hello to the bridgerton fandom: here is my thoughts about what happened.

first, i am a bridgerton fan since 2015/16 when i read the books, i was active on facebook and twitter about it back then, so i am not even a little surprised how much hate we saw in the last hours.

i remember VERY clearly how much racism there was involving casting people of color back when the cast was announced. i stopped being active on the fandom, i left the facebook groups, i stopped following pages, all because i hated seeing so much hate and racism. i remember how much hate regé had to endure “because simon wasn’t black”. honestly, i remember being confused about how they would handle casting poc in a history drama like bridgerton, but i LOVED the ideia of embracing history inaccuracy like they did it with the tv show. we need more of that on media.

but back on regeé, he had to suffer with “not looking like simon” and then being absurdly sexualized int he show. AND before anyone says “oh it’s an explicit show everyone was sexualized”:

1 - rewatch simon’s scene and compare them with others characters

2 - read the comments and the way people (specifically white woman) said about him

3 - also, read an article about the sexualization of the black body by white people

so, no i don’t believe that regé left the show because “he wanted to try other things”. this fandom it’s so so disgusting and has been for a long time.

when i met john, i saw a lot of people saying he was ugly. he’s a handsome man.

people loved the idea of lesbian!eloise, but it had to be with a white woman. the moment michaela appeared on the scene most of you didn’t hate her because she wasn’t michael, most of you hated because she was a BLACK WOMAN and that made frannie bisexual. probably if michaela was white the amount of hate would be less then we have right now.

listen, i am a fan of the book and frannie’s it’s one of my favorites loosing only for eloise’s and daphne’s. i was SAD that i wouldn’t had michael on the screen, but i also like the idea of michaela. i know sometimes they have to change things on adaptations, and when they change it to people of color or make someone queer?? i love it even more. “oh but don’t change a character for it, create another one, i want this one”. he have millions of straight histories out there, let’s tell queer stories in shows with audiences like bridgerton. let’s make a history drama not be about two queer people that suffered and died without being able to show their love. let’s make this because it’s necessary and beautiful.

and its okay to be sad about “losing” michael, but ask yourself: why am i truly sad about it? at what point this sadness it’s becoming hate?

now, about the fact that “this changes frannie storie and i don’t like it”. it only changes a little bit and honestly they have a possibility of changing for even better.

i personally didn’t like francesca’s reaction when she met michaela. one very important thing about her history and biggest one it’s that she wasn’t attracted or in love with michael when she was with john, she learned it was okay to want and love michael after johns death and THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL. i really hope they don’t go towards a infidelity plot (cheating it’s not just kissing or sex, it can be a lot of things) john was her first love, she loved two people, but she loved and was happy with john. now, if that was just a bi panic moment? don’t care about this, fine, it’s okay and understandable. i just don’t want her having sex dreams about michaela while with john. please don’t do this.

that being said.

the whole “infertility plot” can be EVEN more powerful on her season. why? she would loose john’s baby. she wants to be a mother. if she stays with michaela? she won’t have a baby. later she can realize that she can adopt and there’s more than one way of being a mother, but that would be something to work towards it. she would have to abandon her dream (again, later realize she can still have it) in name of being in love and happy again. THAT IS SO POWERFUL.

the queen probably will give some permission to michaela be the earl, michaela could fight for the titles go to woman’s too. again, it’s not a historical accurate show.

in queen charlotte’s story the society had to deal with poc be included in society, in frannie story they’d have to heal with queer people be included on it.

frannie story can be so more powerful and beautiful and important.

yes bridgerton it’s a not perfect show, it’s not a 100% good adaptation, but it can be a powerful show. having poc and queer representation on it would be so more important than having your little story book become real on tv.

i don’t think that they’ll change eloise’s story specifically because we already met her *male* love interest, maybe she can have a fling with a woman next season, but honestly she needs to grow up before her season.

i don’t honestly know about benedict’s season. i don’t think they’ll genderbent sophie, but if they did it i would like it too. i honestly think they only made him bisexual (and frannie too) because they saw it the fans liked the idea.

BUT i think they can change hyacinth’s and gregory’s histories too. AND i would love to see it two. imagine hyacinth doing crime with a woman, IMAGINE gregory STEALING the GROOM from the altar (said groom having to be force to marry a woman despite being gay). i would love to see it.

honestly, i stoped hoping for book accuracy since anthony’s season and as much i didnt love it at the beginning, i learned to love it with time as a different and separate thing from the books.

you can be sad. just don’t spread hate. don’t be a racist. don’t be biphobic and/or queerphobic.

it’s so beautiful to have something like this happening in pride month don’t ruin another thing.

and if you want to “stop the show, it’s ruined for me” go ahead and do it. honestly? it won’t change a thing, people will still watch and it will still happen. queer people will continue to fight and love, and queer histories will continue to be told.

