Day 15: Tickle Fight

A/N: Little mighty nein snippet of a friendly spar between Molly and Beau that turns into a tickle fight

Beau nearly has Molly on the floor, when Jester betrays her and changes the direction of the fight with just two words.

“Try tickling!” Jester suggests excitedly with a cheer from the sidelines. 

“No—” Beau starts, and Molly makes a happy little sound, wriggling his arms and trying to get a grip on her. “No no no no no- don’t you even- naHA get OFF!” Beau cries. “Fuck you! Ahah no no NO—”

Beau goes rigid for a few long moments before struggling away from Mollymauk in an awkward dance. “No— you bahahahastard! Stop!” 

“Of course, soon as you admit defeat!

“NnnHH- no!” Beau huffs out just before she breaks down into full on laughter, her knees buckling and sending both her and Molly to the floor. 

There’s a scramble, limbs flying everywhere as Mollymauk fights to keep his advantage. Both of them shout as they laugh and tussle across the floor. Beau deflects a hand only for the other to appear at her other side, and then once she has them both a tail flicks over the back of her neck. She growls in frustration and tries to grab all of Molly’s extremities at once. He gives her a goofy, vicious grin. 

Molly is pushing his way back onto Beau and tickling again when a finger flicks up Molly’s foot and he jolts unexpectedly. Flipping around, Molly scans for where the intruding tickle came from, he has Beau’s hands preoccupied up here… Fjord grins back at him triumphantly. Yasha is smiling too, a little stern wiggle of her eyebrow and her finger scratches down his sole again. Molly yelps, before his foot is snatched up into the crook of Yasha’s arm. 

“Wait—” Molly gulps.

Beau cheers as Molly flails off of her, trying to twist his leg out of Yasha’s grip. To his dismay, Fjord reaches for his other ankle and hastily tows it in. 

“Shitshitshit no— I-I was winning!” Molly complains, laughter edging into his voice. 

Beau scrambles all the way free of a now distracted Mollymauk and turns and starts to dig into his ribs in retaliation. Molly shrieks at the unexpectedly quick turn of his luck.

“Tickle fight!!!!” Jester shrieks with a huge smile before pile driving her way into the fray. 

“Nonono wait! F-fuck you! Fuck you fuckyoufuckyoufuck—” Beau’s voice cuts off into a bitten off squeal of laughter. Mercifully, her hands draw back from tormenting Molly to try to protect herself from the unexpected turn of events. He kicks his way free and launches himself backward to pluck at Yasha’s ribs. 

Caleb and Nott give each other a soft smile, staying out of the fray for the time being.

PoliZ’s WIP Update - 22 Nov 2023

Combining last week & this – I was on vacation and on the go, so didn’t manage much in terms of a word count.  I touched 3  fics (3 WIPs)  for a total of  1139 words.

On Ao3, I posted: 

No Sensation to Compare With This -  1990’s AU with Rhodey and Tony meeting Carol and Maria at a bar just off base before a test flight.  (Tony/Maria endgame)

A Close Call - pre-War Stucky with pining!Bucky and love confessions.

Beaten to the Punch -  WinterIron College AU - Tony & Bucky as camp counselors with mutual pining.  

I have  18 semi-active WIPs  😬 with my  current  deadlines being  the WinterIron Bingo which wraps on 16 Dec and Stucky’Verse Bingo which wraps on 22 Dec.  

See  below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc.  As always, feel free to send me   prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding  any of these projects  or any other WIPs I’ve got out there.   Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!

Seek & Destroy Collab

After reading @psychiccatpanda‘s amazing   Morguna and the Green Queen, I  got the itch to explore the Soldier’s POV and talked  Faustie into   collab’ing with me!  We’re working on a new part of the series, and I’ve  contributed about 900 words towards the  2500-ish we have so far.   Going to see if I can squeeze any of my BBB squares into this fic.

WinterIron Bingo  - [WIB_R1]   (Ends 16 Dec 2023)

I have twenty-one  fills completed for this brand-new bingo event that I’m helping mod! 

* B column squares for the Iron Soldier badge (complete a bingo with a single work). – Alpha Tony Stark, “That was not my intention.”, James Rhodes, Alpine loves Tony and Blind date.   Need to figure out an angle on this - possible remix of  A Sugar-Coated Pill?

* G4 - AU: College Students –  Posted  Beaten to the Punch this morning - WinterIron mutual pining College AU  that crosses over with my Volunteering Together square.  It came in at 553 words.

N3 - FREE - filling this with  Somewhere To Turn - a WinterIron No Powers AU with mall security!Bucky and  young!runaway!Tony. It’s crossing over with my BBB Cold square -  I’ve tweaked it a bit since posting on Tumblr (coming in at 881 words) and it will go up on Ao3 1 Dec.   

