Um, I think I would just stop. I'm not gonna bother building back up on another social media, and the death of the only site I use would simply make me stop using social media, not make me migrate.
I've dug my feet, and I do not like to follow the masses.

I have launched about 10 sites on my own accord - just for me - since I began developing them over the past 6 - 8 months. Here are the details of each and their results. Keeping in mind that none of these are my first site ever. Not doing any link building right now - concentrating entirely on content creation and optimization to see where the content settles on Google and where to go from here.
All domains in these scenarios are entirely clean (except for 1 in the logistics shipping site group that I was using to test out some link building tools).
I also don't brag about these sites. I don't tell anyone about them. They are strictly for me for my own testing and implementation.
It seems to me like something's wrong in a core part of my SEO processes. Either in a step I'm doing (or not doing) or the technology stacks I'm using below or what. I don't see how I could launch these sites and everything's a terrible flop with absolutely zero performance, despite doing things differently from site to site (except for some core technical SEO processes).
I don't see how the results are all the same when on just about every 2-3 sites I may:
Use a new server.
Use something different like Generate Press as the framework or an entirely different WordPress theme (fishing site has a premium theme from Premium Coding, contractors site is using the Generate Press basic theme).
Yes, I have checked whether or not Google is reading the links and the content. Google is reading both just fine. None of the links are JavaScript-based.
Use something different in terms of content length (all while observing quality and minimum of 600 words of content per page).
Look at the competition to determine appropriate content levels and so on.
Every single SEO step is tight. I don't overlook anything. Still, it seems like nothing budges. Ever. And real projects are tanking even with increased effort as well as high-quality effort. You would think with the fishing site at 180 pages of content it would be out-performing the contractors site but it's all...the freaking...same. It's absolutely no traffic or rankings and real projects begin tanking badly shortly after I'm brought aboard despite increased hard work, effort, and a focus on much higher quality.
Note: I am not a black hat and I don't practice black hat SEO techniques. Maybe some are borderline at grey hat, but not on every site, only on the test sites on my own, not excessively, and I prefer being aggressive where it makes sense while also observing all proper Google-friendly SEO best practices.
What in the world am I missing by having the exact same results in different niches?
By the way: none of the sites below (except the last one) have any types of author details or public domain information - except the very last real site and still, it's private whois. This is intentional since E-A-T and YMYL are not in Google's core algorithms. So, I'm working on ranking the old-fashioned high-quality way without E-A-T and YMYL considerations.

I got one page to the first page with an obscure on-page SEO tactic as a test. That's it. And it wasn't even an intended page. It was a random one. That was frustrating as hell.
No other rankings. No other impressions. No other clicks. Nothing in GSC.
No traffic in GA.
Yes, both GSC and GA are all verified and added to the site properly.
Same dedicated server with Namecheap.
5th site: Fishing Site
Domain: Clean.
High-quality, user-centric, very interesting highly customized theme
180 pages of content developed over 3 months.
Heavily siloed and customized per sub-topic theme.
All checked:
Discourage robots from indexing the site is unchecked
Nothing wrong with noindexing via HTTP headers
Nothing wrong with noindexing via robots.txt.
Nothing wrong with redirects

It's also worth noting that another unrelated site I recently gained control of is now losing traffic quite significantly. This site is entirely unrelated to any of the above sites and is on their own server. They did very minimal link building and were on a traffic upswing. This traffic loss is despite:
Tripling the content production (still with a focus on high-quality content) and significant social promotion. Instead of three times a week, content production is more frequent. Also continuing the same high-quality. Also has a focus on hitting a score of at least 90 in Rank Math for every post.

Google Discover: How to Rank and Drive Traffic
Google Discover is an automatically generated and highly personalized mobile feed based on your online activity. It shows information and news about the topics that interest you, like SEO or golf.
It’s more like a social network than a search engine, but your search activity and history is crucial for providing a relevant and timely feed.
Millions of people see a personalized Google Discover feed on their mobile devices every day, and it’s become a solid source of traffic for many websites since its introduction in 2018. This is especially true for news and media outlets, many of which now get the bulk of their organic traffic from Discover.
Even our humble little SEO blog got almost 150k clicks from it in the past six months:
Google Discover is still a big unknown, though. And because this topic calls for expert collaboration, we asked a few SEO experts for their insights:
But first…
How Google Discover generates your feed
To become a great SEO, you need to know how search engines work. And we need to understand the same with Discover.
According to Google, they use the following data to generate the feed:
Your activity across all Google products (e.g., your search activity, watched YouTube videos, and engagement with Discover results)
Location history
Location settings
Topics you follow
Do you see the similarity to social networks now? The feed reflects your hobbies, current interests, and everything else in the world relevant to you. It’s so personalized that it even considers your level of expertise and how important that topic is to you.
For example, half my feed is almost always about SEO since that’s the topic I interact with the most. As you can see, you can even “follow” the topic of SEO:
Interestingly, you can check how Google categorizes the results in your feed. Suganthan referred me to this method discovered by Valentin Pletzer, who found out that you can access this information by clicking Send feedback > System logs > Card category:

For example, we can see that being on Google News certainly helps with Discover performance as it has its own “NEWS_HEADLINES” category. If this is relevant to you, check John’s guide about Google News optimization.
In general, if there’s a demand for your content and it sends the right signals to Google, you’ll be driving Discover clicks from people already interested in that. That’s a huge benefit compared to social media, where posts mostly reach a “cold” audience.
How to drive Google Discover traffic
First of all, don’t spend too much time proactively trying to chase Discover clicks unless you’re already far along with your SEO efforts. Most people will be better off prioritizing standard organic traffic. News sites are the exception, but you already know that if you work for one.
Optimizing for Google Discover is an SEO topic that surpasses anything else in terms of uncertainty. The only available data is in your Google Search Console. You can’t analyze your competitors, and so the scale of your research is quite limited.
It’s hard to predict how a particular piece of content will perform in Discover. Speaking from our own experience in the B2B SaaS industry, you’ll most often see 3–5 day traffic spike upon publishing:
However, some evergreen content will manage to get constant traction:
And sometimes it might be a combination of both patterns:
However, some content might not even make it into the feed despite doing all the right things. As with almost everything in SEO, you can’t guarantee that X will do Y; it’s all about increasing your chances of a desirable outcome.
Luckily, there are a few official tips on increasing the likelihood of getting your content into Discover, which I cover below together with our unique insights. But first, know that indexed content needs to adhere to content policies to be eligible to appear in Discover. Only then should you focus on the following areas to increase the likelihood of being featured:
1. Have a mobile-friendly website
Discover is a mobile-only feed, so your site’s mobile experience is hugely important.
At the very least, you need a responsive, fast-loading website with limited or no ads, pop-ups, or interstitials. Also, be prepared for May 2021 when Core Web Vitals become a part of the ranking algorithm because Cumulative Layout Shift is not a page speed metric.
If you want to go a step further, consider using AMP. John estimates that more than 60% of all Discover articles are running on AMP. Of course, this number is heavily skewed by news websites, and SEO opinions on implementing it are mixed. But the Discover trend is clear:
2. Use unique high-quality images
Discover is yet another feed where the image gets the most attention, so you should use great high-quality images for all visual content on the page.
Google recommends that your large images should be at least 1200px wide and enabled by the max-image-preview: large robots meta tag or by using AMP. That should be your default setting regardless of Discover, as it’s the best practice for image SEO. Plugins like Yoast add this automatically.
You can also use the schema image property to provide more data to Google.
3. Align your content and metadata
Title tags and meta descriptions should summarize the page’s content and entice users to click. Just make sure not to use clickbait or other manipulative tactics here, as Google explicitly warns against these in the Discover guidelines.
An interesting thing we found out by mistake is that Google Discover takes Open Graph meta tags into account. We had a typo in one of our blog: title tags and it went through to the Discover feed despite the title tag being correct. There was a missing “L” at the beginning:
4. Publish content about popular topics
Discover tends to surface lots of timely content about current events, which is why news websites dominate the feed.
But it also surfaces plenty of evergreen content. Our blog is proof of that. We don’t write about trending topics, but we’re still getting tens of thousands of clicks from Discover each month.
This happens because Discover is a personalized feed and shows content that is new to you, not just new to the Web. For example, let’s say that you’re about to start investing in the stock market, which requires quite a bit of research. You’ll probably encounter articles in your Discover feed about investing tips, stockbroker comparisons, and other beginner stuff that could have been published months ago.
How do you target evergreen topics? It starts with keyword research. Just enter a few broad topics into a popular keyword research tool like Keywords Explorer, then look for popular topics.
Just know that merely writing about popular topics is rarely enough. Google says that you should focus on good copywriting and providing unique insights if you want to show up in Discover.
5. Work on your E‑A-T
Google says that the source content from websites with many pages that demonstrate expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness.
There are multiple ways to assess and support your E‑A-T. The Discover guidelines state that you should do the following:
Providing clear dates, bylines, information about authors, the publication, the publisher, company or network behind it, and contact information to better build trust and transparency with visitors.
On top of this, it might be worth using structured data to connect the dots.
Suganthan also suggests looking at Google’s Affinity categories and looking for topics where you can become an authority. That’s because these audiences seem to be linked to “CORE” interests card categories, as shown earlier from the logs.
The easiest way to find these is in the Affinity Categories report in Google Analytics.
In general, you should do everything you can to position your brand as a thought leader in your industry.
6. Focus on entities
When I analyzed the Discover performance of the Ahrefs blog, I managed to pinpoint topics that perform better than others. In the SEO world, it’s the entities and their connections that form specific topics.
Upon receiving the insights from our contributors, it was clear that entities play a significant role here as everyone mentioned them in one way or another.
There’s a Knowledge Graph layer created to map how user interests and expertise develop for any topic over time. This is known as the Topic Layer and is built by analyzing all content tied to a certain topic and all of its subtopics, ultimately connecting all the dots.
It seems that some of the dots can become Discover interests without being a Knowledge Graph entity. For example, querying “meta description” in Knowledge Graph API returns no results, but in Discover, it shows as an interest that you can follow:
You can’t dig into the Topic Layer, so we’ll have to focus on the higher-level entities. And that’s more than enough.
Your goal should be to have authority within the scope of entities that are tied to your business. There are multiple ways to approach this when you create content:
Be consistent in your category
Most websites are about something specific. It could be coffee, laptops, SEO, or something else entirely. Whatever it is for you, try not to deviate too far when creating content. If you’re publishing about iPhones one day and cooking tips the next, that doesn’t send positive signals to your audience or Google. It just waters down your ‘authority’ across all categories.
The only exception to this rule is if you work for a massive media outlet that covers everything.
Find the entities that work for your brand
I tried to spot topics that work best by manually going through our Discover reports. However, this method only covers main entities, and you can’t do it at scale.
If you already have many pages in Discover, you’re also likely to have access to developer resources. If that’s the case, you can do what John did: run your articles through Google’s Natural Language Tool, then combine the entities based on their salience and analyze which drove the most Discover traffic for you.
You can test the NLP API yourself. Just scroll down to the demo input window and paste some of your content there.
Use Google Images to find associated entities and information
Dan came up with an easy-to-use method to tell what other topics Google associates with a topic. Go to Google Images, search for your main keyword and then look at the related entity tags at the top:
Alternatively, you can use a tool like Entity Explorer that seems to get data using this same method.
Use this as inspiration for what to add to your current or upcoming content. Dan experienced increased Discover performance after incorporating related entities and information into his content. He also ranked for more keywords.
7. Become a Knowledge Graph entity
People can only follow your brand in Discover if it’s in the Knowledge Graph. You can check if this is the case by Googling your brand. If there’s a Knowledge Panel in the search results, it’s in the Knowledge Graph:
Interestingly, however, even if someone follows your brand, your content might not show up in their Discover feed. Kevin and I both tested this. I’ve been following MailChimp on Discover for a few months, and I’m yet to see any of their content in my feed.
So how does being a Knowledge Graph entity help improve your visibility in Discover?
Being in the Knowledge Graph is a sign that your online presence is strong enough for Google to put your brand in the right context. In other words, it understands what entities and interests are associated with your brand and may show your content to people interested in those things as a result.
8. Create buzz with your content distribution
It makes sense that Discover would want to showcase content with high engagement. We can confirm that posts with more Discover clicks also tend to have a comparatively high CTR in Discover.
What might be more surprising is that all of us have found that there seems to be a high correlation between social media engagement and your Discover performance.
John even crunched the numbers. He found the correlation coefficient between Discover performance and Twitter engagement in the US is a whopping 0.91. That’s a significantly high correlation, but as always, it doesn’t equal causation. Creating buzz with your content benefits you even if Google ignores it.
John also adds that this ‘buzz factor’ might be tied to Discover performance in certain countries. While Twitter plays a significant role in the US, it might be overshadowed by other platforms elsewhere. This means that you should distribute your content to locally popular channels.
At Ahrefs, we can see that this might indeed play a huge role in getting Discover clicks. We localize our blog content into five other languages. Those articles are essentially the same as our English ones that perform well, yet we only managed to get a few Discover clicks to some Spanish posts.
The only difference? We don’t focus on proper content distribution in other languages yet.
Again, none of this proves causation but Suganthan also brought up an experiment regarding the social engagement signal. JR Oakes made people engage with his tweet containing a deliberately rubbish article and it made it into the Discover feed:
9. Periodically refresh your content
Just because your page isn’t showing up in Discover now doesn’t mean it never will. Here’s an article that we first published in 2017 that never received a Discover click until we rewrote and republished it:

YouTube videos can be seen quite often in Discover feeds:
If you embed them into your content, there’s a chance that the videos will show up in Discover on their own and even outperform the content itself. And as Kevin points out, you don’t even need to use schema markup.
We have some articles that got only a few hundred clicks, but their embedded videos got thousands. We cover some of our topics in both video and written form so repurposing your content seems like a good tactic to boost traffic from Discover.
Just keep in mind that video clicks don’t go to your website but to YouTube instead.
11. Try Web Stories
Formerly known as AMP stories, these are Google’s take on the stories we know from Instagram and other social networks.
Google recently announced that they started supporting Web Stories in the Discover feed. If this type of content is something worth your time, try it out. At the time of writing, it’s only available for English content in the US.
Kevin confirmed that they tried experimenting with these Web Stories, and they indeed got featured in Discover.
Final thoughts
You can leverage Google Discover traffic regardless of your business. It won’t be a priority unless you have a news website, but the optimization tips are likely nothing you wouldn’t do in your everyday SEO work anyway.
Applying these tips won’t be beneficial just for Discover. That’s a by-product. They will lead to generally better SEO, content distribution, and traffic diversification.
The great thing about Google Discover is that it can drive clicks even when the primary keywords have no search demand. The general topic should still reflect people’s interests, but this is another argument in favor of publishing content that doesn’t primarily focus on driving search traffic.

