Xue-gongzi: Don’t cry anymore. Remember to lay me to rest someplace closer to you, and don’t erect a headstone either; it will look a bit too desolate and lonely. Plant a cedar tree instead, alright? It can stay green for all four seasons, yet will appear a head of white hair when covered with snow. The snow of the back hills will never melt. Bury me beneath the tree. In this way, I will always be able to accompany and brew tea with you in the snow. Xue-tongzi: There won’t be a next year. Have you forgotten? The Burial Snow Heart Sutra that I cultivate with, it will reverse my aging and restore my youthful vigor once every four years. The spring of next year will be the time that I break through the last level. If I break through it, my body and memories will be restored anew. I will forget you; I will forget you entirely. Xue-gongzi: If you forget me, that’s good too. I can’t bear for you to always hold a grudge against me. Xue-tongzi: How could I hold a grudge against you? Xue-gongzi: You will. You will resent me for abandoning you, and for making you live all by yourself in loneliness. Xue-tongzi: You bastard good-for-nothing! Then you can’t die! Xue-gongzi: Didn't we always say that the weather outside is sunny and cloudless for ten thousand li on end?
Xue-gongzi: Is the outside really as good as he claimed? If there is a chance, I would really like to go out to take a look. Xue-tongzi (Adult): Is it that you feel this place is no longer fun, so you wish to leave? Xue-gongzi: This place really is boring, indeed. It’s a world of ice and snow, every day of the year exactly the same. But rest assured. As long as you don’t leave, I won’t leave either. I will always accompany you, so we can be bored together. Xue-tongzi (Adult): That’s more like it.
Xue-gongzi: Such a vast and dazzling place, I seem to see it now. It really is as I dreamed. I’m going to go first and take a look for you.
Xue-tongzi (Adult): Long time no see. Are you well?

9 people you want to know better!
Thanks for the tag @lonelylonelyghost 😚
Three ships: oh god anyone who knows me already know this but: zhoudu (mo du/justice in the dark), chengyi (under the skin) and pingxie (dmbj), i feel so obvious and simplistic and tacky—
First ship: this will tell you how old i am, but batman/catwoman from the 1966 series; also robin hood/maid marian from the 1973 disney movie, which was the first movie i ever saw. later and for most of my life it was kirk and spock, even though i didn't know what that meant.
Last song: all weekend i was hung up on "emily i'm sorry" by boygenius but also i had a dive back into "suburban legends" (from 1989) and billie eilish: "the greatest," "skinny," and most of all: "chihiro" with which i'm obsessed, i want to make a hundred edits with it. (i want to make edits all the time but it's just so time consuming...)
Last movie: probably one i taught in the spring semester? we ended with everything everywhere all at once, which the students loved. i haven't really watched movies this summer. but my bff and i are going to see shichinen no samurai on a big screen at the art museum this weekend and I AM BESIDE MYSELF WITH EXCITEMENT.
Currently reading: ten danmei at once (case file compendium and little mushroom, also qjj and spl and erha as each book comes out) but then i got distracted by an accidental mo du reread, waylaid when i went into the pdf just to search for a quote and whoops now it's three days later and i'm nearly finished with book 4, and also wrote a ten-page meta last night that i don't know what to do with? how did this happen to me? why does this novel GET TO ME?
Currently watching: i stalled out like halfway through kinnporsche for no clear reason other than that they're happy and it's kind of a nice place to stop? because i'm pretty sure all holy hell is about to break loose and the thai mob is going to try to crush their young love. but look, here they are being happy boyfriends! a nice place to end it.
idk i keep bouncing off dramas but i really want to watch killer and healer, the chinese hikaru no go, and finish the spirealm. my MDL watchlist literally has 70 things on it, it's so tragic T_T
Currently eating: a square of dark chocolate with iced coffee, but i should go make lunch, i just don't want to cook anything, it's hot
Currently craving: another extra month before the fall semester starts in two weeks and i have to teach. can i just have july back pls

For the highly specific ship ranking: (full disclosure, I have no idea which you're been asked yet XD) so... Pingxie, Weilan, Enjolras/Feuilly
Pingxie
Squick / Just nope / A trainwreck you can’t look away from / Mehh but they are bloody everywhere / Not interested but no negative feelings / I need to see how I could make it work / BroTP / Cute / I love them / They rented a room in my mind and are here to stay
I'm almost as Normal about this pairing as the two are about each other.
Weilan
Squick / Just nope / A trainwreck you can’t look away from / Mehh but they are bloody everywhere / Not interested but no negative feelings / I need to see how I could make it work / BroTP / Cute / I love them / They rented a room in my mind and are here to stay
They are both completely unhinged and just the right type of extremely obsessed to be on the same wavelength. If one of them was just a little bit more normal it would be so damn toxic, but thankfully they are just right for each other. (Drama version is cute and sad, I like that one too.)
Enjolras/Feuilly
Squick / Just nope / A trainwreck you can’t look away from / Mehh but they are bloody everywhere / Not interested but no negative feelings / I need to see how I could make it work / BroTP / Cute / I love them / They rented a room in my mind and are here to stay
It's been a while since I last took them out to play, but I'm still really fond of both the individual characters and the pairing.

The posts I really want people to see.
Yucun Part 2 Translations
Got a couple of yucun posts that aren’t translations in there, idk man I’m not very good at this whole organisation thing
Join the DMBJ novels discussion server I made!
The best Pingxie fic I have ever read (rec for a fic I translated)
I’ve also written a few fics of my own: gingaittousei on AO3. Sorry I use different usernames everywhere; these accounts were all created at different times and I haven’t got to the point that I absolutely need to change them.