* O5 - Gentle – use this poem as inspiration?

Stucky’Verse Bingo Round 1 - [SVB_R1]   (Ends 22 Dec)

Thirteen  fills, two WIPs and a couple of ideas.

* A1 - Harem - crossover with CABB Secret/Forbidden Relationship - Bucky and shrimpy!Steve are both concubines who love each other more than their lord. I poked at this a little for 71 words.

* B4 - Sugar Daddy -  looking for inspiration - combining with CABB  Nov Adoptable: Sugar Baby.  Possibly shrimpy!Steve and beefy!Bucky?   

* A4 - Fairy Tale Curse  - this seems custom-made for a continuation of Beyond the Beast😁  Nothing written yet, other than some Vague Ideas.  

* C3 - FREE -  probably using this for Chapter 2 of   Half of the Flesh and Blood That Makes Me Whole   - a Bucky POV remix of at least the first part of Take What Was Wrong (And Make it Right), which is currently sitting at  52 words.  I’m expecting at least one more chapter, possibly two, depending on how far I want to take the remix.   

C5 - Last Resort -  Posted  A Close Call  to Ao3 last Friday.  A pre-war Stucky ficlet with protective!pining!Bucky - also filled my HHB  Dealing with Extreme Cold,  and WFB -  Huddling for warmth squares  (250 words) along with Whumptober Delirium prompt. It came in at 827 words. 

Bucky Barnes Bingo  - [BBB_R5]   (Ends 10 Jan 2024)

I’ve got  sixteen fills,  four WIPs,   and a couple more Vague ideas.

* B5 - Cold  - see WIB  FREE square

* U3 - Fireplace -  Working on a 1980′s No Powers WinterIron fic set at a ski lodge where Tony’s being wooed by poetry and love letters that Bucky wrote to someone else.   Started poking at this as a crossover with a Love Letters prompt and it’s sitting at 129 words.

* C2 - Yelena Belova–   The plan is to use this prompt in the next chapter of Peresmešnik,  (aka Three Avengers and a Baby), which is currently sitting at 1303 words (600-ish of which are mine).

* C3 - FREE  - the October BBB Discord party resulted in a hilarious Mob AU communal story  (mobster!Bucky & clueless!Steve plus Clint&Natasha&Scott shenanigans)   that several of us did/are going to contribute to Rashomon-style.  

* C5 - Marriage of Convenience/Pretend Couple -  next chapter of   Lady Natasha’s Consort and Lord Steve’s Companion.    Got a spark of an idea the other day that might get me a bit further on this fic.  

* K3 - Magic -  Aro!Bucky healing with a kiss idea?

* Y3 - Alpine  - see WIB Iron Soldier combo.

* Y4 - Forgotten Things -   using this for Chapter 4 of   You Can’t Stop It With a Gun  - it’s sitting at  116 words at the moment.

* May Adopted - Insomnia - finally got this filled with The Dead of Night, which also filled a Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF211 An Old Friend] along with my JBB FREE square. It came in at 317 words and will post to Ao3 before this event ends.

* August Adopted: Take the Shot - sounds like a WinterHawk fic to me… maybe cross over with JBB Touch-starved?  Whumptober/Fictober possibilities as well. 

Tony Stark Bingo Round 7  - [TSB_R7]   (ends 15 Feb)

Seventeen  fills and one WIPs, with a couple of ideas in play.  

* S1 - Galaxy - possibly use in final chapter of   Never More to Go Astray ?  

* T2 - KINK: Cock-blocking 'bots -  I still want to combine this with  the  Fictober Day 27: prompt   "I don't know if they will accept this."   

* T3 - A pairing you've never done -  Posted   No Sensation to Compare With This  – inspired by @rebelmeg’s  Wingmen and Airmen, Flirting and Flying  - it’s a remix/spinoff of the first chapter, where Tony flirts with Maria Rambeau while Rhodey and Carol get to know one another better. It came in at 1093 words. 

* T5 - Shawarma - possible crossover with SAUB Canon Divergence – Battle of New York-related?

* A2 - KINK: Concubine - possible crossover with SAUB Gentle Dom

* A3 -  FREE  – @SomeSortofItalianRoast and I are looking at collabing on a  Steve/Tony/Scott fic - maybe throw in a Comfortember prompt?  

