I've come to realise that as much as I'm completely fine with formula and will happily enjoy formulaic stories, I just really dislike the standard romance outline that includes the Second Act Break Up. I hate break ups after the definitive get together. I want it to be When You Know You Know and there never being any doubt that this is The Person no matter how much doubt there is about practical problems you might have to face to be together.
Internal obstacles are for pre-mutual feelings acknowledgement. After the mutual feelings acknowledgement, I want external obstacles. And if anyone tries any post-get together noble idiot bullshit where they pretend not to love the other person for x (usually stupid) reason, I want the other person to see through it basically immediately. A misunderstanding should not be able to break up the main couple after they have an established connection. Misunderstandings are for before there's real communication happening and when everyone is super insecure. Once there's a relationship, they should be talking to each other.
(Thus my constant refrain that any problem which can be solved by a thirty second conversation there is no reason for the characters not to have is unacceptable as a dramatic conflict. It is insulting to the audience and makes your characters look stupid. Comedy is different, it can have ridiculous conflicts, but it's a sliding scale where how long the conflict lasts is inversely proportional to how silly it is. To keep the plot going, comedy has to constantly escalate by heaping new problems on top of the original problem, every attempt to fix it making it worse until the climax when it all explodes. Comic characters try to have the conversation, but it keeps going wrong. The secret to this not being infuriating is it being fast-paced, funny, and not played for drama.
Having a comic conflict and suddenly asking me to take it super seriously is death for so many romcoms. Actually, it's been death for many dramadies in general. It's just bad writing, my dudes. Comic events can have dramatic fall out if handled skilfully enough, but comic conflict cannot support a dramatic plot arc.)
#writing#I'm just babbling#I'm very 'this is my one person whom I shall love forever' orientated#the otp has to otp themselves or what is the point#people can despair of getting to be together but I don't want them to be like practical and grounded#looking at getting into a relationship like it's a business merger kind of stuff#I want them to be thinking 'alas I will pine forever' not 'well that's a shame we seemed fairly compatible'#wanton romanticism or nothing okay#this is why multishipping and causal shipping is against my religion#even if I try to do it it ends up in shameless romantic idealism anyway#I'm contributing nothing of value I just keep being reminded how annoyed I am by second act breakups#it's okay if they're not definitively together yet or if the characters think they will be forcibly separated#(never accepting the separation will mean their feelings will change)#but I can't stand them just giving up on their relationship or emotionally checking out for cheap drama

Hello! This is my first time asking for a romantic matchup ( OHSHC & Hunter x Hunter )! I'm a little nervous haha...
I go by the name Prince and my pronouns are : He/They. I'm an INFP and a 4'10" Pisces.
I have black, curly hair that ends above my shoulders with the left side shaved. I have brown eyes and a slightly tanned skin. I am Pilipino. I usually wear hoodies/jackets and shorts/jogging pants but I tend to wear elaborate androgynous clothing for occasions. My ears are pierced and I have a lot of scars on both my legs and arms due to skin asthma.
I'm a total introvert who would not leave the house unless necessary, and I tend to avoid large crowds and people since I have social anxiety. I'm quite distant, cold and awkward when I first meet people but I get really weird ( ahem, shameless.) and outgoing once I warm up to someone. I'm a worrywart and prone to have pessimistic/intrusive thoughts. My humor is dark and inappropriate, and very sexual. Although, I'm panromantic asexual. My love language are physical affection ( back hugs, cuddles, face peppering, playing with your hands, hand holding, & arm over the shoulder. ), and cheesy/corny flirts. I'm also a psychology student, an artist, a cosplayer, and a creative makeup artist. I enjoy horror films and historical novels. I like playing pranks on others, listening to all kinds of music, and dancing. I dream to be a full-time cosplayer or a psychologist. I like to travel the world as well, take photos, and, of course, watch anime and read manga! I like hanging out in a dimly lit bedroom, watching movies, or at an abandoned area ( parking lot, building, etc. ) I enjoy solitude and the dark. Oh! I'm scared of butterflies and allergic to dust.
My ideal type is someone who are understanding, accepting and patient. Someone who understands that I need space in order to recharge my energy to socialize again. Supportive, honest, and loyal. Perhaps someone who can love me just as much or much more as I love them. I'm a total sap and an affectionate person to the person I love. I'm the type to wake up every morning and message them, "Good morning, hun!" and I also check up on them if they're feeling well. Someone who isn't afraid to be themselves around me and can open their heart to me. That's the biggest trust they can give to me. Loving, caring, and perceptive.
Apart from that, I also like someone who can be submissive towards me. I find them to be cute and it makes me wanna bully them more for being so adorable :") ( Will spoil them to bits after ). I may be short but I do not enjoy being the little spoon/submissive partner.
SFW & NSFW
Hi Prince thanks for the request!
we love your personality you seem hella cool. admin san is very happy to have found someone shorter than her (she's 4'11") anyways for OHSHC we thought the best character for you would be................
USA CHAN
SFW
usa chan is perfect for you because you can do anything with it! it is very versatile! usa chan is down to walk around abandoned buildings, watch movies or dancing anytime, anywhere!
need some alone time? shove usa chan into a closet and you're done! it's that simple!