Zanghaihua 2 Prologue Translation (seminal work for Zhang Qiling lovers)
DMBJ Scene Comparison
This is book 6 when Xiaoge comes out of the meteorite, between the licensed TL and the original text
The Title of Yucun P1 c29 is not Three Thousand Worlds
And it matters because it affects the understanding of the text. I put in a decent enough amount of work trying to understand the concept and then explain it coherently to not highlight this.
Zanghaihua Manhua Chapter 10 Scanlation
Zanghaihua Manhua Chapter 11 Scanlation
I don’t know if I should say this because I’ve literally clowned myself every single time, but no promises if I’ll do more. I am very proud of what I have done though.

Somehow, amazing even himself, Liu Sang fell asleep. With his belly full and the thirst sated, with the soft car seat under him and the warm air from the car’s heater surrounding him, he fell asleep so deeply that he only woke up when the cold air washed out over him as Wu Xie opened his door and got out.
He jerked awake at the cold air coming in through the door, at the sound of a door opening, for a moment not sure where he was, and half expected one of the mercenaries to be in front of him, before he felt the comfortable car seat beneath him and remembered the absolute insanity of the day. He blinked, then yawned, peering out through the windscreen into what appeared to be an underground parking lot. It was asphalt everywhere, and concrete pillars at regular intervals, supporting the weight of the roof and probably the building above. Lights were set into the roof at different regular intervals, casting the whole place in a dim yellow light, glinting off of the windscreen and the three black cars parked nearby. On seeing them, Liu Sang tensed up, hands curling into fists as he looked at them warily. It was stupid, he knew it was stupid, lots of people drove black cars, but he couldn’t help but be reminded of the car he’d been dragged into five days ago, when he’d been grabbed off the street as he’d walked from his apartment block to his favourite food stall.
A slender hand landed on his shoulder from the back seat, and he jumped with a small gasp before he realised it was Xiage reaching out to touch him on the shoulder. Liu Sang swallowed, looking back at the black-clad man, dressed in what he knew were blood soaked clothing even if he couldn’t tell from looking in this light. Xiaoge just gave him a slow blink, tilting his head to one side in a silent question.
“I’m okay,” Liu Sang said quickly, his voice still slightly raspy from sleep. Xiaoge looked at him for a moment more, then nodded, releasing his shoulder and slipping out of the car with a silent grace that Liu Sang could only describe as predatory. Liu Sang watched him for a moment, then turned his attention to the three cars in front of them and the people he could hear inside, seeing and hearing doors open and men get out of the vehicles.
“Hello!” he heard Wu Xie call out cheerfully, giving the men a small wave.
One man stepped in front of the others with the kind of confidence that came from long familiarity.
“Kanjian,” Wu Xie called, and headed for the man.
“Laoban!” The cry sounded somewhat wet, as if the man was about to cry. “Are you okay?” The young man flung himself at Wu Xie and hugged forcefully, like a boa constrictor. He was wearing a denim jacket with its sleeves cut off, showing off the rather powerful musculature of his arms. He was also pressing his face to Wu Xie’s chest and… sobbing. “I was so worried!”
“I’m okay, I’m okay, Kanjian.” Wu Xie was patting the newcomer’s back awkwardly, clearly unable to break through the powerful grip the man had. “Xiaoge saved me. I just need to get home now.”
Kanjian sniffed and let go, nodding, and turned to where Xiaoge was already out of the car. For a wild moment Liu Sang thought that Kanjian might try to hug Xiaoge, but he stopped himself, probably realizing that it wasn’t the best idea ever.
Xiaoge moved to the front of the car, but no further, and it took Liu Sang a while to realize that Xiaoge was waiting for him. He looked from Wu Xie to Xiaoge, then to Kanjian and these other strangers, then back to Xiaoge again. Well… these were clearly people Wu Xie knew, which meant they must be the ones Wu Erbai had sent. If they were changing vehicles, then he couldn’t stay in this car, and would have to get out sooner rather than later. He unbuckled the seatbelt and opened his door, cautiously getting out of the vehicle.

Pingxie Week 2021 Day 7
Summary: Pangzi just thought it was a pretty decoration
Written for Day 7 of Pingxie Week – Prompt: Qilin (Warning, mentions of character death. The death isn’t described, but the character dying is mentioned a few times.)
He didn’t expect it to hatch, no one expected it to hatch. It was just supposed to be a nice gift to cheer Tianzhen up, even if only for a minute.
Wu Xie hadn’t been the same after Xiaoge took a shot meant for him and bled out in the tomb. When they got home, he spent the first three weeks in their bed, barely eating the food Pangzi cooked for him, staring at the pictures on the wall, crying silently.
After the three weeks, Xie Yuchen showed up and locked the bedroom door behind him. Pangzi still has no idea what was said, but after a few hours the friends left the bedroom, settling at the kitchen table to eat the food Pangzi and Heiye had cooked. It was a quite lunch and Wu Xie barely ate, but it was something. He was out of the bedroom. For now, Pangzi could be happy with that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He found it in Beijing at a friend’s shop. Wang Meng was keeping an eye on Wushanju and its owner. It had been four months since Xiaoge’s death and Wu Xie was slowly recovering. He ate more, spoke to his friends and family, even smiled every once in a while. But he certainly wasn’t the Wu Xie everyone knew and loved.
So, Pangzi decided to buy him something nice, something he could research or puzzle over, to distract him. Poring over everything in the shop, he eventually decided on what looked like an egg. It seemed to change colour from blue to green when it caught the light and had scale pattern spiralling from the top to the bottom. Large in size, Pangzi had to hold it in two hands, surprised at how light it was. Looking at it, Pangzi had a weird feeling that he’d regret it if he left the shop without this thing. Mind made up he haggled with his friend, coming out on top of course, and walked out of the shop one egg extra.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been two weeks since Pangzi had returned from Beijing and, as he expected, Wu Xie was obsessed with solving the mystery of the egg. How old was it, were the spirals a map or tribal marking, could it be opened? It was nice, seeing his Tianzhen back in research mode. They still missed Xiaoge, that would never go away. Even catching sight of his hoodie that they never removed from the coat stand was enough to bring Wu Xie to tears sometimes, never mind that sword that rested against the wall in their bedroom.
