Just a long-time headcannon for me, partially confirmed by SOTR, but I have always thought that Burdock and Asterid met through her family apothecary shop, because Burdock would sell medicinal herbs there. He soon realized more herbs not only means more money, but more opportunity to see his longtime crush. I think they slowly developed a mutual adoration for one another, but Asterid was met with significant backlash from her family and friends when they caught on that she and Burdock were falling in love.

I think maybe her parents and Otho's parents sort of arranged for their families to unite and for Asterid and Otho to marry. Asterid was pissed, but Otho was thrilled because she was the most beautiful girl in town. I don't think Otho was anything short of a gentleman and never pushed it on Asterid, and maybe she warmed up to him somewhat after time. I think they were engaged, despite never being affectionate or intimate, because Asterid was clearly in love with someone else. And shortly before they got married, Asterid broke and ran off with her lover. This caused a huge rift with the bakery vs the apothecary, but Otho was of course understanding (and remorseful).

I think Evermarch didn't fully happen until they were in their early 20s. They'd be about 24ish by the time of Katniss's birth. No doubt Asterid would know a think or two about natural birth control, but I think it's a bit of a stretch that they were together 8 years before they had Katniss. Especially being as passionately, desperately in love as they were. But it could have also been a "five, ten, fifteen years" situation similar to how it was with Katniss and Peeta where Katniss was reluctant to have children.

Okay guys so do we think that by the time Haymitch gets back from the games Burdock and Asterid have officially gotten together? Like was it the games and their worry over Maysilee and Haymitch that helped bring them closer together? What do we think the timeline of their relationship was? How do we think they met?

what made you start fic writing? what makes you keep fic writing?

I really hadn’t written more than emails up until ~2 years ago. I discovered Fanfiction through web searching questions on THG - (‘opinions on how Katniss and Peeta grow together’ 😂 ) which led me to Fanfiction.net, Ao3, and then Tumblr (where all the FF authors were hanging out.) Eventually I decided to write as a way to find a place in the THG/everlark community 🫣, but now I continue because I realized I enjoy it!

Turns out apostrophe locations are, like, pretty important. (Sunrise on the Reaping Spoilers)(Also, i'm an idiot)

the first few days after Sunrise came out, I was super confused whenever people were talking about Katniss being confirmed as covey descended through her father. I was just like, "where are people getting that from? the text pretty clearly disproved it" i was on the phone with @evermarch talking about SOTR and this came up. we frequently disagree about theories, headcanons, and meta analysis - but usually we can see where the other person is coming from and most of the time we even land on new nuances the other didn't even think of (it's fucking great, except for all of the elder abuse i'm subjected to.) this time? we could NOT see eye to eye. ----------------------------------------------- @evermarch Serra, i don't know what to tell you, it's clearly in the text. Me: Except it's NOT. It's literally implicitly stated as otherwise in the text. @evermarch: HE CALLS HER CUZ

Me: HAYMITCH CALLS MAYSILEE SIS. THIS COULD JUST BE A COLLOQUIAL TERM OF CLOSENESS AND RESPECT. LIKE A CULTURAL THING. -----------------------------------------------

on and on for like SEVERAL minutes. i literally got up to read the passage and everything and was like "I'M LOOKING AT IT RIGHT NOW, IT SAYS SHE'S NOT HIS COUSIN. LIKE VERBATIM" finally we both pull out the passages to read it together, each absolutely certain that one of us was an absolute idiot (spoiler alert, 'tis i) and as i read the passage word for word, out loud to her - that was the moment i realized what had happened and the entire passage literally changed right in front of my eyes. my eyes read it, and completely imagined a different placement for ONE possessive apostrophe. that's ALL it took. I let out a quiet little, "oh my god" and @evermarch realized exactly what had happened, just a split second after i did. -------------------------------------------------- I'm going to show you the CORRECT passage. "Hang on, I've got a sack with my bow." Burdock ran off. She scooted down the branches and swung to the ground. She wasn't one of Burdock's Everdeen cousins, but I knew he had some distant ones on his ma's side. --------------------------------------------------- Now i'm going to show you how my eyes read it and interpreted the information at 12 AM on release day. "Hang on, I've got a sack with my bow." Burdock ran off. She scooted down the branches and swung to the ground. She wasn't one of Burdock Everdeen's cousins, but I knew he had some distant ones on his ma's side. ----------------------------------------------------

