2023 Movie Reviews
(films I watched between January and June)
5 stars
Puss 'n Boots The Last Wish (2023): Gorgeous animation, solid antagonists, and I loved the message.
Everest (2015): A disaster film but one that is both well-made and based on a real event, the 1996 expedition. There were a lot of characters to keep track of so I did get lost a few times but the emotional moments hit, especially the ending.
4 stars
John Wick 4 (2023): a mostly satisfying climax to the series, even if some of the scenes went on a little too long. New characters were great and I would love to see more of them if they return in the wider series now that John's story is seemingly done.
3 stars
DnD Honor Among Thieves (2023): A lot of fun, really liked the characters, even if some arcs felt underdeveloped.
Tranformers RotB (2023): Better than the weaker Bayformers entries but didn't have the same heart as Bumblebee (2018). The characters, aside from the human leads, felt a little underwritten and fight scenes just didn't have the same weight (not sure if it's a CGI problem or a choreography problem).
The Watcher (2000): Keanu Reeves plays a serial killer and it's strangely compelling, especially his interactions with James Spader's lead character. Extra points to the one victim that fights back and almost survives. Rest of the film is very mediocre and marred by early 2000s style editing.
2 stars
Antman Quantumania (2023): a middle of the road MCU film, not much more to it than that. Which is pretty disappointing after I loved the first two, this one just didn't have the same heart. Villain was cool at least, though I'm not sure he's interesting enough to be the new arc villain of the MCU. Definitely felt like the film was cut up in post-production.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008): A pretty lackluster remake that recontextualizes fear of nuclear war into fear of global warming but doesn't portray that message as well. Keanu Reeves' version of Klaatu works surprisingly well; he's much colder than the original and just the right level of unsettling that fits with the difference in his mission. Wish the rest of the film was better because I actually like the updated ideas.
The Rain Killer (1990): A noir-esque film that just doesn't work. Characters act in borderline nonsensical ways that accidentally make it compelling in that I was trying to figure out motives but that doesn't make it satisfying. Horny and generally mysogonistic and the story isn't good enough to make up for it.
1 star
The Legend of Hercules (2014): Scott Adkins as Amphitryon is the one bright spark in this because he's just having fun as an over the top villain. Shame the rest of the film is bland and boring and just generally a lacking re-telling of the Hercules myth (I swear they made changes that make it feel more Christian and I don't know how to feel about that).

