Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum Propaganda Post

the epitome of gaslight gatekeep girlboss, made her own kingdom from biomass and rules it as kind of a dictator, this is called out in-narrative. She once made a task force of elite soldiers and when she came to the conclusion they were too violent she literally just killed them all and moved on. Convinced a king to keep his daughter socially isolated all of her life because she thought she'd be too dangerous, and then in that same kingdom nerely started a war because she just HAD to deface their sacred relics out of fear that they'd be turned into weapons.

She's a borderline dictator who fashioned herself a kingdom entirely populated by her own bioengineered citizens. Her first appearance features her experimenting on corpses. She had to care for herself and her brother in a post apocalyptic wasteland immediately after being spawned from a hive mind. She made a family for herself and they betrayed her and now she trusts nobody. She crushed her robot police force into a cube because they were too brutal. She spies on literally everybody. She's been tired for a very long time. She loses control of her kingdom after losing an election because she's too focused on the comet thats about to crash into the world and regains control after the new princess flees when vampires attack. She does everything out of genuine belief she is doing the right thing. She stops spying on people. She's trying to colonise space because she's paranoid the world is going to end. She's constantly aware of every threat to her kingdoma nd her people and wants nothing more than to protect them. She went to war with her own uncle. She's made of candy. She's even a lesbian.

She built her kingdom from the ground up herself after the family she created betrayed her. She's accomplished this though a lot of war crimes and scientific affronts to God. No, seriously. She created life on a whim and discards it just as easily, her experiments are sentient and yet she holds to remorse against killing them en mass, trapping them in a sort of psychic limbo, or straight up abandoning them. She loves to play with life. But she actually does care about her citizens, who she keeps intentionally stupid in order to keep control. She also holds control by spying on everyone, having cameras in kingdoms that aren't even her own, and gps trackers on all her people. She will sabotage and meddle in the affairs of other kingdoms so her own can prosper. She's called a dictator and a fascist on multiple occasions. She pushes the people in her life away to focus on this. And she's gay.

Created an entire civilization from scratch because she was lonely, then surveillance stated the hell out of them. Also did like a bunch of other morally questionable things but the surveillance state is the only one I can remember off the top of my head and I can't be bothered to look anything up right now. Despite this, she's a supporting protaganist who helps the heroes at least as much as she fucks things up for them. All This has lead to the most ice-cold video essay take that she's "THE REAL VILLAIN OF THE SHOW" no, you fucking idiot, she's a Morally Gray Girlboss

With “Obsidian” coming out in two days, it really is time for a definitive history of Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship. For a list of Bubbline episodes, check out my Bubbline Guide (and part two) - which I need to update, I know I know. For this post, I wanted to highlight how far this pairing has come and what Bubbline means to queer representation in children’s cartoons.

This is less of an analysis and more of an overview with links to more information on specific incidents to keep it (relatively) brief. I say it’s a definitive history but it isn’t an exhaustive one, so do check out the links included to learn more about how we got here. I realize not everyone cares about these kinds of things but I think it’s important to know how hard Adventure Time’s creators had to fight. Bubbline is a pioneer ship in many ways but it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

Initial Concepts

As is the case with much of Adventure Time, the initial concept of who the characters of Bonnibel and Marceline were going to be is very different than what we ended up getting. @gunterfan1992 explores this and other production tidbits in depth in his book so I do recommend checking that out. The short version is that these two were created to be opposites and with a Betty and Veronica type dynamic in mind where they would both be love interest to the protagonist, Finn.

This didn’t quite end up being the case but remnants of this concept are seen in “Go With Me” (March, 2011), the episode with the first on-screen Bubbline interaction. As Marcy helps - and sabotages - Finn in asking Bonnie out, she also becomes a potential love interest for him but she shuts him down immediately. So while Finn’s crush on PB continues, the notion that Marceline would be part of a love triangle is dismissed. Instead, this first Bonnie and Marcy interaction established that the two already know each other and there’s some bitterness in that past.

“What Was Missing” and the Mathematical Controversy

A potential preexisting relationship between the two was further explored in “What Was Missing” (September 2011) just a season later. The episode was written and storyboarded by Rebecca Sugar and eventual showrunner Adam Muto. Sugar was responsible for much of the character depth added to Marceline and later even played, quite aptly, her mother in the Stakes miniseries. It was Sugar who wrote the now beyond iconic “I’m Just Your Problem” based on personal experiences and suggested that Marcy and Bonnie be queer characters with a complicated romantic past.

“What Was Missing” was hugely important in how it hinted at a complex relationship through character interactions, Marceline’s song, and the last scene twist with PB’s shirt. The AT crew were supportive of the idea and sneaked in plenty of queer subtext, but this is where I have to point out that 2011 was a very different time and it’s thanks, in part, to Bubbline that things have changed. Autostraddle’s article from back when covers what is now known as the Mathematical controversy. Audiences picked up on the subtext and Cartoon Network was not having it. The popularity of the ship soared but the execs were not taking to queer implications kindly.

Great Bubbline Drought

So, the ship has sailed but controversy looms over it. “What Was Missing” s subtle by today’s standards but it was enough to keep Marceline and Bubblegum apart for two years on-screen. Each character went through wonderful development in the meantime, as did the show itself, but there’s a certain sense of bitterness to what came to be known as the Great Bubbline Drought. CN got so afraid of the potential backlash that they waited two years to have a new episode featuring the pair, “Sky Witch” (July 2013), by which point Sugar had left AT to work on her own show, Steven Universe. I’m happy that Sugar got to create her own show and push for even more queer representation, but it’s also sad that she never got to write more for the ship she pioneered.