Here's the theater au that some of you wanted to see:

Ok so Lance joins this play to get closer to his crush, Allura. She's really pretty and auditioning for the princess in this play that was written by a group of students and approved by Adam (the theater club director). Obviously, he's going to try out for the prince/fiance character. Plus, her character kisses him.

And, they both get the parts! Hurray! Maybe they can have a romantic date where they rehearse their lines!

One problem. This group of students was the GSA and they refuse to write a straight Romeo and Juliet rip off. So, the princess has a lesbian lover, the court jester (played by the lovely Romelle). And also, Allura has a major crush on Romelle (it's reciprocated). And plus, the prince ends up developing a crush on a knight in training (reluctantly played by Keith).

Ok now basic explanation of the play:

Princess Rebecca is to meet her fiance, Prince Isaac. He travels with his favorite knight, Elijah, to Rebecca's kingdom. Issac seems smitten by Rebecca once he meets her.

She then realizes that she can't bear marrying Isaac and runs away with with her court jester, Lydia. But, just before leaving in the middle of the night, she plants a kiss on Isaac's sleeping forehead. (She also has a kiss scene with Lydia while running away).

Elijah comforts Isaac about having his fiance leave him in the dead of night and it turns into a star gazing session. The play ends with them kissing as the sun rises. (The running away happens on the same night as the stargazing.)

Of course, throughout the play, Rebecca and Lydia very obviously flirt and have some scenes where they talk about wanting to run away together. Ya know, girl stuff. Then, Isaac's character has this whole thing where it gets increasingly obvious that he's convinced himself that he's in love with Rebecca so he doesn't have to confront his feelings for Elijah.

Now sadly, Lance cannot read the very obvious homosexual undertones or the second half of the script for that matter because he didn't know that Rebecca and Isaac don't end up marrying. He read the lines that he needed to for the audition. He swore he would read the rest before the audition but he kept getting distracted.

Now Keith's pov. Keith is a costume designer for the theater club and does some technical stuff behind the scenes with Pidge and Hunk too. He was helping out by reading some of Elijah's lines and accidentally got casted as Elijah. Since he's not too big of a part and only really talks in the last part, he decided that it wouldn't be *too* bad.

So now Lance and Keith are stuck playing forbidden gay lovers in their school play. Hopefully they don't fall in love.. (The plot of the play mirrors the what happens in the au)

Some currently irrelevant details:

Coran is Allura's legal guardian and the art teacher so he volunteers help with the set and costume making

Keith still works on costume designs and stuff while playing Elijah

Keith was friends with Allura, Romelle, and Pidge before

There's a different spotlight on Lance and Allura when their gay lovers are on stage so they look more vibrant

There's a betting pool going around for when Lance is going to ask Keith to practice their kiss scene

Matt is also there but he's a senior and is working the lights (and teasing Keith)

Everyone but Pidge and Matt are sophomores

Pidge is a freshman but skipped a year so she's 13 and not 14

Keith is still working on Costumes while being in the play

Adam "begged" Keith to play Elijah (Keith didn't have a choice)

Also, there's a scene where Elijah says "Oh don't cry, my prince, for I cannot bear to see such a beautiful face full of sorrow." And when Keith first rehearsed that line with Lance, he very visibly malfunctioned. He had the biggest bi panic moment.

I could not get myself to the gym yesterday because it was bike sprints and then a partner workout, and honestly if my mom's not there (and she's sick this week) I don't really enjoy partner workouts. There is just, this terrible fear in me that someone will get paired with me and they'll think "ah... heck, her. (negative.)" Even though I'm friends with everyone there... Because I've been going for years and I technically am very strong I get paired with other "advanced" athletes, but I have itty bitty lunglettes and I'm actually not fast so being paired with other people stresses me out because I hate the idea that I'm slowing them down, but I also really can't push it because it will give me an asthma attack at best and a panic attack at worst. :')

SO. I just went home and lifted weights a little. Not a ton, but I didn't just lay on my couch. I know I keep saying it, but I really want to get Strong Strong this year. So I just have to keep trucking along. So. Lifted. Which is something. Because all I really want to do right now is smoke because I'm Stressed. And yes now weed will kill me, but also??? Before it does??? Zero thoughts in my head???

