who remain. Well, no, Joe left. Joe left and stood in the hospital and listened to the dying screams of some friends, and the desperate screams of others as they tried to save one another's lives.

He doesn't remember who is dead.

At this point, perhaps he should.

Still, he approaches the other figure, kenlt with wings stretched out in a strangely dry patch of battlefield.

The-Thing-That-Grian-Has-Become's back is to Joe.

A thousand eyes still watch his steps.

In the depths of his gut, Joe knows that Grian himself is very, very dead, even if his body breathes.

"You should have saved them," it accuses, the stolen voice echoing with the weight of ten thousand suns.

"I'm trying," he replies. And then, as he no longer knows fear, he asks, "what did you do to Grian?"

The two had existed in parallax for cycles upon cycles; it seems strange that the being has finally consumed Grian now.

Joe isn't really sure what it /is/, exactly, only that it has been there a long time, and is strange, and every time it takes control Grian grows a few more teeth.

"He offered me his flesh to keep," the being sniffs. "I won't stay in it much longer, but he didn't want to stay, not without his friends. And I've been peckish of late."

"So you ate him."

"So I ate him."

That-Which-Wears-Grian's-Skin does not know guilt or remorse, guilt or failure. It is not human, and - as far as Joe knows - and unlike Keralis it has never tried to be.

"Do you care, traveler?" it asks. "Is that why you fight?"

Joe does not reply.

"You can try again, you know? Not everyone gets that choice."

--- Tiiiiime Skip! ---

Joe sells out his own people just for a chance to change things.

They can rescue them later, right? Once the Lord of Evil is defeated and their alliance no longer useful, they can turn on the angels and rescue their friends. Joe can throw himself to the past or the future for his betrayal, but rescue was always in the plan.

Tango won't have it. Zedaph won't have it.

The first throws himself at Joe the moment he finds out, loosing his grip on the finer points of human form in his rage. Fingers of lava tear into his flesh, burning him, pulling him apart as Tango screams in rage and grief and pain.

Joe takes it - he knows what he did, but it was to save them. It was to save them. He's doing his best, he just wants to save them.

Zedaph is quieter. He leaves, coming back only once Tango has burnt himself out.

He brings a bottle of acid and pours it on Joe's eyes, the only softness left him him is for how he scoops Tango up, and drags him back out.

Those two leave soon after, and nobody can stop them quitting. With them - with Impulse really - they take the alliance with the Dwarves.

Joe spends the loop in the infirmary, hoping it will work. And it does, after a fashion - the angels come, they fight, the casualty rare is much lower - Xisuma and Mumbo and Jevin and Scar - and Joe can work from that, its a better starting point, he might be able to do something with that-

His eyes heal just in time to see the corpses bought back from heaven.

Skizz alone remains, every part of him screaming as he cradles the charred remains of Impulse, Zedaph and Tango lying dead at his sides.

And Grian. And Gem. And False and Cub and even though alive xB will no longer even look at Joe and-

Joe doesn't try that again.

What he tries almost works - it almost, almost /almost/ works-

But then he finds Skizz cradelling Impulse's corpse, Tango and Zedaph already rushed to the infirmay and-

And maybe in an earlier timestream Joe could have lived with that.

But this isn't earlier, and Joe cannot, and he hears the broken, confused "Joe?" between Skizz's lips - one begging him for help, exactly the same as he did as when Joe betrayed him-

"I'll fix this," Joe promises. "This was just a trial run, I'll fix it."

Assassins in the night, half the staff dead before the fight even happens.

Rewind.

xB and Keralis, hand in hand this time, cut open and bleeding into the sea.

Rewind.

Joel's shield shattered, arrows tearing open his armour and his flesh.

Rewind.

Three cats on Scar's lap, meowing for him to wake.

Rewind.

Joe gathers the pieces of Cleo into his lap. There's not enough left to put her back together. If she's even still conscious, there's no splinter of flesh capable of speech. Their tongue alone is in seventeen pieces and Joe shatters, and he rewinds.

Blood bubbles up between Joe's teeth as he laughs, the scene before him overlaid a thousand times. Blood, blood, blood... everywhere is death and blood. He doesn't look at the bodies - not xB run through with his own trident; not False's dead eyes as a vulture plucks them from her head; not the-thing-that-is-Grian, as it shrieks bound to the floor and feral, forced to watch the dissection of Mumbo's corpse; not Skizz begging for Impulse to live; not Zedaph lying butchered on an altar; not Xisuma-

Not any of them.