N/SFW
oh you want a sub? well guess what, usa chan cant fucking talk or do anything so it'll be your lil bitch
We even chose a runner up for you and that is...................
MORI SENPAI
SFW
Mori senpai may come across as a dom due to his height but worry not, our man is the perfect sub. In fact he's literally Honey senpai's subordinate for the whole show.
He would show affection in more understated ways such as remembering your birthday and every little thing you tell him. If you mentioned a manga or movie you like a few months ago he'd get you a physical copy of it.
He would also be super in tune with your feelings and try to accommodate to your needs for physical affection as much as he can
In terms of solitude and and staying inside Mori senpai would be the ideal cuddle partner for nights in watching movies
He would also protect you from all the butterflies in the world
The height difference would be no trouble to Mori either. You and Honey Senpai are basically the same height after all. Get used to having a tall subby lover following you around
Mori isn't the most fun to play a prank on, but he would be a great accessory for playing pranks on the rest of the club
N/SFW
You like to climb him like a tree and push him down on the bed. then have your way with him (whichever way that may be)
your dark and sexual humor may not outwardly get a response from Mori but you can tell by the blood flowing to his ears and nether regions that he is enjoying himself. he is a naughty boy shhhh
he'd be happy to receive all of your physical affection and give you some back as well
If you keep him up long enough by dancing and watching movies, he'll eventually grow sleepy. AND THATS WHEN THE (subby) BEAST AWAKENS BABYYYYYY. he's WAY more physically affectionate and flirtatious
And now for HxH to suit your affinity for music we chose........................................
MELODY
SFW
Any time you get nervous or have pessimistic thoughts she would play her flute to calm you down. If you allow her to, she's also willing to play the flute for when you get nervous in crowds or around strangers.
You and her could spend hours watching movies together with her commenting on the music of all the films you show her. Can't wait to make her listen those Hans Zimmer tracks
She would also enjoy hanging out with you in parks, maybe play you a gentle melody while y'all take in the night sky and peaceful atmosphere
She would also totally get your dark humor and wouldn't misconstrue it as a negative quality since she'll always know that the sound of your heart is pure and you are just joking
Physical affection would probably make her pretty flustered so you can always bully her about that. But she's pretty mature and will love you and shower you with affection in her own way.
N/SFW
In the bedroom she likes to start off by playing her flute at the frequency which makes your piercings vibrate, getting you in the mood.
Although at first she would be shy with kisses/bedroom stuff and blush beautifully when you tease her. She would slowly warm up to you once you really got going and would lap up all the pampering and love you shower her with afterwards
Your knowledge of sigmund freud's theories mixed with your skills at cosplay would allow you to present her with the perfect father daughter roleplay scenarios melody never thought she wanted
Melody's deft fingers would be proficient at getting herself off especially when she knows you're watching :)

I watched the last key just to read ur fic first off, second off, tell me about the Intricate Rituals tm of lawrence and adam
CRIES??? YOU WHAT??? anon pls that is literally so sweet omg... I've never had someone tell me that b4 but I'm sitting here beaming. I hope you liked it/it helped things make more sense!!!!! <3
Okay so. Intricate Rituals™️. They actually have a few. (Touch is a VERY big part of Adam's love language in particular, so you know... intricate rituals that allow you to touch the skin of other men...)
On the mornings that Lawrence has to go to work, he will always kiss Adam's forehead before he leaves, no matter what. Even if Adam's not even awake yet (and let's be real, he probably isn't... not a morning person whatsoever). Does he need to, technically speaking? No. Does he feel uncomfortable if he doesn't + will it bother him for the rest of the day? Yes. I've touched on this before but in any scenario where Lawrence ends up with Adam, he is much more open with his love and, in turn, with his affection. He tells Adam he loves him often, shows that he loves him often; beyond that, I like the idea that he's just a hopeless romantic at heart, and having the life he's always wanted deep down, even if the circumstances were far less than ideal, well... Adam brings it out of him, what can he say? So he always makes sure he kisses his boyfriend's forehead before he goes to work. (And he lets Adam call him/he'll call Adam sometimes on his lunch break just to talk... not every day, but often enough <3)
On the mornings where neither of them have anywhere to be/anything to do, though, Lawrence can often be convinced to stay in bed for little while after they both wake up because, as he's long since learned, sleepy just-woke-up Adam is very, very cuddly. Literally all he has to do is just be like "Please?" and kiss at Lawrence's jaw a little bit and every single time, without fail, Lawrence will just sigh and be like "I suppose..." But make no mistake, he loves it just as much. I think both of them are very like... unused to touch? Especially like this - cuddling purely for the sake of cuddling, no emotional distress to be spoken of, it's purely just to hold each other because they can... this extends to more than just the morning, too; Lawrence's hand on Adam's lower back or his shoulder or his knee when they're close, Adam keeping an arm around Lawrence's middle or leaning against his shoulder or resting his head against Lawrence's back from behind. Adam is definitely more inexperienced with this kind of affection than Lawrence is, but they're both starving for it and if the opportunity presents itself, neither of them will turn it down. Shameless plug but I've written a fic abt this particular concept!