A Complete Guide to Disavowing Bad Links
Easily one of the worst jobs in SEO is the link clean-up and disavow process. Removing links is one of those tasks that seems almost counter-intuitive and to make matters worse it’s caused by one of two situations:
Poor link building practices were performed at some point costing either energy or money, and now all that work needs further energy or money to undo, or
Someone (likely a competitor) is building bad links to the site in hopes that it will incur a penalty.
Knowing which of these two situations has occurred will significant speed up the process of dealing with the backlinks. Further, the difference between being preventative or reactive is also significant.
But first let’s answer a question many of you are likely thinking:
“I heard that with Penguin 4, Google doesn’t penalize links but just devalues those it doesn’t like. Why would I need a disavow file at all?”
Well here’s specifically what Google’s Gary Illyes from Google has written in response to the question from Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz on the topic:
So there’s two specific points here worth noting:
Manual actions are still in play and you can get hit with an unnatural links penalty.
There are other algorithms and algorithmic functions outside Penguin. While Penguin devalues spam rather than demoting the site there is no claim that spammy links won’t hurt you in these other areas.
John Mueller cleared things up a bit in a Hangout when he stated:
“So, I’d say the largest majority of the websites don’t need to do anything with the disavow. Because like you said, we were able to pick up the normal issues anyway and we can take care of that. And if you do know that your SEO in the past has done some shady things with links or previous SEO or someone else, then of course doing the disavow is a good way to to kind of make sure you could you can sleep at night and don’t have to worry that Google is maybe interpreting those links in a way that you didn’t want.

So – if you know you have link issues do a disavow. But how?
I’m going to warn readers that I’m not a huge fan of shortcuts in this area. I definitely love to use technology to its maximum potential in data collection but at this time I have not found any tool that I trust to do the analysis for me.
Why I warn readers of this is that this means following my advice won’t simply mean, “Run this tool and submit the file it outputs.”
No.
We’re going to pull data on back links and manually review them with only one exception. Let’s look at that first.
Situation 1: A Spammy Link Builder Has Built Known Spammy Links
This is an ideal situation: you or your client has paid a spammy link builder and that link builder has provided a list to your or your client as to where those links can be found.
In this case there’s no investigation necessary – disavow them all.
If this is where you’re at simply take the list and jump to Step Five below.
Situation 2: Negative SEO
Dealing with a negative SEO attack caught early is straightforward but more time consuming than Situation 1. You’ll know a negative attack by a backlink growth graph that looks something like:
The advantage to a link analysis under a negative attack is that there will be telltale signs that indicates when it occurred. It is this that eases the pain of dealing with it.
In the case of negative SEO, we don’t need to review every single link the site has ever acquired but rather just those links built during a particular time frame.
For instance, in the illustration above I’d want to look at everything from November 1, 2015 to the end of July 2016. That’s still a lot of links but a lot better than “all”.
Situation 3: Past Spam
The least fortunate scenario is faced when you know you have bad links but you’re not sure when they were built. If there’s no noticeable spike in backlinks as in the chart above and no reporting on link building but you can see those tell-tale bookmark and forum links, some crappy blog network links, etc. you’re faced with essentially having to perform a full backlink audit. That means pulling as much backlink data as you can and analyzing it all.
Now let’s step away from the cause of the links and take a brief look at what you’re really trying to address.
Manual Action, Algorithmic Slap, or Preventative Measures
There are basically three scenarios you may find yourself in that result in a backlink audit and disavow creation, each with an approach to go with it. They are:
1. Manual Action
If you find yourself with a notice in your Search Console that you got a manual action due to unnatural links, the approach is probably the most straightforward:
Burn everything and salt the earth.
In this scenario, anything that might even “kind” of look questionable, whether it’s legitimate or not, needs to be removed and that which can’t needs to be disavowed.
2. Algorithmic Slap
In this scenario a disavow will do (i.e., no need for a link removal) however the approach will be similar in regards to filtering the links.
Depending on the severity of the impact to your business you may wish to leave legitimate but questionable-looking links in the mix and remove them in a second round if the first fails.
In most cases, however, a full removal of anything that might even appear like spam is recommended.
3. Preventative
In this event, you aren’t looking for questionable links, just bad ones.
If anything appears in your backlink profile that could clearly be perceived as spam (scraper sites, negative SEO efforts, etc.) then they’ll be added to the disavow file but only those links that are specifically bad (and you’ll know them when you see them).
So, how do you prepare your lists and what do you do with them?
Step 1: Collect Your Data
The more backlink sources you have access to and the more filters those sources have, the better. The most obvious and universal backlink data source will be the Search Console.
If you are up against a time-based issue such as a negative SEO attack as referenced above, the “Download latest links” option is the most helpful as it includes the date that each link in the list was found. Downloading both provides a more robust list.
If you’re dealing with a non-time-based issue or are up against a penalty and need to be thorough, download both and start an Excel document of just the link URLs stripping out any other data.
On top of that I always download from at least two, if not more, additional backlink sources from among Ahrefs, Majestic, Moz, and a host of others.
If you have a penalty it’s worth investing in purchasing access if only for a month to make sure you’re being thorough. Google has said that if you have a manual action penalty the links causing it will be in the list you can download from them. I have personally experienced a case where I submitted a reconsideration request and had it denied with the sample link given being one not included in those downloads so don’t count on it.
When you’re downloading your data also pay close attention to the automatic filtering. Ahrefs, for example, groups similar links by default. If you’re doing a backlink audit, you want to see them all so be sure to select “All links”.
Download from all sources and add just the linking URLs to the previously made Excel document.
The next step is simply to click “Data” and then “Remove Duplicates.” You’ve pulled links from multiple sources and put them all together so you’re bound to have many. Once that’s done, copy the remaining links to a notepad document and save it somewhere handy.
Step 2: Process the Links
Hopefully, you don’t think I’d leave you to go through the links one-by-one. Now it’s time to download (if you don’t own it) URL Profiler. They have a 14-day free trial, so if you’re in a one-off scenario you may be able to get away with just using that.
When you launch URL Profiler, you’ll be presented with:
Which boxes you select will depend on the data you want and the services you subscribe to. You get 500 calls each of Moz and Majestic data per day but that increases with their paid subscriptions (even trials) if you have a lot of links to power through.
I tend to pull:
Domain-level Data

Moz
Ahrefs
Social Shares
Email Addresses (if dealing with a manual penalty)
Whois Emails  (if dealing with a manual penalty)
Site Type
IP Address
URL-level Data
Majestic
Moz
Ahrefs
HTTP Status

In the Link Analysis section, you will enter your domain. This will tell the software to look for links to your domain on the pages and pull data related to them. It would them look something like:
After that, just click “Run Profiler”. If you have a large backlink list and not a ton of RAM you’ll want to start this crawler right before heading home (perhaps for the weekend).
Once it’s finished you’ll be provided a spreadsheet with a large number of tabs. The software has attempted to grade the links for you and separate them into groups like so:
The first thing I tend to do is delete all the tabs but the “All” tab. I like to make my own decisions about something as important as my backlinks.
The “All” tab will contain a number of columns based on which fields you’ve elected to gather in your crawl. You’ll now want to remove all those that aren’t relevant to your specific needs.
You’ll want to consider the value of each yourself but 9 times out of 10 I’m left with:
URL – obviously important.
Server Country – can provide trustability signals.
IP Address – can assist in sorting which domains are grouped on the same servers (read: bad blog networks).
Domains On IP – can aid in grouping site that are on the same servers.
HTTP Status Code – used for filtering links from pages that don’t exist.
HTTP Status (if you don’t know your codes) – used for filtering links from pages that don’t exist.
Site Type – can provide trustability signals.
Link Status – used for filtering out links that no longer exist.
Link Score – can provide trustability signals. This is a URL Profiler metric and not perfect by any means but one additional way to sort data.
Target URL – good for sorting and understanding anchor text or penalty impact points.
Anchor Text – good for sorting and understanding anchor text or penalty impact points.
Link Type – good for sorting and can provide trustability signals.
Link Location – good for sorting and can provide trustability signals.
Rel Nofollow – important for filtering out nofollow links.
Domain Majestic CitationFlow – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Majestic TrustFlow – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Mozscape Domain Authority – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Mozscape Page Authority – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Mozscape MozRank – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Mozscape MozTrust – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Ahrefs Rank – can provide trustability signals.
Domain Ahrefs Backlinks – can provide trustability signals.