“Sky Witch” still happened, though, and featured even more subtext, from PB’s side this time around. The shirt returned and there was hope as Marcy and Bonnie were seen hanging out together more often (”Red Starved” and “Princess Day”). Another controversy threatened to emerge in August 2014 when Olivia Olson, Marceline’s voice actress said that creator Pendleton Ward had confirmed a pre-show Bubbline romance. It was a messy ordeal with deleted tweets and questions about whether the two could get together again in the series. Fortunately, though, things changed in the three years between 2011 to 2014 and another Bubbline drought didn’t follow.

The Season That Changed Everything

It took another two years after “Sky Witch” but the ball was finally, inevitably, relentlessly rolling. “Varmints” premiered in November 2015 and three episodes later, the Stakes miniseries kicked off. What season 7 meant wasn’t just breadcrumbs and (not so) subtle songs anymore: suddenly, there were too many Bubbline moments to count. “Varmints” served as a follow-up to “What Was Missing” and a final reconciliation, and though Stakes was primarily about Marcy, it also developed her relationship with Bonnie. Afterwards, it became clear that Bubbline was heading somewhere.

It’s worth noting that the cultural context also changed between when “Sky Witch” and “Varmints” aired. In December 2014, The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami beginning their romantic relationship, and Rebecca Sugar was making Steven Universe more and more explicitly queer by the day. Adventure Time started the ball rolling but now it wasn’t alone as a popular Western cable cartoon with queer characters. However, Bubbline was still very much subtext at this point, just with significantly more hope of becoming more.

Late Series Entanglement

But at what point does subtext become plain text? Bubbline fans sure did have fun with that question between Stakes and the finale. Bonnie and Marcy became near inseparable, with most of their major appearances involving one another from this point on. These included the meet the adoptive dad date “Broke His Crown” (March 2016), the Elements miniseries (April 2017) and the nigh on obnoxiously on the nose “Marcy & Hunson” (December 2017). In fact, all but two of Marceline’s major appearances from season 7 on included Bonnie - the exceptions being “Everything Stays” as part of Stakes, and “Ketchup”, which really wasn’t any less gay.

Bubbline moments really did become too many to count, with the vast majority of them having romantic implications. And with queer representation becoming more and more prominent in Western animation, canon Bubbline romance seemed like a question of when rather than if. I’d like to point out here how this was often frustrating, though. After the very rocky start, this relationship was thriving and was really basically confirmed, but that last little push to make it undeniably a part of queer history was still needed.

“Come on!” - The End and Beyond

The almost three years that passed between Stakes and “Come Along With Me” (September 2018) were much more tolerable than the Drought; after all, there was plenty of Bubbline content in the later seasons. The big question as the finale came was whether Adventure Time would fizzle out on its early pioneer of a wlw ship or follow through, once and for all. Almost four years after LoK ended and just before season 1 of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power dropped, Marcy and Bonnie had an emotional moment, kissed on screen, and ended the series together.

The intricacies of why a kiss was needed as a signifier of romance is a discussion for another day. But wouldn’t it have been strange after almost a decade of build-up for them not to seal the deal with a kiss? And to think it almost didn’t happen, as by that point it was so obvious they were together. Again, I direct your attention towards Paul Thomas’s book, he explains how it was storyboard artist Hanna K. Nyström’s call to add this final detail. Because, come on! Sometimes, you need to be as clear as possible, and that’s the case with queer representation in animation.

Since the finale, the comics have been continuing the Bubbline train - which are not technically canon but one can have fun regardless. In any case, the existence of Marcy and Bonnie’s relationship, of their queer identities, is not something that can reasonably be denied. It was a long road, and, make no mistake, an arduous one, but this is the story of a win. A win for storytelling and a win for wlw relationships.

We’ll Build Our Own Forever

So, there you have it, a Bubbline timeline of sorts. In March of 2011 we had the first on-screen interaction and now, in November of 2020, we’re getting a 45-minute-long special with the two of them as the central characters. They’re canonically in love, with King Princess covers of Bubbline songs and more. I tried to contain myself, for once, and not write too much. I think it’s important that people have a general idea of just how monumental all of this is and how, even just 9 years ago, “Obsidian” would have been totally inconceivable.

Some of this might have come as a surprise to you. It’s certainly not been easy to get to where we are now with Bubbline and it’s yet to be seen how open “Obsidian” will be about the relationship. I’ve been talking about Bubbline for years and attempted to chronicle their relationship many times so I’m happy I’ve finally done it from this perspective as well.

Given AT's love for retconning things into making sense with later material I wonder why they never really tried to do that with PB's feelings for Finn? They never tried to justify what she was thinking in Too Young. Did they have literally no conceivable idea how to make it work and just hoped everyone would forget about it? (yet they referenced it in Hero Heart)

YEAh, I.... i dont know. i think they did hope everyone would get over it. finn certainly hoped he would forget it. 

talking of retcons - mr creampuff

i have a few questions.... He was pleasantly mentioned in Slumber Party Panic as them having used to date, which was sus because he died of old age. Then they revealed PB was 18, but that she could also change age, so did this mean she’s been 18 for a long time? (yes)

The Vault had implied that she’d created him to be “sort of” her boyfriend as one of her many experiments. This checked out considering she also created candy people to deliberately marry them together, though it was sketch. 

