So What Happened?Â
Before prom night, Dexter (unfortunately) bumped into Juliette Palmer dancing down the street one night. She told him that they were going to go do something awesome. It was going to be life changing. They should have known that something was wrong- maybe they did- but they followed her nonetheless. Dexter never thought theyâd be face to face with all powerful First Warlock, Engel, but there he was. The magic boost that Engel gave Dexter was like nothing theyâd ever felt before... They felt like they were gonna die. Theyâd never felt more alive.
Calling Ian Morrison in a panic, shaking from the power coursing through their veins, everything they touched dissolving or turning into frickinâ skittles, Dexter needed saving. Juliette was too busy twirling around the trees and laughing. After that night, Dexter stopped using their magic.
Then, Dexter Harrison was having the biggest, most romantic, night of their life with official girlfriend Hailie Tyler on prom night (and Jason Bennett...). They were living life mostly in their own bubble- if you donât count Hailieâs brief ghosting at the after party (with Kat Jones). Point was, it was a great night! And Dexter was dressed by the amazing Ian, so was a real diamond!
The next day, everyone finds out about Effy and Leo. Ian tells Dexter the truth about what happened - Juliette Palmer had killed them both and was now a warlock. It hit Dexter like a freight train. They should have known something like this was going to happen. They should have tried to help Juliette, keep her away from magic. They shoulda, coulda, woulda.
Graduation, Founderâs Festival... The world ends, you know? Dexter does all they can to keep their loved ones safe. They also dedicated at least a year of their life to the affectionately/tragically dubbed âSave Julietteâ bandwagon. Spoiler alert: Juliette did want to be saved. Dexter did their best though, even getting into scrapes with Chris Andrews who was always buzzing around.
Dexter becomes a Teaching Assistant at Havensdale High, keeping the students safe with magic in these trying times under the #Dome. They try not to judge, but after everything theyâve been through, they still canât stand warlocks. They donât understand Ianâs infatuation with Olivia Winters or Mark Morrisonâs ârelationshipâ with Evelyn Prescott. #sideye
There was a ring in Dexterâs drawer in the apartment he now shared with Hailie when June 2016 came around. A ring for her. It was the second year anniversary from D-Day when Ian tried one last time to reach his sister Meghan Morrison. None of them could have anticipated that she would retaliate by snapping his neck.
It all happened so fast... No one was moving. Why was no one doing anything!? Dexter had to step in. They had to. It was the first big spell, the first big surge of power that theyâd used since Juliette took them to Engelâs. They knew what they wanted-- they knew what would happen if they got it. Dexter Harrison brought Ian Morrison back to life and for that, they became a Warlock.
In iconic fashion, the moment their humanity flipped off, Dexter tossed their suede jacket over their shoulder-- enchanting it into a much cooler leather jacket. They smooched Meghan and peaced out of there forever!
Not caring at all was a new thing. Dexter is chilling all day, every day and spends every day truly not giving a F-U-C-K! Was that great for their relationship with Hailie? Nah but whatever, man. Technically, they were on-again, off-again from June 2016--February 2017 when her dad ended up in a magically induced coma. Too bad, so sad. She asked for Dexterâs help-- they said ânahâ. End of story.

Chapter 10: NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME, OR A GOOD TIME
Chapter 9 (PIPER IX)- NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME, OR A GOOD TIME
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES AND TRAUMA
PRETTY PRIVILEGE PROBLEM PROTEGEE PAYS
PJOHOOPJOHOOPJOHOO
Nico tried to tell himself he was being paranoid as he offered to take the book from his sister. Nobody had nearly even died for once! Kind of, technically, Jason just would have fallen into an endless sleep which was only courting deathâŚ
Hazelâs calm confidence in the face of all this shook him, enough he didnât feel like a fool for once. He was kind of jealous why she wasnât a mess, and just as impressed.Â
So he read without the expectation that anyone was going to finish their long-term agreement with Thanatos. The opposite in fact.
PIPER IX
PIPER DREAMED ABOUT HER LAST DAY with her dad.
âWell this is going to emotionally slap us all in the face,â Percy sighed. He had a little too much experience with last goodbyes.
Nico grumbled in agreement it was just his luck.
Willâs stomach flipped and knotted in pain as he remembered that poor mortal theyâd left out there. Despite finally being home and having no desire to leave in the immediate future, heâd still get on a pegasus right now and go check on him again if heâd thought he was welcome. The look on Piperâs face as theyâd departed led him to believe he wouldnât be.
They were on the beach near Big Sur, taking a break from surfing. The morning had been so perfect, Piper knew something had to go wrong soonâa rabid horde of paparazzi, or maybe a great white shark attack. No way her luck could hold.
Leo chuckled, though there wasnât anything particularly funny about that. Heâd liked hanging out with Piper at the Wilderness School though for exactly this reason. When he said stuff like that, she nodded, and gave him a rare smile. Heâd disillusioned himself into having a crush on her for a while, but even those first weeks it had never been more than a joking idea. Sheâd been a good friend to him, and he hoped her dad was doing okay. It was so strange to be here without her.
But so far, theyâd had excellent waves, an overcast sky, and a mile of oceanfront completely to themselves. Dad had found this out-of-the-way spot, rented a beachfront villa and the properties on either side, and somehow managed to keep it secret. If he stayed there too long, Piper knew the photographers would find him. They always did.
Nico really hoped this girl was having a quiet moment with her dad in California right now. That his broken eyes had finally gotten to see his daughter and some life had come back to him. Piper was already going to have enough struggles in the future on the godly side, heâd always hope more kids besides Percy had as many options in a home as they could.
âNice job out there, Pipes.âÂ
âHehe, Pipes, surfing,â Percy grinned his goofy smile. Annabethâs heart fluttered as she grinned with him always finding the simplest things to smile about.
He gave her the smile he was famous for: perfect teeth, dimpled chin, a twinkle in his dark eyes that always made grown women scream and ask him to sign their bodies in permanent marker. (Seriously, Piper thought, get a life.)
âIâve never been that invested in a famous person,â Annabeth said blandly, and sheâd actually met a few of her idols.
âEh, humans arenât as accustomed as we are to being around otherworldly figures,â Thalia shrugged in agreement.Â
His close-cropped black hair gleamed with salt water. âYouâre getting better at hanging ten.â
Piper flushed with pride, though she suspected Dad was just being nice. She still spent most of her time wiping out. It took special talent to run over yourself with a surfboard. Her dad was the natural surferâwhich made no sense since heâd been raised a poor kid in Oklahoma, hundreds of miles from the oceanâbut he was amazing on the curls. Piper wouldâve given up surfing a long time ago except it let her spend time with him. There werenât many ways she could do that.
They could all hear the sting of jealousy rising in Nicoâs voice, even knowing the conclusion of this poor mortal probably set to die in this future if they hadnât intervened. Will drummed his fingers on his knees and knew there was no easy bandaid for this one, but he always wished there was.
Hazel murmured something to him. He nodded and shrugged and they werenât sure what, but he was smiling just a bit as he kept going.
âSandwich?â Dad dug into the picnic basket his chef, Arno, had made. âLetâs see: turkey pesto, crabcake wasabi âah, a Piper special. Peanut butter and jelly.â
âThe heck is pesto?â Percy asked with interest, heâd always try anything once, and all of that sounded delicious.Â
âHerby, green, paste,â Nico tried to think how to describe it. He recalled his sister raving about it once. Heâd tried some a few times now and loved it. âItâs really satisfying, lingers on the tongue without being too heavy and can bring a quality of freshness to more carby, starch heavy dishes.â* He sounded so much like a food critic Will was flabbergasted when this hobby had reared its head and instantly wanted to know more.Â
Percy gave him a spectacularly blank look, but didnât seem deterred.
âI suddenly miss the magic fridges,â Thalia sighed. They really hadnât been at this long enough for lunch to even be close, but she wouldnât say no to sneaking into the kitchens for some of these if Percy tried to.Â
âI want to know what about it makes it a Piper Special,â Jason waved to hush the two.
She took the sandwich, though her stomach was too upset to eat. She always asked for PB&J. Piper was vegetarian, for one thing. She had been ever since theyâd driven past that slaughterhouse in Chino and the smell had made her insides want to come outside. But it was more than that. PB&J was simple food, like a regular kid would have for lunch.
âI hear where sheâs coming from,â Percy assured, âbut I hope she wouldnât be that opposed if I mixed crabcake wasabi with PB&J.â
âYour stomach should be a crime,â Nico rolled his eyes.Â
âHang on, you eat crab?â Hazel asked. Son of Poseidon, eating seafood? Theyâd told her he could talk to the fishâŚ
âNot in front of the fish, but yeah,â Percy shrugged. It really wasnât hard to separate the issue. He still couldnât eat burgers near the Statue of Liberty though, just in case someone caught a glimpse of him chowing down and decided to show Bessie his disloyalty.
Sometimes she pretended her dad had actually made it for her, not a personal chef from France who liked to wrap the sandwich in gold leaf paper with a light-up sparkler instead of a toothpick.
âNow that is a Happy Meal,â Will snickered. âIf she doesn't want it Iâd be okay with such extravagance!â
âAh the things we become immune to,â Leo rolled his eyes. He lit enough stuff on fire by accident not to want sparklers in his food.
Couldnât anything be simple? Thatâs why she turned down the fancy clothes Dad always offered, the designer shoes, the trips to the salon. She cut her own hair with a pair of plastic Garfield safety scissors, deliberately making it uneven. She preferred to wear beat-up running shoes, jeans, a T-shirt, and her old Polartec jacket from the time they went snowboarding.
And she hated the snobby private schools Dad thought were good for her. She kept getting herself kicked out. He kept finding more schools.
Yesterday, sheâd pulled her biggest heist yetâdriving that âborrowedâ BMW out of the dealership. She had to pull a bigger stunt each time, because it took more and more to get Dadâs attention.
Hazel could barely wrap her mind around all heights a human could reach just being dismissed like that. Piper had the entirety of the world at the tips of her fingers, and it didnât even sound like there was a curse attached except the one she brought upon herself.
Now she regretted it. Dad didnât know yet.
Sheâd meant to tell him that morning. Then heâd surprised her with this trip, and she couldnât ruin it. It was the first time theyâd had a day together in whatâthree months?
âWhatâs wrong?â He passed her a soda.
âDad, thereâs somethingââ
âHold on, Pipes. Thatâs a serious face. Ready for Any Three Questions?â
Theyâd been playing that game for yearsâher dadâs way of staying connected in the shortest possible amount of time. They could ask each other any three questions. Nothing off limits, and you had to answer honestly.
Annabeth struggled to swallow for a moment as she tried to imagine doing this with her dad. Three months between having a conversation was nothing new to her. If she suggested it to him, would he pay attention long enough to participate?
The rest of the time, Dad promised to stay out of her businessâwhich was easy, since he was never around.
Jason couldn't help but laugh at the number three showing up again, but it was tinged with a lot more than three emotions than just vague amusement. It wasnât lost on him that even if his life had been ânormalâ and heâd stayed with Thalia rather than being whisked off to some other camp, heâd still never have a parent like this.
Piper knew most kids would find a Q&A like this with their parents totally mortifying. But she looked forward to it. It was like surfingânot easy, but a way to feel like she actually had a father.
âFirst question,â she said. âMom.â
No surprise. That was always one of her topics.
Her dad shrugged with resignation. âWhat do you want to know, Piper? Iâve already told youâshe disappeared. I donât know why, or where she went. After you were born, she simply left. I never heard from her again.â
Percy had never heard of another demigod having such a similar interaction with their parent like him. He could imagine the guyâs face perfectly, the sad eyes, the hopeful smile. This guy had fallen in love with someone who couldnât love him back, and was left with a baby instead.
âDo you think sheâs still alive?â
It wasnât a real question. Dad was allowed to say he didnât know. But she wanted to hear how heâd answer.
He stared at the waves.
âYour Grandpa Tom,â he said at last, âhe used to tell me that if you walked far enough toward the sunset, youâd come to Ghost Country, where you could talk to the dead. He said a long time ago, you could bring the dead back; but then mankind messed up. Well, itâs a long story.â
Nico took a deep breath to stop himself from screaming. How did this keep happening to him!?
He only let himself grumble for a moment though, his interest was peaked to hear a new take on a death story.
âLike the Land of the Dead for the Greeks,â Piper remembered. âIt was in the west, too. And Orpheusâhe tried to bring his wife back.â
Dad nodded. A year before, heâd had his biggest role as an Ancient Greek king.
âHeâs an actor,â Annabeth finally said in relief, even smacking herself on the forehead. âOh my gosh, Trysten McLean! I remember now, he played Tyndareus in King of Sparta!â She tapped her chin for a moment before shrugging, âit really wasn't a good portrayal, they only referenced having Helen as a child and she was his step-child! And donât get me started on the rest of the accuracies, or lack thereof in that movie.â
âBut the choreography was insanely good,â Percy shrugged.
âInsanely, I wish we had wires to do some of those stunts,â she nodded. âAnd the costumes, werenât, the worst in the city, but donât get me started on that battle armor. Oh, and they had an amazing replica of the theater of-â
âIâm positive Piper would appreciate you two so much right now,â Jason chuckled. He wondered if heâd seen the movie. He had no strong sense of the idea, but he almost hoped he had. That heâd had days where heâd gone to the movies with friends tooâŚthough the wistful idea only put a weight in his chest at how that didnât seem likely the more he tried to conjure up the idea.
Thalia made a face too, but more for the idea being presented here now that Piperâs dad was an actor, a profession she unreasonably hated for personal reasons. Gods it really was like the universe was trying to set her little brother up with the worst girl possible in every way Thalia could imagine, and it entirely was not Piperâs doing.
Piper had helped him research the mythsâall those old stories about people getting turned to stone and boiled in lakes of lava. Theyâd had a fun time reading together, and it made Piperâs life seem not so bad.
They all laughed in agreement, Percy hardest of all.Â
For a while sheâd felt closer to her dad, but like everything, it didnât last.
âLot of similarities between Greek and Cherokee,â Dad agreed. Wonder what your grandpa would think if he saw us now, sitting at the end of the western land. Heâd probably think weâre ghosts.â
âAw, are we not getting the story?â Will sounded as disappointed as Nico felt.
âMaybe Piper will like to look it up herself and share it,â Nico said.
âAre you guys trying to provoke a fourth pantheon into our life?â Percy groaned. Annabeth patted his shoulder in understanding and Hazel was chuckling at them.
âSo youâre saying you believe those stories? You think Mom is dead?â
His eyes watered, and Piper saw the sadness behind them. She figured thatâs why women were so attracted to him. On the surface, he seemed confident and rugged, but his eyes held so much sadness. Women wanted to find out why. They wanted to comfort him, and they never could. Dad told Piper it was a Cherokee thingâthey all had that darkness inside them from generations of pain and suffering.
Hazelâs breath caught in the back of her throat in surprise. Nico read past that so casually, just the slightest bit of sadness in his voice he clearly didnât mean to linger on. It was an idea that floored her, that others whoâd had to live through being different and separated still might exist in this day and age and wonât just think she couldnât let go of the past.
But Piper thought it was more than that.
âI donât believe the stories,â he said. âTheyâre fun to tell, but if I really believed in Ghost Country, or animal spirits, or Greek gods ⌠I donât think I could sleep at night. Iâd always be looking for somebody to blame.â
There was an awkward moment of silence where nobody in the room wanted to look at anyone else. This poor guy had seen something while being held captive, the Mist had started to fail the longer he was around all those horrors.
Wherever he and Piper were now, they hoped he was doing okay.
Somebody to blame for Grandpa Tom dying of lung cancer, Piper thought, before Dad got famous and had the money to help. For Momâthe only woman heâd ever loved âabandoning him without even a good-bye note, leaving him with a newborn girl he wasnât ready to care for. For his being so successful, and yet still not happy.
âI donât know if sheâs alive,â he said. âBut I do think she might as well be in Ghost Country, Piper. Thereâs no getting her back. If I believed otherwise ⌠I donât think I could stand that, either.â
Will remembered how Beryl Grace had handled that kind of rejection when she knew the truth, and most days he couldnât decide how to judge his mom for her trying to let Apollo go but never what he could have really given her aside from him. Even Sally had ended up in a seriously bad situation to protect her gift from Poseidon. It truly didnât seem there was a perfect solution out there for the gods and their mortal lovers.
Behind them, a car door opened. Piper turned, and her heart sank. Jane was marching toward them in her business suit, wobbling over the sand in her high heels, her PDA in hand. The look on her face was partly annoyed, partly triumphant, and Piper knew sheâd been in touch with the police.
Please fall down, Piper prayed. If thereâs any animal spirit or Greek god that can help, make Jane take a header. Iâm not asking for permanent damage, just knock her out for the rest of the day, please?
But Jane kept advancing.
Leoâs brain hard switched to a crude design of a device to trip anyone and never cause permanent damage. How to do so and hide it in the sand without it messing up all the gears? He laughed lightly with the others, because theyâd all wanted this pocket invention at some point in their past.
âDad,â Piper said quickly. âSomething happened yesterdayâŚâ
But heâd seen Jane, too. He was already reconstructing his business face. Jane wouldnât be here if it wasnât serious. A studio head calledâa project fell throughâor Piper had messed up again.
âWeâll get back to that, Pipes,â he promised. âIâd better see what Jane wants. You know how she is.â
YesâPiper knew. Dad trudged across the sand to meet her. Piper couldnât hear them talking, but she didnât need to. She was good at reading faces. Jane gave him the facts about the stolen car, occasionally pointing at Piper like she was a disgusting pet that had whizzed on the carpet.
Dadâs energy and enthusiasm drained away. He gestured for Jane to wait. Then he walked back to Piper. She couldnât stand that look in his eyesâlike sheâd betrayed his trust.
âYou told me you would try, Piper,â he said.
âDad, I hate that school. I canât do it. I wanted to tell you about the BMW, butââ
âTheyâve expelled you,â he said. âA car, Piper? Youâre sixteen next year. I would buy you any car you want. How could youââ
âYou mean Jane would buy me a car?â Piper demanded. She couldnât help it. The anger just welled up and spilled out of her. âDad, just listen for once. Donât make me wait for you to ask your stupid three questions. I want to go to regular school. I want you to take me to parentsâ night, not Jane. Or homeschool me! I learned so much when we read about Greece together. We could do that all the time! We couldââ
âDonât make this about me,â her dad said. âI do the best I can, Piper. Weâve had this conversation.â
No, she thought. Youâve cut off this conversation. For years.
Her dad sighed. âJaneâs talked to the police, brokered a deal. The dealership wonât press charges, but you have to agree to go to a boarding school in Nevada. They specialize in problems ⌠in kids with tough issues.â
âThatâs what I am.â Her voice trembled. âA problem.â
âPiper ⌠you said youâd try. You let me down. I donât know what else to do.â
âDo anything,â she said. âBut do it yourself! Donât let Jane handle it for you. You canât just send me away.â
Annabeth knew that feeling all too well. Powerless, unloved, seeing a stranger in your parents face and begging for them to listen to you.
And never getting it back. Not until it was too late.
Sheâd never questioned Piperâs adamance about going home to her dad when she heard he was safe. She wanted to call and check on her, even though Piper had no reason to answer the phone to a stranger. She wanted to check on her anyways, make sure she was still okay.
Even if her dad did listen to what she needed, instead of thinking he knew best, it felt so awful at what it had taken to get there. A corner of Piperâs mind that wasnât going to be erased any time soon.
Dad looked down at the picnic basket. His sandwich sat uneaten on a piece of gold leaf paper. Theyâd planned for a whole afternoon in the surf. Now that was ruined.
Piper couldnât believe heâd really give in to Janeâs wishes. Not this time. Not on something as huge as boarding school.
âGo see her,â Dad said. âSheâs got the details.â
âDad âŚâ
He looked away, gazing at the ocean like he could see all the way to Ghost Country. Piper promised herself she wouldnât cry. She headed up the beach toward Jane, who smiled coldly and held up a plane ticket. As usual, sheâd already arranged everything. Piper was just another problem of the day that Jane could now check off her list.
Jason knew it was ridiculous, but he had a feeling Piper had needed these fake memories to like him from the vicious edge to those thoughts. If heâd been anything like his normal self around her, he might remind Piper of Jane.
Piperâs dream changed.
She stood on a mountaintop at night, city lights glimmering below. In front of her, a bonfire blazed. Purplish flames seemed to cast more shadows than light, but the heat was so intense, her clothes steamed.
Jason winced, the ridiculous urge to take off his purple shirt and cast it in the fire as if the color had betrayed him. He really hoped that wasnât symbolic of somethingâŚhe wouldnât betray Piper would he? He wasnât capable of thatâŚthe idea rested easily in place though if he found out about her without finding out everything, things might not go so wellâŚ
âThis is your second warning,â a voice rumbled, so powerful it shook the earth. Piper had heard that voice before in her dreams. Sheâd tried to convince herself it wasnât as scary as she remembered, but it was worse.
Behind the bonfire, a huge face loomed out of the darkness. It seemed to float above the flames, but Piper knew it must be connected to an enormous body. The crude features mightâve been chiseled out of rock. The face hardly seemed alive except for its piercing white eyes, like raw diamonds, and its horrible frame of dreadlocks, braided with human bones. It smiled, and Piper shivered.
âYouâll do what youâre told,â the giant said. âYouâll go on the quest. Do our bidding, and you may walk away alive. Otherwiseââ
He gestured to one side of the fire. Piperâs father was hanging unconscious, tied to a stake.
She tried to cry out. She wanted to call to her dad, and demand the giant let him go, but her voice wouldnât work.
âIâll be watching,â the giant said. âServe me, and you both live. You have the word of Enceladus. Fail me ⌠well, Iâve slept for millennia, young demigod. I am very hungry. Fail, and Iâll eat well.â
The giant roared with laughter. The earth trembled. A crevice opened at Piperâs feet, and she tumbled into darkness.
She woke feeling like sheâd been trampled by an Irish step-dancing troupe. Her chest hurt, and she could barely breathe. She reached down and closed her hand around the hilt of the dagger Annabeth had given herâKatoptris, Helen of Troyâs weapon.
It was no great feeling to be hearing another dream, another threat in such great detail, but it was hardly new to any of them except Leo. His nightmares were rooted in the past.Â
The instinct to reach out for a weapon upon awakening, or die otherwise was one they all learned fast.
Piper not even being here a whole twenty-four hours might have been a record though. Will wasnât entirely sure how heâd do a study on that, but he wanted to.
So Camp Half-Blood hadnât been a dream.
âHow are you feeling?â someone asked.
Piper tried to focus. She was lying in a bed with a white curtain on one side, like in a nurseâs office. That redheaded girl, Rachel Dare, sat next to her. On the wall was a poster of a cartoon satyr who looked disturbingly like Coach Hedge with a thermometer sticking out of his mouth. The caption read: Donât let sickness get your goat!
Percy leaned eagerly in his seat to hear that Piper awoke with drool on her chin or at least the worst bad breath ever. Then the cycle of this poor girl reliving his life would really be complete, and hopefully the outcome too.
âWhereââ Piperâs voice died when she saw the guy at the door.
He looked like a typical California surfer dudeâbuff and tan, blond hair, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt. But he had hundreds of blue eyes all over his bodyâalong his arms, down his legs, and all over his face. Even his feet had eyes, peering up at her from between the straps of his sandals.
âThatâs Argus,â Rachel said, âour head of security. Heâs just keeping an eye on things ⌠so to speak.â
âDoes everybody feel the need to make that joke?â Percy rolled his eyes.
âDonât be mad, she just wants to be involved in all our traditions,â Will chuckled.
Argus nodded. The eye on his chin winked.
âWhereâ?â Piper tried again, but she felt like she was talking through a mouthful of cotton.
âYouâre in the Big House,â Rachel said. âCamp offices. We brought you here when you collapsed.â
âYou grabbed me,â Piper remembered. âHeraâs voiceââ
âIâm so sorry about that,â Rachel said.
Percyâs feet itched to take him out where Rachel was, to make sure she knew not to apologize anytime a god hijacked her brain. It really wasnât her fault, the gods would do that even if she wasn't some Mist mouthpiece or whateverâŚeven though she did kind of ask for it and heâd warned her this oracle business was dangerous.
âBelieve me, it was not my idea to get possessed. Chiron healed you with some nectarââ
âNectar?â
âThe drink of the gods. In small amounts, it heals demigods, if it doesnâtâahâburn you to ashes.â
âOh. Fun.â
âRight!â Leo burst out laughing, though he hadnât the chance to taste any yet and was clearly lamenting nobody had shouted in his face so he could pass out next.
âIâm pretty sure you would still burn up on the inside just because you canât on the outside,â Annabeth cautioned.
âAh, lame,â Leo sighed.
Rachel sat forward. âDo you remember your vision?â
Piper had a moment of dread, thinking she meant the dream about the giant. Then she realized Rachel was talking about what happened in Heraâs cabin.
âSomethingâs wrong with the goddess,â Piper said. âShe told me to free her, like sheâs trapped. She mentioned the earth swallowing us, and a fiery one, and something about the solstice.â
In the corner, Argus made a rumbling sound in his chest. His eyes all fluttered at once.
Annabeth sighed, wishing Rachel had thought to ask Piper this after Argus had left. Now that Piper was awake and coherent, the danger had passed, and there were still water stains in the basement from last time.
âHera created Argus,â Rachel explained. âHeâs actually very sensitive when it comes to her safety. Weâre trying to keep him from crying, because last time that happened âŚwell, it caused quite a flood.â
Argus sniffled. He grabbed a fistful of Kleenex from the bedside table and started dabbing eyes all over his body.
âSo âŚâ Piper tried not to stare as Argus wiped the tears from his elbows.Â
âAww,â Hazel grinned at how sweet that was. It was no secret Hera was nobodyâs favorite goddess around these parts, but it felt good to hear that someone in camp was worried about her as more than just âOlympian In Peril,â like they were bothering to hear out her rescue as a court ordered ordeal.
âWhatâs happened to Hera?â
âWeâre not sure,â Rachel said. âAnnabeth and Jason were here for you, by the way. Jason didnât want to leave you, but Annabeth had an ideaâsomething that might restore his memories.â
âThatâs ⌠thatâs great.â
Jason had been here for her? She wished sheâd been conscious for that. But if he got his memories back, would that be a good thing? She was still holding out hope that they really did know each other. She didnât want their relationship to be just a trick of the Mist.
Jason cringed that he was hoping the opposite. That Piperâs strange ideal of him would continue to fade the longer those implanted memories faded.
Thalia was much more clearly agitated about anyone trying to imply otherwise Jason would be a different person with all his memories. Sheâd spent time watching Jason and Percy at their most vulnerable, she knew who they were!
Get over yourself, she thought. If she was going to save her dad, it didnât matter whether Jason liked her or not. He would hate her eventually. Everyone here would.
âNot everyone,â Leo promised without looking up, as casual as could be. Heâd enjoyed being friends with Piper their few weeks together and while this place was freakishly awesome, heâd take his diminutive ass up to the highest point he could here and yell to make sure everyone knew what was at stake for her.Â
Annabeth smiled without surprise. Sheâd been in a similar boat once, convinced that a traitor was worth saving when nobody else believed it.Â
She looked down at the ceremonial dagger strapped to her side. Annabeth had said it was a sign of power and status, but not normally used in battle. All show and no substance. A fake, just like Piper. And its name was Katoptris, looking glass.
Percy was starting to get a funny feeling about this girl as he turned it all over in his mind, comparing herself to that thing. Her dad being a good looking actor, her charming voice, now this feeling of herâs- well, it was sort of what he assumed the average Aphrodite kid was like. Shallow, pretty vain, aka all show no substance. With the odd exception of Silena, whoâd overcome her own demons of showing one face while forced to betray them behind her dreams.
Maybe Piper and her had more in common?
She didnât dare unsheathe it again, because she couldnât bear to see her own reflection.
Nicoâs voice shook a little too hard at that, he knew he sounded pathetic but really hoped they just assumed he was getting into Piperâs mood.
He liked being with Will, he wasnât ashamed of his crush on Percy anymore, but it still left a terrifying blank space in him of what came next. Having friends really only meant there was more to lose if- no, when Gaea came back. He had the power to stop that, he knew he did, but he kept letting himself be talked out of it.
Heâd earned his place here at Camp by proving he was on Percyâs side, but he didnât feel like that gave him a free pass to sit around and do nothing. Heâd barely slept in his cabin last night agonizing over what came next.
âDonât worry.â Rachel squeezed her arm. âJason seems like a good guy. He had a vision too, a lot like yours. Whateverâs happening with HeraâI think you two are meant to work together.â
Rachel smiled like this was good news, but Piperâs spirits plunged even further. Sheâd thought that this questâwhatever it wasâwould involve nameless people. Now Rachel was basically telling her: Good news! Not only is your dad being held ransom by a cannibal giant, you also get to betray the guy you like! How awesome is that?
âI always knew Rachel had a special way with words,â Percy said with a strained smile.
âThis really wasnât going to go better in any way,â Jason sounded much more resigned to the fact this was not going to end well and heâd still try to help Piper anyways.
âHey,â Rachel said. âNo need to cry. Youâll figure it out.â
Piper wiped her eyes, trying to get control of herself. This wasnât like her. She was supposed to be toughâa hardened car thief, the scourge of L.A. private schools. Here she was, crying like a baby.
âI never liked that expression,â Thalia rolled her eyes. âBabies have plenty good reasons to cry too, itâs the only way to express themselves. Nobody removes our tear ducts as we age!â
âSecret initiation into the hunters debunked,â Percy snorted.
âHow can you know what Iâm facing?â
Rachel shrugged. âI know itâs a hard choice, and your options arenât great. Like I said, I get hunches sometimes. But youâre going to be claimed at the campfire. Iâm almost sure. When you know who your godly parent is, things might be clearer.â
Clearer, Piper thought. Not necessarily better.
âShe really is a quick witted girl,â Jason smiled.
Annabeth nodded in agreement, a part of her still hoping Piper was her half-sibling, though she couldnât imagine as of now what Trysten McLean had done to get Athenaâs attention.
âYou guys are depressing,â Will muttered. Heâd need to talk to Rachel about her pep-talks, or lack thereof in this case!
She sat up in bed. Her forehead ached like someone had driven a spike between her eyes. Thereâs no getting your mother back, her dad had told her. But apparently, tonight, her mom might claim her. For the first time, Piper wasnât sure she wanted that.
Hazel nodded in understanding. Growing up with Pluto as her dad had left a weight on her, the curse she could blame on his oily face hadnât given her much comfort.
âI hope itâs Athena.â She looked up, afraid Rachel might make fun of her, but the oracle just smiled.
âRachel only makes fun of Percy like a proper Oracle,â Thalia smirked.
Percy wanted to protest, but considering the mummy had once snubbed him for Zoe, it didnât feel like an untrue statement that the spirit might have it out for him like every other Greek thing.
âPiper, I donât blame you. Truthfully? I think Annabeth is hoping that too. You guys are a lot alike.â
Annabeth smiled in agreement and didnât deny it. Jason was in total agreement this could only be a good thing if true, he well knew how useful having a child of Athena would be on his misadventures.
The comparison made Piper feel even guiltier. âAnother hunch? You donât know anything about me.â
âYouâd be surprised.â
âYouâre just saying that because youâre an oracle, arenât you? Youâre supposed to sound all mysterious.â
Rachel laughed. âDonât be giving away my secrets, Piper.Â
âThatâs Percyâs specialty,â Thalia smirked. âMaybe sheâs one of those long lost siblings Poisideon teased you about.â
âI could live with this sister,â Percy agreed without a moment of hesitation. Maybe instead of his insane water powers, she had taken more after the charming siren part of sealife.
And donât worry. Things will work outâjust maybe not the way you plan.â
âThatâs not making me feel better.â
Somewhere in the distance, a conch horn blew. Argus grumbled and opened the door.
âDinner?â Piper guessed.
âYou slept through it,â Rachel said. âTime for the campfire. Letâs go find out who you are.â
âWithout dinner?â Percy looked at the book for the tragedy it was, now more for Piperâs life than Jasonâs though.
âRelax, Iâm sure whoever her new siblings are will sneak her into the kitchens without getting her killed after the show,â Will assured as he took the book.Â