Mr and Mrs Mountain: In Conversation with Steve and Jo Harrington
(National Geographic, 1993)
I sit down with the Harringtons on a sunny day in December in the living room of their Boulder Colorado home. They’ve just moved in, and they apologize for the few stray boxes still littering the dark wood floors.
“We’re not used to having all this space,” admits Steve Harrington, going on to describe how he and his wife spent most of the last three years living in sublets, tents, and the errant hostel, jumping from Boulder, where they’ve decided to call home, to various parts of the world for an awe-inspiring roster of expeditions. But their most frequently-visited location is Everest, of course.
“We leave around mid-March and can usually expect to be back in June. It’s become a pretty well-oiled machine by now.” What Harrington is referring to is their expedition outfit, Summit Trek, that has been in business since 1991. It’s 1993 when I sit down with the Harringtons, and they’re confirming their client list for an Everest expedition… in 1996. The next three years have already been all booked up. Why, you ask, does this young yet affable couple have a veritable waitlist to join their outfit? It’s simple, they’ve never lost a single client on any of their ascents, a rare feat for repeat Everest expedition guides.
“We really take a lot of pride in the safety of our trips. There’s more and more outfits every year that are willing to take clients up Everest, but it’s always been the getting back down that’s the tricky part,” says Jo Harrington, sitting on the arm of their worn leather couch, her arm draped loosely over her husband’s shoulders. She carries herself with a great deal more poise than her twenty-six years may allow her, a sort of wry steel to the way she speaks, chin tilted down, daunting and demure at the same time, as if Catherine Hepburn and Clint Eastwood had a lovechild with a particular athletic prowess. She wears her hair in two short braids, flyaways framing sharp eyes and dark brows. In a pair of rumpled khaki cargo pants and a thermal with the patagonia logo stitched into the chest (she has been sponsored by the brand for four years now), there is still a strange elegance to her, carried in quick hand gestures and a permanently rasped voice. First brought into the climbing world’s consciousness at the age of sixteen for taking home gold in the 1983 Climbing National Championships in her age division, Harrington, nee Taylor, would go on to rack up an impressive resume of climbs. She currently has conquered five of the seven continental summits, and still holds the women’s speed record for climbing El Cap.
“I’m going for Steve’s record the next time I get out to Yosemite,” quips Jo while her husband grins up at her. He currently holds the men’s speed record on El Cap.
Indeed, the Harringtons have become darlings of the climbing world, meeting in 1990 on both of their first ascents of Everest, and falling into a whirlwind relationship that would see them going into business together within the year as co-guides of their very own expedition outfit.
“I just wouldn’t leave her alone, basically. Asked her where she was going after Katmandhu and she said Boulder, and I said alright, I’m going to follow this woman wherever she leads me.”
“He was easy to be around. To climb with, to talk with, to suffer with. I knew that I could trust him as my partner from the start.” And that trust Jo speaks to seems to be the secret ingredient to what has made their outfit so successful.
“For an ascent to go as well as it can, there has to be almost seamless communication between guides. There can’t be any doubt that you have each other’s backs, that you’re going to do your job to the best of your ability because that’s the level of care and respect you have for each other,” says Steve, tucking a long brown lock of hair behind his ear. He is the picture of a dirtbag, reformed (his words), with his long hair and single silver hoop in his ear, a perpetual tan to his skin from all the years spent out in the weather, a ruggedly bright smile and dark eyes that crinkle knowingly as he speaks. He plays with the wedding band on his left ring finger, spinning it around as he talks with a quiet confidence. Harrington rose up in the climbing world through a sort of scrappy perseverance, spending his teen years hoofing it around the United States and climbing whatever he could get his hands on as fast as he could. Besides El Cap, he currently holds the speed record for the Moose’s Tooth in Alaska, as well as for Kings Peak in Utah. These days, he’s less interested in speed than he is in altitude.
“There’s no going fast on something like Everest, not if you want to come back down in one piece.” Jo nods at her husband’s words, and it is clear that this couple holds a deep respect for the mountain they summit every year, with a group of nine people that pay them to lead them to the peak. It would seem this respect is also part of what has brought them so much success as expedition guides, with Outside Magazine declaring Summit Trek as the “premier” Everest outfit for climbers who want the best of the best experience on the mountain. The going rate for an individual to join one of their expeditions certainly reflects this reputation. Excluding airfare and personal equipment, it will run you $75,000 to join a Summit Trek expedition. For context, this is almost double what most outfits charge, and $10,000 more than what Adventure Consultants, one of the other more reputable outfits, ask. When asked about this price point, Jo smiles.
“We understand that it’s a steep price we’re asking, but it reflects the quality of the experience we provide. People also have to understand that a good portion of that money is put right back into the business for permits and equipment. You get what you pay for, and when it comes to something like Everest, I’d like to think people are willing to pay more in order to get more out of the experience.” Her argument certainly seems to stand. Currently, with the additional help of infamous climber Eddie Munson as their other co-guide, respected mountaineer Robin Buckley running base camp communication, and climber-turned-physician Nancy Wheeler, the Summit Trek team has successfully taken 27 people to the Everest summit and brought them back down safely, with plans to take another 27 up in the next three years.
I asked the couple, who have now been married for just shy of a year, what it’s been like working together in such a dangerous context. They both seem to find this question amusing, sharing a quick
glance between them before Jo answers the question.
“I know I wouldn’t do this work with anyone else. We’re partners in every sense of the word and I love getting to do this work with my best friend.” Steve rests a hand on her knee, nodding and adding his own thoughts.
“Yes, it’s dangerous, but we’re a particular kind of people that seek out that kind of danger. We get to see and do crazy things together, it’s amazing.   I think we’re very lucky to get to do this.”
My last question for the seemingly invincible couple, do they see themselves slowing down any time soon? Jo laughs.
“Well, you can only go up that mountain so many times before it takes its pound of flesh from you. We’re certainly not going to do this forever, and I think we’re definitely starting to think about putting down more roots for the future. But for now, we really love the work we do.”