But the writers presumably agreed that was a bit weird, then “Bonnibel Bubblegum” revealed she didn’t make him, she was railroaded into that non-relationship by her “uncle” trying to take away agency from her so he could carry out his dummification plot, and send her off with dimwitted Creampuff forever. (Poor mr creampuff....) 

Then I can assume she.... carried on the facade of the relationship? Because it’s all part of her Sims experiment with the candy people, as per this episode and The Vault? 

(If you take the fact she very deliberately used the BOYS book as rat litter, i am convinced the last few seasons of the show try to suggest she’s not into boys at all. In the storyboard for “Jelly Beans Have Power”, Patience even had a fucking sign up on the wall pointing to her and saying “NOT INTO BOYS?” which got replaced by an equally accurate but less hilarious sign saying “SEMI-HERMIT” in the full episode. Then there was that scene in Obsidian with the towel blowing off where Marceline reacted but PB didn’t, which is most likely doubling as a joke about gay disinterest.  I sympathise with this interpretation because she’s a character that had a lot of people expect her to hook up with boys over the course of the series, and she’s had to resist the pressure of every advance, so maybe it made her super relatable to the gay writers who came on later. It does raise some questions though, but none that can’t be dismissed as braco’s love spell, her actually not showing any interest in creampuff [and crushing on the vampire girl down the road at the same time], or her being turned into an immature 13 year old with finn.... i dont know)

#1-Adventure Time (2010-2018)

I mean...what else?

The Plot: The magical land of Ooo has many things: A kingdom made of candy, a sociopathic Ice King, and even a self-proclaimed Vampire Queen. Amongst all this chaos are two adventures: A human boy named Finn, the Human, and his magical dog/best friend/adopted brother (yes, really) named Jake, the Dog. These two then go on adventure after adventure, facing against the many oddities that the Land of Ooo offers. What type of dangers? Well...you’re just going to have to watch the show to find out.

Before I start praising the crap out of this show, there’s one thing I want to get off my chest. You see, I hate Top X lists that always end with “the one that started it all.” It comes across as lazy because there is no way the first story tops every other one after it. Case in point: when looking at the best episodes of your favorite shows, how often do you see the first episode making the top ten, hell, even the top five? Not often, I bet. And sure, you can make the argument that “Without X, there wouldn’t have been Y,” but is that even a fair comparison? Sure, Disney wouldn’t have been as big as it is now without Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs being a success, but does that make it right to ignore great movies like Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and The Lion King (1994)? Sure, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is the reason why fans love to hate Star Wars in the first place, but how often do you hear people saying Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the franchise. And sure, the Marvel Cinematic Universe wouldn’t have existed without Iron Man being a box office hit, but with movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, can you really say Iron Man is the best in the franchise anymore? To me personally, if you’re going to pick “the one that started it all,” then it better be something that can outshine “it all.” This is why I chose Adventure Time as the best-animated series of the 2010s. Not because it’s a show that practically sparked the existence of almost every show on this list, but because it really is that good of a series. Unfortunately, with a series that really is that good, there will be people who try to pick it apart. This is why I’m going to do my best to defend against some criticism that Adventure Time seems to face. 

The first criticism I want to talk about is one that hasn’t even occurred to me until I watched JelloApocalypse's video called, “So This is Basically Adventure Time.” In that video, I realized that Adventure Time doesn’t really have a proper storytelling structure. Hell, most episodes don’t even have a conclusion. They just stop almost randomly. But there’s a remedy to this problem, and it's one that I discovered somewhat effortlessly during my rewatch of the show. And that solution is to stop looking at Adventure Time as a series of episodes and more of a series of experiences. What do I mean by that? Well, while watching, you can either have a good experience or a bad experience. A fun experience, or a depressing experience. A philosophically brilliant experience or a randomly stupid experience. All of which can happen separately or conjoined in every episode. Personally, I like this style of storytelling because I’m more likely to remember the experience of watching something rather than the basics of what is being viewed. However, as JelloApocalypse has proven, not everyone is going to be ok with this style. This is fine, as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just remember that if it doesn’t work for you, that doesn’t mean it won't work at all. Case in point: there’s a reason that this show got ten seasons.

However, with those ten seasons come the inevitable seasonal rot. Which, in this case, can easily be explained. Halfway through season five of Adventure Time, series creator Pendelton Ward left and made Adam Muto the head showrunner. And where Ward’s style relied on being random and hilarious, Muto took the series in a more philosophical direction. Several fans were turned away from this aspect, but I like to argue that this isn’t seasonal rot and more of a series’ development. Tons of shows on this list went through their own transitions, some subtle and some drastic. Whether or not you’ll be ok with those decisions is entirely dependent on who you are. And personally, I actually enjoyed the direction that Adventure Time took. While I was entertained by how hilarious the original seasons were in Ward’s run, Muto caused me to think more intensely than any other show I have seen in my life. This is why, once again, I would like to point out that just because it didn’t work for you doesn’t mean that it won’t work at all.