Thank you OP, this has bothered me since HoH when Jason was talking to Nico. I get what he was trying to say, but he came off as absolutely insensitive. Like saying to Nico that if he just gave the others a chance theyâd all support him, when there is absolutely no evidence of it. Piper and Leo were openly talking shit about him on the argo II, which never really gets resolved either, we never see them apologize or anything, weâre just left with âwell, now theyâre all bestiesâ. Literally everyone on the Argo II but Hazel was put off by Nico. Even Frank, even though he at least is too nice to say anything openly. And Nico absolutely picks up on this. Iâll correct myself, other than Hazel the only person who doesnât seem to have negative feelings about Nico but is actually sympathetic is Annabeth, but they donât get to interact as much, probably also because of Nicoâs feelings of jealousy. But he does admit Annabeth has never been mean to him and was always pretty accepting, which means he can absolutely tell objectively when people are or are not bothered by him. Also friendly reminder that Annabeth was the one who stood up to Hera in BOTL when she said Nico didnât belong at camp, and thatâs how their disagreement started. Meanwhile Percy had just agreed with Nico that he didnât belong at camp, not bothering to try and change his mind. Nevermind that they drive it home relentlessly that camp is vital for demigods. That monsters will find them. That kids of the big three especially attract so many monsters the more powerful they grow, and Nico is only eleven. That not staying at camp is almost a death sentence. Nevermind he doesnât have a family to go to, so what exactly are Nicoâs options. He is heavily implied to have lived on the streets when he wasnât staying in the underworld.
I also completely agree with you, it could have been a perfect way to parallel his experience as gay, without having to put blatant homophobia in the books, which could be triggering to some. I also think itâs interesting and could work in the parallel how people react differently to Nico and Hazel. Sure, some people do dislike Hazel on principle as a child of the underworld, but most seem to think sheâs ok. At least the seven never seem creeped out by her being a child of the underworld, because as they put it âNico is creepy while Hazel is not.â Nico gives âunderworld vibesâ in a way Hazel does not and is penalized for it. Itâs almost as if saying, âsure itâs fine youâre an underworld kid, just donât push it on our faces that you areâ. âAs long as we can ignore youâre an underworld kid and you donât look like it then weâre good.â âYou shouldnât be proud of what you are, you shouldnât put it on display.â YEAH, that reminds me of something we hear that starts with homo and ends with phobia. The double standard is real. Which also puts Hazel in the unconfortable position of having her friends affection be almost conditional. âNo but youâre fine. Youâre not like him. Youâre normal.â Yikes-
My personal headcanon for Nico believing now that yeah, it was only because you were pushing people away that you didnât have friends before, is just his own habit of blaming himself speaking.Â
I would also like to look at the situation after TLO in a neutral way. Sure, maybe not everyone was freaked out by Nico. Maybe not everyone pushed him away. But people did. We know people at camp can be mean sometimes, we have seen them ostracize Percy too several times, both in TLT and SOM, but Percy had someone with him. He had Grover, and later Annabeth and Tyson as his support system. So maybe there were a few people being willing to be Nicoâs friends, like Will, but Nico didnât know them at the time, and when he got to camp the only people he knew really were Percy and Annabeth, who had just gotten in a relationship, were busy discovering life as a couple, and who he preferred to avoid because of his feelings toward Percy. So even if it wasnât every single person in camp who hated him, seeing some of them openly reject him, with no safe people to turn to, and him probably being already sensitive to rejection, Nicoâs reaction makes perfect sense.
Actually one thing that really bothers me with the whole "No one hated you for being the son of Hades, you just pushed everyone away" thing is that... well, first off as I've said before we know it isn't true because every single POV character we've had since Titan's Curse who's interacted with Nico except Hazel comments on how creepy Nico is for being the son of Hades so it doesn't work even slightly, but also. I mean. Nico spends so much time being told "This thing that you are and cannot stop being is wrong and evil. It's wrong and evil because we've decided it is. Your father, the one adult in your life you can even sort of depend on? He's bad because he's the god of the dead. No, no, it's nothing he's done exactly, in fact when we accused him of a crime before it turned out he was actually a victim in said crime, he didn't do anything; it's what he is and how that's caused him to distance himself from the people who vocally hate him and don't want him around that makes him untrustworthy, and you should also know better than to trust him. He's Hades after all. That makes him bad," with the subtext that Nico very clearly picks up on being "and you're bad because you're like him". Now, if you think about that, you may pick up on a little bit of applicability in there for the story of a kid struggling with internalized homophobia! Just a teensy bit! It was a perfect way of getting into how awful it is to have people you like and care about openly think something about you that you can't change makes you wrong even if they don't realize they're doing it and even if they really do love you (and in fact how in a lot of ways it's worse when you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they do love you aside from That Part) without having to make any characters actually homophobic (thinking the Underworld's creepy is significantly more sympathetic and easier to justify and get characters to work through in a fictional setting than them being real-world bigots would be, after all), and Rick fumbled the ball at the finish line!
If you're reading the whole "Hades and Underworld stuff is Bad And Creepy so Nico is Bad And Creepy" thing as being a metaphor for homophobia (or honestly any other kind of bigotry, but given Nico's problems homophobia fits best) as is really easy to do even before he's revealed to be gay the way that plot point gets dropped in favour of "Well actually it was fine the whole time and Nico just decided that everyone hated him with no evidence other than every POV character except his sister openly thinking he's creepy and at least one person telling him to his face that he shouldn't have trusted his own father who up to that point as far as we know had never lied to him solely because his father is the god of the dead but never mind that, it was all in his head!" kind of feels like Rick's going "Oh, it's not that serious" when uh. incorrect. Which I'm sure wasn't his intention, Rick does try to be sensitive about these things, but it is very much a thing that insisting that a character (whose arc features a huge aspect of overcoming internalized homophobia developed by growing up in the 1930s) saying in no uncertain terms that he's been made to feel unwelcome because of who his father is when we know from the other POV characters' views of him and responses to him that his view of it is correct doesn't need to be taken seriously because "Oh it's all in his head" is... a little uncomfortable! And made worse by the fact that while Will learning to see that the Underworld isn't an inherently awful place is an excellent subplot and we love to see the character growth (and I still firmly believe that Will is infinitely better about it than basically any other character for the primary reason that at least he has a specific reason for thinking the way he does, being in the Underworld is literally killing him and also he's the only character who does learn he was wrong to think that way, so no one start shit about it on this post) he hasn't had that character development at the end of HoO, and the fact that we hear this "You pushed yourself away" viewpoint from someone who also has issues with the Underworld and it's still allowed to stand without argument makes it so much worse. Rick, there's an entire subplot in TSatS about how Nico does in fact still hear even people who genuinely and deeply love him and hate the thought of doing anything to harm him talk shit about his home and how that hurts him and they need to learn to do better. Why are you still trying to say it's all in Nico's head when you keep hammering home that it isn't?

âWeâre a well-oiled team of military-grade kindergarteners,â his best friend, and the only other human on the ship who would understand what kindergarten was, continued chastising him and his companions. âThe level of education and training among the three of you eclipses that of the entire rest of the members of this operation,â Annabeth continued, pointing her finger individually at himself, his pilot Jason, and his Chief Science Officer Nico. âYou know, Iâm not that surprised with you, Percy, but you are our XO so you should really be more responsible,â he winced at that, still feeling a bit of imposter syndrome at being the Commander of the USS Olympus. âJason, shouldnât you be piloting a ship or something?â At that, he saluted her and did an about face before scampering off to get into more trouble. âAnd you, youâre definitely way too responsible to have gotten mixed up with this Seaweed Brain and Sparky, so whatâs in this tomfoolery for you?â
Nico, the only Neptunian on the ship, shifted his large black wings self consciously under the scrutiny of their Chief of Operations. Percy, as the Commander of the vessel, felt obligated to protect his usually stoic and well-behaved⌠acquaintance? Di Angelo was reserved, almost standoffish, and resented anyone who tried to stick up for him for some reason, but that didnât stop Percyâs stupid seaweed brain from doing so. Hence the acquaintance. Percy was 99% sure Di Angelo didnât consider him a friend. But he was nice to Percy and a great officer, so Percy considered him his friend.
âIt was my fault, Annie,â he used her childhood nickname carefully, not knowing whether it would soften her up or piss her off more. He was hoping for softening. âIt was just another one of Jason and my dumb ideas that we thought we would need a scientist to help with, and we didnât want to piss off Leo by involving him in it. You know how he is about his engineer and warp cores and whatnot,â Percy held his hands up placatingly. âLeave Di Angelo out of this, he has sciencey things to do, isnât that right?â Percy side-eyed his companion who (not surprisingly) rolled his eyes.
âI try not to get involved with human pranks or even Jovian mischief, but Officer Grace and First Officer Jackson were about to be meddling with my linguistics team. It isnât my duty to tell my superiors what to do, so I sought out the next best option, supervising and ensuring no lasting damage was done to the physical or emotional state of the linguistics team. Now,â Here Percy held in a smirk as Di Angelo shrugged. âIf they caused interference with the machinery of the ship, that wouldnât be my expertise, so I allowed it to happen and-â Percy held back a laugh as the other male started speaking even faster to get everything out as Annabeth turned redder and redder. âIâm very sorry about that, truly, but I had no control over the situation.â
âNo control over the situation? You three broke our LIT machine and now we have to go back to Earth as soon as we pass close enough to fix it. Soon enough nobody on this ship will understand each other,â the woman across from them crossed her arms and Percy shrunk back a bit.
âI want to make a joke about a machine being called âLIT,â but I feel like it isnât the right time,â he muttered. âI know the Linguistic Inhibition Technology is important, but most of us have a working understanding of at least one other language, so it shouldnât be a huge issue, right?â
âYou know it works by connecting to the implant technology in our brains, so as it shuts down one by one, members of this ship from spaces stations and planets far and wide will have no clue why they suddenly canât understand their XO, or their Chief Officer, or their best friend. So you better explain this. And you have to tell them that weâre going straight back to Earth to fix it because no nearby planets have the same brain implant tech as us. Damn Terrans and their brand name technology copyrights,â Annabeth grumbled and finally turned around to walk off.
âHey, youâre Terran, too!â Percy shouted after her, but she just flipped him the bird.
âShe can do that?â Di Angelo asked, side-eyeing Percy.
âYeah, sheâs been my best friend since we were twelve. As long as she doesnât undermine my authority in front of everyone else, I donât really care. Iâve done way worse to her,â Percy laughed at the other manâs frown. âNothing bad, just pranks and things of that sort. Maybe when we get back to Earth we can show you where weâre from. You never set foot off of the training grounds while you were in school.â
âI would⌠like that,â Di Angelo paused and gave Percy a soft smile.
âGreat,â Percy patted the younger male on the shoulder and made his way to the Command Center.
Percy sat himself down in the rotating chair and pressed on the comms device.
âGooooood evening crew of the USS Olympus, this is your Commanding Officer, Percy Jackson, speaking,â he smiled at the engineering crew that was scuttling by, only for one of them to pause and look at him like he was speaking a different language⌠Whoops.
âThere was a malfunction with the Linguistic Inhibition Technology and we will be returning to Earth henceforth to repair it before the damage becomes problematic. You may experience glitches with your implant technology and may revert to only understanding your first language and those you have studied extensively. If somebody looks like theyâre not understanding what Iâm saying right now, please escort them to the linguistics team in Science Bay 3. Carry on. Jackson, out.â He clicked again and the mic turned off.
He sighed, this would be one of his bigger mistakes. They were supposed to be exploring, but they couldnât do that if nobody could speak to one another. One trip home couldnât hurt him, and he was sure Annabeth would be happy to see her father.
It wasnât until later after the Chief Officer meeting when someone finally asked Percy about Earth. For many of the non-humans on the ship, Earth was a place to get education and training to go out in the star fleet, and they never set foot outside the campus grounds, just like Di Angelo. But people had stopped asking him questions because Earth was basically âSpace Australia,â as Annabeth had explained to him. The adaptability of humans and their need to pack bond astounded many and horrified many others. So, he stopped talking about home.
It was a new member of their ship, Novax (a Vulcan who was a part of Leoâs engineering team), who asked him about it first.
âI hear Earth is 75% made of pure salt water, and is filled with animals of all kinds. Do you have a favorite water animal?â he asked Percy excitedly.
âDefinitely dolphins, though they arenât underwater creatures. Like humans they need oxygen to breathe, and come up for air very often. My favorite actual underwater species would have to be a hippocampus from Neptune. Iâve always wanted to go and see one, but my human anatomy prevents me from going on-planet,â Percy explained and sipped on his hot tea.
âThere are a million creatures in the ocean and you pick one that doesnât breathe underwater?â Clarisse grunted. His Chief Tactical Officer was a brutish Martian, but very specialized in weapons. âAnd your second favorite isnât even Terran.â
âWhat else do you know about the âoceanâ?â Novax breathed, leaning forward.
âEh, not much, Percy shrugged.
âIâm not sure I heard that correctly, maybe my LIT unit isnât functioning well,â another member of engineering asked, Nyssa. âYour planet is 75% water and you donât even know what is inside it?â
âI could tell you about the people who spend their life learning about what survives in the deep depths,â Percy looked up, knowing he had all of the non-Terrans hooked on every word. Even Di Angelo had paused in his note taking and was staring wide-eyed at Percy. âBut I donât know if youâd want to know.â
âNo we do!â Nyssa exclaimed. âThere are people who dedicate their lives to a place thatâs literally not navigable by humans, the main inhabitants of the planet?â
âWell as you said, most of the planet is water. Which means that coastal communities are filled with fisherman, whalers, swimmers, and more. I could tell you about some of those. I could also tell you about the scientists that spend years of their lives building bots that canât even come close to withstanding the pressure at the deepest depths without imploding, or I could tell you about those that do come close,â he shrugged.
âWhat happened to those?â
âThe video feed cut out after only seeing multiple rows of sharp, jagged teeth,â Annabeth answered, her sharp grin frightening those who hadnt noticed her. Some forgot that she was Terran, because she was also half Minervan.
âI could tell you about whales. Beautiful, they come in black and white or grey or blue. But they can be as big as almost 100 feet long. Thatâs as long as most pirate ships. And they could fit about 400 average sized humans in their mouths. You donât want to cross one of them. And they only live on the surface. The things that live in the deep,â Percy shuddered for effect. There were no Neptunians on the ship, so there were no natural water dwellers there, so all of his rapt listeners were shocked by this information. âThereâs the anglerfish. They light up the dark with an antenna on top of their heads, and the light lures in prey. But itâs so dim elsewhere that you donât see their big sharp teeth until youâre right up against them,â he murmured. âGiant squids are almost as big as whales but not nearly as peaceful and beautiful. They have eight arms and two tentacles that could wrap around any boat and crush it.â
âTen limbs?â Nyssa whispered, clearly disturbed.
âPlus, the Portuguese Man oâ War,â Percy shrugged nonchalantly. âAlso known as the floating terror. Itâs like a big blue jellyfish that sits innocently on top of the water with huge blue tentacles that sit just underneath with a sting strong enough to kill a full grown human.â
âDonât worry,â Annabeth grinned that shark grin again. âPercy wonât tell you about the stories of the old days. He doesnât want to scare you.â
âThat was the not scary part?â Novax gulped.
âAnyway, I just got notified that weâll be back on Earth in a few days, so brace yourselves,â and with that, she stood and left them all staring after her. When the door clicked shut, Percy had all eyes back on him. He shrugged.
âDonât look at me. I wasnât going to tell you about the kr- nevermind,â he stood. âDi Angelo, with me,â the younger officer stood, back to business and was at Percyâs side again in a moment. âClear your schedule, youâre spending shore leave with me, pal.â
âGreat,â came the deadpan reply.
âDonât sound so somber,â Percy rolled his eyes. âIâm just going to show you the beach and maybe a good gay bar. You need to let off some steam my dude.â
The other male reddened.
âThat is so⌠That isâŚâ he huffed. âHighly inappropriate.â he glared down at the ground and Percy felt a little bad, maybe the guy wasnât out? But it was clear he had a preference for males. Oh well, that foot was already in Percyâs mouth.
âFine. But I will be attending and I am a great dancer so youâre missing out,â he winked at the flustered officer and made his way back to his cabin. It would be an interesting few days.
He made a plan with Annabeth. Day one before shore leave, Percy would spread a rumor to Novax about the kraken. Bigger than a giant squid and meaner. Known to crush entire pirate ships in the olden days.
Day two, Annabeth would mention sirens to Nyssa. Hideous creatures that could lure you in with their voices and lead you to believe you were bringing your ship in to everything you ever wanted, when in reality you would crash your ships and then drown.
Day three, Percy would tell Leo about the Megalodon. A definitely very real shark so big you couldnât even imagine it. Percy shuddered at that one.
âBut, there are some good things,â Percy was speaking to Nico Di Angelo from his Commander chair, in ear shot of some of the participants of the conversation a few nights prior. âMermaids, the sirenâs nicer cousin species. And the lost city of Atlantis. Known to be a great and bountiful city, lost to the sea and cursed by the gods to be stuck down there forever. Some believe it still exists, but itâs within the Bermuda Triangle.â
âWhat, pray tell, is the Bermuda Triangle,â Clarisse sighed.
âHard to explain. Ships just⌠go in⌠and they never come out,â Annabeth shrugged. âPlanes go down. Ships wreck. People who go in donât come back out, so we donât know if Atlantis is really there or not.â
âThatâs⌠terrifying,â Novax whispered as he walked by.
Percy was sure he had created a healthy fear of Earthâs oceans in his crew. And he meant to, because while he loved the beach and swimming, he did want to make them shy away from the depths. They wouldnât do well to explore it.