Step 3: Review the Links
Now that we’re down to a single “All” tab, it’s time to start putting those links into our own groups. Essentially step 1 of this stage is to eliminate any links that we don’t need to review.
The first three tabs I create and move links to are:
Tab “nopage” – The first step in this part of the process is to take out all the URLs that no longer exist. If you’re pulling full historic backlink data, this can be a huge number and that is why we left in the HTTP status. Sort by the code and if it’s not a 200 move it to the “nopage” tab. Worth noting – if you’re dealing with a penalty the software can give a non-200 code for pages that actually exist (rarely but it happens) so in that event you may want to pull out all the lines with a non-200 and re-run the tool for them for good measure but in most cases it’s not necessary.
Tab “nolink” – The next step is to sort the remaining data by the column “Link Status.” Move all the rows with “Not Found” in this column to the tab “nolink” as no link was found on that page. This generally means the link was removed at some point in time. Again, if you’re including older data, this can be significant.
Tab “nofollow” – Finally (for this stage) we sort by the “Rel Nofollow” column and move all the data with a “yes” over into the “nofollow” tab. As a nofollow link won’t be delivering a penalty it’s good to remove them so you’re not wasting time reviewing them. If you feel uncomfortable with this step and want to review your nofollow links you are welcome to. However, of all the link issues I’ve repaired I’ve never had a manual reconsideration denied or algorithmic penalty maintained based on the presence of nofollow links.
After this is done, it’s time to manually review the links.
I can’t cover every possible way to sort the links as that depends a lot on the issue you’re facing and the types of links you’re looking for. However, there are some tricks that dramatically speed up the process of going through them.
Here are some core techniques:
Sort the links by Domain Authority and move all the links from sites with a 30 or more into their own tab. Then sort this data by Ahrefs Rank or Majectic Citation Flow and pull all the links with a 30 or above into yet another tab. Those with a Domain Authority above 30 but a secondary rating below 30 should be moved back to your “All” tab for further investigation. You can now go through the newly created 30+/30+ tab of data knowing two sources rate the link decently well. With these, I tend to sort them by anchor text, Target URL, and perhaps one or two more columns like total shares. Scan quickly for obvious problems and you may find a few which you’ll move to a “disavow” tab but for the most part these should prove fine. You can now rename this tab “good” and move any new good link there.
Sort the links by Domains on IP, Then IP and then by URL. Doing this will quickly group together links from sites on the same IP address and help you quickly isolate poorly setup blog networks and other similar issues. Take any of those out and put them in your “disavow” tab.
Sort the links by Site Type and then by one of the quality metrics like DA. This will allow you to quickly sort the different types of links (blog, article, directory, etc.) and order by likely weight. You can then scan the domains which can often be a dead giveaway to move them to a disavow, anchor text, etc. or just visit the pages if necessary. Even if you have to visit them – knowing the site type will group together what you’re about to have to sort through and making digesting the data far faster.
Sort by target URL and then anchor text. Sorting your links in this manner groups the pages together and makes obvious any anchor text spam directed at any one of them. You may want to be careful here as some may be legitimate but again – you’ll know specifically what you’re looking for when you visit each one or at least the ones that aren’t obviously spam.
There are endless other sorting techniques but each situation is unique.
Simply consider what metrics make sense for the sites linking to you to have.
Should they have a lot of social shares? Then sort by that.
Should they be on sites with a lot of backlinks? Then sort by that or use that as a reinforcement metric like one might with DA or TrustRank.
Once you’ve moved all the links into tabs – you’ve got your good links in one tab and your disavow links in another – it’s time to go to step four if you’re dealing with a manual penalty or step five if you’re not.
Step 4: Request the Links Be Removed
With a manual action it’s important to really show that you’ve put in the work to remedy the situation. You will want to send three (that’s right … three) separate link removal requests. This will be a fairly nicely worded letter to the domain owner of the site your link is on (why we included those emails in our URL Profiler crawl above), simply noting the issue you’re dealing with and asking that they kindly remove the link so you don’t have to include them in the disavow file.
They may request a payment. If the fee is small I don’t view it as extortion, I view it as compensation for their time.
The webmaster now needs to do something for you that you or someone working for you may have requested they do in the first place. I charge for my time so I don’t blame them. If they want $5 or $10 to remove the link go for it – anything more than that I tend not to and just include them in the disavow list.
Clearly document the dates the emails were sent out. You can use email software or send them out one-by-one… that really doesn’t matter. They should be spaced out by about one to two weeks allowing time for reply.
A week after the third is sent out, you can run all the linking URLs from your “disavow” tab through the URL Profiler again, though this time, you just need to enter your domain and look for the links that remain.
Step 5: Create Your Disavow File
You can go one of two routes on this – disavow the links or the domains. I lean toward disavowing the domains just in case some tag page of a blog didn’t show up in the crawls yet but the link is there.
If you only disavow the URLs this link would still get counted. If you want to quickly and easily turn your list of links from your disavow tab into a list of domains simply follow these steps:
Copy all the linking pages into a notepad.
Find and replace http:// with nothing (to remove it).
Find and replace https:// with noting (to remove it).
Find and replace www. with noting (to remove it).
Find and replace / with , (changing slashes to commas).
Save this to your desktop as working.csv.
Open the file with Excel.
You’ll find the entire first column is now just your domains.
Paste the entire column into a new tab in the B column.
To eliminate any duplication go to Data and “Remove Duplicates.”
Fill the entire column A with “domain:”.
Copy columns A and B to a new notepad doc.
Find and replace a space with nothing (to remove empty space).
Basically now you’ve got your disavow file ready. All that’s left is to add something to the first row that reads something like:
#The following domains were found in either Search Console, Ahrefs, Majestic SEO, and/or Moz. All the domains below have or do currently link to the mydomain.com domain but are undesirable. Those that still link were contacted on July 21, 2017, August 7, 2017, and August 14, 2017 with a request to remove them but have not.
(The last sentence is really only necessary if you’re up against a manual action.)
Step 6: Submit Your Disavow File
The only remaining step is to submit the disavow file you’ve just created. Doing so is done via the Search Console but Google keeps it outside the links in the system because it’s a dangerous tool to play with if you don’t know what you’re doing.
You’ll find the disavow submission page here.
If you have a manual action you will also need to create a reconsideration request. This is basically a document where you get to outline specifically what happened (be honest – they already know) and ask (beg?) for forgiveness.
Here’s a basic copy of one I have used that worked successfully and is A-typical of the ones I have found work:
On June 1, 2017 mydomain.com received an unnatural links notice.
Our first step was to go through the arduous process of sending out link removal requests.
To this end, we pulled backlink data from Search Console, Moz, Ahrefs, and Majestic.  We filtered and reviewed all these links which left us with 22,251 links to address from 1,209 domains. After three full rounds of link removals we have been left with 2,344 links from 570 domains.
We have left all the domains on the disavow list to make sure they are purged from Google’s side prior to being removed from ours.The sample list we were given as examples makes great sense. They were:

So That’s How You Do It
So that’s how to successfully analyze your backlinks as quickly as possible while remaining accurate and creating and submitting a disavow file.
It can be a painfully slow process. I know – I’ve had to do them for sites that had literally millions of links, but if I look at the cost of a week’s worth of work (about what that job took) vs the cost of getting or keeping a penalty… a great payoff and few of us have that kind of link volume.
If you’re lucky, you may never need to create a disavow file and if you catch a negative SEO attack early, you’ll likely have some easy links to sort through. But even in the worst of cases, if done in an organized and logical fashion, the process can go quickly, smoothly and – most importantly – effectively.