Both Xisuma's lie dead, but the fighting continues. Etho shows no concern for friend or foe as he summons corpses to fight, and Cub shows even less as he shrieks with unfiltered rage. All around skeletons fight zombies.

All around, the mortal soldiers lie dead.

Student upon student, peer upon peer, friend upon friend...

Joe's body is shattered in the mud, but he cannot die. He begs for your release, reader, but he cannot die. Shattered in the mud, bones broken, unable to move. There is pain in every part of him, and yet he no longer feels pain at all.

Cleo stands over him, protecting his broken body as though that even matters. He's like mycelium, you see - you cannot kill him in any way that matter, in any way that will stick. She knows this, and yet...

"Get up," Cleo's hisses break into a yell. "Joe, I swear to god, if you don't get up right now-!"

A tear chokes her throat.

She cleaves the skull of the approaching skeleton in two.

Joe doesn't have a jaw right now.

It would be a little tricky even if he tried.

Which he won't. 

Technically, they have won. Here stands all the Forces of Evil, their leader dead and their mine stop broken. He could take it, the idea of everyone dying, if not for the fact that they die.

Die, and might blame him, might-

"Joe! Joe, please!" Cleo's voice is broken as she begs it of him. "Joe, keep fighting! Just a little longer!"

How many times has he been told that.

How many times will he be told it again.

"/JOE/!"

He cannot stand, cannot do anything she asks, need a good few days for his shattered body back together.

He cannot.

He knows how to keep fight, he knows it, its just...

He's so, so, so tired.

But he cannot leave the end like this.

"Joe!" Cleo yells at him. "Get up!"

He knows that, at best, he is rewriting the timeline.

That at worst, he is leaving a corpse every time.

That he-

"Joe," Cleo must have seen his expression, for her voice drops, they reach for him, they- "No, no, Joe, don't leave me here, Joe-!"

Minor rant, but I recently found your blog and think you may find this amusing (of course ignore as well if i misjudged! 💕)

I got into a baffling conversation with someone I share a server with, and it reminded me again that “antis” just… don’t think. Ever. And I knew that, but getting hit in the head with the reality always throws me for a loop no matter how many times it happens.

In my current fandom, I tend to only write character studies, longer plotty fics, slice of life, and that type of thing. It’s simply what currently has my attention. I do have content on my AO3 antis would drop dead at, but for a different fandom than is for the above server, so I don’t think this person (or others) realise that. Shows that they do know how AO3 filters work, as they’ve said they filter for this ship/fandom on my page, but that’s a different issue all together

Anyway, this person was *stunned* when I said I ship and let ship, and am 100% proship, full stop, no matter what. She seemed convinced that all proshippers write and like “evil (her words) content”. I of course mentioned that I’ve written all of AO3’s content warning, read it in fic, published books, and said content is 100% in the book I’ve been slowly writing, and that i support it. But I digress.

Where the conversation truly lost the plot was when she brought up that I don’t like certain themes, and am admittedly picky af with what I read??? And yes, I am. As are a lot of people. She could not comprehend this. She (and a few others who jumped in) seemed to think that, aside from proship meaning problematic ship, it also means someone who is proship has nothing they don’t like. I just. Okay. Maybe I’ve curated my fandom and online presence too well, but I’ve thankfully avoided this line of thinking before. I’d say I hope it’s not common, but I feel like it probably is 🙃

I have so many boundaries and things i hate. I am, at my core, a hater. My dms with small friend groups are full of me hating on tropes, ships, etc, I hate. But I could not give a flying fuck if others like them, and wow she could NOT get this. I have writers on AO3 I’ve blocked because I don’t like how they write certain things, or just don’t like how often they appear in the tag. I have no issue with them as people, I just know how to curate my fandom experience.

One of the people who was contributing to the conversation reached out afterwards in DMs and seems to (hopefully) be rethinking things, and realising that they’re very much proship. Picky with what they like, but proship. Small and unexpected victories!

Every day I grow more concerned for society as a whole.

The 'proship means problematic thinking' thing I can vaguely understand because its been an anti-propaganda tagline for so long, and they're very effective at being loud enough to be convincing.

But the rest?

He tries not to hurt Loki the first few loops but keeps getting killed and starts taking it personally so he steps up his game to actually try to win/kill Loki back but he still keeps losing.

gudao/angra mainyu posting again because i am once again sick in the head about them. this time im just going to drop some random headcanons i have about them. slight nsft warning as well. oh and ordeal call 2 spoilers.