But one thing that didn’t work for me, and one criticism that I’m inclined to agree with, were how some characters got treated in later seasons. Now to be fair, most of the characters actually become more interesting as the series goes on (Ice King, Marceline, BMO, Susan Strong, etc.) There are just two characters that got a little iffier compared to others: Finn and Princess Bubblegum. The main reason why Finn’s character seemed to fail is that the writers focused more on Finn's love life (or lack thereof). I genuinely believe that Adventure Time has some fantastic romantic relationships, but that aspect of Finn’s character is easily the most uninteresting. It’s even worse when an episode focuses on his armorous hangups through past...mistakes. I even heard that this decision ruined Finn as a character for some people, which I can totally see why. Luckily the show course-corrected itself, and by season six, it started focussing on an aspect of Finn’s character that is actually interesting: His family. Not to give away any spoilers, but let’s just say that Finn gets significantly more fascinating through this decision. Unfortunately, one decision that never got better was how the show treated the one and only Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum. This character started off as a gentle/playful ruler who was as sweet as her kingdom. Only to evolve into a sociopathic control freak who is obsessed with science. What went wrong is that the show goes so far as to say that she’s always been that way, even since she was a kid. I guess she just was good at hiding it in early seasons. Once again, the writers try their best to course-correct Bubblegum, but all they did was make her bearable than despicable.

But while Bonnie doesn't work for me, do you want to know what does? Literally everything else about this show. One of the reasons why Adventure Time is the best series on this list is because it has elements of every other show that has already been mentioned before it. You see, Adventure Time can have: Hilarious comedy, intense action, superb animation, creative ideas, compelling drama, catchy music, thought-provoking stories, good romantic subplots, gay romantic subplots, great lore and backstory, intriguing mysteries, and, most important of all, bacon pancakes. All of which can be handled in ten to eleven minutes, where most shows struggle within twenty-two.

But one element that stands out among the rest is Adventure Time’s serialized storytelling. You see, there are two different types of storytelling: Plotting and pantsing. Plotting is how it sounds: You come up with ideas beforehand and work your way into making them come to life. Pantsing is where the goal is to basically make things up as you go along and try to make everything connected afterward. The ladder is the route Adventure Time takes. Every single amount of lore, character development, and even surprise twists were thought up almost on the spot. And one might think that this makes things more complicated, but when I rewatched the series in 2019, a solid 99.9% of what’s written lines up. Sure, there are small things that get confusing or downright forgotten. But that’s the keyword: small. It’s the big things that the writers try their best at explaining away, which can be much appreciated. And while I can love a show for creating a well-crafted story, I got to give Adventure Time respect for doing the same thing just by improvising. But do you want to know the real reason why I stuck with this show? And why do all the elements mentioned before manage to work so well? The same reason why any show can work so well: The characters.

And yes, I know I just complained about how certain characters were nearly ruined in this series, but that doesn’t change how good they are. Almost every character that the show focuses on has a level of intrigue to them, and characters that don’t still manage to be incredibly entertaining, to the point where a worm’s butt can carry an episode by itself (Yes. Really). But nothing beats the central duo, and I’m being honest when I say they make the series enjoyable. Finn and Jake not only have such an entertaining brotherly dynamic, but the two of them are just so much fun that I can’t help but smile whenever they’re on screen. They’re easily the best thing about the show, as well as the most entertaining characters in it. This is saying something because Adventure Time has a LOT of characters. One might say too many. In fact, one could argue that Adventure Time suffers from the too-many-characters syndrome, which I can absolutely see. However, every character is so unique and creative that to this day, I still remember the Tree Witch in the episode “To Cut a Woman’s Hair.” From her voice to her design to even Tree Witch's creative and hilarious way to convince Finn to get her some princess's hair.

This brings me to another great thing about the show: Its endless amount of creativity. Everything that Adventure Time does is something you will never see anywhere else. From all the unique ways the show has Jake use his stretchy powers, to also having a vampire drink the color red instead of blood, Adventure Time is always a show that leaves me scratching my head wondering, “Why hasn’t someone else done this before?” And the best part is, no other show can do the ideas that Adventure Time has had. Because there is no way of doing it without coming across as a carbon copy. Which I can appreciate. Believe it or not, I would rather see an idea done once and never again, rather than repeated to the point where it becomes stale. Letting Adventure Time keep its creativity helps the show stand out among the rest and prevents it from being forgotten through time.

Thus, we come to the real reason why Adventure Time is the best-animated series on this list: Memorability. When doing a rewatch of the series, I was surprised by how many episodes I somehow remember. In fact, out of over two hundred episodes, I only manage to forget one (which coincidentally managed to be an episode I hate). I honestly don’t know why so many episodes managed to stick with me. Maybe because the show is so creative that it’s hard to forget. It's probably because the characters are instant icons that their impact just won’t leave me. Hell, perhaps it’s because the show is so gosh dang weird that my brain refuses to forget a second of it. No matter what the reason is, it all still stuck. And I’m not going to lie, I feel as though there are going to be a lot of shows I'll forget over the years. But ten years from now, something tells me I’m never going to forget Adventure Time.

Now that I think about it, there really have been many great cartoons over the previous decade. And we owe it all to Adventure Time. The act of being unique and creative with one’s ideas came from Adventure Time. The idea of being more mature and deciding what should and shouldn’t be for kids came from Adventure Time. The fact that a show needs well-written characters to tell a great story came from Adventure Time. Even certain shows were made because creators worked on Adventure Time (looking at you, Steven Universe). Is the show perfect? No. Far from it, even. But when looking back at the many great series we’ve gotten in the 2010s and the many great shows we’ll get in years to come, I realize that the fun will never end WITH Adventure Time.