so in MY mind, Haymitch had just heard Burdock call Lenore Dove "cuz" and was then thinking to himself (and telling the reader) that he knows that Burdock DOES have some cousins, Lenore Dove just isn't one of them. obviously the INTENDED meaning of the line is that she's not related to Burdock on his dad's side of the family, but on his mother's side. my entire world view shifted. I learned how to read for the first time.

Thinking more about Burdock Everdeen and Suzanne Collins’ seeming inability to write anything other than lover boys.

Like I can’t get over the fact that he definitely talked to his friends about Asterid and was probably endlessly teased for falling for a girl he seemingly had no chance with. Like this boy pined hard and loud. I’m just picturing him listening very intently to Asterid talking about medicinal plants and then going out and finding some to bring back. He acts like it was no big deal and they just happened to stumble upon them when really he kept Haymitch and Blair out extra late because “Asterid said they were running low” meanwhile they’re sharing a knowing look. Like I love the idea of Burdock so being the type to find an excuse to bring up Asterid in every conversation for a time.

okay so katniss probably cannot bake very well, but there is going to be SOMETHING that she can make that, for whatever reason, is much better than peeta's version. like, maybe it's chocolate chip cookies, and peeta's always trying to elevate and overcomplicate them or make them technically perfect, but she just always adds a little too much butter and takes them out a minute too early and they come out perfectly. so peeta's pissed every year when, on the toast babies' birthdays, they're BEGGING and CLINGING to katniss for those damn cookies, when he's already melted the sugar for his cake topper sculpture on the multi-layer, three-tier lavender earl grey cake. (the girl is, like, eight at MOST here).

What, then, was the next course of treatment? Something dear, certainly, or else her mother wouldn’t have been so resistant. The only thing worse than tightening the purse strings was people thinking something was wrong behind closed doors. That sort of gossip spread like fire in District 12, where everything was coated in coal dust. And from her mother’s perspective, it was just as deadly.

also! I was talking with @evermarch last night about how it's not unlikely that Otho may have told Peeta about the time he was almost killed at a reaping (or could have even been reaped himself, the way someone else was immediately after). And how a well-timed punch may have just saved his life.

the Mellark family is intrinsically tied to the Everdeens through the stories Otho chooses to share with Peeta.

“peeta’s love for katniss is unrealistic!” “why would peeta harbor a crush since kindergarten?” “he didn’t even know her!”

I feel like we forget that peeta’s initial introduction to katniss is through his father telling him that he wanted to marry mrs. everdeen. here’s this little boy with an abusive mother, two older brothers to live up to, and a general feeling of “my family doesn’t really need me.” but katniss’s family? two loving parents and a close relationship with her little sister? how easy would it be for him to project his own wishes onto her? in another life, that might have been HIS family.

so when mr. everdeen is killed, peeta witnesses that fantasy family fall apart. he has to watch as katniss struggles to hold her mother and sister together when they can barely survive. by the time he tosses her that loaf of bread, she’s already a shadow of the girl he’d once idealized.

and then katniss volunteers to save her little sister? when peeta’s older brothers don’t do the same for him? for peeta to be thrown into a death trap with this girl who he’s attached himself to since kindergarten? yeah I would fall in love with her too.

TW: Death, Meaning, and Existentialism.

I'm not beating around the bush at all, I love yapping and sometimes what I yap is depressing. Don't give yourself a panic attack if you can't handle existential topics of purpose and meaning. Of me attempting to give An answer to the question "Why?"