Anyway! Once they get out of bed, though, Lawrence will start a fresh pot of coffee for Adam + Adam will get Lawrence's morning cup of tea ready (it's so funny bc Larry can't stand coffee and Adam has yet to try a flavour of tea he likes... the things they do for love). Lawrence typically makes breakfast for them on these days, because Adam isn't at full capacity yet and because Larry honestly doesn't mind doing so; he kind of likes being able to do that for Adam honestly? Adam has issues with eating (i.e. doesn't eat many meals, doesn't eat with regularity, often feels nauseous + unable to eat, usually eats the same foods... part of that is, naturally, that he's autistic, but also because he's gone so long eating so little that it takes him a while to adjust to the fact that Hey, I Don't Have To Do That Anymore), and Lawrence is very familiar with those issues, so to see Adam eating like three blueberry pancakes and enjoying them makes Lawrence just 🥰 bc he knows it's hard for Adam.
So Lawrence will be at the stove, watching to make sure he knows when to flip the pancakes, and then Adam will walk up behind him and wrap his arms around his waist and lay his head against his back. Sometimes he just rests there, sometimes he leans up a little so he can leave kisses on the back of Lawrence's neck, but the motive is always the same: touch. Lawrence might not say anything in acknowledgement, but he'll always lean back a little bit in Adam's arms to just be like hi, I know you're there, I love you. And they'll stay that way for a while, because why not? They've earned this gentleness, this tenderness, have they not? Eventually they know they'll have to separate so that they can get plates out and silverware and such, but while Lawrence is cooking, they're content to stand and sway a little together.
Another example of Lawrence's romantic tendencies is he'll pull Adam's chair out for him. I firmly think Adam wouldn't care for this if it were Anyone else, but he'll just smile at Lawrence and thank him and sit down because the fact that Lawrence wants to do things like that for him, something so simple but that speaks volumes... he really, really appreciates it. When they sit down he'll knock his ankle against Lawrence's under the table just because he can and Lawrence will do it back and they'll be sitting there grinning like fools bc!! It's so silly but it makes them so happy? And I think they deserve to be silly sometimes. Again, they've earned it.
Um!! Another big one is what they do before bed every night. So when Lawrence gets home from work, after he's had a little bit of time to relax, Adam will herd him into the bathroom and help him to sit on the edge of the bathtub, help unstrap his prosthetic, and he'll get out the special basin + soft washcloths they have specifically for this reason and he'll help Lawrence wash his stump. It's something that Lawrence used to hold so much shame over it, refused to accept any sort of help + made things harder for himself (which I've touched on in my reply to an ask frm @1ceblock), but at one point Adam found him struggling with it and was just like. "I've got this, it's okay. I want to help you. Will you let me help you?" and that's how this little ritual came to be. Once he's done and he's made sure the stump is properly dry, he'll press a kiss or two there and it will always make Lawrence sigh and smile because Adam doesn't have to do that. He does it because he wants to. That means a whole lot to Lawrence, and he always makes sure to let Adam know by kissing him before they leave the bathroom.
After that, once they've changed into their pajamas and are comfortable, Lawrence will get out whatever novel he's been reading lately and settle back against the pillows, and Adam will rest his head on his shoulder and sling an arm over his waist and just. Let out the biggest sigh. He always does, and he does it because he's warm and comfortable and happy and because he loves Lawrence, and Lawrence will rest his cheek against Adam's head and they just lay like that for a while. Sometimes if Adam's interested, Lawrence will read out loud so Adam can hear too, because he's often too tired to read along. They can stay like this for a good hour and a half, honestly. Sometimes Adam falls asleep like this, feeling safe and contented, and it always warms Lawrence's heart. It makes him so happy to see Adam so relaxed just because they're close.
Eventually though, when Lawrence is finally done reading for the night, one of them will pull the other's back to his chest (they act as big/little spoon interchangeably) and whoever it is being big spoon will also put his arm around the other's middle. Of course they stay as they are if Adam's already asleep, because Lawrence doesn't want to wake him up if he's sleeping well, but if not, it depends on who wants to be held more. It took Lawrence a Long time to admit he wanted Adam to do that sometimes, but once he got the hang of it, he's completely unashamed about it; Adam doesn't mind at all + honestly finds it kinda sweet, actually. Again, that kind of thing wasn't exactly smth Lawrence allowed himself before Adam, so it's unfamiliar territory for a good while, but he finds himself quite at ease with it with time <33
Other than those particular tendencies it's the little things; sitting hip-to-hip on the couch despite having plenty of room Not to do that, one resting his head on the other's thigh while they're watching TV/a movie, bumping hips while doing the dishes, stuff like that. They're both a level of touch-starved (Adam more so than Lawrence, I think), so they're kind of navigating this together and are more than happy to indulge in it whenever the opportunity arises.
#im. literally yelling tht my fic got you to watch the last key dude!!!!!!!#am I projecting w adams eating issues? yeah probably but thats fine. I feel it in my heart#anyway! thank you so much this genuinely made me feel better... free serotonin#'you create intricate rituals that allow you to touch the skin of other men' hits hard honestly#saw#adam#lawrence#they. deserve to be happy and soft. I feel it with my whole heart

I’m gonna do it. May we please have romantic headcanons for Namor 🥺💕
Ahhh! I love romance. I answered a similar ask to this before here. I generally tend to base my romantic headcanons according to who Namor's partner is at the time so general ones are a bit hard for me since I like to personalize them because I don't think Namor treats his romantic partners the same, some he might have a stronger history/connection with like he wouldn't love Marrina the same way he loves Betty but it doesn't mean he doesn't care about Marrina just as much.
