Post-epilogue Everlark family. Inspired by a conversation I had with a little one. Rated T for theme.
On the walk home from school, the boy is quiet, letting his sister monopolize Peeta's ear. He doesn't even stop to examine a bug or an interesting rock, or to say hello to the shopkeepers they pass. Peeta listens to their daughter, who chatters about the jump rope tournament coming up, and how she and her classmates compare to each other.
Thankfully, the boy's teacher had phoned Katniss and Peeta to let them know their son would be getting the first lesson about the Games. And that would always include the old star-crossed lovers, the baker and the huntress. The children had to be assured that such atrocities were over, and their story central to that ending.
Katniss waits anxiously in the bakery, helping a customer pick out a box of pastries. Peeta takes the kids through their normal routine of heading to the back and getting a snack, while Katniss finishes with the customer and flips the sign over to "closed" just a little earlier than usual.
Katniss first looks at their son, sitting on a stool at the counter and somberly pushing around an apple slice, and then to Peeta. He gives a quick raise of his eyebrows and a shake of his head, indicating a lack of response from their son. The boy has always been the quieter of their two children. The girl had come back home with a million questions when she learned about the Games, but the boy is taking the opposite approach.
"Hey bud," Peeta says, taking a seat at the counter next to him. "Your teacher told us you learned something hard in school today."
He looks up at his father with discerning gray eyes, older than his six years and gives a short nod.
"I'm learning long division," the girl says. "That's harder than anything he learns."
"You learned about The Hunger Games today," Katniss says. She stands next to Peeta, an arm wrapped around his shoulder and he puts his arm around her waist. "Your teacher told us."
Their daughter closes her mouth, pressed in a line. When she first came with her questions, Katniss and Peeta had been sure to have her promise not to tell her little brother, not until he was old enough to know.
"No one else's parents were in The Hunger Games," the boys says. "Only me."
"You're right," Peeta says. "Here in Twelve and in your class, only you and your sister have parents who had to go in the Hunger Games. There are a few other people whose parents were in the Hunger Games, but most of them are grown up now and live far away."
The boy scrunches down, eyes on his plate. Katniss knows this boy and how he works. She works in a similar way, thoughts becoming dangerous without being spoken out loud to have someone help straighten out.
"Do you have any questions for us?" Katniss asks. "Anything you want to know?"
"Did you kill anyone?" the boy asks, glancing up through pale lashes.
"Yes," Peeta says. "Neither of us wanted to. Never, ever."
"Were they bad guys?" the boy asks, desperation in his voice.
"No, bud," Peeta says. "No, they weren't."
Not most of them, Katniss thinks, her final arrow in Coin's chest flashing in her mind, but they were keeping things simple for their children until they were older.
"They had no choice," the girl says, sitting up straight in her stool. "Momma and Daddy wouldn't kill anyone if they didn't have to."
The boy's lip wobbles, though he ducks his head to try and hide it underneath his mop of blond curls. Katniss slides her arm off of Peeta and holds their son to her, pressing his cheek to her breast. She wishes she could take this fear and ache away from him, knowing how heavy it rests on such a little body. She would take his pain onto her own, if she could.
"I don't wanna kill anybody," the boy wails in his mother's arms.
"Oh, baby, you won't have to kill anybody," Katniss says. "There are no Hunger Games anymore. Daddy and I made sure of it."
"My teacher said there was a war," the boy says, his grip tight on the back of his mother's shirt, his words muffled between fabric and one squished cheek. "Didn't people have to kill then, too? What if there's another war?"
"We don't think there will be another war," Peeta says.
"But what if there is and I have to kill somebody?" the boy asks. "You and Momma had to. That means I might, too."
There was no reason to believe Panem would succumb to the horrors it had when the baker and huntress were young, but there was always that what if, that chance history's cycle picking up again. It haunted both Katniss and Peeta still.
"It's scary to think something like that could happen again," Katniss says, brushing their son's curls out of his eyes. "But remember the game we play together?"
"The good things game!" their daughter bounces in her seat excitedly and her brother lifts his head to turn and look at her, light coming back to his eyes.
"Yes, the good things game," Katniss says. "That's what we can play when we get worried about bad things in the future."
"Let's play the game now," Peeta says. "Only the good things we think about will be about you, bud."
The boy squishes his shoulders inward, his chin ducking to his chest in bashfulness, but the slight lift of the corners of his mouth let them know he's pleased with the idea.
"What about me?" the girl demands.
"We'll do you another day, baby," Katniss says. "For now, let's focus on your brother."
Their daughter is less intrigued by this, hand now propping up her chin against the counter.
"Let's see," Peeta says. "There's no one better at catching tadpoles than you, that's for sure."
"Or such a help when we have to clean up the kitchen," Katniss says.
"And you're so bright and curious," Peeta says. "You ask questions I've never had before."
"And so friendly to all of our customers that come in."
Their daughter jumps in, "You help get us free candy from the store."
"Free candy?" Peeta asks. "Well that's just about the best thing to the two of you, isn't it?"
