❝ guess you've got me there. ❞   a soft chuckle follows warm, closed eyes. it's a fair argument, one he had anticipated when initiating the conversation. that being said, he believed their reasons varied, and his piqued curiosity questioned to what extent it did.
making himself comfortable at the edge of a desktop, soren leans back and crosses his arms.   ❝ too much origami? ❞   he teases, cheeks warming when pearly whites spread wide.   ❝ or... are you working yourself too hard? ❞   slouching along the table, shoulder pillaring his upper body, he sighs before continuing.   ❝ me? well... i'm reading up on our serial killer. their pattern's a shitshow, so i wanted to stay where i wouldn't be distracted. could help one another, if you don't mind? ❞

please give us an unreasonably long answer about what your favorite classical monstery trait is, why you like it, and your favorite examples of it please please pl
i dont know if this is like a classic monstery trait or even rly what that entails but um im rly into like parasitism and/or monsters whose supposed body is actually just a host.
parasites used to be a big special interest of mine as a kid and even tho it isnt as strong as it was then i feel like that interest has sort of mutated and fused with my current interest in horror (which feels appropriate doesnt it) applying real life parasite logic to monsters sort of forces you to think about stuff like: what does this monster need to survive? how do their habits serve that need? and providing the monster in question is a sapient creature, how does it feel to be something whose existence demands leeching off of other living beings? physically and psychologically. how would that affect the way this creature relates to the world around them?
it also sorta gets me like reverse engineering some of my monsters. "i want this one to have a cool retractable proboscis under their tongue" ok cool now what purpose does that aspect of its biology serve? why would something evolve like this? if it uses it for feeding, what does that indicate about the food source and the method for feeding? and how does that affect their other behaviors?
obviously monsters dont always have to adhere to the rules of reality, but i like when they sorta. pay respect to them. creatures whose biology is subtly reminiscent of real life animals that we already know instinctively spell bad news for humans have sort of an instant advantage in the scariness department just because of that connection. which i think is neat-o!
theres also lots of potential there for exploring some fun body horror stuff (big fav of mine) as well as imo a kind of transhumanist existentialism. like ok if i am a creepy lil monster bug whose biological imperative is to burrow into a living human body and rewire their brain to help me feed and procreate, what is my relationship to this body really? (again assuming the creature in question is sapient ofc)
is it my home? my ride? my friend? unwilling friend maybe but maybe im also pumping said humans brain full of dopamine whenever they help me. does that make us friends? does that make the relationship mutually beneficial? or does that make me an oppressor, overwriting their will to fulfill my needs? and what about my will? arent i, this hungry little insect, just as much a slave to my own bodys demands as them? if, like so many species, i hatched into this body, warmed and nurtured by it, is it my mother? whats the meaningful distinction between me, the controlling parasite, dominating yet fragile, who would die without the flesh i inhabit, and my host, a mind trapped inside the limited mortal flesh it was born to spend its entire existence trapped within?
aaand so on and so forth. honestly im not even a transhumanist i just think the philosophy gives us some cool thought experiments.
anyway my favorite real life parasite is the leucochloridium (even tho i constantly forget its longass name) which infects snails and makes their eyestalks pulse and flash colors to attract predators so it can get eaten, which it needs in order to continue onto the next phase of its life cycle. im not an expert or anything i might be muddying the facts. i just think that shits crazy. natures crazy.
anywayy x2! um um if this interests u i guess i recommend the masters of horror episode "sick girl", "peeps" and "the last days" by scott westerfeld (to be fair i havent read these since middle school and idk how well they hold up but like westerfelds stuff usually goes p hard regardless), "bloodchild" by octavia butler, aaaaand i guess my short story "daja vu"! wink!