But over the past two weeks, Pangzi had noticed a change in Wu Xie. He was sleeping better, eating better. When Pangzi asked him, the younger man muttered something about the egg helping and encouraging him, which made no sense, but if it made his Tianzhen feel better, who was Pangzi to judge? Let Wu Xie do what he wanted to feel better.
4 am the next morning, Pangzi was rethinking the egg. Woken by Wu Xie screaming his name, Pangzi ran to his room, gun in hand, ready to take on whoever was making Wu Xie scream like that.
“What the hell!”
Wu Xie looked up, eyes wide, hands shaking.
“I don’t know! I woke up to a cracking sound and when I looked this was happening.”
This being the egg. It was rocking from side, cracks growing across the surface. It was also glowing, the light throwing odd shadows across the wall. Pangzi couldn’t make sense of them, why would a desk cast a shadow of a deer?
“Pangzi! Something’s coming out.”
Dropping his gun, Pangzi fell to the floor beside his friend, waiting to see what it was. He definitely hadn’t expected this when he bought the thing. Egg shell falling to the ground, the creature revealed himself. Pangzi knew he wasn’t breathing, but really didn’t care.
“Wu Xie.”
“Yeah. Holy God, it’s a qilin.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was tiny, able to curl up in the palm of Wu Xie’s hand. It had seemed to imprint on the young man, following him around the room, distressed mewling leaving its mouth when it lost sight of Wu Xie. It was kinda cute. Less cute was the fact that neither Pangzi nor Wu Xie knew how to look after it. And Zhang Rishan had been no help.
“I’ve never read anything about an actual qilin being cared for by the family. Best bet, find out what it likes to eat and keep it entertained. And by the sounds of it, keep it around Wu Xie.”
Useless. Through a lot of trial and error over the weeks they soon discovered that the creature’s favourite food was chicken, its favourite person was Wu Xie, closely followed by Pangzi and if left alone for too long, it was very capable of destroying their belongings. Pangzi would miss that leather jacket. Naming it was a responsibility left to Wu Xie, who was struggling. None of the names seemed right, so for now, it was the qilin. It came running when called either man called out for it, stopping at their feet, ready to do anything.
“We basically have a mythical dog.”
“A fast growing one. Pangzi, does he look bigger?”
Another problem. This thing grew so fast. It went from curling up in Wu Xie’s hands to curling up in his lap in the first week. Now it was roughly lion sized.
“Pangzi, it he keeps growing, we’ll have to move him somewhere else. Wushanju won’t be big enough.”
Wang Meng was already complaining about the hooves destroying the wooden floors and the horns damaging the door frames.
“Come on Tianzhen, how much bigger can he get?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pangzi regretted ever speaking. After a month, the qilin was fully grown. It was the same height as an adult deer. Its scales were navy blue or black depending on the light and it’s two horns were a light grey colour. Thankfully, they didn’t have to move the creature, as the courtyard and gardens were more than big enough for it. Pangzi wasn’t sure they could even remove it from the Wushanju. The qilin was still hopelessly devoted to Wu Xie, following his every movement with intelligent brown eyes, racing to his side if it looked like Wu Xie needed help or was in any trouble. Any similarities to the third member of their triangle were quickly and brutally snuffed out. Wu Xie was recovering, looking better and healthier, happier! But anyone who knew him could still see the sadness in his eyes, sense that something was missing from their young friend. Pangzi was not going to ruin that recovery based on a suspicion, and a far fetched one at that.
Going to bed that night, he wasn’t surprised to see the qilin curled up on the nest Wu Xie created at the foot of the bed. Approaching the creature, Pangzi knelt beside it, reaching out to stroke between the horns. He should probably be afraid of the dragon head, but the qilin hadn’t hurt them yet.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this to a mythical creature that isn’t meant to exist, but please look after him. The last person I asked to do that took it very seriously, so I need you to do the same ok?”
Maybe it was a trick of the light, but Pangzi swore that the thing nodded at him.
“Thank you. It won’t be easy, but he’s worth it, trust me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The qilin took Pangzi’s words to heart. He followed Wu Xie everywhere, even into tombs shrinking down to a comfortable size. Knowing that those horns could be used to stab and kill made Pangzi a little apprehensive, but staying on its good side couldn’t be too difficult, could it? They left the tomb, tired and a bit worse for wear, but alive. Wu Xie was silent on the ride home. Their first tomb with Xiaoge was difficult. Pangzi still found himself wanting to call out to the older man to find a trap or follow Wu Xie down a pathway, the name catching in his throat as he realised that there’d be no reply, verbal or otherwise. A few times, he caught Wu Xie turning to the side, excitement on his face, eager to show off whatever he found, only for the smile to fall when he saw the qilin, not his Xiaoge. But they survived this tomb, and they’d survive the others. That’s what they promised Xiaoge before he died, they’d live on and keep exploring tombs. It was the least they could do.
Even with the qilin, he still didn’t like leaving Wu Xie alone. The qilin couldn’t cook or force Wu Xie to eat. Leaving Erbai’s home, having handed over some of the treasures from the tomb, Pangzi settled behind the wheel, taking a minute to relax. Every conversation with Erbai felt like another tomb, traps everywhere for him to fall into. The man couldn’t have a pleasant conversation, could he? Always trying to catch someone out on something. Checking his phone, he was surprised to see a message from Wang Meng. The younger man rarely messaged him, preferring to communicate with his actual boss.
‘You need to come. NOW!’
‘Pangzi!! Get home ASAP!! This is not a drill!’
‘Read your messages! Get back here!’