Peeta gives their son a tweak on the nose and he laughs, glowing at the game revolving around him. They share a few other good things about their son and brother, until if he's still worried about having to kill anyone like his parents, it's far from his mind. The boy tucks into his snack and then he and his sister are off playing.
Peeta can sense the worry coming off Katniss with the way her brow hangs heavy over her eyes, and he draws her to him from behind, kissing where her neck and shoulder meet.
"You all right?" he asks.
"Yeah," Katniss sighs. "I just hope we weren't lying to him."
"I wasn't," Peeta says. "He really is the best at catching tadpoles."
"I mean about what he's worried about."
"We weren't lying. We don't think he'll need to, but..."
"Right. The 'but.'"
"Maybe we need to play the game ourselves," Peeta says, turning Katniss around so they face each other.
Katniss sighs, putting her arms around Peeta's neck. The game gets tedious and long for her, but she's always willing to start off with her first good thing.
"You," she says. "Saving me with that bread."
And Peeta returns his first good thing. "You. Coming to find me in the arena."
They usually banter back and forth all of the good things they'd done for each other, purposefully leaving out the messy complications of their early relationship and only remembering what made them fall in love in the first place. But today, Katniss skips ahead.
"You," she says. "Helping me talk to our little boy about this."
Peeta gives her a kiss, then says, "You. Having the courage to carry and birth and raise our children."
And all they can do is hope they can do enough to protect their children from their fears coming true.

The labyrinth
Summary: Willow Everdeen Mellark arrives at the University in the Capitol and meets her roommate, a strange girl with light hair. How will their first encounter go? This is a short AU set roughly 30 years after the events of Mockingjay. It explores Willow's first time at the Capitol, her ideas about its people and the beggining of a friendship, or maybe more. Cassie or Cassandra is an original character with an interesting family history (guess who she is related to). I might turn this into a proper fic one day, but for now this is a glimpse of what could be. With no further ado, enjoy!
On the way to the University, I take in everything around me. Buildings, stores, vehicles, people. Above all, people. The images from home really do not do justice to the riotous aesthetics of the Capitol citizens. An amalgam of colors, fabrics and shapes swirls through the window and I almost get dizzy. But I force myself to keep watching. After all, this is what I wanted right? To experience this unknown world far from my simple District 12.
I stop for a second thinking of my mother. Right now, she's probably hunting in the woods to avoid her thoughts. To avoid any thought about her daughter stuck in the middle of this enormous city, which must have left so many memories marked on her skin.
The driver's voice brings me back to reality, announcing our arrival. I pay and thank him before getting out, coming face to face with the most imposing structure I’ve ever seen. Ancient columns, tall carved gates, and a pristine staircase dominate the entrance, packed with students.
I feel a tickling in my chest as I walk into the crowd. Several heads follow me as I pass, probably noticing that I'm not from around here. Although it is nothing new for districts to send their children to study at the Capitol, the numbers remain low. I wink at them without thinking twice, causing a few blushes, before leaving them behind.
After putting some documents in order, I finally head to what will be my bedroom for the next few years. I wonder if my partner has arrived yet. Will she be from a District like me? That would make the transition easier. Although, challenges never scared me, anyway.
As I get to the last hallway, I see that the door is already open. Looks like I won't be able to choose the bed. Whatever, it's time for the truth. I knock to get her attention, and she quickly turns around. The morning light reflects on her bright hair, and her eyes stay fixed on me. What a strange girl. She stands petrified, her next move undecipherable. Is she scared of me? Maybe Capitol people are as exaggerated as everyone says. Well, Effie is living proof of that, but that's part of her charm. If anything, my experience with my aunt gives me an advantage now. So, I offer her my hand.
“Hi, nice to meet you. You must be my roommate. I'm Willow.”
She blinks a few times, as if waking up. She gets closer to shake my hand and her floral scent reaches my nose. When we touch, I feel her silk like skin. And the coldness of her fingers.
“I’m Cassie. Sorry, I swear I'm not always like this. I'm still getting used to this place and my head is a mess.”
Her voice is sweet, but it doesn’t have the ring I was expecting from a Capitol girl. I take a better look at her clothes and I realize she’s far from those characters I drove by today. Was I mistaken?
“It's okay. I get what you mean. It’s all new to me here. The Capitol's sure bigger than it looks on TV, huh?”
I was waiting for her to boast proudly about everything this city had to offer to its newcomers, like any citizen would do. But it didn’t happen.
“Yeah, ever since I’ve got here, I’ve felt like I'm in a huge labyrinth.”
She looks away, and I notice how she rubs her hands nervously. She reminds me of my brother, when he gets carried away with worry instead of facing his problems. And if there's one thing I'm good at, is at getting him out of his head.
“Well, seems like luck’s on our side.” I say arranging my bags on the empty bed.
“What do you mean?” She asks me with a raised eyebrow.
“If we wanna make it out of the labyrinth, we'll have a better chance together, right?”
