SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — “Paper or plastic” will no longer be a choice at grocery store checkout lines in California under a new law signed Sunday by Gov. Gavin Newsom that bans all plastic shopping bags.
California had already banned thin plastic shopping bags at supermarkets and other stores, but shoppers could purchase bags made with a thicker plastic that purportedly made them reusable and recyclable.
The new measure, approved by state legislators last month, bans all plastic shopping bags starting in 2026. Consumers who don't bring their own bags will now simply be asked if they want a paper bag.
State Sen. Catherine Blakespear, one of the bill's supporters, said people were not reusing or recycling any plastic bags. She pointed to a state study that found that the amount of plastic shopping bags trashed per person grew from 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) per year in 2004 to 11 pounds (5 kilograms) per year in 2021.
Blakespear, a Democrat from Encinitas, said the previous bag ban passed a decade ago didn't reduce the overall use of plastic.
“We are literally choking our planet with plastic waste,” she said in February.
The environmental nonprofit Oceana applauded Newsom for signing the bill and "safeguarding California’s coastline, marine life, and communities from single-use plastic grocery bags.”
Christy Leavitt, Oceana’s plastics campaign director, said Sunday that the new ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery store checkouts “solidifies California as a leader in tackling the global plastic pollution crisis.”
Twelve states, including California, already have some type of statewide plastic bag ban in place, according to the environmental advocacy group Environment America Research & Policy Center. Hundreds of cities across 28 states also have their own plastic bag bans in place.
The California Legislature passed its statewide ban on plastic bags in 2014. The law was later affirmed by voters in a 2016 referendum.
The California Public Interest Research Group said Sunday that the new law finally meets the intent of the original bag ban.
“Plastic bags create pollution in our environment and break into microplastics that contaminate our drinking water and threaten our health,” said the group’s director Jenn Engstrom. “Californians voted to ban plastic grocery bags in our state almost a decade ago, but the law clearly needed a redo. With the Governor’s signature, California has finally banned plastic bags in grocery checkout lanes once and for all.”
As San Francisco’s mayor in 2007, Newsom signed the nation’s first plastic bag ban.

Wicked Games ❅ 6
Masterlist
Pairing: Coriolanus Snow x socialite!fem!reader
Summary: Coriolanus preps for his next debate
Warnings: politicians being politicians, violence, trauma, blood and murder
Word Count: 4,322
Sable was back to her old self within a day, her demeanor effortlessly shifting back to the coy and demure facade that had become second nature. Her movements were fluid, her posture impeccably poised, and her smiles as teasing and enigmatic as ever. Coriolanus, though curious, refrained from probing her about the unsettling events of the previous day. He knew better than to disrupt the delicate balance of their arrangement.
Coriolanus and Sable maintained their public personas with practiced ease. Their interactions, while polished and deliberate, hinted at the tension beneath the surface. Behind closed doors, the intensity of their recent experiences lingered, but they navigated their personal and political relationship with a careful distance. Each knew the other’s secrets, yet both chose to remain in their respective roles, the arrangement holding firm despite the undercurrents of unspoken understanding.
Sable had continued her routine of attending social events and meetings with a renewed vigor. Her charm and elegance remained her greatest assets, and she wielded them with the same precision she applied to every other aspect of her life. Coriolanus, meanwhile, was increasingly aware of the delicate balance they maintained, the alliance proving both advantageous and precarious.
As Coriolanus prepared for the next high-profile debate, the atmosphere between them was a mix of professional detachment and unspoken connection. Each was acutely aware of the other’s presence, their interactions laced with the knowledge that while their partnership was strategic, the lines between their roles were becoming ever so slightly blurred.
Tigris sat in her sunlit sitting room, the soft morning light casting a gentle glow over the newspaper spread out before her. The headlines blared with the latest on Coriolanus Snow’s campaign, the coverage dominated by speculations about his budding relationship with Sable Hanover. She scanned the article, her eyes narrowing as the paper hinted at the strategic advantages and personal dynamics at play. As she read, she couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride for Coriolanus. His efforts, the calculated moves, and the growing public intrigue were all markers of his relentless ambition.
Yet, despite her pride, a gnawing unease lingered at the edge of her thoughts. The path he was carving—his relentless drive for power and the increasingly blurred lines between his public and private life—troubled her. She knew the stakes were high and the game he was playing was fraught with peril. As Coriolanus prepared for his upcoming debate, his focus and determination palpable even from afar, Tigris’s apprehension only deepened. She understood the intricacies of political maneuvering all too well, and while she admired his skill, she couldn’t shake the worry about the consequences of his relentless pursuit.
His campaign was about his policies after all, it couldn't all be about his love interest...
The thought stayed at the forefront of his mind as Coriolanus stood in front of the mirror in his private study. The room was quiet except for the soft hum of his rehearsal. He adjusted his tie, the meticulous gesture a reflection of his need for control and precision. As he paced, his mind raced through his talking points for the upcoming debate. He muttered his key arguments under his breath, the cadence of his speech rhythmic and practiced.
“Economic reform,” he rehearsed, his voice steady, “will stimulate growth in the districts and ensure a more equitable distribution of resources. The policies I propose will…”
He paused, frowning slightly, as he recalled the relentless scrutiny of his personal life. The papers had been abuzz with speculations about his relationship with Sable Hanover, overshadowing the core of his campaign. He shook his head, pushing the distraction aside. His campaign was about his policies, his vision for the future. It couldn’t all be about his love interest, no matter how much the media wanted to focus on that angle.
Coriolanus took a deep breath, his gaze firm and determined as he looked at his reflection. He needed to remain focused on the issues that mattered. His campaign’s success depended on demonstrating his capability and his commitment to genuine change. The personal drama was a distraction, a strategic maneuver that might be necessary but wasn’t the crux of his message.
“…will create job opportunities and foster innovation,” he continued, his voice gaining strength, “My administration will prioritize education and technological advancement…”
He practiced his delivery, fine-tuning his arguments with each repetition. Despite the media's focus on his personal life, Coriolanus was determined to keep the spotlight on his policies. The love interest was just a part of the narrative, but his vision for Panem was the core of his campaign. He needed to project strength and clarity, proving that he was more than just a charismatic figure in the headlines.
His rehearsal was promptly disrupted by a knocking at his door. Coriolanus grimaced as he called out, "Five minutes, Garrison!"
The door creaked open, revealing much to his surprise Sable peeking through. She smiled warmly at him through the mirror, "I think he'll take it better from you rather than me," she said.
Coriolanus turned to see Sable standing in the doorway, her appearance immediately captivating. The blue dress she wore was stunning—a collarbone neckline with long, slinky sleeves that hugged her figure in a way that was both elegant and sultry. The deep blue hue accentuated her features, making her look like a vision from a dream.
Her warm smile contrasted with the coolness in his expression, and he couldn't help but momentarily lose focus.
"I thought we were meeting at the convention center," he said, trying to mask his surprise with a touch of annoyance.
Sable stepped into the room with a playful sway, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Well, you were on my way. Plus, I thought you might appreciate a little pre-debate practice,"
Coriolanus raised an eyebrow, amused, “Practice? I didn’t realize you were into debate prep,”
“Kinda' have to be, don't I?” she replied, moving to sit in his arm chair, her voice low as she looked around, "This is a very nice study,"
"Thank you," he nodded, "Depending on what time we get out of there, maybe I'll show you around the penthouse?"
She cocked her head with genuine interest, "You mean there's more to see than just your elevator and front door? Incredible!" she awed teasingly.
He leaned against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms with a charmed grin, “Go ahead, then. Hit me with your best shot,"
Sable’s smile grew, “Alright. Your opponents are accusing you of being too focused on the elite while neglecting the needs of the districts. How do you address that?”
Coriolanus considered her question, his gaze locked onto hers, “I’d emphasize my commitment to policies that bridge the gap between the Capitol and the districts. Highlighting my proposed initiatives for district support and how they’ll positively impact everyone, not just the elite,”
Sable nodded, clearly pleased, “Not bad. How about this: Some critics argue that your personal relationships -- like ours -- could undermine your credibility. What’s your counter to that?”
He chuckled, a spark of amusement in his eyes, “I’d argue that my personal connections -- including us -- are a testament to my ability to navigate complex relationships and maintain professionalism. My focus remains on the policies and the people they affect,”
Sable’s eyes met his with a mix of challenge and admiration, “Very good. But now, what if a major scandal about one of your policies were to break just before its roll-out?”
Coriolanus’s smile widened slightly, clearly enjoying the banter, “I’d address it head-on, transparently and honestly. Ignoring it or deflecting would only make things worse. Better to confront the issue and demonstrate leadership.”
Their playful exchange had an edge to it, and the air between them thickened with tension. Despite the seemingly lighthearted nature of their practice, there was an undeniable chemistry—an unspoken understanding that their alliance was growing more complex and personal.
Sable tilted her head, studying him with a mix of curiosity and approval. “You’re good at this, Coriolanus,”
“You sound surprised,” he replied, his gaze lingering on her with an intensity that belied their playful conversation.
"I'm impressed," she decided, "And that's no easy feat,"
"I'm flattered I could accomplish such a task,"
Sable tilted her head slightly, her gaze fixed on Coriolanus with a mix of challenge and intrigue, “Alright, last question. If the debate takes a turn and you’re put on the defensive, how do you maintain control and redirect the narrative to your advantage?”
Coriolanus sauntered closer, his intensity sharpening as he looked into her eyes, “In such a situation, I’d focus on reinforcing my core messages. Redirect the conversation to my key policies and achievements, steering the discussion back to my vision for the future.”
Sable’s eyes never left his, their proximity making the moment feel charged with unspoken emotion. Her posture, relaxed yet alert, seemed to draw him in further. The air between them was thick with tension, each of them acutely aware of the other’s presence.
Coriolanus’s voice dropped to a hushed tone, “The goal is to remain composed while pivoting strategically,”
Sable’s breath hitched slightly, her heart racing and stomach fluttering under the weight of his intense gaze. He was so commanding, wrapped in an aura of power and allure. The thought of him asking anything of her—anything at all—seemed almost irresistible. Get on her knees, bend over the desk, sit in his lap...
What was she thinking?
The minutes ticked by, each second stretching the charged silence between them. Neither was willing to break the eye contact that had grown so intense. The room around them faded into the background, leaving only the two of them in this intimate, almost palpable space.
Finally, with a barely perceptible smile, Coriolanus straightened, his eyes lingering on hers before he reluctantly pulled back. “Shall we?” he asked, his voice a soft murmur.
Sable nodded, her own smile a mix of satisfaction and something more profound as she gathered herself, “Yes, let’s,”
As they moved towards the door, the lingering intensity between them remained, a silent acknowledgment of the evolving dynamics of their partnership.
The evening air buzzed with anticipation as the latest political debate unfolded before the citizens of Panem. The grand hall was packed, the audience's murmurs a steady hum of excitement and curiosity. Sable sat with Garrison and Tigris among the crowd, her gaze fixed on the stage where Coriolanus and his fellow nominees took their places.
The debate had shifted its focus, this time delving deeper into the public policies affecting all of Panem. The candidates were primed to discuss everything from economic reforms to social welfare programs, each vying to present their vision for a better future.
As the debate began, the nominees exchanged well-rehearsed speeches and sharp rebuttals. Occasionally, personal jabs cut through the more formal discussions, each dig aimed at undermining an opponent's credibility. The atmosphere was charged, a blend of political strategy and personal vendetta.