Stuffing his phone in his pocket, Pangzi sped home, heart in his throat. Had something happened to Wu Xie? Had something happened to the qilin? What was going on? Stopping outside the Wushanju, Pangzi saw Wang Men pacing outside the closed gates. Were those tears? Was Wang Meng crying? Even more scared, Pangzi grabbed the man by the shoulders, shaking him.
“What the hell? What’s with those messages, what is going on?”
“Just go in. You need to see this Pangzi.”
Holding back his own tears, terrified of what he might see, Pangzi steeled himself. He was no coward. And he promised to always be there for his friends, which meant seeing them at their best and worst. Whatever was behind these gates, he would face head on, for Wu Xie, for Xiaoge, for the Iron Triangle.
Pushing the gates, he saw Wu Xie kneeling in the courtyard. He could hear the younger man’s sobbing from here. His attention however, was instantly caught by the person holding Wu Xie in their arms. A very familiar person in a black hoodie with two oddly long fingers attached to the hand stroking through Wu Xie’s hair.
“Xiaoge?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After collapsing next to the two, pulling them into an extremely tight hug and sobbing the courtyard for about an hour, Pangzi managed to get to his feet and send Wang Meng home, ordering him to keep quiet about this for the time being. Once that was done, he and Xiaoge (who was alive! Xiaoge was alive!) pulled a still crying Wu Xie to his feet and deposited the man on the couch, Xiaoge quickly falling into place beside him. Pangzi left the couple to make some tea, needing to do something.
Returning with the tea in hand, he stopped at the door, taking in the scene in front of him. Xiaoge was there, breathing and alive, on their couch. Arms wrapped around Wu Xie, face buried in Wu Xie’s hair, the other man’s face in Xiaoge’s neck, still crying, hands gripping the familiar hoodie (the one from the coat stand Pangzi noted in the back of his mind) so tight it looked like it would rip. Needing answers, Pangzi settled into the armchair, handing the tea to his friends.
“So, what the hell?”
“Pangzi, Pangzi, he was the qilin. All this time, he was the qilin.”
Looking from Wu Xie’s tear stained, blotchy face to Xiaoge’s serious one, he knew they weren’t lying.
“Hah, the eyes never lie, I knew they looked familiar. But how?”
“When a Zhang Qiling dies, they get a second chance. But it’s not easy. The egg has to go to the right person. One who’ll care for it, look after it. Not someone who’ll use it selfishly. Your friend knows Zhang Rishan. After you told him I’d died, he went to the tomb, got the egg and handed it to your friend, telling him that you had to see it. You did and brought me back here. I had to grow and get my memories back before I could be me again.”
“And how did that happen?”
“I kissed him.”
Smile spreading across his face, Pangzi looked at Wu Xie. The other still had his face buried in Xiaoge’s shoulder, ignoring the grin on Pangzi’s face.
“I’m sorry. You kissed him like the prince does Sleeping Beauty? And here I thought you were the damsel in distress.”
“Shut up Pangzi! What would you know about beauties or damsels anyway!”
It felt good to be making fun of the couple again. Xiaoge really was home. Becoming serious again, Pangzi turned back to Xiaoge, wanting confirmation of this ridiculousness.
“You’re saying Wu Xie’s love saved you?”
Xiaoge looked down at the younger man, gentle smile on his face, eyes shining with nothing but adoration for him.
“It wouldn’t be the first time.”
“Ah, this is getting too mushy for me. Xiaoge, stand up and give me a hug. I’m going to bed, let you two catch up. Remember though, not too loud though. I’m an old man, I need my rest.”
Ignoring Wu Xie’s stutters, Pangzi pulled Xiaoge into a tight hug. He was here, he was real. Pangzi wasn’t ashamed to say that he started crying again, tears falling onto Xiaoge’s shoulder.
“Thank you.”
Xiaoge whispered to him, face buried in Pangzi’s collar. His hug was tight, comforting, it was real.
“For looking after him. Thank you.”
“Thank you for coming back to him. To us. I’ve missed you so much.”
Pulling away, he took one more look at the young face in front of him. He still couldn’t believe that this was real, sure he’d wake tomorrow to a qilin at Wu Xie’s side.
“I still have a lot of questions, but they can wait until tomorrow. For now, get some rest, the both of you. We are going to be overrun with visitors once this is revealed.”
Waving to them, Pangzi left the room, stopping in the doorway to take one final look. Xiaoge, living, breathing Xiaoge sat back down, pulling Wu Xie back into his arms. Pangzi couldn’t hear what they were whispering to each other, probably declarations of their undying love, Wu Xie giving out to Xiaoge for sacrificing himself, Xiaoge saying he’d do it again to protect Wu Xie, all the normal things. God, it was sickening.
Pangzi loved it.
A/N So, I was a bit unsure about writing a shapeshifting/reincarnated qilin. Please let me know if this isn’t ok or disrespectful in anyway and I will take this down.

Time Raiders (2016)
Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3
In my quest to consume the entirety of the DMBJ franchise available in English, I have decided to start with the non-canon movie because at least this one has an ending, unlike the train wreck that is Reboot/Chongqi’s pacing. I will probably be bitter about that for all eternity, but I digress. I heard good things about the movie from the bird app, and as I am a Pingxie shipper at heart, I decided to finally watch this one.
P A R T O N E
The cut-in animation to the title was gorgeous, I do so love the qilin in every adaptation. It’s particularly striking here with the gold outline and geometric, maze-like lines. It looks like the cards at the very beginning were being arranged in the image of this qilin.
My first reaction upon seeing white people in a dmbj adaptation is: oh no, the English, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear perfect English that matches the actor’s lips! What a miracle, haha. I remember The Lost Tomb 2 being the worst for how many lines had to be in English, sob.
These look so cool. I see we start off with a good old “seeking immortality” antagonist, and an obsessed collector who has dedicated his whole life to this apparently. As usual, he is a scumbag threatening the locals.
