That post from a few weeks ago about how different American lines look from European made me wonder if you have a favorite line? I also noticed that euro lines tend to have a more snipey(?)look and be a bit smaller, is that correct for the breed? I’m in Europe so I would be getting a euro line but I’m not really a fan of how snipey some shelties look, and tbh would prefer to be a bit on the bigger end of the size spectrum. Finally, what are your favorite examples of the breed(besides your own)/ ideal sheltie look in terms of confo? Thank you :)

Well, US and UK shelties are bred to different standards. The British type asks for a much finer dog overall, while the American looks for quite literally a (modern) collie in miniature. A strong AKC head would be considered faulty in KC and vice versa.

Here's where I answered slightly more in-depth about the standard differences. Here is also a nifty powerpoint on the faults and virtues of the FCI/UK head. Here is also a short one on coat/grooming because it popped up.

You'll hear US line shelties going a little larger on average (the type they're going for is easier to achieve in a larger format) vs British type shelties, but in reality, sheltie sizes are persistently utterly chaotic and you have to look at the growth rate of each individual puppy to have an idea. Sparty has a litter sibling the size of a small house, and that is not uncommon.

I'm partial to a good, moderate, substantial British-type sheltie, but I can also appreciate similarly moderate Americans. If you prefer the AKC type, you'll have no particular problem finding at least a high-percentage line cross in Europe.

There are some pictures of shelties I like here, here, and here - and don't worry - neither of those posts has any of my dogs in them, because I have eyes that I can see with :) I think this dog (huisin's journey to glory) might be missing from those posts though - and he's a 50/50 UK/US dog.

i am a strong believer in not being rude to young kids on the internet, especially in like kid-friendly media spaces, but sometimes i cant help but wish young kids would stay off of the internet and out of fandom spaces.. like sure, ten year olds are allowed to like saiki k but theyre also the ones that ruin all the comment sections on tiktok or youtube lol..

any time someone mentions a ship, there r hundreds of those "WHAT!! 💔💔 no... saiki x coffee jelly is better!! 😿 if you need to ship, ship saiki x the normal guy! but i ship them in a platonic ship because its better!" "poor saiki.." "saiki doesnt have a crush on satou he just thinks hes interesting, stop shipping them!! 😾" "saiki HATES TERUHASHI !!! HES IN LOVE WITH THE GYARU GIRL!!" comments, and on ANY saiki k video in general there are like "saiki would never be nice to them like that! he hated them!" "this is the most canon saiki k video ever, its so accurate how you made saiki hate all his friends and tell them to shut the fuck up every time they talked!"

i think the youtube comments are all kids (9-13 probably) and the tiktok ones are more teenagers (14-17 i would say).. its annoying either way lol..

Sowing seeds of discontent and disharmony by hanging up on my parents birthday phone call the second my mom asked if I gained weight. Hope that sits badly on their minds while they think about how that's the first call I've engaged with them in 2 months and it was for the dogs birthday. Dad scrambling to text me for my mom that she didn't mean it. Like fuck I told her I've been having a rough month and day. She couldn't keep it to herself that badly. Fucks sake

#was already not in a great place mentally but i entertained the call and was actually feeling okay talking to them giving them an update #she just hits me with that. and I'm not normally sensitive about my weight even when my mom harped on me for gaining some a few years back #i genuinely normally don't care bc I'm happy with myself. but i know ive lost weight because I've been on icu and we don't have time to eat #im so fucking mad and im even more mad I'm crying about it #bc what the fuck #i was actually feeling like momentarily safe talking to them and being vulnerable about working on my next life stages #and she just ruined the call. i wanted to talk to my mom and dad more. i do miss talking to them about some things.#i was happy to get to see my family all together even if it was for the dogs birthday. and people were smiling and shit #and ik theyre gonna say i ruined it by being sensitive but jfc #it was literally the 2nd thing my mom said to me on the call after we sang happy birthday #why couldn't she just shut up. why couldn't she have said anything else. why did i let it bother me so much i hung up #I'm just fucking tired and sad and now feeling even lonlier than ever #i just wanted a nice moment with my family god fucking damn is that too hard to ask for #and im even more angry and sad now that i cant call them back bc my mom will get on me about smth else we were previously talking about #that phone call was supposed to be a neutral zone just for the birthday song. and i was going to ride it out but fucking hell #why didnt i just put up with it so i could have talked to my family #and no calling them back isnt an option. they haven't apologized and it would be an un neutral call #which gives them space to harass me about work and shit

Ani Reviews: A Step-by-Step Guide to a Florida Native Yard

I promised you guys a review and here it is. I've never really done a book review before but I'm doing my best to make this Coherent and Helpful.

