made a full circle to gen1posting..... i love duncan with my heart and soul but in a way nobody else does. hes awful and he sucks but thats what makes me like him. he dated mal in juvie. him and trent were a thing for like . a week . maybe less then a week . him and alejandro have dated and broken up within the same day at least 8 times. he is actually the boyfailure ever. i think after all stars he left courtney alone to go pursue guys. they left it on a good note they apologized to each other. eventually. he never actually settles down with anyone . at least for a while . the list of people hes dated for less then a week is Expansive . something ive seen Absolutely nobody considering is duncan and justin(dustin ?????) they are so real to me. they do not like each other actually they hate each other but in an absolutely romantic way. they walked so scike could run. i appreciate a lot of duncan ships actually. dunhar is up there with dustin(??) but slightly below it cause of the fandoms interpretation of them. harold is taller then duncan take that information in stride. they are so real to me though they play videogames together they are the gross not at all romantic relationship i need. one i have seen literally NOBODY ever talk about is duncan and owen they are so real. and pretty healthy considering it includes duncan. ..dowen ???? SWEEP!!!!! idk i think people just need to slap duncan and random men together until something sticks more. hes insanely shippable in a surprising way. ive been forgetting to sign off ghhh. REAL YEAH. I never really cared for Duncan first watch but when I really thought about it he's one of the most entertaining characters. he's literally the worst ever. his entire family is police and he still downright refuses to follow the law. everyone exaggerates how terrible he is. he's literally just a bitch he isn't any worse than anyone else. he keeps a list (habit he picked up from Courtney) of people he dates for less than a week. it is genuinely a mile long. Alejandro is on the list at least 40 times, every single man is listed multiple times.

also Dustin is real as fuck. like genuinely you're such a genius. personally I'm a fan of djuncan because they drive me insane but Dustin is sooo good. also it has a really good ship name. all of his ships are pretty good tbh. you're such a genius and so real

the last time i engaged hard with fandoms, like. i was baffled and appalled by how getting that many people fixated on one thing spawns dogshit takes, fanon, and trends at a rate that boiled u like a frog if u checked tags every day but was objectively insane from the outside. its so fast. the less of a media to obsess over, the worse it gets. two shippable white dudes? fucking calamity. and yeah, absolutely any challenging material is either sanded off, elided, or examined in the worst faith you could imagine. both experiences started euphoric as i got social engagement that lit up my dopamine-seeking brain like christmas, and then law of large numbers eventually made it so there was no amount of cool mutuals or number go up to outweigh the braindead posting.

all this to say there are maybe 3 people on earth i want to see bg posting from and everyone else i am holding at gunpoint. no trigger discipline. they say anything lacking basic critical thinking about a dnd character and whatever happens, happens

okay so it is easier for me to say who i don't ship her with (i find her very shippable!) and that is una and m'benga*.

una... here is the thing, i did not care much for una at first (during snw and short treks) but because a close friend of mine loves her, i ended up paying attention to her and falling in love with her. during disco, the short treks and the cage (majel my angel) una is intriguing, mysterious, and sexy. she looks like she can fuck you up, correct your grammar and not mess up her hair-do while she does it. snw una is... a wet block of concrete to me. which is insane cause... rebecca romjin?? i love her. i am obsessed with the librarians and i loved eve, but she is so... meh to me on snw that i literally can't picture her and christine. though, i do love the idea of them as platonic friends who become super close after all the bullshit of season one -- una opening up to christine cause she already knows everything so she becomes her confidant.

now, with m'benga, my thing is, in an interview, babs and jess described their relationship as familial and that intrigued me a lot. i think it could be an insanely interesting perspective to explore their relationship from. but... as i was answering this, and inspired by jess and babs's wonderful chemistry during 2.01... i have to amend that. between receiving this ask in the kitchen and going up the stairs to my bedroom i came up with an entire emma au for them. like, m'benga and christine as old friends who are incredibly close, who know each other better than anyone else. m'benga who sees her doing stupid things and tries to steer her to a better path, sees her fall in love with undeserving guys and girls and starts feeling something inside his chest but he keeps it inside?? all the longing, the pining, and then when he pulls away christine realizes what has been in front of her during this entire time?? so yeah, i think i ship them now.