The old guy’s accented English is also better than TLT2, ha. The breathy/nasal quality is not at all uncommon. I don’t know what language the locals speak though.
Me, immediately: Zhang Qiling already??
I know he appears in rather early in TLT1, TLT2, and Reboot/Chongqi, but he’s so often mysteriously absent or stuck behind a gate (or in Reboot’s case, put on a bus) that I got excited, ok.
My favorite Zhang Qilings are the cold-looking pretty boy types in terms of my mental image of the character, but this one is also very easy on the eyes and as usual, unfazed in the face of danger coming at him with a knife. This is the only series in which I’m not bothered by the constant cast change between adaptations (unlike Ever Night), I suppose since it’s been this way from the start.
I’m interested in seeing how the backstories differ from canon. It’s actually rather interesting that this is pretty much an official AU, like that’s kind of wild as a concept. I’m used to the late 1990s/early 2000s anime adding new characters and changing plot points and endings everywhere, but Time Raiders takes it a step further.
Zhang Qiling being an ultra-competent badass who doesn’t even need a weapon to take the bad guys down never changes, no matter the universe. He steamrolls everyone, no questions asked.
Did he- he break the blade with his bare hands hahaha. Oh, yup, and a Zhang Qiling with a weapon is even more dangerous. I see those severed fingers. Such a good fight scene and we’re not even 5 minutes into the movie.
I love how he could have simply fired the arrow while he was still on the statue, then jumped down, but he had to be Extra and fire while he was jumping off haha.
It- the divine piece was right there?? By “beneath the statue” I would have thought it would at least be under it, not in a convenient little slot on the side of the altar area haha. So Zhang Qiling’s mission is to destroy the divine piece(s)? To, um, save the world apparently.
WHO ARE YOU? What an excellent question to ask a Zhang Qiling (and that staring into the mirror shot, too.)… I wonder if this one even knows - it’s possible he doesn’t have his signature amnesia here.
Wait- a gate? I think it’s in a cave or something in the novels, but gates have significance in DMBJ. The cinematography is really nice in these mountain shots. I know nothing about film, but I like the shots in the snowy mountains.
This Zhang Qiling knows and practices martial arts on screen! You would think he’d pull some moves normally, but in the drama-adaptations he tends to just beat people up as efficiently as possible. Sometimes with his sword. Other times he just fights ‘em. I have to admit Jing Boran looks excellent going through some forms. He nailed the force and power underlying every movement, then exploding outward with a strike. I do like the impression it leaves.
I, on the other hand, am an absolute noodle and look ridiculous when I do martial arts.
What in the world is happening in this flashback scene with the weird CGI qilin. Ah, it’s when he received his tattoo. That was super dramatic.
Wushanju is looking real edgy with the heavy iron gate on the interior, haha.
He is puzzling (ha!) over those cards so intensely you’d think it was a thousand piece puzzle instead haha. You’re almost there! Just a few more to finish the qilin!
Aw, is this our Wu Xie? Haha his facial hair is- hm. But I love his voice it’s so soft. Really fits that “Mr. Naive” vibe.
Is that. Is that the author of the series. I found out that he makes cameos in almost all (if not all of) the adaptations!
NO. ONLY I CAN FINISH THE PUZZLE. HANDS OFF BUDDY.
Why are there so many pigeons in here. Who let them inside.
A writer, who came to hear his story and turn it into a novel- HA yup it’s the author.
“This should be a story about me and him.”
Ahh I’m loving it already. DMBJ is the ultimate bromance story. Fair warning, I do ship Pingxie so my shipper goggles will be on throughout the movie. But even without shipping, you do have to admit the series is a bromance underneath all the mystery – between the Iron Triangle, between Wu Xie and Xiaoge.
This Wu Xie is a photographer and that is sort of adorable. Already there’s a theme emerging of needing to record events and telling stories. Interesting that he wants to turn his memories into a novel to record his experiences, because otherwise he’s afraid those memories might turn into a mere story in his own head. Wu Xie, that’s a worrying mindset.
Those ancient mask things always make me crack up, I don’t know why.
Ooh, background about Wu Xie’s birth into the Wu family. I’ve never read up to the part in the books where they go into his place in the family in detail. To be fair, his grandfather had three sons and only one of them had any kids – and Wu Xie is his parents’ only child. So, he becomes the only one who can really carry on the family legacy. Aw, I really like seeing his extended family present though! In the dramas we only ever get either his Second or Third Uncle, and he rarely ever mentions his parents even though they’re alive.
And there’s his namesake! The origin of his nickname, and the irony once the story gets into the Sha Hai timeline.
Wu Xie was a bit of a rascal as a kid, haha. To be fair he has a pretty sharp tongue in the novels and is mostly a pure cinnamon roll in the early dramas.
Little Wu Xie in a suit is so adorable. Nooo kid don’t go into locked up abandoned places. He’s already so adventurous haha. Seems that it’s not actually abandoned judging by all the lights on, but.
UH. MASKED MAN BEHIND YOU. I think he wants that item back. This is why you don’t go into abandoned places, kid. He definitely does not learn his lesson though. Also why are you still holding onto that thing, just drop it, I think he wants it back.
Haha he kept one of the coins.
WOAH. Every month someone in your family dies?? That’s uh- sort of traumatic. Also that would be a really good first line for a novel…Just saying. I do love the singing though.
Oh, the Nine Families exist in this universe too! They even give a quick explanation about the ranking system.
Oh yeah, I love how Wu Xie is such a nerd for all this knowledge of ancient texts and tombs. And YES HE FINALLY DOCUMENTS STUFF FOR ONCE.
Uncle Three looked dead for a moment there, scared the shit out of me too.
VAMPIRE MOTHS? Oh I hate bugs I would not be okay lol. WHOOPS. You guys are really good at reading ancient texts on the fly lol.