As Coriolanus stood tall at the podium, his gaze swept over the audience with practiced composure. His voice, smooth and measured, conveyed his policies with the poise that had become his trademark. However, despite his efforts to maintain a façade of calm, the rising heat in his tone revealed the strain of the evening's exchanges.
Across the stage, Eldridge Barbery, one of Coriolanus’s more outspoken opponents, leaned into his microphone with a sly grin. “Mr. Snow,” Eldridge began, his voice dripping with condescension, “you speak of economic reforms with such conviction. Yet, isn’t it true that your proposals would only serve to widen the gap between the Capitol and the districts even further?”
Coriolanus’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he maintained his poise, “Mr. Barbery,” he replied, his voice smooth but edged with a hint of irritation, “I believe you’re mischaracterizing my position. My policies are designed to address the needs of all Panem’s citizens, not just the privileged few,”
Eldridge’s smile widened, clearly relishing the chance to provoke a reaction, “Oh, really? Then perhaps you can explain why your budget proposals seem to favor the Capitol elite over those struggling in the districts?”
The barbed question was met with murmurs from the audience, and Coriolanus’s jaw tightened, “My proposals are aimed at stimulating growth and opportunity across Panem,” he said, his voice steady but with a sharp edge, “If you clean the grime off your glasses and actually read the details, you’d see that the intention is to provide long-term benefits to every sector of our country,”
Eldridge leaned forward, his tone mocking, “You know, Coriolanus, for someone who’s so concerned about equality, you seem remarkably detached from the realities faced by those outside the Capitol,” he noted, "Perhaps spending so much time with Panem's 'Floozy of the Year' has clouded your judgement?"
Sable’s eyes widened in shock at the statement, her anger flaring as her glare intensified. Next to her, Garrison muttered under his breath, his eyes still fixed on Coriolanus, “Hold it together, boy…”
The words stung, and Coriolanus’s gaze grew intense, “And you, Eldridge, seem to have mastered the art of misdirection. My policies have nothing to do with my personal relationships. It’s easy to criticize from the sidelines, but real leadership requires a commitment to practical solutions, not just empty rhetoric,”
The exchange between them grew more heated, each man striving to outmaneuver the other with sharp words and quick retorts. Sable watched from the audience, her brow furrowed as she took in the escalating tension. Coriolanus’s irritation was palpable, but so was his determination to defend his vision for Panem.
The debate raged on, each nominee striving to outshine the others with their vision for Panem. The personal attacks grew sharper, the responses more impassioned. Coriolanus, though attempting to keep his responses measured, couldn’t entirely mask the irritation that crept into his tone. Sable watched with a mixture of concern and curiosity, her thoughts racing about the implications of this heated display.
As the debate took a scheduled break, the backstage area buzzed with activity. The audience's applause filled the room, a mix of appreciation and anticipation for the upcoming results. Coriolanus, though still maintaining his confident demeanor, could feel the undercurrent of unease in the air.
Garrison, ever the pragmatist, approached Coriolanus with a furrowed brow. His usual calm was replaced by a palpable tension. “Well, that was... something,” Garrison said, his tone carrying an edge of concern, “You handled yourself well, but I’ve got to admit, that exchange with Barbery was rougher than we’d hoped.”
Coriolanus met his gaze with a measured look, the intensity of the debate still evident in his eyes, “I held my ground,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady, “We’ve made our positions clear,”
Garrison sighed, “Yes, but the polls haven’t been exactly in our favour lately. Even with Hanover, the debate could’ve gone better. Barbery’s jabs were pointed, and while you responded effectively, the optics aren’t ideal,”
Coriolanus’s jaw tightened, frustration flashing briefly across his features, “We knew this campaign wouldn’t be easy. The stakes are high, and so are the risks. We need to stay focused and address the concerns head-on,”
Garrison nodded, though his worry was far from assuaged, “I know, but we can’t ignore the fact that we’re up against some tough competition. The public is scrutinizing every move. We need to refine our approach and make sure the next debate highlights our strengths more effectively,”
Coriolanus glanced back at the stage, where the other candidates were already mingling and engaging with their supporters. The crack of the curtains let him have a slight insight into the audience, dark, massless faces all awaiting his presence again. Yet, Coriolanus couldn't help but seem to have Sable as his forethought.
"Is she alright?" he asked, quietly as though any break in his voice would increase scrutiny.
Garrison gave him a pointed, unamused glance, "Sable? She's fine, why? Because of what Barbery said?"
Coriolanus shook his head, "No... I mean --"
"She's fine. Don't let Barbery's low blows get under your skin," Garrison reminded him.
"He's not getting under my skin," he assured.
The older man cocked a brow, "You could've fooled me,"
As the break came to an end and the debate resumed, Coriolanus and Garrison exchanged a determined look. There was still work to be done, and the path to victory was anything but straightforward.
The debate resumed with a palpable tension hanging in the air, as the candidates took their positions. Coriolanus tried to focus on the upcoming discussion, pushing aside the unease that had settled in his chest. The crowd seemed to be on edge, murmurs spreading through the audience like wildfire.
Senator Duff, another seasoned politician with a reputation for sharp wit but a chronically stuffy nose, began his response to a question about economic reform. His voice was steady, but nasally, and he gestured confidently as he spoke about his vision for a more equitable distribution of resources.
Without warning, a commotion erupted from the front row. An audience member, a middle-aged man with wild eyes and a grim set to his jaw, stood up abruptly. He began to shout, his voice cutting through the ambient noise.
"Down with the Capitol!" he roared, brandishing a knife and pushing past security barriers. "Your regime's lies end here!"
Panic rippled through the crowd as the man rushed toward the stage, his intentions clear. The security team scrambled to intercept him, but he was too fast, too fueled by his radical rage.
Coriolanus, caught off guard, barely had time to react. He ducked and sidestepped as the man lunged at him, the blade glinting dangerously in the spotlight. The attacker’s voice was filled with venom as he addressed the cameras broadcasting the event.
"This is for the Hunger Games!" the man screamed, his eyes blazing with fervor. "For every child you've sacrificed to your bloodsport! The Capitol will burn!"
The cameras, initially focused on the debate, swung wildly to capture the scene. The attacker held up the knife, his eyes blazing with radical fervor. “You’re all slaves to the Capitol! Watch this, you filth!” He turned to the cameras, his voice amplified and dripping with venom, “Your regime is built on blood, and we're done with it!”
Sable, Garrison, and Tigris watched in horror as the scene unfolded before them. Sable’s heart pounded in her chest, her face pale with fear as the attacker rushed the stage. Her eyes were locked on him, his intense gaze etched into her mind. Garrison’s usually calm demeanor shattered as he stared wide-eyed at the chaos, his hands trembling.
"You two stay down!" with a muttered curse, he darted away to get the authorities, his urgency palpable as he sought to restore order. Tigris, equally stunned, remained rooted to the spot, her hand clutching Sable’s arm as they both watched in helplessness. The entire ordeal seemed to move in slow motion, the realization of how close Coriolanus was to serious harm sinking in. Sable’s thoughts raced with concern and fear for his safety, her worry for him overwhelming as she struggled to process the violence that had erupted so suddenly.
Coriolanus seized the nearest object—a sturdy microphone stand, the only thing within reach as the attacker advanced. While the other nominees cowered behind their podiums, stealing anxious glances from behind the wood, Coriolanus stood his ground. He and the assailant circled each other, their movements tense, calculated, and full of dangerous unpredictability. The room held its collective breath, every eye locked on them, waiting for the first strike. Coriolanus’s grip tightened on the stand, his focus unyielding, ready for whatever came next.
"You don't have to do this," Coriolanus told him, his tone calm, "We can work out a solution, we're all after the same things you are,"
The attacker laughed pitifully, "The same things? I don't want my country killing kids in my name. I don't want to have to scrape out a shitty existence while you all huck grapes at our heads and laugh! It's not fair!"
The attacker’s voice was filled with rage, a guttural cry that echoed through the room. His eyes darted around wildly, landing back on Coriolanus with venomous intent, “You're Capitol Scum! You don’t understand!” the man spat, lunging forward.
Coriolanus barely had time to react, bringing the microphone stand up to deflect the blow. The crowd gasped as metal clanged against the man’s outstretched arm. He staggered back, his face contorted with fury, but he didn’t retreat. Instead, he charged again, this time with more force.
Sable watched in horror from the audience, her heart racing as she and Tigris clutched to one another. The tension in the room was suffocating, the frantic energy of the crowd feeding into the chaos unfolding on stage. She could feel her pulse quickening as the struggle intensified, unable to tear her eyes away from Coriolanus as he fought to maintain control.
The attacker swung wildly, landing a slice against Coriolanus’s shoulder. He winced but stood firm, raising the microphone stand again. This time, his strike was precise. With a quick motion, he knocked the man’s hand away, causing him to stumble.
“Stand down!” Coriolanus growled, trying once more to reason with him, but the attacker was too far gone, eyes wide with anger and desperation.
“You’ll die for this!” the man screamed, rushing again with a makeshift knife in hand, slashing wildly.
The microphones had cut off by now, the cameras long since stopped, but the crowd was still witnessing every moment of the escalating violence. The attacker raised his weapon for another strike, but Coriolanus acted swiftly, sidestepping the blow and bringing the microphone stand down hard against the man’s wrist.
A sickening crack echoed through the hall as the man cried out, clutching his arm in pain. But Coriolanus didn’t stop. In the heat of the moment, he swung again, this time hitting the man squarely in the ribs, knocking the wind out of him. The assailant staggered backward, still unwilling to concede defeat, his eyes burning with a mix of desperation and hatred.
Sable couldn’t tear her eyes away, the scene before her playing out in horrifying slow motion. She saw the moment Coriolanus made his decision—the cold, calculated shift in his posture as he moved in closer, gripping the microphone stand like a club. And with one final, brutal swing, Coriolanus struck the man across the temple.
The attacker crumpled to the ground, motionless.
A deathly silence fell over the room, the air thick with the weight of what had just transpired. Sable’s breath hitched, her chest tight as she stared at Coriolanus, whose chest heaved with adrenaline. He stood over the fallen man, the microphone stand still clenched tightly in his hands, his expression unreadable.
He had just taken a life in front of hundreds of people.
The chaos that erupted in the wake of the attack swirled around Coriolanus as if he were at the eye of a storm. Peacekeepers rushed in, boots pounding against the polished floor, barking orders as they worked to restore control. The body of the attacker lay still at his feet, but Coriolanus didn’t move. His hands were still clenched around the microphone stand, his breath uneven, eyes fixed on the motionless figure below.
All around him, the hall dissolved into panic. The audience, once captivated by the debate, was now a sea of frantic bodies, pushing and shoving to get to the exits as the Peacekeepers attempted to usher everyone out. Women screamed, men barked orders at one another, and the metallic scent of fear and adrenaline hung thick in the air.
"Mr. Snow, step back," one of the Peacekeepers commanded, reaching out to guide him away from the crumpled form on the floor. He barely registered the words, his mind still reeling from what he had just done. Slowly, he loosened his grip on the microphone stand and let it clatter to the floor.
The Peacekeepers moved swiftly, surrounding the stage and pushing back the surging crowd. Tigris fought against the crowd and tried to maneuver to the stage, desperate to get closer to her cousin. Sable was close behind her, her face pale, but her composure just barely held together.
"Coriolanus!" Tigris shouted, trying to break through the wall of Peacekeepers. But they held their positions, forming a barrier between the panicked audience and the stage.