It takes her a few seconds to get what I mean, but when she does, my pulse quickens. She smiles. And then I realize. She is not strange. She is beautiful.

The year of the 73rd Hunger Games, Delly Cartwright is reaped first. Her little brother, swallowed by the crowd, lets out a little half-cry. Her father claps a hand over his mouth so as not to scream, and her mother grips his arm hard enough to bruise, hard enough to keep her upright. Delly trips over the toe of her dusty shoes– too big, with just a small heel, and stumbles all the way up the stairs of the stage. Effie Trinket purses her lips, painted spring green, and smiles wide enough to show all of her perfect white teeth. The year of the 73rd Hunger Games, Peeta Mellark is reaped second.
Woot woohoo another fic to post about!! Alternate imagining of the 74th Hunger Games. For those who love Everlark, Peeta angst, and Johanna motherfucking Mason.

Hey! I'm Dani, I'm 19 and I'm here for your JHutch character/Chaotic Everlark (or Peeniss, if you're classy) needs!
•Notes for Requests•
Feel free to request anything and any character! Worst I can do is not respond :D
That being said, however, here are your guidelines:
Things I will NOT write: Rape, incest, scat/waterplay, underage characters with full grown adults, abuse, DD/LG, heavy BDSM (bc I do not have enough experience for that one.) MPreg, Omegaverse.
Things I WILL write: ANY GENDER READER! Yes, this includes trans Readers! (You can also request any pronouns as well as multiple.) Rough sex, age gaps, CERTIAN dub-cons (such as reader x character being inebriated but not passed out.) Drug use, certian power dynamics, daddy kink, threesomes, use of sex toys, basically anything that isn't on my Will Not Write list.
"Why do you put AFAB/AMAB instead of Fem/Masc reader?" My reasoning for the label is to only identify the physical sex of the Reader, not the gender identity. I only use these terms on smut fics where I am actively discussing the genitals of the Reader. Otherwise, I try my hardest to make the Reader as gender neutral as possible. There are times I will use gendered pronouns in a work, but again, these pronouns are not meant to specify identity. The only time I will specify the gender identity of the Reader and/or use fem/masc is if I am specifically given a request for a Reader with a specific identity. Other than that, you are welcome to imagine the Readers identity as you like.
(Note: I'm soon going to edit my old works to include specification for any use of gendered pronouns/if the Reader has breasts if the tags do not contain this information already. At this moment in time, some works will not have those tagged.)
•°《●▪︎♡▪︎●》°•
DISCLAIMER! I will not write Reader x Josh Hutcherson works. I personally am not comfortable writing fiction about an actual person. Not judging if you do, I'm just saying I won't.

Everlark: The Classics #1
okay. so. I won't assume someone will remember my blog last year where I promised I will list down the everlark fics classics (in my opinion) for those whose new to the fandom and those who came back from the renaissance last year. Sooo, instead of having them compiled in a neat list, I will post them individually with a corresponding moodboard and small review (probably once a week? let's see)
With that said, I present you the one and only: Waterlily by HGRomance!
Published: 2013
Chapters: 18 | Complete
Waterlily is a modern AU where Peeta is an exchanged student spending a year in Panem Island, where he stays at Katniss' village and his host family. I won't spoil it for those who never encountered this masterpiece but the whole build up of their relationship is an interesting dynamic that sets it apart from other fanfics I read.
The setting alone makes it unique from the rest. Islands, rural seam community, beaches, then boom a sudden white boy coming in the picture. The way this fic entangles and straightens the everlark HEA is such a fun read especially the added character of Katniss' here. (I'm dying to spoil it lol). The writing is poetic, as always, if you're a fan of HGR's works. The pacing, especially that one scene that breaks and makes it all (something about a cave) was a tear-jerker.
It's safe to assume this is one of the classic fic every thg fan should read when they wanna start getting into the rabbit hole of fanfiction, hence why I chose it as a welcoming fic for this series. If you happen to love this one too and wanna chat then please do! If you haven't read it, what are you waiting for?

In tonight's episode of siblings or dating... both!
Okay so the girls in my Everlark discord said some very funny things and I had to write a one-shot about it:
[AU where hijacked Peeta fully forgot about the romantic tension between Gale and Katniss and he truly believes they are cousins -- using the real book dialogue as a base then going off on my merry fanfiction way-- I will be adding this to my 'cellar conversations' collection (I finally made the funny one!).]
“Thanks for the water,” Peeta says.
“No problem,” Gale replies. “I wake up ten times a night anyway.”
“To make sure Katniss is still here?” asks Peeta.
“Something like that,” Gale admits.
There’s a long pause before Peeta speaks again. “That was funny, what Tigris said. About no one knowing what to do with her.”
“Well, we never have,” Gale says.
They both laugh.
“She loves you, you know,” Gale says. “The way she kissed you in the Quarter Quell… well, she never kissed me like that.”
Peeta frowns. Kissed him? He must have misheard. “It was just part of the show,” Peta assures him, although he can't help the edge of trepidation in his voice.