I ended up reading as well which is good. I'm reading these Tita Rosie's Kitchen cozy mysteries, and I thought I knew who the killer was in this one, but now it feels like TOO much focus is being placed on them, so I'm wondering if they're a red herring... But I'm REALLY liking this series in a lot of surprising ways. Lila Macapagal's whole family is from the Philippines so all of the books are full of words and foods I don't know. There's even a glossary. :] Her best friend and business partner is a lesbian with a steady girlfriends and they're actual main characters. Last book had casual ace rep, which I was so pleased with??? And this book had a casual polycule speculation about some suspects. And it's not like these identities are called out or discussed at length... I don't know how the author identifies, but it feels very natural, like it is written by someone who is actually in those spaces. No one questions the ace character. There isn't a negative connotation on the polycule speculation. Which is just... Idk. If you know the cozy mystery genre it is so white and straight. I love the genre, I really do, it's one of my favorites, the settings, the low stakes with a still compelling plot, but even as other genres have become more inclusive, this one has seemed to lag behind with the times... it has been majorly flawed. That's why I started writing my own before I fully burnt out... And I'd like to do it myself... But it's just. Nice to see.

WARNING: LONG RANT AND EXPLANATION

I feel like I have to stand up for myself now when I’ve seen the way some of the people in this fandom have been spreading rumors about me on Twitter.

I’m going to take this from the beginning.

In November, I was kinda new on Twitter. I remember seeing a tweet in my feed, it said “Let Robin say lesbian in season 5” and to me, who lives in Sweden, the word lesbian isn’t a very “bad” word. It’s actually a very common and normal word here, and we have a bunch of movies and tv-shows when lesbian girls and women simply say: I’m lesbian! So to me, I had NO IDEA that in the US, it’s seen as a “bad” word and that’s why the fans wanted her to verbally say it. I totally get that now, but I wasn’t aware back then. Silly me then made a comment, because a very cute and funny little moment popped up in my head and I felt like: AH I need to write this. It was something along with:

“Or gay, because imagine how cute it would be if Will came out as gay, and Robin would say “I’m gay too”, and then a stunned Dustin (or someone) would say “Okay, so while we’re at it - does anyone else want to come out of the closet?” And then Mike slowly raises his hand.”

I didn’t think much more about it, and the next time I logged into Twitter I had gotten like 50 qrts with: LOADS of death threats, gifs with people murdering people, people calling me lesbophobe, people mocking my grammar, my age, people saying weird things to me about Will etc. I was in such shock, I deleted the tweet right away and had a panic attack. What the hell just happened? How did that made me a lesbophobe? I’m bisexual myself, and I LOVE lesbians. I have also a bunch of wlw ships that I love. But all that shit just because I didn’t know that the word lesbian was very uncommon for americans to say in American media and how they wanted to change that.

Anyways, I deactivated my Twitter because all these horrible rumors about me triggered my suicidal thoughts (I suffer from depression), I made a new one and people figured me out right away so I changed alias and pfp/header but people still figured out it was me.

I blocked every single toxic person I came across, a few months passed and one day I was on Twitter again. This time, it was about an analysis of a scene in Stranger Things. Me and an iconic Byler here on tumblr were analysing the scene when everyone says goodbye at the end of season 3. First, Mike looked uncomfortable af when El kissed him, and later on he looked uncomfortable when she was close to him, hugging and touching and making a forehead touch. In one of the gifs, to ME it looked like the hand movement from El was kinda harsh when they made that forehead touch and I just couldn’t understand how people thought it was cute. It was a personal opinion and just a harmless analysis. Both me and this other person were also saying “Nothing against El though, she’s a kid, but I guess if the roles were reversed - if Mike would be the one to kiss El with her not kissing back, with open eyes, looking uncomfortable and shocked, I guess people would have accused him for SA or something. Not that we did, but we know that it would look a lot more bad if Mike was the one who kissed her and not vice versa simply because of the statistics. WE NEVER ACCUSED EL FOR SA. We both love her and she’s my favorite female character in the show. I just don’t like the SHIP Mlvn and I didn’t get how people thought that scene was cute. It was simply an analysis, nothing more. Not an accusation. Not a hate post. That post had over 200 likes and LOADS of reblogs with people who thought the same. But still only me and my friend were attacked. That also lead to ANOTHER accusation: of me being antisemitic. Why?