Out of all the books I checked out from the library this round, I started with this one because it was the shortest out of all of them--if we don't count the appendix and index, its 101 pages long. You can read where I sort of live blogged a portion of this read here.

I think its a pretty good read! It's definitely a lot more relevant if you are the home owner and most directly in charge of landscaping decisions and such. It gives a bit of advice on how to handle making similar changes in an HOA neighborhood, and provides pointers and resources to other books that can also be helpful in the journey to make your landscape a wildlife-friendly habitat. It focuses on Florida specifically, as denoted by the title, and will frequently remind the reader that gardening in Florida is vastly different from gardening anywhere else. So whether you've been a Florida resident all your life, or are planning on making a move on down here, this book can be a helpful resource if you want to transform some or even all of your yard into a habitat.

After the introduction, the book is separated into seven major sections referred to as Steps. There's Assess Your Property, Plan for Drainage and Stormwater Sequestration, Install Trees, Plant Shrubs, Working with Herbaceous Plants, Build a Wild or Natural Area, and Create Spaces for Human Use. If you're more interested in one part than the others, you can definitely skip around to find what you're looking for. I will say, the Drainage and Stormwater section made my head spin a bit.

I will say this: I don't know if the writers ever fully decided if they wanted this book to be targeted towards those who are already gung-ho about native plants and itching to transform their landscape, or to people who are just beginning to dip their toe into the idea. Overall though, it was a nice and informative read, and the illustrations inside are lovely.

#ani reviews #ani rambles #out of queue #honestly like this book was a nice source of inspo that would inspire a transformed yard FOR ME #however if someone isn't already interested in native gardening I don't think its gonna push them into it #if all the talk about complicated drainage systems doesn't scare them off then honestly like #the alternative solutions they offer for lawns aren't... detailed on much #i would really love to find a book that focused on alternative lawn groundcovers for Florida specifically that targeted the concerns #i find that most people have #like 'can this hold up to kids playing soccer? to dog activities? if I roll my trashcan over it to get it to the curb is it gonna die on me #because like this book recommends dune sunflower as an altenrative to turf grass but even in the appendix section it doesn't mention if it #can handle being stepped on at all #it does say frogfruit is a good turf grass substitute but also like #frogfruit sunshine mimosa and twinflower are the other 3 it suggests forth and theyre ALL butterfly hostplants #and while the possibility of there being bugs in a turf lawn is far from an impossibility idk the idea of stepping on caterpillars icks me #*out. like even if ur not barefoot #and i know my mom and one of my other friends' first concerns would be 'would snakes hide in it' and idk if thats like #a Fringe Concern that most people don't worry about but I've never seen anyone address it when talking about alternative lawns #i am getting off topic #im ending the tags here byebye

#rat rambles #oni posting #oc posting #theyre very well known and liked amongst all the colonies as y'know. they helped found all of them.#and theyve always been very friendly and kind and they have always taken their responsibilities incredibly seriously #and when they get time to be on a planet they relish it as they have a great deal of appreciation for the beauty of these worlds #but one thing that has always been a thing for them is that they've never rly had like. friends amongst these colonies #partially because of them having to travel constantly but even when they get time to hang out more theyve sort of unconsciously trained #themself to be a bit emotionaly detached from those around them #it also doesnt help that theyre a digger and usually one of like 2 or 3 on any given planetoid #which earlier on meant thar they rarely encountered other dupes and late on left then with little to do as most of the ongoing work was #already being managed by others specifically trained for the role #so the isolation started to get to them and they started to get rly antsy and didn't know why or how to fix it #when the printing pod went offline they were one of the ones more calm abt the matter due to them being generally more used to the unknown #and this combined with their general good reputation lead to a lot of dupes looking to them for direction and answers alongside burt #this actually made quinn feel rly good for a while since it was their excuse to actually talk to ppl regularly and in more personal ways #theyd hear out ppls anxieties and ideas and newest passions and goals and theyd actually feel like theyre hearing the words said #they liked the feeling of everyone wanting to be around them and seeking them out even on other planetoids #they'd get phone calls and people taking breaks from their work to come say hi and it made them feel real #but as time went on and their fellow dupes became more and more self reliant they began to seek them out less and less #because why bother someone so important and busy when you dont need to right?#and this lead to quinn going wait no why did you all leave me again :(#it felt like before but worse because now they actually had started considering a lot of these guys friends #and they still had no idea how to reach out themself without a work reason and as such they sorta started dissolving again #and its during this time when they start missing the pod and start to get more upset that shes gone #they end up returning to the original partially to be closer to her and partially because it feels the most like home to them #there they start to slowly learn to reach out themself as they sort of sit in a corner watching burt work while shaking like a small dog #this at first is very unwanted by burt who is stressed as hell but they end up forcing him to stick to an actual shift instead of just #working until he passes out and this allows them to hang out while they force him to have downtime with them to keep him from exploding #it becomes a nice comfort time for them both as they rly havent hung out much since the first like 100 cycles or so

Listen. Probably my favorite thing about The Terror is that because the story is one planned out season, the arcs and parallel scenes are set up so cleanly and nicely that it echos.