General Romantic Headcanons are more like: Namor is very polite with his intended, treats them like a gentleman, sends them gifts like seashells, ugly fish in a bowl he thinks are neat, spoils them silly with his wealth and takes them on amazing dates.
I always call Namor an undersea romeo so just about anything super romantic no matter how cheesy it might be, would be in character for him because he loves to let the other person know his intentions (aka he has a ring in a box just waiting to be pulled out so he can propose to them) and he feels that if you love someone you should let them know.
I think that last one was a lesson he had to learn the hard way because he never really let Betty know exactly how he felt about her and then it was too late, the same with Dorma.
So when Marrina came along Namor dove headfirst into love and marriage because he didn't want to lose another person of course this is Namor so he lost her anyways seriously give the fish man a break marvel.
However I really feel there are different stages to Namor's romantic side since he's been around a long time:
Young Man/Golden Age - Too wrapped up in having fun and going on adventures to want or even consider marriage.
Middle Age/Silver Age - Lots of declarations of love, wants to be married but is always distracted by trying to keep his kingdom running.
Still Middle Age/Bronze Age- Settled down, is happily married man, makes his loved one feel cherished.
Now - Feels like love is an unattainable ideal for if it was meant to be he surely would be with someone who doesn't die by now? Carrie's words of "I like you Namor but I don't want to be the next dead wife" is burned into his mind and overshadows any serious attempt because he worries he's cursed to always lose his partner. Is pretty sad and lonely alot of the time.
Also some straight up FACTS about Namor is:
1. The man is a loyal bitch. Anywho who says he would cheat is dead wrong, he may be a flirt but he's a 'ride or die for life' man. The man stayed with his wife when she turned into a sea monster, that's loyal as hell.
(He says he wants to release her from this horror because he knows Marrina's sweet and kind nature would be appalled at the destruction and death she caused in this form, when she reverts to normal for a short time this is confirmed because she begs Namor to end her before she can hurt anyone else)
2. He's also pretty monogamous and doesn't do the poly thing much but like he's up to it if his partners are cool with it.
3. He's a shameless flirt. If he flirts with your woman and she decides he's better then that's her choice!
4. The man is a monster fucker, Marvel needs to stop being cowards and show him as such more. Also make him pansexual because the thing about Namor is he sees beauty in all forms, he isn't limited by surface human beauty standards.
5. Namor loves badass women who can kick his ass. He's basically the:
Here honey hold my arm to keep me from bleeding while I waste this fucker.
Go on babe I've got your arm.
#namor#namor mckenzie#namor the sub mariner#marvel comics#namor headcanons#thanks for asking!#as always my answers go on for too long as i gush about the fishman

I’m so fucking tempted to say “every single question with Kazushuu or Hitoshuu (except for the nsfw ones i guess)” But I don’t want to singlehandedly kill you
ok let’s do it
as a side note sometimes the answer is the same or similar for both ships just bc shuu is uh. the same person. but ofc not always
under cut for lengthhhh
1. Who makes the first move and how?
hitoshuu: normally im gonna say definitely hitori. he probably decides to be direct and just straight up ask. in iwasweetie au specifically tho i want it to be sweetie if only bc i need to make him get over his shit. he also asks “directly” but it actually involves a lot of stuttering and beating around the bush so it ends up not being very direct
shuukazu: im not sure if it would really be one of them specifically, i can see them as the “this kind of just happened” couple. maybe kazuaki is the one after several months whos like “so um… what are we…. lol………..”
2. Who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better?
hitoshuu: shuu, not that hitori is the paragon of confidence but shuus like “wtf hes the ideal young man and im Bastard Supreme but ok i guess”
shuukazu: BOTH LMAO but kazu is more vocal abt it and shuu is the Bottle Up EVERYTHING type
some good ol body positivity cuddle sessions work in both cases
3. Who is the most romantic?
anyone but shuu for obvious “i dont even know what feelings ARE” reasons
4. Who can’t keep their hands to themselves?
again anyone but shuu for obvious “i dont even know what intimacy IS” reasons but specifically hitori is just more confident and kazuaki isnt necessarily confident but is more just. shameless
5. Who says ‘I love you’ first?
not shuu for similar reasons as above. there’s a trend here, you see
6. Who would they ask if they ever had a threesome?
THIS is a CHRISTIAN blog
7. What do they get up to on a night out?
hitoshuu: going to dinner at a place thats nice but not TOO nice. like good comfortable atmosphere and good food but not posh
shuukazu: they probably just wander around, maybe go shopping, kazuaki keeps pointing out stuff he wants and dr iwamine “i dont know what to do with my money bc i dont want for material things” shuu just buys it for him. shuu please stop enabling him. stop it.