* R5 - Doppelganger/Evil Twins -   The Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF214 Broken Mirror] got me at least a good start on the idea I’ve been playing with for this square. no but for real, this was an incredibly fun creative exercise and I'm really proud of what I accomplished. I didn't achieve all my goals, but I wrote more over the past several months than I have in literally years, and that feels really good!

if I had to do it all over again, I would definitely use my time a little more wisely (planning and time management are... not my strong suits). I would try to be more comfortable with cranking out an actual rough draft and then going back for editing and polishing (a constant struggle for me). and I would try to be more strategic about my fills – tbh I am pretty disappointed that I didn't manage to actually get a bingo, and I feel a little foolish for not doing something with the free space!

I also wish I hadn't had to pad my card with WIP snippets at the last minute, but hey – writing is writing, and I'm both proud of the bits I shared and committed to finishing the WIPs! almost every square on my card gave me some kind of inspiration, and I'm sure I'll be using the remaining prompts in the future.

all in all, Dreamling Bingo 2023 was an amazing experience and I can't wait to see what this fandom does next! @dreamlingbingo thank you SO MUCH for all the hard work y'all did during this event!

Saab presents strategic defense solutions at LAAD

Saab will present at LAAD Defence & Security 2023 highly technological defense solutions, with emphasis on the Gripen fighter and the MSHORAD anti-aircraft defense system.

Saab, a leading company in defense and security technologies, will participate in LAAD Defence & Security 2023, which will take place between April 11 and 14, in Rio de Janeiro. During the event, the company will present a broad portfolio of state-of-the-art air, land and naval solutions.

Saab maintains a partnership with the Brazilian Armed Forces and seeks to expand its strategic performance in the region, as highlighted by Marianna Silva, general director of Saab in Latin America:

"Saab has a strong history of cooperation with the Brazilian Armed Forces. In addition to the Gripen program, we can highlight our anti-aircraft defense and training and simulation solutions, and advanced information monitoring and fusion systems, used in the Integrated Border Monitoring System (SISFRON)," explains Marianna Silva. "We want to expand this strategic partnership and we are excited to present our cutting-edge solutions for Latin America," he adds.

The Gripen E multimission fighter, called F-39 Gripen by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), will again be one of the great highlights in LAAD. The full-size replica of the hunt will be open for public visitation during the event without the need for prior scheduling. The aircraft is a symbol of the largest technology transfer program from Sweden to Brazil, with a great contribution to the development of the national defense industry. The first four fighters, of the 36 aircraft acquired by the Brazilian Air Force, are already in operation in the country.

Another great highlight of Saab in LAAD will be the low-height mobile anti-aircraft defense system (Mobile Short-Range Air Defense - MSHORAD), an anti-aircraft defense solution with a high degree of mobility to accompany mechanized and armored troops in displacement, which combines one or more RBS 70 firing units and a Giraffe 1X radar, interconnected to Saab' At the booth, Saab demonstrates the possibility of integrating an RBS70 NG shooting unit into the Brazilian Army's Armored Medium Personnel Transport Vehicle (VBTP MSR) Guarani.

The Giraffe 1X prototype will also be on display. The short-range, transportable and multi-mission three-dimensional X-band radar can be easily unfolded in various environments, from terrestrial (fixed or mobile) to naval platforms, in the Sea Giraffe 1X version, as well as stationary positions and any type of C2 structure.

The public will be able to get to know other solutions, such as Saab's ground combat systems such as the Carl-Gustaf® M4, the new generation of portable and multifunctional weaponry used in the protection of troops and combat facilities, and the NLAW, an anti-tank missile system, both used in numerous NATO member countries in their operations.

For the naval sector, the company brings advanced solutions for maritime defense, such as the Mining Countermeasures Ship (MCMV) that performs a water scan capable of detecting threats from underwater mines. The complete solution includes the use of untried autonomous vehicles to remove and disarm mines.

A/N: starts in reference to [C2E122] when Caleb polymorphs into a golden retriever and gets scritches and belly rubs from Veth and Yasha ❤️ see also reference to the talks machina when Liam was asked how Caleb felt about polymorphing into a creature with low intelligence for the first time and he said (paraphrasing) He loved it. He is so smart and smart people are unhappy, and so with an 8 intelligence for the first time, it was like this happiness and lightness that he had never been able to really experience before. It has been on his mind since he changed back. He can’t stop thinking about it. He’s gonna have to do it again some time.

An uneasy chill drifts through the air as the Nein find themselves with some questionable guests in Caleb’s tower. An unexpected turn of events, bringing them close to people that they are quite confident cannot be trusted. When it is time for bed, no one wants to spend the night alone. They may not be completely safe, they may have an unclear, potentially quite dangerous path ahead. But for now, tonight, they are together, they are okay, they are home. The Nein gather up for the night in Yasha’s room, better together after all - they could set up the dome, sleep in shifts, keep an eye out for any suspicious goings-on from their guests. They take a vote. They’re going to see how this plays out - not rush in, weapons and firebolts blazing as they would have a few months prior.