Okay finally rested enough to talk ab the craft show!

So for YEARS this one has been heaaavily coveted by many crafters and has been hard to get in, but always told that it's worth it. That you'll make your table cost back in like two hours!

Yeah no... had mom not made wreaths, we would have lost money... Anyway super super dead at times like absolutely no one walking around, just the vendors getting up and shopping bc they could. Then it would pick up but you would get maybe 2 interested shoppers out of every 10. 4 if you were lucky.

People adored the boo boo bunnies and cat toys and I sold the most of them. So now I have to make more cat toys 😭. It's not the amount of effort it takes to make them, I love making them. I hate stuffing them with catnip 😭😭😭 but that's why people (and cats) love them. Also need to put bells on them bc people really like the ones with bells, which I stopped doing bc several people kept asking if I thought their cats would eat the bells... like you can cut it off man idc sgdggdgd once you buy it it's yours idc if YOU eat it if that's your thing just give me my dollar

Have to make a card for the bunnies bc it's hit or miss on if people know what they're for (you pop em in the freezer and hold them to a small "boo boo" and use it like a little ice pack, or you can pop out the reusable cube and use ice. Either way it's a cute little ice pack.

Only my one cousin bought any handwarmers 😭 and her wife had to pay me in $4 worth of quarters sgsgdggddg I was like take your time you could pay me in pennies and that'd be fine too (had a little kid pay me 25 cents for a slap bracelet in various coins and it was so sweet 🥺)

My mom posts our shows on her fb so that family and friends can show up to support us, and the first time since we've been doing these, we had 3 groups of family come in!

But that wasn't always a good thing...

My mom's cousin brought her daughter and granddaughter, and they talked for awhile and eventually mom's cousin bought a wreath (thank god). And she was like "oh my god this is so beautiful!! 😍" and complimented my stuff as well (but my stuff is more geared towards kids/parents like the boo boo bunnies, so she didnt buy anything from me agdgdgdg)

Then my cousin (not the handwarmers one) came and I used to really love her/she was my favorite cousin... until she moved back to the state and I realized goddamn you're super annoying and have 0 social awareness (in a THE ATTENTION SHOULD BE ON ME! and a never really thinking ab the situations she puts people in when she does shit, way. Not a "I am incapable of grasping social norms/social rituals"/"I cannot control how loud I'm being/why what I say might be considered rude" way.

Anyway she fosters dogs and has 4? Of her own, anyway she always has at least one dog with her at any time. Doesn't matter if you were attacked by one when you were a small child, or that you only have cats, it's a small dog! You're gonna like this one!!

She takes them into the grocery store too 😑. Anyway she brought her foster dog to it and ofc everyone kept coming over to see it and every fucking time she would canvas this dog like "his name is Bob. He goes up for adoption in two weeks at [shelter she volunteers at]" to every goddamn person who walked by.

"But Mar, doesn't that mean she brought customers to you?"

Nope! She and her dog blocked customers from my table bc they couldnt fucking get in with the people cooing at the dog and figured eh I'll skip this one, there's 100 vendors here.

Doesn't mean that every person who skipped would've bought from me, but none of the people who came up for the dog bought anything or so much as looked twice at my shit anyway. 😑

She did tell our cousin to meet her there though bc our cousin's wife is a photographer and she was gonna take pics of the dog at a nearby park. Didn't mention AT ALL that we had a booth, so they didnt really bring a lot of money, they thought they were just gonna say hi to us real quick then go.

My cousin's wife was like YOU DIDNT TELL US THEY HAD A BOOTH HERE?!?! OMG LOOK HOW CUTE!!!!! and they bought 2 handwarmers from us 🥰. And we gave their son some stuff for free as a gift (plus bc they ended up staying for like 2 hours and that shit is only so fun for a 7 year old for so long. But it was more so just Handwarmer Cousin staying to talk to my mom for most of it while her wife, son, and Dog Cousin went shopping/canvased Bob around. But I like HW cousin still so it wasnt bad sgdggdgd I just half listened to them talk while I took care of customers. Sold 1 ornament (the whole show), some cat toys, and I think another bunny, in that time lmao)

But the whole time Dog Cousin was there I was like 😐/🙁 instead of my fake customer service smile bc that smile only lasted until the second person she canvassed Bob to and that was approximately 30 seconds.