That’s the mask he has in the beginning of the film, isn’t it. NO DON’T TOUCH THINGS IN TOMBS. AHHH. So you just put it on your face?? Well that was a stupidly simple way to open the door. I’m guessing the creator didn’t care if anyone opened it.
This guy just severed his own arm, ok…and how many years later is his hand still clinging to it? UH. THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T TOUCH THINGS IN TOMBS. Then he proceeds to steal the box thing.
Ah the white dude again. I am so happy there is GOOD ENGLISH though haha.
Oh, hi Zhang Qiling. Just hanging out on a rooftop I see.
He looks so melancholy. Someone give him a hug! This adaptation makes him more human, less stoic robotic superhuman, I noticed. You rarely see him eat or drink anything in the other adaptations, but here he’s just chilling on a rooftop having some drinks haha. It’s ok. I love all the Zhang Qilings.
WHAT THE HELL, LIGHTNING? What the hell is this high tech machinery haha. Eight days? Coincidentally eight days after sitting in a tomb for how many years.
That is a very Extra bookcase to hold a book that apparently has ALL the secrets.
WOW that is a fancy notebook. It looks so beat up in the other versions haha. In this one, it even gets its own hidden shelf in a giant portable bookshelf!
The props for this franchise are so cool and detailed. I always wish they would show more of the creative process in the BTS, I’m such a nerd for that stuff. The Longest Day in Chang’an was pretty good at that, which is half of my enjoyment of that show haha!
I’m also still pleasantly surprised they bothered to incorporate other languages. I’m not sure what the Snake Lady and the old man in the beginning were speaking, but at least the English is good.
I can’t believe they worked in a steampunk chastity belt this movie went all out, huh. Also with these weirdly high tech structures and lightning and moving tomb structures.
And all the pieces start coming together! So that’s why it’s believed they hold the secret to immortality. What a steampunk-looking key.
Is that a writing desk??
Oh, they’re getting a team together to go tomb raiding! Ha, forget money! You may or may not end up dying on this adventure, so who cares about money, right.
He’s so cute standing there with his camera. Look at the little smile as he watches everything going on!
It’s a desk and a storage container?? Oh, there are ~qualifications~ to going on tomb raiding. Makes sense. That is the oddest looking sword.
Must appreciate Zhang Qiling’s fingers in every adaptation. They look very strong and steady here. Let’s not talk about the slooow trailing across the handle.
Wow did you really just throw sand in his face. Have we not learned not to mess with Zhang Qiling after he trounced that first guy who attacked him. I love the fight scenes so much after the bore-fest that was Reboot/Chongqi’s second half of Season 1.
Super pretty, but why did it cause him to stop and stare in the middle of the fight?
This is like a Final Fantasy sword haha. Also I think you should stop while you’re ahead, why did you think a table would stop this dude. (Hey, it’s Da Kui! He was in the novel but not TLT1.).
It’s HERE. Their first meeting. How did he know the coin was on that cord? It wasn’t visible, I don’t think. But uh. That was a hilarious move on his part, he is so Extra?? He just casually flicks the necklace off with his big-ass sword and it drops into his hand. Then casually goes “oh, here, you dropped this” as if he wasn’t the one responsible for it coming off in the first place!!
HERE IT COMES. The unnecessarily long eye contact. Pingxie in every adaptation needs a Staring Into Your Eyes scene.
Real smooth.
Ahh this Wu Xie is such a cutie. He’s like a puppy.
WHAT. Third Uncle, I can’t believe you let him tag along so easily haha. In the beginning he was scolding Wu Xie to never get involved in tomb business, then what happens? They’re going tomb raiding!!
Next Up: to the tomb we go! This can’t end badly or anything what are you talking about.

Trip to Taipei/Hualien/Taichung/Puli, Taiwan (Part 3)
Part 1 here (Hualien). Part 2 here (Taipei). Part 4 here (Taichung/Puli). Part 5 here (Puli). Part 6 here (Puli/Taichung/Taipei).
Day 4
Woke up around 9:30am today. One of my friends wanted to go somewhere to buy tea leaves and left earlier to buy it while we waited in the hotel room. That friend came back around 10:15am, and we left to find breakfast. We went to a bread shop and I bought a baguette sandwich and some other thing I don’t remember.
We ate while walking, and we headed off to Pingxi/Shifen. It takes a little less than two hours to get there, so it’s a pretty long journey.
Anyway, Shifen is known for two things. Its street food and releasing sky lanterns. You’re supposed to write your wishes on the lantern, then a fire is lit under it and you release it. It floats off into the sky... never to be seen again.
We didn’t release any lanterns.
I only bought one street food item, and it was some ice cream with peanuts wrapped in a pancake. It’s pretty nice. The ice cream isn’t really ice cream though, it’s more like some sort of sorbet. I have no idea.
We managed to see someone’s lantern (and wishes) burn to ashes. All these lanterns are being released in between two rows of two storey buildings (photo below), so there’s always a risk of the lanterns hitting the buildings. The typhoon was also due to hit today, so it’s particularly windy.
Anyway, for some reason we decided to go to the Pingxi waterfall first instead of having lunch. It’s 2pm now. For this whole trip, our meal times are all messed up 😅
My friend’s cap got blown away and off the bridge that goes across this lake, never to be seen again 😩. Ah well.
Another suspension bridge. This one swayed from side to side rather much.
A small waterfall on the way to the main one.
The swing on the left oh the above photo works, so we sat on it. It’s been a while since I sat on a swing. This one isn’t as nice though. I think the single person ones are nicer.
There’s a mini street food area just before the waterfall here.
I bought a frozen dragon fruit. I thought it was ice cream but it just turned out to literally be a frozen dragon fruit.
Papaya on the tree. People actually wrapped it up already. Lol.