As they gather in close, whispering about what to do next, Caleb sits off to the side of the group, fiddling with his thumbs, the dome having just been set up. Veth sits on the floor, leaning against Yasha’s bed. Caduceus sits on the other side of Veth, night time tea in hand. Yasha sits on the edge of her mattress, watching each of her compatriots with a concern in her eyes. Beau leans against Jester, who leans against Fjord, a few feet from the halfling.

Caleb brings his hands up to his face, rubbing his temples. He slaps his cheeks a few times. With a quiet, “Ja, ok,” and a mumbled incantation, a fluffy golden retriever is before them instead of the familiar human. Dogleb pads over to Veth and lets out a quiet whine. He circles once, twice, and lays down near her legs, plopping his snout on her ankles. His eyes drift closed, and Veth regards him with a warm smile on her face. She reaches down to pet his head. Veth turns to look at the group, admiration in her eyes as they all fight back an urge to “awww” loudly. She starts patting Dogleb on the head, behind the ears. He makes a happy sound and leans into her hand, she always finds it interesting which parts of Caleb seem to change (and which become more clear - more Caleb-y) when he polymorphs like this. Her other hand comes down and begins scratching and carding through the fur along his back.

Yasha - unable to curb the desire to join them any longer - sits down beside the pair and reaches over, her hands covering a much wider area as she starts to scritch his ears and back and legs. Dogleb is making all sorts of happy dog sounds, his tail wagging a mile a minute. “Aww, you’re so cute. Who’s a good boy?” Yasha smiles as she coos at him.

Dogleb’s tail wags faster, he starts to roll to his side. “Oh, do you want your belly rubbed? You want me to rub your belly? Yes you do. Yes you do. Oh you’re so sweet.” Yasha’s fingers thread through strawberry golden fur as she scratches lightly and pleasantly down Dogleb’s back to his side and toward his partially exposed belly. Yasha is lumbering over him now, encouraging him with praise as he rolls onto his back, paws in the air, head splayed back on the floor. His tail beats against the floor, a metronome keeping an ever-increasing tempo. Around them, the dome is filling with the quiet laughter and sweet whisperings of the Nein.

Veth sits up a bit more and joins Yasha, putting one hand on the soft, fluffy dog belly with a claw-like motion, scratching away at the fluff and fur there. Dogleb melts into both of them along with the floor. She leans toward the hulking barbarian-turned- professional-tummy-scratcher. She scritches under Dogleb’s chin with her other hand as he flops lazily side to side on the ground, squirming pleasantly. His back leg begins kicking in the air as they find a good spot on the side of his tummy.

“Just precious!” Veth chuckles as she acknowledges the shaking limb. She pulls Dogleb in to lie between them, still partly on her lap, as she and Yasha make moves to cuddle up for sleep on the ground with their fluffy prize. The others, more than likely, will join them soon.

“Don’t lay on your back Caleb, that’s weird!” Jester teases with a snicker. His back leg continues to kick rhythmically into the air as he spreads out, Veth and Yasha co-scritching all over his belly. “Oh man, Caleb’s flashing everyone!” Jester laughs and reaches over and scratches behind Dogleb’s floppy ear, joining the other two next to Veth.

Beau slides over to the other side of the group, joining Yasha and pressing into her thigh. She reaches over and scribbles at Dogleb’s belly, smiling.

Curling around their fluffy wizard, the group slowly melts into a pile of bodies strewn comfortably between and across each other. Veth has a face full of dog chest. Yasha has a hand still lightly stroking his belly. Beau is curled up on Yasha’s other side. Jester has an arm around Veth that reaches up just enough to softly scritch behind Dogleb’s ear. Fjord rests with his head in Jester’s lap, Caduceus is wrapped around Fjord and Jester’s other side. A slow rhythm befalls their breathing - calm, safe, together, and starts to keep time with the now-slowing tail-beat.

They decide not to all sleep at once, just in case. Yasha stays up for the first shift, Beau groggily insists on staying up with her (maybe so they can kiss a little bit, who can blame her).

It seems to be a losing game for the monk, as she curls herself into Yasha’s lap and keeps a hand scritching at Dogleb’s belly - the absentminded motion is surely enough to keep her conscious. He seems to relax into the feeling.

Nothing out of the ordinary happens during the night.

About an hour into the watch, Yasha startles at a whoosh of magic as Caleb regains his human form, jostling her and Veth a little as he shifts back. Yasha smiles with a light laugh. Beau’s half-asleep and her hand is still on Caleb’s stomach, wiggling every so often. Each time she does, mumbling into Yasha, Caleb squirms a bit - just a flinch here or there. Yasha looks up to his face and sees him smiling in his sleep. Veth is wrapped along Caleb’s now very-undoglike side, her hand on his chest. With a few sleepy mumbles, everyone’s drifting off again.