She didnt even consider buying anything, or say anything ab our table. Only when my mom asked her if our prices were reasonable. To which we got a "yeah." Then immediately back to Bob. 😐

After they left I went to walk around and goddamn there was nothing really good there except two crochet tables which had little plushies but nothing that jumped out at me.

Did trade a tooth pillow for a small tombstone shaped bar of soap of about the same price with another vendor sggdgdgdgd which was odd but nice

Anyway here's hoping my cousin wont come to the next/last show and that we find fun stuff at that one to buy sgdgdgdg

#it was nice to see HW cousin and her family bc theyre nice people. i mean i dont really know her wife and son well bc i didnt go to the #wedding bc of AID (wanted to go though) but god every time Dog Cousin and i interact i like her less sgdgdggdgd #marquilla #really wish we sold more but im hoping having two tables will help at the next/last one bc it is CRAMPED #but thats bc i forget my inventory list and am like cramming to make ornamenta and well... no one likes them i guess :/#for the next one i just need to make cat toys and maybe more bunnies (i wanna find blue baby washcloths but im cheap shdggdgd ill check #marcs again. otherwise it's the soft long earred bunnies)#kids really love to buy the cat toys bc theyre 2 for $1 bc i use them to use up scraps and left overs and it's so cute to see them #pick through and then triumphantly hold up their choices. even better when i offer them a tiny bag and they get so happy like :0 !#didnt expect the post to be so long but whew

okay um… ik it has been a while since i said i would introduce Him but im doing it rn ok.

this is eustace! we’ve had him for about a week & a half now & hes doing very well! winni loves him, cletus thinks hes pretty alright most of the time & beau… tolerates him. adding him has gone very smoothly thanks to the two weeks he was with us in november/december.

for anyone that wasn’t following along… my friend purchased him from a pet store in june, kept him in his crate 23 hours a day, & never worked with him. because of this he would pee in the house/crate & wasy very hyperactive. the only human contact he got was them “correcting” him; he never got any love.

in november i asked to take him to do a “board & train” type thing as she had texted me saying eustace had chewed through his crate & was chewing the carpet & her bf threatened to shoot him. afterward he was better, but they didn’t continue doing (the very basic) things i did with him at my house, so he regressed. he started biting “for no reason”.

end of december she told me she was getting rid of him & asked us to take him. we eventually agreed. when i was talking to her about everything before we took him she told me she “fucking hated him” & whenever she talked about how she tried to make it work, she would always say that she had spent $3000 on him. basically only talking about how it affected her, & not anything about the feelings of the dog.

anyways. we have him now & hes getting more love than he knew was possible. there is literally nothing wrong with him except that he is a puppy. he literally just needs basic training. he is behind for his age but that is all her fault lol. his main problem is that he has no idea how to relax outside of his crate, but he is getting better. he is extremely sweet & when he stays in one place long enough he is quite the cuddle bug. you would never think he had ever bit anyone, much less hard enough to gush blood.

She got startled by some dogs in a yard. That she could see while we were approaching.

#despite being raised with other dogs and spending a lot of time with other dogs shes pretty antisocial when it comes to dogs she doesnt know #the dog behind the fence was bouncing around wanting to play and chewby just kept her head down and started walking faster #very ''maybe if i ignore it itll go away''#also idk why but she walks so much better when its just me and her lmao #shes making me look like a liar to my mom tho #like when its just us she rarely pulls on the leash. she loose leash walks next to me. i can usually get her attention back on me pretty #easily. but if my moms there she doesnt do any of that lol #doesnt matter who's holding the leash #like. whats that about bestie?#also unrelated but the city planted trees along the sidewalk last year and all but like 2 of them died within months #and now theyre. planting more of the same trees. i feel like it would be cheaper in the long run to plant some native wildflowers #or some shit #like yea more trees would be nice for the shade but like. maybe shouldnt have pulled up ALL the adult trees around there then.#like they couldve left the ones at the top of the hill #but nah they wanted to sell the wood from the black walnuts so cant do THAT #instead we're just gonna plant more baby trees that wont survive the winter #they didnt even leave the ones that survived #they went through yesterday and pulled those ones up #like #are we just gonna repeat this every year forever #cuz that seems like a waste of both time and money #and trees #and gas for the giant construction equipment they bring in to drill holes in the ground to plant the trees