- it starts off with gudao crushing more on angra mainyu. angra isn’t not receptive to it, he just doesn’t take it too seriously, doesn’t really believe it.

- angra definitely teases gudao nonstop about it too. once it’s reversed on him though, he loses some of his composure though…he’s not used to this overwhelming kindness, attention, and affection. it feeds this unknowable hunger for more inside of him.

-meanwhile, gudao is just throwing himself at angra in the most blatant displays he can manage. grailing him, snagging sweets for him from the cafeteria, gifting him weird items he’d think would give him a laugh: just small tokens of his affection.

- i think gudao would wear the red bandana angra mainyu gives you for Valentine’s Day somewhere in his person, like around his upper arm. it breaks angra’s brain and he can’t think straight when he sees gudao wear what was supposed to be the lamest valentines ever like a badge of honor.

- i heard a head canon/idea lately that all of the avengers care deeply for ritsuka in their own way, hence their fierce loyalty, almost to the point of yandere behaviors :>. i think angra would hide it in his own way since he is all the world’s evils, and if he were to truly have gudao all to himself, well…that wouldn’t be too good for humanity. can’t kill humans without any humans around :p

- they are definitely freak4freak. I don’t think it’d be toxic yaoi (ok maybe a little if you wanna get weirder with it).

- I know that angra mainyu technically doesn’t leave chaldea at the end of OC2 since he’s just always been there, but thru the fgo story. but like…what if gudao wanted to make him stay, since he’s starting to disappear slowly?

- he asks angra to make a time loop so he can figure out how to keep him around. and angra mainyu just…lets him try, for a while. because of course he wants to stay, but he knows that the dead must always go back and leave those in the living world to live. if Gudao can carry on, then…

- of course gudao won’t let angra mainyu leave. he knows that this has happened to him before: saying goodbye to his one chance at happiness, to see off his loved ones live again…second chances don’t come often. Gudao wants angra mainyu, the one he loves, to be happy.

- which is why gudao says: “possess my body, and live in my skin until we solve the bleached earth phenomenon”.

- he says no, outright. Gudao says they’ve done this before, he can handle his curses, the corruption. (based on a diff fic I wrote dw bout it) it’s rotten work. not if it’s you.

- plus, absorbing all 6 billion of those curses…angra worries it would kill gudao. he left that out of the equation last time. Gudao doesn’t care, can’t imagine a life without him in it. he’s already seen hell seven times over, survived the garden of lost will by the skin of his teeth. what’s another gauntlet of horrors for him?

- angra keeps denying him, as tantalizing as the idea is…because of course, it would be a dream come true. possessing gudao, living in his skin, seeping into the marrow of his bones…owning him, and being owned by him in mind, body and soul…nothing would be closer to heaven for him.

- so he agrees, and falls into a short coma once angra releases the deluge of curses. he wakes up a week later with some…changes.

- angra is gone, but present in his thoughts, his feelings, his physical ticks. he can feel him looking behind is eyes, feel his thoughts brushing against his own. it’s strange and enrapturing. they can still have “fun” together in their dreams.

- I think gudao’s skin would turn chalky pale, and have some remnants of angra’s tattoos marked on him. angra’s eye colors would also surface occasionally. Gudao opts to hide these changes most of the time, but he can’t hide all of the tattoos (not that he’d want to).

- angra can also take control of his body when gudao is willing, which can lead to some fun activities :3

ladybug transforms back in front of chat but then she gaslights him into thinking “no sorry i just ran in here! dunno where ladybug went..”

chat gets to reveal his identity to someone! but he has no idea who. he ends up blurting it out at ivan or max and they just. run away

ladybug gives her number to chat noir for emergencies, and the same day alya makes a group chat with alya, nino, adrien, and marinette. adrien is just confused as to why ladybug is in their friends group chat.

mari makes a replica of her suit to wear under her super suit in case of emergencies! an akuma takes her earrings and she has to fight with no powers and only a flimsy mask hiding her identity.

chat noir gets turned into an actual cat and marinette accidentally brings him home with her.

they’re stuck in a time loop but only them are aware that it’s a loop. they go through the same day over and over until one of them publicly reveals their identity just to see what would happen and they figure out that they both remember.

everything is the same but the kwamis can’t say the names of the other holder at all. tikki can’t even say adrien’s name when talking to mari about her crush. plagg can’t call mari pigtails. this is how they figure the other out.