but god, everyone else yeah. i did not ship her and pike, but i started reading (and still need to finish!!) @curator-on-ao3 fic about christine helping him a few years after his accident and it just took my breath away. the possibilities of their dynamic?? i could go with it.

bday live in jk's studio: that room looks like a super plain room with no personalisation tbh (when compared to rapline studios), so when hobi said that it was jk's studio, it could be that thats the room jk uses to record when he's in the office building, not like a "plaque on the door" type of jungkook studio. He is a homebody and probably has a more sophisticated setup in his own home, who knows. so it could be that there are like 3-4 rooms like that for vocal line members and jk just happens to use this one a lot?? then jimin too uses one of these rooms and today he happens to pick the one jk uses a lot.

(To be fair, now that ive seen jk's apartment, it looks like he's a minimalist. so that might as well be his actual studio.)

With the clothes comment, (tbvh I dont really remember this moment clearly) i have to reach harder and think about things that two platonic superstar bros would do. 🤔 They both are from the same world of fame and the way they look matters so I assume they talk about clothes sometimes? Especially during public schedules like airport appearances. Maybe they get into disagreements about what is "cool" and "in" and maybe in those instances, jk wins the argument? Or jm ends up listening to jk's opinions, kinda like admitting he's got the better sense if style. Maybe hobi is alluding to some kind of inside joke like that.

This one... honestly this one stumps me. Because normally, if one ends up with such an incriminating mark on their neck, there are fifty other options that would work better and be considered wiser than the one jikook chose. To actually point out and address it to their coworkers like that, with cameras around? Even the staff were stumped. Use makeup, call it an insect bite, or just ask the staff to not air the footage, anything. But instead, we get full coverage on the fucking hickey. Once from jm and then again from jk. And they air it. I know this is supposed to be a non delulu explanation, but the best I can come up with is that, jikook were fucking with us. They were fucking with us and laughing about it behind the scenes. They know that we like to find shippable moments and decided, we'll give them a moment that's so fucking bizarre, that they won't know what to think. Its genius because they know that our brains will definitely go there when we see the hickcey but there's NOTHING we can do about it. Bet they enjoyed every second, absolute menaces.

Chilchuck is insane. That's why.

Everyone else has varying levels of autism and trauma and bad decisions but Chilchuck specifically is not on some valiant quest, he's having a midlife crisis. Even the damn cat has more of a goal than he does. Izutsumi wants to un-beastify herself or failing that get revenge on the dude who beastify-ed her in the first place. Chilchuck is working towards retirement.

It is unlikely that any of us will meet somebody who's on a desperate quest to save their sister from a dragon or a chef forced into ambiguous survival cannibalism. You probably already know a grumpy dude with a bleak family life who takes a lot of pride in his work cause it's all he's got left.

If I were to identify the hallmarks of a tumblr sexy man outside the surface level traits (skinny, white, shippable, ect) I would have to call it the balance between competence and delinquency. It appeals to a user base populated by wierd lil fuck ups. So you're right, Senshi is considered sexy by tumblr but he is not a tumblr sexyman because he is simply not pathetic enough to balance out how good he is at everything else (cook, vegetable gardener, ecologist, warrior, emotional anchor, catdad, diplomat, you get the picture)

Chilchuck on the other hand. The dude is a mess. Yes, he did knife a dragon in the eyeball without losing any of his limbs. Congratulations, everyone else did worse. He then has to be threatened into having an honest conversation with someone he cares about. These two things are less than 24 hours apart. He is the only one there with any common sense or a normal sense of self-preservation and it doesn't help him at all.