Doggies! Animals are very prevalent in Taiwan. They roam around freely, and owners bring them around freely. It’s great. It’s particularly cute when their owners put their pets in their bags and carry them around. They also sit in the bags while on motorbikes.
First glimpse of the Pingxi Waterfall. It’s really wide and majestic.
And then the typhoon hit(?) I’m not really sure if it’s the typhoon, but the rain was going sideways and the winds were really strong. Fortunately there was shelter nearby and it only lasted 10 minutes or so.
The above waterfall photo is from above Waterfall Obeservation Area 4. We decided to go to the Natural Experience Area to see what it’s about.
It turned out to be a hut, and a pathway with named plants.
Anyway, down to the Observation Area 1.
And then Observation Area 2.
Then Observation Area 4.
You can get really close here. I love the first drop of the waterfall. It’s so neat and calm and pretty.
Anyway, that’s pretty much it for the waterfall. It’s now 4pm and we still haven’t had lunch 😅
We went through the mini street food area and my friend suggested to eat there. I didn’t really want to, since the street food didn’t look to my liking. It was mainly fried stuff.
We continued back to Shifen. We saw a cafe and just decided to enter.
We decided to sit all the way inside the cafe... and what’s this?
A cat corner!
I was pretty amused by this cat. He kept trying to stick his paw out to grab food. I think he somehow threw some food out of his cage. Later he sticks his paw out to touch the corner of the walls. Really cute and amusing.
We ordered waffles to share, and a rice dish to eat.
The waffles are not bad. Could have been crispier though.
A fat cat suddenly walked in o.o. I think he followed the shopkeeper in. He came out and chased the cat out.
I ordered braised pork with rice. It’s pretty good, but really filling because there’s a lot of rice.
Random cats hiding under an umbrella on our way back. There were also people releasing fireworks nearby. Didn’t manage to get a picture or video of that though.
Anyway, back to the train station, back to Taipei. We decided to change our tickets to Taichung today, since the tickets we bought weren’t actually fixed yet. It’s paid for, but you still need to go to the counter and decide on a time for the tickets you want. We decided to get the tickets for 12:31pm. And since we were back at Taipei Main Station again, we decided to walk down Taipei City Mall again. This time, the other side of it (it has 2 lanes).
Sumikko Gurashi is really popular in Taiwan. They’re everywhere. Stickers, bags, plushies, gachapon, claw machines, motorbike helmets... Understandable, since they’re so cute.
Custom skinned consoles are always a joy to look at. And look at that copper controller, it’s really sexy.
Then we came across someone dancing. He was playing Just Dance using the Kinect. The Kinect is really a wonderful piece of equipment, too bad it kind fizzed out and died. There were people behind him following the dance as well. He danced really well, he’s not some amateur.
Then we came across a retro shop. Oh boy I’ve never seen most of these before.
Ancient Relics, these things.
They also sell the games to go along with the consoles. So if you want to access some of the past, I don’t think you’ll have any issues here (I’m assuming the consoles work).
I also bought a White Blood Cell. Not an actual one, but the guy from Hataraku Saibou.
Then, we came across an Indonesian section. I was kind of perplexed by this. Hmmm.
Interesting.
Then I saw some people carry really huge ice creams, and I tried to look for the shop. NT$35 for a double scoop at that size?! A must buy. There were three shops side by side, and one of them had a queue of over ten people, so nope.
I forgot to take a picture before eating it, so here’s a smaller half licked one. It’s matcha on top and chocolate at the bottom.
Dinner time! We walked back to Ximending and went into one random shop.
I ate the chicken noodles, and my friends ate the other two.
I also ordered some milk tea with pearls. I mean it’s Taiwan, the origin of milk tea. How could you not order it?
It was much later than we thought, as we spent too much time walking around in Taipei City Mall. We planned to go to the arcade at night and it closes at 11pm. It’s now 9:30pm. Yup, a messed up meal time again.
My friend left an umbrella in the shop we had dinner at, so we had to go back to find it. Fortunately, the umbrella was still there.
Anyway, arcade time!
The unique thing about this arcade is that it has a batting cage, and a BB gun shooting range.
My friend who’s interested in baseball went to play in the batting cages, and I went with my other friend to explore the arcade. The arcade wasn’t really interesting, the games aren’t that fun. We played the taiko drums, which wasn’t fun because it was too easy. Then my friend decided to play this game where you guide a ball through a course and try not to let the ball fall off. It’s a scam! It falls off at totally unexpected places. There’s already obvious places it could fall off from, and they aren’t easy to avoid. But they just had to make it harder with unexpected traps.
After that, we wanted to try the guns, but it was too close to 11pm and they weren’t accepting anymore players. We went down to the arcade just one level below, which wasn’t very interesting either. The doors closed to leave a small gap by then. Getting chased out.
Anyway, back to the hotel, and the end of day 4.
Part 1 here (Hualien). Part 2 here (Taipei). Part 4 here (Taichung/Puli). Part 5 here (Puli). Part 6 here (Puli/Taichung/Taipei).

Time Raiders (2016)
Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3
I managed to fit this in three posts!
P A R T T H R E E
He really is too precious for words.
He doesn’t even miss a beat. He takes a second to look down and sees that he’s fucked, then remembers in an instant about how important memories are to Zhang Qiling and he wants to leave them with him if he’s really gonna die.
“I want you to hand it to me yourself.”
Ugh that’s such a classic line of reasoning I can’t. It’s so sappy (I love it).
This is definitely a very different Zhang Qiling. His voice gets so harsh when he commands Wu Xie not to move - you know it’s his worry manifested as anger “I told you not to move!” Then his voice gets much softer when he says that line.
“I’ll catch you.” Ahh that’s Zhang Qiling, as long as he can, he’ll always be there to save Wu Xie.
LOL CAN YOU NOT SPEAK??