"Stay back!" one of the Peacekeepers barked, his voice firm as he blocked their path, "Everyone needs to exit the hall immediately!"
"I'm his cousin!"
"I said get back!"
Sable's heart raced, her pulse thundering in her ears as she struggled against the Peacekeeper's grip. She watched helplessly as they began to usher the crowd out of the hall, clearing the space with methodical efficiency. And she saw Coriolanus—the blood on his shirt, the cold, haunted look in his eyes—and she wanted nothing more than to reach him.
Coriolanus, still in shock, allowed himself to be led away from the scene by a pair of Peacekeepers. As they escorted him offstage, more guards moved in to clean up the mess, securing the fallen attacker and removing the evidence of the violent struggle. Blood smeared across the floor where the man had collapsed, his body quickly covered by a tarp and hauled away as though it were nothing more than debris to be swept aside.
The cameras had been cut long ago, but the witnesses—hundreds of them—had seen everything. Whispers of what had happened were already spreading through the crowd, the tension palpable as the Capitol elites were funneled toward the exits. Coriolanus felt their eyes on him, even from a distance—some filled with fear, others with awe, and some, like Sable’s, brimming with silent concern.
As the Peacekeepers led him toward the back of the hall, the gravity of his actions began to sink in. He had crossed the line again, no matter how he tried to rationalize it.

The Locked Tomb Thoughts
So something occurred to me as I was scrolling my timeline and seeing fanart for The Locked Tomb scroll up my dash; New Roh and all the non-Empire human occupied planets are REALLY FREAKIN' ADVANCED as colony worlds go. Here we have the Empire which has actually stagnated, if not flat out reverted in a LOT of its developmental levels (specifically tech, but also governance, industry, most sciences, etc.) and some parts of the Empire have shortages on things that a supposedly advanced spacefaring civilization should just...have. Why the fuck are the Nine Houses using flimsy? That shit is hard to use and expensive to make and the production is torture on any environment and NOT RENEWABLE when you just gotta plant a few bamboo shoots in a field somewhere and next year you have more fuckin' bamboo than you can ever use so you cut a bunch of it down and pulp it and make friggin paper. The only thing you have to really worry about as far as the renewable-ness of the resource is keeping the soil fed...and if the Empire has LOTS of anything, it's corpses to turn into fertilizer. (Morbid, but true)
And yet, New Roh, before becoming a literal hellscape when Varun shows up, has so much infrastructure to spare that it becomes a refuge world when the Empire sends its walking WMDs called Lyctors after BoE.
Here's The Ninth House struggling to feed its people even though it's one of the most important houses in the system and meanwhile there's this "backwater" planet called New Roh that only starts to struggle to feed people when it takes on the escaped population of a DOZEN or so other planets.
New Roh had new construction, full industry, functioning space ports, agriculture, school systems, fast food, private and public transit...the Sixth House was having problems making babies.
This, more and more, makes me question the accuracy of Jod's account of Earth's final days in NtN, because a bunch of rich twats piling onto some custom space yachts with plans to just leave behind the most productive 99% managing to escape by the skin of their teeth and magically make not one but DOZENS of colony worlds that all become self-sustaining with rich, diverse cultures, multiple languages, healthy and robust economies, weapons manufacturers, black markets, etc.?
I don't care that it's been more than 10k years. If the ships that launched really only carried with them the likes of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and the people that they decided would be good for shining their shoes, then that colony would have crashed and burned HARD before the first 10 years was up, forget the next 9,990.

Jaune Arc of Orleans -
Correspondence & Considerations
In her office high with in the confines of Beacon Tower, Ozlynn, the Headmistress of Beacon Academy sipped from her mug as she gazed out over the vast expanse of the Emerald Forest. Behind her at her desk sat Glynda Goodwitch her trusted aide, confidant and Deputy Headmistress. In Glynda's hands was a parchment letter.
"Impressive penmanship." she commented as she continued to digest the contents of the letter, "Though why these warnings were sent via traditional mail, rather than through a scroll call or text is beyond me."
"I believe that has to do more with the location of Orleans than anything else."
"Yes. Orleans. If I remember correctly it sits just at the absolute edge of the CCT. Though that is a little strange seeing as we have had video conversations with Lady Arc."
"Those are via a beam transmitter. Accessible only by government of Orleans." Ozlynn informed her deputy. "I doubt Master Arc has access to such an important resources for matters such as these."
"But if his words are true..."
"Then access should have been granted, but the only way to truly know if his warnings and proclamations are facts... requires them to happen."
"Which makes the warnings moot."
"Precisely."
"So what do you wish to do?" Glynda asked as she set the sheet of parchment paper on the Headmistress' desk, before rising from her seat and joining Ozlynn at the window. "I very much doubt Lady Arc will allow her only son to come to Vale, unescorted."
"I wish to speak with the young master, and discover how he knows what he knows."
"So you do not believe that the Brother of Light speaks to him? Gives him visions?"
"There are many strange occurrences in our world. Contradictions and questions about what is true, and real. But no, I do not believe in these warnings... though I am interested in his abilities."
"Abilities? That letter speaks of no such thing. It's just filled with religious dogma and delusions."
"This information does not come from the young master's written words."
"Really? Then from where?"
"Interviews that Qrow had conducted inside the walls of Orleans."
"Like we can seriously consider and stories he has heard. He's a drunken lout."
"At times yes, I must agree, but..." Ozlynn took another sip from her mug. "When it comes to working in the field. There are few with his abilities and skill."
"I can concede that point." Glynda offered though her tone didn't match her statement. "So what insights does... he have to offer?"
"When the young master rode out and rally Orleans defenders, everyone that had survived the fighting spoke of how Mr. Arc's very presence uplifted them renewed them. Gave them vigor, and strength of purpose."
"A semblance?"
"Perhaps." Ozlynn replied.
"Perhaps?" Glynda questioned.
"Yes, perhaps, though without his aura unlocked that seems... improbable."
"I see." Glynda commented as she too stared out over the canopy of the Emerald Forest. "So what are we to do? Are we going to make a trip to speak with him?"
"No. He's on his way to Beacon as we speak."
"How?"
"Qrow is escorting him, even if the young master is constantly complaining about being in chasity."
"Chasity? Isn't that a little... much?"
"No. It was a requirement from his family." Ozlynn answered. "They want his virtue intact... due to ongoing marriage negotiations."
"I see. So what is the plan when he arrives?"
"We will speak with him, and ascern the truth of his words."
"And where will he be lodged?"
"With you."
"ME?"
"You have the explicit trust of myself and Lady Arc to protect his chastity and well being. It was also a condition of letting him come to Beacon."
"His mother should have just used the transmitter. This is ridiculous."
"A video conversation would be... ineffective in seeing if his words are true. We can not study his posture and body language from a head only image." Ozlynn offered. "So young master Arc will reside with you, and the entirety of the staff will be informed of the... requirements and expectations Lady Arc has imposed."
"Very well. Though I still have reservations about this whole... situation."
"I would be shocked if you didn't." Ozlynn chuckled lightly. "If there is nothing else you can go about your day."
"When will he arrive?"
"With in the week."

Merry-go-round
Look at this lovely commission I got from @sortumavaara.
So, let's give Glorestor another shot, shall we?
Words: 2k
Characters: Glorfindel, Erestor, Elrond
Warnings: sexual innuendo, slight nudity...
“Am I too late? I have it right here!” Glorfindel burst through the door of Lord Elrond’s study like a ray of pure sunlight, waving a piece of paper excitedly.
“Almost,” Elrond groaned and took the cliché without looking up from his paperwork. “Thank you for your collaboration, dear Glorfindel.”
Sniggering, Glorfindel absconded again—maybe, Elrond should have known then that something was very amiss, but he was too absorbed by the compilation of letters and mementos they were planning on sending to the Blessed Realm with some of the ships that were leaving from the Grey Havens shortly.
Thinking of the friends and family that might or might not live there in peace always took a considerable toll on his mind and mood—as there was no communication from the West, he could not know what fate had befallen those he had so desperately loved.
Were they still in the care of Námo or had they returned already? Did they remember and miss him?
With a deep sigh, he pushed aside the letters he was cataloguing and pinched the bridge of his nose. As so often, he wished he had Maglor’s talent with words when it came to flowery declarations.
What was he to say to his wife and his king? How was he to explain that—if all went well—he’d see them again before long? What words would even begin to express how much he missed them?
“Did his gleaming Highness remember?” Erestor—so unlike the previous counsellor to have graced this room—snuck in noiselessly and was only noticed when he spoke up, right beside his lord.
“Erestor,” Elrond cried out in surprise—he had been so lost in thought that the sudden appearance of his old friend had considerably startled him.
Thus, the finger with which he tapped the small paper rectangle was a little unsteady.
They had decided to include a collection of depictions of the inhabitants of Imladris in their missives in case there were people around who would gaze upon them in affection and longing.
Elrond himself had sat for a beautifully detailed portrait during long, torturous hours because the mere idea that his parents and foster fathers might yearn to see his face once more made his heart bleed with unspoken longing. It had been important to him to show them that he was alive and well and—this small act of vanity he allowed himself—he had taken great pains to look as handsome as he could.
“Oh, you are the perfect son,” Erestor had mumbled when Elrond had shown him the fruit of the blessed artist’s labour. “I am sure that they’ll all coo about how utterly splendid you are.”
“All?”
“You are beloved by all,” Erestor had smiled, “the scion of so many houses and—by far—the best of them.”
His own likeness was a tiny drop of white stone into which someone had carved his noble brow and imperious expression. What might have been understood as an manifestation of his humility was in truth a testament to Erestor’s prodigious impatience and often incomprehensible aversion to being looked at for too long a time.
“There is nobody who would remember me now,” he had whispered, barely managing to dissimulate the lingering hurt this knowledge caused him. “Why waste resources and time on a cameo that will probably be discarded as soon as it arrives.”
Even now, Elrond did not know what answer would have been more unwelcome to Erestor: that he was hopeful that his parents and family were alive and would rejoice in seeing his face or that, indeed, the curse of his blood had been contained for good and that he could start a new, unburdened life in Valinor when he arrived there.
The choked cry ringing like a bell through the narrow room tore him out of his renewed spell of distracted musing though.
“Indecent!” Erestor shrieked. “Elrond, have you seen the picture Glorfindel has submitted? Have you even looked at it?”
“I admit,” Elrond confessed guiltily, “that I have not yet had the time or the inclination to do so. Why? Do you object to it?”
Elrond himself had been relieved that the work of art was of reasonable dimensions—he had dreaded a canvas spanning the entire length of the room—and had thus, naïvely as he now had to accept, trusted that Glorfindel could hardly have contained any shenanigans in so small a frame.
Sputtering, Erestor waved the submission to and fro, making it absolutely impossible for Elrond to get a good look at it.
“Stop this and let me see,” he grouched and plucked it from his counsellor’s trembling fingers.
“Oh Eru,” Elrond exclaimed as soon as his eyes focused on the picture. True enough, it was a portrait of Glorfindel, but the setting and the shocking degree of nudity knocked both the breath and rational speech flat out of the dignified Lord of Imladris.
“What will my wife think? And Gil-Galad?”
At this, Erestor sniggered under his breath. “I would think that both are fiercely aware of Glorfindel’s…grotesque ideas. Moreover, I am certain that they’d be delighted to learn that you are provided both care and amusement in this forsaken land.”
Schooling his face into the forbidding mien of an annoyed tutor, Erestor took hold of the offending image once more and shoved it into his pocket carefully. “I shall deal with this. Don’t worry. I shall compile the album and make sure to put it somewhere inconspicuous—nobody will even really notice.”