Everyone wants to talk about how Senshi is a tumblr sexyman but...Senshi is actually attractive. Chemistry: Banter. These people get on so well it'd be a crime if they didn't hook up. They are basically already fucking with their words. Sometimes couples who had so much chemistry that they rewrote the show. Think Mulder/Scully, Leslie/Ben from Parks & Rec

Attraction: these characters are unreasonably hot for each other, to the point where they ignore all sense

Narrative symmetry: covers everything from being narrative foils, contrasting archetypes (e.g. grumpy/sunshine), whenever there are PARALLELS - e.g. BlackBonnet, Ineffable Husbands, Gelphie

Obsession/devotion: They're insane about each other. Enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, I'd-go-the-ends-of-the-earth-for-you, I'd-die-for-you. Think Wuthering Heights, Jayvik, 'you're the bane of my existence and the object of all my desires' etc.

Tragedy: the love story is beautiful because you know it has to end. The world will be cruel to you but you fell in love anyway. This one is Orpheus/Eurydice in Hadestown. (Also, the potential for this kind of tragedy - the threat of a happy ending ripped away)

then there's vysel. i hate him so much. blond hair blue eyes son of a bitch . he's a former swing turned alt rock artist who got popular for being hot and shippable i guess . also he's a reanimated corpse piloted by evil spirits but shhhh no one knows that (though it would probably add to his sex appeal if ppl did know . so.) he's like the biggest bitch forever and ever he is very celebritycore mentally i'm ripping him apart with my teeth . he uses his visual illusion powers TO GIVE HIMSELF BLOND HAIR BLUE EYES WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

book review: C.J. Hauser, Family of Origin (2019)

Genre: the most literary of fiction

Bottom line: i hate literary fiction. ok i don’t hate fiction obviously i just hate when it tries to be too literary?? u feel me fam

Two estranged half-siblings spend a week tying up loose ends on the remote island where their father died (it is unclear if he committed suicide). The “loose ends” are that they had sex once, as teenagers, and now it’s weird. The island is populated by cultists and nut jobs who are convinced it’s the end of days and evolution is going in reverse. I have… many equivocal feelings about this book. On the one hand there are so many lines that just peel me like an orange, lines like “There was nothing more humiliating to Elsa than her own desires” or “Elsa was never surprised when someone killed himself. She was only surprised by her own animal perseverance day after day.” Plus I think this book really gets the dynamic where they’re constantly needling each other and every interaction is doused in fifteen gallons of repressed attraction. I think this is a novel that accomplished everything it set out to do with assurance and aplomb; I’m just fundamentally uninterested in what it’s trying to do. It’s about damaged people who learn to heal but the problem is the healing is much less engaging than the hurting.

Here’s the difference between speculative fiction and literary fiction: SF/F presumes zombies are literal zombies. Instead of assuming the zombies metaphorically represent something abstract, you just take them at face value ok? You spot a time machine or a vampire, you take it at face value and you add additional layers of meaning later. Which puts me in a pickle because Family of Origin is decidedly not a genre book, so what am I supposed to think about Famous Bigshot Biologist Ian, Elsa and Nolan’s dad, and his reasons for relocating to this island? There’s no cell phone service; it is quite literally removed from civilization. When I said nut jobs I mean it’s populated by secessionists, survivalists, doomsday preppers, anti-establishment types of all stripes. And they have some kooky theories about ducks. Which Ian apparently subscribed to. If this was SF/F I would just go along with it because maybe Elsa and Nolan, having arrived on the island, will finish Ian’s life’s work and find this elusive duck and prove Charles Darwin wrong haha??? But it’s fucking literary fiction which means I have to look for SYMBOLISM gahhh kill me now.

C.J. Hauser knows what she’s doing. Her bio says she’s a creative writing instructor and you can see why. It sucks that “what she’s doing” only glancingly aligns with “what I want her to do,” but c’est la vie. I was immediately taken with her choice of island setting (remote islands breed intimacy!) and the familiar configuration of type-A older sister paired with a younger brother who begs for a scrap of notice or attention. From the get-go Elsa’s priority is control. Nolan’s is acceptance. This quote sums it up pretty handily:

The problem was that Nolan wanted answers, and Elsa wasn’t sure what she would do with answers if she found them.