“No, you won her over. Gave up everything for her. Maybe that’s the only way to convince her you love her.” There’s a long pause where Peeta wonders what the hell this conversation is about. “I should have volunteered to take your place in the first Games. Protected her then.”
“You couldn’t,” Peeta speaks somewhat slower than usual. “She’d never have forgiven you. You had to take care of your family. You matter more to her than her life.” You. Her family that you are a part of. Because you're cousins. Close cousins who look like siblings. Cousins.
“Well, it won’t be an issue much longer. I think it’s unlikely all three of us will be alive at the end of the war. And if we are, I guess it's Katnisss problem. Who to choose.” Gale yawns. “We should get some sleep.”
“Yeah,” Peeta slides his handcuffs down his support. Maybe this is one of those normal things he forgot were normal. But whatever, who cares, he's probably going to die tomorrow anyway. This is really not his most pressing concern.
"Night," Gale rolls over and he's left to stare at the ceiling.
[Several months later, before 'so after' during 'Peeta and I grow back together']
Peeta picks up the stack of unopened mail that sits precariously on Katniss's mantle. He shuffles through the letters and sees a variety of names, including his own. Katniss sits patiently on the couch, watching him without speaking a word.
"Why haven't you opened these?" He asks with a smile as he waves some of the letters around with one hand. "Looks like everyone and their mother wrote to you."
Katniss tries to hide it but she lets out a little laugh. She rolls her eyes. "I don't think everyone wrote me a letter, Peeta."
He shrugs and goes back to shuffling the letters, taking care to tuck his own at the very bottom of the stack. No use reading those now. He pauses his shuffling when his eyes land on a familiar name. A name that's been bothering him for some time now, in the back of his mind, with an old question.
He clears his throat and attempts to appear casual. "Hey, you have a few here from Gale Hawthorne. You two got along well, right?"
Katniss visibly tenses. "Yeah." she offers nothing more.
"Well, maybe you should open those first." He smiles and offers the three envelopes to her. "Should be easy."
Katniss purses her lips. "I'd rather not start with him, thanks."
Peeta nods rapidly. "Oh. Okay, yeah that's fine." Remain casual he reminds himself. He doesn't want to offend her or anything like that. He holds the letters in one hand and reaches up to scratch the back of his neck. "Hey, um, is it okay if I ask you something?"
Katniss raises one of her ebony eyebrows. She smiles at him quizzically, "Uh, you just did."
"Ha," Peeta smiles and rolls his eyes good-naturedly. "Right. Yeah. But um it's a bit of a dumb question." He pauses. Katniss doesn't do anything other than stare at him expectantly. "Um, so, no judgment or anything like that, I mean, I'll still like you of course, but uh, was Gale actually your cousin?" He frowns almost with embarrassment as he asks. Katniss raises both her eyebrows in surprise. "I mean, ah, maybe that wasn't that big of a deal back then? I don't actually remember. I mean, well, I think I do? But uh, maybe your family was different, I mean, not that your family was different bad or anything but--"
"Peeta," Katniss interjects but he's already on a roll.
"I mean, I guess there weren't that many guys around our age who were visually interesting--"
"Peeta!" Katniss is laughing. She covers her mouth with her hands and shakes her head, but he can still see the laughter shaking her frame and lighting up her eyes. "No. No. Gale and I aren't cousins. That was just something the Capitol made up. Not real."
"Oh." Peeta nods. He presses the stack of letters to his chest and nods again. "Well, okay."
Katniss drops her hands back to her lap. She's still smiling. "Is there something else?"
"Well, I know you kissed him. He told me," he admits. "Um, was he your boyfriend or something?"
She shakes her head. "It was... complicated. Nothing ever really went anywhere. We were barely friends at the end. Probably strangers now."
Peeta takes a moment to absorb that and feels a deep sadness for her. He looks down at the letters. Maybe not strangers.
"Why don't you read these?" He insists gently, extending Gale's letter towards her. "It looks like he wants to talk."
Katniss frowns but takes them. She places the closed envelopes in her lap and pats them gently. "Maybe," she concedes. "Sometime later. When I'm ready."
He nods, "Sure." He smiles at her and walks around the coffee table to join her on the couch. "Sorry about that dumb question by the way."
Katniss laughs again, her eyes crinkling, "No it's okay. I mean I would want to know."
[and that's it! I didn't know what else to write to end it, but this was kind of funny to me]

Hey
I wrote an Everlark fanfiction. Peeta sees Gale and Katniss kissing. Katniss’ POV
Word count: 1300
English is not my first language, sorry if there are any mistakes<3
It was about 7 pm when Gale visited me. We didn't really talk after he found out about the engagement.
"Hi", he said, walking in my room. I was surprised to see him.
"Hi", I smile back, hoping he'd get over whatever it is between us so we can go on and be friends, "How's work?"
"Good. How's your leg?"
"Terrible. Mom doesn't even let me move, it gets boring sometimes."
"That sounds bad. And what do you do all day?"