Mist Memories
Leo Valdez x reader for his birthday ahhhh (even though it's angsty) with a platonic/developing jason x reader cameo at the end (lmao im sorry i couldn't help myself đ)
Based on this picture I found in pinterest + also [kinda] based on traitor by olivia rodrigo and omg i really recommend u guys listen to this edit because it reminds me so much of this fic that's been stuck in my head for MONTHS also kind of a run away with me prologue lol

Your POV
I nervously made my way across the forest until I reached a limestone cliff. I knocked on the iron door, not really expecting to get an answer.
My boyfriend has been shutting himself in Bunker 9 for the past few weeks. I stood there counting up to seven before knocking again. I knocked again two more times, until he answered in the middle of my last knock.
He removed his goggles and winced as sunlight hit his eyes. He'd grown thinner and paler, making the dark circles in his eyes more pronounced.
"Oh, Leo..." I reached out to brush a few strands of hair away from his face, but he moved away.
"What are you doing here?" He said in a monotone voice.
I moved to walk inside the Bunker, brushing off his hesitation to let me in. "I'm your partner, remember? And I'm really concerned because you're shutting yourself out lately. You know everyone's starting to worry about you. Percy asked me to check on you because you missed pegasus riding with him. Oh, and I'm pretty sure Jason's coming back from Camp Jupiter soon. I was hoping you and Annabeth could be with Piper while Percy and I hung out with Jason because it's been a little awkward since their breakup. Plus Piper wanted to tell you somethingâ"
"Please," he said forcefully causing me to stop and look at him. "Just... Get out."
Normally, he'd shut himself from the world for a few days to work on an important project or because he was feeling really sad and he needed space. But this was getting out of hand. He had never locked me out of his life when I offered to help him. He was never this mean when he asked for space. I was not having this attitude of his.
"Okay, Leo. I tried to play nice. What is so important that you blow off all your friends for nearly a month that you can't even tell your partner, or maybe say hi to your best friend who's coming back from the other side of the country?"
He didn't say anything. He pursed his lips and avoided eye contact. I scanned he room for any signs.
It was messier than usual with all the crumpled paper scattered on the floor, especially on his desk. He could have been drawing up new plans. Something in my gut told me that something wasn't right. There were no new unfinished projects, indicating that he wasn't starting a new invention. Harley's helicopter lay on his bench in the same state it was weeks ago. Huh, not even his siblings could enter the Bunker.
I turned and Leo was already changing Festus' oil. I took this moment of distraction to pick up a few pieces of crumpled paper on the floor and on his desk. I had to process the words a bit longerâtoo long that Leo took notice. Damn dyslexia.
I heard footsteps speed up behind me, but it was too late. I read enough and got the gist of what he had been trying to do these past few weeks.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" He yelled at me. Small embers started to erupt between his curls.
I laughed dryly. "So this is what you've been up to?"
His fists tightened, further crumpling the paper in his hands. His eyes flashed with anger, despair and confusion.
I sighed and focused my eyes on his desk, not daring to look at him any longer. Under some pieces of paper were old photographs of him and Piper from Wilderness School. Yup, those definitely were the mist memories she had with Jason. I read the latest draft he'd been writing:
Dear Piper,
Remember the mist memories from boarding school with Jason? They were real, but they were with me.
I miss you. I miss when it was just us. I miss the night on the roof.
Yours truly,
Leo Valdez
I tried to keep my voice from cracking. "How long?"
I heard him sigh. "Three weeks."
I balled my fists. Tears started to fall and smudge the ink. I wiped them away as fast as they came.
"How?"
"In a dream," his tone softened now. "Hera came to me in a dream and told me to check an old drawer in Bunker 9. I found the photos and the memories came rushing back."
"How long were you dating back then?"
"Two weeks."
"Were you ever going to tell me?"
Silence; then a deep breath.
"No."
I shook my head in disbelief. "Why?"
"Because I knew you'd get upset likeâ"
"I meant why would you throw away months of our relationship for a couple of weeks of your relationship with her? And without even bothering to tell me? Gods damn it, Leo. We've been together since you've first arrived at camp. And what about those promises you made when we were sailing to Greece? You've been keeping these feelings away from me and you've been lying to me, making me believe that there's still something between us andâ"
"Oh, calm down," he said with an annoyed expression and tone, which only infuriated me more, "it's not like I did anything were her yet! I didn't kiss her or tell her how I truly felt for her! She just got out of a relationship with Jason around the same time I had that dream. I had to figure out how to talk to her about it. I've been alone in this Bunker for three. Fucking. Weeks. I didn't cheat on you."
"Oh, and that makes everything better?" I countered. "Being in a relationship isn't about not cheating, Leo. It's about being honest and communicating with each other."
"Oh, like you've been communicating with me? After the war, you take go back to Manhattan for school, and you take a job. I haven't seen you much during the holidays because work has been keeping you in the city. And you won't tell me what you even do for a living!"
I took in a deep breath. "I told you I needed to have a life outside of camp! I needed to know first that I could handle myself in the mortal world as a normal human being. I needed this demigod part of my life to be separate as much as possible! I've been in two wars, Leo. I needed time to myself, too. And I was about to tell you guys in a few more days. But I guess now, I'm glad I've kept you out of that part of my life. At least I have an escape from all of this. And now, especially from you."
I took another deep breath and walked to the door, about to let myself out. I turned back again, both our tear-stained eyes meeting each other.
"If it makes you feel any better," I said softly, "I would've hated the idea of us breaking up. But if you really love her, if you really feel like you have this special connection to her and she makes you happy, then I won't get in your way. You could at least have had the decency to talk to me so we could have left on a good note."
He looked at me with wide eyes, clearly regretting his actions. I sighed and looked around the Bunker, possibly for the last time. Lots of memories were definitely created in this room; all just as grand and meaningful as the inventions they made here. But just like some of Hephaestus' contraptions, some of them were flawed and dumped in his scrapyard, no matter how much potential it could have had.
"Goodbye, Leo."
I sat on a rock on the beach that gave me a beautiful view of Long Island Sound. To my left, the sun started to set, casting an orange filter on everything. My heart broke, remembering how everything glowed orange in the Bunker. Leo always left the fires burning when he was working. The sunlight twinkling against the sea reminded me of how small bits of flame peaked through his hair earlier. I remembered how mad he was at me. Or maybe he was mostly mad at himself.
"Hey."
I jumped when someone satâor rather, landedâbeside me. I turned and smiled, seeing one of my good friends back at camp.
"Hey, you're back," I said weakly. "How long have you been here?"
He smiled at me, although he could maybe sense that something was wrong. "Half an hour, maybe? I saw Annabeth making plans to expand camp to have a city. She made me do an aerial inspection and I told her I'll get back to her tonight. That's when I saw you."
"Mhmm," I mumbled, not really knowing what to say. It was silent for a few minutes before I spoke up again, knowing he was just waiting for me to open up.
"I broke up with Leo."
His head quickly turned to me. I guess he wasn't expecting it to be that bad. "What?"
"Oh yeah," I laughed dryly. "Turns out the mist memories Piper had in Wilderness School with you? They were real. But not with you."
His eyes widened. "Oh... With Leo."
"He locked himself in the Bunker for weeks trying to write a letter. It was heartbreaking. Like, truly heartbreaking. He wanted to tell her how much he missed her and how much he missed them. Then he said how much he missed that night with her under the stars and... It hurt. Like hell."
"Oh," he said. "I guess Piper didn't tell me everything then."
"She knew all along?"
He shook his head. "Maybe not everything, but she told me she's been confused about her feelings lately and she'd been having visions or dreams of possible old memories that were messing with her head."
"I'm sorry about you and Piper," I said.
"Don't be," he said. "I understand her. It did hurt, though. But I think I can get over it some day. We're still awkward around each other, but at least we left on a good note."
I scoffed. "Leo couldn't even give me a good ending to our relationship."
"Hey," he said as he put a hand on my shoulder. "You're a great person, y/n. You've done so much, especially for him. It's his loss that he was stupid enough to let go of you."
"I know that."
"Do you really?"
"I do!" I said. "I'm a great person and I know that. But that doesn't mean what he did doesn't hurt me."
"I know," he said. "You'll find someone who'll treat you like the queen that you are. You're a great person, and I'm not just saying this to cheer you up. I truly think you're amazing."
I smiled at him. "Thanks, Jason. And you'll find someone great, too. Maybe not as great as me but, then again, who is?"
We both let out a laugh. The conch sounded in the distance, signaling dinner. I moved to stand up before hearing Jason speak up again.
"Hey, do you maybe want to just grab a couple of plates and eat out here?"
I smiled. "Yeah. That sounds good. I don't really want everyone else hounding me about the breakup right now."
I don't know how long it was going to take me to get over Leo. We really did gave something special. It was cruel how the universe gave me something so good, to make me have hope that something was finally going right, then have it yanked away from my arms just as suddenly as it came.
He never cheated on me, but that didn't mean he didn't betray every promise we made to each other. I should have known it was too good to be true. Life has always played cruel jokes on me.
Then again, who's to say that things won't turn out for the better, right?

Dark-Seven part three - Jason
I apologize @reading0mens for the longtime it took me but I love Jiper angst sooo it got a bit long XD, feedback would be cool :)
- The day Gea was destroyed marked the end of the giant war
- But for Jason, it was the most horrible day of his life
- He wakes up in the infirmary without Leo and Piper
- They are dead Chiron tells him
- Leo gave his life to kill Gea and the eagles could not catch Piper on time
- Jason refuses to believe it until he runs out and sees her
- Her bloodied corpse, her lifeless eyes they will hunt him until the end of his life
- He wanted to grow old with her
-As he gently rocks her in his arms he tries to understand
- Why would Hera let her die after she screwed so much with her life already?
- Why would she let Leo sacrifice himself in such a violent way?
- He knows the truth deep in his heart
-As he watches Piperâs body burn among the others he learns what real hate feels like
-It scares him
- He was supposed to be Heraâs champion, a loyal soldier to the gods
- His pain gets worse when he is alone
- Percy and Annabeth leave Camp for school
- Hazel and Frank go back to Camp Jupiter
- He spends his time alone in his cabin living in the vision he saw when the gods came to help them
- Piper is alive whispering soft words to him that everything is going to be okay
- That he is a person instead of Heraâs shallow Champion
- They even help him to continue his designs for the minor gods temples
- But soon his love for her turns to desire
- He knows that she is not really with him and who is responsible for it
- He does not want to sit around anymore doing exactly what Hera would want him to do
-âIâŚ..I canât do this anymore Pipes.â, He tells her one night his body trembling in despair
-âYes you can Jason! You are a hero that always stepped up to do whatâs needed.â She says her words piercing into Jasonâs heart like her dagger
-To him, they feel like an accusation
- All of the sorrow and anger boils up in him
- He does not notice the wind around him growing stronger, or the thunder from outside
- He is tired of Hera, tired of being too perfect
- The papers are thrown across the room and he stands his body shaking with rage
- A yell of defiance leaves him and the storm sends lighting to hit the Cabin
- The Campers find Jason sitting still in smouldering remains
-His eyes are closed tears running down his cheeks but there is a smile on his face
- Invisible chains put on by Hera have just been broken
- Jason never felt more alive
-âIâm done being their servant Chiron and you should be too.â, that is Jasonâs goodbye, a reminder that the centaur should be a protector not a trainer of child soldiers
- No one follows him when he leaves not even Nico
-They all saw the cold bitterness in Jason once-loyal blue eyes, they all feel his calm aura like wolve ready to strike everyone that comes to close
- Jason is glad for their fear
- He does not want anyone innocent getting hurt in his crazy plan
- Jason fly away but still stays close to the sea
- The papers of the minor gods are destroyed but he can still remember all of their names
- Kymopolaia is the first one he calls on the beach of Montauk
- She emerges from the water in all her glory and Jason canât suppress his joy
-He acts like Jason grace always did
- Flattering, his compliments even making the violent storm goddess blush
- Only when she wonders why he is here that he shows her a few of his true emotions
- He talks about how Hera forced his mom to give him to the wolves
- He tells her about all the friends that he lost to Heraâs obsession with tormenting him, how much Piper and Leo gave him hope for a home, how the queen of the gods let them die
-When he is finished high waves are fluting the beach while Kymopolaia cries in pity for the young hero
- Jasonâs apology enrages her even more
-âThe twelve Olympians will never respect or honour anyone who is not useful to them.No matter how many temples I build for them you are just a goddess of lower rank just like I was just their servant. I would just waste my time trying to fix their mistakes and in the end, neither of us would get what they want.â, He says true regret in his voice
-Poseidon's daughter grits her teeth while high waves flute the beach as her body is shaking
- Jason confirmed what she has been dreading since the war ended and her father made up excuses to exclude her from his royal court
-He comforts her and he can tell how he stirs up her hate for Posidon
- Jason can barely hide his satisfaction, his plan is working just like hoped it would
- He advises her to turn the sea against her father, itâs her birthright after all
- Kymaploaiaâs eyes fill with a mad gleam, a whirlpool around her shows agreement
- She is not afraid to take on the sea, hundreds of tormented river gods will stand behind her angry because they had been forbidden to kill the humans that hurt them every day
-After Jason wished her good luck she leaves and he lets out a laugh of satisfaction
-Words can be more powerful than lightning he learned that from Piper
- A part of him still despises what he has become but he tells himself that Hera turned him into this
- She created a weapon and now she has to deal with the consequences
- He continues to travel all over the country flying over it with his storm horse, never staying at one place for long as he is sure the eyes of Hera are on him
- Every stop brings a talk to another minor god
-Hypnos and Morpheus are easy to convince
-Every mortal needs to sleep and dream so why are they never invited to mount Olympus throne room?
- Jason orders them to rebel against the Olympians in the cities of the demigod Camps first
-It is the only way to ensure that his friends will stay out of his way
- Aelous is harder
- The mad lord of the winds always hated demigods and he is not pleased when Jason holds the dozens Venti he sends to kill him still in the air with one move of his hand
-Jason uses no charm on him but instead reminders of all the times Zeus forced him to deal with storm spirits all by himself
-The idea that he can banish the storm spirits once and for all after Zeus is gone finally convinces him
-But Jason still wants the god to know that he is the leader of this rebellion who should not be messed with
- So he concentrates and moves his hands to control the storm spirits again
- He can feel their anger through the winds but he still manages to force them to turn into wolves their lightning eyes blazing with hatred
-âYou will serve me from now on.â, He orders them through his mind his voice sounding like thunder in their heads and they indeed bow their heads before him
-Aelous only laughs at this sight
-âYou have changed Jason Grace! If you are ready to rebel against your father just because of the Aphrodite girl and that son of Hephaistus then you are just as crazy as me.â The lord of the winds jokes when Jason is about to leave with his new wolves
-âIâm just ready to do anything for the people I love.â, Jason replies coldly
-From Olympus Hera hears those words too
- They seem a weak excuse for all the chaos Jason has caused
-The sea has been stormy for days swallowing ships and fluting beaches while the cities are fluted by rivers
- Zeus is barely able to control his winds and so the weather jumps from hot to cold in minutes
The gods own children are sleeping alongside hundreds of mortals unable to help their parents
- Hera knows that Jason will make things even worse if he is not stopped now
- But her love for him or rather the love for his loyalty to her is what makes her believe that she can bring him back
- Not herself she is not that naive
- Only one person can and even though she is gone Hera has figured a way to use her against Jason
-If only she could see the cruelty of her tricks
- Jason begins to hear Piperâs voice again in his dreams
- She is not soft with him anymore
- Instead, she tells him how terrible he has become, that he acts like a pathetic child just because he failed to save her
-He yells that he is doing all this to get justice for and Leo but that only makes her laugh so loud that he has to cover his ears to drown it out
- Sometimes he also hears Leo mocking him, saying that he canât believe he ever looked up to him
- Jason wakes from those nightmares in sweat and tears until he decides that sleep is overrated
- He feels more comfortable moving around with his wolves anyway, it reminds him of old times, his childhood
- Unfortunately, his sleep deprivation changes his methods to gain more allies
- The nature spirits (Nymphs and dryads), arenât met with his charm but instead little patience and quick anger
- To Jason they are dumb, Zeus hit on them for centuries why are they so unwilling to turn against him?
-He tries to stay calm but their talks about how his plan is insane to remind him of Piper and the things she said in his dreams
- Not only once does he command his venti to burn whatever three or plant annoys him too much, the wolves happily oblige and tore the spirits apart with their electricity sparking teeth
- More and more Jason Grace begins to remind them of Zeus, unforgiving, cruel to anyone that does not obey his wishes
-When a young dryad girl dares to say that to Jason out loud he snaps
-A huge thunderstorm is summoned, lightning blasting the girl loved ones
-The forest burns in bright orange flames and Jason uses the winds to direct them towards the girls three
- She dies screaming in the flames while storm wolves bite at her to electrocute
- Jason grins at her Beggs as he looks directly into her beautiful dark eyes, Hera has those too
- Nature decides to join him out of fear
- The gods will be mad but it is the only way to avoid Jasonâs rage
-Jason feels powerful riding past them on his horse while they bow
-He can feel the wind gods around him ice cold, hot like fire
-On mount Otrys he calls for Hecate as the next step for his plan
- When she ignores his call he does not care
- Electricity runs through his veins power, it does not matter if he has to wait a bit until Olympus falls
- Suddenly a voice calls him making his blood turn cold
-He turns his head to look behind him and as expected no one is there
-He tells his rising panic that it was not real, he just hasnât slept for four days
- The temperature drops, darkness crawls over the hilltop, he feels watched
-âIâm here Jason itâs okay.â, Her voice is sweet close and yet it makes him shiver in fearÂ
- It canât be her
- Jason draws his sword and gets on his horse, the wolves growl restlessly as they can feel their master distress
-âWho are you? Show yourself!â, He demands despite his shaking voice
- Her laughter is loud wild like the summers breeze, he has heard it a thousand times before
-His eyes fly around frantically there is only the shadows of the rising night
-âIâm your girlfriend Jason! Did you already forget that?â, the girl that canât be her asks amused
- A person stands in front of him out of nowhere
-Jasonâs sword falls to the ground, his eyes fill with tears
-Her clothes are nothing she would wear and yet he would recognize her blind
-Piper McLean, the love of his life stands there in a white long dress, her dark brown hair falls loose around her shoulders, her eyes of lighter brown are reaching into his soul
-âNoâŚ...this is a trick! YouâŚâŚ.you are dead.â, Saying it hurt but it was the truth
- His venti flicker with lighting in agreement
-âIâŚâŚ..donât know why they let out but does that matter?!, Iâm here andâŚ.I missed you.â, Piper sobs, her despair finally washes away his doubts with guilt
-He slides off his horse ignoring the suspicious neighing
-Jason goes to her slowly putting his hand on her cheek, she feels real
-âI missed you too Pipes.â, He croaks and then breaks down pulling her against his chest all pain of losing her, the hatred against Hera, the things he did to convince gods and spirits to rise against their rulers, even the nightmares in which she hated him, spilling out of him
-He is scared of her backing away when he is finished, of her making his horrible dreams come true
-Instead, she looks flattered and sad as she puts a hand on his chin
-âPerhaps that is why they allowed me to leave the underworld.â, She says so softly and Jason is caught in confusion and overwhelming relief that she does not hate him
-âWhat do you mean?â, Jason asks suddenly feeling worried, the gods would never allow someone to cheat death especially someone close to him
-âI think the gods want me to save you from yourself.â, Piper answers with concern,
-Jason looks at her stunned then as he processes her words anger rises in him
.-Yes it does sound like Hera to use Piper that way
-âNo Pipes I never felt better ! They are just scared because I make their system fall apart.â, He responds not able to hide his pride,
- He is happy that she worries for him but he wants her to know that he is okay that they are okay
-He wants to squeeze her hand as recurrence but Piper steps back with guilt in her eyes
â JasonâŚâŚ.you havenât slept for days and all those burnt nature spirits? This isnât you.â, She says her words soft but they are too much like his dreams
-âYea I have been a bit crazy lately but only because I want to make them stop Pipes. All those mistakes or wars of the gods that we have to die and fight for. Losing Leo and you was something I donât want any other demigod to go through. I want us to live in peace and that is only possible if we arenât controlled by an egoistic good and his controlling queen.â, He explains and despite his fear, he means every word
- He just wants Piper to understand so that she will fight at his side again
-The image brings a smile to his face
-The two of them standing in front of a chained up Hera in all their glory
-Piper brings him back with a sigh and the deep pity in her eyes fills him with despair
-Why is she so against opposing the gods, Wasnât she the one that cursed Hera and despised how the goddess put herself in charge of his life?
-A dread rises in the back of him, he suppresses it quickly
-âOur lives arenât controlled by the gods Jason. The fates are the ones that decide what challenges a hero has to face. You are wasting your time and ruining your own life fighting for something that will never change. Call off the rebellion Jason and tell the gods to be actual parents. Tell them to protect their children from their destines as long as possible and then go home to rest. That would be easier than a war you canât win.â, Piper finally says
-Despite all of his anger Jason has to admit that her advice is tempting
- The vision of him growing old with Piper could come true plus he truly is not strong enough to fight fate itself so why not ask the gods for a favour? Maybe he can convince them to change after all he is the favourite of their rulers
-But then a thought washes away that option and he figures a way to tell Piper why the Olympian council needs to be reformed
- When Piper takes his hand again he looks at her with determination
âI canât. Hera loves using demigods too much. Look what happened to Leo. She claimed that she wanted to prepare him for his future just to let his mom die and let him sacrifice himself. You once said that heroes have to step up and do what is right and that is what Iâm doing right now.â, He explains
-For a short moment he thinks guilt washes over Pipers face
- Suddenly he realizes how strange her pleading was
-Piper always was someone to take action, she would never tell him to just do nothing and the way she almost took all fault from the godsâŚâŚ..
-âHera only did that because she knew what Leoâs role in the war was gonna be. She may not be the best but she is not our enemy Jason. She cared for Leo and she cares about you too.â, Piper says and now Jason is sure
- He rips his hand away from her his eyes burning with rage
-âPiper would never defend Hera ! Who are you?â, He asks coldly anger numbing the shattering of his heart
-The girl looks at him in confusion, he hates that she does it through Pipers eyes
â Jason -â
-â Donât! Stop using her voice and show yourself! I want to know which god I have the honour to kill!â, Jason spats
- At this moment he forgets all of his good morals, only blind hatred is left
-The Venti come to his aid, they swirl around him like a mini hurricane and he can feel their power pulsing through him, waiting for his command
-âIâm just trying to help you Jason even if you could kill me that would not solve anything.âShe warns but it is still Piper's voice and he will make her pay for it.
-âOh no I think this will make me feel a lot better and if Hera send you just know that what happens to know is her fault, not mine.â, Jason says with a cruel smile before turning his storms to pure lightning
- with a hand wave the spirits turn into pure lightning crashing into where she stood
-Flames light up the hill but she is not there anymore
-A huge dove is in her place attacking immediately scratching at his face
-Dark clouds gather thunder is booming, rain falls,
-the Windlords themselves lift Jason into the air pushing his attacker away
- He does not need his sword
- The sky is his weapon
-Jason chases the goddess, calls cold wind to let hail fall onto her instead of rain
- Lightning strikes and he catches it in his bare hands, it flickers over his entire body until it gets thrown towards his victim
-Despite all of this the dove keeps trying to get closer, her voice pleading for him to stop his madness
- A hysterical laugh is his answer, he remembers a time where the gods loved him for his kindness, the same one that forced him to keep Heras chains on him for too long
- This goddess is treating him like he is still a pawn but that will end now
- Jason spins himself around his arms outstretched
- Wind blows around him, the dove shrieks in panic
- A tornado is throwing her around in circles like a puppet
- She changes form to other animals, attempts to escape through the cloud storms walls
- That is when they become pure lightning
- it hits her makes her body twist unnaturally
- She falls and Jason is still in the storms eye, He feels like a god bathed in his fathers lightning bolts
- The goddess unmoving body beneath him looks so tiny almost fragile even when she has changed to her Olympian form
- He would have pitied her if he hadnât recognized her, now he only feels disgusted
- Another shockwave is sent through her body before Jason dissolves his tornado
- The wind gods hesitate for a moment not liking what Jason might have in mind
- Jason is stronger and so they follow him down towards his victim as only a soft breeze
-âWhy?â, He spats down at her as she wakes up
- His short question holds her crime all the pain and false hope she put him through
- She gets on her knees to look up at him her ever-changing hair clothes and eyes even her skin that is healing her burns are no beauty to him anymore
-âHera and I only wanted to help you Jason.â, Aphrodite apologizes maybe there are real tears in her eyes
-â I need help? Iâm not the one impersonating my dead daughter to manipulate her boyfriend!â, He spats finding her trick even more disgusting as he puts it into words
- He thinks about how she held him, what would have happened if he did not find out who she was
- He feels dirty
âI always take on the form of loved ones that's why Hera send me. She knew that Piper was the only one to get you out of your grief. Love is the only thing more powerful than hateâ, Aphrodite explains and with every word, she looks more and more like Piper again
- Jason realizes that she is just as bad as Hera, another god that messed with his mind
- He sees how heavy she is breathing, it is time to punish her
-âWell then let me tell you something about love.â, Jason says making a pulling motion with his hands reaching for her breath
- He bends the oxygen out of her, the goddess head being forced forward
-The winds grow stronger again, he hears their whispers to not do this, he is deaf to their pleads
-âN â No!â, She protests in horror, her body glows attempting to release her true form but his attack surprised her and is now making her too weak
-Jason continues an air bubble forming around her head
-She digs her nails into her throat until they are bloody, her eyes nearly pop out of her skull and her face is an ill shade of blue
- the chocking noises she makes are music for him
-Jason enjoys every second
-Her looking like Piper does not save her
- It only reminds him more of the future he has lost and that makes him more furious
-When her sounds and body become still and her face is one mask of fear he finally tells her
-âLove never lasts long in this world.â
-No air gets added to the bubble, it dissolves
- An Aphrodite goddess of Love and beauty falls dead to the ground killed by her daughter's lover
- Jason feels empty
- He just killed a goddess he should feel ecstatic
- But instead, he feels as if something broke inside him
-Jason stares at the sky waiting for a reaction
-â Come on Hera! This is what you wanted me to become right? A murderer your weapon. Just come to me and admit it !â, Jason yells tears streaming down his cheeks
-He falls to the ground as the thing he did crashes down on him
-He killed for revenge just like Zeus, Hera and all other gods did for centuries
-How is he better than them now?
-His allies seem to think the same thing
-Jason canât summon his venti in the morning
- The winds are harder to bend under his will
- Nature hides from him it does not matter how much he burns no one shows up
- Sometimes he hears the spirits weeping but he knows it is not meant for him
- Jason gets more and more desperate
- As of last hope he goes to San Fransisco
- The first step he takes into the city shows him that itâs full of life again
-He plays with the thought of going back to Camp Jupiter
- But he does not want his friends to see what he has become
- On Ocean Beach, he yells for Kym
-Jason tells himself that she can help him turn his fate around
-âIâm sorry Jason but I donât talk to traitors.â, She whispers from under the sea
-Jason feels like a wolve being cornered
-â I never betrayed you the gods did !â He shouts his voice sounding childish in his ears
-âYou promised to fight in my name and then went on a crazy rampage just to make Hera feel bad. I expected better from you Jason.â, Kym told him in a stern almost motherly tone
- The words are a punch to his gut, a mirror showing him the truth
-His plan was supposed to be a peaceful change of the god's council, yes he knew about the damage the minor gods would cause but that was just to get the higher gods attention
-He sees the dryad girl in the flames, aphrodite chocking as air is pulled out of her
-This rebellion started with a wish for justice for Leo and Piper, for all those treated badly by the gods
- His lust for revenge destroyed all that
-Regretful he walks into the sea the water going up to his knees
-â Iâm sorry.â, Jason says honestly
-That is when they finally react
- The waves grow bigger a man with a trident emerging out of them, Nature spirits come out of their plants with pinecones and daggers for weapons the blond-haired woman with her crown of corn is their true goddess
- The mist rising around him lets him hear his victim screams once more
-âJason Grace we are here to punish you for crimes against us and the entire western civilization. Surrender now or seal your fate.âAll of the Command in Unison
-He thinks of giving himself up
-He was raised as a Roman, he learned when a soldier has no chance to win
- Yet the thought of kneeling and letting Hera win so easily makes him sick
- And so he refuses
- The fight does not take long
- Jason summons lightning to blast away Nyads that grasped his ankles
-He runs out of the sea directing lightning at the advancing Dryad warriors
-They burn but the flames seem to have gathered they're own concise
-Orange and high they rage towards him growing on sand which was not possible
-They burn Jasonâs arm as he attempts to fly over them
-Screaming in pain he struggles to stay in the air
-Demeter uses her giant staff to let the three roots attack him like huge arms
-Her followers throw weapons at histones that for some reason always hit no matter how much he uses wind to push them away
-Rain comes and turns into a huge rain shower blinding his view
-He is forced to fly backwards and that is when Poseidon's trident impales his gut
-Blood spills pain forbids him to breath
-His vision goes black before he falls in the threes arms
-Jason wakes in ironically on chains in front of Hera and Zeus
-"I hope you know what a disappointment you are to me.", Zeus says but Jason's eyes are fixed on Hera
-She looks at him with a deep sorrow he did not expect so he chooses the last beg
-" Whoever you choose as your next heroes Hera please don't control them. Remember me as a warning of what happens if you do.", He pleads
-He is scared of his punishment but if Hera realizes her mistakes then maybe all of this was worth it
-Hera only replies with a small nod
-Then he is dragged off to the underworld by Hades off to the cliffs that lead into Tartarus
Jason panics as he realizes
He thought that he would end up in the fields of punishment
-But of course, Zeus hates when his children ruin his good name
-He struggles against his bonds begs his uncle to at least let him see his friends one more time
Luckily Hades is one of the kinder godsÂ
-He summons Piper's ghost, he does not say why Leo is not there
-She smiles at him sadly and maybe with anger which Jason does not blame her for
-Her kiss on his forehead brings tears to his eyes
-"Goodbye Jason. I'm sorry I caused you so much trouble.", She whispers and he shakes his head
-"Don't be. All of this is Heras fault and mine.", He tells her and with that, she is gone again
-He thinks of her and Leo while he falls
-Hera mourns him for days
-She watches the rest of the seven holding his funeral at Camp Jupiter
-They understand his motives and that's why they still love him as the friend he was
-Hera understands him too
-She was not liked in the past few centuries and that was why the idea of her very own hero made her blind for letting him be a child
-Now that was what killed him and Zeus was already off making another hero that he can be more proud of
-A child he warned her to not even look at
-The other demigods resent her even more
-Frank Zhang would be her other hero but Hazel Levesque would never let her near him
-She thinks about Jasons last words, his beg that she shouldn't mess with children's lives
-It's when Leo Valdez returns and learns of his friend's fate that she promises herself to remember
-The hatred in his eyes is enough to bring even a goddess to her sensesÂ