How to Read Google Algorithm Updates
Links = Rank
Old Google (pre-Panda) was to some degree largely the following: links = rank.

Any signal which gets relied on eventually gets abused intentionally or unintentionally. And over time it leads to a "sameness" of the result set unless other signals are used:

Getting More Granular

So much of the link graph has been decimated that Google reversed their stance on nofollow to where in March 1st of this year they started treating it as a hint versus a directive for ranking purposes. Many mainstream media websites were overusing nofollow or not citing sources at all, so this additional layer of obfuscation on Google's part will allow them to find more signal in that noise.

A blog post by Lily Ray from Path Interactive used Sistrix data to show many of the sites which saw high volatility were in the healthcare vertical & other your money, your life (YMYL) categories.
Aggressive Monetization
One of the more interesting pieces of feedback on the update was from Rank Ranger, where they looked at particular pages that jumped or fell hard on the update. They noticed sites that put ads or ad-like content front and center may have seen sharp falls on some of those big money pages which were aggressively monetized:
Seeing this all but cements the notion (in my mind at least) that Google did not want content unrelated to the main purpose of the page to appear above the fold to the exclusion of the page's main content! Now for the second wrinkle in my theory.... A lot of the pages being swapped out for new ones did not use the above-indicated format where a series of "navigation boxes" dominated the page above the fold.
The above shift had a big impact on some sites which are worth serious money. Intuit paid over $7 billion to acquire Credit Karma, but their credit card affiliate pages recently slid hard.

The above sort of shift reflects Google getting more granular with their algorithms. Early Panda was all or nothing. Then it started to have different levels of impact throughout different portions of a site.
Brand was sort of a band aid or a rising tide that lifted all (branded) boats. Now we are seeing Google get more granular with their algorithms where a strong brand might not be enough if they view the monetization as being excessive. That same focus on page layout can have a more adverse impact on small niche websites.
One of my old legacy clients had a site which was primarily monetized by the Amazon affiliate program. About a month ago Amazon chopped affiliate commissions in half & then the aggressive ad placement caused search traffic to the site to get chopped in half when rankings slid on this update.
Their site has been trending down over the past couple years largely due to neglect as it was always a small side project. They recently improved some of the content about a month or so ago and that ended up leading to a bit of a boost, but then this update came. As long as that ad placement doesn't change the declines are likely to continue.
They just recently removed that ad unit, but that meant another drop in income as until there is another big algo update they're likely to stay at around half search traffic. So now they have a half of a half of a half. Good thing the site did not have any full time employees or they'd be among the millions of newly unemployed. That experience though really reflects how websites can be almost like debt levered companies in terms of going under virtually overnight. Who can have revenue slide around 88% and then take increase investment in the property using the remaining 12% while they wait for the site to be rescored for a quarter year or more?
"If you have been negatively impacted by a core update, you (mostly) cannot see recovery from that until another core update. In addition, you will only see recovery if you significantly improve the site over the long-term. If you haven’t done enough to improve the site overall, you might have to wait several updates to see an increase as you keep improving the site. And since core updates are typically separated by 3-4 months, that means you might need to wait a while."
Almost nobody can afford to do that unless the site is just a side project.
Google could choose to run major updates more frequently, allowing sites to recover more quickly, but they gain economic benefit in defunding SEO investments & adding opportunity cost to aggressive SEO strategies by ensuring ranking declines on major updates last a season or more.
Choosing a Strategy vs Letting Things Come at You
They probably should have lowered their ad density when they did those other upgrades. If they had they likely would have seen rankings at worst flat or likely up as some other competing sites fell. Instead they are rolling with a half of a half of a half on the revenue front. Glenn Gabe preaches the importance of fixing all the problems you can find rather than just fixing one or two things and hoping it is enough. If you have a site which is on the edge you sort of have to consider the trade offs between various approaches to monetization.
monetize it lightly and hope the site does well for many years
monetize it slightly aggressively while using the extra income to further improve the site elsewhere and ensure you have enough to get by any lean months
aggressively monetize the shortly after a major ranking update if it was previously lightly monetized & then hope to sell it off a month or two later before the next major algorithm update clips it again
Outcomes will depend partly on timing and luck, but consciously choosing a strategy is likely to yield better returns than doing a bit of mix-n-match while having your head buried in the sand.
Reading the Algo Updates
You can spend 50 or 100 hours reading blog posts about the update and learn precisely nothing in the process if you do not know which authors are bullshitting and which authors are writing about the correct signals.
But how do you know who knows what they are talking about?
It is more than a bit tricky as the people who know the most often do not have any economic advantage in writing specifics about the update. If you primarily monetize your own websites, then the ignorance of the broader market is a big part of your competitive advantage.
Making things even trickier, the less you know the more likely Google would be to trust you with sending official messaging through you. If you syndicate their messaging without questioning it, you get a treat - more exclusives. If you question their messaging in a way that undermines their goals, you'd quickly become persona non grata - something cNet learned many years ago when they published Eric Schmidt's address.
It would be unlikely you'd see the following sort of Tweet from say Blue Hat SEO or Fantomaster or such.

To be able to read the algorithms well you have to have some market sectors and keyword groups you know well. Passively collecting an archive of historical data makes the big changes stand out quickly. Everyone who depends on SEO to make a living should subscribe to an online rank tracking service or run something like Serposcope locally to track at least a dozen or two dozen keywords. If you track rankings locally it makes sense to use a set of web proxies and run the queries slowly through each so you don't get blocked.
Once you see outliers most people miss that align with what you see in a data set, your level of confidence increases and you can spend more time trying to unravel what signals changed.
I've read influential industry writers mention that links were heavily discounted on this update. I have also read Tweets like this one which could potentially indicate the opposite.

If I had little to no data, I wouldn't be able to get any signal out of that range of opinions. I'd sort of be stuck at "who knows."
By having my own data I track I can quickly figure out which message is more inline with what I saw in my subset of data & form a more solid hypothesis.
No Single Smoking Gun
As Glenn Gabe is fond of saying, sites that tank usually have multiple major issues.
Google rolls out major updates infrequently enough that they can sandwich a couple different aspects into major updates at the same time in order to make it harder to reverse engineer updates. So it does help to read widely with an open mind and imagine what signal shifts could cause the sorts of ranking shifts you are seeing.
Sometimes site level data is more than enough to figure out what changed, but as the above Credit Karma example showed sometimes you need to get far more granular and look at page-level data to form a solid hypothesis.
As the World Changes, the Web Also Changes
About 15 years ago online dating was seen as a weird niche for recluses who perhaps typically repulsed real people in person. Now there are all sorts of niche specialty dating sites including a variety of DTF type apps. What was once weird & absurd had over time become normal.
The COVID-19 scare is going to cause lasting shifts in consumer behavior that accelerate the movement of commerce online. A decade of change will happen in a year or two across many markets.
Telemedicine will grow quickly. Facebook is adding commerce featured directly onto their platform through partnering with Shopify. Spotify is spending big money to buy exclusives rights to distribute widely followed podcasters like Joe Rogan. Uber recently offered to acquire GrubHub. Google and Apple will continue adding financing features to their mobile devices. Movie theaters have lost much of their appeal.
Tons of offline "value" businesses ended up having no value after months of revenue disappearing while large outstanding debts accumulated interest. There is a belief that some of those brands will have strong latent brand value that carries over online, but if they were weak even when the offline stores acting like interactive billboards subsidized consumer awareness of their brands then as those stores close the consumer awareness & loyalty from in-person interactions will also dry up. A shell of a company rebuilt around the Toys R' Us brand is unlikely to beat out Amazon's parallel offering or a company which still runs stores offline.
Big box retailers like Target & Walmart are growing their online sales at hundreds of percent year over year.
There will be waves of bankruptcies, shifts in commercial real estate prices, more people working remotely (shifting residential real estate demand from the urban core back out into suburbs).
More and more activities will become normal online activities.
The University of California has about a half-million students & in the fall semester they are going to try to have most of those classes happen online. How much usage data does Google gain as thousands of institutions put more and more of their infrastructure and service online?