I try not to mention that Peeta's coming by everyday to help me with the family book. I don't want to hurt Gale's feelings, since he'd interpret it as something more. Is it something more? I definitely seem to always end up with the boy with the bread, one way or another, but I'm not sure he even likes me anymore.
"Not much", I say and then there's silence.
"Katniss...", his tone gives me anxiety; i know he's about to bring something awkward up and I don't know how to deal with it, "I love you."
My eyes widen. We never really talked about this, but I assumed he had a crush on me. That's it. A crush. Not that he loves me.
"You don't have to answer now, but...", and then he kisses me. I pull back in shock.
"I had to do it once. Hello, Peeta", Gale smirks and I notice the blonde boy sitting in the doorway. I immediately panic. Did he see us kissing? I've been a bitch to him until I realized how I felt about our engagement. Truth is, I loved being able to call him my fiancé. Peeta was popular before, but after the Games, every girl was head over heels, I'd hear them talk about his muscles, his pretty smile. But no one had the chance to kiss his pink lips or to observe his long eyelashes. He was mine, in a way.
"Hi", he greets back, obviously a little sad. Did Gale do that on purpose? "I can come back later if..."
"No, Peeta, stay", I interrupt him. I don't want him to leave here upset. As his figure approaches my bed, I grab his hand. I don't even realize I do until he looks down at it and carefully slides his hand away.
"You don't have to do that. We're not really engaged."
This makes my heart break. I didn't really realize it till now, I thought this meant something for him as well.
"Oh.."
After talking for a while, he tells me his father needs help at the bakery. I put on a fake smile and wish him luck, but I can't sleep that night. Or the other day when he doesn't visit me. He used to come by everyday. I can't keep going on like this. Instead, Gale visits me.
"Did you do that on purpose", I cut him short, not even saying hi.
"What?"
"The kiss. So that Peeta can see it."
I don't have time to play his games, I don't want other people to get hurt because Gale is selfish. Peeta would've never done that to him, even if they hate each other.
"You told me there's nothing going on between you two, Katniss. I-"
"I lied", I say before I can stop myself.
Gale looks hurt. Maybe he's done a shitty thing, but I know he cares about me. In fact, he loves me.
"Look, you're the only person I trust besides mom and Prim”- and Peeta, I add in my head, but choose to omit the detail-“You're my best friend and you're really good looking, you have to know that, girls are always talking about it"
Gale smiles so I take it as a clue to continue:
"But I can't see you that way, Gale. I'm sorry."
"It's alright. I don't really have a say in it, do I?”He sighs before adding: “I'm sorry for what I did, Katniss.”
“So… friends”, I ask awkwardly and Gale nodds.
I can see him struggling with the conclusion, but I know our friendship can get past this, right?
________________________________
It's been 3 days since I last saw Peeta. He still brings me cheese buns, but never comes to my room. Prim told me he always asks mom how I'm feeling. I decide to go to the bakery, even though my foot is far from well. I can manage, I'll just get a cane.
I wait for mom to leave for work. After what seems like forever, I finally hear the door close.
I literally crawl down the stairs. The cane is downstairs and there's no way I could step on my foot. Finally, I reach it, but I can’t get up. I didn’t really think this through…
"Katniss? What are you doing", I turn around to see Prim, confused.
"I'm fine, Prim. A little help?"
She helps me get up and now I'm using the cane to get to the door.
"Where are you going? Does mom know-"
"I have to see Peeta", I sigh and she smiles, putting her hands on her hips.
“Will you finally confess your true love for him”
I just roll my eyes, but I can feel my cheeks getting flushed:
"Don't tell mom! I'll be right back."
"If you're not back in two hours, I'm coming after you."
"Give me three? I have to use a cane!"
Prim giggles, murmuring a "fine" and I walk out the door.
The road is not easy and as expected, it took me almost an hour. I'm nervous when I knock on the back door and I'm greeted by Rye, one of Peeta's older brothers.
He rolls his eyes, yelling:
"Peeta, your wife is here."
"Very funny", I hear another voice screaming back. Peeta's.
"I'm serious, loser.”
I blush at the word wife. 10 seconds later, I see Peeta. His eyes widen:
"Katniss? What are you doing here? Did you come all this way by yourself? You're supposed to be resting! Why-"
"Shut up", I interrupt him, "Peeta, we have to talk."
Before he can say something, I continue: "What you saw 3 days ago... Gale and-" I swallow hard, looking at the frown on his face "yeah... he did that on purpose. So that you'd think we were together. But we're not, I clarified. I told him he's my best friend and that I could never see him any other way."
"That's nice, Katniss, but it's not really my business", Peeta replies coldly. It's not his usual warm, cozy tone that I love and I know what I said isn't enough. “Let’s get you home, alright”, I could see the worry in his blue eyes and it made my heart melt. The way he was still worried about me, after I led him on, hurt his feelings… no, we’ll talk about this now.
"If it wasn't your business, why did you stop visiting me?"
"I'm sorry, my dad needed help-"
"Bullshit."