AU where Nico dies (don't hate me pls I'm sorry I love Nico and ship the hell out of Solangelo, this is just to allow for some dark AUs) transporting the Athena Parthenos in BoO.
(Sorry it's such a long post) Reyna Avila RamĂrez-Arellano, revered praetor and peace-loving daughter of Bellona, loses the ability to share strength. Now, when she uses her power, she saps your energy, draws on your bravery, and poisons your mind with horrific images. Nico's death has allowed suppressed traits to resurface and overwhelm all her progress since San Juan all those years ago. She picks fights. She becomes a dictator in all but name, abolishing the Senate and making War Games a lot more "realistic": weekly funerals become commonplace, words are spoken under breaths, and terror resides in the heart of every New Roman. And so, Reyna RamĂrez-Arellano turns her brilliant mind and poisonous power to Gaea's aid. Gleeson Hedge doesn't seem more than a broken satyr at first glance, his smiles never sincere, his voice never loud, his bat never raised. But when he slips off into the wilderness, he does not sit quietly among the trees and reflect. He whispers into the trees' leaves, his twisted words echoing the bitterness that now consumes his being. He has been tricked too many times: Pan, forcing thousands of satyrs to lose their lives in their quest to find him when he was alive all along; Clarisse, who never tried to connect with nature or understand his own ties to the natural world, who teaches his child the game of death while Mellie watches, fading away, unable to fight back; the gods, who, in their promise of protection, conveniently ignored the nature spirits. He is bitterest about Nico's death: about all he could have done, about what the kid should have done. The glint in his eyes scares even the worst monster that Tartarus could send. But it is Gaea he turns his allegiance to. It is Gaea who promises that he will always be good enough for her. And so, Gleeson Hedge turns nature back to its true mother: Gaea. Hazel Levesque is not someone you want as an enemy. Her golden eyes, gold like the masks of the judges of the dead, seem to see everything. Her powers grow stronger, but now she is able to control them. One glance, and she can cause an entire legion to scream and writhe in agony as she manipulates the iron in their blood, twists their shining armour, forces weapons to turn on their handlers. She stops wearing normal, mortal clothes, and now she wears flowing dresses of molten gold and bronze that no spear could pierce nor hand touch. She calls on the remnants of metal in the cave in Resurrection Bay to rise, and rise they do, twisting and weaving together at her command to form a cathedral-like vault with a solid Stygian iron throne. At the front of her temple lies a chasm from which her first creation arises, complete and healed, at last. Alcyoneus clambers out of the pit, back with his mother's life and Hazel's burning desire for destruction. And so, after seventy years, Hazel Levesque joins forces with Gaea of her own free will. Frank Zhang's arrows are no longer aimed at Tartarus's monsters, but at the people he once considered friends. The ruins of the Zhang family mansion become a shrine to Gaea, the ancient walls falling in blissful happiness into the Earth Mother's embrace. Frank returns often with fresh skulls, unfailingly whole - his arrow pierces cleanly through the eye every time. His piece of firewood safe in Gaea's belly, protected where no flame could reach, he is unstoppable. His shapeshifting causes unforseen problems with the allies' plans, it's very hard to plan how to fight a lion when he could turn into a swarm of bees at any moment. He is the ultimate spy, a literal fly on the wall, and for once, he feels needed. He feels worth something. He feels as though he is good enough, something the gods could never give. All the gods ever did for Frank, he realises bitterly, is take. His mother. His grandmother. His self-confidence. His chance for a stable, loving family. Nico. And so, Frank Zhang finds a different kind of family, one that will not let him down, in Gaea. Piper McLean never wanted to be a tragic love story; that was purely for her mother's entertainment. She
cuts her hair short. She kills Gaea's enemies on sight. Her charmspeak forces even her old family, Camp Half-Blood, to turn against each other, brother against brother, sister against sister, until bodies litter the strawberry fields and the Big House crumbles to smouldering ashes. The gods have her no love. Their boundaries mean nothing to her any more. Her love extends to her favourite mother, her boyfriend, the rest of the Seven, Grover, Reyna and Hedge. Beyond that, it is poison. Gaea takes her hands, looks into her eyes, and tells Piper that she is more than the spawn of an unfaithful, air-headed immortal, more than the damsel in distress. She tells Piper that she is who she decides to be. And Piper agrees. Gaea gives her the opportunity to be out of others' shadows. Piper McLean takes the chance and joins with Gaea, her charmspeak almost her most dangerous feature, second only to her unbridled wrath when Nico's death is mentioned.
Jason Grace owes fealty to only one eternal goddess now. He scours the Underworld with Hazel and Frank, relentless like the wolves he was brought up with. He knows no bounds, his destruction barely controllable by even Piper and her charmspeak. He has obliterated entire cities, counties, even an entire nation. He feels no regret, no remorse, no nagging guilt. He seeks out and electrocutes homophobes as his powers grow in complexity, along with his ability to control them. No matter how much they scream, the same two words shoot from Jason's scarred lips like the lightning bolts he commands: for Nico. As the darkness inside him grows, the son of Jupiter advances on Olympus, eyes and hands blazing, to destroy his father, as one of Gaea's allies, as one of Gaea's found children. Jason Grace vows by Nico's soul and Gaea's love to destroy the gods who shamelessly abandoned them.
Percy Jackson has been close to the darkness before. As just one examole, he's controlled poison to choke the goddess of misery at the edge of Chaos. But now, Annabeth's words at the time - some things aren't meant to be controlled - strike differently. Percy doesn't follow rules any more. That brooding, troublemaking face now alludes to his new form: gone is the class clown, here is something more akin to a devil. Like Hazel, he has made hundreds of people and monsters shriek in pain as he controls their blood, contorting their bodies into unnatural forms and snapping necks with a mere snap of his fingers. If Nico's death is mentioned around the pair of them - Hazel and Percy - both turn on the individual, eyes smouldering with the deceitfully cool ashes of the fire of grief, and slowly unleash their wrath. Percy cannot be controlled. He wants revenge. Part of him wishes he had never given his mother the head of Medusa to kill Smelly Gabe; it tore him to pieces when he made the fluid in her head seep out of her eyes. But she wouldn't stop begging him to leave Gaea. She had to go. She was no longer loving him as he knew he deserved. Now, Percy Jackson takes his support from the mother he should have accepted long ago: Gaea.
Annabeth Chase did not accept powers from her new mother, her better mother. She chose to use her mind as her weapon and Gaea respected that. Gaea gave her the resources she needed to wreak havoc on mortals and immortals alike. Now, instead of studying for a stupid internship in a misogynistic, capitalist society, Annabeth unleashes her fury, her grief, her mind on the world. The gods deserve to pay for what happened to Nico. The demigods need to feel her grief. The mortals started this stupid cycle of overwork and inadequate pay. Annabeth is ready to work with the mother that respects her, that loves her, that nurtures her as she deserves. And work she does. Plan after plan is developed, improved, redrafted, mocked up, redeveloped, and finally executed with clinical precision. Her mind becomes what her enemies most fear, even above her reputation: first child of Athena in millennia to reach Arachne, retriever of the Athena Parthenos, survivor of Tartarus. And she laughs, laughs in a maniacal way that makes you want to take a step back as she strides towards you, grey eyes alight with an unnatural glint as you realise that she knows everything about you and she knows how this will end. She will not let herself or her friends die. She refuses to let another situation like Nico's death happen again. So, Annabeth Chase takes Gaea's resources and turns them into a mass genocide, executed with her new mother's blessing.
Grover Underwood leads the nature spirits now. He commands dryads to extend their unstoppable tendrils through the paths that Gaea forms for them, deep in the earth, then sending them exploding through the surface and reclaiming all that was torn from them under the pretence of friendship. His empathy link with Percy allows him some degree of control, both over the son of Poseidon and over naiads. Grover is betrayed and bitterly disappointed in Pan, in the gods, in demigods, in mortals, in Nico. And so, he turns nature back home with Gleeson Hedge. The hauntingly beautiful whistling of his pipes lures demigods, mortals, even gods to their doom. Apollo is the first to fall, trapped by the music of the satyr whose horns now make him seem diabolical as he dances in the flames. Grover Underwood finds his roots in Gaea and his revenge in destruction.
Leo Valdez wants to burn the world to ashes. There's not a moment he's not on fire, his hair smouldering, his skin aglow. At his feet lies Hera, trussed up like a rodeo calf, bound by the power of the guardian Leo knows he deserved as a child. There is no Piper with her charmspeak to free the ex-queen; at least, Piper is by Leo's side as he blasts her with his searing flames. There's a smile on Leo's face that rivals even Annabeth's as he torches cities, razes acres and lights up the sky with plumes of smoke and columns of fire. His reasoning feels etched into his heart: the gods let Nico die. The gods let us down one time too many. And so he lets the flames go. Gaea stands behind him, her hand on his shoulder, proud and respectful. She knows that he secretly enjoyed starting the war with New Rome. He has fire powers; it's only natural, and that Octavian is enough to drive anyone mad. So, Leo Valdez finally makes his peace with Gaea.
Will Solace goes out like a light as the news of his beloved's death is announced. He lies, broken and silent, in Gaea's arms, tears streaming down his face. He stirs only for Nico's name, and his eyes turn slowly to whoever dared say it. He reaches out an arm, eyes turning black, leaching all the colour from the surroundings as his whisper echoes: there is no hope. Behind him stands Gaea, a tear of her own on her earthen cheek. She feels his pain, raw and fresh. But she takes some of it onto herself. Will Solace shares his grief with Gaea now.
And so they stand, eyes alight and expressions dark and triumphant, by the side of the goddess who did not want to let Nico die.
Gaea smiles.

Things We Lost in the Fire, ch 38
aka Caleo uni au
Fic summary: Calypso starts studying at a new university, but to her annoyance her new flatmate is a loud mouthed mechanic who also likes to sneak his dog in whenever. But as she learns to know him better, she realizes they might have more in common than what she first thought. Eventually, even the darkest secrets come outâŚ
Chapter summary:Â A new semester is starting
A/N:Â We are finally done with the holiday chapters! When it comes to this chapter, I'd like to state that I only have some experience from a couple of Finnish universities so I really don't know a whole lot about how certain things work in practice in the States, so please ignore the possible inaccuracies for the sake of this fic. It feels weird after a couple of 'bigger' chapters to have a bit more 'fillery' one... but... but... there's Caleo in the beginning?? So I hope you'll enjoy nevertheless. I wish I could spread even more love towards this ship because they deserve it but sadly there are only so few hours in a day. The fandom seems so quiet these days...
Anyway, enough rambling! Now let's get to this chapter, and the usual reminder: I love to hear what you think! All comments are much appreciated :)