Yasha moves her hand from next to Beau’s, still on Caleb’s belly, and scritches her fingers again, as she’d been doing to his dog form for the past hour. She feels Caleb’s muscles twitch under her. She tilts her head with a curious half-smile, attention on him, and watches the small smile on his face. She wiggles her fingers against his stomach. His eyes scrunch and he huffs out a quick breath, almost a laugh. She smiles, tracing her fingers slowly and lightly over his stomach. Caleb’s form shivers, and she can’t quite tell if he’s still fully asleep or not. His breathing remains slow, and his eyes remain closed. Her other hand starts to mirror the pattern on Beau’s back.

The monk shivers pleasantly, this one is definitely semi-conscious. “Mmm- feels nice Yash.” She leans in and nuzzles into Yasha’s side. “You’re not trying to make me fall asleep, are you?” She yawns.

Yasha smiles gently. “No. But if you’re tired, you should. I can wake up Caduceus when it’s time.”

“Nah- I wanna stay up with you.” Beau mumbles, slurring into her side, and wraps her arms all the way around Yasha’s middle.

A few hours pass, and Yasha spends not a small part of them tracing softly over Beau’s back and Caleb’s middle. She doesn’t want to keep them up or startle them, just comfort. Her nails move slow, tracing gently. Beau fades in and out of sleep, continuing to lose her battle with conscious thought - Yasha’s both amazing and not-helping, as Beau loses her fight with the light tracing and tickling along her back. She wants to melt.

Eventually, Yasha turns her head and whispers loudly over the pile of friends. “Hey, Cad. You up?”

Caduceus nods his head slowly as he opens his eyes. “Sure.” He sits up, stretches his arms, and gives Yasha a content smile.

She smiles back, then looks around at the group, a hint of sadness in her eyes. A few breaths pass between them. Fjord snorts an almost snore in his sleep, a smile grows on their faces in soft appreciation. “We have to protect this.” She exhales, eyes flicking up to meet Caduceus’ gaze.

Caduceus nods, understanding. “Get some rest, I’ll keep an eye out.” He gives her a wink as she rearranges herself within Beau’s limbs, ending up with her head on Caleb’s thighs, Beau wrapped around her. Yasha drifts off happily in the embrace of her family.

Caduceus finds his watch goes uneventfully. Nothing nefarious seems to be cooking up in the tower, for now at least, despite their guests on the other floor. Caduceus considers the pile of friends beside him. He hums. They needed to have more nights like this, when there is less at stake.

It’s a few hours later when Caduceus wakes Jester for the final watch and curls himself back into the group, one arm looping around Fjord, reaching past to Veth and Caleb. His other arm rests over Jester’s legs.

It starts off easy enough, entertaining herself with her own thoughts and ideas. But patience, self-restraint? Those are not really her virtues. She puffs her bottom lip out in a bit of a pout as she starts to feel boredom set in. Looking up at the amber dome around them, Jester gets inspired. She takes her sketchbook out of her bag and spends her watch using the dim glow of the dome to illuminate the pages. She draws all of her friends sleeping in a big cuddle pile. She draws Yasha and Nott giving Dogleb belly rubs. She draws all of them as different types of dogs. She draws a couple of dicks. She draws a cute little picture of herself and the Traveler. She draws everything that she can think of, everything she enjoys.

The sun is almost peaking above the horizon when the first of her friends begins to stir. Caleb yawns as he comes into consciousness and notices the arms and heads of Beauregard, Yasha, and Veth all around him. Jester watches a small smile grace his lips just before his eyes flutter open. When he does, and sees her looking - Jester notes disapprovingly - his expression schools back to something neutral. “Ah, good morning Jester.”

“Morning Caleb. How did you sleep?”

“Mm. Fine, what about you?”

“Sooo good.” She beams. “Want to see what I drew while you were sleeping?”

Caleb flushes a little, a sheepish smile turning up his lips. “Ja, of course.”

Caleb gets one elbow up under him, careful not to disturb his sleeping companions. He leans in a bit as Jester shows him her various sketches and close ups of their sleeping faces that she cooked up earlier this morning. Caleb follows along, reminding her to whisper when she gets a little excited explaining the drawings and what kind of dog everyone would be.

“Aww.” She coos, pointing to a drawing of him as a dog with Yasha and Veth petting him. “You were so cute last night Caleb, do you want another belly rub?”

Caleb goes bright red. “Was- no.” He squirms beneath the pile of his companions, more aware now that he is weighted down with the head of a sleeping Yasha on his thighs and a Veth curled up beside him.

