grew up dirt poor in appalachian ohio. my dad went to work at a fancy bigshot company one day, and suddenly i was hearin about how appalachian folks are stupid and that we'd have to get out of there whenever possible. when i was 18, we finally did move, but she hasn't left me. i miss going down to the creek and seeing the amish kids standing in knee high water, catchin fish with their hands. i miss going outside and hearing johnny paycheck and hank williams playing in the distant woods. it breaks my heart to know my pa probably thought how he did because a cityboy coworker must've made fun of him or somethin.
now i go to a school, FAR from appalachia. they made fun of the twang in my voice, so you know what i did? i made it worse. i made my accent pluckier than a banjo string and i brag about my culture as if it's something so complex that they'd never understand it. if someone insinuates that i'm stupid for saying "down yonder" or "si gogglin," i'll flip it on them. how do you change a tire? name at least 5 tools that mechanics use. describe me the anatomy of a sink. what's the difference between a nut and a screw?
i'm way better at hands on stuff, just because i unapologetically embraced my culture. the twang in my voice feels more natural than the accent i put on to hide myself back then. my mind is more sound when i let my home flow through me, no matter what people think of it

honestly my mother was a huge champ about her eight-year-old asking to be bought an unabridged edition of the Odyssey for a birthday present, and then she was an equally huge champ about reading her eight-year-old the unabridged Odyssey as a bedtime story and pausing every four lines to define something for me, and let me just say that I have fucking TREASURED the opportunity to reverse that old tradition by more or less forcing her to sit on my couch and listen to Epic and pause it every four lines for my dissertation

A-anime?
you know, sometimes I forget that Twst is actually an isekai that starts with the protagonist getting run over by an inexplicable horse-drawn carriage. and every time I'm reminded is a delight because that's AMAZING.
also. look. okay. there's a lot of very fun stuff in the trailer but I am obsessed with that Crowley surprised pikachu face. me when I spend all my keys and gems literally hours before they announce overblot SSRs and drop the anime trailer:
Tumblr media
#twisted wonderland#twst anime#<- gonna use that for anime stuff in case anyone wishes to filter it#this is the point where i once again have to admit that i have not really read the manga#(i've liked what i've seen but it's very hard for me to keep up with stuff a lot of the time)#(the anime may actually be easier for me to absorb it in :')#god i GOTTA draw the manga yuus#i kept meaning to when yuuna got revealed but i didn't get around to it before 7-13 ate my brain 😭#anyway the bits they chose for the trailer are pretty interesting to me!#like i think chances are good it was mostly from that one sequence because given the timeline#they probably don't have a ton of 100% finished post-comp footage yet so they probably just took what they have#but also i'm thinking back to how deliberately vague all the game promo stuff was#and...okay again i don't really know how they did it in the manga but i am reminded of how overblotting was actually like. a twist.#a twst twist#like we were introduced to it in the prologue with the mine phantom#but riddle's overblot was an actual SURPRISE and like. an instant reveal that okay THIS is what the story's gonna be about#so i'm just kinda wondering if the anime promos might also like...actively try not to spoil everything#or if they're gonna go full anime-intro 'here's all the super spoilery scenes you can expect to see :)'#basically is the marketing gonna skew towards new viewers or established fans. both valid i'm just curious!#also excuse me for a moment as i reveal myself as a hugely pretentious snob but#oh my god the backgrounds actually have some texture and shape and are taking style cues from the game backgrounds#oh my god the castle exterior actually looks illustrative and fantastic and isn't just a 3d model they plopped in#it's hard to tell at this point how consistent that'll be since most of the trailer is in the mirror chamber#but i'm just SO happy to see it! hopefully this means they weren't crunched to fuck and are able to really go ham#(the pre-isekai scenes all look more generic modern anime so like...is that a conscious artistic choice they made)#(because that would be incredible. holy shit.)

Obsessive ASOIAF theorizing misses the point of the stories, I think! George's goal is to tell us a sweeping fantasy with heavy romantic elements and really beautiful characterization grappling with themes of redemption, power, agency, identity, love, loss, growth, death, (re)birth, etc etc. He obviously has some big plot points and mysteries, but those serve to reinforce the themes (e.g. Rhaegar and Lyanna are there to talk to us about love and tragedy and cycles and identity). George isn't chucking in a mystery to just have a wild and shocking reveal, he's putting it in to serve a narrative point and when you lose sight of that you are losing the plot, quite literally.
To me, it's much more interesting to see how certain themes develop over time as George sits with them (e.g. Jaime's progression from the outline into his POV character form is a perfect example), historical inspirations (BUT not as a way to crack a code!!!), and literary allusions and references.

Why the fuck is ANYONE excited for Robert Downey Junior as VICTOR VON FUCKING DOOM??!
Regardless of the fact that Disney once again whitewashing a Romani character for the third time in a fucking row makes it an automatic fail.
There is exactly one good option that is automatically disqualified due to the amount of money being spent on him.
RDJ is getting an 80 MILLION dollar pay plus additional expenses PER MOVIE. Disney is gonna play him up as much as possible. Let's look at the options for him as Doom as I see it.
They play him as an evil Tony Stark variant. This will only lead to the worst, cheapest, "I just learned how to write" tier, bullshit drama you could possibly imagine. Peter going "OMG he looks just like Tony" is not good writing, it is trash.
They play him as Victor Von Doom. Why the fuck did they hire the actor who played their biggest character to play another character who has nothing to do with Tony? One Quip, one change in his tone, a single look at his face and the entire illusion is destroyed and you just end up confused that RDJ is back but not as Tony for some reason.
And again, regardless of the fact that casting a generic white dude to play a Romani character already disqualifies him, the only way this could possibly work is if he completely changes his voice to be unrecognizable, never shows his face once, and none of the characters comment on the fact that he looks like Tony. In which case they could have hired literally anyone else. They could have hired a voice actor and a stunt man and gotten better results.
This is the most desperate, dishonorable, bullshit casting choice I could have possibly imagined. And that's not even getting into how much this will utterly and irrevocably fuck over the Comics Doom for the sake of "Brand Synergy"
And if anyone tries to pull up What If? Iron Man Demon in an Armor or Infamous Iron Man, you clearly didn't actually read those fucking comics because I have and I know that they have nothing to do with this.