(Especially since we’re still getting it with four hour long specials on HBOmax)

Before Adventure Time ends, I decided to remaster this post that I made two years ago by organizing it and adding in more examples of how the comics support this ship. The comics really made the relationship between Marceline and Princess Bubblegum than friendship, making it impossible to call them “close friends”. They even made them into a married couple like can it be more obvious? Anyways, the comics did a great job with their relationship and I hope the show do so as well before it ends.

Homecoming

“C’mon dude, if anyone can ask her out, it’s you.” Keila said, patting Marceline’s back.

Marceline buried her face into her hands, shrinking into herself as she groaned. “What if she says no? What if she’s not even gay?”

“She has rainbow pins on her bag and Bongo told me she used to date some senior girl named Shoko. She’s definitely gay.” Keila said, rolling her eyes. “We went over this already.”

“I know.” Marceline said as she tried to calm her breathing, Keila was right, all signs pointed to Bonnibel being gay. If she turned her down it would be for some other reason. “What if she doesn't like me like that?”

“The guys and I are pretty sure she does. She’s always letting you copy off her work in chemistry and her face turns as pink as her hair whenever you talk to her.” Keila pointed out as she stood off the tiled floors that covered their school’s hallways, pulling Marceline up with her. “Now go be the cool punk-rock gall I know and love and ask her out.” She said as she turned Marceline towards the end off the hall where Bonnibel was standing at her locker. “She’s all alone, this is the perfect time.”

“Will I still be the the cool punk-rock gal you know and love if she rejects me?”

“Yup, just slightly sadder.”

Marceline let out a small whimper, not at all comforted by her best friend’s words. Nevertheless, she squared her shoulders and put on a slightly more pleasant version of her usual resting bitch-face. She had practiced this moment in her head dozens of times, the outcomes ranging from absolutely perfect to horribly devastating. She hoped for something at least in the middle. Bonnie was alone now, good. The situations where she was with people usually had bad outcomes.

She started to panic as she reached Bonnibel, her hands were clammy and her heart was racing. She willed herself to let out a normal greeting. “Hey Bonnie.”

Bonnibel looked up from her phone, her expression growing visibly happier when she realized who had spoken. “Hi Marcy.”

Marceline felt her heart melt at the sound of Bonnibel calling her ‘Marcy’. She tried to contain herself, turning into a puddle at her crush’s feet would be awful for her reputation. “Are you going to the dance on Friday?”

Bonnibel looked up at her with her big blue eyes. “Yeah, are you?”

Marceline rubbed the back of her neck, trying not to get lost in her eyes. “Well I was wondering if you might want to be my date.” She said as quick as possible.

She waited silently for Bonnibel’s answer. When it didn’t come she looked from her feet, where she had been staring to avoid eye contact, to Bonnibel, whose face was as pink as her hair, like Keila said, and she had the biggest, cutest grin on her face.

“Of course I will, I was actually really hoping you would ask because I didn’t know if you like girls and I was to scared to find out.” She ranted, before she could say anything else the bell for first period rang and she grabbed her books out of her locker. “Um, I’ll see you later and we’ll talk about the details, bye.” She waved as she ran down the hall, not wanting to be late.

Marceline leaned against the pale blue lockers before sliding down them to the floor. She wrapped her arms around her legs and tucked her knees close to her chest before burying her face into them to hide how red it was. She didn’t even notice when Keila sat down next to her. “I’m assuming that it went well.”

“Even better.” Marceline replied without lifting her head.

Friday night Marceline was sitting in her car, desperately trying to fix her bowtie. “Why can’t I get the hang of this?” She huffed out in disappointment when it refused to match the bowtie from the tutoriel on her phone.

“Marceline, just let me do it.” Guy insisted from his seat in the back of the car.

“Ugh, fine.” She turned to face him so he could fix the bowtie. “I just wanted to be able to do it on my own.”

“We know,” Said Keila, from her seat next to Guy. “but would you rather have an ugly bowtie that you did yourself or an amazing bowtie that Guy did for you?”

“An amazing bowtie.” Marceline mumbled as Guy sat back in his seat, satisfied with his work.

“Relax dude, you’re going to have an amazing night and you’re going to look beautiful throughout it.” He reassured her. “You’ve got a hot date-ow, Keila.” He whined when she dug her elbow into his side. “I’m just acknowledging her beauty, I’m not gonna make a move or anything.”

“I know, just doing my job as jealous girlfriend.” Keila smirked. “Now go knock on Bonnibel’s door, she’s probably wondering why we’ve been parked outside her house for the past ten minutes without getting out.”

Guy was right, Marceline needed to stop stalling, Bonnie liked her too, that was a fact, she looked great in her tuxedo, and she had managed to tame her long hair enough to look like she put some effort into it, but not too much effort. She looked like a badass.

She got out of the car and swept her hands over her tux in an attempt to get out any wrinkles that might have appeared from sitting in the car. She walked up the the surprisingly long stone path to Bonnie’s door, using the extra time to regain her composure. When she reached the door she knocked twice and waited for an answer.

“You must be Marceline.” Instead of Bonnie, a man with red hair, dressed in a simple black suit had answered the door. “You can wait inside, Bonnibel will be down in a moment.” He stepped aside, leaving enough space for Marceline to walk through the door.

“Um, yeah, that’s me.” She said awkwardly as she stepped into the foyer, sitting in a small armchair that he directed her to.

“I’ll go tell her that you’re here.” He said before heading up a nearby set of stairs.

Marceline waited in the foyer, suddenly feeling way too underdressed, even in her tuxedo. The house wasn’t very big but it was decorated as if it was owned by millionaires. She could feel herself start to panic, what if Bonnie did come from a rich family. Her dad made a lot of money but she lived with her foster parents, what if they disapproved of her.