8. What do they like in bed?
hitoshuu: cuddling :)
shuukazu: snuggling :)
9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?
i feel like shuu considers every single new couple-y thing he does to be the new most embarrassing thing he’s done. we’re holding hands? embarrassing. i kissed you? god now THATS embarrassing. you caught me wearing your sweater that you accidentally left at my place? well put me in the fucking ground thats literally the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to anybody. how dare i show sentimentality. despicable
kazuaki is similar in that he’s constantly one-upping himself and getting a NEW most embarrassing thing but his things include stuff like getting caught watching really strange anime and scream-singing pop songs and anime OPs in the shower
hitori probably like tripped on the sidewalk once
10. What two songs, two books and two luxury items do they take to a desert island?
these questions are difficult bc man idk what media exists in 2188 bird japan
11. What do they hide from one another?
in both cases shuus answer is “just about everything” hes terrified of the mortifying ordeal of being known. pretty much everything you learn about him has to be squeezed out
hitori hides how troubled he really is because he wants to seem like the responsible one everyone can depend on so that they dont have to worry about him. he does his best to hide when hes struggling but since shuu has that exact same impulse they pretty quickly start to see through each other, but are also very understanding about it.
kazuaki probably doesnt have as much to hide but he might be shy about portraying how REALLY in love with shuu he is too soon because he doesnt want to scare him away. he also hides the weirder shows and games and stuff that hes into lol
12. What first changes when it starts getting serious?
hitoshuu: i can see them having that kind of relationship where at first its casual and almost competitive in a way, like a “i think youre sexy and the only thing i know to do about it is see what i can do to make you flustered, then act smug when i succeed” thing. but over time when the novelty of that starts to wear off they both kinda realize they just straight up like each other and start being more genuine and soft.
shuukazu: again its a similar thing with shuu where he starts feeling more comfortable with letting himself be a little more genuine and START opening up. kazuaki picks up on this as a good sign and starts to worry less about trying to impress shuu and more just enjoying their time together.
13. When do they realize they should get together?
this is another one that i think is a similar answer in both cases, at least for shuu’s part he has a “dammit. i cant lose him” moment. since hes a person of very few words he tries to communicate “i want us to be serious” via letting down his walls a little bit, which hitori/kazuaki hopefully notice is happening and then are like “oh maybe we can work”
14. When one has a cold, what does the other do?
for shuu and hitori its “responsibly take care of you, bc its what i should do but also secretly i get STRESSED AS FUCK when someone i care about is sick so i gotta make sure youre okay”
for kazuaki its “take care of you, although i dont really know what im doing, also i thought since youre bedridden we could cuddle but its not as enjoyable as i wanted so like I’m Here but also im gonna watch tv okay? ill get u crackers and ginger ale”
15. When they watch a film what do they choose and why? Who gets the final vote?
hitoshuu: shuu’s gonna say he doesn’t care, but hitori also doesn’t really care so eventually he’ll get shuu to admit that he’d like to watch a nature documentary. especially if it’s marine-themed. hitori likes that too so hey there you go
shuukazu: shuu WILL watch the 76th pokemon movie OR ELSE
16. When the zombie apocalypse comes, how do they cope together?
hitoshuu: both are cutthroat bastards that do anything it takes to keep each other safe. their reliance and trust in each other is probably 99% of what keeps them going.
shuukazu: again shuus gonna do literally anything it takes to keep kazuaki safe, but to be real i dont know if kazuaki is making it out of this one. and if he doesnt then shuus not either.
17. When they find a time machine, where do they go?
shuu’s answer is going to be at various points in prehistory to study organisms that are now long-extinct (side note god thats definitely my answer too). his bf is worried abt the dangers but comes with him to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble.
i think hitori might not have anything specific in mind but going to historical sites in their heydays seems like a good choice.
since kazuaki likes literature he’d probably want to see historical stuff related to that, like seeing shakespeare plays when they first came out and meeting his favorite dead authors to ask them questions.
18. When they fight, how do they make up?
hitoshuu: hitori doesn’t like to dance around that kind of thing, after a little time has passed for them to both think about it then he’ll just be direct and say “hey lets talk about that thing that happened” if he feels he was in the wrong then he’ll then follow that up with an apology. i can see hitori being a little grudgy but then quickly getting tired of it and just wanting things to be resolved. shuu hates talking things out because hes bad at it but he knows its best so he’ll just try to explain how he felt at the time but also what he’s considered since then. even if he’s not good at explaining himself, hitori is good at understanding him anyway so they usually work it out pretty quickly.
shuukazu: they can be messier since kazuaki gets really emotional really quickly and sometimes says things he doesnt mean. theyre both bad at dealing with it afterwards though until after a few awkward days, kazuaki cant take it and is like “waaa i dont want us to be fighting anymore 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺” and shuus like “ok.” because yeah he’ll take the easy way out. they could probably improve their communication tbh
19. Where do they go on their first date?
hitoshuu: they probably decide to do something simple and casual to make it less awkward so they just get coffee. shuu feels like, from what he knows, that he should be expecting hitori to make a move on him. hitori doesnt because he wants to be considerate of shuus comfort level, but shuu takes it as a sign of disinterest. luckily shuu realizes hes wrong about that when hitori quickly invites him on Another date where they take a stroll in the park, and thats when hitori goes in for the tactical hand-hold maneuver.
shuukazu: kind of the opposite of hitoshuu in that they dont really declare it officially as a date. kazuaki just asks shuu if he wants to see a movie with him, not really calling it a date but kind of implying it to be one. shuu probably doesnt care about the movie but thinks this might possibly maybe be a date so he should go. kazuaki then uses it as a chance to Put On The Movies, as awkward as that might be, including the classic “stretch with my arms up and then let one down over your shoulders” move. shuu doesnt really know how to indicate his own interest in response but hopes the fact that hes also not complaining in any way gives a hint. despite it not REALLY being an official date at the time, later on theyll look back on it and decide that yeah that was their first date.