Enjoy my ruminations from a chronic overthinker~

The question of “Why?” truly confounds me. A constant everpresent everlingering question that eats away at my very core. From the many delusions I fixate on like the Boltzmann Brain or Simulation Theorem; to the very core reality of it all. That of what we see and do and love and hate. We were thrust into a cruel uncaring world, a world in which we see horrors within and beyond comprehension. Cruelty found in nature as well as the hearts of man. From hunger driving the world, to the new alien sensibilities to the modern mind. Were we ready for such a leap into a technological revolution? Or were we too quick to embrace what we have no idea the implications of. Having been born after the advent of the modern computer, watching the rise and steady decline of the early 2000s internet; I see what human greed has done to something once so beautiful and now so… bleak. How we destroy what we love for the sake of personal gain.

So then, the question loops on itself. “Why?” Why… it’s such an unfair question as we’re but infants in this strange universe. Asking a child to complete a high calculus issue that stumps even the most ardent of mathematicians. It’s a question that intersects so many different branches of academia, wisdom, and belief that I’d wager a concrete answer for every single living being doesn’t exist. To answer that would require one to dig into oneself and their story and figure out the path, the answer that best suits them. Good or bad; evil or saintly, what are we to judge what is best for another person as long as what’s best for them doesn’t directly afflict another with dire circumstances. Why shouldn't we judge what is cleanly unjust however? And even then, with the law of nature, Survival of the Fittest… what’s best for the hungry wolf is existential for the clueless cervid. Are we but slaves to the machinations of our biology, or are we more like we were taught to be?

To ask why, one would need to reflect on what they value in the world. For the rich and greedy, they would likely say that power and money would be what they are purposed with. For those with no power and any semblance of wealth, they would likely aim to build community and bonds that last. Does Why revolve around money? No, I don't believe its as simple as that, there’s more to life than what you own. As for after all is said and done, at the end of an empire, at the end of one’s life, all that remains is what you remember. How you feel. No money will prevent the passing, even in the case of longterm immortality. The universe is a place of chaos upon order upon chaos. All descend into entropy; and all returns to dust eventually. Why then do we keep going despite the end being inevitable and all we yearn is lost? Is this truly all that is, the fragment of awareness for our curious human minds? Or is there a beyond that goes beyond that of what humankind even knows. Something baked into the hard code of the universe.

I am not looking to descend into the nature of reality or the like, not right now anyway. I more yearn for a simpler question. That of why. Why do we exist, what’s the point? Why do we dream if our thoughts mean nothing? Well, again… that’s up to the individual experiencer. To carve a life worth living, to build the foundations of something you can be proud of. To continue the evermarching story of Time and make a note in a long long game of Life. It doesn’t matter if we’re but a speck on a mote of dust in a swirling disk of fire cascading through a dark void settled in the midst of something incomprehensible. We could be but a dream for something bigger and even then that doesn’t diminish our experience. Not while we’re alive. For as long as we experience, for as long as we continue fighting against the forces that drag us into the dirt and make us miserable, we can create, we can love, we can feel. To me, the point of life, the answer to the question Why? Is to live. Live true to oneself, to experience to the best of your ability. To take the hand you were given, be it born of privilege and coddle or in the depths of destitution. Be it at the top of society feeling oneself a god, or sitting forgotten and invisible. The universe is cruel, uncaring, and cold; immutable fact that nothing's fair, nothing's just. It is up to us, as individuals, as a society, to pave a world worth living in. It is us as people to carve our own happiness in this calliope of space and time and experience it to the fullest we can. Much easier said than done I will admit, I won’t lie I’ve entirely lost focus of my own values due to survival at times. But at my core, I know that as long as I try and try and try, as long as I live each and every day with my heart and head strong and curious and true… then I can at the end of my life say with pride that I led a life worth living.