Google Florida 2.0 Algorithm Update: Early Observations
It has been a while since Google has had a major algorithm update.
They recently announced one which began on the 12th of March.

What changed?
It appears multiple things did.
When Google rolled out the original version of Penguin on April 24, 2012 (primarily focused on link spam) they also rolled out an update to an on-page spam classifier for misdirection.
And, over time, it was quite common for Panda & Penguin updates to be sandwiched together.
If you were Google & had the ability to look under the hood to see why things changed, you would probably want to obfuscate any major update by changing multiple things at once to make reverse engineering the change much harder.
Anyone who operates a single website (& lacks the ability to look under the hood) will have almost no clue about what changed or how to adjust with the algorithms.
In the most recent algorithm update some sites which were penalized in prior “quality” updates have recovered.
Though many of those recoveries are only partial.
Many SEO blogs will publish articles about how they cracked the code on the latest update by publishing charts like the first one without publishing that second chart showing the broader context.
The first penalty any website receives might be the first of a series of penalties.
If Google smokes your site & it does not cause a PR incident & nobody really cares that you are gone, then there is a very good chance things will go from bad to worse to worser to worsterest, technically speaking.

Absent effort & investment to evolve FASTER than the broader web, sites which are hit with one penalty will often further accumulate other penalties. It is like compound interest working in reverse – a pile of algorithmic debt which must be dug out of before the bleeding stops.
Further, many recoveries may be nothing more than a fleeting invitation to false hope. To pour more resources into a site that is struggling in an apparent death loop.
The above site which had its first positive algorithmic response in a couple years achieved that in part by heavily de-monetizing. After the algorithm updates already demonetized the website over 90%, what harm was there in removing 90% of what remained to see how it would react? So now it will get more traffic (at least for a while) but then what exactly is the traffic worth to a site that has no revenue engine tied to it?
That is ultimately the hard part. Obtaining a stable stream of traffic while monetizing at a decent yield, without the monetizing efforts leading to the traffic disappearing.
A buddy who owns the above site was working on link cleanup & content improvement on & off for about a half year with no results. Each month was a little worse than the prior month. It was only after I told him to remove the aggressive ads a few months back that he likely had any chance of seeing any sort of traffic recovery. Now he at least has a pulse of traffic & can look into lighter touch means of monetization.
If a site is consistently penalized then the problem might not be an algorithmic false positive, but rather the business model of the site.
The more something looks like eHow the more fickle Google’s algorithmic with receive it.
Google does not like websites that sit at the end of the value chain & extract profits without having to bear far greater risk & expense earlier into the cycle.
Thin rewrites, largely speaking, don’t add value to the ecosystem. Doorway pages don’t either. And something that was propped up by a bunch of keyword-rich low-quality links is (in most cases) probably genuinely lacking in some other aspect.
Generally speaking, Google would like themselves to be the entity at the end of the value chain extracting excess profits from markets.

This is the purpose of the knowledge graph & featured snippets. To allow the results to answer the most basic queries without third party publishers getting anything. The knowledge graph serve as a floating vertical that eat an increasing share of the value chain & force publishers to move higher up the funnel & publish more differentiated content.
As Google adds features to the search results (flight price trends, a hotel booking service on the day AirBNB announced they acquired HotelTonight, ecommerce product purchase on Google, shoppable image ads just ahead of the Pinterest IPO, etc.) it forces other players in the value chain to consolidate (Expedia owns Orbitz, Travelocity, Hotwire & a bunch of other sites) or add greater value to remain a differentiated & sought after destination (travel review site TripAdvisor was crushed by the shift to mobile & the inability to monetize mobile traffic, so they eventually had to shift away from being exclusively a reviews site to offer event & hotel booking features to remain relevant).
It is never easy changing a successful & profitable business model, but it is even harder to intentionally reduce revenues further or spend aggressively to improve quality AFTER income has fallen 50% or more.
Some people do the opposite & make up for a revenue shortfall by publishing more lower end content at an ever faster rate and/or increasing ad load. Either of which typically makes their user engagement metrics worse while making their site less differentiated & more likely to receive additional bonus penalties to drive traffic even lower.
In some ways I think the ability for a site to survive & remain though a penalty is itself a quality signal for Google.
Some sites which are overly reliant on search & have no external sources of traffic are ultimately sites which tried to behave too similarly to the monopoly that ultimately displaced them. And over time the tech monopolies are growing more powerful as the ecosystem around them burns down:
If you had to choose a date for when the internet died, it would be in the year 2014. Before then, traffic to websites came from many sources, and the web was a lively ecosystem. But beginning in 2014, more than half of all traffic began coming from just two sources: Facebook and Google. Today, over 70 percent of traffic is dominated by those two platforms.
Businesses which have sustainable profit margins & slack (in terms of management time & resources to deploy) can better cope with algorithmic changes & change with the market.
Over the past half decade or so there have been multiple changes that drastically shifted the online publishing landscape:
the shift to mobile, which both offers publishers lower ad yields while making the central ad networks more ad heavy in a way that reduces traffic to third party sites
the rise of the knowledge graph & featured snippets which often mean publishers remain uncompensated for their work
higher ad loads which also lower organic reach (on both search & social channels)
the rise of programmatic advertising, which further gutted display ad CPMs
the rise of ad blockers
increasing algorithmic uncertainty & a higher barrier to entry
Each one of the above could take a double digit percent out of a site’s revenues, particularly if a site was reliant on display ads. Add them together and a website which was not even algorithmically penalized could still see a 60%+ decline in revenues. Mix in a penalty and that decline can chop a zero or two off the total revenues.
Businesses with lower margins can try to offset declines with increased ad spending, but that only works if you are not in a market with 2 & 20 VC fueled competition:
Startups spend almost 40 cents of every VC dollar on Google, Facebook, and Amazon. We don’t necessarily know which channels they will choose or the particularities of how they will spend money on user acquisition, but we do know more or less what’s going to happen. Advertising spend in tech has become an arms race: fresh tactics go stale in months, and customer acquisition costs keep rising. In a world where only one company thinks this way, or where one business is executing at a level above everyone else – like Facebook in its time – this tactic is extremely effective. However, when everyone is acting this way, the industry collectively becomes an accelerating treadmill. Ad impressions and click-throughs get bid up to outrageous prices by startups flush with venture money, and prospective users demand more and more subsidized products to gain their initial attention. The dynamics we’ve entered is, in many ways, creating a dangerous, high stakes Ponzi scheme.
And sometimes the platform claws back a second or third bite of the apple. Amazon.com charges merchants for fulfillment, warehousing, transaction based fees, etc. And they’ve pushed hard into launching hundreds of private label brands which pollute the interface & force brands to buy ads even on their own branded keyword terms.
They’ve recently jumped the shark by adding a bonus feature where even when a brand paid Amazon to send traffic to their listing, Amazon would insert a spam popover offering a cheaper private label branded product:
Amazon.com tested a pop-up feature on its app that in some instances pitched its private-label goods on rivals’ product pages, an experiment that shows the e-commerce giant’s aggressiveness in hawking lower-priced products including its own house brands. The recent experiment, conducted in Amazon’s mobile app, went a step further than the display ads that commonly appear within search results and product pages. This test pushed pop-up windows that took over much of a product page, forcing customers to either click through to the lower-cost Amazon products or dismiss them before continuing to shop. … When a customer using Amazon’s mobile app searched for “AAA batteries,” for example, the first link was a sponsored listing from Energizer Holdings Inc. After clicking on the listing, a pop-up window appeared, offering less expensive AmazonBasics AAA batteries.”
Buying those Amazon ads was quite literally subsidizing a direct competitor pushing you into irrelevance.
And while Amazon is destroying brand equity, AWS is doing investor relations matchmaking for startups. Anything to keep the current bubble going ahead of the Uber IPO that will likely mark the top in the stock market.