i learned that Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge is the first person to complete 'The Three Poles challenge' (reaching the North Pole, South Pole and the summit of Mount Everest) - on foot. He accomplished these between 1990-1994. Afterward, he established Norway's biggest publishing house of nonfiction (x)

Prepare Yourselves For September, Because It's Time For...
Tumblr media
I finally decided how I'm going to approach September's Hexplore challenge. Instead of going all-in on a more gonzo approach to a variety of vintage cartoons in the Merry Melodies and Looney Toons eras, I opted to reframe this month's cartoon as something from the early 1990s that was trying to capitalize on the success more established cartoons like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This is a show that is a blatant cash-grab that hopes to carve out a foothold in toy store shelves for a season or two before moving on to something else. As such, I felt it fitting to modify only slightly a promotional image for the cartoon Street Sharks.
Through the magic of a bunch of arbitrary dice rolls, here's a little bit about the show:
It's set mostly in Fresno, California, in 1992 and designed to appeal to the 8-12 year-old boy demographic. Like many other shows designed to sell toys, the continuity is nearly non-existent between episodes. I have never been to Fresno, and thus the plot points will likely lean into fabrications and poorly-informed constructions because the "show's writers didn't have time to research during the tight production timelines." However, I'd like the show to have some pro-environmental messages like Captain Planet to offset the cynical marketing of such a show.
Because I don't know anything about Fresno other than reading a few paragraphs of the the city's wikipedia page, I made a series of random tables to tell me where the primary location of the episode will be set. And because it's a cartoon that is not constrained by film crew logistics or real-life geography, a good chunk of episodes will take place in various locales that are decidedly different from Fresno (also described without research to really get into the thrall of unchecked capitalism).
For each episode, I'm going to roll to see if it takes place in/around Fresno, somewhere else in the world, or in an exotic/unusual location like a moon base. Here are the tables I've created to tell me where to set the episode:
Fresno
Construction Site
Mall
Sewer
City Hall
Skyscraper
TV Station
Bank
Factory
Garbage Dump
Sierra Nevada Mountains
Museum
Forest
Subway
Zoo

A quick list of rabbit holes I will need to actively avoid henceforth because they always result in me feeling bleak / anxious / depressed.
Everest deaths (especially David Sharp)
Actually, any stories about people who die during extreme sports (cave diving, mountaineering etc, also includes stories about surviving being lost at sea or in a desert or something like that)
Delta P stories
Modern true crime (modern = anything after 1960)
Documentaries on any of the rockstars from 1960 to 1990
Reaction videos on youtube
The problem is not that I don't find these topics interesting, it's just that my brain seems to react badly to binges of these topics. For example, for the last two days I have been frantically consuming videos about the 1996 Everest disaster. But like every time I've fixated on Everest before I clicked off of the last video last night feeling oddly...lonely and uninspired.

I went down a Mount Everest rabbit hole from that anon omg…
George Mallory and Andrew Irvine climbed Everest in 1924 and went missing on the descent and presumed dead and then in the 1990’s they found Mallory’s body and even though it was 70 years later it was preserved because of the cold
They never found out if they made it to the summit or not cause Andrew Irvine had the camera and his body hasn’t been found (yet) maybe one day…
ANON 💜 I am doing a read more for this tragedy.
There was this Smithsonian article from 2012 that mentioned Green Boots as well as David Sharp who rested in the cave and his body froze in place.
Forty plus people passed him by, assuming him dead, but he was very much alive, just slowly freezing to death. Someone eventually heard his moans and realized he was not dead, but by then it was too late to help with oxygen or to get him to stand again.
Then there was Francys Arsentiev, the first woman to reach the summit without the aid of bottled oxygen, but a lot don't consider it a successful ascent since she never made it down.
She got separated from the group and her husband noticed, choosing to go and look for her, despite the dangers. He found a team of hikers who found her, but abandoned her when their oxygen was depleted. She was found by others, but by then she was too far gone to save, and her husband also was found a year later, his body lower down as he apparently fell to his death.
Just... tragic. Truly.

Climate Action
Tumblr media
According to the University of Colorado, " Climbers have turned Everest into a garbage dump. The trash problem first became evident in the 1980s and 1990s, but the increasing number of climbers, paired with changing climate conditions, is making the issue more urgent."