thansk for coming to my ted talk happy autism to all and to all a good night

what are some roles that have been largely changed for cityrune? since you said queen was an influencer now :]
hi ty for asking me im vibrating. havent gotten to talk about this au now for three years and now that chapter 2 is like real and this time i can like........draw occasionally and i have more understanding of nuance...... [grips table] [screams]
this isnt quite what you asked but heres what's everyone from chapter 1 has been Up To with a little bit of context (and under a read more bc it got LENGTHY):
kris - professional stay at home teen (they live w/ asgore n help run the flower shop sometimes. this decision was entirely bc i dont like toriel). was wrongly diagnosed w Sudden Soul Rejection when they were incredibly young and given an experimental transplanted soul as a replacement. it works for them fine, give or take having to see gaster once a month for checkups. but sometimes the soul makes them skittish n decides they're going to sit in front of the pc and play 30 consecutive hours of a certain simulation game and not even let them drown people in the pool. if it were entirely up to them, they'd be like. passing out on the sofa to documentaries about bigfoot. or practicing cool knife tricks to impress their friends at their next tabletop meetup
- EDITED IN: the soul is kind of their friend. they are wearing a hypothetical get along shirt. most of the time, they agree on actions and things to do. tends to refer to themself + their soul as we/us which originally was just something they did in their head but they kept slipping in speech/text n just became a Thing of how they talk. switches to 'I/Me' whenever smth is wrong.
- also edited in: they believe the soul they have is their original soul bc nobody has told them otherwise. whenever theyre like 'oh yeah we think about our soul n view it as a separate entity to us like. all the time. it likes to hurt if we make too many choices it doesn't seem to like and kind of forces us to be a toned down version of what we want to be but thats just how souls are haha' and everyone is like.... 'Hey Kris That's Really Not How It Is.' theyre like. 'huh. gonna ignore that for now' - this was going to be a plot point
toriel - head of H0MEWOR1D (H01)'s department of education; kind of lost her roots as a simple math teacher as she was pushed into a lot of power she didn't even really seek out. divorced asgore over some miscommunications in their relationship; also loosely as a result of grief from asriel's death
asgore - the same. runs a lil flower/gift shop. people come in more to talk with him than to buy flowers most of the time, though
asriel Flowey - he's back in flower form, thanks to the government an accident. causes a lot of technology glitches wherever he goes, and wants revenge. isn't sure how to go about it. asriel "died" around 8 years before the story takes place and kris still misses him and refuses to even THINK about even the IDEA of calling someone their sibling after what happened, just in case it somehow happens a second time
susie - more of the same really. she spends most of her time either at grillby's (she's sort of become his assistant n helps with opening/closing. it just happened) or getting into low-stakes trouble w/ kris
noelle - she's in the city's equivalent of college and shes so tired. shes So Abysmally Tired n got kinda pushed 2 follow in her mom's footsteps. she's rarely around anymore except through text or on monsters & mages (dnd) night. (however.........she will come back w/ a long break n hang out w everyone again)
berdly - tbh i didnt even consider berdly when i made the au initially. idk what he's doing. probably in a similar situation to noelle??? canonically got kicked out of the M&M group due to clashes w/ other players but lurks in their group chat to posts memes sometimes
didnt rly think of any other of kris' classmates (+ their families) after ch1 and probably will continue to not, until chs 3-5 come out and i gotta whip up roles and histories for like. a lotta guys all of a sudden. i also forgot about noelle's parents
sans - runs a convenience store that everyone kind of thinks is a front, but also it has really cheap snacks and the local teens make a point of stopping there after school. so essentially, more of the same papyrus - similar to ut. is a very polite and sweet boy but you'll know when he's coming
grillby - he's back. he runs a bar like back in ut but the cozy vibes and weird-for-a-bar hours keep attracting kids who need parents, so half of his menu is comprised of overly sweet mocktails. usually only frequented by monsters
QC - same as usual. has a "rivalry" with grillbz but, theyre besties and have a book club
mettaton - he's real and he's back. he's similar to how he is back in ut w/ his EX body. likes to hang out at grillby's and talk to unsuspecting fans. has a show for everything
napstablook - similar to how they are in ut. helps mtt with making music sometimes. doesn't leave the house too often, but spends a lot of time posting on undernet
undyne - unfortunately. more of the same. she is a cop in the monster district. i am also upset by this but couldn't think of anything better for her
alphys - a doctor studying under dr. gaster in the hopes she'll one day take over his research. she spends most of her time as a nurse with a bigger title, though, and blocks out the weirdness of her job with anime.
gaster - weird guy. H01's top soul researcher and resident House wannabe. trying to manufacture the ultimate soul that can be controlled with simple internal switches, but so far he's only had 1 (very limited) success with a certain human. monsters just melt, and darkners just sorta......get weird... he's onto Something, though.