âIs something the matter? You look quite unhappy.â
Leo felt arms sneak around his shoulders from behind while he was sitting on the common area sofa, staring at his laptop with a frown. Some of the speakerâs reddish brown hair fell in front of his face, the smell of cinnamon drifting into his nose, and for some reason that alone was enough to relieve some of Leoâs uneasiness. The small, pale hands found their way down his biceps and stopped there, but he wasnât going to complain. If he was honest, he was really happy about Calypsoâs growing confidence when it came to the physical affection, because it told him she really trusted him. Sometimes he was still amazed that he out of all the people had managed to break the ice around her.
Before Leo let himself get too lovestruck, though, he reminded himself why he was staring at his laptop in the first place. The new semester was starting and that naturally meant new courses, new assignments, new texts to read and⌠new emails from his professors. One specific email had managed to twist his stomach quite badly. In it, the professor from his chemistry lab class had asked him for a meeting, and Leo assumed he wanted to discuss what had happened on the exam day. Wishing that he could just ignore that said message, he turned his attention back to his girlfriend.
âJust uni issues⌠nothing more severe this time,â Leo replied half jokingly. The holidays had given him some perspective on what really was important to him and failing a class didnât feel quite as big an issue anymore. It was inconvenient, yes, on a few levels, but not entirely unfixable.
âOh?â Calypso finally let her hands slide off of him and sat down next to him. She seemed a bit relieved that this was about the university and not something that was out of her reach, and if Leo was honest, he couldnât blame her. âWhat kind of issues?â
âA professor wants to meet me face to face tomorrow. Probably to talk about my recent chemistry lab test or something like that.â He shrugged nonchalantly.
âHmm⌠Isnât it quite unusual for them to give special focus to a single student at this stage?â Calypso asked.
âApparently they still do that in my department. Who knows, maybe they think Iâve caused them enough trouble by now and want me to quit.â
âBut what happened in your lab test was not your fault. Do you think you are any closer to being able to finish it in case you get another chance?â
When Calypso was looking at him with those almost chocolate brown eyes, he felt that it wasnât impossible.
âSome smart person once said that I need to believe in myself more, so thatâs what I need to learn to do. After that⌠it might be possible.â
âIâm glad youâre listening to me at least sometimes.â Calypso gave him a lopsided smile. âThe fact that you know what you should do means that youâre already on your way there.â
âYeah. I guess so.â Wanting to talk about something else, Leo asked: âWell, what about you? How are you feeling about the upcoming semester?â
âIâm feeling⌠pretty good about it, you know? Sure, Iâve been reading our course plans and it sounds like our professors are planning to make us work like every day is an exam day and we have some group assignments and important presentations coming up, but⌠I really like learning? And I like listening to the conversations between our professors and my fellow students during our lectures because itâs something I never got to do when I was stuck at home⌠I feel like I get new points of views from them all the time. And Annabeth is a really big help; she knows everything about everything so if I ever feel like I canât follow the lectures, she can always clarify them to me.â
âI have a hard time imagining you not being able to keep up with the professors⌠but yeah, itâs good you can ask for her help if needed.â
Calypso nodded.
âYou know, Iâm glad you two got your issues sorted out in the fall,â Leo added as an afterthought.
Calypso looked up at him with a slight frown as if she had completely forgotten about what exactly had happened in the fall. âOh, right, that. I feel like it was just one big misunderstanding. Both of us realized that we canât get stuck on something that happened so long ago.â
Leo couldnât deny that he had also felt a bit jealous of Percy when he had first found out about his and Calypsoâs past, but she had clearly moved on, so he wasnât holding a grudge anymore either. Calypso had decided to date him, and thatâs what mattered.
âYeah, I know from my personal experiences that ainât worth it,â he replied.
Calypso leaned her head against his shoulder and sighed.
âI have a⌠maybe a bit weird question. Do you believe in some kind of greater power? You know, like gods?â
Leo wondered why she would ask that. âI dunno. Maybe. Iâm not really strongly for or against that. I think Iâm the kind of person who needs to see it to believe it, but I donât think itâs impossible. But why do you ask?â
âThis will sound extremely cheesy but sometimes I wonder⌠if there was a reason why we two met. Like some greater power that pushed us together for some reason.â
âWow. I donât know if any greater powers had their fingers in that but I am glad that it happened.â Leo threw his arm around her shoulder and wondered briefly why it felt like such a natural thing to do. At one point he had been too intimidated to initiate any kind of physical contact but now that they were more open with each other and she had seen him in some of his worse moments â he didnât mind anymore.
âYeah. Me too.â Calypso whispered.
Only the buzzing of the fridge and some other kitchen machinery could be heard on the background while the flatmates were simply enjoying each otherâs company, resting their heads against each other, but eventually Calypso suggested:
âHey... I think I need something that will allow me to disconnect a bit, so⌠how about some Friends?â
Leo didnât have anything against that suggestion. In fact, he always enjoyed the TV show or movie nights with Calypso, for various reasons. âSure. That sounds great to me. You know Iâm always ready to roast my homeboy Chandler.â
âI know you are.â Calypso nudged him and took the remote control to find the right episode. As they started watching and commenting on it (he always enjoyed how snarky Calypsoâs comments could be), Leo almost forgot about the upcoming meeting with the professor.
âŚ
The next day, Leo found himself in the building where the office of his lab professor was located. At the breakfast table he had practiced the meeting with Calypso, and Jason had also joined him a bit later to wish him luck. To Leoâs relief, he did seem a lot happier than when he had seen him before the holiday break, but he still didnât talk a whole lot about his current situation. Leo himself decided that it was better if he didnât guide his friends too much so instead he did a quick recap on the recent developments in his own life â without mentioning his new relationship status. Luckily Jason didnât ask, as he seemed to be more worried about Leoâs upcoming meeting.
As he was waiting for the professor to arrive, Leo kept glancing at his clock nervously. The man was already a few minutes late. While Leo knew that wasnât anything unusual in the university world, as the professors tended to be busy, he still kept wishing he could get the meeting over with as soon as possible. His leg started bouncing again on its own and his fingers were tapping against the wooden handle of the chair. Suddenly he didnât feel quite as sure about what he was going to tell the professor as he had felt earlier.
Finally, he was pulled from his thoughts by a loud âahemâ.
âMr. Valdez? Sorry Iâm late, my meeting with a couple of coworkers got a bit long,â the professor said.
âThatâs⌠thatâs fine,â Leo stuttered. Some months ago he would probably have said something snarky as a response but right now he knew better than to take any risks.
âGo in, go in, so we can have a talk,â the professor encouraged. Unwillingly, Leo followed him into his office and had to be told to sit down before he even realized that there was a comfortable looking arm chair right next to him.
âSoâŚâ the professor started once he was seated behind his desk. âYou probably know why I invited you here.â
âI⌠I do have an ideaâŚâ Leo said hesitantly, looking everywhere in the room except the professor. The man had a lot of engineering related books in his bookshelf, a big stack of papers - probably studentsâ assignments - and a fancy looking calculator on his desk. Behind him on the wall there was a single photograph of his family. Pretty much exactly how Leo had imagined the said professorâs room looking.
âI will be direct with you. Your achievements in the lab classes - or lack thereof - is a cause of confusion for us. In almost all of the theory related classes, you are on the top of the class â despite the occasional reports that your behavior towards the lecturers could use some improvement.â The man raised his eyebrow, but Leo thought he could see a glint of amusement in his eyes. That didnât last long, though. âHowever, until now we have been willing to overlook that because of your talents. Maths, physics, chemistry⌠those things you clearly donât have any issues with. But already for the second year you have been avoiding the lab classes for which you have been signed up and last fall you even left the chemistry lab test before you managed to get it completed. Iâm sure you are aware that if you want to move onto the more advanced classes, you need to complete the mandatory ones before you are allowed to do that.â
âYes, sir, Iâm aware of that,â Leo replied stiffly, wondering briefly when was the last time he had called anyone sir, other than ironically.
âIn that caseâŚâ His voice turned less formal, more fatherly as he continued, which surprised Leo. The professors he was used to dealing with were usually not all too nice to him, although he was willing to admit that some of it was probably deserved. âCan I ask you, is there a specific reason why you havenât attended the lab classes?â
Leo wondered if he should come up with a quick lie. It wouldnât be the first time in his life that he would have to do that in order to protect himself. However, the professor really seemed sincere and concerned about him and in a way his expression reminded him of Joâs when she was expecting him to open up. Perhaps thatâs why he ended up deciding to answer honestly:
âYes. There is.â
âAnd? What is the reason?â The professor raised his eyebrow.
Leo inhaled deeply before forming his response. âIâm afraid of fire. Yeah, laugh ahead, but itâs true. I canât deal with anything that requires heating because of some nasty as hell childhood trauma.â
To his surprise, the professor didnât get angry at him for talking to him in such a manner. Instead, he furrowed his eyebrows.
âAnd youâre still planning to make mechanical engineering your career? Despite your fear?â
Leo nodded slowly. âYeah. Building and fixing inanimate objects is the only thing Iâve ever known how to do. I was basically born with a hammer and a wrench in my hands and I was capable of building toys for myself when I was like four. After an accidentâŚâ He refrained from mentioning his mother because he couldnât guarantee he would be able to stay calm if he brought that up. â⌠I havenât been able to light up a match or anything like that. But almost five years ago, two awesome women adopted me and one of them is a mechanic. She reminded me what I really love about tinkering and it was then that I decided that I wanna keep trying. Itâs a process but I am working on it.â
The professor smiled a little. âYou know⌠a lot of our students were unable to take the chemistry lab course in the fall, so we decided to organize another course now in the spring. As it happens, thereâs still some room for new people in it. So, if youâre interested, youâre welcome. But remember, you would need to attend all the mandatory classes and complete the tasks that you are assigned, no exceptions. That means we will not be going easy on you just because of your fear.â
Leoâs eyes widened with surprise. He hadnât expected to get a chance like that.
âWoah, thanks sir! I wonât let you down!â
âThatâs good to hear,â the professor nodded approvingly. âCan I ask you a question, though? Why do you want to become a mechanical engineer? I mean, what exactly is it that fascinates you about it, other than the influences you have gotten at your home?â
Leo imagined that the professor could probably see the bolts and nuts moving in his brain as he formed his answer. âI⌠I wanna learn to develop products that will help us make the world a safer, more sustainable place for us. We engineers, if anyone, can develop technology that will help us achieve that goal. But thatâs not all. I also wanna learn more so I can help to share the information forward. I wanna show kids who come from similar backgrounds as I that they should keep on dreaming. There was a time when my mom ate porridge - only porridge - for her meals so she could pay the rent when her business was slow, but she still kept doing it. Because thatâs how much she cared about her job. And I want to continue in her footsteps.â
The professor shifted on his seat. âThat is an admirable goal, Mr. Valdez. I hope you will succeed. Remember, you do have the skill â you just need to know how to use it.â
âYeah⌠Thanks professor.â
âNo problem. Donât forget the class enrollments end tonight so you need to be fast if you want to participate. Thatâs all for now. Good luck in your future endeavors.â
âThanks. Iâll go enroll myself then. Bye for now.â
âSee you, Mr. Valdez.â
Leo breathed a long sigh of relief the moment he stepped out of the professorâs office. The meeting had gone way better than he had dared to expect. He hadnât thought he would get another chance so fast, but was grateful for the opportunity. Now, he would only need to kick his fears into the deepest pits of Tartarus, as Calypso would say.

Skate Into My Heart
Chapter Three; Uh oh
BESTIES
I'M ALIVE AND I DID THE WRITING THING
@ciaraloves (or @perseusjackson-jasongrace ig) LOOK AT ME DOING THE THING
As soon as Nico left the locker room, Piper pounced on him. Literally.
He was forced to take a step back and caught her by the shoulders, âWhatâs up?â
She was practically vibrating with excitement, âAnnabethâs back!â
âReally?â
âYeah! Come on!â She grabbed his hand and yanked him through the hallways and into the main rink where a crowd of people had formed next to the bleachers.
It was the rest of the team and in the center was Annabeth, a duffle bag slung over one shoulder, looking exhausted as all hell but she was grinning as the team peppered her with questions and play-by-plays of the practices sheâd missed.
Piper shouldered them into the center so Nico was directly in front of Annabeth, Piper on one side and Calypso on the other.
âHey, Nico,â Annabeth said, still grinning. She stepped forward for a hug and he let her, burying his face into her neck and breathing, already feeling the responsibility leaking from his tight shoulders. Annabeth was like a big sister to him, not that heâd ever admit that, but still.
âYou want to get out?â Nico whispered into her neck.
âYes,â She whispered back emphatically. Nico could barely stop himself from laughing but as they pulled apart he saw the genuine relief in her eyes and felt himself worrying. He needed to talk to her, about the team and skating, about Will and of course, if she needed to talk about why sheâd been gone for so long, heâd do that too.
Apparently, Calypso recognized that too and, bless her heart, muttered something to Leo, and together they captured the teamâs attention, allowing Nico to tug Annabeth away from the crowd and out of the rink. She sighed as soon as they were ejected onto the city streets. Nico stuck an arm out and she smiled and linked their arms.
âWhere are you headed?â Nico asked as they walked the short distance to the car garage.
âOh, probably just my apartment.â
Nico nodded, âI wasnât sure if youâd be staying with your dad or not.â
She shook her head, âHe doesnât even know I landed yet. Iâll head over in the morning.â
Her voice was stiff and Nico took that as his cue to change the subject. âSo I have something to confide in you.â
She perked up almost immediately and he swallowed hard. But she just looked at him with those gray eyes and he reminded himself that this was Annabeth. That she wasnât going to get angry with him.
At least, he hoped not.
âIâm talking to one of the hockey players,â He said casually.
Her grip on his arm stiffened and he braced himself but she was still just looking at him.
Finally, she grinned, âSo when you say âtalking toâ...â
He groaned and felt himself flush, âOh, shut up! Just friends.â
She hummed and released his arm to dig for her keys in her jacket pocket. âIs he nice?â
âNo, heâs a dick,â Nico said sarcastically.
Annabeth rolled her eyes, but she was still smiling. âI donât know why I even bother.â
âHeâs blonde,â Nico offered.
âOooh,â Annabeth drawled.
He rolled his eyes and she burst out laughing, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the parking garage.
âIs he gay?â Annabeth asked.
Nico nearly flinched and passed it off with another eye roll, âI donât know, Annie, thatâs not something thatâs come up in casual conversation.â
She glared at him and Nico, being the mature adult he is, stuck his tongue out at her. She did it back then shook her head. âToo much time with Percy,â She muttered and Nico snorted. She grinned at him.
âSo heâs okay?â
That sobered her immediately. âYeah. Well, as okay as he can be. Iâm only here for like two weeks because he insisted I come back, but Iâm leaving as soon as possible,â She glanced sideways at him, âNot to leave you alone again, though.â
He shrugged off the flash of selfish hurt heâd felt, âIâm good, Beth.â But he wasnât good. Heâd just told her about Will, and not even the start of the way his stomach would twist when he saw a new text from the hockey player and not the same twist when he panicked. And that also meant his chances of performing solo again were climbing. He didnât know how to feel about that part.
âStop that!â She exclaimed, halting once theyâd reached her car.
âGet some sleep, Annabeth,â He said genuinely then smirked a little, âIt looks like you need it.â
She threw a balled-up receipt sheâd found in her bag at him, âDick!â
~~~~
âHey, Nico.â
Nico nearly leaped out of his skin, spinning to see Persephone in the living room.
She snorted, âDidnât mean to scare you, sorry. Did practice go well?â
His phone buzzed in his pocket, âYeah. Annabethâs back.â
Persephone hummed, reaching up to untwist her hair, sending it cascading down her shoulders, âThatâs good. I know youâve missed her,â She said with a knowing look in her eyes that made him shift uncomfortably.
âYeah, definitely, um, Iâm tired we learned some new moves for Regionals today, so,â
âYeah of course.â She was still smiling.
ââNight Persephone,â
~~~
Nico flopped face-down onto his bed with a groan. He knew Persephone though he had a crush on Annabeth; he didnât blame her, heâd never really made it a point that he didnât. He wished he could come out to her and his dad, he didnât really have a reason why he hadnât besides the weight of anxiety on his lungs.
His phone buzzed again, and he wriggled upright to yank it out of his pocket.
Will: Distract me
Will: My mom is driving me insane
Nico grinned to himself, both of them were dealing with mommy issues at the moment.
Nico: idk how you expect me to distract you
Will: Just tell me about snakes or smth
Nico: you think i just have fun facts about snakes on hand?
Will: Yeah?
Nico: good
Nico: cause i do
Will: :)
Nico: snakes can slither 12.5 mph
Will: Good lord
Nico: snakes have internal ears but not external ones
Will: ??
Nico: they canât create their own body heat which is why theyre in the sun all the time
Will: Hmmmm
Nico: they smell w/their tongues
Will: I thought they had nostrils??
Nico: they do
Will: what
Nico: itâs their Jacobsonâs organ my dude it works in mysterious ways
Nico: not really but yk
Nico: sCieNcE
Will: okâŚ.
Nico: if you get bored of snakes iâve also got a bunch of random cheetah facts
Nico: i love cheetahs
Nico: very cool
Nico: fast cats
Will: Lmao go ahead
Nico: but first
Nico: whyâs your mom driving you insane
Nico: if you want to tell me ofc
Nico: not trying to be weird
Will: Nah youâre fine
Will: She wants me to focus entirely on med school and not hockey
Will: Sheâs trying to get me out of it, actually
Will: Do something ârespectableâ
Will: Not turn out like my dad
Will: Even though dad has literally NOTHING to do with hockey
Will: And in my opinion heâs not bad. Not great. Not awful yk
Will: But hockeyâs whatâs putting me through med school so
Will: Gods, I really just burdened you with that Iâm so sorry
Nico: med school huh
Nico: now i can say i know a doctor
Will: In training
Nico: close enough
Nico: youâre a great hockey player and you're going to be a great doctor
Nico: and you can always talk to me, will
Nico: youâre not burdening me with shit
Will: thanks <3
Nico didnât understand why he blushed. It was a goddamn emoji. Calm down, Di Angelo.
Will: So weâve been talking for a few weeks now. Can I call you my friend yet?
Nico snorted, feeling like he was fifteen again, sprawled on his bed, in the dark (because for some reason he didnât turn his lights on) late at night, texting his- well, anyway.
Nico: yea dumbass
Nico: weâre friends
Will: Nice
Will: Now give me cheetah facts you adorable nerd
~~~
WILL
âWill? You good?â
Will blinked, Jason coming in to focus in front of him. âUh, yeah.â
âThat was believable,â Clarisse said sarcastically from behind Jason.
Will attempted to shake the fog from his head, âYes,â He repeated.
Jason just blinked at him and Will was formulating an excuse for why he was so tired besides the fact that heâd spent all night talking to a cute figure skater with a ridiculous amount of animal facts stored in his small body when Coach Hedgeâs voice boomed from his seat on the bleachers, âSolace! You alive?â
âYes, coach!â Will shot back.
âThen why are you just standing there? Get back to the game! You too, La Rue and Grace!â
âYes, sir!â They all barked back.
Clarisse gave him a once over before skating back to her goal and Jason went over to Willâs spot with him, âYou sure youâre alright?â
âYeah, just tired.â
Jason opened his mouth, probably to question why the mom friend of their group was tired enough he nearly tripped over his stick but Will just said, âItâs fine, Jase. Itâs not a big deal.â
âGrace!â Coach Hedge screeched.
Jason gave up on trying to interrogate Will and skated back over to his spot.
~~~~
âMama, please,â Will tried, but his mother cut him off.
âWillaim. Hush. Howâs that girl you said you were dating?â
What?
He was silent for a beat too long.
âOh, baby,â His motherâs thick southern accent drenched her words. âYou broke up? Iâm so sorry.â
Oh gods, Lou Ellen Blackstone.
Will and Lou Ellen had dated for two months a long time ago, and when they were still dating heâd told his mother about her to get her to back off of his personal life a little. Their break up hadnât had a huge fallout, Lou Ellen had told him through tears in his living room that she was aromantic. They were still friends, had been even before they dated, actually, and talked to each other pretty regularly.
But the problem was, that had been three months ago, and he hadnât told his mother about their breakup. He knew sheâd ask why, and he didnât want to out Lou Ellen or make her a devil in his motherâs eyes. So heâd procrastinated coming up with a reason until heâd forgotten about it entirely.
And now it had come back to bite him in the ass.
âYeah we broke up a little while ago,â He forced himself to sound choked up, which wasnât hard, giving the way his panicked brain was now sprinting in circles on his lungs. âI just didnât disappoint you.â Probably the most honest thing heâd said in weeks, but thatâll be unpacked later.
âHoney,â She sighed sadly and Will didnât know whether or not that was on his behalf or hers.
âWell, itâs okay, because Iâm dating someone new.â
âOh?â He could hear her spine straighten. âIs it someone I know?â
No, mom, itâs not one of the country girls I grew up with.
âNo,â He winced at how southern he sounded. Heâd been talking to his mother for five minutes. âYou donât know him.â
HIM. Good Gods, Will. Yeah, you came out as bi to your mom, but still, you havenât actually mentioned a guy to her yet.
She was silent for so long his heart joined his brain in the track meet happening on top of his lungs. âWhatâs his name?â
He was so sheâd spoken that he blurted, âNico.â
What. The. Fuck. Willaim.
Apparently, his heart had won that damn track race.
âWell, what I was leading up to before you told me about what happened,â
Will hummed non-committally, trying not to sound like he was taking relieved breaths as she spoke.
âThe familyâs come for a reunion and you should bring that boy!â Will choked on his spit.
âMom, I donât know about-â
âNo, William. There isnât a set date yet so we can work around your schedule,â Fuck. âI insist, Will. I need to meet this boy you clearly like very much, even though all youâve said is his name, a mother knows.â
Umm, what.
âSure,â Will said, sounding a little strangled. âBut we have a game this weekend.â
âAlright, William.â She sounded the way she always did when he brought up hockey. âBut as I said, we can work around your schedule and his. Talk to him about it, and let me know.â
âYeah. Yeah,â Will repeated. âIâll do that.â
She hung up and he was left staring at the wilting daisies at his kitchen table.
What had he just done?