THE FLYING RED HORSE MAGNOLIA'S FLYING RED HORSE When the 400-foot-tall Magnolia Petroleum building opened in 1922, it was the city’s first skyscraper – and tallest building west of the Mississippi River. With 29 floors and seven elevators, the Magnolia building towered over the nearby Adolphus Hotel, built in 1913. The Magnolia also was first high rise in the United States to have air conditioning, according to the management company that acquired the building in 1997. Today, with much of the original architecture’s classical design and gold leaf restored in 1999, the Dallas Magnolia Hotel has become a “boutique hotel” blending its past with modern amenities. After the 1922 opening, a local reporter described the Magnolia – which cost the oil company $4 million to build – as “a great peg driven into the ground holding Dallas in its place.” In 1925, when Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) acquired Magnolia Petroleum Company, the Dallas headquarters building was included. Nine years later Pegasus would land on the roof. The flying red horses began their journey in 1911, when a Vacuum Oil Company subsidiary in Cape Town, South Africa, first trademarked the Pegasus logo. Based in Rochester, New York, Vacuum Oil had built a successful petroleum lubricants business around an 1869 patent by its founder, Hiram Everest, long before gasoline was even a branded product. At first, a stylized red gargoyle advertised the company, which produced the earliest petroleum-based lubricants for horse-drawn carriages and steam engines. The Pegasus trademark proved to be a more enduring image. In Greek mythology, Pegasus – a winged horse – carried thunderbolts for Zeus. By 1931 growth of the automobile industry expanded the Vacuum Oil product lineup to include Pegasus Spirits and Mobilgas – later simplified to Mobil. When Standard Oil of New York and Vacuum Oil combine to form Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, the new company adopted the familiar winged trademark, as does an affiliate, Magnolia Petroleum. It took a year to build the rotating 35-foot by 40-foot Pegasus sign. It first beamed its red neon glow in 1934, welcoming the first annual meeting to be held in Dallas by the American Petroleum Institute. For decades the emblem slowly rotated above the growing city as corporate consolidations and mergers changed Socony-Vacuum ownership. In 1955 the name of the company changed to Socony Mobil Oil; in 1966 became just Mobil Oil.
A neon Pegasus displayed at the 1939 New York World’s Fair found its way to a Mobil gas station in Casa Linda, Texas, and later to the Old Red Museum of Dallas County History & Culture – where it’s on exhibit today. In 1974 the petroleum icon’s motor ground to a halt. Mobile Oil moved out of the Magnolia building three years later and sold the aging skyscraper and glowing but unmoving sign to the city of Dallas. Twenty-years later, Pegasus’ neon lights finally went out. As a Denver-based developer restored and transformed the deteriorating Magnolia building into a luxurious 330 room hotel in the late 1990s, a group of patrons and corporate partners joined in to bring the broken and rusty Pegasus sign back to life. They raised more than $600,000 for the project Project Pegasus targeted New Year’s Eve of 1999 and dawn of the new millennium to reintroduce Dallas citizens to their petroleum heritage landmark. Restoration of the 8,000-pound sign proved challenging. The derrick-like tower structure was reparable and the old mechanical rotation system could be updated with new technology. But time and weather had damaged the porcelain coated steel signage and neon tubing. New 16-gauge steel panels had to be cut, using the originals as templates. Only two facilities in the United States were large enough to accommodate baking the emblematic red porcelain onto the new panels; fortunately, both were in Dallas. More than 1,000 feet of new neon tubing was required to trace the familiar outlines as craftsmen and technicians remained faithful to the original. The efforts of all were rewarded at midnight on December 31, 1999, when fireworks and millennium celebrations welcomed Pegasus back to the Dallas skyline. Problems led to the sign being turned off in March 2013 until restored in June by Starlite Sign of Denton, Texas. Although cost of fixing the machinery that once turned the structure was too high to attempt, even stationary, “the new lights will glow from dusk until dawn,” said a city official. The public art manager for the Office of Cultural Affairs manages its maintenance. Kay Kallos, manager of the department proclaimed, “The Pegasus sign is a beloved icon of the city of Dallas.” Courtesy Historical Society of American Oil and Gas."