Jester wiggles closer. “Oh, why not? You seemed like you liked it last night!” She reaches out toward his middle, fingers wiggling exaggeratedly. “Are you worried your belly would be too ticklish when you’re not a dog or something?” Her voice is silly, lilting up at the end. It’s dangerous, like a Venus fly trap, drawing you in with its sweetness.

Caleb watches her, and she watches him back with glee as his panicked eyes slowly widen under her scrutiny. He squirms. “Jester..” He whispers cautiously, trying to sound stern and school his expression despite his beet red face. He opens and closes his mouth a few times before he gets an excuse out. “It is too early to wake everyone up.”

“Are you scared they’ll help me tickle you?”

“Nein!” He nearly shouts but cuts himself off with a whine in the back of his throat. “Jester!” He hisses as she reaches closer, dangerously close to his side. They maintain eye contact for a brief few moments, Caleb’s eyes wide and embarrassed, standing out even more against the dark shade of his face. A few breaths. Jester’s smirk softens to a smile. Caleb soon finds his expression softening as well, and his head falls back softly. His heart races in his chest as he takes a few deep breaths. “Please.” He puts up a hand pleadingly and meets Jester’s eyes. “Not- not right now.”

Jester makes a face as she contemplates. This seems like a reaaaaaally good time to make Caleb laugh and smile and be happy and tease him a little. But, it is pretty early. And everyone else is sleeping, it would be a little rude to wake them up, even if it was for something super fun.

An idea seems to dawn on her if Caleb is reading her expression right. He feels a shiver down his back.

“What about if I just tickle you like, just a litttttttle bit, like this?” She reaches and tickles behind his ears. He squirms and scrunches his shoulders. “I’ll be really nice and gentle and-”

“Ah- hehe- Jester!” His eyes are wide, matching his nervous grin.

“Shhhh, be quiet Caleb. Don’t wake them up!” She scolds with a grin. Jester lightly tickles Caleb’s ears and neck. He squirms more, shaking his head.

“Ehehe- I can’t- no-” Caleb whines, trying to catch Jester’s hand with the one of his that is free. His other arm cradles around Veth. He squeezes her close a bit in his panic as he tries to squirm out of Jester’s way.

Veth blinks awake, a bit confused as to why Caleb keeps squeezing her, and looks up to see him barely stifling giggles while Jester wiggles her fingers all around his neck and shoulders and ears - anywhere she can reach.

“Stop- stop! You’rehehe hehehe going to wahahake them!” Caleb pleads through soft giggles.

“Jester!” Veth scolds, smacking at one of her hands lightly. “He’s right.”

“I mean, technically he would be the one waking them.” She counters, then meets Veth’s soft but stern glare. “Oh, fine.”

She scratches under Caleb’s chin for a moment longer and then finally pulls her hands back. It’s minuscule, but she picks it up when his jaw follows slightly when she pulls away. She thinks she catches something in his eyes, but he closes them too quickly for her to make it out.

He takes a few shaky, deep breaths. Veth readjusts her spot, cuddling back up against him, and to Jester’s delight he flinches when she first curls into his side.

“Okay okay, go ahead and get your precious last minutes of sleep.” Jester sticks out her tongue at them, poking Caleb’s side once more and making him flinch. It takes a tremendous amount of will power to turn her attention back to her sketchbook for the next half hour or so as everyone slowly starts to stir awake.

Bows Only: WE'RE SO BACK!!!!!!!

Ok so apparently the last time I updated was in August? And it's April now... um. Sorry about that? I didn't realize it's been so long TTOTT there hasn't been much to talk about honestly

Actually uhhh scratch that. I didn't update in so long ON PURPOSE. Totally. The reason I didn't was because I didn't want to update again until the curse of Jean was broken. And guess what finally happened B)

But before we get to that, let's start where we left off with our last post... way back in August of 2023...

As we waited with bated breath for the release of Version 4.0, I did manage to get a few more notable acomplishments. Namely...

Childe friendship level 10!

And clearing floor 9 with all 9 stars! (I still cannot do this consistently on this account as I type this btw ._.)

When 4.0 finally dropped, I fist went to wish on Yelan's banner. Things were off to a great start:

We got another stringless! I already had two built up, so I used this one as refinement for one of them.

And then... the shooting star lit up gold, and... well, you know how that went.

Try as I may, and Try as I might, Yelan would not come home. And, in this account's most humiliating L to date...

The banner cycle ended with no Yelan and no Lyney.

Still, I could not afford to simply give up. I still worked hard throughout September, earning primogems and building my characters...

I got this really satisfying set of Daily Commissions once

So like. That kinda makes up for not having Yelan. sure

Also! I decided to test Childe's limits!