In year 2006, I first started my YouTube channel. I was very interested in learning how to edit, so thanks to tutorials I learned by myself how to edit. I was 14 years old when I read Anne Frank’s diary for the first time and I saw so much of myself in her. I also loved the way she described her relationship with Peter in the diary, so I watched “Anne Frank: The Whole Story” from 2001 and thanks to my family I could get that movie on my computer so I could make tribute videos of her since she inspired me so much, to never give up on my dreams and to ALWAYS follow my heart and believe that every person is truly good at heart. I made my own trailer for the movie, because there was none to be found on YouTube. My edits became very popular for being back in 2007, and soon loads of people found them. 90% was so happy I made these tributes, that I let the memory of her and all the people who tragically was murdered by the nazi’s back in the 30/40’s live on. But there was also a bunch of REAL antisemitics who called Anne a bunch of horrible stuff in the comments, people who claimed the holocaust never happened etc and I was defending her and the other victims for dear life. I was so proud of my edits, like I said: I was 14 years old and she was my biggest inspiration. My parents also watched these and they didn’t think they were problematic in any way so of course I trusted them and their moral.

And yes, I also made two tribute edits of her and Peter (I didn’t even knew about the term “shipping” back then) but this person on Twitter said I was making “ship edits” about Anne Frank. I have made all of my old videos private now, mostly because of the bad quality but also because of this person who now made me embarrassed of them instead. I wouldn’t make these edits today. Anyways, because of this person + a lot of others, this made me and my friend to eventually deactivate our tumblr accounts. I hade SO much going on in my personal life back then too, so this was just too much. They found out things about my family situation and that made me freak out, I was threatening them with the cops just because they were attacking and stalking me and my family on a personal level. They were harassing me on TikTok. On DM. On Twitter. People were leaving me and I felt like shit. Luckily there was a bunch who still were standing by my side through all of this and I am SO grateful for you all. Never forget that, you guys made me come back here.

Also, now when one of my tweets became popular on Twitter, of COURSE these people found me and started spreading these rumors again. I found that out from some of my friends here, sending me ss.

I just can’t fucking believe these people. All because of a silly little tweet which ended up in a total DISASTER.

Sayori is an incredibly skilled craftswoman, being able to understand and replicate things just by reading about them. She often puts her own spin on it whenever she does it.

Sayori has a Light/Dark Gaia crystal always on her. She can use it at night after enough power is stored up to activate a secret form. What that form is, she refuses to tell.

complaining abt ashley haters

i've narrowed it down to three categories of people who hate ashley

1. climbing class shipper

2. emily stan

3. chris stan

disclaimer: obviously not all emily stans, not all chris stans, not all climbing class shippers, blah blah blah (i like chris, emily is my favorite and i like climbing class so the last thing i'd do is shit on any of these things as a real hater)

the climbing class shippers usually hate her bc she gets in the way of their cute gay ship. they either say they love her (fake as fuck), hc her as a lesbian just as means to not ship her w chris cuz he's saved for josh, or they hate her for killing chris. climbing class shippers don't really know shit abt any of the characters, they severely mischaracterize ashley, josh and chris. more negatively on ashley bc they think of her as the root of all evil. they also view josh as some little accessory or token, only made to be chris's boyfriend and vice versa. seriously, chris and josh are just boyfriends and that's it. no character Or if they do somehow add character it's extremely out of line and horribly written

emily stans hate ashley bc of the bite thing. that's it. even if mike can literally murder emily, it's still ashley's fault. they'll more than likely make shit up abt ashley to fit their narrative, and end up getting most things completely wrong. they also just neglect the fact of like. trauma and mental health. that's not to say emily deserved any of the treatment her friends gave her, because she also started to panic and reel from almost being shot (see the gif of her curling up in a ball) emily stans don't rly gaf abt like the complexities of the mental trauma all the characters had gone thru at that point, and just shit on ashley like she wanted to murder emily herself

and the chris stans act the same way. it's usually men hating on ashley for killing him when it's literlaly your choice to shoot her or not. making an out of character decision for chris gets him punished. they're also similar to the emily stans when it comes to mental health, they don't understand ashley's been through a lot even tho they spent the whole game watching her stress unfold. she's unpredictable, as said by the devs, and yes killing chris was on purpose, he's running at her with a gun, he lied to her, and there was a monster chasing him and who knows if she even thought the thing was real or not. we don't know what's going thru her mind because she's that broken

and i reblogged a post that said something about hating female characters for the same traits a male character has. most people feel sympathy for josh when he reaches his breaking point in the mines and starts experiencing psychosis. josh has been through a lot of trauma and stress, trauma that starts because of the events of The Prologue. but when ashley is under stress and severely traumatized (something that josh is responsible for), she's a whiny bitch. and yes i know their situations aren't exactly comparable, but nobody ever felt sympathy for her after she literally can watch josh get sawed in front of her. even if it was fake, she had no way of knowing. she reacted to it as if it were real and it affected her accordingly.