Like, I personally identify more with Nolan than with Elsa, because there’s this sense of learned futility that I find kind of charming in him but everyone finds annoying af in me:

Nolan wished he could return to a time before anyone had any expectations for him.

Elsa, otoh. Here is Elsa thinking about her ex, a relationship she clung to well past the expiration date merely because he loved her more than she loved him back, and she wasn’t willing to give up that bargaining position:

As long as his side of their love had more ballast to it, she felt in control and like he would not leave. Everyone left Elsa, so she had to be sure.

Nolan and Elsa are certified disasters. They’re both so burnt-out, and twisted up inside with shame and guilt and impossible desires, and the island is the ideal backdrop for them to resolve their issues:

There was so much that was not allowed that the island seemed willing to permit. Things underwater. Things offshore.

That night, they made no pretenses about the sleeping bag and slept cupped like shells in their father’s bed.

Jesus Joseph and Mary this woman can write. I’ve even seen lines from this novel quoted in those tumblr compilation poetry posts.

Anyway Elsa and Nolan’s dynamic is they do not get along and they’ve never gotten along. It starts with Elsa’s resentment at being displaced by a new sibling, which was compounded by Elsa’s mom being divorced and replaced by Nolan’s mom. These kids have spent all their lives probing at each other’s weaknesses and I am reminded of a very apt line from a book that has absolutely jack shit to do with incest: “When siblings spar, the true cause is proximity.” This seems to apply to Elsa and Nolan’s situation more potently than most.

Will you just LOOK at this god-tier sparring though:

Nolan touched a drop of rain that hung by her ear, letting it spill onto his fingers. Elsa smacked his hand.

Don’t— Elsa began, but Nolan, dirty water dripping from his fingers, grabbed Elsa around the ankles and shook her, groaning, Graaghh! like some B-movie Swamp Thing from the deep, ready to pull Elsa into the pool. Elsa considered Nolan’s hands around her ankles.

It’s one part goofing off, one part competitive banter, and one part violent sexual tension . Elsa takes meticulous mental inventory of every instance of skin-to-skin contact and I’m like—girl you know it only means something if you let it? Who the hell pays that much attention every time their brother accidentally brushes shoulders with them?!

There was a knot between Elsa’s shoulders that twisted taut when she saw him.

Nolan is shiftless and aimless, doesn’t even have the balls to break up with his girlfriend, his internal monologue is a constant refrain of “Nolan wished there was some more-adult adult whose job this could be.” Child you are TWENTY-EIGHT years old and need to start owning your choices. I think this hypothesis that’s sorta floated in an early Elsa POV is pretty conclusively disproved in the course of the novel:

But people didn’t change. They just ran away from everyone who knew them too well so they could start over and do a better job of obscuring the worst parts of themselves.

Because they do change, both of them change and mend their ways and they become a family again and ok here’s where I have a problem with C.J. Hauser: Her idea is that you have to choose—Nolan is either Elsa’s brother or her lover:

And he understood then that he could have kept Elsa as a sister or slept with her. It was a choice, and what he’d just done was to have given her up.

It seems her whole motivation for seducing him was as a big fuck-you to their father. I’m not saying she was not attracted to him I’m saying her field of vision is dominated by Ian:

Everyone here is insane, Elsa said.

They have their reasons, said Nolan.

They have stories, not reasons.

Which is really sweet and I am a fiend for these callbacks that deliberately echo the older sibling interacting with the younger one as a baby, but Ian’s stature is such that he takes over everything?? We find out that he wasn’t that great of a scientist. That he wasn’t a great dad was clear from the start.

So the really interesting thing from a craft perspective is the climax of this book occurs in the middle of it instead of at the end. The only other novel I can think of that does this is Cloud Atlas but that has a very unique structure. The film The Talented Mr. Ripley also kind of does this?