The look Elrond gave him made it very clear that he was aware of how absurd that lie was—Glorfindel’s portrait would attract undue attention, and they both knew it. It would have been so even if he had been fully clothed and sitting on a chair, holding a scroll, as was the custom—Glorfindel was just too handsome and luminous to be easily overlooked.
“I shall see to it,” Erestor mumbled stubbornly and—patting his pocket—walked out of the room.
As soon as he had entered his own chambers, Erestor propped up the illicit picture against an unlit candle.
For a while, he paced around the room aimlessly to avoid letting his eyes drift back to it—it was just like Glorfindel to put everyone else into an impossible situation by submitting something so shockingly inappropriate.
How had he even found an artist willing to fashion such an obscene work of art? How much had he paid?
Giving in at last, Erestor snatched up the small rectangle of abhorrent debauchery and, bracing himself, gazed down on it.
As was to be expected, it depicted Glorfindel. Also foreseeable was the reference to Asfaloth, his noble and trusty steed. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, in a travesty surpassing even Erestor’s rich and varied vocabulary, the esteemed horse had been replaced by a garish statue of some kind which seemed to be neighing in frivolous delight.
The core of the problem which made the usually so dignified, nay even equanimous, librarian and counsellor blush with barely contained and only vaguely defined emotion, was the way Glorfindel had chosen to present himself.
“Where does one purchase such gaudy, meretricious, ostentatious apparel?” he grumbled as he stepped closer to the window to make out every lurid detail of Glorfindel’s get-up.
As far as he could make out, his fellow lord had gotten hold of a highly suspicious set of small clothes—seemingly fashioned from exquisite fabrics that looked so soft that Erestor could almost feel them beneath his fingertips—as well as some kind of stockings that rose higher than any Erestor had ever possessed himself.
In the privacy of his own chambers, he could freely admit that he resented the fact that his eyes were inexorably and helplessly drawn to the discreet frontier between the wispy fabric and Glorfindel’s creamy, flawless skin.
Furthermore, that golden-haired savage would not have been true to his reputation and genuine nature if he had not taken care to round off his look with a pair of ridiculously impractical but undeniably alluring heels.
Setting the picture down on the windowsill, Erestor began undoing his own stern hairdo with slightly trembling fingers while staring at the cloud of spun gold rippling down Glorfindel’s back and falling seductively over one almost invitingly cocked shoulder.
Unlike Erestor, Glorfindel had always known how to look his best in every situation. Disgustingly, enviably, impossibly so!
The smug, self-satisfied smile adorning that incontrovertibly gorgeous face made Erestor scowl in frustration—he had toiled so much and tried so hard to stay unaffected by Glorfindel’s charms, but this picture undid all his previous victories over the weakness of the flesh. He simply couldn’t pry his gaze off the curve of those strong thighs or ignore the allusive way the fabric insinuated and accentuated secret assets of Glorfindel’s body to which Erestor had given too much thought already during the darkest hours of the night.
It was not even that he was that naked, Erestor frantically tried to reason with himself. Realistically, the tight corsage covered most of his torso and the absence of actual leggings was almost compensated by the sheer length of those sinfully translucent stockings—nonetheless, it was the way the garments that were incontestably worn showcased and emphasised the luscious body underneath that drove Erestor to distraction.
When the light started failing and he seriously considered lighting a taper for the sole purpose of obsessing over Glorfindel’s portrait, Erestor realised how long he had held the picture in his cold fingers without so much as moving from his spot by the window.
Undoubtedly, he had missed the first course of dinner already and, anyway, he didn’t feel inclined to go down and look that shameless creature in the eye—secretly, the sober, dignified booklover was afraid his radiant colleague could simply read his mind and somehow divine just how easily his attention had been entirely captured by the revelation of a bit of skin.
Furtively, Erestor shoved the cliché into his pocket before walking over to his bed—surely, Elrond did not expect the finished album to be ready before the morrow and thus, he could ponder the infuriating matter of Glorfindel’s trespass a little longer.
He was almost successful in his attempt to convince himself that he’d manage to nullify the terrible, seductive draw the forbidden image had on his weak flesh and tottering mind by simply overthinking everything about it until an inevitable state of weariness and disgust would set in.
Indeed, that was what he would try to achieve. Lighting the candle on his bedside table and fluffing up his pillow, Erestor slipped out of his outer garments and into his bed to bend his mind to this monumental task.
“So, how did you like my portrait?” Glorfindel positively beamed at Elrond as he sauntered over in the middle of the meal.
“It was…unusual, to say the least,” Elrond replied diplomatically—the other counsellors had not seen the picture in question, and he’d rather not go into details in a space as open as the dining hall.
“What did you do with it? You didn’t destroy it, did you?” Big, wet eyes stared down at the Lord of Imladris who promptly wondered whether he had ever used that pleading expression on his parents or guardians inadvertently—it now seemed to him that it should be considered an armed assault and be subject to punishments of varying degrees of severity.
“No,” Elrond assuaged the visible distress of his exhibitionist friend. “Erestor has taken hold of it and shall paste it in an unobtrusive spot of the album.”
Letting his eyes roam over the heads in his quest for a new victim, Glorfindel had to realise with a jolt of genuine disappointment that the librarian was nowhere in attendance. “Where is he then?”
Elrond blinked slowly. “I know not. He took your outrageous picture and has retired to his chambers—I have not seen him since. Let’s hope that he has not been taken ill.”
As he caught the feline twitch of Glorfindel’s impressive frame, he held up an imperious hand. “If you intend to disturb Erestor’s privacy at this time of night,” he said warningly, “you better take up some dinner to ingratiate yourself to his potentially ill-humoured highness.”
“Splendid thinking,” Glorfindel cried, snatching an empty plate from under Elrond’s very nose, and dashing through the room at a mind-blowing speed.
So, I've chickened out of the spicier follow-up...thus far...
Let me hear what y'all think...
Lots of love from me!

There was no prospect of getting any more oil out of the old well. It was just a depleted cavern hiding beneath the sun-baked Texas soil. But then some folks came along and squirted a special liquid into it. They went away for five days, and when they came back it was no longer an oil well. It had transformed into a hydrogen source.
Cemvita Factory, a biotech firm in Texas, had spritzed a carefully selected combination of bacteria and nutrients down the bore hole. Once inside the well, the microbes began breaking down the residual oil hydrocarbons in there—dregs that would be unprofitable to extract—to generate hydrogen and CO2. This field test in July, though small in scale, was a “huge success,” says chief business officer Charles Nelson.
Nelson would not comment on what bacteria and nutrients the company is using, but he says his firm aims to produce hydrogen for $1 per kilogram, which would be competitive against other methods of obtaining the fuel. He estimates there are more than 1,000 depleted oil wells dotted around the United States that are suitable for the same kind of microbial treatment: “A lot of these reservoirs are abandoned, they’re in the custody of the state, they’re orphaned and waiting to be cleaned up.”
Hydrogen, which releases zero carbon emissions when burned, has long been touted as a future fuel. Even though it’s the most abundant element in the universe, with copious amounts on the Earth’s surface in molecules such as water, some effort is required to obtain large quantities of pure hydrogen. There’s a long list of techniques currently vying for supremacy. People have taken to color-coding them, and there is now a veritable rainbow to choose from.
There’s green hydrogen, where renewable energy is used to split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. Blue hydrogen, meanwhile, involves extracting hydrogen from natural gas. Cemvita Factory describes its product as “gold hydrogen”—“to pay homage to the past era of oil as the black gold and it now being used as a feedstock to make subsurface hydrogen,” says cofounder and CEO Moji Karimi.
Nelson explains that the firm’s goal is to treat oil wells with bacteria to enable steady, long-term hydrogen production—perhaps lasting for decades. Existing, disused infrastructure above and around the well for taking off gasses could be brought back into service in order to collect the hydrogen, he adds.
It will be important to prevent the CO2 byproduct from leaking into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change, however. Cemvita Factory argues that it can keep the CO2 locked underground, use other microbes to fix it somehow, or find commercial uses for the greenhouse gas. There could be barriers to simply storing it below ground, though. A major blue hydrogen project in Louisiana is currently on hold due to local opposition over a plan to store any CO2 generated beneath a lake, as some residents fear it could pollute local water resources. Exactly what solution Cemvita would use in each location—and how successfully—isn’t yet known.
Capturing or otherwise neutralizing the CO2 must be done safely, says Stephen Wallace, who runs a microbiology lab at the University of Edinburgh. But he adds that Cemvita Factory’s idea of harnessing microbes for hydrogen production is “indicative of a lot of the really interesting work going on in biotechnology right now.” Wallace and his colleagues are themselves experimenting with bioreactors and have had some success in getting microbes to yield hydrogen from things like moldy bread or the lignin in paper industry waste.
But while some microbes help produce hydrogen, others are the scourge of these projects, as they can eat up stored hydrogen or consume the gas in natural wells, says Jon Gluyas, a geologist at Durham University. “We’re trying to keep bacteria away from our hydrogen because they love feasting on it,” he explains.
And he has another quibble. He argues that “gold hydrogen” is different from what Cemvita Factory is proposing. To Gluyas, that term refers specifically to hydrogen that has been produced naturally underground. He should know. “I named it,” he says. That Cemvita has given the same name to its hydrogen—which, the company makes clear, is “produced biologically, by microbes, and through a human-driven process”—is just a “coincidence,” Karimi claims.
For more than a century, geologists have been pondering how much of the natural hydrogen to which Gluyas refers could be freely available in the ground beneath our feet. The German scientist Ernst Erdmann described in 1910 how he had detected an outflow of hydrogen at a salt mine and tracked it for four and a half years. But the possibility of widespread subterranean sources was still poorly understood, even into the 1980s, says Barbara Sherwood Lollar, a geologist at the University of Toronto.
She recalls surveying sites for gasses back then and realizing that significant volumes of hydrogen were present in the ground. “Good lord, it was hydrogen, these rocks were full of hydrogen,” she remembers. Yes, the Earth hath bubbles. Since then, she and colleagues have mapped the locations of potential hydrogen sources—based on geology and known deposits—around the world.
Different processes can give rise to natural hydrogen wells. One example is radiolysis, in which subatomic particles naturally emitted by radioactive rocks such as granite cause certain molecules to break apart, releasing hydrogen. In general, hydrogen is associated with crystalline rocks, rather than sedimentary ones.
But as Gluyas mentions, microbes often gobble up hydrogen formed in the ground before anyone has had the chance to siphon it off. So the tricky part is finding a subterranean hydrogen source that is both large and intact. “No one, I think, can pronounce on whether or not these accumulations of hydrogen within the crystalline rocks … will be viable at scale,” says Sherwood Lollar.
Some firms are already targeting hydrogen deposits, though—such as the company Gold Hydrogen in Australia. It estimates that there could be a total of 1.3 billion kilograms of hydrogen at depths of around 500 meters in the Ramsay Peninsula and Kangaroo Island in South Australia. There is also a large and well-known source of hydrogen in Mali. Both this and the Australian deposits are associated with “fairy circles”—where bare patches in the middle of vegetation indicate that hydrogen is coming out of the ground. Commercial extraction of hydrogen from any such locations, at scale, has yet to happen.