ashley is jumpy and emotional, she's not like chris who shuts down and becomes more non verbal as the stress piles on. she's reactive, anxious and stressed out. she's not gonna think clearly at all, that's why you see her jump to conclusions. she thinks the ghost thing is real for crying out loud, like she's not in her right mind at all. when josh brings up the spirit board, she sounds unimpressed. but when things get turned up a notch, her anxiety goes through the roof and she becomes very reactive. she goes from unimpressed by the board to apologizing profusely to hannah or beth's "ghost" during the seance

like people hate her for how she deals w her trauma, how she reacts when she literally has never been in a situation like this before, just like everyone else. this is all a new and frightening situation, which is why it's a horror game brah. i swear ashley haters just don't even stop to understand her or even try, they just sit there and make shit up and it's legit so irritating. like gtfo if you don't get her writing or character

side note, i've never met a josh stan who hates ashley (on the topic of climbing class) i don't doubt that they exist but josh stans aren't included in the climbing class category bc climbing class shippers don't even think of josh as a character, like i said, they just view him as chris's boyfriend. actual josh stans who like josh for him typically like ashley in my experience. just felt the need to mention that since i'm like known as josh's number one fan

OH BOY WOULD I (apparently-- this is so long😭) There are 3 things here: the article quoted in the post, my tags about that, and OPs comments on the article. My tags are about the fact that I honestly felt baffled by what the article of the author was saying, like what the heck do they see as the link between fans saying Harry is gay and Harry playing a gay man in My Policeman, why are they connecting those dots? Are they saying that he chose the role (as it kind of feels like they are) in order to further a sinister agenda of pretending to be queer to keep/gain fans? Or are they simply saying that people who think he's gay will see the role as further evidence of that or something? The OP of the post addresses the fact that the author's weird and confusing takes wouldn't be possible without the idea that a person can queerbait, and disputes that, which I agree with. They point out that this writer (despite being a gay man) apparently believes that closeting is just a personal discomfort issue rather than a necessity for many, rather than something done because systemic discrimination against queer people does in fact still exist. In the next line of the article (not pictured in the post) he speculates that Harry's character in MP "might have thrived in the more permissive era that gave us Styles in a sequined jumpsuit," which seems to confirm that they don't understand that this discrimination still exists (and that the whole point of the movie and Harry's casting in it and just…everything… sailed well over their head), because they apparently simply never considered the possibility that Harry might be doing things associated with being queer because he might, maybe, possibly …be queer?! But instead they go straight to assuming he is "queerbaiting." Which he is not.

Queerbaiting is when the writers of a fictional property lure in queer fans with promises of a product that they have no intention of delivering. Period. But some people see Harry that way! They cast him in the same light as a TV show that can be scripted to fulfill an agenda, saying he's been waving flags, he's dangled promises of a coming out and if he doesn't deliver we have the right to be angry. But unlike a TV show character, his life is REAL and is his own and he owes us only what he actually has sold us; a CD or entry to a show, yes, but not to control the content thereof- he himself IS NOT THE PRODUCT.

But more importantly to me, why do we worry so much about this? Why the panic that someone publicly perceived as straight is "appropriating" queer culture? I do not believe that queerness is a finite commodity to be hoarded, is a territory to be defended or a country club to keep out the rabble; queerness is a gospel to spread. It is a gift that should be freely available to everyone, a door to open, an invitation to liberation to be shared.

As Harry said, we're all a little bit gay aren't we? and as fictional!Louis in one of my favorite fics said, except people who are all the way gay, and as the tumblr post says, wishing you were a lesbian is a symptom of being one; people who are knocking at the doors of gatekept queerness wanting to come in and try out some parts of it… are they straight/cis? Who are we to say so? Seems to me that a desire to act otherwise is in itself enough, is a strong indicator that they are not and the proper response would be to embrace them and celebrate their arrival, to treat them like someone who has escaped oppression and made it across a perilous border to the side of freedom, to join our (demilitarized) ranks. Do we want to be the enforcers of hetereonormativity by insisting that only we special few who have somehow passed the trials and proven ourselves worthy (to who? who gets to decide?) get to occupy the beautiful autonomous zone of queerness, do we want to push everyone else back inside the prison of gender policing and labeling and rules of how they can behave if they show signs of stepping out of line, or do we want to destroy the very idea of that boundary in favor of freedom for everyone? I am not a cop to police the boundaries of queerness, to turn people away at the border, to tell them they aren't enough, to demand they present their most private desires to be judged for validity.

I don't want to mirror the exclusionary scarcity mentality of those who are afraid, I want us to be the ones who show that something else is possible. For there to be more queerness in the world, more freedom, more options than most people in the past or present had and have. Harry has more options and freedom than his MP character had (simply by having money if nothing else), but he still faces difficult choices; the fight is not yet won and if we act like the oppressors, if we choose scarcity over abundance, it never will be. The gates will simply crack to let a few privileged people through and they (like the well off American white cis male writer of that article) will continue to uphold the oppressive norms of a homophobic society, because they are acting from a place of scarcity and gatekeeping. I believe we can do better.