It’s revealed that Elsa isn’t Ian’s biological child. Her mom had an affair and when Ian found out he divorced her and married Nolan’s mom. When Elsa learnt the truth, she took the radical step of sleeping with Nolan to prove a point, I guess? To wit: If she wasn’t Ian’s daughter then it wasn’t actually incest. If Ian was troubled then it must be because she was his daughter:

But you are this kid, her mother said. You’re so totally his kid that you think biology is the only way you can be his kid.

I’ll admit that the “they’re not related” reveal does in this instance actually serve a purpose, unlike in some other books (yup this is a Wasteland callout post). And it ties into the theme of biology, and the stupid elusive ducks that supposedly inhabit this godforsaken island:

”We’re no longer good at adapting to things in the natural world because it’s too hard to tell which parts are real anymore so we don’t know what to adapt to.”

So there you have it. Family of Origin is not a book that spoke to my soul but it is a devastatingly exquisite book, and it has a number of really shippable scenes even if the relationship taken as a whole is not one I was rooting for. Here’s Nolan trying to get laid at college:

He didn’t know what to do because there had only ever been Elsa that one time before and Elsa had known what to do.

And then he has a breakdown so bad that he calls Elsa??? For emotional support??? Even though she’s at least 50% of the reason he’s so broken. When Elsa shows up she says ”I drove over two goddamn hours so you could yell at me in person” lolololol every single line of dialogue is so on-point. Oh oh and Elsa biting his ribs and his neck while they’re lying half-naked in bed is another pearl of a scene.

I saved so many quotes from this book and half of them have nothing to do with incest but they’re SENSATIONAL so I’m going to end this review with an assortment of quotes:

that she was afraid to ask for small things like this because the need in them did not seem big enough to draw attention. That she was afraid her small needs would go unnoticed, and so she made plays at bigger ones instead.

Whatever inner thing guided normal people in their choices … Elsa’s was broken. Nolan had been her first wrong choice, years ago, and as much as she’d have liked to pretend she was different now, that it had been a stupid teenage mistake, there was too much other wrongness that came after. Dozens of dubious choices that all seemed to bloom outward from that first moment.

But no, there was a difference between realizing how wrongly he’d been made and the moment the wrongness actually happened.

Because it wasn’t perfect. Because she couldn’t tell the difference between unconditional and infallible.

Maybe the sooner Elsa stopped trying to hunt down some class of people who had all the answers—adults, scientists, Mars missions, Ian—the sooner she could stop the cycle of trying to win. Could look around and decide what kind of game might actually be worth playing.

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

Alright. I cannot do anything that has Arya or Gendry with anyone that is not Gendry and Arya, respectively. Beyond that I have (what I think) is the obvious...j*rya and j*nsa absolutely disgust/baffle me. I just...can’t. Can’t. I don’t think they’re particularly popular but I have them blacklisted so I couldn’t really tell you.

Also, and I’ll apologize for this one because I genuinely want to like them but...j*nerys does NOTHING for me...which is baffling because I think Kit and Emilia have great chemistry. But their love scene made me so uncomfortable. I didn’t think they worked together at all. Maybe it’s because I knew going into it what the familial relationship is? I don’t know I legit just feel nothing when they had scenes together. I also have such a soft spot for Jon and Ygritte and it’s one of the things I thought the show didn’t totally butcher so there’s that too. 

19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

The GoT fandom is HUGE. All of my previous fandoms (or even corners of fandoms) have been much smaller, ie. you pretty much knew everyone (usernames and real names!) and everyone had a way to contribute that was unique to them. Even the expanse of the Gendrya fandom is overwhelming. When it’s like that, what is meant to be a single unified clique becomes several cliques because it’s just impossible to think that this many people (different ages, countries of origin, languages spoken, life experiences, overall preferences, etc.) is going to all be on the same page at the same time. Most of my previous fandoms were for smaller ships so it was usually us against the rest of the fandom OR on the flipside, no one really bothered us. Instead people can be very combative/exclusive with their ideas (the call-out culture is INSANE, ie. posts that start with “anyone who thinks”...my eyes roll so far back into my head they nearly get stuck). I also think this speaks to the changing trend of fandom in general. I don’t give a flying fuck what anyone says, I don’t think everyone is as friendly/supportive in fandom as they used to be. Fandom culture/etiquette is so different than it used to be and I miss it every.single.day. 