ralsei - lonely boy with some very strange hobbies. popular on UnderNet for poetry, baking videos, and general cryptid vibe. is the DM for the monsters & mages group (also seems to think everything is actually very fine in H01 when it is very much not)
lancer - about the same. professional Round Boy. lives w/ rouxls full time. follows susie around like a lost puppy and calls himself her "underling."
rouxls - runs a hotel/casino kind of deal where the objective Bad Guys hang out, and usually ends up doing any of the spade king's paperwork.
spade king - mafia godfather. kind of a dick. don't play cards with him
seam - works with the spade king as his right hand cat more or less because they have for a lot of years and are in that 'sunk cost fallacy' zone. thinks of retiring to a quiet life in the monster section of town like, daily
jevil - used to work with the spade king, but got imprisoned for Crimes. got weird after The Accident (separate from asriel's accident)
temmies (all) - dont really get mentioned except offhandedly but they run the monster space station. so far, are the only monsters who have ever been to space.
as far as chapter 2 goes:
yeah i dont have much so far for characters. in the original version of the au i accidentally made darkners as a whole just kinda..... not great? like all sorts of weird organized crime ties n sort of going out of their way to be A Problem to the city (not even in like. a revolution way. in a working against them but with the same goals kinda way). with the whole context it worked At The Time, bc i just had the spade king to look to as a villain, and also in this au the darkners are just trying to survive a world that ultimately was not built for them (that humans think they own, and monsters sort of... seeing this and wondering what it'll mean for them whichever one wins), but w/ new info abt how the dark world works n more guys to work with i want to kind of. edit the vibe a bit. like yea darkners will ultimately do whatever it takes to take over H01, but maybe in a better way than like. idk. all this. it doesnt have to be peaceful or anything it just has to be more adaptable as we meet more kinds of darkners
however yeah i thought up 'queen as some sort of childless mommy blogger/influencer' and that completely revived all memory i had of this au. she should be on mtt's talkshow. also she sells collectible wine glasses w/ her likeness
spamton is another one of gaster's failed soul experiments, but he hasn't melted yet, and seems............fine? sort of. so he hasn't gotten decommissioned yet. he does want to give you malware tho. hot monster singles in your area n all that
im blanking on the rest of the guys but i hope any of this was comprehensible

today on: i think the most about DN and my DNkids when i am away from the actual game i think its my body’s way of coping with being away from its children LMAO but eh just rambles about how pvp/pve works in my storyworld, weapons, and how lei is not op :c
.. in my DN story, or universe, or storyworld, i like to think that adventurers, though maybe skilled in fighting monsters, are mostly not that skilled in fighting against people. because the way you handle your weapons, and analyse situations, plan strategies, and use your skills greatly differs when you fight mobs vs fighting actual people. its also why my blade dancer, laythe, has an edge to him whereby he has never lost his battles and ends up killing every single person he wins against.
its like... uh.. i imagine its because adventurers are brought up and mainly trained to fight, kill and protect against monsters, not people? mind you that that is how i see DN adventurers in my storyworld. typical mmorpg setting.
the colosseum is not entirely different in that concept. you could be the no 1 pvp player (colosseum fighter), and be absolutely shit at fighting mobs. i got this idea from the game itself; how purely PVP people are sometimes ungeared bc why would they be if they only fight comp on, so if they go PVEing theyd prolly have a really hard time grasping mechs. and purely PVE people themselves would have a hard time with PVP as well. of course there still would be the occasional people who are both God in pve and pve; i still dont have a DNkid representing that category yet... hm.
to add into my “people dont rly know how to effectively fight other people!” thing, well, in my storyworld too, you CANNOT simply unsheathe your weapon in town. you’d get caught by the royal guards or idk if they have police in SH or anything and get sued. we have civilians in the town guys!! you cant just pull out your mace!! there are serious repercussions..!! if you fight in town thats even worse (esp if u use your weapons)- you can get jail time. and the highest crime of it all is if you kill a person. big no-no. just no. i got this idea from the fact that towns are a no-skill zone. :thonk: so ya people fighting isnt the norm here. you go to the colosseum for that.