Personal Opinion: The Bachelor but make it gay. No, this doesn’t mean one guy dating multiple men. This means the bachelor falls in love with his male handler and they embark on this thrilling, romantic ride of an adventure while on the show. Every moment made my heart swell in the best way possible and in the end, I had fallen for Dev and Charlie as well. As I’m sure you all would too. Them and their found family of queers.

- Okay, I’ve only recently seen the appeal of reality TV with my brief fall into Big Brother. That being said, I still loathe the Bachelor franchise. I hate the heteronormative, toxic, female VS female storylines that they push and I hate the attention-seeking drama hogs that are cast every season. That is why this book is amazing. It completely subverts all those tropes by having an incredibly diverse cast and crew. I mean, we have the bachelor himself, the prince in this case, Charles Winshaw. He’s a tech mogul with a hot body who has severe anxiety and OCD. He’s also on the ace spectrum (probably) and gay (although he was repressed and didn’t even realize it). His love interest is his openly gay handler, Dev Deshpande who is desi and is suffering from depression. We have Jules Lu, Chinese and bi. We have Parisa Khadim, pan and brown. We have Skylar Jones, black and ace, with a non-binary partner. We have Ryan Parker who is the queer white guy. We have Angie and Daphne, the final two girls in the competition who are both queer! (Lesbian and bisexual respectively) And it was just so amazing watching this journey as Charlie and Dev fell in love and became this found family with everyone else.

- Charlie and Dev are just so adorable. They’re so patient and understanding with one another. When Charlie had his panic attacks, Dev was by his side. He never judged Charlie for his “quirks” and he paid so much attention to Charlie that he learned his coping skills like tapping out “calm” in morse code or breathing three times. He didn’t need Charlie to tell him those things. He just did everything he could to calm Charlie and accommodate his needs to make his experience on the show as pleasant and tolerable as possible.

- Likewise, when Dev had his depressive episode in Munich, Charlie stayed. When others left and were pushed away like Ryan and Jules, Charlie chose to stay. Because Charlie knew what it was like to push people away when all he wanted was for them to stay. And he was there for Dev every time. They knew when the other one was spiraling and instinctively went to look for one another when they were on set and it just made their chemistry so great to witness. It’s no surprise that literally all of their friends knew they were together.

- I love how this book strongly advocates for therapy and talking about how you don’t need to have your sexuality figured out at any specific point in time. For Dev, he was five. And for Charlie, he was twenty-eight. Both are okay and valid. And I love that they made each other feel valid. And for Dev, who was so afraid of being seen as not Fun Dev for going to therapy, I am so happy that Jules, Skylar, Parisa, and Charlie all talked about their own experiences in therapy to make him feel valid too.

- Okay, Dev flying Parisa out to be with her best friend on his birthday and Charlie flying out Leland Barlow, Dev’s favorite pop singer, to do a concert in Cape Town, South Africa, was just so sweet of them both! It made me feel so giddy too, just seeing them have fun at that concert especially after that big fight they had. Like Dev knew he was a dick and Charlie still did this for him all because of the depressive episode. I want a sugar daddy that will do that for me.

- And Charlie reading Dev’s entire script and loving it and telling Dev that it needs to be sold even though it’s about brown men falling in love is just so adorable and validating? I love that so much, especially as a writer. And the fact that Charlie realized his feelings after reading it was just so, so great! And the way he realized that his OCD wasn’t triggered when he was close to Dev and only Dev was just so sweet. Ugh, they’re just so fucking sweet!

- Their respective best friends are so funny and confident and I adore them. Jules and Parisa knew that their best friends were fucking and set them up at almost every turn. Parisa especially is hilarious and just brilliant. She was ready to sue Ever After for discrimination and became their new head of HR. She gave Charlie condoms, lube, and vividly drawn diagrams of anal sex. She is a queen on every level. And then we have Jules with that “practice date” idea and also pretending she couldn’t be his fake girlfriend so she can push the Dev/Charlie agenda.

- I knew that that ending was going to happen. I knew that they were going to slap all of the footage that they could find of Charlie and Dev together to create the first ever gay season. But just seeing the storyline the editors made actually play out was just so amazing. And getting to see Dev’s reaction for all 12 hours of it was just so pure. And the fact that Mark Davenport just rolled with the punches with his hosting and was essentially a huge fan of them finally just coming together was adorable! Because when Dev burst out on stage to apologize and also profess his love to Charlie, it honestly almost made me tear up. I wish it was real so that I could’ve watched it live.