((**FOR EXAMPLE: old fandom culture had the unspoken rule that if you reblog an ask meme from someone you first have to send them a message with at least one of the asks. It was another way to get to know people and make friends. But whatever. *sips tea*))

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

GENDRYA forever and ever, amen. Honestly though, aside from them being one of my actual OTPs, they really are the purest. They knew each other as friends, respect one another regardless of gender/class differences, have that overall cinnamon roll-esque found family trope, etc. Gendry is also one of the only men in the series that is not a complete piece of human garbage and Arya deserves the world so it’s only natural that they be paired. I could go on and on but this is not me being salty and I’m preaching to the choir anyway so...

26. Most shippable character?

Jon. Which makes sense...protagonists are also typically the most shippable. ALSO, Kit is an absolute babe so I think there’s a tendency to ship Jon with many different characters based on a fan’s love of his portrayal of the character. Does that make sense?

Why they work? Guanghong is soft, he is, he’s soft and full of stress, anxiety and self-doubt, look at him skate there’s no joy there, just stress, he’s pushed into routines he doesn’t really have any inspiration for and just all around in need of a good cuddle.

Because why the fuck not, Marinette clearly has a thing for cute slightly famous blonde boys, and Minami likes all things cute and adorable so Marinette is definitely on that list, the girl is adorable don’t even try and deny it, she’s cute and smol and Minami would give her lots of snuggles and kisses.  

I don’t ship Yuuri/Minami, I just don’t, I know it’s canon that he has a crush on Yuuri but like… it’s a crush, mostly based on idol worship and he’s not going to end up with his Idol purely because Yuuri ended up with HIS idol. Minami would much rather see Yuuri happy with the one person he truly loves, than get in the way and make Yuuri upset. He’d never wanna make Yuuri upset okay. 

And i don’t really like plots that paint one side of a canon ship out to be shitty just to make the new ship work, like Viktor breaking Yuuri’s heart or being ‘dark and toxic’ to make Minami/Yuuri or Yuuri/ANYONE work, it’s such a shitty plot device like no, Viktor is extra and lovely and sees nothing but sunshine and rainbows in Yuuri, let them be happy like they clearly are and let everyone else just be happy FOR them.

Salty asks: 1-27.

Assuming this is the fandom of your namesake. 

1. OTP that I just don’t get. Probably Sam/Tron. Not to say some folks can’t REALLY fucking rock it (see the “We Are Pilots” verse), but it takes a lot of work. Their only meeting in canon was in a duel to the death with the Program being brainwashed and crazy, and Sam has very little if any reason to even like the guy, even in a post-Legacy setup. 

2, Fandom OTP I only BroTP:  Probably Tron/Ram. Ram had too much chemistry with Flynn, and Tron was single-minded enough about Yori to put his deity on hold. While I can very easily see group marriage as a normal part of Program society, it’s not something I can see in canonical circumstances. 

3. Unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion? Nope. But if they trash my faves, I hope they can back up their dislike with a very good argument. 

4.  A NoTP for my fandom. Not touching Sam/Alan with a 10-meter Rod Primitive. The age gap for one, the paternal role Alan took for two, the fact Lora is not dead in this timeline third, the fourth is the possibility of OT3: Shall We Dance making this ship even more brain-breaking.

5. Has fandom ruined a pairing for me? Not in this fandom, but I’ve avoided the hell out of some shows because I saw the fandom for them was such a big ball of crazy that I wanted to avoid it like kryptonite. 