20. Where do they go on holiday?
shuu hates taking time off work, but if he must, then he’ll be content as long as theres something scientifically interesting there like a museum or an aquarium.
hitori doesnt really mind where they go, hes just grateful to get to go on holiday at all, so he’ll let shuu pick. and again, that’s going to be somewhere with a natural history museum, probably a very nice one and they’ll both enjoy it.
kazuaki is similar in that he’s just happy to be there but his ideal holiday destination is probably just…. akihabara. so shuu relents and goes there with him occasionally. kazuaki does like to visit aquariums with shuu though! they do both
21. Where do they get nervous about going with one another?
hitoshuu: the cemetery, at least at first when they arent used to being that vulnerable in front of each other
shuukazu: well shuu sure as shit is nervous about going to anime cons with kazu
22. Where does their first kiss happen?
in both cases, definitely at one of their homes, because shuus too much of a wreck to have a moment like that in a public place.
for shuukazu, i picture it that theyre just hanging out at kazuakis place and relaxing, and they end up cuddling a lot, and kazuaki kisses him kind of impulsively. hes then very apologetic about it before shuu manages to assure him that its fine.
hitoshuu, maybe hitori walks shuu home after a date and goes for the classic end of date goodbye kiss, but just on the cheek. then when once again hitori has walked shuu home, shuu wonders if he should expect a real kiss this time, but hitori goes for the cheek again. shuus disappointed and grabs hitoris sleeve before he turns away because he doesnt know how to say he wants more. but hitori takes the hint and kisses him for real this time.
23. Where is their favorite place to be together?
in both cases it’s at home, because shuu finds it much easier to be intimate when they’re in privacy. i think all three of them really appreciate just getting to relax together.
24. Where do they first have sex?
what did i say about this being a christian blog
25. Why do they fight?
usually its because shuu said something a little too tactless. hes not so clueless that he’ll say something really obviously offensive, but sometimes he really doesn’t know what’s too much. but his bf is hopefully understanding of this and corrects him Still Firmly but still with some “but i know you didnt mean it like that, we’re okay” way, because chances are he really didnt.
for hitoshuu specifically, hitori has to be on shuu about eating properly and can sometimes get kind of annoyed about it. shuus kneejerk reaction is to then be offended because hes an adult who can take care of himself. but they calm down and make up when shuu remembers that hitori just worries for him, and hitori remembers that shuu doesnt not eat just to spite him.
for shuukazu, i can see kazuaki’s lack of responsibility and aloofness start to get on shuu’s nerves, and when he brings it up kazuaki thinks he’s just being mean. again, similarly to hitoshuu, they get over it when kazuaki reminds himself that shuu wants him to be able to take care of himself, and shuu reminds himself as well that he can be too abrasive and should work on it.
26. Why do they need to have a serious chat?
hitoshuu: they dont have to right away but over time it would be good for them to be honest abt their respective traumas and the shit theyre dealing with instead of hiding it
shuukazu: similar, shuu should probably get around to being more open abt his shit. they might also want to have a talk abt what a serious relationship is gonna look like for them
27. Why do their friends get annoyed with them?
hitoshuu: i answered this already! but again, its bc theyre so ~responsible~
shuukazu: ppl either see kazuaki being super clingy and think “man hes so overbearing, his poor partner 😒” or see shuu being emotionless and think “man theyre so cold, their poor boyfriend 😒” actually they gotta mind their own damn business
28. Why do they get jealous?
hitoshuu: i feel like hitori actually gets hit on a pretty decent amount. shuu is never happy about it, but the death glares he starts sending usually scare the person off anyway
shuukazu: both of them think the other is too good for them so if anyone looks at them with even a little too much interest the other is immediately like “well i guess this is it”
29. Why do they fall a little bit more in love?
hitoshuu: little moments shuu loves is when hitori asks him how he is, how he slept. when he makes him dinner. hitori loves when shuu looks deep in thought, tucks his hair behind his ear, and he definitely likes to see him get along with nageki, which he does.
shuukazu: shuu loves when kazuakis eyes light up with excitement when he sees something he likes, especially when shuu realizes that hes one of those things too. he also loves kazuakis really nice hugs, especially when shuu just woke up from a nightmare. kazuaki loves how shuu listens to him intently, and asks questions about the things hes interested in, and sometimes rests his hand on him when hes getting tired.