"So why do you think I stopped visiting you, then", he asks, visibly irritated.
"Because you don't want me to be with anybody else. You want me to be yours", I snap back and Peeta blushes lightly. I know I've never really let him speak during this conversation and this time isn’t any different. I kiss him, cutting off whatever lie he'd come up with and for a moment everything felt fine. One of his hand plays with my hair, while the other one was pressed against my waist, closing the distance between our bodies. I knew he wanted me just as much as I wanted him.
We have to stop in order to breathe a little, foreheads still pressed against each other.
"Katniss..."
"Mhm?"
"I really hated seeing you with Gale."
"I know. I hated him kissing me", I scoff and Peeta smiles.
After a while, we break off, Peeta’s hand still holding me so I don’t fall. I forgot about my leg.
"I should go. If i'm not home in an hour, Prim will tell mom"
"There's no way I'm letting you walk", he says and picks me up, bridal style.
"You can't be serious", I laugh.
"Watch me."

The Third Thing, an Everlark Fanfiction
Tumblr media
"We did not spend our days gazing into each other’s eyes. We did that gazing when we made love or when one of us was in trouble, but most of the time our gazes met and entwined as they looked at a third thing."
Snapshots of Katniss and Peeta's post-war life. Each chapter is inspired by and loosely based on a quote from "The Third Thing" by Donald Hall.
--
Chapter 1: “For two decades we inhabited the double solitude of my family farmhouse in New Hampshire, writing poems, loving the countryside.”
Read on ao3.
The Third Thing is a brilliant essay/love letter by the poet Donald Hall. It is not necessary to have read the essay to enjoy this story, but I strongly suggest you do. It is a meditation on love, art, grief, and companionship and has changed my outlook on those matters for the better. And the Everlark vibes are just immaculate!
If you choose to read the essay, you will notice right away that it was written after the author lost his wife. I will not and cannot go there with Katniss and Peeta, hence there is no MCD archive warning. Nevertheless, I think its nostalgic and wistful atmosphere complements Katniss's narration very well.
This first chapter was written almost a year ago (one of the first pieces of Everlark fanfiction I ever wrote), but I didn't have the idea to base them on the essay until this December. After that, writing the other chapters was so much more fun! I have around 7-8 already written at various lengths.
Hope you'll read and enjoy it!

So I know you like Marvel, DC, and Percy Jackson, but what other shows, movies, or genres to you like??? Action, horror, comedy, crime/medical dramas? If you don’t mind me asking that is .
hmmmm
so DC and PJO are definitely the big ones, and have been for years but other than that
Miss Peregrine's Home/ Peculiar Children series
greys anatomy with my sister (but i refuse to watch past season 14, there was NO reason to keep going
the owl house? a little? i still read the moringmark comics and am on the subreddit, but i'm not really active in the fandom. same goes for gravity falls. OH I NEED TO POST A GRAVITY FALLS THING ITS COOL AS SHIT!!!
throne of glass (sarah j. maas series) i love this series but oh my fucking god the fandom sucked when i was last in it. absolutely no understanding of any sort of morally gray character. i adore characters who are human and make mistakes, and from what i saw.... no one else did.
sort of merlin tv but also.... just the fanfics. i watched the first season of the actual show and then it got removed from netflix so i just read the fandom wiki and fanfiction. got into it originally because caffeinatedflumadiddle (SOSF writer) also wrote for merlin.
umbrella academy!! TV more than comics but i definitely like both. TV wise, i've not actually watched season 3 yet, but imma get there at some point.
love the true lives of the fabulous killjoys comics, don't really read the fics bc ppl conflate the fabulous four with the band and that's ick.
heartstopper! my ex gf got me into the series, but i definitely still love them now!! personally i like the show, then the novels (like solitaire!!! god i love solitaire), then the graphic novels. i love nick and Charlie (obviously) but tao is my favorite non-main character. non main being not-nick-or-charlie.
dear evan hansen. not like. a lot a lot, but i like the fics, the book was cool. not watched the musical, but listened to the songs.
hunger games!! controversial opinion but i don't really thing gale did much wrong? like he designed bombs WHILE THEY WERE IN WAR. what happened to prim was a tragedy, but one that was accidental. definitely still team everlark though.
derry girls! watch it (and rewatch it) with my family a lot. my favorite is michelle.
love both the song of achilles and circe by madeline miller, even if they're not historically accurate (moreso the circe there...) honestly, love a lot of mythological retellings-- daughters of sparta is another really good one.
speechless (tv) is great! watched it mainly for the nonverbal rep, ray is definitely my favorite character. fun fact, my mum was in a mums group with minnie driver.
everything's gonna be okay! also watched for rep (this time just autism in general) and also love it. drea is my favorite character.
coraline!!! holy shit i love coraline. book and movie. favorite animated movie by far.
my sister's keeper is a great book. not watched the movie, but i love the book.
girl in pieces is a great book.