Whether you call Cemvita Factory’s approach “gold hydrogen” or not, one advantage of it is that access to oil wells is reasonably straightforward—and they are often in well-serviced locations with nearby infrastructure for transporting gasses. Cemvita Factory is not the only firm to have considered this point. A completely different method of getting hydrogen out of old oil wells involves injecting oxygen into them to stimulate a flow of oil and chemical reactions that result in the production of hydrogen and other gasses. Canadian firm Proton Technologies has demonstrated this technique—which it refers to as “clear hydrogen.”
Hydrogen production linked to depleted oil wells is interesting, but such projects are still at a relatively early stage, argues Richard Lowes, senior associate at the Regulatory Assistance Project, a clean energy NGO. “I’m initially skeptical, particularly when you can produce hydrogen quite easily with electricity—it’s just easier,” he says. And he questions whether such technologies could potentially shore up fossil fuel firms and fossil-fuel-related industries, in contrast to hydrogen production systems that rely on renewables. If new oil wells can eventually be transformed into green energy sources, they may appear more palatable.
All of these ideas for obtaining hydrogen are currently jostling for attention—and investment. That, and the abundance of this crucial element in so many different places explains the rich color palette of hydrogens now emerging. From green to blue, gold, clear, and beyond, no one yet knows what will triumph. As Gluyas says: “We’ll probably have more colors than Crown Paints by the end of this process.”

Sustainable Travel Technologies: Innovations for a Greener Tourism Industry
It is this rise of travelers that want to see the world but without affecting it that tourism globally has fastened responses to the environmental challenges by evolving green practices. Here, sustainable travel technologies are found leading from the front with enabling choice eco-conscious as well as reducing carbon footprint associated with tourism. The paper explores the latest travel technology trends that lead the trend of greener travel experiences.
Electric and Hybrid Transportation
And of course, of most apparent changes within sustainable tourism is experiencing electric and hybrid transportation options. Electric cars, buses, and even boats have been commonly applied nowadays since they consume less carbon dioxide compared to the usual fuel-powered vehicles. Cities are also investing in electric public transport options so more tourists can travel sustainably within urban areas. Hybrid and electric aircraft projects are also underway by airlines, enabling reduction in emissions though full electric flight remains in its experimental stages. Electric and hybrid transport reduce dependence on fossil fuel, making it a revolution in sustainable travel.
Renewable Energy Integration in Accommodations
Energy-efficient accommodations are required in order to encourage sustainable tourism. Increasingly, hotels and resorts install renewable energy sources to their buildings in the form of solar and wind. Many other eco-friendly designs and introduce these energy efficiency modes in the accommodations by using natural light, recycled materials, and green roofs. It will make hotel guests stay comfortable and also reduce their environmental impact as these can produce cleaner energy in the hospitality industry.
Digital Carbon Platform
With carbon offsetting-enabled digital platforms, the traveling public can now balance out the environmental footprint of their trip. These will generally allow users to calculate the emissions generated in travel and invest the computed amount into projects within areas trying to curtail global emissions through reforestation or renewable energy projects. The tourism industry increasingly integrates carbon offset tools directly onto booking platforms so that travelers can easily access responsible options for more convenient and streamlined sustainable travel choices.
Advanced Water Management Systems
One of the major issues relating to the tourism industry is water saving, especially in regions where this precious resource is a mere scarcity. High-technology water management systems were developed to come up with a practical solution to water use in hotels and resorts. Among the numerous technologies applied to save water from going to waste and ensuring that its usage is on the right track are low-flow fixtures and smart showers. Furthermore, the keen monitoring systems will immediately detect leaks or overuse and call for proper measures to save water.
Implementation of those innovations, the tourism sector adds to responsible use of this valuable source.
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Traveling
The virtual reality and augmented reality have become new channels for travelers to reach destinations without having a high carbon footprint. These technologies offer virtual tours and experiences that allow viewers to "visit" landmarks, museums, and natural sites from anywhere in the world. This is especially useful for destinations with overtourism challenges, allowing people to experience these places without contributing to overcrowding and environmental strain. Finally, these two technologies can further instruct tourists regarding the biospheres and cultural heritage of the region so that they could respect and care for the areas they actually do visit.
AI-Powered Personalized Travel Planning
Artificial intelligence is changing how a traveler books his or her trip, nudging consumers into making more sustainable choices through personalized recommendations. AI can analyze preferences and habits in picking the most suitable eco-friendly accommodations, low-impact activities, and green transportation systems for individual needs. It enhances an experience for travelers while gently nudging them towards more mindful travel habits. Personalization through AI supports sustainable tourism by guiding travelers to make more mindful choices.
Biometric Security for Paperless Travel End
Biometric security such as face recognition and fingerprint scanning is becoming increasingly common in airports and other travel facilities because this makes the identification process for passengers much easier. This paperless system also gets rid of more physical boarding passes and identification cards, hence reducing on waste. Besides minimizing the amount of waste that the travel process generates, smooth and efficient travel processes reduce energy consumed due to long queues at airports and check-ins, hence lowering the environmental cost.
Blockchain for Clear Eco-Certification
Blockchain technology is placing transparency and trust in tourism's eco-certification because the fact that blockchain records and verifies sustainability practice on an immutable ledger, therefore, offers a tool through which travelers can identify genuinely green businesses. This would prevent greenwashing whereby firms offer wrong information about their sustainability practices, and travelers will, therefore, support genuinely committed firms towards sustainable practice. With more informed choices, travelers can shape up the industry towards betterment, driving demand for authentic sustainable practices.
Conclusion: Sustainable travel technologies are picking up pace, now that the tourism industry as a whole is looking towards more environmentally friendly self-accountability. Electric transportation, renewable energy, smart water solutions, and digital platforms make tourism an all-important industry in the fight against climate change, travel technology trends of this era empower travelers to experience the world in a much greener way, promising global tourism a brighter future.

Cardboard Egg Cartons by Poultry Cartons: Eco-Friendly and Reliable
Introduction In today’s world, the shift towards sustainability has become more than just a trend; it’s a necessity. One area where this change is evident is in the packaging industry, particularly in the way eggs are packaged and transported. Enter cardboard egg cartons, a solution that marries eco-friendliness with reliability. Whether you’re a farmer, retailer, or conscious consumer, understanding the value of cardboard egg cartons is essential.
Understanding Cardboard Egg Cartons So, what exactly are cardboard egg cartons? At their core, these cartons are made from molded pulp, a material derived from recycled paper and cardboard. The use of recycled materials not only reduces waste but also creates a sturdy and protective environment for eggs, ensuring they reach consumers in perfect condition.
Materials Used in Cardboard Egg Cartons Cardboard egg cartons are typically made from a blend of recycled paper, cardboard, and sometimes even water. This combination results in a material that is both lightweight and robust. The process of molding the pulp into the shape of an egg carton is where the magic happens, creating compartments that cradle each egg and prevent breakage during transport.
Advantages of Cardboard Over Other Materials Why choose cardboard over plastic or foam? The answer lies in the environmental impact. Plastic and foam, though effective in protection, are notorious for their environmental footprint. Cardboard, on the other hand, is biodegradable, recyclable, and often made from already recycled materials. This means that when you choose cardboard, you’re choosing a product that’s kinder to our planet.
Eco-Friendliness of Cardboard Egg Cartons The eco-friendly nature of cardboard egg cartons cannot be overstated. Unlike plastic, which can take hundreds of years to decompose, cardboard breaks down naturally and can be easily recycled. This cycle of use, recycle, and reuse helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, contributing to a cleaner environment.
Environmental Impact of Plastic vs. Cardboard When comparing plastic to cardboard, the differences in environmental impact are stark. Plastic egg cartons, while durable, are made from non-renewable resources and contribute significantly to pollution. Cardboard, however, is made from renewable resources and, when disposed of, decomposes naturally without leaving harmful residues behind.
Biodegradability and Recycling of Cardboard Cartons One of the standout features of cardboard egg cartons is their biodegradability. When a cardboard carton is no longer useful, it can be composted, where it will break down into organic matter, enriching the soil. Additionally, these cartons can be recycled multiple times, further extending their lifecycle and reducing the need for new raw materials.
Contribution to Sustainable Farming By choosing cardboard egg cartons, you’re not just making an eco-friendly choice—you’re supporting sustainable farming practices. These cartons are often favored by organic and local farmers who are committed to reducing their environmental impact. Using cardboard cartons aligns with the principles of sustainability, making them a natural choice for those who prioritize eco-friendly farming.
Reliability of Cardboard Egg Cartons Eco-friendliness is important, but what about reliability? Cardboard egg cartons are designed to protect. Their structure is specifically molded to hold eggs securely, reducing the risk of cracks or breaks during transport. This reliability is crucial for farmers and retailers who need to ensure that their products reach consumers in perfect condition.
Durability and Protection for Eggs Despite being made from recycled materials, cardboard egg cartons are incredibly durable. They offer excellent protection for eggs, cushioning them against bumps and jolts during transportation. This durability means fewer broken eggs and less waste, which is beneficial for both the environment and the bottom line of businesses.
Comparison with Foam and Plastic Cartons When compared to foam and plastic cartons, cardboard comes out on top in several areas. While foam cartons may provide similar protection, they are not biodegradable and contribute to landfill waste. Plastic cartons, although recyclable, are often not recycled properly and can take centuries to break down. Cardboard offers a balanced solution, providing protection while also being kind to the environment.
User Experience: Farmers and Consumers Both farmers and consumers appreciate the benefits of cardboard egg cartons. Farmers value their cost-effectiveness and the ease of transporting eggs safely. Consumers, on the other hand, appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the cartons and often prefer them over plastic options, knowing they’re making a more sustainable choice.
Manufacturing Process of Cardboard Egg Cartons The process of creating cardboard egg cartons is fascinating. It begins with the collection of recycled paper and cardboard, which are then pulped and molded into the shape of an egg carton. This process involves several steps, each designed to ensure the strength and reliability of the final product.
Customization Options for Branding One of the advantages of cardboard egg cartons is the ability to customize them. Businesses can print their logos, branding, and even educational information directly onto the cartons. This not only helps with brand recognition but also provides an opportunity to educate consumers about the benefits of eco-friendly packaging.