The Heart Killers EP3 | Kantbison + Physical Chemistry (P2)
I can't get enough of the touchy, grabby things. The way Bison rubs his thumb on Kant's shoulder. Kant doing a similar little thumb sweep on Bison's arm. The fond little peck. The way Kant is always so handsy, wide open palms searching up Bison's thighs or knees.

small details in X-Men '97 that rip my heart and serve it on a plate:
this gesture here - Magneto being the one in the party to acknowledge Morph's trauma and what a big ask it is to revisit their past. He knows. He's been there before. And wants Morph to know he's not alone.

Maglor who stayed in Middle Earth all the way through till present day, or close to it, and then for whatever reason finally ends up going back to Valinor, but he has enthusiastically picked up all the modern day curses and slang and sometimes when he talks he's so completely incomprehensible to his family that they're not sure if they want to cry or hit him
aka: Maglor comes back to Valinor and instead of getting a traumatized son/brother back like the expected, they find that Maglor did in fact get over his shit eventually but was just having a blast becoming an agent of chaos and now he's brought all that back with him <3
#atlanta rambles#Maglor#I just had a vision pop in my head of Maglor going *out of his way* to be as annoying as possible#to all of his brothers#no one is safe#Fingon thinks it's fucking hilarious#doesn't understand anything Maglor is talking about but he picks up the curses with enthusiasm#the cursing spreads and you have elves saying “jesus fucking christ” without even the slightest comprehension of who they're referring to#Maglor learned piglatin at one point from some band of children#and spends a solid week convincing his father that there was in fact a country that spoke this language#he drops random history lore all the time#and Finarfin ends up having the concept of democracy and elections explained to him and drops everything#to make it happen#he'd expected the breaking of the world to happen already and he is SICK of being king#he thinks of the most dramatic modern inventions he can and then woefully tells his father#that oh it's just not possible to make it in Aman#no no it's not that he's bad at his craft it's just *impossible* to make#and then he sits back and enjoys the chaos#Maedhros has never been so happy to have a brother back while also simultaneously wishing he would go the fuck back to where he came from#he makes a point about telling Galadriel and Aredhel about the feminist movement#his work there is done#Fingolfin really feels he should be doing something about all this but has no idea what#Maglor looks at him one day and kind of mock thoughtfully goes hmmm#you know I wonder if they based David & Goliath off your disastrous fight and just felt bad for you so they changed the ending#and then he refuses to elaborate on any it#Maglor is a horrible goose#and he is having a FANTASTIC time

Anyone who says eddie is the normal one about their relationship is kidding themselves. Yes buck injured him but eddie literally shouted at him in a grocery store. Also he literally made buck his son’s guardian in his will. And then didn’t tell him. He said it would have been equally as bad if buck got shot instead of him- implying that losing buck would be equally bad for chris.

Helly finding out the new horrific thing Helena has done to her and immediately fighting back, clawing for every single bit of agency and autonomy she can. Lumon will never break her because the harder they try to stamp down on her the harder she'll lash out in response.
Extra fascinating is that instinct has to exist in Helena too, it's just been repressed after a lifetime of cult shit. But that fire is there and I don't think it's a matter of if it will explode, but when and why.
Helly's main advantage is (ironically given how they try to keep in the dark about everything) her clear sightedness. She never buys into the bullshit but she's not cruel about it to her fellow victims, just blunt and snarky. And most of all, defiant towards those she correctly identifies as abusing their power over her.
Meanwhile so far while we've see moments and hints of Helena's rebellious spirit, the only time she has properly spiralled off the Lumon approved course this season is when it comes to Mark. And in that situation she is always deliberately keeping him in the dark, craving the love he has to give but never letting it be an honest and even playing field between them. And also refusing to acknowledge that his innie is like. A person.
All this to say, I feel like when she does snap it could really go either way. She could direct her fury at the Lumon folk who are actually keeping her caged, or she could get even worse when it comes to fucking with the people in the even smaller cage that she's got power over. Either way I'm here for it.

A lot of creators in bookish spaces (ones who I really respect and share similar tastes with) keep talking about how amazing The Locked Tomb series is and I want to try it, but then I hear it’s sci-fi and I’m just immediately put off.
I don’t really fuck with the genre too much, but I want to give this series a chance, especially after seeing what people have to say about it. But then I’m afraid it’s going to be SUPER HEAVY sci-fi, and that would nottttt be a good time for me.
So my question for the masses is this: is it worth trying out The Locked Tomb series if you’re not a huge sci-fi fan? And be honest lmao. If you think it’s super heavy on the sci-fi elements and that it might be off-putting to someone like me, let me know! But if you think it’s worth pushing through, I want to know that too!
PS - I know the books are confusing as hell and difficult to follow at times, but I’ve already read Malazan Book of the Fallen, so that doesn’t scare me. If anything, that’s a point in TLT’s favor.