And uhhh the date on that one is in September and the date on this next one is in January so. I suppose nothing of interest happened in those months. Makes sense honestly, I had enough to gurantee a 5 star on here so I wasn't quite as desperate for primos and therefore wasn't logging on much... Plus with all the new content that comes with a major version update I was spending more time than usual on my main, leaving less time for this account. But anyway!

In the second half of 4.3 came two very important banners, one for each of my accounts:

And, here on Bows Only, that 50/50 gurantee from the Yelan disaster finally came in use:

After dodging us countless times... in 2.8... in 3.2... in 3.7... Finally... FINALLY!!! We've obtained the most elusive fireworks maker!

Our quest to max ascend all our characters also continues:

I also did Klee's story quest, and something they mentioned at the end really stuck out to me:

...They talk a lot about Ludi Harpastum in this quest, but we still haven't gotten to see that festival in game... Not once...

And it was soon after this that... my computer broke .-. I downloaded genshin on my phone while I waited for the repairs on it to be complete, but mobile genshin fricking sucks so I was only logging onto my main account to do limited time events and that's IT. I wasn't even doing my dailies on there and I was barely even touching Bows Only at all...

And it was only supposed to be a couple of weeks, but things kept getting delayed (They ordered the part they needed. they were sent the wrong one. they sent it back. they got the right part but it was broken. they sent it back. they got the wrong part again--) and my computer was gone for like two months TTOTT So I was stuck on mobile for the entirety of 4.4 and the better part of 4.5...

But eventually my dear puter came back to me (and I deleted genshin off my phone immediately) and I was able to consistently play on both accounts once more! It's a good thing, too, because coming up in 4.6 was a Lyney rerun...

I decided to do the Ararycan quest on this account because there's a follow-up to it I still haven't done on my main and I wanted to replay the first as a refresher. And uh

How do I still keep forgetting this is my name. Genshin characters talking about David Bowie still throws me through a loop.

We garnered up primogems upon primogems... by the time the 4.6 update day came around, I had 94 fates at hand. But I also had 0 pity, and no 50/50 gurantee...

I knew what was coming. I knew exactly what to expect. When that shooting star turned to gold, it would be C5 Jean coming to greet me. But even so, I had plenty of savings, and 3 weeks to get even more. As long as I was a little lucky with how many fates it took for each 5 star, getting Lyney afterwards wasn't out of the realm of possibility.

At the 5th 10 pull, it turned gold. "Good," I thought. "That's early. I could get back up to soft pity before the banner ends."

And then, on 52 pity, the impossible happened...

BOWS ONLY HAS OFFICIALLY WON OUR FIRST EVER 50/50!!!!!!!

Ever since this account first came to be, nearly 2 years ago now, we've lost ever single 50/50, and to the same character no less. But finally, after L after L, right when I least expected it, we've finally taken the W. And it's all thanks to this wonderful, amazing, magical catboy. Thank you, Lyney. I love you

I... did not prefarm for him like at all but that's okay, I had over 100 fragile resin saved up. I fought that crab countless times, and in only a day:

Now that all of our characters are max ascended, we have three main goals for this account:

Continue to build our characters in other ways. This includes ascending and/or replacing weapons, leveling up talents, and of course, the artifact grind... and also I might level the characters up to 90. We'll see. Pretty sure I have the books for it tbh

Gather primogems. Because of how early we got Lyney, we've got a good head start on our savings for the next 5 star bow to release or rerun (though the only character we still need to rerun is Yelan). But it's always better to be safe than sorry. Just because the curse of Jean has been lifted doesn't mean we can't still lose 50/50s (though if we lost a 50/50 to Tighnari I'd be quite amenable to that). And finally...

Advance the main story. Cyno's Act II story quest is being added this version, so I'd like to replay Act I on this account first before playing the new one on my main. In order to do that though, I first must complete Act IV of the Sumeru Archon Quest-- and I haven't even done the Chasm Archon quest on here... Still, I think it's about time we did the Sumeru Archon quest. Actually, assuming there's another Traveler Archon Quest coming before Natlan, which there ought to be, I should play Caribert on this account too. So, that will be our goal. We play up to Caribert, and then give archon quests a rest for another while.

With those goals in mind, I think this series may be seeing more frequent updates for a while... maybe. Don't @ me if that ends up being wrong.

Akira ransomware prevention and defense 2024

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

In March of 2023, the first Akira ransomware strain was observed in the wild. Since then, the group has compromised over 100 different organizations, targeting those in the financial, manufacturing, real-estate, healthcare and medical sectors.

Akira operates on a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model and typically deploys a double-extortion scheme. This involves exfiltrating sensitive data prior to device encryption and insisting on a ransom in exchange for withholding the data from the group’s TOR leak site.  