Let's Fall In Love for the Night
Summary: Will just broke up with his boyfriend. Nico offered some consolation. It ended up with some sort of a confession.
Word count: 2500 words || Rating: Teenage and Up Audiences || Read on AO3
Notes: Heavily inspired by "Let's Fall in Love for the Night" by FINNEAS. The first time I heard this song I could only think of Nico pining for Will. And somehow, watching the MV made me think of Will Solace.
***
It was past eleven in the evening when Nicoâs phone lit up, Willâs name on the screen. Nico picked it up. Despite the small fluttering in his chest, he forcefully told himself not to feel too excited. It's nothing special. Will could call him any time of the day (or night). They're best friends.
(Didnât mean that the word friend could sometimes feel so bitter for Nico)
âHey, âSup?â
âOh, hey. Youâre not sleeping yet?â
Nico rolled his eyes. âAs if you donât know about me and my sleeping schedule.â
âAh, the one that Iâve been trying to fix?â
Nico snorted. This was one of the topics that they have gone through for too many times.
âHey, Neeks. I know that itâs lateâŚâ
âIt is.â
Will let out a laugh. The kind of strained, forced laugh. Nico immediately straightened up on the couch.
âWill? Everythingâs alright?â
Will didnât say anything for a while, but Nico could hear his slow, heavy breathing. Nico clutched the phone in his hand.
âHey, Neeks. Can you come over? I think I need a pick-me-upâ Will asked, voice heavy with hesitation and uncertainty. But as Nico stood up, his answer was a firm one.
âIâll be there in 25.â
***
Nico hated the sight he saw when the door swung open. The tips of Will's lips curled up into a smile when he greeted Nico. But it's the kind of smile that Nico despised. It was a hollow smile, that didn't reach Will's eyes.
âGo get your jacket,â Nico said.
Will raised his eyebrows, still holding the doorknob.
âWhat?â
âGo get your jacket. Weâre going out. Looks like you need some fresh air.â
âAt midnight?â
âAt midnight.â
Will sighed.
âOkay,â he said. But there was a small smile on his lips.
Nico smiled.
A few minutes later, Will showed up with his blue jacket and blue beanie (it's a nice color on Will. Not that it's important or anything). He had his ukulele in his hand as he walked out of the door.
âWho said you can bring your ukulele?â
Will shrugged as he locked the door. âWell, nobody said that I couldnât bring it with me.â
Nico rolled his eyes but the small smile on Willâs lips made his heart forgot to beat for a second.
âIâm ready,â Will said, slipping his hands into the pocket of his jacket.
âCome on,â Nico said. âLetâs go and see the stars.â
***
There was just something about the lights of the city that gave Nico a sense of calmness. Thatâs why Nico brought Will here, to the hill on the outskirts of the city. Theyâre sitting on the roof of Nicoâs car, legs dangling down as they gazed at the velvet night sky. Nico stole a glance at Will, who was sitting a few inches from him.
Will was leaning back on his hands, looking up to the sky. His profile under the silvery moonlight looked almost ethereal.
Will took a deep breath and let out a long sigh. Nico quickly looked away.
âI think you already knew what this would be all about, I guessâŚâ Will said, still looking up at the night sky.
Nico hummed.
He already had a guess. A good guess.
(Didn't mean that he would ever stop listening to whatever it was that Will needed to vent about)
(Didn't mean that he would ever stop telling Will that he should've just walked away and left that piece of shit that for some absurd reasons that Nico could never, ever fathom, had this blessing of being Will's boyfriend)
(Also, didnât mean that Nico would ever tell Will one of the main reasons why it would be really delightful if Will just leave Octavian)
(Why would he ever tell Will that he loved Will, though? Why would he ever tell Will that he would do everything, anything to call Will as his?)
âBut you know you can always talk with me about it, right?â Nico said, stealing another glance at Will before mirroring Will and stared at the night sky.
Will let out a chuckle. He took a deep breath and let it out.
âWell, guess what? I think this would be the last time you hear about it.â
Nico snapped his head to Will, eyebrows slightly furrowed. Will was already staring at him, a bitter smile on his lips.
âItâs over. Or should I say, itâs finally over,â Will said, answering the question that Nico didnât have a chance to ask.
Nico blinked. His brain frantically trying to process what it meant. Should he feel relieved? Should he feel sorry for Will? Should he-
âIs it the part where I said âIâve told you so?â Nico asked.
Will chuckled but said nothing to that. He looked up to the sky again.
âThe stars are beautiful tonight,â he said, this time in a lighter tone. As if he didnât just tell Nico that he just broke up with his boyfriend for two years.
âDo you know that weâre basically made from stars?â Will turned to look at Nico, sparkles in his eyes.
Nico raised his eyebrows. âReally?â
Will hummed as he nodded. âYeah. So basically, Carl Sagan, a very cool dude, he said that all organic matters, and that definitely involves us since weâre all made of organic stuff comes from stars.â And Will started to ramble about how materials were formed in the sky and big bang theory and stuff like the nerd he was.
Nico loved it when Will was talking some nerdy shit like that. Or maybe he loved that nerdy shit because it was Will the one talking about it.
After a while, it was another silence. But this time, it was like a comfort blanket, embracing them in this sense of calmness under the stars.
âI can actually stare at the night sky forever,â Will said, and let out a long sigh. He took his ukulele, and started playing some tunes.
Nico raised an eyebrow as he recognized the tune.
âI know that song,â he said turning his head to look at Will. Will looked back at him. Under the moonlight, his smile was soft but his eyes twinkled.
âSing, then.â
Nico snorted. But Will kept his eyes at his.
âSing for me, please?â
(Sometimes Nico hated himself for not being able to refuse Will whenever he had that look in his eyes.)
Nico rolled his eyes, but Willâs smile got wider as he knew he got what he wanted without even arguing for it.
âPlease?â
Nico huffed. âOh well, only because you asked nicely,â he said, half-hoping that his fake annoyed tone was good enough.
Will smiled.
(Nico wondered whether Will has ever realized that there were stars trapped in his eyes, in his smile.)
Nico took a deep breath, and slowly let it out.
âI'm blind and afraid, the colors of this sound like a shape,â he started to sing. âThe feast of words you never could say, and I'm torn apart.â
Nico kept on singing, next to Will who was playing the ukulele. Nico kept his eyes at the dark night, at the twinkling stars.
(Nico wondered whether Will ever realized that when he smiled, itâs like he had stars twinkling in his eyes)
âYou got mirth, I got bravado...â Nico sang the last line of the song softly, almost whispering.
And then silence fell again, blanketed them with peace and quiet.
âItâs late,â Nico finally said after a while. He turned his head a little to glance at Will. The blond guy seemed to be deep in thought, staring at the horizon as he held his ukulele close to his chest.
âWill?â
âHow have you been doing, Neeks?â Will asked, turning his head to Nico. But this time, his blue eyes had this intensity that almost made Nico forgot to breathe.
âHuh?â
âTell me about your life. What have you been up to.â
Nico blinked, and then he shook his head a little, bemused.
Next to him, Will continued talking. âI feel like Iâve been such a bad friend for you. For the last couple of months, itâs always been about me and Octavian and how our relationship sucks. We never talked about you. You never told me anything about yourself.â
âHey, we talk. About work. TVs. Movies. Leo being stupid. About Jason being madly in love with Piper. We talk, Will.â
Will snorted. âNo. We talk about me. About other people. We never talk about you, Neeks.â
Nico rolled his eyes. âWhatâs there to talk about me?â
(Obviously not about he has been pining for Will for so long. Nope. They would not talk about that)
Will shrugged his shoulders. âAnything. Everything. Just tell me things about you.â
âLike what?â
âLikeâŚare you seeing someone?â
âNo.â
Once the word fell out from his lips, was exactly when Nico realized he answered it too quickly to make it sound casual. He cleared his throat.
âI mean, no?â Nico cringed when he realized that this time, he made it sound like a question.
âWhy not?â Will asked, turning his head to look at Nico, curiosity in his eyes.
Nico stayed silent. Instead of staring back at Will, he fixed his eyes at his black combat boots.
âHave you ever been in love, though?â
Yes. No. Maybe. Nico didnât know.
Nico lifted his head up as he inhaled deeply. He let it out in a long exhale.
âI donât know,â he said. (The only thing that he knew was that every time he heard that stupid word he could only think of Will).
There was another silence for a moment, but somehow, somehow Nico could just feel there is this tension between them. Nico carefully angled his neck, stealing a glance at Will. There was this strange, intense expression on Will's face, like he was thinking so hard about something.
âWill?â
âYouâre going to hate me for what Iâm about to say,â Will said, suddenly turned his head to Nico. And even in the dark night, Nico could see the fiery intensity in those blue eyes.
It made him shiver.
Nico cleared his throat. He schooled his face into the most nonchalant expression that he could. Heâs trained for this. Hiding his feeling was something that Nico did really, really well.
âIf youâre setting me up with one of your friends again then yes, I would definitely hate you. Iâve had enough of Jason and Percy shoving some random guys to me.â
âNo. Thatâs not it.â
Okay. This was serious. Will was supposed to laugh at the fact that the way Nico's cousins were way too invested in his love life.
Nicoâs brows furrowed. âWhat is it, then?â
Willâs lips thinned into a thin line as he kept his eyes at Nico. That fire in his eyes burned even brighter.
It made Nicoâs heart suddenly race and his brain freeze.
âNico, letâs fall in love with each other.â
Nicoâs heart stopped, and lurched into his stomach.
(It was ironically funny, how he had been dreaming about something like this, yet he could not believe it when it happened)
(Did it really happen?)
Nico blinked. Once. Twice.
He shook his head.
âNo.â
âWhy not?â
âYouâre not serious Will.â
âI am. Serious. Really serious.â
Nico stared at Will. His brain froze.
Will bit his lower lip. He shifted a bit. Just a bit. Carefully, he moved his hand, reached out for Nicoâs hand and covered it.
Nico wanted to hold his hand back. God, he really wanted to.
He didnât hold Willâs hand back. He knew better than that. He knew better than giving in to the illusion of calling Will as his.
âIâm serious Nico. I mean it.â
âNo, you donât.â
âCanât you fall in love with me?â
Nic wanted to laugh and scream and laugh because of how stupid, how absurd that question was.
Canât you fall in love with me, Will asked, when Nico would do anything, anything for Will.
âWill⌠This wasnât the right time-â
Will tightened his hand on Nicoâs. âWhy?â
Nico shook his head. "Will, you just broke up with your boyfriend. You're emotionally unstable right now. You probably think that you fall for me but then you'll wake up in the morning and regret everything-â
âThe only thing that I regret is just that it took me so long to realize.â
That made Nico falls silent. He stared at Will, his heart went back into a crazy race in his chest.
Will squeezed his hand. âOkay, maybe itâs not the only thing that I regret. I regret that I was too stupid to realize that I should have broken up with Octavian a long time ago. I regret that we didn't meet sooner. I justâŚ," Will paused and shook his head. "Oh God, I wish, how I wish that we had met sooner."
Nicoâs brain still failed him. Which was stupid. So many things were running in his mind right now yet he couldnât think of any words to say.
âCan I make you fall in love with me? Or at least, can you give me a chance to try my best to make you fall in love with me?â
Will shifted even closer to Nico now, their shoulders were brushing. He brought Nicoâs hand that heâs been holding to his chest. Nico could feel Willâs heartbeat and it was just so surreal, like a fragile, vulnerable dream.
âCan you give us a chance to try? To see if we can fall in love with each other?â
Nico held his eyes at Willâs. At the blue eyes that he had been dreaming of for so many nights.
For over twenty years of his life, Nico had made so many dumb and foolish decisions. Was this going to be just another one of those?
Nico closed his eyes for a moment as he took a deep breath. He opened his eyes slowly. Will was still staring at him with stars trapped in his hopeful eyes.
âThis is not going to be something that you will forget in the morning, right?â
Willâs smile was soft and tender as he shook his head.
âNo. Mornings are just going to be a reminder of how I have promised that I will show you what I feel for you.â
Nico wanted to say something beautifully eloquent. Something that could make Will understand how much this meant to him. But he knew that words were beyond this.
âOkay,â Nico said. This time he let himself take a chance and held Willâs hand back. âOkay,â he repeated. âLetâs try it. Letâs try to fall in love with each other, from tonightâŚâ
âAnd promise that weâll never forget it in the morning light,â Will whispered. He brought Nicoâs hand to his lips, and placed a soft, lingering kiss on his knuckles.
Will cupped Nicoâs cheek with his other hand. Nico closed his eyes, and as he felt Willâs warm lips over his, he let himself fall into this thing called love.

Additional Notes:
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed it :). Reblogs, replies or any other feedbacks are much appreciated ALWAYS made my day :')
The lyric that Nico sang was from "epitaph" by Hippocampus. I swear I would write another fic based on that song. (Also please listen to that song. It's just a great great GREAT song)
I find it easier for me to write a fic based on songs. So if you have a song in mind that reminds you of Nico/Will, mind to share it with me? I'd love to hear your thoughts about songs that have the Solangelo vibes!

Ramble: Percy Jackson Hogwarts Houses
Sorry for posting about Percy Jackson so much. I didnât intend to but it is a current interest.
So originally this was going to be a rant because this started with a excerpt from a fan-fiction I saw where Nico was thinking about how he needed to get into Gryffindor with all his friends and I lost it. If you think Percy is in any house besides Hufflepuff when his fatal flaw is LOYALTY then you need help. But I would dare to go as far as to say almost none of the main characters in PJO or HoO would be in Gryffindor.
People tend to want to put protagonists who are brave in Gryffindor even when they may fit better in another house. I also think there are a lot of misconceptions about all the houses in general. Like, that Hufflepuffs are all meek, like where does that say its one of their traits?
Anyway, this is a ramble instead of a rant because I had fun sorting all the characters and arguing my reasoning in my head so...thatâs what this is. Enjoy? Hate? Get annoyed by the length?
Percy Jackson: Hufflepuff
As stated earlier his fatal flaw is loyalty which is a Hufflepuff trait. Not that people in other houses canât have loyalty but itâs specifically stated as a Hufflepuff trait and itâs Percyâs fatal flaw. Also Percy is said by the fandom to be food driven and the Hufflepuff common room is right next to the kitchens. Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders and how many times did Percy have to find something on a quest and then found it? Thatâs right; multiple. He wants to help everyone he comes across because heâs compassionate. Heâs a Hufflepuff.
Annabeth Chase: Slytherin
Let me start this off by making sure youâre all clear on the fact that evil has never been a Slytherin trait and if anyone comes at me with that kind of thinking I will make it so you no longer exist in my reality. So are you going to tell me Annabeth is not ambitious, cunning, determined, and willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants and get where she wants to be? Because that sounds like Annabeth to me and also sounds 100% like all the Slytherin traits.
Grover: Gryffindor.
His whole deal is wanting to get his Searchers License so he can go on a dangerous quest that no other satyrs have returned from in order to find Pan. That sounds brave to me. No one else has returned and you still wanna go? Kudos to you because I sure as hell would not.
Nico: Slytherin
Sorry my goth baby boy, I know in the fan-fiction you didnât want to be in Slytherin but I personally think you belong there. Nico is ambitious and cunning. He wants something, wants to do something or accomplish something and he freaking goes for it. He sees and opportunity and takes it.
Jason: Gryffindor
Jason was hard for me to place because heâs kinda just supposed to be this perfect soldier/leader which would actually make me lean towards Slytherin but I donât think heâs actually ambitious or cunning. The only times he did anything ambitious it was just him doing what he thought was expected of him. I do think heâs brave though and I just donât see him belonging anywhere else.
Leo: Ravenclaw
There are different kinds of Ravenclaws and Leo is the Mad Scientist. He may seem a little socially unaware or socially awkward and when heâs in his element he may actually seem a little crazy but his incredibly brilliant and we just canât keep up with how his brain is working which is why he may seem a bit crazy. I donât think anyone would fight me when I say Leo is incredibly smart and creative. He built/fixed Festus and built the Argo 2 in an amount of time no one really believed possible. Heâs a genius.
Piper: Slytherin
Had a hard time placing her too. I really only placed her in Slytherin because she has charmspeak and Slytherins are charming. It âs not much of a case with her lol.
Hazel: Hufflepuff
Her mother used her her whole life and then was going to use her again to quicken Gaeaâs awakening and Hazel still gave up Elysium so her mom wouldnât be sent to the Fields of Punishment.Call it loyalty or kindness or compassion but all those are Hufflepuff traits.
Frank: Hufflepuff
I didnât really want to put him in Hufflepuff but we all know he gives of Hufflepuff energy.
Reyna: Slytherin
Again, ambitious, cunning, and determined. She is clearly a Slytherin.
Iâm writing this while Iâm tired but I needed to get this out because Iâve been thinking it all day lol.
Feel free to fight me and give your opinions but Iâm pretty set on a few of these. Particularly Percy, Annabeth, and Leo are the ones you wonât be able to change my mind on.