First of all...I'm sorry for this (not really but yes a lot at the same time, but I did this to myself too). An evil snail shared with me this AMAZING AND BRUTAL essay on Sanzu & katana-chan and reading the last pages about Mucho, this fic happened. So first of all...

Warnings: Manga Spoilers. Major Character Death (chapter 206, duh). Hurt/No Comfort. Like for real, comfort has been slashed with a katana and is sinking in the bottom of the ocean.

The title is from "Love you better" because I listened in a loop for two days while reading the essay and writing this.

Oh, I played with Sanzu name (again, yes) but this time doing a full Jinx, ooopsie!

It’s been six months since the Kanto Incident. Six months of planning for this day, of imagining how he’s going to punish that damn traitor. Of pretending his whole body doesn’t ache at the idea of killing the only person that made him feel like he mattered.

Haruchiyo is good at that, at hiding his true feelings from the world, lying to himself as much as he needs as a way of achieving it. He’s good at rationalize the overwhelming whirlwind of emotions that threaten to flood his mind all the time. He’s used to repress the pain, keep his anxiety at bay, bury all of it next to the memories he can’t face without having the need to scream and break everything at his reach (including himself).

Six months that seem to crumble the second his captain’s eyes light up when he spots him outside the detention center.

The ride is dominated by silence, that only breaks with Muto’s simple questions about how he’s been doing during this time. Genuine concern plastered on the face he’s supposed to hate. Haruchiyo wants to laugh hysterically at this, the irony that even now the older boy is only worried about him. Instead, he just gives short answers, knowing the other won’t push his boundaries.

They are finally at the wharf and his resolve flatters for a moment, overwhelmed by a kindness that he forgot how warm it feels.

“I’ve been waiting for this day...”

Haruchiyo trails off, talking mostly to himself. His hands grip the hilt of the katana, steading his inner turmoil with the reminder of why he’s doing this. The tangible proof of his vow, of the promise that gives him purpose. Wielding it with years of practice, preparing himself to strike a fatal blow.

‘Is that it? Is that the only reason I’m doing this?’

He hesitates, consciously loosening his grip on one hand and landing a sloppy cut that buys him some precious seconds.

“You damned betrayer!”

‘Liar, you made me think I could trust you, made me feel safe, seen. How can you say you love me when you couldn’t tell your treason would rot everything we shared?’

“Sanzu...?”

Muto looks at him in shock, trying to stop the bleeding with his hand and falling on his knees. He’s the perfect image of bewilderment, like he can’t comprehend what is happening, why is happening.

“I’ve been fooling you all along.”

‘I’ve been fooling myself, pretending this never meant anything to me. Pretending you never meant anything to me.’

Haruchiyo keeps talking, winning some time in order to collect his thoughts, to understand his own feelings in order to let them go and fully put his heart on the second hit.

“Remember our conversation that day when we were playing shogi? I said it, right?”

‘Do you remember how you told me I also mattered? You made me yearn for more, you were the first person that taught me to be selfish, to listen to my own needs.’

It’s almost ironic, realizing killing Muto is a sick way of putting himself first. Realizing this is personal.

“Protecting the king is the priority. You betrayed Mikey, didn’t you?”

‘You betrayed me, didn’t you?’

He takes off his mask, the scars reminding him of his place, letting go the faint illusion it could ever be somewhere else. That it could be next to his captain. He can’t forget it again, can’t keep hiding his devotion behind his craving for affection.

A sadistic grin on his face. That’s the new mask he’s going to show to a world that will never be the same for him.

“Now it’s checkmate.”

This time the cut is fatal, slashing a lot more than flesh and bones and severing the ties between them.

‘We are both dying here today, captain.’

Somehow, Muto hears the words he never says. But his will be the only tears shed, no one else will mourn the Haruchiyo that knew genuine love.

Sanzu can’t allow himself to grieve. He can’t be weak again, these seconds that felt like ages will be the last entertaining the idea he could be more than a loyal knight to his beloved king.

He made a promise and Sanzu is willing to do anything in order to fulfill it. Even killing a part of himself forever. His weakness, the love that tempted him to break free of his sacred vow. In a twisted way, he can’t avoid thinking how fitting it feels burying it with his captain.

Haruchiyo is dead.

Only Sanzu prevails.