Poultry Cartons: A Trusted Name When it comes to choosing a supplier for cardboard egg cartons, Poultry Cartons stands out as a trusted name in the industry. With a strong commitment to sustainability and quality, Poultry Cartons has built a reputation for providing reliable and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
Overview of Poultry Cartons as a Company Poultry Cartons specializes in producing high-quality egg cartons that meet the needs of farmers, retailers

Innovations in Cannabis Cultivation That Can Solve Environmental Problems
People need to address ecological issues urgently. One of the major issues is non-renewable resources since the life of our species depends on them. Unfortunately, modern society pays too little attention to these problems. However, environmental protection should be of paramount importance and world leaders should use all available opportunities. One of the effective solutions is hemp cultivation. Let's have a closer look at why it is good and how it can help the environment. Why Is Hemp Good for the Ecology? Compared to any other plant, this one has interesting properties. First, it can absorb a lot of carbon dioxide. At the same time, the main advantage of hemp in solving environmental problems is its cheapness. Thus, the widespread cultivation of this plant on an industrial scale can be the most inexpensive way to solve many environmental problems humanity has created. This solution is primarily needed in industrial areas, where the concentration of carbon dioxide and harmful substances significantly worsens the environment and harms people, adversely affecting their health. Growing hemp can bring the following positive effects for the environment: - Improving air quality, as one hectare of hemp produces as much oxygen as 25 hectares of trees. - Stimulating reforestation. - Reducing the impact of global warming. - Restoring depleted soils. - Benefiting the economy. Hemp can be used in the manufacturing of clothing, textile fibers, oil, food, and other purposes. - Reducing microplastic pollution, as hemp can replace plastic products. - Protecting species that are on the verge of extinction. - Improving the quality of the textile industry products. Unlike modern clothes, hemp does not create a huge amount of toxic waste. - Making the paper industry more environmentally friendly. Where 4 hectares of trees are needed to produce paper, only one hectare of hemp is required. In addition, paper made from this plant can be recycled up to eight times, while material made from trees can be recycled only three times. - Using the plant in medicine. It can soothe and reduce pain. - Innovating the food industry. Hemp seeds have unique fatty acids and high protein content. It takes between 50 and 100 years for trees to reach their full carbon-absorbing capacity. So, if we want to save the nature of this planet, we had to act yesterday. Humanity is already too late. But hemp is a promising option. This plant grows very quickly, reaching four meters in a hundred days. Thus, there is no need to wait for decades to reap the benefits of greening the planet. It is the fastest carbon conversion solution available to humanity. How Should an Environmental Program Using Feminized Seeds Work? To begin with, such a program will bring maximum results in a global sense only if it is universal. We live within a planetary system the components of which are interconnected. At the same time, some countries in the world are already addressing ecological problems, while others pretend that they do not exist. A planetary planting program can help eliminate two-thirds of all emissions caused by anthropogenic activity. We need to plant not only cannabis seeds because we know that this plant is quite demanding of external conditions. Nevertheless, breeders are actively working to adapt it to different climates and increase the plant's beneficial properties. For example, feminized seeds from FastBuds germinate in 99 % of cases, which is a good indicator, especially if you plan to grow the plant on an industrial scale. It grows fast enough to be included in crop rotation, restores depleted soils, and has a positive impact on the yield of other cultures. What Are the Challenges of a Global Sustainable Hemp Program? Like any start-up, such a program has many challenges. Even though hemp can be grown almost anywhere in the world, as it requires little water and grows without pesticides, it still needs to be looked after. It is important to use feminized seeds for sowing to increase yields. An additional challenge to implementing an environmentally friendly program is the lack of related legislation in many countries where the plant is still illegal. Unfortunately, this is due to prejudice and a lack of information about the beneficial properties of this plant. Hemp can be the cheapest way to solve climate problems. It is an effective tool in the fight against environmental pollution. However, the implementation of this strategy is delayed due to the challenges associated with the specifics of growing the plant and people's prejudices that still manifest themselves at the legislative level in many countries. The images and videos coming out of Rafah are horrific. Now is not the time for "no words" but I have never in my life seen such destruction and genocidal intent openly displayed while our governments try to convince us that the perpetrators are defending themselves. I was an infant when the Iraq War started, so I never saw the media manipulation or the Bush administration’s tactics firsthand. Studying the Vietnam War under Johnson and Nixon is…I don’t know….it feels different. Everything feels different. It feels like people actually cared, but not for the benefit of the Vietnamese people (many anti-war advocates were, though, I should not discredit them), they cared because they didn’t want to be drafted or they wanted the soldiers home. Those are perfectly valid reasons to protest a war, yes, but Vietnam was the first time we truly saw the civilian impact broadcasted on television. People were completely and utterly horrified, much like they are now. However, the media companies who published such horrific images out of Vietnam are now spreading Israeli propaganda and lying about the civilian impact. Just the other day the Atlantic was justifying the murder of children if they were being used as human shields. It is not alright when innocent children are killed, of course, but why is the murder of "guilty" children justified? Who wields the power to determine if the child is guilty?
Of course, we know that none of the children burnt alive or beheaded in Rafah last night were guilty of any crime other than being born Palestinian in Gaza. This crime was deemed worthy of execution by the terrorist Israeli army. The United States manufactures the bombs that kill them, most European nations turn a blind eye or continue to fund this "army”, the countries that pretend to care are performative at best. Surrounding Arab nations will take in refugees, the existing camps will have to survive with even less resources because UNRWA is underfunded (and probably won’t be renewed in 2026) - and, once again, the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who were lucky enough to escape being burnt alive, flattened by bulldozers, or left to rot in the rubble of bombed shelters are displaced once again, as Gaza’s population was made up of ~80% of people who were displaced from other parts of Palestine.
Fuck Israel. Fuck the complicit Arab nations. Fuck complicit European countries and politicians. Fuck the corporations profiting off of this or supporting Israel’s terrorist army. And, most importantly, fuck the United States and the Biden administration for their continued, unrelenting support.
May the souls of the dozens of Palestinian lives lost last night rest in peace. I keep thinking, of course, about the video of the beheaded child that has been circulating around. I want to get that image out of my head because that child deserved to be remembered for much more than just their corpse. I cry every time I see the artwork of the children crushed by the rubble when Rafah was under siege a few weeks ago. They deserve to be remembered for anything else but their dead bodies.
I’m sorry that this is coming from an Animal Crossing blog of all places. I just have a lot of anger and expressing it through writing like this helps. I keep a private journal with much more explicit, uncensored thoughts, but I want to make my position absolutely clear. No amount of Palestinian violence will ever justify Israel’s response, which is ALWAYS destruction, murder, and ethnic cleansing.
If you demand sources, I have them, and I’m not a pussy. I’ll send you my published papers and articles.

Family (Mer AU)
“Kazuo?”
Kazuo looked up with a hum, sorting through a few papers for his class. “Ah, Akiko!”
He smiled at the woman, quickly jumping up to offer her his seat, which she took- though not without a halfhearted glare.
“Yes, yes, such a gentleman,” she huffed, even as she set her cane aside with no small amount of relief. “I do hope I’m not keeping you long.”
“It’s no trouble at all,” Kazuo assured her, quickly gathering the rest of his papers into the folder, then slipping it into his case before giving her his full attention again. “Can I help you with anything?”
Akiko smiled tiredly at him. “You know, I think you work the hardest here- and you’re so passionate about it, too.”
He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck a touch self-consciously. “Well, what can I say? I’ve always loved the ocean, ever since I was a kid-”
Finding out you can grow a fish tail certainly sparks an interest-“-and I’m lucky, really, that I can work in a field I enjoy so much,” he finished with a small grin. “It means a lot to me.”
Akiko just looked at him, smiling in this soft, knowing way that had him thinking- not for the first time- that she knew, and any moment she could just say something- “That’s good to hear,” was all she said, causing him to release a breath he wasn’t aware he’d been holding.
“You know my daughter, Hikaru?” she questioned, and after a moment of thought Kazuo nodded, recalling a few times she’d come up in conversation.
“She’s working on a degree in business management, right?” he checked. “I don’t think you’ve ever said what she wanted to do with it, but you’ve mentioned her.” “Yes, she was planning on starting her own business, but…” Akiko shifted in her seat, a frown twisting her lips. “She’s had- let’s call it an identity crisis, and she’s planning to change her major to marine science.”
His renewed interest must’ve shown on his face, because she chuckled before she continued. “I’m already discussing it with the dean, it shouldn’t be much of a problem to get her enrolled in new classes, but one in particular is all full, and she asked for it specifically, so I told her I’d ask the professor if he’d be willing to make an exception for her.”
Kazuo nodded, because that made sense. “Sounds like a good plan- I hope she really enjoys her new classes! Man, when I was first getting into things, I thought I’d never be done with school, but when you really get into it it’s a lot of fun!” He started rummaging through his case, leafing through a few papers. “If you want, I could probably give you guys some resources if she wants to do some extra studying-” “...I would hope she’d pick up on things like that in your class,” Akiko said slowly, watching him with a touch of amusement. “If you’ll have her, anyhow.”
“Well, yeah, I always provide extra material and resources for my students-”
Kazuo blinked as her words caught up to him, and couldn’t help but grin. “Oh, you want to put her in my class- of course! I’d love to have her join us!”
Akiko laughed at him as she retrieved her cane. “I knew I could count on you. I’m sure she’ll learn plenty from you, Kazuo.”
She moved to stand, waving off Kazuo when he offered a hand to her, and briefly looked at her watch before smiling at him once more.
“I’m afraid I’ll have to get to my own class, so we’ll discuss details another time. Thank you again, I know you’ll help her a lot.”
“Right, I look forward to it,” he smiled, though he couldn’t help but think there was something he was missing. “Have a good day, Akiko.”
She nodded her head to him, with that knowing look again, and went on her way.
…There was definitely something that he missed in that conversation.
But he didn’t have time to dwell on it, as a look at the clock revealed that he was late-
So he rushed to his classroom and did his best to put it in the back of his mind.
—
“-so her daughter’s going to be joining my class!”
Kazuo told Ryo with a smile as the other man rang up his snacks- Ryo always tried to give him whatever he wanted for free, as thanks, so he always had to watch and make sure he was actually charged for things.
Ryo still gave him a discount more often than not.
“That’s great, Kaz!”
Ryo flashed that smile, the one that made Kazuo go weak at the knees, so he pretended not to notice when he was given the employee discount.
“Y-yeah,” he chuckled, hoping his face wasn’t as red as it felt. “She’ll need to do a lot of catchup, but with how Akiko talks about her I’m sure she can handle it- and I’m always happy to help nurture a budding marine scientist!”
“That’s still the funniest job you could have,” Ryo chuckled, putting Kazuo’s purchases aside for later. “I know you say you have better control of your forms, but don’t you have to go in the water around people sometimes? What if you, ah, change suddenly?”
He shrugged, leaning against the counter and watching Ryo start to close the small store. “It hasn’t happened yet, so I guess that’s more of a ‘we’ll deal with it when it comes’ kind of issue.”
The responding laugh made Kazuo grin maybe a bit too brightly, but thankfully the other was too busy to notice. Don’t get him wrong, Ginga was a sweet kid and he was thrilled that he could help him, but sometimes he wished the teen would get home from school just a little bit later on days like this. Just so he could have a little more time with Ryo alone.
I don’t even know if he’d want another relationship, let alone if he’s interested in men, he reminded himself with a brief shake of his head. Don’t get your hopes up.
“Kaz?”
He jumped as the voice shook him from his thoughts, snapping back into focus to realize Ryo had stopped to look at him, at his face-
“Do you have gills?”
…Or at his neck, apparently.
Kazuo chuckled faintly, trying to calm his rapidly beating heart. “Yeah, yeah I have gills,” he answered with a bit of relief. “They’re pretty hidden, since I’m only half- Ginga has them too y’know.”
“Well, yeah, I know, but-” Ryo rubbed the back of his neck, looking a bit sheepish. “I’ve never looked all that closely when he’d changed, since usually he’s underwater-”
…Was he going to regret this later? Most likely.
Was he still fully willing to throw caution to the wind in this exact moment? Absolutely.“They’re there even when the tail isn’t, actually.”
Kazuo told him, grinning a little as the other man’s face lit up with interest. “The tail relies on the latent mer magic, or whatever you wanna call it- but most of the other mer traits stay.” He stepped forward, holding out his hand and not thinking too hard about it.
Ryo was red in the face when he slowly placed his hand in Kazuo’s, which the mer took as a good sign. God, I can’t believe I’m about to do this…
Gently, he tugged Ryo’s hand up, trying to ignore how warm it was, and brought it up to rest against the side of his neck. “You can, uh, actually feel the gills here- so whether my tail is out or not, I can still breathe underwater.”
Ryo’s warm, calloused fingers brushed against his neck, finding the rougher patch of skin where his gills were hidden away, and as he leaned in closer Kazuo forgot how to breathe.