heck i even thought of how people have like.. licenses to carry their weapons. like when you graduate from your base classes you go through this formal.. registration.. thingy... idk what its called im not educated enough to know what this is but yea adventurers do go through a formal system whereby they register themselves, their classes, their weapons... etcetc. like uh, bjolne. first class chaser, second class raven. weapons: scimitar, a pair of crooks, shurikens, smoke bombs, small daggers, (lists all his gazillion weapons here). and everytime they change their weapons or upgrade their gears they have to also update the... people.. in charge of that department..? they probably have a form for this or something. and i thought about how most weapons would be made in town (see: blacksmithes) and so would have their own unique trait that therefore would differentiate it as being the only one? like how guns have their serial numbers or something like that. so that if the owner shoots someone the police can track it back to them? again, not knowledgeable enough to explain it sufficiently or attach proper terms for this. but theyd use this system too because i like to think that sometimes adventurers lose their weapons in dungeons or anywhere due to being injured and having to leave immediately, or for whatever reason, so if anyone found that weapon you can trace it back to the owner. also like the gun example, if a weapon was used as a crime tool then it can also be tracked to the adventurer. its why saints (or just normal doctors) are quite important in this aspect, because well, finn, at least, knows to look for these kind of stuff when hes working with injured patients. hes trained to recognize wounds made by mobs and those made by other people, aka other adventurers, or other weapon-wielding people. if its true they were inflicted by other adventurers then he has the rights to notify the authorities for an investigation, because harming another person is illegal >:c!!!
all in all i am just saying this because i thought about how people might think that my blade dancer, laythe is way overpowered or some gary sue because i always emphasize on the fact that he has.. never lost. hes not overpowered. its just that in my DN storyworld, the setting just so happens that people are not used to fighting other people, especially with the intent to kill. sure they have the colosseum to brawl it out, but the way i set my DN storyworld colosseum is that you absolutely cannot kill a person in there. its simply a place to fight to your heart’s contents but you cant kill or be killed there. kinda like real world boxing matches. can you punch and beat the shit outta people without getting sued? hell yes! can you kill them? bloody hell no!!
in colosseum your damage input and output is controlled by idk some unseen power and also rules (see: compensation on pvp) and though you can get quite seriously injured, you cannot die in the colosseum. if a battle gets too bad the match gets stopped. heck, i even made an entire batch of OCs to be colosseum medics (fantasia c’esthall and her party) on standby to show how much i want people to know that HELLO IN MY DN WORLD YOU CANT DIE IN THE COLOSSEUM
so if you think of how my storyworld was set, it makes sense a bit. you have laythe, who is very proficient in using his class skills for murdering people bc hes... laythe, and most unlucky adventurers who comes across him simply just doesnt know how to... counter that. people are nothing like dungeon monsters. you need to have a very specific skillset for those two entirely different things. you put a Moonlord who his entire life has been training and fighting minotaurs and suddenly hes pitted off against an insanely fast and ruthless Blade Dancer who likely stabs and strangles people for a living. that moonlord, though he might be a very strong moonlord, has no chance. he’ll literally be a moonlord because his soul would be dancing in the moon when half his head gets sliced from laythe’s chakrams.
(also i should probably mention that both laythe and raythe dont live in town. they live deep in the forest/dungeon. raythe chose the place bc its quite secluded... so theyre not really adventurers, theyre just weapon-wielding people... in a way.. neither of them have registered weapons too. illegal kids.)

i just finished watching the singapore episode of criminal minds beyond borders and holy shit is it PAINFUL. everything in it seemed borderline racist. yes, singapore has a majority chinese population, but it honestly seems like the writers jumped to assume that singapore?? is in china??? OUR FIRST LANGUAGE IS ENGLISH!! NOT MANDARIN!!! people don’t usually go around speaking PURE mandarin, we use a mixture of languages and dialects. and even with that, our mandarin sounds drastically different than what was spoken in the episode, it’s v obvious that the actors were speaking w a prc accent.