Golden Rings 23: A Hat
The Storybrooke sequel to Golden Cuffs
Jefferson tries to get help
Read on AO3
Inside a cramped little cottage in a cramped little town in the mountains of a flat planet that flies through space on the back of four elephants on top of a turtle, he is having dinner with his family.Â
Technically, they are Leoâs family, but technicalities have never troubled him. These people have welcomed him into their lives. This smoke-filled, boisterous cottage is more home to him than the solemn rock quarry where Jefferson spent the first few miserable decades of his life.Â
The meal is mostly over, but everyone lingers over pudding and conversation and beer. A few of his sisters-in-law have gathered up the dishes and are headed back to the kitchen for the washing up.
His daughter sits on his lap. She is almost too big for the gesture and maybe thatâs why she wants it so much. Itâs certainly why he lets her do it. How much longer will he have with his little girl? Even if they have escaped from the Queenâs curse, they cannot escape time. There will only be a few more years before Grace is more a woman than a baby. Sheâll be as pretty as her mother, and just as smart, winding her way through the hearts of everyone who meets her.
But for now, his girl sits on his lap and listens to her family. Beside him, Leo squeezes his arm.Â
She leans into him. âNo matter where we go, itâs never better than being home.â  Â
He smiles at her, his wife, his life. Her face is ruddy from drink and smoke. Her blonde hair curls in the heat, teasing wisps escape from her bun. Her plump curves fill out her dress like bursting sausage. She has a shine of bacon grease around her mouth and a touch of beer foam on the tip of her nose. In all the lands in all the worlds, he has never seen anyone more beautiful.Â
Somewhere down the table, a baby cries. One of his many sisters-in-law is trying to soothe one of Graceâs many cousins, without much success. The infant has been fussing all night, and now the poor thingâs wails have drowned out the riotous conversation.
ââEre now!â Leonaâs mother calls down from the head of the table. âAre you going to help that poor babby or do I âave to?â
His sister-in-law--a washed out, nervous looking woman whose name no one can remember--looks gratefully up at Nanny Ogg. âCan you?â
Nanny Ogg snorts. This grande dame--which she translates as âbig womanâ--is the matriarch of the Ogg clan and the second-most powerful witch in the Ramptops Mountains, though she doesnât try as hard. Sheâs had five husbands (and married three of them), fifteen children, and more grandchildren and great-grandchildren than anyone in Lancre can count.Â
The baby is passed from hand to hand down the table, squalling all the way. When it finally gets to the head of the table, it is placed into the very solid arms of a round old woman dressed in black. She has a pipe, a pint, and a black pointy hat. (Thereâs nothing magic about a pointy hat, except that it says that the person underneath it is a witch.) She also has lively dark eyes--like Leoâs, like Graceâs--and the widest grin most people have ever seen.
The current occupant of the old womanâs lap is a mangy ball of fur and claws named Greebo. Though known to pick fights with bears (and not lose), heâs nothing but an old softy to Nanny Ogg. Still, the cat is smart enough to know that he is always second place to any child. As soon as the baby is in the witchâs arms, he scampers out of the way.
Jeffersonâs life would have been hell if Nanny Ogg hadnât given him her approval to marry Leo. They would have married anyway--Leo wouldnât have let anything stop them--but coming home like this would have been⌠difficult. There are a dozen tiny ways an Ogg can tell you they donât like you--and a hundred large and painful ones. But Nanny Oggâs welcoming nature--and Jeffersonâs endless potential to bring her presents from far-off lands--had ensured that they were welcome any time.Â
Within a minute of entering Nanny Oggâs embrace, the screaming baby quiets. Within another minute, it sleeps peacefully, despite the raucous conversation around the table.Â
Perched on his knees, Grace looks curious. âWas that magic, Gran?â
âCoo-ee, no, my duck!â Nanny Ogg chuckles. âThe day I needs magic to calm a babe is the day you lot can put me in the ground!â
âBut you did it so fast!â Grace persists.Â
âCoz I been doing it so long,â Nanny Ogg explains. âEver since your Uncle Jason was a wee thing! Thereâs a knack to it, but it ainât magic.â
Grace ponders this for a moment. Children are allowed to speak freely around Nanny Oggâs table--provided they keep the conversation interesting. âPapa knows a man who does magic.â
Jefferson thinks about explaining, but clearly this is a private conversation.
Nanny Ogg nods sagely. âI imagine your dad knows all kinds of people, the work he does.â
âHe was a funny little man,â Grace says. âHe has a funny voice and heâs all green.â
âTakes all sorts, luv. We canât help the way weâre made.â
âHe gave me a yellow dress, to match Mamaâs pink one. He pulled it out of the air! We were there for--why were we there, Papa?â
âA wedding,â Jefferson answers. âThe Dark One and Belle wanted us to be there for their wedding.â
âIt was a lovely day,â Leo smiles at him while stroking their daughterâs hair. âDo you remember dancing in that big ballroom, Grace? Remember how he made the instruments play themselves?â
Nanny Ogg snorts. âSounds like a show-off, if you ask me.â
âOh he is,â Jefferson agrees. âI donât know if youâd like him, and Mistress Weatherwax would hate him.â
âWell, thereâs not many I donât like, and thereâs not many Esme Weatherwax donât hate, at least at first.âÂ
They laugh at that, as they laugh at everything. The conversation moves on to other topics. Later the lot of them move away from the table and into the parlor. Around a fire and more beer, Nanny Ogg brings out her banjo, but the evening still manages to end happily.Â
He puts Grace to bed in a room with her cousins, a group of girls near her age. He kisses her and makes sure she has her stuffed rabbit. Then he goes up to the bedroom where Leo is waiting.
His wife is a dream, all satiny pink. All soft and warm and round. Like a sunset cloud with grasping arms. Like candy floss with a libido. She is everything. All the happiness he has now is because of her. This family, this life, their daughter. Everything in his past led to her, everything in the present comes from her, everything in the future will be theirs together.Â
They make love, full of food and clumsy with drink. Their lips are loose and sloppy. They giggle and try to stay quiet in this crowded house. Their hands know their bodies. They know how to pleasure each other. They know. They feel. They love. They delight in each other and fall asleep in each otherâs arms.
When Jefferson wakes up, everything is gone.Â
****
For the ten thousand, three hundred ninetieth time, Jefferson woke up alone. In a giant, empty bed, inside a giant, empty house. He woke up, like he always did, with a gnawing ache in his chest and a burning desire for nothing more than to go back to sleep. Back to his dream. His best dreams were always about them. Leo. Grace. Home.
Sitting up in bed, Jefferson covered his face with his hands and let a dry sob rack through him. Tears would come later. First sob of the morning was always dry.
âMorningâ was not the right word. It was a gray spring afternoon, more or less identical to every other gray afternoon heâd woken up in since he was brought over to this world. Over the years--over so many years--he had gotten in the habit of starting his day when most people in Storybrooke began to end theirs. The only reason he woke up at all was to get a chance to see his daughter walk home from school.Â
The telescope was in the office, what he tended to think of as the hat room. This side of the massive house faced Main Street. He could see quite a lot--the diner, the Sheriffâs Station, a few important houses. And he had learned quite a lot, just by looking at all these people living their lives.Â
Nothing changed in Storybrooke. Children didnât get older. The old and sick never died. People worked the same jobs no matter how much they hated them. There was a girl he saw walking to and from the diner who had been nine months pregnant for twenty-eight years. Everyone was miserable, alone and unloved in one way or another, but they all carried on with what they thought were their lives.Â
Until the day a yellow bug drove into town.Â
Looking through the telescope, Jefferson trained his eyes on a lime green winter coat. The coat was bouncing over the shoulders of a young girl as she hopped, skipped and jumped her way around the sidewalk. His throat tightened, as it did every time he saw her. In the lens of the telescope, she looked close enough to reach out and touch.Â
Grace was walking with another girl--Jefferson didnât know her name. She was poor, from Old Town. Her father was gone and her mother worked long hours for low pay. Girls like that didnât get their accomplishments written up about in the newspaper the way Grace did every time she won the Science Fair. Until a few months ago, Grace had never spoken to this girl. Both of them had walked the same path from the school to the abandoned library, twenty feet apart, every day for twenty-eight years, without ever interacting with each other.
Until the day Sheriff Swan started a youth outreach campaign, and made a point to talk about how much safer kids were if they used the buddy system when they didnât have an adult around.
Then Grace had looked up from her routine, and she had seen the other girl looking back. Both of them needed someone to walk with. Both of them were looking for a friend. Both of them found one. It was a little thing, but it was a change.
He watched them walk from the library to the house in New Town where Tim and Mia Lewis lived. The people Grace thought were her parents. Every once in a while, they ran an ad in the Storybrooke Daily Mirror--all three of them with big smiles, the adults offering their services in insurance and real estate.Â
The lights were off inside the house, so he couldnât see into the kitchen. He couldnât see what healthy snacks Mia had made for the girls today. He couldnât see what game they played to unwind for a bit before Mia made sure they both started their homework. A few hours later, the other girlâs mother would stop by after her shift at Grannyâs. He never knew if she thanked Mia for watching her daughter. Maybe it was just understood. Maybe Mia said she was just doing what Sheriff Swan advised, watching out for children who might otherwise get into trouble, being alone and unsupervised.
Once Grace was out of his sight, Jefferson moved the telescope to look around town. Not too many changes today. Archie Hopper was walking his dalmatian. Marco the handyman was making another trip to the hardware store. The stranger on the motorcycle idled outside Marine Automotive; he seemed to be watching Marco. Mrs. Gold was strutting away from the pawn shop with her head held high.
He watched her, this woman who used to be Belle. It looked like she was going towards City Hall. Curious. Was she applying for a permit? Was there some licence she needed to renew? His fingers itched to pick up the phone and call the Dark One about what he had seen. He was the only other human being in town, the only person who knew the truth about anything. It was just the Dark One, Jefferson, and Queen Regina.Â
But he couldnât bother him too much. They couldnât raise any more suspicion than they already had with their one secret meeting in the woods. The Dark One was still trying to maintain his cover as âMr. Gold.â Besides, what difference could it make that Belle was running an errand to City Hall?
With a sigh, Jefferson moved away from the telescope. Heâd been awake for more than an hour, it was time to put on pants.Â
In no time at all, he had showered, dressed, and chugged down a protein shake. Most days, it was hard for him to summon up the will to cook or eat. He kept his body going with prepackaged meal replacements. They tasted like crap, but at least he didnât have to think about them. He left cooking for people who thought they had something to live for.Â
He made his way to the front doors. The house had a wide driveway that ran under a large overhang. Whenever visitors came, they could disembark from the vehicles and go into the house without the hazards of rain or snow.Â
If he ever had visitors.
At the moment, and for the past twenty-eight years, all he had was the most recent copy of the Storybrooke Daily Mirror. It wasnât a bastion of hard-hitting journalism, but for a long time it had been the only way he could know anything about the town he spent so much time looking at. The newspaper had given him names to put to the faces--Mayor Mills, Mr. Gold, Sheriff Humbert, and later Sheriff Swan. It had been a lifeline, and he still clung to it. For nearly three decades, the dates on the front page had been the only changes he had seen anywhere in this town.Â
Todayâs date was April 2nd, 2012. The headline was about the continued search for a missing person. Kathryn Nolan, a paralegal working at the firm of Duke & Duke, had been missing for more than a month. There had been sightings of a woman matching her description in various parts of Storybrooke, but by the time the police arrived, all traces of her had gone. Sheriff Swan encouraged anyone with any information regarding Mrs. Nolanâs whereabouts to call the station.
On the next page, there was an editorial decrying the lack of effort put forth by Kathrynâs husband, David Nolan, to aid in the search. Sydney Glass stopped just short of outright accusing Mr. Nolan of gross negligence or foul play. He only noted the amount of time Mr. Nolan spent with the schoolteacher, Miss Blanchard. The article concluded with speculation that perhaps Mrs. Nolan was not missing at all, but had run away from a terminally unhappy home.     Â
After finishing the paper, he put it away in the office closet and went back to the telescope. The lights were on in the house where Grace lived. The other girl had been picked up. Tim Lewis was home from work. The three of them were making dinner together. Mia was stirring a pot of chili and Tim was taking a bag of corn out of the freezer.
âShe doesnât like corn, guys,â Jefferson muttered to himself. âShe wonât eat the chili if you put corn in it. Youâve been taking care of her for twenty-eight years and youâve never figured that out.â
He shook his head and looked away. Sometimes it was maddening to watch the town like this, to see these people make the same mistakes, over and over. Emma Swan had made some changes, but there were still so many ways to be unhappy.
He watched dinner in the Lewis household. He watched Grace carefully pick out all the corn from her bowl of chili and set it into her paper napkin. He watched Mia shake her head at his daughter. He watched Tim lecture her about wasting food. He watched Grace scowl as she picked up the napkin and dumped the offending corn kernels back into the chili. She ate, but she looked like she was going to vomit.
âIâm sorry, love,â he whispered. He had to get to her, somehow. He had to let her know that he was her father. He had to get her back to Leo.
After dinner, the family watched TV. Grace sat on a couch between Tim and Mia, and flickering light bathed over all of them. They werenât bad people, her fake-parents. They did love her, and they did the best they could to raise her to be healthy and successful in this world. Whoever Tim and Mia had been before, they were victims of the curse too. They had never meant to steal another coupleâs daughter.Â
He had to put this right. He had to end this curse. Jefferson didnât have much power, but he would do anything to put his family back together.Â
He moved the telescope away from Grace. After a brief search, he found the big pink house in Old Town where the Dark One lived. The lights were on, but no one was visible through the windows. If he called on the phone, the Dark One would tell him to be patient. The Savior would break the curse in due time.Â
But Jefferson had already waited too long.Â
Scanning through town, he set his sights on the Sheriffâs station. Storybrooke was peaceful enough that most of the cops could hang up their guns in time for dinner. They were all long gone by now. Even Sheriff Swan was packing up and getting ready to go home for the night.Â
Perfect.Â
Picking up the sleek, silver cordless phone, Jefferson punched in the numbers he had seen in the newspaper. Through the telescope, he could see Emma Swan hear the phone ringing. She slumped and grimaced in the way of everyone being clawed back into a job they thought was done for the day. Then she straightened up, and picked up the receiver on her desk.
âSheriffâs station, this is Emma.â
Jefferson cleared his throat. âYeah, is this the number to call if somebody saw Kathryn Nolan?â
Perking up, Emma fumbled on her desk for a pen and paper. âIt sure is. Who am I talking to?â
That question was too complicated to get into. âYeah, I donât know for sure if it was Kathryn Nolan, but it looked like a woman in her mid-thirties, caucasian, looked kinda haggard. I, uh, I tried to talk to her, but she just kept walking through the woods.â
âWhich woods are those? Where was this?â
âOh, yeah, it was the north woods. You ever been up on Angus Drive?â
âCanât say that I have. Still kind of new to the area.â
âYeah, well thatâs where she was. About ten minutes ago I saw her, she was walking towards town. Like I said, I tried to get her attention, but she didnât listen. I didnât wanna try to chase after her. Might scare her, you know. Make things worse.â
âRight, right,â Emma said. âSo, north woods, Angus Drive, ten minutes ago. And what was your name?â
Jefferson hung up the phone. Then he got his coat and a scarf. It was time to go for a walk. Â
****
There were several cars in the massive garage of the house where Jefferson had been a prisoner. For the first twenty-eight years, he hadnât been able to open the garage door to get them on the road. Even after Emma had rolled in, the cars were still useless. None of them had gasoline.
So Jefferson walked. He had walked along the highway and through the woods and over the town line as far as he could before something terrible happened. He walked into town sometimes, trying to find a way out. When heâd noticed âMr. Goldâ acting strangely, he had walked to the pawn shop.
At this point, he knew the town better than anyone else. Who knows the shape of a cage better than the captive inside? He knew the borders and boundaries, especially the area around the house. He knew where the road made a wicked hairpin turn, where someone who was still kind of new to the area wouldnât know what was coming and could be caught off guard.Â
The yellow Volkswagen had better brakes than he thought--Emma stopped short of actually hitting him when he emerged from the woods onto the road in front of her. Heâd been willing to take the hit, half-curious to see if the curse would let any injury last longer than a week or so.Â
Emmaâs quick driving stopped him from actually getting hurt, but the collision was close enough that he could fall to the ground in a convincing show. She stopped the car and got out when she saw him.Â
âOh my God, are you okay?â
On the gravel shoulder of the highway, Jefferson groaned and clutched his leg.
âSir? Sir, can you talk? Iâm Emma Swan, do I need to call for EMTs?â
âNo,â Jefferson gritted his teeth, swallowed the imaginary pain. âNo, I live around here. Iâll be fine. Can you just get me back to my house?â
For just a moment, she hesitated. âUh, sure. Yeah, letâs get you inside, at least.â
She helped him up and into the passenger seat of the bug. Then she began to drive.
âSo where do you live, MrâŚ?â
âAngus Drive.â He answered only the question she had said out loud. âItâs up ahead.â
âFunny.â Now that the moment of panic had passed, Emma seemed less willing to accept half-answers. âI just got a call about that address. A man said he saw a missing person out this way. Maybe you saw her when you were out. A blonde woman in her mid-thirties?â
He shook his head. âThat sounds like your description, Sheriff.â
âFirst, Iâm not in my mid-thirties. Second, how did you know Iâm the Sheriff?â
âI read the paper. And who else would be getting a call about a missing person? And, youâve got your badge on your hip.â
She frowned. âGuess that all checks out. Yeah, Iâm Sheriff Swan. Whatâs your name?â
Again, Jefferson didnât answer. âThis is the house on the right.â
âA house?â Emma said as she parked under the awning. âThis looks more like a hotel! Do you have a big family or something?â
Jefferson opened the door, but made sure to wait for her to help him out of the car. âNo,â he said. âItâs just me.â
âThe sign on the mailbox says Dogdson.âÂ
âSure does.â
Leaning on Emma, Jefferson pretended to hobble up the stairs to get into the front door. The curse had never given him a key to this house, so he always left it unlocked. Someday, when the curse was broken, he would find a way to lock the door behind him and walk away a free man. He would take Grace and walk all the way to the Discworld if he had to.
âWhere should I put you?â Emma asked once they were in the foyer.
âClosest living room is over there.â
She set him up on one of the white leather couches with his âbadâ leg propped up on the arm. âWant me to take a look at it?â
âNo, no, Iâll be fine. Listen, Iâm kind of an amateur cartographer. Upstairs, Iâve got maps for all of these woods. They could be useful to you, since you donât know the area well.â
Hands on her hips, Emma Swan looked down at him. She looked shrewd, suspicious. Kind of like Leo, only skinny. âI never told you I donât know the area.â
Jefferson grinned. What was the old saying about honesty? Better to tell the truth because then you donât have to keep track of your lies? âI guess you didnât.â Â
âThe only person I told that to lately was a man on the phone who also didnât tell me his name.â Emma sat down on the coffee table in front of the couch so they were on the same level. âDid you actually see Kathryn Nolan around here?â
He didnât stop grinning. âNo.â
âAnd your leg isnât hurt at all.â
It wasnât a question, but he still answered. âNo.â
âCan you give me a single good reason why I shouldnât arrest you on the very serious charge of Wasting the Sheriffâs Time?â
Jefferson sat up. âI do need your help,â he said. âBut I thought if I told you what was going on, you would think I was crazy.â
Emma didnât blink at that. âPeople who might be crazy need just as much help as people who might be sane. Letâs start from the beginning: Tell me your name.â
âJefferson,â he answered immediately.
âJefferson,â she repeated. âIs that a first name or a last name?â
âFirst.â
âAnd the last name?â
He didnât really have one. Few people in the old world did. âOgg,â he answered.Â
It was the name he went by on worlds where last names were common. Leoâs name. He was part of a proud tradition of men becoming Mr. Ogg when they married an Ogg woman.Â
Emma looked him in the eyes, long and hard. âJefferson Ogg,â she said slowly. âThatâs⌠such a weird name, I donât think you made it up.â
âI didnât,â he said.Â
âUh-huh,â she said. âAnd what do you need help with, Jefferson Ogg?â
âIâŚâ Gods, how could he even start? He would just have to show her. âItâs upstairs.â
She gave him another look, not speaking. Then she pulled a cell phone out of her pocket and pressed some buttons.Â
âTexting on the job?â
âI left my walkie-talkie in the car.â She put her phone away. âJust letting my roommate know where I am and to call the dispatch office if she doesnât hear from me in 10 minutes.â
That was almost funny, that she thought he was dangerous. As if the most dangerous person in Storybrooke wasnât signing Sheriff Swanâs paychecks.Â
âLetâs go upstairs,â he said.
****
It was the first time anyone other than him had set foot in the office. He wondered what Emma made of the room. All Jefferson ever cared about was the telescope and the walk-in closet where he stored the newspapers. Neither of those things drew Emmaâs focus.
âThatâs a lot of top hats,â she said as she stood in front of the lit-up shelf. There were rows of them, all made of an endless supply of black felt. âYou part of a show choir or something?â
âNo.â He shut the door behind them, locked it. âThe hats⌠are actually what I need your help with.â He pulled out some of the felt, some sewing needles and a pair of scissors. He tossed them all onto the table in front of her. âI need you to make one.â
Now the expression on Emmaâs face was what âsuspiciousâ wanted to be when it grew up. âYou think Iâm a hatter?â
He stood behind her, nudging her into a chair in front of the raw materials. âI think you can do extraordinary things, Emma. I think you can do exactly what I need you to. I think you can save me.â
Her expression morphed from disbelief to exhaustion. âNo, not you too. Have you been talking to Henry? What is it with this town and people thinking I can save them?â
âBecause you can!â He put his hands on either side of the chair and pushed her to the table. Then he leaned over her to keep her from getting up. âYou are a special person, Emma. You made the changes start, you can make everything good again.â
âBring back the happy endings, is that what you want from me?â
She was angry. She meant the remark to be flippant. But she was so right it brought tears to his eyes.Â
âYes,â Jefferson whispered. âYes, thatâs all I want. The Dark One says itâs your destiny, that you have already brought--â
âWait, who?â
âThe Dark One,â he said. âRumpelstiltskin, he--â
âWill you listen to yourself?â Emma pushed herself up away from the table and stood up to confront him. âDo you think youâve had a conversation with Rumpelstiltskin? What, do you think Regina is the Evil Queen too?â
âYes!â he shouted. He picked the felt up off the table and shook the fabric in her face. âYou have all the pieces, Emma! Why canât you put them together?â
âBecause this is the real world!â she shouted back.Â
âEvery world is real!âÂ
She made for the door. The lock kept her busy for just enough time that Jefferson was able to catch up with her. Gently, he pulled her away from the door and stood in front of it. Just being taller than her was enough to make him look like a threat.
âYou donât understand,â he tried to keep his voice from breaking. âThere are so many worlds out there. Iâve been to most of them. The Dark One gave me a hat that I can use to travel from world to world. I could use it to get out of here, but I donât have it anymore!â
Emma reached for her phone. He grabbed her wrist and pulled the device out of her hand.
âIt needs magic,â he explained, as calmly as he could. âIâve made a hundred hats, but theyâre just hats, no good to anyone. I need magic. You have magic. You brought magic to Storybrooke the day you came here.â
She frowned at the phone in his hand and stepped back. âThere was nothing different about the day I came here.â
âYouâre right.â Keeping her in his sights, he stepped away from the office door and toward the closet. âIt was the day after you arrived, the day after you broke the sign. October 24th, 2011. That was the day the clock on the library started to tick.â
Emma just gaped at him. âHow could you remember that?â
âIt was the most important day in the history of this town. The first real day to happen in twenty-eight years.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âCan I show you?â he asked. âIâll even give you your phone back, so you can tell Mary Margaret youâre okay. But I just need you to promise that youâll hear me out.â
She glared and held out her hand. âYou are damn lucky you donât have a gun right now.â
He watched her press the buttons, then put her phone back in her pocket.Â
âYou bought yourself another ten minutes because I donât feel like filling out the paperwork necessary to arrest you.â
Jefferson went to the closet. âItâs in here,â he said. âAll the evidence I have is in here.â
She put her hands on her hips, squared her shoulders. âGo get it then.âÂ
Right, Sheriff Swan wasnât going to be the first one to go through an unknown door in the house of an obvious lunatic. Jefferson opened it, and showed her the newspapers. Twenty-eight stacks and counting. Each stack was made of twelve bundles, reaching to the ceiling. Three hundred and forty one bundles. The whole of the curse, contained in this room.
âI saved them all,â he said. âTwenty-eight yearsâ worth.â
âSo youâve been saving newspapers since you were, what, five?âÂ
âSince the day I came to this town,â he answered. âSince the day anyone came to this town.â Kneeling on the ground, he moved the smallest pile and pulled out the smallest bundle. âDo you want to know what day that was, Emma?â
She didnât answer, but he took the paper out from the bottom of the bundle and held it up in front of her.Â
âGo on,â he growled. âRead it.â
âUh, it says that Mayor Mills announced a new committee to--â
âRead the date!â he snapped.Â
Jaw clenched, Emma yanked the paper out of his hands and looked at the top. She didnât read it out loud, but he saw her eyebrows furrow.Â
âThatâs⌠my birthday,â she whispered. âLike, that was the day I was born.â
âOctober 23rd, 1983,â he said. âThat was the day the curse started. The day you were born was the day the Evil Queen cursed us all to live in a world without magic.â
âThatâs--â
âThere was no time.â He didnât let her speak. âNothing changed, nothing happened. We were frozen. Most of them didnât notice, but I did. I remembered, IâŚâ He couldnât go on. âI thought I was crazy. I thought nothing I knew was real. I thought I had lost everything. But you⌠Youâre the Savior. You can bring it back.â
Emma shook her head and looked down at the newspaper again. âEven if all this is true, why am I the one who has to--wait a minute!â She pointed at the paper, at a picture of the mayor. âThis is a crock of shit! Thatâs Regina! Regina wasnât mayor on the day I was born!â She flipped through the other pages. âYeah, look at this. Sydney looks the same in this picture as he does today. Look at the school news, Iâve seen these kids!â
âI told you, time was frozen.â
âOr you put a fake date on an old paper just to mess with me!â She kept looking at the newspaper, seeing but not understanding. âYeah, this ad here, this is Tim Lewis. He gave me a discount on my car insurance. His daughter, Paige? She looks exactly like she does in this ad. Pretty sure sheâs eleven, not thirty-nine.â
Jefferson ripped the paper out of Emmaâs hands. âShe is not his daughter!â He snarled. âWill you listen to me? That girlâs name is Grace. She is eleven. She has been eleven for twenty-eight years!â
âI--â Emma put her hands up and let out a slow breath. âI donât think either one of us is going to convince the other.â
âI donât care if you believe me, I just need you to make a gods-damned hat!â
To Jeffersonâs shock, Emma seemed ready to do what he asked, maybe in the name of de-escalating the situation. She went back to the table, slowly sat down, and picked up the felt. âYou need this so you can go back to Fairytale Land?â
He shook his head. âNo, I donât care about that world anymore. I need to go back to the Discworld.â
Emma squinted as she tried to thread a needle. âDiscworld? Iâve heard of those books. Theyâre supposed to be funny, right?â
Jefferson didnât smile. âItâs a real place.â
Looking up, Emma opened her mouth, and then closed it. âSure.â She began to half-heartedly jam the needle between two pieces of felt.Â
He collapsed into a chair by the telescope. Gods, was she really doing this? Jefferson only knew enough about magic to know that he was better off not playing with it. But if the Dark One was right, then Emma Swan wouldnât be able to stop herself from using magic. She would do it naturally, maybe accidentally. It wouldnât matter if the hat looked awful. All it had to do was work.
âMy wife is from there,â he offered as a way to make conversation.Â
Emma didnât look up from the stitches. âFrom Discworld? Does that make her a witch or something?â
He shook his head. âHer mother is. I guess she could be too, if she wanted. Most of the time witchcraft is just knowing something other people donât know.â
âLike how to make a hat?â Emma looked at him through a tube of felt. âItâs been a long time since my last Home Ec class. This is not going to be pretty.â
âIt just needs to work,â he muttered. âJust⌠get it to work.â
Sighing, Emma pulled out her phone again.
âHas she even answered you?â he asked. âMaybe sheâs off somewhere screwing David Nolan.â
A glare. âIâm doing you a favor by working on this hat. So maybe you could do me a favor and not say rude things about my friends.â
âI got you here by talking about Kathryn Nolan. Do you actually care about her?â
Emma kept her eyes on her work. âSheâs a person. I care about people. She could be lost in the woods, disoriented and hungry. Of course I want to find her.â
âDo you think sheâs still alive?â
âI have to hope so.â She cut one of the threads. âWe havenât found a body, or even body parts. If some monster was out there cutting out hearts and putting them in jewelry boxes, at least then thereâd be some evidence.â She gave him a sideways glance. âDo you care about Kathryn Nolan? Or do you think sheâs just a fairytale character?â
âI care about her because sheâs a fairytale character,â Jefferson said. âHer name was Princess Abigail. She was the daughter of King Midas. She gave me a lot of gold just for trying to find a way to reverse the effects of her fatherâs⌠gift.â
Emma nodded, clearly humoring him. âIâd heard that King Midas had a daughter. I didnât know her name was Abigail. Doesnât sound Greek, but what do I know?â She was sewing the brim on the hat, after that it would be finished.Â
Jefferson stood up. His feet moved on a schedule that was bigger than Emma Swan. He looked through the telescope. It was nine-thirty. Bedtime.
âDo you want to see her?â he whispered to Emma.
âKathryn?â
âMy daughter.â
They were putting her to bed, Tim and Mia both. She was almost too big for the gesture, but maybe that was why she wanted it so much. Jefferson felt Emmaâs presence beside him, and he stepped away from the telescope.Â
âThey never remember to give her the stuffed rabbit,â he said. âThatâs the only one that keeps her from having nightmares.â
âOh, thatâs Paige,â Emma said. She looked up from the window. âYou⌠have a telescope pointed at the bedroom of an eleven year old girl.â
âSheâs my daughter,â Jefferson repeated. âIâve lost her mother. Grace doesnât know who I am. I need to keep an eye on her.â
Emma stayed between Jefferson and the telescope. âIs it because Paige is adopted? Are you her birth father or something?â
He didnât know whether to scream or cry, so he laughed. Emma kept talking.
âItâs no shame if thatâs the case. Believe me, I know how mixed-up it can be to have a kid thatâs yours but isnât yours.â
âShut up,â Jefferson said through gritted teeth. âGrace is mine. Mine and my wifeâs.â
âYou said you lost your wifeâŚâ
âYes! And Iâll only find her again once I have a hat that works!â He almost grabbed her by the shoulders, but she was too fast. She made it back to the table and kept it as a barrier between them.
âEnough!â Emma said. She picked up the hat and tossed it over to him. âThis is the last of my goodwill, understand? Iâm going to leave now. Youâre gonna let me out of this room and out of this house. Iâm gonna call Tim and tell him to buy his daughter some blackout curtains. If I ever catch wind of you snooping around little girls again, I will personally make sure you rot in jail.â
Jefferson looked down at the crumpled felt in his hands. It was only a hat by the most generous definition. But maybe it would be enough.
When he looked up, Emma was gone. From outside, he heard the rumble of a car engine starting up. As she drove away, the sound grew fainter. He still held the hat in his hands.Â
It didnât feel magical. His old hat had a certain⌠quality. There was an aura about it, not quite tangible. But there was a feeling he got when he looked at his hat. A feeling of⌠possibility. Like there was so much more to it than what met the eye. There was none of that in the hat Emma had made.Â
Maybe magic was different here. Maybe there was a way. Some way. He had to try. He would never know if he didnât try.Â
He closed his eyes and took a breath. âPlease.â With all his heart, he prayed to any power that was listening.Â
With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the hat to the ground, as he had done a thousand different times in a hundred different worlds. The hat spun and he waited for it to keep spinning, waited for it to grow larger and disappear into a whirlpool of purple smoke. He waited for the hole in the whirlpool, the portal that could take him anywhere.
But the hat barely made a full rotation before it stopped spinning. It sat on the ground, unmoving, unmagical.
Jefferson stared at it, until his vision blurred with tears. Then he began to laugh.Â
Of course it didnât work! Why would anything work in this world? Of course there was no escape! Of course he was going to die in this world! Or worse--he would live forever in a world without time and heâd never see Leona again.
He sobbed. His legs gave out and sent him careening to the floor. He lay face down on the patterned carpet, stared at Emma Swanâs misshapen hat, and wept like a child.Â
****
Later--an hour? A year? Did it make a difference?--when couldnât cry anymore, Jefferson pulled himself off the floor. He made it all the way to the chair before he collapsed again and hung his head in his hands.Â
It hadnât worked. The Savior hadnât worked. The side of goodness hadnât worked. Well, Jefferson was never one to get too hung up about paltry matters like good and evil.Â
Slowly wheeling the office chair over to the desk, Jefferson fumbled for the silver telephone. He pushed in numbers he knew by heart, numbers he had wanted to call a dozen times in the past month, but never had. Not until now.
He tried to breathe, as the phone rang. But then he stopped when he heard it pick up. A womanâs voice. Belleâs voice.
âMr. Goldâs residence. Who is calling?â
Jefferson didnât speak. He didnât breathe. Mrs. Gold knew that he had slept with her husband. He couldnât ask her to put him on the phone. He couldnât even let her know who he was.
He hung up.
With another deep breath, he pulled a book with yellow pages out from a shelf above the desk. He flipped through the thin paper, until he found the name and number he was looking for.
He dialed slowly, taking a breath between each number. He couldnât sound like he was upset. He couldnât show any weakness in front of her.Â
This was a bad idea. This was the worst idea he could have ever come up with. The last time heâd worked with this woman he had watched her murder a helpless servant once she was no longer useful. How could he know that she wouldnât do the same to him?
Maybe by the time he wasnât useful, he would already be in the Discworld. Â
He needed magic. He needed to get out. He needed power. So he called the most powerful person in town. Â
Regina picked up on the third ring. âWho exactly do you think you are to be calling my home at this time of night?â
âYour Majesty,â he said calmly. âThis is Jefferson the realm-jumper. Iâd like to offer my services.âÂ