6. Has fandom made me enjoy a pairing I previously hated? I’m not sure if it’s a good thing, and I’m not sure I’d call it “enjoy,” but there are some Clu/”Rinzler” fics that almost make the whole thing come out as something marginally less squicky and more interesting than “sadist and his sex slave.” 

7. Anything I used to like but dislike now? Y’know, I kinda used to dig Flynn/Alan slash. But after I realized I could make a drinking game out of them (take a shot if they mention Lora, chug the whole thing if they mention Jordan - stay sober the whole night), they lost a lot of appeal. I’ll make an exception for “Shall We Dance” scenarios. Heck, I love Shall We Dance because it’s a very different matter if Lora’s aware and on board with the whole thing. Heck, if someone upgrades it to an Ot4 of “Shall We Dance With Jordan,” then I owe them a six-pack of top-quality beer or cane-sugar soda and my enthusiastic gratitude. 

8. Anon hate? Yes. Received it. But over politics, not fandom. It’s to be expected. The Galaxy Rangers list used to have “don’t talk to Allronix about politics” as one of the bylaws. 

9. Most hated character? Probably Pavel. He’s such a transparent slimeball with little in the way of interesting motivation. Tesler? While he’s a nasty piece of work, there’s wiggle room to argue that he’s doing what he’s doing for the good of the system and doesn’t like doing what he does. Sark? Incredible ham and definitely one note, but David Warner plays the best creeps ever.  (He out-creeped Malcolm McDowell, that’s near-impossible) 

10. Most disliked arc. Probably the Isos. I’m still not sure what they were, or why they were special or what was so great about them, or how they would change everything, aside from the implication they were partly biological. Which is great and all, but the way it was handled has an “organics rule, synthethics drool” vibe that is pretty insulting when everything else in the franchise shows that the Programs are just as capable of love, hate, morality, humor, and free will as the humans who built them. 

11. Unpopular character I like that the fandom doesn’t? I just had to have the bad luck…or the good luck…to latch on very hard to the Tron 2.0 characters. Good luck in that it’s unexplored territory. Bad luck in that I seem to be the only one who writes Mercury, or Crown, or I-No. 

12. Unpopular arc I like the fandom doesn’t? 2.0 again. What got me about it is that the 1982 and Legacy films dealt with malevolent AI who were cruel of other AI and wanted to extend the cruelty. 2.0 inverted it; the uncorrupted Programs were, with very few exceptions, wanting to protect themselves and their home. The corrupted Programs were driven insane by a User who embraced the worst parts of the role. And then you had F-Con who planned to crank that up even more so that they could rule both worlds from the shadows. It really needed to be explored more, as it was a great start. 

13. Unpopular opinion about a character: Sam Flynn kinda spooks me. He has no reason to be merciful or benevolent to Programs. As far as he saw, his dad believed in them, and they stabbed his dad in the back, kept his dad away from him, tried to kill him, tried to kill Quorra, killed all of Quorra’s people, and eventually killed his dad right in front of him. And he’s taking over command of a software company with barely any time to process that trauma.  It’s probably not going to end well for the Programs unless something intervenes.

14. Unpopular opinion about the fandom: They have very little interest in reclaiming the female characters from the margins, and that’s quite frustrating. Quorra and Paige get some fics here and there, but even those petered out. Yes, this fandom is VERY heavily skewed male, but you’ve got Quorra, Paige, Mara, Gorn, Lux, Yori, Lora, Gem, etc. in Legacy canon, and some great potential with Mercury, Ma3a, and Eva Popoff if you import from 2.0. I was hoping to see at least SOMEONE write up a fanfic about Jordan. What kind of woman could handle a brilliant, cheerful, crazy ball of energy like 80′s!Flynn?  

15. Unpopular opinion about the canon: Legacy is very difficult for me to watch. Even though it totally brought the whole thing back from the dead, it’s just frustrating to watch. Not to say everyone didn’t bring their A-game to it, but it took everything that made the first film so much fun and destroyed it, ending up as a depressing waste where everyone loses, and Dillinger Jr is just waiting in the wings to cause even more trouble. 