They were so close, Ryo practically pressed up against him, and all Kazuo could see was him.
The worn Hercules T-shirt he was wearing, the scuff on his chin, the way his bangs curled with the humidity.
That warm, slightly crooked smile, and the absolute shine in those brown eyes that he could just stare into for hours…
Ryo’s face was red too, and Kazuo swore his heart skipped a couple beats as the hand slowly moved up to cup his cheek instead.
They stayed there for several seconds, both seemingly frozen in place, eyes locked on each other.
Ryo's lips parted, the man starting to say something that Kazuo was way too hopeful for-
“Daaaad! Tell Hyoma he can’t be here today!”
The shout was like lightning, sending them flying apart, both bright shades of crimson that wouldn't easily go away.
Ryo quickly turned to address Ginga and his friend as they burst in, while Kazuo retreated to the bathroom to try and compose himself, the warmth from the other's hand still lingering on his cheek.
He was absolutely screwed.
—
Call him cliché, considering what he was, but Kazuo genuinely loved the ocean.
It was where he belonged, in part. It was where he could relax, go to be alone, where he could let his worries go and just be.
But alas, he always had to return to the surface eventually, so he was heading back up now, to the private little beach he always used.
It was cloudy, and a bit later than he normally swam, but he took little notice- nobody ever came here besides him.
…Or at least, nobody had before.
As he pulled himself up on smooth stone, grimacing at the feeling of it along his stomach, he caught sight of a number of things strewn across the beach. Things that hadn’t been there when he dove down.
Which meant someone was here.
…Someone was here.
It felt like ice filled his veins as the realization struck him, and he turned to push himself back into the water before he was seen, somebody was here why was somebody here-
Bushes rustled and Kazuo bit harshly on his lip, silently cursing how clumsy he was on land-
Just a little farther-
“AHA!”
No, no, no- He shoved himself headfirst into the water, flicking his tail up to keep it from dragging on the stone-
Pain sliced across his tail like a knife, making him cry out, but he just grit his teeth and sped off, no thought put into where he was going besides away, have to get away-
He swore he could hear laughter echoing behind him as he fled.
—
“Alright Mr. Mahinay, the doctor wants to keep you overnight to make sure your leg doesn’t get infected, but I’m sure you’ll be alright. Just make sure you get some rest, and let us know if the pain becomes unbearable, okay?” Kazuo nodded at the nurse, giving her a smile. “I will, thank you- um, did you call the number I gave you?”
“Oh, yes, a man answered, I believe his name was Ryo?” at his nod, she continued. “He seemed quite worried about you, I believe he’s on his way.”
“Alright, thank you,” he sighed, leaning back in his propped-up bed. “That’s all, just make sure he’s let in when he comes.” “Of course, sir.” She gave him a nod, and left the room, leaving it open, but only halfway, per his request. Leaving Kazuo to just sit and wait.
He didn’t want to tell Ryo he was in the hospital, necessarily, but he’d been planning to go see them after his swim, and when he didn’t show up he knew the other man would’ve started freaking out- Kazuo never took his phone swimming, so he had no way to contact them anyway.
..It’s nice to know he worries about me, he smiled to himself, trying to relax. Let’s just hope he doesn’t overdo it…
He’d been dozing for some time when the door finally squeaked again, footsteps hurrying through the room and stopping at his bedside, and before he really had a chance to react two hands were grabbing his arm.
“Mr. Mahiany! What happened, are you okay??” He jumped at the touch, but stopped himself from pulling away, a surprised chuckle leaving him as he opened his eyes. “Ginga?” “He insisted he wanted to come too,” Ryo explained, clearly worried but trying to smile as he joined the kid. “He was there when I got the call, so…”
“Are you sick?” Ginga tugged lightly on his arm. “Or hurt? Do you need anything?” Warmth lit in his chest at his concern, and he tugged his arm free so he could ruffle the young mer’s hair. “I’m fine, Ginga, I just fell and scratched up my leg a bit, they got me all fixed up.”
“See? What’d I tell you, guppy,” Ryo pat Ginga’s shoulder. “Nothing keeps Kazuo down for long, he’ll be up and at it again in no time.” Ryo watched him carefully over Ginga’s head, and Kazuo smiled at him, trying to reassure the taller man that he really was fine.
Ryo relaxed after another moment, smiling back at him, and sat in the chair next to the bed, intending to stay for a while. “Why don’t you tell him what you and Hyoma did today? Since you’ve already told me about eight times.”
Ginga lit up with a grin, already starting to talk, and Kazuo huffed out a breath, putting any hopes of ‘resting’ behind him, because he could tell this was going to be a long one.
…Still, it’s… Been a while since somebody cared for me, hasn’t it?
I’d almost forgotten the feeling.
So he settled in, offered comments and exclamations where needed- Ginga’s excitement was infectious, nearly washing away the stress of his day so far.
…I’m glad they came.
—
“-and there’s a seahorse that keeps following me around whenever I get to a certain part of the water, do you think-”
Ginga cut himself off with a yawn, and he shook his head as if trying to shake the drowsiness away, but it was clear he was trying not to drift off where he sat, head resting on his arms at the side of Kazuo’s bed. “Alllright kid, I think that’s enough,” Kazuo chuckled, stifling a yawn of his own. “Visiting time is almost over, and you look like you could use some sleep.”
Ginga pouted, but didn’t argue like he would with his dad- which Kazuo was very amused by, in all honesty- and stood up, stretching and yawning again. “Daaaad, it’s time to go-” “Mmhmph?” Ryo shifted, lifting a hand to brush his bangs out of his face and blinking at the two wearily. “Wha’ time iss’t..?” “Late!” Ginga huffed, taking him by the arm and trying to pull his dad from the chair with little success. “You fell asleep, come on-” “Oh, I- oh-”Ryo jolted awake, sitting up and eyes seeking out Kazuo with concern, but the mer could only smile. “It’s alright, Ginga kept me company, you looked like you could use the rest.” “...Heh, sorry,” Ryo looked sheepish. “I… Haven’t been sleeping well, I guess. You sure you’re okay for us to go?” “It’s just a scratch,” Kazuo waved him off and tried to shoo them out the door. “Go, we’ll all get some sleep, and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah, we need to pick what restaurant to go to-” Ginga frowned to himself, putting a hand on his chin in thought. “We normally just order chinese, but if we’re going to stay we’ll sometimes go to that place up the road…” Ryo rolled his eyes, smiling fondly, and ushered Ginga out of the room. "We'll see you tomorrow, Kaz. Just… Call me when you get home, okay? I'll arrange everything about dinner, so don't you worry about it."
Kazuo smiled, but now that Ginga was gone it felt fake even to him.
It's now or never, he should know as soon as possible-
"Um, Ryo, I need to-"
"Nope, you're not changing my mind!" His friend interrupted, clearly expecting a protest of some kind, but this was more important than that-
"It's not that," Kazuo tried again, sitting up a bit straighter. "I'm not-"
"And if you're not up to going out, you can just come over! We'll make popcorn, watch a few movies, maybe play some board games-"
"Yes, that does sound lovely, but-"
"-I'll carry you there, if I have to!" Ryo finished firmly, and that was a mental image he'd be holding onto for days, but-
"Ryo, someone attacked me in the bay."
He could see the moment his words registered, the way his eyes widened and worry washed over his face anew.
Ryo glanced out the door, then swiftly returned to Kazuo's side, searching his face while keeping his voice low.
"Someone attacked you?" He repeated in shock. "But- then why did you-"
"I-" Kazuo swallowed, gripping his blanket as the memory bubbled back up to the forefront of his mind.
"I was swimming, Ryo," he murmured, watching horror and realization dawn on his face.
"I came up on the beach, and I saw somebody's supplies- they were on their way back, I heard them, a-and I turned around but I wasn't fast enough-"
Kazuo paused, briefly brushing a hand over his injured leg and letting out a shaky breath.
"...I don't think they saw my face, but I know they saw… Purple."
Ryo plopped back down in the chair, face pale as he ran a hand through his hair.
"...Someone saw your tail," he mumbled, more a whisper than anything. "And- and they cut you, somehow…?"
Kazuo shook his head, wincing at the reminder.
"Shot me, I- I think it was some kind of harpoon gun…"
"God, Kazuo-"
And then Ryo was leaning forward to take his hands, holding them securely in his larger ones. "Are you okay? Seriously?"
What did I ever do to deserve him?
"Yeah, I'm okay now," he smiled up at him, squeezing his hands without much thought. "And I'm really looking forward to dinner, okay? No carrying necessary."
After a moment, Ryo smiled back- that warm, soft smile that Kazuo adored every time.
"...Alright. We're gonna treat you like a king, just you wait."
Despite the looming fear of being seen, the prickling anxiety wondering if he'd been recognized, alongside a million other things he had to be scared of right now…
…He knew Ryo would keep him safe.
—
A week after the fact, Kazuo could walk without much difficulty, though with a noticeable limp- he'd get the stitches out in a few more days, which should help with that.
Once she knew he was alright, Kakiko seemed amused by it, offering him her cane several times over the past few days he'd been back at work, and today she'd topped it off by giving him one of his own. Which, despite his class's teasing, was proving to be quite helpful, so he'd probably hold onto it after this.
…The colors that she chose did make him a bit nervous, but it wasn't as if his love of the color purple was a secret, so he should have nothing to worry about.
Now, he was making his way down the hall, glancing through his calendar on his phone with his free hand, admittedly not paying much attention to his surroundings.
In his defense, he knew the other teachers' schedules- his class got out a bit before the others running right now, so nobody else should be in the halls.
Which is why he was completely caught off guard when he rounded a corner and collided with somebody else, phone slipping from his hand- and before he even had a chance to catch it, his back hit the wall as whoever he ran into shoved him, knocking the cane right from his hand to clatter to the floor as well.
What the hell-?
"...Sorry," he said first, because he did run into them, but he was quickly preparing a conversation about why you didn't shove people-
"Right, of course you are," a shrill, somewhat grating voice answered him. "Next time, pay attention to where you're going instead- this is a public space, not your personal walkway."
Kazuo froze, apology and anger fizzling away as the voice registered.
Wait, that sounds like…
He felt stuck in place, completely unable to move, even his gaze locked on the ground.
No, no it can't be-
"I swear, if any of my research papers were messed up…" the voice grumbled, leaning down to gather the papers he'd dropped when they ran into each other.
Kazuo caught sight of black hair, a single colored streak-
He shut his eyes, trying to force his breathing to remain steady.
How could he be here? How could he find me here!?
The man straightened up again, and now Kazuo could feel his eyes on him, looking him over like one would look at a science experiment.
"...Oh!"
And with that one word, that one sound of recognition, his last hope of being mistaken fizzled out.
"Well, isn't this a happy surprise-"
His voice had taken on a much more friendly tone, like the man was genuinely glad to see him.
Kazuo knew better.
"Kazuo Mahinay, is that you? It feels like it's been forever!"
And I would've loved to keep it that way.
Kazuo swallowed, wanting nothing more than to run from this encounter as fast as possible, but a twinge from his leg was a painful reminder that he couldn't, that he didn't have a choice.
"...Yeah," he managed to choke out, finally pushing himself up the wall to stand up straight, and dragging his gaze up to the man he'd never wanted to see again.
"It- it's been a long time, Doji."
Daidoji Okami was exactly like he remembered.
The cold, calculating glint in those blue eyes, visible even behind his glasses. The gold streak in his hair, slicked back and pristine as always. That self-satisfied smirk that he wasn't even trying to hide as he put a hand on his hip.