putting the gross oriental music that plays whenever there’s stock footage of singapore (or ANY SCENE, REALLY) and incorrect “singaporean proverb” (it’s greek apparently) aside, the amount of thought and research put into the episode is so clearly lacking. LIKE: don’t call it singapore pd bc who tf calls it singapore police department, we’re not like america w their naming systems eg. nypd and lapd. ALSO they didn’t shoot any of the scenes in sets/places that look REMOTELY like singapore, and a quick google search of what our landscape is really like isn’t that hard fam. . . most of the shots look stereotypically asian, like a fucking game of how many chinese lanterns can we get in this episode ! they didn’t film any of it in singapore OR hire any singaporean actors, which makes NO SENSE?? the man who played a singaporean police officer fluctuated between an american, cantonese, and SLIGHT (VERY POOR) singaporean accent. singaporean accents are p distinct and unique to singapore/malaysia, so NAILING it is essential— it makes sense to hire someone native!!!! but ofc not, damn. at least he wasn’t dropping ‘la’s like westerners usually do to try to speak singlish, , jesus, ,
BEYOND ALL THAT BS, the most excruciating part of the episode has to be the focus on how strict and UNJUST singapore’s laws are. they start by saying that sg is the land of banned chewing gum, and highlighting instances where the govt has been particularly harsh on foreign nationals committing crime on our soil. they even managed to make how we have less than 10 murders a year sound BAD???? yes it’s fuckin true that we have many regulations/laws, but that doesn’t mean our govt has a stick up their ass and is unfair?? fam, there will always be a tradeoff between slightly stricter governance and safety. there’s a reason why our crime rates are low and we let the sg govt be in complete control of our protection and security. the girl in the damn ep broke A FEW MAJOR LAWS and managed to ONLY get banned from entering sg and they’re saying “oh poor thing” IM? just bc we do things differently where we’re from doesn’t give y’all a right to shit all over our justice system. pls dont impose your beliefs/ideals on us, ty.
tl;dr: please do your research before trying to do an episode on sg. damn, y’all look fucking stupid and rly aren’t doing us justice.

what IS your advice on cat food? because i think mine are becoming less tolerant toward the common brands bought in stores
THIS GOT LONG SO IMA PUT IT UNDER A CUT
Tumblr media
well my first bit of advice is if youre buying the cheapest foods, you get what you pay for. Stuff like meow mix, you may as well be feeding them potato chips and candy for every meal. Ways to check your cats dietary health include:
Activity levels. Are they moving and playing? Or are they sluggish? (Cats do nap a lot throughout the day, which is normal. But you SHOULD be able to get them to play, and they shouldnt be “dragging” in their movements around the house.) Often, elder cats will be slow and sluggish anyways, but cats can live anywhere from 16-20+ years when healthy, so unless theyre getting up there, this shouldn’t be happening.
Stool. Gross, yes, but important! Their poops should be solid, dark brown and come out in couple inch turds. Slimy exteriors, soft stools, blood, pale or otherwise strange coloration, or small little turdlets are often signs of health issues, many of which can be solved just by feeding them better/different food! If you catch it, watch them using the litter box. They shouldnt appear to be struggling, and generally should be getting it all out at once instead of stopping partway, choosing a new spot, and starting back up. Little farts are okay, but you shouldnt be hearing really wet juicy PLBBTS--these are usually accompanied by slimy or loose poops.
Puking. But cats puke! That’s normal, you say. No, not really. Hairballs are a fact of life a lot of the time (it’ll look kinda like a turd) but throwing up their food or just fluid are bad signs. Sometimes they just eat too fast and throw up after (theres neat little toys for that that can force them to have to eat slower if thats the case), but it could also be a sign that their current food upsets their stomach or, worst case scenario, they’re actually sick. If they’re puking frequently, or especially EVERY DAY, bring them to the vet, just in case.
even if your cat isnt exhibiting any issues in these departments, switching to better foods if you have them on cheap shit is still a good idea, because as they grow older it can add up and end up fucking them pretty bad--that was the case of our old family cat, unfortunately.
brands that dont use poultry by products or grains in their food are best. Poultry by-products are bad for em, and cats cant even digest grains, so thats essentially filler that adds no nutritional value. I use blue buffalo; they have some diff formulas including for sensitive stomachs which is good for cats who have taken to vomiting but arent sick as per a vet visit. (theres some controversy from a few years ago abt BB actually using chicken by products but im noooot sure the validity of that or if its still relevant in 2017. Ive noticed a significant increase in energy and overall health in my cats since switching to it, regardless.) I like to switch flavors every purchase because my cats get bored of the same one and will stop eating if i get the same kind over and over--other cats can be finicky and not eat if you DO switch flavors. You gotta figure out your cat’s preferences through trial and error tbh. and ffs--dont let your cats eat people food. and DONT give them milk! cats are actually lactose intolerant, even if they seem to like it, and it can cause them digestive distress, pain, and diarrhea.