“Hi Marcy.”

Marceline quickly stood from the armchair and looked up to see Bonnie walking down the steps in a pale pink a-line dress. “Wow, you look beautiful.” Marceline said as she reached the bottom of the stairs.

Bonnie tucked a strand of her hot-pink hair behind her ear. “Thanks, you do too. You said you were wearing a tux so I got you this.” She handed her a small black box.

Marceline carefully took the box from her and opened it to find a lapel pin with a small pink gem. “Oh it’s beautiful, Bonnie. You really didn’t have too.”

Bonnie giggled. “No I wanted too. I know pink isn’t your favorite color but I thought we could coordinate a bit. Here, let me put it on.” Bonnie took the box back and took out the pin and Marceline felt her cheeks warm up as Bonnie pinned it to her lapel, smiling to herself when she was done. “There, I knew it would suit you.”

“I love it.” Marceline said and in a small bout of confidence she took Bonnie’s hand. “We should probably get going, Keila and Guy are waiting in the car.”

They walked hand in hand through the door and down the long path. Marceline saw Keila smiling at them through the window of the car and Marceline’s smile grew bigger. She was going to homecoming with the girl she had a crush on all year. It almost didn’t seem real to her.

They reached the car and Marceline opened the passenger side door for Bonnie, when she had climbed in and straightened her dress out so it wouldn’t wrinkle, Marceline closed the door and climbed into her own seat.

“Everyone’s all set?” She checked as she started the car. A small chorus of assurances let her know that they were. “All right, then. Let’s go.”

“There’s a space!” Keila yelled as she pointed to an empty parking space in the back of the lot.

“Thanks Keila, try not to yell next time though.” Marceline said as she pulled into the space. Some asshole had taken her usual spot, even though they were assigned to specific students, and the parking lot was nearly packed with cars.

“Sorry but I want to get out, my leg fell asleep like, five minutes ago.” Keila whined as she opened her door.

“I offered to drop all of you off by the door but you said no.” Marceline reminded her. “You okay, Bonnie? Your wearing heels and we parked a bit far from the door.”

“I’m fine, walking in heels is one of my talents. I’ve been wearing them for events since middle school.”

“When Marceline was in middle school she refused to wear any shoes that weren’t combat boots, even in the summer.” Keila laughed as she teased Marceline.

Marceline knew what she was doing. Being friends with Keila was like having an annoying older sister, she loved to embarrass Marceline in front of her crushes. “You’re just proving that I was awesome, even in middle school.”

Bonnie laughed. “C’mon, no one is cool in middle school, we were all nerds. The only reason I wore heels was because my parents would drag me along to banquets and parties.”

“What are your parents jobs?” Guy asked.

“They’re both doctors. I want to follow in their footsteps.” She told them.

“Wow, that’s cool.” Marceline said as she opened the door to the school, leading them to the cafeteria where the dance was being held. The sound of bubbly pop music drifted through the halls, causing Keila to complain about the music choices.

“I like the music,” Bonnie said. “I like to listen to it when I study.”

“It’s fun to dance to if I’m in the right mood, I prefer rock.” Marceline said.

“We’ll leave you two alone to bond over your crappy music taste.” Keila said jokingly as they reached the cafeteria. She grabbed Guy’s arm. “C’mon Guy, let’s go find the snack table.”

As Keila pulled Guy away, Marceline chuckled. “She doesn't hate pop music as much as she says, I’ve seen her dance to it dozens of times at parties.” She told Bonnie.

“Well, do you want to dance to the crappy music with me?” Bonnie laughed as she held her hand out towards Marceline.

“I would love to.” She took Bonnie’s hand and pulled her to the middle of the room, it was filled with dancing teens and they had to push past a few people to get past the outskirts of the the group.

They danced to the music, Marceline was used to making up moves as she went along, playing shows with the rest of her band, The Scream Queens, had given her practice. Bonnie was more graceful than her, keeping time with the music, her dress billowing out when she twirled. They kept going for a few more songs, finally stopping when they had both tired out.

“Do you wanna go to the snack table?” Marceline asked over the music when they had finally pushed their way out of the group.

Bonnie nodded and they headed towards the table. Keila and Guy weren’t there anymore so they must have been dancing. Bonnie grabbed two water bottles off the the table and handed one to Marceline.

“So, earlier you said you wanted to follow in your parents footsteps?” Marceline asked as they leaned against the wall and sipped their water.

“Yeah, I want to be a surgeon. I’m taking as many sciences classes as I can next year. I already have all my english and social studies credits so I don’t need to take either senior year.”

“That’s amazing. If it wasn’t for you I’d probably be failing chemistry.” Marceline admitted. “I prefer music classes. I want to be in a professional orchestra.”

“That’s actually the only class I’ve ever gotten a bad grade in, I just can’t make sense of the music notes and beats.”

“Different talents.” Marceline shrugged. Before they could continue their conversation the pop music switched to a slow song. Marceline took Bonnie’s hand and pulled her back towards the middle of the room.

They both smiled at each other. “Do you know how to slow dance?” Bonnie asked.

“I have a basic idea.”

Bonnie put her right hand on Marceline’s waist and held Marceline’s right hand with her left. “Then I’ll lead.”