This background music is so Soft.
Look at him.
You’re a real heartbreaker. He survives, but you really do know how to give Zhang Qiling a heart attack in this adaptation.
IT’S MOVING. Is this an ancient lab. What the heck haha.
GO AH NING.
At least in the other drama adaptations, Wu Xie always did discern that she truly did care for her comrades, even if she didn’t show it or insisted she didn’t. Out of all the female characters in DMBJ, she’s my favorite. She’s vicious, yes, and willing to use a lot of underhanded means to get to her goal, but she’s also a lot more than just a villain who gets in the protagonists’ way. Oh yeah, add at least one other to the death count, yes?
OH NO WU XIE. Haha Pangzi is in a pot again. He accidentally got left behind. You gotta love the sheer absurdity that surrounds anything Pangzi does.
I’m surprised by how well this movie got Wu Xie’s personality down. He’s not stupid, even if he is a bit naive and good-natured. He might actually be bluffing but hey it was a good call.
LOL BEHIND YOU. Yup, Zhang Qiling to the rescue! Ah, we have our Iron Triangle! Well, I doubt they’re really going to get enough exposure to call them that but hey.
Lol the two of them can barely hold this sword.
Wu Xie is so low-key clever haha. He’s also good at bluffing, which you wouldn’t think given he’s always called naive/innocent.
Aw look at him scurry back to Zhang Qiling’s side.
I would also like to know what the heck we’re looking for down here.
He’s an old friend pfft. This old man.
Turn human beings into trees?? I guess…that is sort of a form of immortality.
DMBJ in a nutshell? We all go down to a tomb, get into life and death situations, become friends, and decide to live and die together.
At least Ah Ning isn’t as scummy as she was in the other adaptations lol.
Lol this became a different iron triangle…Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, and Ah Ning.
WTF. Have we traveled to the center of the earth what is this place.
And where the flip did everyone else go??
Aww look at him go. Still insisting he’d accompany Zhang Qiling to the end. Which ripped my heart out in the books. Zhang Qiling just wants you to be safe, ok.
Look at that little smile.
This is the movie of Zhang Qiling getting to show off constantly and I live for it.
Oh gosh all the zombie people are waking up.
Well this tree woman is really freaking creepy. Also, everyone has become a Zhang Qiling fan haha. They literally are just here to watch.
So you…want worm trees to rule the world. Ok.
This is such a weird final battle haha. Hey, looks like the gang’s all here! Oh great, wormy things. There goes another death. Ah, yes, the zombie people are here now. Everyone’s dropping like flies, two people fell into the lava I think…
Wu Xie and Pangzi are such disasters lol.
WU XIE. You give the knife to Pangzi, then run into Pangzi so he’ll stab the zombie??
Oh it’s the sad music. Is everyone gonna die??
Da Kui got a cooler death in this version at least…
“If I totally lost myself one day, there’s still someone who would remember me.”
ZHANG QILING. CAN WE NOT WITH THE HEART ACHE.
Aw, there goes Wu Xie’s “I’ll remember you” line. Oh? He wants the coin. Ahh this is - “I’ll give it to you once we get back” is never a good line to say!! It means one of you is going to die, usually, lol. Here we are raising flags everywhere…
Ahh the qilin scene from the beginning of the movie comes back! And blood + sword = can actually hurt the weird plant appendages.
We solve all our problems with the flute! Wu Xie is the bug whisperer now lol.
…Zhang Qiling already has a sort of immortal life what exactly are you offering him.
Well, these bug can eat metal so.
Haha he’s trying to appeal to Mr. Hendrix. Oh Wuxie, that is so like you.
THE PUPPY DOG EYES + THE CORNIEST LINE EVER
It’s the puppy dog eyes that did it. I know I’m right lol. And Ah Ning gets her change of heart here along with Mr. Hendrix.
Aw Pangzi and Ah Ning. I never thought I’d see you two on good terms.
WU XIE. He’s so determined.
THEY LOST HOLD OF THEIR IGNITERS?? Is that why one guy had to stay behind.
Oh, how the roles have reversed!
Aww look at them!! This movie is so good for the Pingxie content?? I am kicking myself for holding out on watching it for so long.
The way they just laugh out loud, look at the terrifying yet amazing scene in front of them, and then simultaneously glance at each other and give a soft little laugh each??
“I said I’d take care of you.”
It’s just- aahhh I am dying inside, dying.
You guys want to get off this thing now? You know if this was a man and a woman, they would’ve already had a dramatic we-almost-died kiss atop this thing already lol.
I REGRET NOT LOCKING YOU IN THE TRUCK MYSELF.
HAHAHA.
ZHANG QILING YOU DRAMATIC BASTARD.
Ah Ning actually saves him this time!
Look at what you did! You made him sad!
TEARS. YOU MADE HIM CRY.
Ooh the coin! Ahh no, this is sad. He gives him the coin even though Zhang Qiling couldn’t come out of the tomb with him.
And the funeral song just to drive home the SAD.
?? So was Zhang Qiling the one in the mask this whole time? Since he was a kid? It makes sense with how he knew about the coin then.
THAT’S THE END?? So all we know for sure is that Wu Xie lived.
No wonder why I saw someone once call this movie “Wu Xie’s fever dream” lol.
But UGH all that Pingxie content just gutted me. This movie was shockingly good?
I mean, it ended with mysteries still lingering. Did Third Uncle survive? Wu Xie says he’s waiting for a friend at the very beginning, so is he living in denial that Zhang Qiling managed to live?
But all in all, the mysteries are part of its ending and I think I’m ok with that. Better than watching all the drama adaptations and getting frustrated because I know there’s more story and then the season ends (Reboot/Chongqi was so unsatisfying because of how they split the seasons I think…).
But UGH. Lu Han’s Wu Xie will forever live in my heart. I didn’t expect to get so attached to him.