i watched fate the winx saga, that was good
school spirits!! can't wait for season 2
okay also, nonfiction/poetry wise
i adore richard siken. he's a wonderful poet. i like crush more than war of the foxes, and i can't wait for the next collection to come out!! seriously ask me about his poetry, i could go on for ages-- i've got favorite quotes, favorite poems, everything.
black girl, call home (and other poems by the author) jasmine mans is great. i am white, so disclaimer there, i probably shouldn't speak as to the racial poetry, but i definitely enjoy her queer and sexual assualt poetry.
a couple of others i can't pull up rn
night by elie wiesel. genuinely guys, usually i don't like nonfiction, but i read this book for english nine YEARS ago, and it was such a beautiful book that i bought it when the unit was over. it's absolutely horrific, but.
radium girls by kate moore. was my special interest for years and years and years, and still definitely a comfort book.
genres?
honestly for books i just wander through barnes and noble and see what strikes my fancy
it really depends on my mood, like, i have tv shows/movies for background noise while i do homework/chores, tv shows/movies for when i'm trying to fall asleep, ones to watch with other people, ones to watch by myself...
i like watching a lot of documentaries. on Netflix, i recommend keep sweet pray and obey, brain on fire, athlete a, the volcano: rescue from whaakari, and take care of maya. also, i can't remember the name, but the boston marathon massacre one.
also, hannah gadsby? great comedian 10/10 recommend. i've loved the shows since the first came out in 2018. not watched the most recent ones yet. also rec the book.
i guess mainly action and fantasy. and then documentaries, and sometimes medical dramas.
medical drama wise i've watched greys anatomy, house, new amsterdam, parts of the good doctor, and the first couple of episodes of scrubs.
OH FOR MY BOOK PEOPLE IF YOU'RE EVER IN CHICAGO, GO TO EXILE IN BOOKVILLE ITS WONDERFUL!!
everytime i go to chicago i go to exile in bookville. if yall want the website link,
sorry this got so over the top lol

fanfiction writing ask: 5, 6, 23, 36!
Sorry it took me so long to get to this, friend. Ducked out to visit family. Thanks for sending the ask!
5. How many wips do you have? What fandoms/pairings are they for?
Too many to count. But if we only count the ones I'm actively working on, as in I've opened the documents and added words to them in the past month or two? Then I can say that I have four. Spellbound, and the three stories of the Outside Chance universe. All of those are for The Hunger Games fandom, two are Everlark as in Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark, one is Ryen Mellark/Primrose Everdeen (also an Everlark??), and one is Graham Mellark/Savannah Everett (an original character but that makes this one also Everlark). So basically I am a one trick pony. Oh well.
6. What's the last line you wrote?
Infernal shade. Die!
23. Is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? Hardest?
For me, in order of easiest to hardest: beginning, end, middle.
36. What fic are you proudest of?
Oh a tough question. Also a mean one, lol. Maybe because I'm proud of so many of my fics for different reasons, I find this question almost impossible to answer. I'm really proud of Maybe Tomorrow, 9000 rpm, my Outside Chance universe, but it's difficult to pick one because then I feel like I'm dissing the others lol, even though that's not really the case.

!!!boo!!! (trick or treat)
any hcs of how everlark spends halloween / autumn in general? (and / or a moodboard emulating their autumn season vibes, if u want :o)!!)
One thing I keep thinking about the apple trees on the edge of the forest and the apple tree that had been in Peeta's backyard. So sit back (and put on this song if you'd like) for a drabble on the Everlark family apple picking.
Tumblr media
I take a deep breath in, the air of autumn cool and invigorating as it flows into my lungs, while the afternoon sunlight bathes us in warmth. After a spring of dandelion salads and a summer of berries with cream comes my favorite season of all: apple season.
“Careful, baby!” Katniss rushes over to our son who starts climbing up the tree trunk.
“Mama, I can do it!” he protests and scrambles up higher in the branch. Katniss lets him be but keeps an eye on him, hovering near the edge of the branches.
“Daddy, my basket’s full,” Our daughter leans backwards as she totters forward with a basket full of the red and gold apples. I catch the basket wider than our girl and lift it up and away from her.
“There’s lots more up high,” our daughter says.
“I can get them!” Our son drops an apple into Katniss’s waiting apron.
“As long as you keep your feet on that tree,” Katniss says. “If you dangle like a monkey, you’ll be back on the ground.”
“You stay there,” I say. “I’ll get Mama and Daddy’s tree.”
“I’m getting the ladder for mine!” Our girl scurries to pick up the worn wooden ladder and swing it toward her tree.
“When’s mine gonna have apples?” Our boy asks.
“Any year now,” I tell him, reaching up to the highest I can to pluck from the crown of the tree. “You’ll have to be patient and wait until the tree is ready.”
“It’s not fair,” he says. “All the other trees have apples.”
“I had to wait nine years for mine!” Our daughter says, hand on her hip, the ladder perched against her apple tree.
“How long did you and Daddy have to wait, Mama?” Our son tosses two apples down at once to Katniss.
“For this first one? I think it must have been…ten years. Right, Daddy?”