As the market caps of big tech companies climb they need to be more predatious to grow into the valuations & retain employees with stock options at an ever-increasing strike price.
They’ve created bubbles in their own backyards where each raise requires another. Teachers either drive hours to work or live in houses subsidized by loans from the tech monopolies that get a piece of the upside (provided they can keep their own bubbles inflated).
“It is an uncommon arrangement — employer as landlord — that is starting to catch on elsewhere as school employees say they cannot afford to live comfortably in regions awash in tech dollars. … Holly Gonzalez, 34, a kindergarten teacher in East San Jose, and her husband, Daniel, a school district I.T. specialist, were able to buy a three-bedroom apartment for $610,000 this summer with help from their parents and from Landed. When they sell the home, they will owe Landed 25 percent of any gain in its value. The company is financed partly by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Mark Zuckerberg’s charitable arm.”
The above sort of dynamics have some claiming peak California:
The cycle further benefits from the Alchian-Allen effect: agglomerating industries have higher productivity, which raises the cost of living and prices out other industries, raising concentration over time. … Since startups raise the variance within whatever industry they’re started in, the natural constituency for them is someone who doesn’t have capital deployed in the industry. If you’re an asset owner, you want low volatility. … Historically, startups have created a constant supply of volatility for tech companies; the next generation is always cannibalizing the previous one. So chip companies in the 1970s created the PC companies of the 80s, but PC companies sourced cheaper and cheaper chips, commoditizing the product until Intel managed to fight back. Meanwhile, the OS turned PCs into a commodity, then search engines and social media turned the OS into a commodity, and presumably this process will continue indefinitely. … As long as higher rents raise the cost of starting a pre-revenue company, fewer people will join them, so more people will join established companies, where they’ll earn market salaries and continue to push up rents. And one of the things they’ll do there is optimize ad loads, which places another tax on startups. More dangerously, this is an incremental tax on growth rather than a fixed tax on headcount, so it puts pressure on out-year valuations, not just upfront cash flow.
If you live hundreds of miles away the tech companies may have no impact on your rental or purchase price, but you can’t really control the algorithms or the ecosystem.
All you can really control is your mindset & ensuring you have optionality baked into your business model.
If you are debt-levered you have little to no optionality. Savings give you optionality. Savings allow you to run at a loss for a period of time while also investing in improving your site and perhaps having a few other sites in other markets.
If you operate a single website that is heavily reliant on a third party for distribution then you have little to no optionality. If you have multiple projects that enables you to shift your attention toward working on whatever is going up and to the right while letting anything that is failing pass time without becoming overly reliant on something you can’t change. This is why it often makes sense for a brand merchant to operate their own ecommerce website even if 90% of their sales come from Amazon. It gives you optionality should the tech monopoly become abusive or otherwise harm you (even if the intent was benign rather than outright misanthropic).
As the update ensues Google will collect more data with how users interact with the result set & determine how to weight different signals, along with re-scoring sites that recovered based on the new engagement data.
Recently a Bing engineer named Frédéric Dubut described how they score relevancy signals used in updates
As early as 2005, we used neural networks to power our search engine and you can still find rare pictures of Satya Nadella, VP of Search and Advertising at the time, showcasing our web ranking advances. … The “training” process of a machine learning model is generally iterative (and all automated). At each step, the model is tweaking the weight of each feature in the direction where it expects to decrease the error the most. After each step, the algorithm remeasures the rating of all the SERPs (based on the known URL/query pair ratings) to evaluate how it’s doing. Rinse and repeat.
That same process is ongoing with Google now & in the coming weeks there’ll be the next phase of the current update.
So far it looks like some quality-based re-scoring was done & some sites which were overly reliant on anchor text got clipped. On the back end of the update there’ll be another quality-based re-scoring, but the sites that were hit for excessive manipulation of anchor text via link building efforts will likely remain penalized for a good chunk of time.

As the update ensues Google will collect more data with how users interact with the result set & determine how to weight different signals, along with re-scoring sites that recovered based on the new engagement data.
Recently a Bing engineer named Frédéric Dubut described how they score relevancy signals used in updates
As early as 2005, we used neural networks to power our search engine and you can still find rare pictures of Satya Nadella, VP of Search and Advertising at the time, showcasing our web ranking advances. … The “training” process of a machine learning model is generally iterative (and all automated). At each step, the model is tweaking the weight of each feature in the direction where it expects to decrease the error the most. After each step, the algorithm remeasures the rating of all the SERPs (based on the known URL/query pair ratings) to evaluate how it’s doing. Rinse and repeat.
That same process is ongoing with Google now & in the coming weeks there’ll be the next phase of the current update.
So far it looks like some quality-based re-scoring was done & some sites which were overly reliant on anchor text got clipped. On the back end of the update there’ll be another quality-based re-scoring, but the sites that were hit for excessive manipulation of anchor text via link building efforts will likely remain penalized for a good chunk of time.

Google Florida 2.0 Algorithm Update: Early Observations
It has been a while since Google has had a major algorithm update.
They recently announced one which began on the 12th of March.

What changed?
It appears multiple things did.
When Google rolled out the original version of Penguin on April 24, 2012 (primarily focused on link spam) they also rolled out an update to an on-page spam classifier for misdirection.
And, over time, it was quite common for Panda & Penguin updates to be sandwiched together.
If you were Google & had the ability to look under the hood to see why things changed, you would probably want to obfuscate any major update by changing multiple things at once to make reverse engineering the change much harder.
Anyone who operates a single website (& lacks the ability to look under the hood) will have almost no clue about what changed or how to adjust with the algorithms.
In the most recent algorithm update some sites which were penalized in prior "quality" updates have recovered.
Though many of those recoveries are only partial.
Many SEO blogs will publish articles about how they cracked the code on the latest update by publishing charts like the first one without publishing that second chart showing the broader context.
The first penalty any website receives might be the first of a series of penalties.
If Google smokes your site & it does not cause a PR incident & nobody really cares that you are gone, then there is a very good chance things will go from bad to worse to worser to worsterest, technically speaking.