"It really has- I can't say I'm surprised you ended up in a place like this, you did always have a fascination with small towns."
"A-and that makes it all the more surprising that you're here." Kazuo forced a smile, trying to ignore what was probably an insult. "I thought you hated small towns."
"Oh, believe me, I do," the instant scorn dripping from his voice was at least more familiar, though he wouldn't call it comforting.
"I'm only here to do some research for a… Personal project of mine- I won't bore you with the details." Doji waved a hand dismissively, though he kept his cold gaze on Kazuo, who was tensed to flee as soon as he had an out.
Then Doji's eyes settled on his name badge, and with a wide grin he confirmed Kazuo's biggest fear about this interaction.
"...But now that we're colleagues, I'm sure we'll find plenty of time to catch up…" his eyes narrowed, grin sharpening into something cruel.
"...Kazu-kun."
No, he has no right-
A wave of anger rose up at the unexpected and unwelcome term, and Kazuo had to bite back a very inhuman growl, narrowing his eyes at the man.
How dare he-
"We'll have to see, Dai-kun," he muttered in response, feeling a hot flash of satisfaction when that arrogant grin dropped back into a scowl.
"I'm pretty busy these days, and I wouldn't want to waste your time if you have such an important project."
His voice remained steady, and he kept eye contact- he was not going to show Doji how shaken he really was.
"...Of course," Doji smiled again, his voice that poisoned-honey tone that they both knew Kazuo wouldn't fall for any more. "Until next time, then."
With that, he walked away, but Kazuo waited, listening to his footsteps, and only when he could no longer hear them did he dare to relax, sliding back down the wall to sit on the floor and bury his face in his hands.
Why did it have to be him? Why, after all these years, did he have to come here?
He sat there for a while, trying to calm his pounding heart. He wasn't really sure for how long.
But when the silence of the hallways was filled by students talking, moving between classes or just heading home, he finally moved again- grabbing his nearly forgotten phone and the blue and purple swirled cane, he dragged himself back to his feet.
And Kazuo went home.
—
…At least, he’d meant to go home, but somewhere along the way, his muddled brain had gotten the paths mixed up, and he found himself in front of Ryo’s store, instead.
He considered walking away again, actually going home, putting on a baking show and burying himself in a pile of blankets, where he could be-
…alone.
It only took a minute for Kazuo to decide he would do just about anything to not be alone right now.
The loud cling of the door marked his entrance, preventing him from changing his mind even if he wanted to.
“Welcome in!” Ryo’s voice greeted from out of sight, and he said that to everyone, every day, but in that moment, just those two words had relief crashing over him like a wave.
I really don’t know what I’d do without him…
He made his way to the front of the store, but hung back at first, seeing a handful of people around the counter and not wanting to disturb them. He didn’t browse today, he just… Needed to see him.
And now that he could, he couldn’t keep a smile off his face.
Anyone who’d ever exchanged a word with Ryo Hagane could tell- he was a truly kind, genuine person who would never turn away someone in need. Even if they didn’t know they needed him.
…That was about as different from Doji as a person could possibly be, really.
Watching Ryo laugh, make jokes with his regular customers, grinning bright enough to rival the sun, Kazuo found himself struggling to remember why he’d hesitated at all.
I don’t want to lose him, he means the world to me…
…but I’m tired of hiding what that really means.
The people at the counter finally left, and Ryo’s attention turned to him, smile somehow getting brighter when he realized who it was. “Kazuo! I didn’t see it was you that came in- how’re you doing?”
Kazuo chuckled and walked over to join him, leaning against the counter to give his leg a break. “I’m okay, Akiko gave me a cane to help me out, and it’s definitely made things easier.”
“It’s even your colors, too,” Ryo chuckled, rummaging blindly through the drawer he kept his keys in. “I’ll be closing in a sec here, so if there’s anything you want, better grab it now- not gonna open until Monday.”
“Monday?” he echoed, and Ryo nodded, making a noise of triumph when he found the keys and heading over to lock up. “Pest control’s coming tomorrow, and it’s inventory as usual this Sunday, so I decided it’d be easier to just stay closed. And, since he’s gotten better with his forms, I let Ginga spend the weekend with Hyoma, so I’ve got no responsibilities until Monday!”
He started flitting around the store to close, a sight Kazuo was well familiar with and was quite happy to watch again.
“The whole weekend, huh?” Kazuo chuckled, “Careful, next thing you know he’ll be coming home with blue hair and a mohawk.”
“Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong, good sir!” Ryo barked out a laugh of his own. “If Ginga or Hyoma wanted to dye or cut their hair, they’d come to me, not be all sneaky about it!”
Kazuo raised an eyebrow, a bit doubtful, and Ryo tossed a grin over his shoulder. “I’m a trained hair stylist and colorist, I could open my own boutique if I wanted!” He paused, then added a bit sheepishly. “...Once I renew my license, anyway.”
He returned to his closing duties, talking about this and that, and Kazuo could do nothing but watch, just like every other time he was here.
It was like Ryo didn’t even notice how late it was, or didn’t remember that Kazuo never came over on Fridays. He was acting like this situation was completely normal.
…Does he not notice, or did he notice I was upset and wanted to distract me?
It was hard to tell, really. Either way, the normalcy was appreciated more than Ryo probably realized.
“...Kaz?”
He jumped and looked up, so entangled in his own thoughts he hadn’t noticed him walk over. “Oh, sorry- I guess I was spacing out.”
Ryo waved it off, smiling, but this time there was worry behind it, and he leaned back against the counter beside him. “So what’s up? Never seen you out this late, I thought you always went right home after your late class today.”
His tone was concerned, but light, like he’d change the subject at a moment’s notice if Kazuo asked.
…Alright, maybe he noticed every fact, and was definitely trying to act normal for him.
He’ll understand, I know he will.
Kazuo let out a grunt, head falling back so he could stare up at the tiled ceiling.
“You remember how I told you the robotics teacher had to unexpectedly quit a couple weeks ago?”
Ryo hummed confirmation, and Kazuo shut his eyes, trying to draw up the strength to acknowledge this situation, then finding he wasn’t surprised at how easy it was to share with him, at least. “Yeah, well, I met his replacement today, and uh…” he forced a chuckle, peeking an eye open to watch the other’s reaction. “...It’s my shitty ex-boyfriend.”
Immediately, Ryo’s expression shifted- his worry softer, but more clear, understanding dawning in his eyes. “...Do you wanna talk about it?” he asked quietly, leaning in a little closer. “Or- or complain about him?”
At that Kazuo laughed again, this time for real, and opened both eyes to look at him properly. This time, it was his hand that found Ryo’s, lacing their fingers together. This time, he really took notice of how Ryo’s cheeks reddened at the contact.
“Y’know, I think I did,” he started in a murmur, just watching his face. “When I came in here, I wanted to complain, and lament about my past taste in men, and half jokingly consider quitting my job so I wouldn’t have to deal with him, but…”
Well, here goes everything…
He pushed away from the counter but kept hold of Ryo’s hand, smiling warmly when the other quickly shifted his weight, ready to catch him if his leg gave out. “...But I think I’d rather just spend the time with you.” Kazuo took Ryo’s other hand and tugged him closer, nervous and hopeful and ready.“I’d rather go out to that diner you always recommend, the one that’s open late. I’d rather spend the night at your place, and spend hours watching all the horror movies we can get our hands on- like you’re always inviting me to.”
As he spoke, Ryo’s face went through concern, to confusion, to hope.
And now the taller man was smiling again, that warm, gentle smile that had Kazuo falling in a little deeper every time he saw it.
“...I’d rather have you, Ryo,” he told him, squeezing his hands in the hopes of convincing him it was true. “If- if you’ll have me, that is-”
“Yes,” Ryo was saying before he’d even finished, looking on the verge of tears before he pulled Kazuo in close, wrapping his arms around him and holding him close. “Yes, absolutely, I- I’d love that,” he laughed, and Kazuo found himself near tears himself, grinning and burying his face in Ryo’s chest.
“...Then you have me,” he mumbled into his shirt, closing his eyes. “For as long as you’ll want me, you’ll have me, Ryo.”

2. Isn’t nuclear energy really expensive? Nuclear plants have a high overhead cost, but this is meted out over the long life of nuclear plants, where they produce huge quantities of energy. In terms of renewables, the cost of constructing wind turbines and solar panels is low, but these sources tend to increase the service cost of electricity. A thorough study from researchers at MIT looked at the dynamics of real electricity markets and concluded that, under a wide range of different assumptions about the efficacy of various sources of energy, consistently the lowest-cost scenarios for deep decarbonization involve the least variable renewables (e.g. wind and solar), and the most of what they call “firm” low-carbon sources (e.g. nuclear).
this is a pretty misleading description of the study. to quote from the "Context And Scale" segment of the study which explores exactly what they're comparing:
Context & Scale Mitigating climate change while fueling economic growth requires decarbonizing the electricity sector at reasonable cost. Some strategies focus on wind and solar energy, supported by energy storage and demand flexibility. Others also harness “firm” low-carbon resources such as nuclear, reservoir hydro, geothermal, bioenergy, and fossil plants capturing CO2. This paper presents a comprehensive techno-economic evaluation of two pathways: one reliant on wind, solar, and batteries, and another also including firm low-carbon options (nuclear, bioenergy, and natural gas with carbon capture and sequestration). Across all cases, the least-cost strategy to decarbonize electricity includes one or more firm low-carbon resources. Without these resources, electricity costs rise rapidly as CO2 limits approach zero. Batteries and demand flexibility do not substitute for firm resources. Improving the capabilities and spurring adoption of firm low-carbon technologies are key research and policy goals.
so two important points here
first: "firm" low-carbon technologies aren't limited to nuclear, but also reservoir hydro, geothermal, biomass, and fossil plants with carbon-capture
second: the comparison here is between an all-solar/wind approach vs. a blended approach, with an "all nuclear" (or a broader "all firm low-carbon) approach not being used as a point of comparison at all in this particular study. so yes, technically within the context of this comparison, the option with the "most nuclear" is the cheapest option, but that doesn't actually mean that nuclear is cheaper than solar/wind, it just means that the cost of trying to make solar/wind viable in areas where it simply isn't the best option (ie, trying to use massive lithium battery packs to store energy in areas where the geography doesn't allow for pumped hydro storage) instead of just using nuclear in those areas more than cancels out the cost benefit of solar/wind over nuclear. which, yes, is true, but doesn't mean that solar/wind aren't the less expensive option in the areas where the geography *does* allow for pumped hydro storage.
also, i'm not entirely sure about this, but when they say "reservoir hydro" in the "firm low-carbon" options, are they referring to pumped hydro storage? if so, that' even more misleading. like yeah, no obviously trying to use wind/solar without pumpoed hydro storage is an absolute non-starter, and trying to store the energy in lithium batteries would be both very expensive and very ecologically devastating, but no sensible person is proposing wind/solar without pumped hydro storage. hopefully i'm misunderstanding though, and pumped hydro storage was one of the "batteries" they were counting in the "wind, solar, and batteries" side of the comparison. i would like clarification on that though.
at any rate, i do agree with the study's overall conclusion that a blended approach is the best path to decarbonization, but i think it's misleading to use that study to downplay the cost disadvantage when it comes to nuclear. an effective blended approach needs to take stock of the advantages and disadvantages of both wind/solar and nuclear to get an accurate picture of which is more appropriate for which situation.
Nuclear energy is not bad