16. If I could change anything about the canon, what to change? Tron 2.0 totally happened. It would not be hard to come up with a workaround for Ma3a that keeps Lora alive. There’s probably about three or four ways I could come up with other than the made of crack one I’ve got going in my fics. 

17. Instead of X happening, I’d go with Y: If you want something other than “instead of 2.0 being thrown out the airlock, it’s part of canon,” I would have loved to see Sam get rescued by Bartik’s crew (Bonus points if Yori’s running the damn thing) and then meet up with his dad and Quorra. That way, there could have been a little more complexity to the Grid situation and a way to avoid the whole “Programs are evil!” thing Legacy ended up with.

18. Does not shipping something ‘popular’ mean you’re in denial and/or biased? Shipping, IMO is shorthand for schools of character interpretation. Someone who ships Quorra/Sam is going to have a different take than someone who ships Quorra/Zues, or Quorra/Paige. They’re all looking at the same data, but the interpretation of the data is going to vary.   

19. One thing I dislike most about my fandom: It’s a back alley of the 80′s that its own company barely wants to admit they did. This makes canon and newcomers a little hard to come by.

20. Purest ship in the fandom. Tron/Yori was my first OTP. They’re still my OTP, because 82!Tron was such a sweet, earnest dork and Yori was such an adorable, sneaky badass. Post-Legacy? It’s going to be one heck of a climb no matter which guess you take about Yori’s fate (And seriously? Morgan got gypped), but having those two limp off into whatever digital sunset there is would be the closest we get to a happy ending that’s canon-compatible.

21. Crack ships? A crack ship for the sake of a crack ship is a “no thanks!” But there are ships that look like someone did them on a three-drink dare that actually manage to work. I’m thinking to KOTOR fandom where someone made a REALLY awesome case for Canderous/Bastila that should not have worked and totally did. 

22. Popular character I dislike: It’s not so much “dislike” as “I’m not sure what to make of them.” Really wanted some development on Sam. Quorra got Evolution and a nice episode of Uprising, but Sam…he’s still a bit of a blank to me. 

23. Unpopular character I adore:  I especially latched on hard to Jet Bradley after reading the Ghost in the Machine comic because he had clearly done a lot of thinking about what being a User means in that setting, and was bringing up points no one else bothered with. As such, he makes an excellent foil and walking deconstruction fleet while still being, ostensibly, one of the good guys. 

24. Would I recommend Tron to a friend? Only with a ton of disclaimers. This was made in the EARLY 80′s, by people who apparently had no fucking idea what they were doing, and Disney probably signed off on it while under the influence of something. But the combination ends up as something inexplicably brilliant and probably launched thousands of computer animation careers and hundreds more IT careers. 

25.   How would I end it? I’ve got fics in mind for it. I kitbash 2.0 and Legacy shamelessly. The ending I have in mind? Well, Alan and Lora end up giving up their lives in analog to rebuild the Rome Flynn started. Jet ends up dedicating his life to serving the Programs and goes a bit native. Mercury and Tron act as the primary “knights” of Alan and Lora. Sam and Quorra handle much of the rest in the analog world, slowly trying to open up the world and make it ready for the revelation of the digital one. And Yori runs a reformation of the Program religion so that they are prepared to accept the Users as fallible beings who are still powerful, but less “worship as deity” and more “we depend on one another - don’t screw it up.” 

26. Most shippable character? Probably Flynn. I can see him as a fellow who would (prior to the coup) enjoy himself and his opportunities to the fullest, including trying anything twice sexually. 

27. Least shippable character: Probably Esomond Baza. He’s a coward with so little self-esteem, self-respect, or a moral compass that he needs a few months of therapy before even thinking of a date.

His flaws, of which there are many, make him a real, believable character.  He makes mistakes and some really stupid choices and he can be shallow and indecisive and careless sometimes, but he’s so compassionate and intelligent and kind that in spite of his failings, he really is a good person with good intentions.