Marceline did her best to follow Bonnie’s steps, she tried to ignore Bonnie’s hand on her waist. She instead focused on the determined expression Bonnie wore as they danced, it reminded her of Bonnie’s expression whenever they took a test in chemistry, but slightly more relaxed. It was adorable.

At one point Marceline tried to rest her head on Bonnie’s shoulder, it didn’t work considering Bonnie was shorter than her, even with heels. The attempt did get Bonnie to laugh, so it was worth it.

The danced until the end of the song, leaving the group again once it was over.

“Stay here.” Marceline told Bonnie before running back to the the snack table. She took a small paper plate and put two cupcakes and a handful of cookies on it before heading back to her. “On our way in here I saw that the doors to the courtyard were open, we can go out there and eat these.” She explained.

Bonnie linked her left arm with Marceline’s right. “Let’s go then.”

They walked arm in arm out of the cafeteria and through the abandoned hallways. There were a couple of teens sitting in the halls, they most likely left to get away from the booming music, and a few teachers patrolling the halls. The doors to the courtyard were propped open with a couple of old bricks, letting in the cool air of the October night.

Bonnie shivered as they stepped through the doors. “Are you too cold?” Marceline asked her. “We could go back inside if you are.”

She shook her head. “No, I’m fine. I’d rather stay out here. Let’s sit at that table.” Bonnie reassured her before pointing to a metal picnic table. Instead of sitting on the bench, the two girls sat on the table with the plate of treats in between them, using the bench as a footrest.

Bonnie reached for a cupcake while Marceline reached for one of the chocolate chip cookies. She couldn’t help but laugh when Bonnie got a glob of red icing on her nose. “Well that wasn’t very graceful, Princess.” She teased as Bonnie did her best to clean it off.

“If I’m a princess then you must be the queen that’s been given my hand in marriage.” Bonnie stated.

“What does that even mean? Was that a marriage proposal?”

“Don’t be silly, Marceline, this is only our first date.”

“Okay then, tell me about yourself. Isn’t that what people do on first dates?” Marceline said as she laid down on the table, giving herself a full view of the starry sky.

Bonnie followed her lead, lying down next to her. “What do you want to know about me?”

“I don’t know, um, tell me something I would never guess about you.”

Bonnie stayed quiet for a moment before answering Marceline’s request. “One time I punched my uncle.”

“Um, why?” Marceline laughed at the thought of Bonnie punching a grown man.

“Because he’s an asshole.” Bonnie said soberly. “Stop laughing you dork, I’m, serious. After I came out as gay he tried to set me up with the son of his coworker.”

“Wow, that is a very assholeish thing to do.” Marceline agreed.

“Nah, it’s okay, you can laugh at it. It took two weeks for his black eye to completely heal.” Bonnie recalled, now laughing too. “The look on his face when he saw my fist heading towards his face was priceless.”

“Oh my god, I can’t stop imagining you punching some middle-aged guy.” Marceline said when their laughter had reduced to wide grins. “You’re so tiny, how are you even that strong? You have noodle arms.”

“Hey, this noodle-armed girl took kickboxing lessons for three years.” Bonnie countered. “I know how to take care of myself. Now it’s your turn to tell me something.”

“Okay, when I was in elementary school I refused to eat any food that wasn’t the color red.” Marceline told her.

“Why?” Bonnie asked. “How did you get all your vitamins and stuff, surely an all red diet wouldn’t be very nutritionally balanced.”

“I thought I was a vampire and that I could eat red instead of blood.” Marceline said, chuckling at her younger self. “As for nutrition, my mother had to get creative. She put red food dye in a lot of my food.”

“Your mom sounds nice.” Bonnie said.

“Yeah, she was the best.” Marceline sighed, she felt no reason to mention that her mother had died when she was ten. At least, not yet, that’d be a depressing topic. Deciding to change the subject, Marceline brought up a different subject that she knew would keep the conversation going. “How’s your cat?”

“Goliad’s been doing well. Now that Finn has adopted Stormo, she’s been keeping me up all night trying to play. She used to get rid of that energy during the daytime with her brother but now it’s up to me.” Bonnie rambled. “What about Schwabl?”

“He’s good, same as always. How’s Finn doing with Stormo?” Marceline asked. “Jake doesn’t exactly like cats.”

“Jake’s still trying to deal with it. Plus Stormo’s always been an adventurous cat, he let’s Finn put him on a leash and take him on walks.” They both laughed at the thought of FInn walking with a cat on a leesh. “Are you and your band playing any shows anytime soon?”

“Yeah, next week we’re playing at this club called The Nightosphere. I can get you a ticket if you want to come.” Marceline told her. “Our music isn’t exactly pop, but-” She stopped when Bonnie interrupted her.

“I would love to come, no matter what genre you play.” She said sweetly, rolling on her side so she could face Marceline.

Marceline followed, rolling on her side. “Then on monday I’ll bring you a ticket.”

“There you two lovebirds are.” Keila exclaimed as she dragged Guy into the courtyard behind her, causing the two girls to bolt up. “I didn’t see you in the cafeteria and needed to make sure you weren’t making out in some bathroom.”

“Keila!” Marceline shouted, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink.

“Don’t be distasteful, Keila.” Bonnie said as she shifted a bit farther from Marceline, her cheeks a much darker shade of red.

“Relax you two, I’m just kidding. No need to be embarrassed.” Keila laughed as she reached their table. “Ooh, hand me one of those cookies, Marshmallow.”

“C’mon, you know I hate that nickname.” Marceline said as she handed her a cookie. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Bonnie quietly laughing at the use of the nickname.