Most recently, Akira interrupted a U.S. emergency dispatch system, causing a nine-day operational outage. During the outage, dispatchers relied on backup systems. As of the present writing, full system restoration is still a work-in-progress.

About Akira

The group is believed to have taken its name from the 1988 cult anime film of the same name, which depicts biker gangs in a dystopian Tokyo. The Akira ransomware gang is known for use of a retro aesthetic on victims’ sites, reminiscent of the 1980’s green screen consoles.

Cyber security researchers have uncovered evidence linking the Akira group to the notorious Conti ransomware operation. In at least three separate cryptocurrency transactions, Akira criminals appear to have sent the full amount of the ransom payment to Conti-affiliated addresses.

The overlap of cryptocurrency wallets indicates that the individual controlling the address or wallet has either splintered off from the original group, or is working with two different groups simultaneously.

How Akira operates

Akira commonly breaches systems by obtaining unauthorized access to the target organization’s VPNs, as through a compromised username/password combination.

After sneaking in through an endpoint, Akira typically uses any of several methods to acquire permissions that enable lateral network movement.

These methods include orchestrating a mini-dump of the LSASS (Local Security Authority Subsystem Service) process memory, obtaining credentials stored in the Active Directory database and exploiting known vulnerabilities in backup software.

Advanced persistence mechanisms

Akira ordinarily deploys tools and techniques like Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Server Message Block (SMB), impacket module wmiexec, and a service manager tool known as nssm.exe, in order to gain persistence within systems.

As is the case among many cyber criminal groups, Akira also attempts to uninstall or disable security defenses, including anti-malware and network monitoring tools.

Beyond that, the group tends to use the runas command (a Windows command-line tool that allows for the execution of scripts, apps…etc., with different user permissions from the currently logged-in user) in order to execute commands.

This, in turn, makes tracking hacker activities more difficult for defenders.

Akira and C2 mechanisms

Most ransomware attackers weaponize a command and control (C2) mechanism to execute activities. The C2 system establishes communication with and exerts control over a compromised machine or network.

The C2 server can potentially be used to manage the ransomware deployment and to initiate the encryption of data on targeted systems. For the purpose of establishing persistent remote access to multiple systems within the network, Akira seems to prefer AnyDesk.

Akira and data exfiltration

Akira uses a number of different tools when it comes to data exfiltration. These include WinRAR, WinSCP, rclone, and MEGA.

After data exfiltration, Akira demands a ransom from victims. In the event that the ransom goes unpaid, the group will leak stolen data on its TOR site, as previously mentioned.

Akira’s encryption tactic

To encrypt a given target’s data, Akira relies on a combination of AES and RSA algorithms. The group will also purge Windows Shadow Volume Copies from devices by running a PowerShell command. For victims, this massively complicates the process of independently restoring systems and recovering encrypted data.

Recommended means of preventing and defending against Akira’s ransomware

1. Address identity and access management.

Enhance access controls. Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA). Akira can gain initial access via unauthorized logins to VPNs through accounts that lack MFA. This seemingly simplistic safeguard can significantly limit the risk of unauthorized access.

2. Store credentials securely.

As noted earlier, Akira deploys a variety of tactics to obtain credentials. These tactics include execution of a mini-dump of the LSASS process memory, retrieving credentials stored in the Active Directory database and leveraging vulnerabilities in backup services.

To that effect, organizations need to take care when it comes to credential management. Credentials should be stored securely, and regularly updated. Backup services must also be appropriately secured.

3. Elevate your patch management protocol.

Akira commonly exploits vulnerabilities in VPN software. Thus, regular patching and updating of software can proactively prevent Akira attacks.

4. Monitor your network like a ninja.

Akira relies on built-in commands and tools to identify an environment’s systems and to learn about the status of target devices. Detect duplicitous behavior by monitoring for unusual network activity.

Your organization should also monitor for data exfiltration. Look for substantial data transfers and unusual network patterns.

5. Secure C2 channels.

Akira uses widely recognized dual-use agents, such as AnyDesk, to establish persistent remote access. Remain vigilant in regards to abnormal remote access activities and fortify Command and Control (C2) channels. This can be of tremendous assistance when it comes to thwarting potential attacks.

6. Secure remote desktop protocol.

Akira frequently employes Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), using legitimate local administrator user accounts to facilitate lateral movement. Enhancing the security of RDP and staying vigilant for atypical RDP activity can be effective in preventing lateral movement.

7. Implement endpoint protection.

Akira usually attempts to uninstall endpoint protections as a means of evading detection. Deploying robust endpoint protection measures and consistently monitoring for efforts to disable or uninstall such safeguards can also assist with attack prevention and detection.