30. Why does it work (or not work) between them?
hitoshuu: both are important figures in each other’s lives, obv shuu helped nageki but also hitori is probably the first person to get even a little close to shuu after ryuuji died. theyre both just pockets of trauma but are doing their best so it would be good for them to support each other and try to heal. theyre both pretty dependable so when the going gets tough they’re each other’s rocks
shuukazu: theyre definitely the “it will never work” couple that ends up working anyway. shuu might think kazuaki is annoying at first but if ryuuji is any indication shuu definitely seems to gravitate towards people who are more chill and even a little silly, and when shuu realizes that kazuaki isnt as dumb as he makes himself seem that helps a lot. for kazuaki shuu definitely has a ~mysterious~ aspect that draws him in initially but when it wears off as he learns more about shuu, instead of the magic being gone he just starts finding him more relatable and endearing so their relationship actually improves.
#hato#hitoshuu#shuukazu#shuu#hitori#kazuaki#kirogaraii#these were really interesting to answer#it made me think a lot abt the ways i think these ships are similar but also different#and how theres always one constant: shuu is a mess#but theyre ALL messes so its ok theyll be messy together <3

Thoughts on Other Students in 3H
in no particular order
Hubert: evil snake boi, i kinda like you. i just wish there was more actual meat to ya then what there is. still, he does his role effectively and unlike edelgard plays into the whole evil empire thing with more gusto so i ironically find him more palatable because atleast the game isnt trying to pretend he isnt shady as fuck.
Dedue: oddly charming despite his straight laced attitude, he gets some interesting nuance in how well he highly respects (cough loves cough) dimitri and likes individual people from the blue lions, he doesnt have any particular fondness for faerghus as a whole which is definitely understandable given his history. hes essentially using the camus/murdoch aspect of undying loyalty and even borrows elements of the female camuses line of romantic interest in their liege however heavily implied it might be and applying that to a male playable character. Plus he just has some fun and interesting interactions with other characters in general.
Lorenz: I have difficulty saying whether i like him. on the one hand, he ended up being more multidimensional then i thought he was going to be with his internal conflict between keeping up appearances for the sake social status and societal order and his desire to pursue his own personal interests and ideals against the needs of his father and thus societal conventions. on the other hand, the game never really runs with this as much as it should and hes still treated as a bit of a joke character so... c+ to b?
Ingrid: the token heterosexual of the blue lions whos still kinda gay anyways, her whole struggle with being a knight over a housewife seems a bit odd on the surface considering theres plenty of female knights and no one throws much of a fuss in universe, until you learn that it isnt so much that society expects her to do it as matter of course and more so that shes struggling with whether to pursue personal duty to her family or personal desires and ideals kinda like lorenz. in that respect she hits the mark a bit better then he does.
Raphael: kinda insubstantial but i liked him anyways, his sheer exuberance can be kinda refreshing in the games darker moments and hes got a few angles of his own such as his refusal to consider his parents deaths as part of a larger conspiracy so as to not hurt his friendship with ignatz nor ruin his own life and his sisters. plus hes just generally a nice guy. like a big huggable bear. just a shame that being a nice kinda dumb huggable bear is all thats really done with him.
Ignatz: his painting stuff and personal insecurities about wanting to do it over being a knight which his parents want him to do, more of that duty over desires and ideals thing again, is well enough and his probably misplaced guilt over raphaels misfortunes is definitely a highlight of him but he never really grabs as a character for some reason. probably because theres a lot of other characters in the game that hit those same marks and do it better then him.
Sylvain: has a lot of aspects that never really feel like they get proper follow up, his big thing is less womanizer and more so that he covers up his own mistrust and personal feeling by pretending to be a shameless flirt and philanderer. basically, maybe the emotional pain will go away if i flirt with girls and act the fool. but again there never really feels like theres any proper follow up for all this, others comment on it and then its more often then not dropped in story. hes fun enough but never really realized if that makes sense.
Caspar: shonen protagonist is kinda an apt word to describe him honestly, and that idealism of his clashes with the more grey on grey morality of the world hes within which is never a particularly bad direction to take the shonen bois in if done well like hunter x hunter. And he is done well, or at least satisfactorily to the point that hes another one i ended up liking more then i thought i would. his problem is more so that his interactions with most other characters in the main cast which feel duller then they should on most occasions.
Dorothea: probably gonna get a bit of shit for this, but i have no interest in her. her insecurities about her future and getting a good husband is well and interesting but manuela does that better honestly and outside of that dorotheas a bit... not shallow but hazy and insubstantial if you will. she obviously has appeal to people but like ignatz she failed to grab me in part because others did what she did and better within the game itself.
Ashe: soft boi chose to be soft instead of hard, one of the characters i found liking and one i expected to kinda like to begin with. in game he gets accused of being childish and naive a lot but i dont see it personally, hes not naive but more so tries to look for the best in people and in life like lonato did all those years ago for him. that said, the speed with which lonato dies damages his identity as a character a bit by happening before we really get a chance to feel for his relation to lonato, its not to big a bug bear as it doesnt hurt his character all that much but it does feel a bit frustrating.
Felix: teenage angst personified, his main gripes seem to be a distaste of warrior culture and its glorification of bloodshed and sacrifice but instead of approaching it with sadness or pacifism, he lashes out against what he feels is the unfairness of the world. hes not exactly wrong in his feelings and as a character it makes sense and works for his abrasive attitude, and its an interesting twist to the navarre type to have their isolation come not from stoicism nor sheer blood lust or a combo of the two but rather from a rage against the machine of society mindset.