“I know,” Keila said as she took a bite of the cookie. “that’s why I love to use it.”

“Take a break from embarrassing Marshmallow in front of her crush, Keila.” Guy said, laughing too when he saw Marceline’s expression.

“If you’re going to tell her not to embarrass me then you shouldn’t either.” Marceline said, crossing her arms. “You guy are jerks.”

“But we’re your jerks, you love us” Keila insisted.

“Yeah, whatever.” Marceline pouted. She looked over to Bonnie when she noticed her shivering. “Are you cold?”

“Just a little.” Bonnie said as she rubbed her hands on her bare arms in an attempt to warm the up.

“Here,” Marcelin began shrugging off her jacket. “take my jacket, I’m wearing a long-sleeved shirt so I’ll be fine without it.” She said as she draped it over Bonnie’s shoulders. Proud of herself when she saw how cute Bonnie looked in the oversized jacket.

“Thanks, Marcy.” She said as she pulled her arms through the sleeves and buttoned it. “Are you sure you’ll be fine without it?”

“Yeah,” Marceline said confidently, swinging her legs under the table. “I still look great, even without it.”

“Okay, come on you two lovebirds. Stop flirting for a second.” Keila teased. “The party’s been dieing down for the last twenty minutes and they’ve run out of soda. Wanna bounce and go to Mcdonalds or something?” She said. Guy nodded in agreement.

“I’m cool with that.” Bonnie said as she hopped off the table.

Marceline hooked her thumbs through her suspenders as she got off the table. “Kay, let’s go. Guy, want the rest of the cookies?”

“You know it.” He said as he took the plate from the table.

“Hey, have either of you seen Bongo?” Marceline asked as they left the school. “He said he was coming tonight but I never saw him.”

“He came with some girl, but they left a while ago to see a movie.” Guy told them.

“Oh well.” Marceline sighed as they reached her car. “I was gonna invite him so we could go to his place and play some music.” She unlocked the doors so they could all get in the car. “I wanted to show off a bit for Bonnie.”She said as nonchalantly as she could while she turned the key and started the car. She smiled to herself from pride when she saw Bonnie’s own small smile.

“Thanks Marceline, I had a really fun time.” Bonnie said as the two girls got out of the car and started the walk to her front door.

“I did too. I’m so happy you said yes when I asked you to be my date.” Marceline replied, taking Bonnie’s left hand in her right.

Bonnie squeezed her hand as they reached the door and turned so they could face each other. She put her other hand on Marceline's shoulder, stood on her tiptoes and gave her a quick peck on the lips before letting go of her hand and turning to unlock the door. “I’ll see you on Monday.” She said before going inside and leaving Marceline standing on her porch with a dumbstruck expression on her face, so happily lovesick that she barely even registered the whoops and hollers cheering her on coming from Keila and Guy who witnessed the kiss from her car.

Marceline & Bubblegum Kiss

This post is about the series final, a long-awaited and desperately hoped for scene from many fans! It took 10 seasons of Adventure Time for this scene to finally occur. This was celebrated by many of the show’s viewers! Especially the LGBTQ+ fans! This scene is as iconic as it is queer! It was greatly appreciated from the fans.

Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship was never perceived as a friendship. The show continuously implied that there was always a romantic relationship as it was hinted off several times in past episodes. In one of the first episodes of Adventure Time, when Jake wanted to ask Bubblegum out on a date, he initially asked Marceline for advice on the date. And as soon as they see each other, they greet, and Marceline calls her by her first name “Bonnibel”, and as the show progresses we then realize that Marceline is one of the very few people who can call her by her first name.

Then Marceline sang “I'm Just Your Problem” that unleashed many fan ships. This scene even gave Marceline and Bubblegum their very own queer ship name, “Bubbline”, which is Bubblegum and Marceline combined. (from Culture website)

There was another episode that greatly implied that their relationship was a lot more than a platonic friendship between Marceline and Bubblegum. In the episode “Broke His Crown”, throughout the episode it is truly and purposely implied that they are on a date. As they are both dressed up, and they even hold hands in some scenes. ( shared in website “them.”) Bubblegum and Marceline could not have been just friends through all of this. It was greatly speculated that the writers of the show were leading up to something everyone had been longing for many episodes of the famous cartoon.

When the finale episode launched, fans finally got what they dreamed of for years! Marceline and Bubblegum kissed! The cartoon’s fans were over the moon about this. A fan soon tweeted “Straights have “to all the boys i’ve loved before”, gays have “Love, Simon” and now lesbians have Princess Bubblegum and Marceline kissing.” ( tweeted by fan @whoislales). The excitement and appreciation from the famous American Cartoon Adventure Time was shown all over social media.

Personally, as an LGBTQ member, I found this episode stunning. I thought the same thing as many other viewers, “we finally got the episode we longed for so long.” It was beautifully written and a perfected queer love story. The creator of the cartoon (shared in an interview with writers) shared that Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe) was given the assignment to continue with vampire queen Marceline and Bubblegum’s love story. She shared that their relationship was not originally planned as part of the show, but that it had “evolved” throughout the show. Giving the perfect suspense and curiosity towards the audience.

Adam Muto said that the kiss was the perfect ending for Marceline and Bubblegum, “There’s enough to draw a conclusion. I don’t want to lay out their entire future” (said during an interview in 2018.)

Overall, their story was epic and allowed people to see in an American Cartoon the love story of two women.