“Ten years,” I confirm. I’d started sprouting the seed from some of the wild apples at the edge of the forest, but only planted the tree a year later when things between Katniss and I got settled and I moved in with her. From there, it took ten years of care before we got any fruit out of the first tree.
“What about your wedding tree?” Our daughter asks, a new basket perched on the ladder step above her and filling up with more apples.
“Eight years,” I say. “It gave fruit right along with the first one.”
“I hope mine is only eight years,” our son says. “I want apples from my tree next year!”
“Maybe you will,” Katniss says. “All you can do is wait.”
Our son groans and I hide a smile by turning my face to the rustling green leaves and small, round apples. Now in Panem, kids can’t wait to grow up and ours are no different. There’s so much to do and experience and they don’t have the patience to wait and appreciate life as it is. Now in the fifth decade of my life, I know better than to wish for any moment with my wife and children to go by faster.
As our baskets’ capacity for apples has been met, we sit down on a blanket in front of the plucked trees and eat the crisp, sweet fruit. The taste reminds me of an apple tree I used to spend my falls gathering fruit from, my brothers and I competing for who could pick the most and our father showing us how to peel and cook them into the goods we’d sell, but sneak us each a slice to taste.
Just like my family did then, we’ll take these apples and make some into pies or apple butter, others we’ll eat fresh, and some we’ll preserve in cans to use in the winter when the world rests from all of its work to nestle in with those we love. And its taste will bring with it the memory of this golden afternoon, forever ours to remember.

"Me llamo Cassie. Lo siento, juro que no soy siempre así. Aún me estoy acostumbrando a este lugar y mi cabeza es un caos."
Su voz es dulce, pero no tiene el timbre que esperaba de una chica del Capitolio. Hecho un vistazo a su ropa y me doy cuenta que está muy lejos de esos personajes que vi mientras venía en el auto. ¿Me había equivocado?
"¿A qué te refieres?"
Y entonces me doy cuenta. No es extraña. Es hermosa.

On 2022
I don’t really know what to say about 2022; it’s been good and bad for me. I don’t have anything particularly poignant or wise to say. The last few years, in general, have been rough (as I know they have been for many) but scattered with blessings, fun times, family, and friends.
In 2022 I lost a baby and a grandparent, but I was also blessed with two more babies, twin boys, who are due in May 2023. And I’m so thankful for them, and just hoping they’ll have good health and that I can give them happy lives. Also this year, I’ve made some good friends and gotten closer to others; I’ve enjoyed writing and participating in fandom but have also gotten extremely burned out and frustrated at times, so much so that I deleted a blog and took an extended break for several months. Fortunately, I’ve learned not to let little things bother me as much (at least in fandom-they still do in real life, haha).
I have goals for this year, but it’s going to be a busy one for me, to say the least, so I’m not really sure what I’ll be able to accomplish. I plan to finish as much fanfiction as I can, but I want to make my fiction a priority as I’d like to finish two books before giving birth (or at least have one done and another rough draft). I plan to keep my online presence minimal as it is a distraction, but know that I love and appreciate all of you who have been supportive of me and those who’ve been my friends. Thank you! I hope I can continue to put out works for all of you, finish some things, and participate in sporadic events. And know that my love for Everlark carries on (although my husband has vetoed any THG-related names for the boys-at least the obvious ones, haha).
Happy 2023!
All the best,
M

Katniss (fifty) & Peeta (fifty) have two children, Asher (eighteen) and Pearl (fourteen). Upon his eighteenth birthday, Asher insists on taking to the capitol to live with his godmother, Effie Trinket, and ‘find himself’. shortly after, Peeta receives a call and is urged, by the youngest son of commander boggs, to align the Mellarks with a political movement for the first time since the war. They take meeting in the capitol, using it as a chance to check up on their child, and find he’s started a singing career… amongst other surprises. Rebirth is mostly a family & political drama that features Katniss & Peeta as parents and a long-term married couple. It contains fluff, healing and a cannon trans character.

What are you updating next?
I won't be updating my works in progress like Promise Me, Little Brother, Golden Cages until Thanksgiving break. I hope to also update Hitting the Target and Christmas for Three during Christmas break. Then I'll be updating PMLB and GC again in the first two weeks of January.
Tumblr media
Those stories are complex and require my full attention when writing, which I'm not able to devote right now because I'm working a hell of a lot more this year. My boss was diagnosed with cancer and she needs extra help from all the other teachers, including me since we're understaffed. In addition to that, my work is requiring me to get more online credit hours and certifications to teach higher grade levels. So I am doing both work and online schooling, plus taking care of my family and there's no way I can do all that plus writing without losing my mind. So unfortunately my fanfiction hobby will have to take a back seat to my other priorities for now. Sorry to all the readers who've been waiting. I wish I got paid to write Everlark crack fics all day but 🤷‍♀️ I don't.
Until Thanksgiving break, in my spare time I will be answering tumblr writing prompts as they come into my inbox.
Thank you for your patience 👍