wet/canned food is a great thing to give em, at least every other day or so if you can afford to integrate it, because cats dont really have a great sense of thirst and can tend to get dehyrated (if it’s pink, check to see if the color of their nose has paled--its a way to tell theyre not getting enough water before the point of being able to tell via the skin pinch test). Ideally you’d be feeding them only canned food but thats not really an option for more budgeted folks, so make sure theres clean water available to them at ALL TIMES. We have a big bowl in the kitchen, but I also keep a smaller one in my bedroom because my cats spend most of their day in here with me, and its definitely increased the amount they drink per day, because its right there for em. Hydration is super important, because male cats especially are prone to urinary tract issues, some of which get deadly within hours!
weird thing here; obviously, i recommend listening to your vet’s advice, but sometimes their food recommendations are... fishy. I brought my boy cat in for a check because he was showing signs of pee problems (going to the litter box and nothing coming out over and over, licking his penis excessively, growling and getting aggressive at us if we approached or touched him while he was showing this behavior). He had a bladder infection from stress (we had recently moved) and needed some antibiotics--which i gave him, of course! However, the vet ALSO said i should switch him to the brand of food they stocked there, a special “urinary health” formula which--she even said herself--was essentially just saltier to encourage him to drink more water. This is where things become suspicious. There were several signs throughout the office that this company was financially supporting them--calendars of the brand, little standee things on the front desk, advertisements on the walls. Even the hours label on the front door had the brand logo on it. She essentially was obligated to pitch me that--and i cant afford to buy overpriced crap food that just has extra salt in it. Be wary, is all i can say. He hasnt had issues since, without me switching, so it was really not necessary. (**HOWEVER! sometimes cats develop special permanent issues such as diabetes and are recommended PRESCRIPTION foods you cant just pick up at places like petsmart. If this happens, LISTEN TO YOUR VET!**)
now a big one; indoor-only cats are going to be healthiest. I love cats, but theyre pretty stupid, and when they’re allowed outdoors they eat weird shit they shouldnt and drink water thats not clean, which can make them sick and discourage them from eating the food you provide. Plus, the outside world can be very dangerous for your cats in many other ways (dogs, cars, predatory animals, mean humans, other cats) and to add to it all, cats will literally just kill wildlife for fun, which is really bad for the local ecosystem.
and most importantly over everything--PORTION CONTROL. Do NOT free-feed (leaving a full bowl of food out all day, refilling it as needed.) Your cat WILL eat too much and get obese, its basically just a fact of life. Cute as BODE cats are, obesity is dangerous for cats just like it is in humans--and it takes a lot less weight to get there. Our old cat developed diabetes and pancreatitis from free feeding cheap food and it was a huge, expensive mess that ultimately my father refused to pay to treat, and the poor baby was dehydrated, barely eating, vomiting constantly and ended up dying in misery. My tactic is one 3/4 cup scoop per cat bowl in the morning and again at night (for wet food, one small can, or half a large one). I know that sounds like very little to eat, but a lot of the time theres still some food in their bowls by dinner. They actually dont need to eat as much as you’d think, especially when they get older and inevitably lazier. (Kittens are a different matter altogether, however, as they tend to be more hyper. Make sure to buy KITTEN formula foods until theyre 1 year old so they get the appropriate amount of nutrients to keep up with their activity and support their healthy growth!) If you feed wet, pick up and empty the bowls after a couple hours and make sure to wash the bowls after each meal. Leftover food/residue is a breeding ground for bacteria, which obviously is no good. By then, the cat should have eaten their fill anyways. If not... they’ll learn to quick enough, lol.
of course, if you have your cat on good foods, are going with everything ive spoken about here, youve tried different flavors, but theyre still behaving oddly about their food? see a vet. cats dont cry and tell you when theyre sick--in fact, cats will purr when theyre in pain, which we humans then perceive as happy healthy cat. they could have serious, invisible problems, and the only ways for us to notice are often little things like that. better safe than sorry!
THIS WAS RLY LONG SORRY but hopefully it helps !!!