- Dev’s boundless energy (when he’s not depressed) is so adorable. When he was happy and running through first-class on the airplane, when he was talking about falling in love in a boat, when he wanted to take photos of his version of Charlie to keep for himself, when he was arguing with producers for Charlie’s sake, I can absolutely see why Charlie fell in love. And when Charlie was drunk and talking about how Dev is the most beautiful man in the world and deflecting every gay man’s advance because he wanted them to know that Dev deserved to be loved far more than him, it just meant so much to me as someone with self-confidence issues too.

- Angie and Daphne are just so cool honestly. I love the girl power friendships on the show. And Angie is just a delight in general.

Dislikes:

- The only reason why this does not get a perfect score is due to a personal issue. I have beef with Dev. His reaction being to leave the show and ghosting all of his friends was just wrong. He could have just looked at any of their texts and realized he should’ve watched the show earlier. But no, he isolated himself. And for a guy trying to focus on his mental health, I just want to say pushing all of your fucking loved ones to the curb is not the way to do it. I am glad they all confronted him about it because fucking hell, I’d be so mad at him. And I’m glad he apologized to Charlie. But yeah, if Jules and Parisa beat the hell out of him, I would not have blamed them for that. He really ditched them all and his lovesick mentally ill lover too. Fuck. And his parents were watching Ever After and they just didn’t think to encourage him to watch too? I get they (and his therapist, Alex) were all trying to respect his boundaries but FUCK. Three whole months of radio silence and Charlie sent him a whole ass voicemail basically pouring his whole heart out and I just hated him for a solid four pages.

- Fuck Maureen Scott. She was the showrunner and she was just a monster. She really said, “I can’t be queerphobic, I hired all these queer employees.” And in that same breath, demonized Angie, a black bi woman. She said their next princess couldn’t be bisexual and that’s just so wrong. I’m glad she got fired and I’m glad the next princess ended up being lesbian. Let’s fucking go Daphne! I am actually less mad at Maureen than I am at Dev and the rest of the crew for never even trying to stand up to her in the past. Granted, they didn’t have the privilege and power that Charlie did as a cis white man with money but still. Well, at least Skylar admitted that they’d been complicit for too long. Charlie really pulled a power move at the end though when he got them to reedit and overhaul everything.

- I don’t know how I feel about Ryan. I do get why he broke up with Dev but damn, he really did act like a dick in the beginning. He didn’t even own up to it. He just let Dev be depressed and made no real effort to care about him. He claims he cares about Dev and didn’t want Dev to be in the closet for Charlie but he does not know how to be even a little empathetic toward people. He’s insensitive and abrasive and I wish we saw more of his caring side earlier.

- Fuck Megan too. And Delilah as well. And Maureen for sending them into Charlie’s room for that altercation. And also sending in that one boyfriend to just deck Charlie in the face. But I do love that we saw Charlie grow over the course of the show through that. He couldn’t speak up for that girl when her boyfriend was calling her slut but he spoke up against Delilah calling Megan “crazy.” And he later stood up to Maureen when literally no one else did. He had severe anxiety and he did that. He stuck to his morals and stuck to the love he had for Dev and I respect that so fucking much. Especially after all that Ryan said about him. I think that was the point Ryan realized that Charlie really was good for Dev.

- I’m still mad at Dev.

- Also a bit at Charlie and Dev for not getting together sooner. Like, I get why they couldn’t but the fact that they wouldn’t admit it wasn’t just practice sooner is just so mind-numbingly stupid to me. You’re telling me everyone else around them realized they were in love and they were out here just fervently making out and then going, “He doesn’t feel the same.” Then again, both of them somehow grew up thinking that they didn’t deserve love. Charlie I get after everything he’d gone through with his bigoted brothers and close-minded father and smug dudebro co-worker Josh Han. Dev, I get a lot less. So I am once again mildly mad at Dev. I just wish he would’ve reached out to Charlie or watched the damn show! I mean, I get why he refused to watch but his parents could’ve at least told him about the edit he was getting!

- I’m still mad at Dev for icing out Charlie like that. Charlie was just the sweetest  person and Dev just… UGH. But they were back together in the end and I am glad they are. I just wish the road to getting there hadn’t been so stupid.

Went to see a production of Cats with my gf, and here’s some cool shit that I noticed

- The woman they got to play Bombalurina was a goddess. My ace girlfriend actually leaned over to me when she came onstage and whispered “oh my god, she’s hot”.

- Skimbleshanks had a sweater vest and it made me insanely happy.