Absent effort & investment to evolve FASTER than the broader web, sites which are hit with one penalty will often further accumulate other penalties. It is like compound interest working in reverse - a pile of algorithmic debt which must be dug out of before the bleeding stops.
Further, many recoveries may be nothing more than a fleeting invitation to false hope. To pour more resources into a site that is struggling in an apparent death loop.
The above site which had its first positive algorithmic response in a couple years achieved that in part by heavily de-monetizing. After the algorithm updates already demonetized the website over 90%, what harm was there in removing 90% of what remained to see how it would react? So now it will get more traffic (at least for a while) but then what exactly is the traffic worth to a site that has no revenue engine tied to it?
That is ultimately the hard part. Obtaining a stable stream of traffic while monetizing at a decent yield, without the monetizing efforts leading to the traffic disappearing.
A buddy who owns the above site was working on link cleanup & content improvement on & off for about a half year with no results. Each month was a little worse than the prior month. It was only after I told him to remove the aggressive ads a few months back that he likely had any chance of seeing any sort of traffic recovery. Now he at least has a pulse of traffic & can look into lighter touch means of monetization.
If a site is consistently penalized then the problem might not be an algorithmic false positive, but rather the business model of the site.
The more something looks like eHow the more fickle Google's algorithmic with receive it.
Google does not like websites that sit at the end of the value chain & extract profits without having to bear far greater risk & expense earlier into the cycle.
Thin rewrites, largely speaking, don't add value to the ecosystem. Doorway pages don't either. And something that was propped up by a bunch of keyword-rich low-quality links is (in most cases) probably genuinely lacking in some other aspect.
Generally speaking, Google would like themselves to be the entity at the end of the value chain extracting excess profits from markets.
This is the purpose of the knowledge graph & featured snippets. To allow the results to answer the most basic queries without third party publishers getting anything. The knowledge graph serve as a floating vertical that eat an increasing share of the value chain & force publishers to move higher up the funnel & publish more differentiated content.
As Google adds features to the search results (flight price trends, a hotel booking service on the day AirBNB announced they acquired HotelTonight, ecommerce product purchase on Google, shoppable image ads just ahead of the Pinterest IPO, etc.) it forces other players in the value chain to consolidate (Expedia owns Orbitz, Travelocity, Hotwire & a bunch of other sites) or add greater value to remain a differentiated & sought after destination (travel review site TripAdvisor was crushed by the shift to mobile & the inability to monetize mobile traffic, so they eventually had to shift away from being exclusively a reviews site to offer event & hotel booking features to remain relevant).
It is never easy changing a successful & profitable business model, but it is even harder to intentionally reduce revenues further or spend aggressively to improve quality AFTER income has fallen 50% or more.
Some people do the opposite & make up for a revenue shortfall by publishing more lower end content at an ever faster rate and/or increasing ad load. Either of which typically makes their user engagement metrics worse while making their site less differentiated & more likely to receive additional bonus penalties to drive traffic even lower.
In some ways I think the ability for a site to survive & remain though a penalty is itself a quality signal for Google.
Some sites which are overly reliant on search & have no external sources of traffic are ultimately sites which tried to behave too similarly to the monopoly that ultimately displaced them. And over time the tech monopolies are growing more powerful as the ecosystem around them burns down:
If you had to choose a date for when the internet died, it would be in the year 2014. Before then, traffic to websites came from many sources, and the web was a lively ecosystem. But beginning in 2014, more than half of all traffic began coming from just two sources: Facebook and Google. Today, over 70 percent of traffic is dominated by those two platforms.
Businesses which have sustainable profit margins & slack (in terms of management time & resources to deploy) can better cope with algorithmic changes & change with the market.
Over the past half decade or so there have been multiple changes that drastically shifted the online publishing landscape:
the shift to mobile, which both offers publishers lower ad yields while making the central ad networks more ad heavy in a way that reduces traffic to third party sites
the rise of the knowledge graph & featured snippets which often mean publishers remain uncompensated for their work
higher ad loads which also lower organic reach (on both search & social channels)
the rise of programmatic advertising, which further gutted display ad CPMs
the rise of ad blockers
increasing algorithmic uncertainty & a higher barrier to entry
Each one of the above could take a double digit percent out of a site's revenues, particularly if a site was reliant on display ads. Add them together and a website which was not even algorithmically penalized could still see a 60%+ decline in revenues. Mix in a penalty and that decline can chop a zero or two off the total revenues.
Businesses with lower margins can try to offset declines with increased ad spending, but that only works if you are not in a market with 2 & 20 VC fueled competition:
Startups spend almost 40 cents of every VC dollar on Google, Facebook, and Amazon. We don’t necessarily know which channels they will choose or the particularities of how they will spend money on user acquisition, but we do know more or less what’s going to happen. Advertising spend in tech has become an arms race: fresh tactics go stale in months, and customer acquisition costs keep rising. In a world where only one company thinks this way, or where one business is executing at a level above everyone else - like Facebook in its time - this tactic is extremely effective. However, when everyone is acting this way, the industry collectively becomes an accelerating treadmill. Ad impressions and click-throughs get bid up to outrageous prices by startups flush with venture money, and prospective users demand more and more subsidized products to gain their initial attention. The dynamics we’ve entered is, in many ways, creating a dangerous, high stakes Ponzi scheme.
And sometimes the platform claws back a second or third bite of the apple. Amazon.com charges merchants for fulfillment, warehousing, transaction based fees, etc. And they've pushed hard into launching hundreds of private label brands which pollute the interface & force brands to buy ads even on their own branded keyword terms.
They've recently jumped the shark by adding a bonus feature where even when a brand paid Amazon to send traffic to their listing, Amazon would insert a spam popover offering a cheaper private label branded product:
Amazon.com tested a pop-up feature on its app that in some instances pitched its private-label goods on rivals’ product pages, an experiment that shows the e-commerce giant’s aggressiveness in hawking lower-priced products including its own house brands. The recent experiment, conducted in Amazon’s mobile app, went a step further than the display ads that commonly appear within search results and product pages. This test pushed pop-up windows that took over much of a product page, forcing customers to either click through to the lower-cost Amazon products or dismiss them before continuing to shop. ... When a customer using Amazon’s mobile app searched for “AAA batteries,” for example, the first link was a sponsored listing from Energizer Holdings Inc. After clicking on the listing, a pop-up window appeared, offering less expensive AmazonBasics AAA batteries."
Buying those Amazon ads was quite literally subsidizing a direct competitor pushing you into irrelevance.
As the market caps of big tech companies climb they need to be more predatious to grow into the valuations & retain employees with stock options at an ever-increasing price.
They've created bubbles in their own backyards where each raise requires another. Teachers either drive hours to work or live in houses subsidized by loans from the tech monopolies that get a piece of the upside (provided they can keep their own bubbles inflated).
"It is an uncommon arrangement — employer as landlord — that is starting to catch on elsewhere as school employees say they cannot afford to live comfortably in regions awash in tech dollars. ... Holly Gonzalez, 34, a kindergarten teacher in East San Jose, and her husband, Daniel, a school district I.T. specialist, were able to buy a three-bedroom apartment for $610,000 this summer with help from their parents and from Landed. When they sell the home, they will owe Landed 25 percent of any gain in its value. The company is financed partly by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Mark Zuckerberg’s charitable arm."
The above sort of dynamics have some claiming peak California:
The cycle further benefits from the Alchian-Allen effect: agglomerating industries have higher productivity, which raises the cost of living and prices out other industries, raising concentration over time. ... Since startups raise the variance within whatever industry they’re started in, the natural constituency for them is someone who doesn’t have capital deployed in the industry. If you’re an asset owner, you want low volatility. ... Historically, startups have created a constant supply of volatility for tech companies; the next generation is always cannibalizing the previous one. So chip companies in the 1970s created the PC companies of the 80s, but PC companies sourced cheaper and cheaper chips, commoditizing the product until Intel managed to fight back. Meanwhile, the OS turned PCs into a commodity, then search engines and social media turned the OS into a commodity, and presumably this process will continue indefinitely. ... As long as higher rents raise the cost of starting a pre-revenue company, fewer people will join them, so more people will join established companies, where they’ll earn market salaries and continue to push up rents. And one of the things they’ll do there is optimize ad loads, which places another tax on startups. More dangerously, this is an incremental tax on growth rather than a fixed tax on headcount, so it puts pressure on out-year valuations, not just upfront cash flow.
If you live hundreds of miles away the tech companies may have no impact on your rental or purchase price, but you can't really control the algorithms or the ecosystem.
All you can really control is your mindset & ensuring you have optionality baked into your business model.
If you are debt-levered you have little to no optionality. Savings give you optionality. Savings allow you to run at a loss for a period of time while also investing in improving your site and perhaps having a few other sites in other markets.
If you operate a single website that is heavily reliant on a third party for distribution then you have little to no optionality. If you have multiple projects that enables you to shift your attention toward working on whatever is going up and to the right while letting anything that is failing pass time without becoming overly reliant on something you can't change.