frazel breakup thread from my twitter! this is mainly on @whatshazeldoing. the other half is on @copraetorzhang.
word count: i have no clue
hazel is talking with frank about their futures. hazel wants to go out and explore the world, while frank seems to stay quiet. hazel is about to ask him what his plans are, hoping that they involve her. she would gladly give up her dreams of traveling to stay with him. she opens her mouth to ask when she hears the words, âi think we should break up.â she doesnât know how to respond. she thought that they would be together forever, that they would be inseparable. she thought he knew how she felt about him, that she would do anything for him. she feels her eyes start to water, ignoring it in favor of staring at frank in absolute shock. she feels tears leak onto her face while she tries to convince frank that this isnât whatâs best for them, that they belong together. he refuse to say anything but âthis is whatâs best for us, trust meâ she doesnât. she will never trust him again.
itâs been a few days. hazel hasnât done anything with her life. thereâs no purpose to her life anymore. why do anything if it gets you nowhere? it makes it worse having to live in the same building as him. she considered going to sleep with the 5th Cohort, but they would ask questions and she isnât ready for that. she wonât ever be ready. so she sleeps in the praetorâs housing with frank on the other side of the building. sheâll think about the times when they shared a room, a bed, and start crying again. she tries to keep quiet so she doesnât wake frank because even now, after he broke her heart she still tries to make sure heâs okay. sometimes though, she canât silence her tears and she knows frank hears them. she hoped the first few times it happened, that frank would come and comfort her, that he had changed his mind. after he stayed on his side though, she didnât bother hoping. just letting her tears fall, and her sobs ricochet around in the night, hoping he felt as terrible as she did. because if he didnât, if he was fine with his decision to break her heart, then she didnât know what she would do with herself. she knew that if she did that, she wouldnât be able to live with herself. on the fourth day, she eventually decides to tell someone. she just doesnât know who to trust. if she tells percy, he will definitely beat up frank. there would be no hesitation. and while that does sound nice, itâs not what she needs. if she told annabeth, sheâd confront frank straight on and end up smacking him once or twice. piper, sheâd almost definitely charmspeak him into dating hazel again. that would be nice and practical, but once it wore off heâd just break up with her again, and that would just hurt all the more. leo would threaten to burn frankâs stick unless he explained why he broke up with her. she was leaning towards that one, mainly because of the fact that frank wouldnât be forced to do anything against his will or end up hurt. jason, jason would just give frank that look he does when heâs disappointed in you. nico, you never can tell with nico. in this case heâs a little too unreliable. she thinks that jason and leo are her best and safest bet. hazel hopes that theyâre free to come over soon, because she really needs them.
hazel is sleeping, at least trying to. sheâs also trying not to cry, but thatâs going better. sheâs learned how to cry silently now.
after leo and jason being unavailable to help, hazel is currently talking to gwen about what happened with frank. she swore she wouldnât tell anyone because itâs a personal issue between her and frank, but she had to talk to someone after leo and jason couldnât come. she got to gwenâs place and immediately broke down. gwen looked like shehad no idea what was happening, but she took her inside, closed the door, and gave her a long hug. she hugged her until hazel was able to calm down again. she wanted to stay in her hug and just melt, but she knew she had to pull herself together. she knew gwen needed an explanation. she sat gwen down and explained the whole thing. when she was done, gwen was livid. she got up and was about to go fight frank, but hazel stopped her. âyou can do whatever you want after iâm gone, but not while iâm here.â gwen reluctantly agreed. hazel left the house, know that gwen was planning something. she didnât know and didnât need to know. after all, she needs to be able to plead plausible deniability.
hazel is packing her bags to leave camp jupiter. seeing as frank hasnât made any moves to keep her around, sheâs decided to follow her dreams of seeing the world. not all of her dreams are coming true though, because sheâd hoped to do this with frank. but seeing as frank has made the decision to âdo whatâs best for themâ and is asking her to go along with it, sheâs made the decision to go on without him. it might break her heart into smaller pieces, but her heart will heal. it might take months, years, decades, maybe it wonât happen until sheâs dead, but it will happen. she knows it will. as sheâs packing though, she sees a small stuffed elephant that frank had gotten her, and she feels ready to cry again. she shakes her head, trying to forget about it, and packs it into the bag, against her better judgment. over the course of an hour, she finds other things that frank had given her, and is in tears by the time she finishes.
hazel is conflicted. she saw the whole conversation between frank, mars, and venus, and now knows why frank broke up with her. sheâs also still hurt by it. he could have just talked to her. she would listen to anything he had to say. for example, she listens when he broke up with her. it was the most painful, but she listened. she was still at odds with herself though. frank had broken her heart to save her heart. she now had suspicions that frank cried every night as well, and he probably did want to come to her like she had wanted to go to him. he was most likely more heartbroken than she is- or is it was? it doesnât matter. he- frank zhang, the kindest and sweetest boy on the planet, son of mars, the changeling lord, broke up with hazel because he didnât want to keep her from her dreams. it was very sweet of him, but it did not have its intended effect. she- hazel levesque, daughter of pluto, the favorite of hecate, had no clue of what to do. she had seen this look in frankâs eyes when he was talking to his dad, but that was it. it wasnât enough to know what his plan was. but, his plan doesnât have to matter to her. he was the one who ended their relationship, not her. she didnât owe him anything anymore. hazel had made her decision. âfrank? are you in here? i need to talk to you about something.â

Merry Christmas everyone!đŤđ Hope you're having an amazing Christmas with the people you love. Here's my Christmas gift for y'all. Solangelo celebrating Christmas đ¤đđ˛đŤ
Ariana Grande- Love Is Everything
Nico woke up the next morning, feeling so much happiness. Sunlight streamed throught the curtains and shone in his eyes. Apollo had already started his day.
Nico felt a hand in his hair and rolled over, meeting with sky blue eyes.
âMerry Christmas.â Will whispered, smiling at him.
âMerry Christmas.â
Nico lifted himself a little bit, resting his chin on Willâs chest, drawing his finger around the tattoo on his left pectoral.
âStill canât believe itâs real.â Nico said, raising on elbow and looking Will in the eyes. âYouâre real. And Iâm finally home. With you.â
Will lay on his back, entangling his long fingers in the black curls.
âA whole month.â He said, cupping Nicoâs face with his hands. âSo many things we can do. But all I want is to lie in the bed like this with you.â
âIâd like to spend the whole Christmas day like this.â Nico said, feeling Willâs scent. He always smelled like morning dew, grass and medicaments.
âBut we have a lot to do.â Nico felt Willâs chest lifting up a little with a sigh. âMomâs been calling since 6 a.m. And I promised Kayla and Austin we will visit camp today. Dad will come too.â
âYeah.â Nico smiled, thinking about Naomi. Will had an amazing mother. âI also need to see Hazel.â
âThen Iâll go and make us breakfast. After that weâll go celebrating Christmas with our families.â
Will tried to get up but Nico was still lying on top of him.
âOr we can cuddle ten more minutes.â
âOkay.â Will chuckled, lying down and kissing Nicoâs forehead. âTen more minutes.â
*
Ten minutes grew into an hour, so now they were driving on the highway to see Willâs mother. And they were late
They were wearing the sweaters Naomi made for them last year: Nicoâs was black, with a skull in a Christmas year and Willâs yellow, reindeers on his sweater were circling around an embroidered bright sun.
Naomi Solace opened the door, wearing a red dress and an apron. Her auburn hair were gathered in a bun.
âBoys!â She cried, hugging them both. She smelled like cookies and chocolate. âCome in, come in. I have so many things to ask you. Nico, howâs there in Venice?â
Nico always loved that atmosphere that was in the air in Willâs childhood house on Christmas. It was special.
Naomi kept asking about Nicoâs college, Venice, Willâs exams. She told them about many Christmas concerts she had. They were talking, laughing, singing.
*
The camp Half-Blood was always quiet on Christmas. There were like twenty people who stayed and Nico loved that calmness around the camp.
Walking to the Big House, Nico had so many memories. Thereâs the lake, where he and Will like to go on a canoe date. Hereâs his cabin, no one lived there for a couple of years. He looked at the dining pavilion, a hole he made in a Christmas day many years ago, the worst day of his life. He looked at the Big House and could almost see teenagers Will and Nico playing this stupid card game with Dionysus on the porch.
Nostalgia flooded his heart and tears appeared in his eyes as he remembered the first day he saw this mazing place. It was ages ago but he remembered it as if it was tomorrow.
Will took his hand and Nico knew that Will had the same sweet ache in his heart.
Chiron galloped on the snowy meadow, greeting them and wishing merry Christmas. Dionysus looked as grumpy as usual but he felicitated them and gave Nico a candy cane. Nico never understood it but Dionysus had grown to care about Nico as if he was his son. Ever since that Tartarus thing⌠No, he told himself, donât think about it.
They met Apollo on the archery spot.
âMy boys!â He hugged Will and kissed the top of Nicoâs head. Nico got used to this, the sun god has been doing this every time he saw Nico after the battle in the tower of Nero. It was sort of a habit.
âYou guys look so good.â Apollo beamed at them. âHow have you been? My boy was probably dying there without his cute little boyfriend on his side.â Apollo petted Nicoâs cheek. Nico shouldâve already get used to it but he still blushed.
After Apollo they met Piper and Leo, who returned to camp to work on some secret project or whatever. Then they met Kayla and Austin and went to the dining pavilion to drink eggnog together.
*
The next stop were Jacksons. Sallyâs greeting was as warm as usual. She almost treated Percyâs demigod friends as if they are her own children. Estelle was already six and she kept clinging to Nico, ranting about everything.
Will and Annabeth were discussing something about colleges, while Percy told Nico about New Rome, the huntresses and all that he missed when he was in Venice.
âThank the fates thereâs no titans, giants and gods who seek for help this year.â Percy said, snatching a cookie from Sallyâs tray. âItâs been calm for years.â
âHey.â Nico slightly hit him on the head. âDonât jinx it, idiota. â
Percy rubbed his head, pouting a little but couldnât argue with di Angelo.
*
They didnât stay for a long time in Hades place. It wasnât in the Underworld, no. He had a luxurious house, little gloomy but snug in the living world. Nico always felt uncomfortable when Demeter was around, so he was happy it was only his father and Persephone.
His stepmother wasnât that horrible now, after all these years she had grown to maybe like Nico and Will, being the son of a son god, had a good effect on her flowers, so she didnât mind them visiting sometimes. As a Christmas present she gave Nico a whole bouquet of roses and he had no idea what to do with them. The bouquet was two big and Will said it was cute how when Nico hold it, his face couldnât be seen and roses almost overbalanced them.
It was the most awkward meeting this Christmas. Hades had gave Nico too many presents: the brand new IPhone that came out like yesterday, new watches (Nico didnât even wear watches) and transferred more money to his bank account. Knowing that Nico, didnât like driving, he solemnly handed over new car keys for Will, staying that the car was already on the parking lot of their house. Hades gave Will a new car every Christmas, since he was 17 and Will didnât know what to do with them all. When they tried to sell one, Hades took offense, so they had to keep them.
Besides the present he kept glaring at Will as if he did something bad and even though theyâve been together for five years now, he asked what was his actual intentions, while Persephone gave Nico a lecture about why they should have more flowers in home.
They walked out of Hadesâ place embarrassed, as usual.
*
The New Rome was, unlike Camp Half-Blood, very animated. The Christmas was in the air.
Huntresses of Artemis came by, having a day of. Nico was happy to chat with Reyna but he kept looking for one particular person in the crowd.
Jason told him heâll come back to America too and will celebrate Christmas in New Rome.
Nico looked around, suddenly yelping when someone hugged him from the back, lifting him from the ground.
âJason!â Nico laughed.
âHey, lil bro.â Jason smiled, petting his head. âHello, Will.â He gave Will a high-five.
âHow are you? Howâs London.â Nico asked, when they sat down on the bench.
âEverythingâs cool. A little busy, though. I wonât be able to stay for too long.â Jason answered.
âWell,â Will faced Jason. âYou definitely have to visit us before you leave.â
âYeah.â Nico said. âAnything new in yourâŚpersonal life?â Nico asked curiously.
Jason laughed softly.
âMaybe.â Nico squinted at him. âCome on, you know Iâd tell you if it was serious.â But Jason looked slightly embarrassed. âUgh, so⌠Did you guys see Hazel already?â
âNah.â Nico said. âReyna said she and Frank are a little busy now.â
âI wonder what are they busy with.â Will chuckled, making both Jason and Nicoâs eyes widen.
âWill!â
*
A half an hour later, Hazel and Frank finally walked out of their praetor house. Frank squeezed Nico and Will in a bear hug, Hazel kissed Nico on the check and hugged Will.
âGods, Iâve missed you.â She said, taking Nicoâs hand. âHowâs college?â
They walked together, Nico talking about his year in Venice, Will about his exams and stuff. Frank told them that heâs been planning to go back to Canada next year. He wants to join an army.
âReally?â Nico was a little shocked. âBut what about your praetor position.â
Frank looked around, observing the camp as the stood on the hill.
âThereâs a lot of worthy guys. Lavinia, for example.â He sighed. âWe were just thinking about trying to have our own life, you know? No war, no gods.â
Will looked at Hazel.
âSo youâre leaving too?â
Hazel looked a little sad but a gleam lightened in her eyes.
âI want to go to college. In Canada. Weâre planning to move together.â She looked at Nico, as if expecting his reaction. He took her hand.
âThatâs great! Iâm sure you guys weâll be fine.â
Hazel smiled at him, resting her curly head on her brotherâs shoulder.
*
They drove back home in silence, a warm feeling in their hearts.
âYou know.â Nico started, looking at Will. âFive years ago I couldnât imagine itâll be like this.â
Will quickly glanced at him, then returning his eyes on the road.
âWhat do you mean?â
Nico sighed, closing his eyes.
âI have everything now, you know. And it scares me, how fast the nights are changing. I still remember the Battle of Manhattan, as if it was yesterday. And here we are now. And all this changes, they are⌠Scary. Me living in Venice, you here, Hazel and Frank leaving to Canada. Even Percy and Annabeth are planning to move somewhere else. And what if with all these changes⌠weâll lose each other?â
Will removed one hand from the steering wheel, resting it on Nicoâs lap. He slowed down the car a little and looked at Nico.
âI know what you mean. Ever since you went to college, itâs been bothering me. But you know what?â Will smiled, squeezing Nicoâs hand. âNo matter what, we are family. All of us. This Christmas all I can think about is family. My mom, dad, siblings. You. You and your friends, your sister. Even your father.â Will chuckled. âWe all are family. And it doesnât matter where we live and what we do. Weâre always together.â
Nico fell silent for a moment, thinking about Willâs words. Then he smiled.
âRight.â He rubbed Willâs hand with a thumb, feeling his warmth. âFamily.â
So many years Nico spent looking for something, that will make him feel calm. Happy. He had friends, sister. He met Will. And on this Christmas evening he finally found the right word. They were together, no matter what. Jason, Reyna, Percy. Willâs parents and Nicoâs parents. Hazel and Frank. And, most important, Will. He had them all. They were his actual family.
Nico closed his eyes, feeling drowsy as the car wiggled a little. He used to wonder how his life would go if Bianca was with him. But now it didnât matter. All the things heâs been through was perfectly safe in his heart and he loved them. His life led him to something wonderful.
Eight years passed since the worst Christmas of his life. And today was probably the best Christmas heâd ever had.
Yes, it didnât matter if he was in Venice, Will in America and Hazel in Canada. It didnât matter where his family was. As long as love lived in his heart, they are together.
Nico opened his eyes, glancing at Will, who was concentrating on the road. He smiled, closing his eyes again.
Family, he thought as he fell asleep, still feeling Willâs hand in his own.
(Thank you guys for supporting and reading my blog. I've started it few month ago and there's already so many of you! Thank you so much đđđđ Merry Christmas guys

Scars - Chapter 4
-- Trigger Warning: Mentions of self-harm and bad parenting. Read at your own risk.
Chapter 4 - End It Cleanly Mclean
Piper flopped onto her immaculately made bed after her morning run with her mother, rumpling up the covers a little bit and enjoying the brief moments of silence before-
âModels do not flop onto their beds, daughter, they sit on the edge daintily.â A saccharine sweet voice lilted from outside Piperâs bedroom.
Piper stifled her groan and got up quietly, remaking her bed and smoothing her hands over the glossy silk sheets. She made sure not to miss a spot, because her mother, the amazing model Aphrodite Mclean, was no doubt watching her every move from the doorway.
âIâm sorry, mother, â Piper said quietly, looking down at her feet that her mother commented were âtoo bigâ to be from a woman, âI wonât do it again.â
She looked up and locked eyes with her mother, the most beautiful, and cruelest, person Piper had ever met. That one thought of rebelliousness died away, and Piper forcefully looked back down respectfully at her feet.
Aphrodite had silky black hair that made its way down her back in ringlets, with only the most expensive products used on her luscious locks. With chocolate brown eyes like those of a feline. She was thin as a toothpick, with a curvy, full body which attracted a lot of men, and sometimes even women. Aphroditeâs skin was fair and spotless, her nails and clothes always complimenting each other and the rest of her. Piper really wished she hadnât inherited her mother's insane beauty.
Her mother did another once over of Piperâs bedroom, trying to find something to critique. Not finding any flaws, she pursed her lips, flipped her hair over her shoulder and promptly left the room, shutting the door behind her.
Piper let out a breath she didnât know she was even holding, and it made her plop back down onto her bed and bury her head in her hands.
Why couldnât I have just gone with Dad?
~~~~~~~~~~
Tristan Mclean met Aphrodite Ouranos at a theatre gathering. He was immediately struck by her beauty and charm, and she seemed to like him just as much. They started going out after a week, and dated for a couple months before getting married.
After they had Piper, Tristan and Aphrodite made it big, Tristan with a high-paying acting career which required him to move around a lot, and Aphrodite with a modeling job. Both of the jobs needed a lot of traveling, but someone needed to stay and take care of Piper, the beautiful baby who inherited her motherâs beauty and her fatherâs smile and hair.
So while Tristan went on world tours and visited iconic cities and landmarks, Aphrodite would stay at home and take care of Piper. Needless to say, she hated the job, and wanted to dump her daughter in an orphanage to be taken care of by someone else, but then an idea struck her.
If she could raise Piper to be exactly like her, independent and flawless, it would help Aphroditeâs modeling and parenting. She was wrong of course, but she obviously didnât think that. The result of her carelessness was a five year old running around a large empty estate, eating whatever she wanted and doing whatever she pleased.
There were many, many times when Piper had been left alone for long periods of time, and she did learn to be independent, but vowed to never become like her mother. Once Piper hit her middle school years, Aphrodite realized just how beautiful her daughter was, even more so, than Aphrodite herself. That was a problem.
So she shipped Piper off to a ladies academy for middle schoolers, and when Piper came back the summer before her first year at high school, she was⌠exactly the same. No manners had been changed, no clothing choice had been improved, nothing.
Thatâs when Aphrodite took the manner into her own manicured fingers. She critiqued Piper on anything and everything she did, even if it was the slightest misstep or a small snort that escaped her mouth. At the start, Piper rebelled against her, but Aphrodite oppressed her so much that Piper gave in and listened to her mother's every whim, and stayed quiet through every admonishment.
That was what made Piper start cutting.
It was small at first, just a little glance at a knife or razor and wondering how it would feel against her skin. Then, light traces with the sharp blades on her wrist, seeing how light she could go to draw blood. What pushed past her tipping point was when Piper was idly drawing the knife across her arm, not enough to see blood, but enough to feel a small sting, and her mother walked into the bathroom to see what was taking her so long.
She took one cold look at the blade, and the marks on Piperâs arm and left the bathroom. Piper stared after her, but when she came back, it wasnât with a hug, or words of help to drag Piper out of the world of a depression.
It was a razor. A pink razor with a bejeweled hilt.
Aphrodite held it out to Piper and said only two words: âUse that.â
Since that day, Piper seemed to enjoy when her mother would leave her alone to do her modeling, because Piper had the day to cut herself happy.
~~~~~~~~~~
Now donât get her wrong. Piper wasnât suicidal for two reasons. The first was her father and her friends. She tried to resent her father for leaving her alone with her monster of a mother, but he was too kind for her to hate him, and the couple days a year he came and stayed with them were the best. And her friends, well, they were the only people who kept her sane while she was here. Annabeth, Reyna, Thalia, Leo. They were the best friends anybody could ask for, and they supported her whenever she felt sad. They didnât know about the cutting.
The second was that she was too cowardly to try to take her life. Afraid of hurting her friends. Afraid that it would all be for nothing.
So she didnât do anything farther than cutting.
Piper realized that thinking about the past and sitting doing nothing but dawdling was really unproductive. She took out her phone and went to check if there were any new messages, and she saw a text from Thalia. So she replied.
(AN: Thalia, Piper)
Today - 11:34 AM
hey Pipes
hey Thals
wassup
Oh nothing, just trying to get away from my tyrannical mother. Normal day.
nothing much, you?
iâm here with my brother at one of my dadâs interview things
Brother?
Piper couldnât remember Thalia mentioning anything about siblings before. And she did the normal thing and asked Thalia about it.
you have a brother?
It was a long time before Thalia responded, but when she did, Piper snatched up the phone to see her response.
yeah
Piper felt betrayed, she thought they told each other everything. But then again, she had no room to talk.
excuse me, but how come youâve never told me about him?
never came up
fine, you win, for now. show me a pic?
Thalia sent a picture of a blond-haired boy with the bluest eyes Piper had ever seen. The thing was, she knew this blond-haired boy.
It was Jason Grace, the only person that even came close to Annabethâs record setting grades. Once he had beaten her by a percent on a English test, and Annabeth was fuming for days, while Piper and the rest of their friends snickered at her back. But Piper never connected the dots, like how he and Thalia had the same last name.
He was also in her math class during Freshman year, and he sat two seats to her right. Piper could remember clearly some moments of that class.
Like when the teacher would ask the class a question, and Jasonâs hand would be the only one up so she called on him. He would bite his lower lip and read out the answer in a confident but quiet voice, like he didnât want anyone to notice him. Then, once Jason got the question right, his posture would straighten, in a proud way. His eyes would light up like a cloudless day sky and his lips would stretch into a smile, making the scar on his upper lip appear more prominently. Jason would push the glasses up the bridge of his nose, and sit back in his chair, satisfied.
One second. Two.
What. Was. That. Piper shook her head and felt her cheeks become hot. She barely knew Jason, yet she had been paying so much more attention to him than she thought she was. Idly, she wondered if his glasses and the tattoo of glasses she had on her shoulder were related in any way.
Suddenly dizzy, she remembered that Thalia was waiting for an answer. With her thoughts off somewhere else, she mindlessly typed a response to Thaliaâs question. The good news, it was the truth. The bad news, Thalia would never let her live this down.
After she felt her head clear, she brought her attention back to the conversation and her eyes widened.
oh, that cute boy you sit with at lunch sometimes? Heâs really good looking.
âCrap!â Piper yelled, for once not even afraid that her mother will come in and lecture her about the dangers of swearing.
She could just imagine Thalia cackling her witchy laugh wherever she was. Piper started to type in a message to tell Thalia to please, please not tell her brother about that message when a new message popped up at the top.
Piper, honey, I am leaving for my photoshoot now. Please keep the house clean... and no guests. -Mother >:(
Perfect, her mother is gone, now she can go through with that brunch that she planned with her friends. Then she remembered Thalia. Stupid ADHD, hopping from one topic to the other.
It was too late though, because Thalia has already replied.
yes, he is, and heâs also here looking at our conversation.
Piper felt herself blush scarlet red, and she bet anyone could see it, even on her darker complexion. Now she was in for it, she would never be able to face Thalia or Jason ever again. And once Thalia told the rest of their friendsâŚ
Piper stood up and started getting ready for the brunch with her friends she planned. Both mentally and physically. Gods, Leo was going to have such a field day when he found out about this.
Well, the routine was only just starting. ____________________________________________________________
This chapter was fun to write haha