- Jennyanydots had the most sparkly tap shoes I’ve ever seen and I loved them.

- Rum Tum Tugger was an absolute delight. He wore cowboy boots. Instead of saying “meow” as he came onstage, he cackled like a hyena. He was (rightfully) very proud of his butt, and never missed an opportunity to show it off.

- The actor who played Tugger looked very young, and because of this, the actor who played Munkustrap seemed far more amused with his antics than most other versions I’ve seen. Like he’s watching his himbo younger brother preen like a peacock while the grown-ups try to get him to rein him in, and Munk is just like “nah, let him have his fun before the family anxiety sets in”

- I forget who was egging Pouncival on to scratch Grizabella (maybe Mungojerrie?), but you could tell Pounce didn’t want to. His poor little knees were knocking together.

- Bombalurina got such a death glare when she called Bustopher fat.

- Tugger spent the majority of Bustopher Jones hanging out on top of some junk, pouting because he wasn’t the center of attention. At one point, when Bustopher walks around greeting everyone, he sees Tugger and cheerfully waves at him. Tugger puts on a big grin and waves back...then as soon as Bustopher’s back is turned, it’s back to glaring daggers at him. Tugger is uncomfortable when we are not about him.

- Shae was originally sad Bustopher didn’t say “toodle pip” at the end of his song...until the Macavity crashing sound effect went off and everyone onstage freaked out, and Bustopher said it quickly as he ran off in a panic. I thought Shae was gonna die from laughter.

- Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer didn’t have cockney accents, and I know that’s because it’s an American cast and it wouldn’t make sense, but I just can’t think of that song without those ridiculous accents, I’m sorry.

- Old Deuteronomy’s make-up kind of made him look like a little old lady.

- During Victoria’s coming of age dance, Grizabella was up on the tire, mimicking the moves, like she was reliving when she got to perform that dance herself. It was a very sad, but incredibly clever little detail.

- Grizabella’s actress actually made sounds of pain as she tried to dance at the end of the Jellicle Ball sequence, to emphasize the fact she’s very old and probably sick. Another very sad, but cool detail.

- INTERMISSION ANECDOTES

- Shae and I did not have cheap seats. We were about three rows from the stage (they actually moved the orchestra to have the seating we were in), and for the two of us, the tickets were $300. The woman to my left was not having a good time. I saw her clap maybe three times the whole show.

- The couple to Shae’s right (two adorable lesbians) had never seen anything to do with Cats before, so they leaned over to Shae and said, “you guys seem to know what’s happening here. Why are they so mean to that old lady cat?” This prompted the two of us to give them a crash course on the bare-bones plot, the many fan interpretations of the characters, and the fact they should avoid the 2019 movie like a fungus.

- There was a family of six in the row in front of us, with a daughter who looked about thirteen. She heard us talking to the lesbian couple (specifically me talking about John Mills playing Gus in the 1998 filmed version, and how utterly heartbreaking it is), and mentioned how she knew a lot of that stuff too, but rarely found anyone to talk to about it. I wanted to give her a hug, because that’s exactly how I felt at fourteen when I first discovered this musical.

- Old Deuteronomy wandered back onstage before the intermission ended, and Shae and I made Grandpa Simpson jokes pretty much the entire time (my favorite was “I’m cold, and there are wolves after me!”)

- I did not like the lady they got to play Sillabub (Jemima’s American name for people who’ve not seen a stage version). She just...didn’t sound like she knew what she was doing.

- The guy who played Gus, however, was phenomenal. His voice was very deep and soothing.

- The cast actually gathered around Gus to hear his stories of being onstage, and it was really, really cute.

- The Pekes and the Pollicles actually was in this show, and went where Growltiger’s Last Stand usually goes. Gus plays the Rumpus Cat and it’s less of a hot mess and more of an adorable little impromptu number to make Gus feel better about his bygone youth and career and don’t touch me I’m sad.

- Tugger tattled on Sillabub and Victoria during Skimbleshanks, when they’re causing a ruckus during the “when Skimble was about and on the move” line.

- Macavity’s costume was okay. It was pretty neat because the way it was designed made it look like he was missing patches of fur.

- As per usual, Munkustrap and Demeter nuzzling in the glow of the flashlight after Macavity is chased away is cute as hell.

- Tugger and Mistoffelees have a secret handshake. That is all.

- Memory was immaculate. No notes.

- When everyone is welcoming Grizabella back, she gets to Old Deuteronomy and starts to bow, but he stops her and bows to her instead. It was incredibly sweet.

- Of course, Tugger was the last to leave the stage. He had to give us a pelvic thrust goodbye.