Ferdinand: he got more interesting as i got farther along, and i personally feel he works the best as a character when going against edelgard since thats where more of his personal drama comes from. hes eager to succeed and prove himself worthy of his title over time and holds a chivalrous mindset very similar to others in the cast but his growth is less about learning how to hold onto those ideals in the face of reality for the sake of personal fulfillment but more so about learning to define himself by himself and not by societies needs. ultimately he comes to value chivalry not because its what people tell him to value but because he truly values it and i enjoy that. but its also why i feel he works better on other routes then edelgards since there hes still valuing himself not for himself but for the expectations society or edelgard in this case is placing him under, one tyrant for another in a sense. i admit i dont remember much about him on edelgards route though because i just like him more on the others.
Leonie: poorly timed support aside, she has an odd charm to her that a lot of modern fire emblem characters just dont have anymore. but knuckling past jeralt senpai shes an interesting blend of stingy and work effort that goes to inform itself and her relations to others. and like a lot of the golden deer she has a lackadaisical attitude of ‘i might not know what the fuck is happening, but i do know someone needs an ass whooping!’ and it works especially well in her case since her character is very attuned towards focusing more on her personal matters then the grand scheme of things because she has rent due in a few months. if she was in a more traditional fe set up she would definitely be a beowolf archtype that you need to pay to recruit. in fact im surprised thats not an option on other routes to begin with for her.
Hilda: honestly suprised me by not being a pure serra type. she has aspects of that on the surface with the selfish almost vain attitude towards life and others bur well serra is more about puffing herself up to hide insecurity and contribute towards a desperate desire for grand social status, Hilda downplays herself and her abilities due to living in her brothers shadow if unintentionally and seeing the stress it can bring. they’re both lazy and vain, on the surface anyways, always getting others to do their work for them but well serra seeks more social status to escape it hilda seeks less social status to escape it. plus it was kinda funny to see hilda act as claudes unofficial number 2 you could still recruit.
Lindhart: Sleepy boi needs a nap and thats kinda it really. exaggeration maybe but unlike a lot of characters in the game and the series as a whole he really doesnt have a reason to be there as a character. as a unit certainly but not a character, in terms of motivation anyways. He hates blood, fighting and violence, hed rather sleep or pursue personal interests then work or politics, hes insightful and intelligent but the important players in the plot have other advisers and hes not interested in stepping up in that regard anyways. his only real reason for being there is academic interest and even then a pin has to be put in that when war breaks out. hes not a bad character overall though, his sleepiness and insight make for an interesting double act along with his blunt mannerisms, i just have trouble pinning down motivations for him.
Mercedes: big team mom energy, which i suppose goes along with the whole being older then everyone thing. a bit dopey and airheaded at first glance shes one of the more receptive characters to how others are feeling and well she does try to nurture shes not above scolding if she feels it would help someone more then praise and reassurance. of course shes also very detached to events of the world mostly just there to help the people around her from the bottom rather then the top which is not an insult and more one of the things i find fascinating about her. it all makes for a very interesting character and one of my personal favorites of the cast.
Annette: overworker, issues with her dad, magic bubbly, and hits things with axes. a nice recipe of a character but it never feels as if the game can get it all to blend properly. more so to the point is that most of these elements work independently of each other and not to inform each other despite the games insistence. theres a lot of dramatic potential involving her father as well and though the game makes the best use of those aspects its not to the benefit of the rest of her character. it doesnt hurt her either though and she has some appealing dialogue with other characters.
Marianne: I had trouble getting to like her, perhaps more so then any other character among the other students. not because i hated her but because shes, well, very boring. alot of the characters in the game are into the self deprecation thing already and well her personality aspects of acting quite and submissive to fall into the background from a lack of self confidence it also feels like the game came up with two different explanations for it and couldnt settle on whether it was because of her adoptive fathers pressure or her families history and instead of weaving both together decided to use them interchangeably. Sometimes shes a wallflower because of her father and a lack of confidence to state her mind and self loathing over that lack of confidence, other times its because of her lineage and self loathing over her cursed history. never really at the same time.
Bernadetta: another odd favorite for me. recent support changes aside, the basic gist of her history remains the same in that her father was a tyrant in regards to her future which caused her to grow up with no confidence and a crippling fear of society, so shes already off to a good start as a character by basically doing mariannes schtik but better. well its hard for me to definitely say she ever grows past that as a character, thats fine in my opinion because her development is less stop being a recluse because society demands you dont and more so about making actual friends and learning that not all people are garbage fires just most of them. in most of her supports anyways. she just feels the most rewarding to interact with alright, and she was the one i always felt the most upset to mess up a speak thing with. Let us hug and stay inside watching cartoons together.
Petra: i went in wanting to like her and really liking her at first, but shes hit a middle of the road for me now. her speech gimmick wasn't particularly egregious and gets even less noticeable after the timeskip, but her actual character is a very straight forward ‘national pride demands independence’ package and doesnt really escape past that boundary all that much. its very understandable motivation, id even go so far as to say that shes the one with the best reasons to betray the empire of the black eagles characters, so like ferdinand i feel she works better outside of the black eagles in term of her own character identity and motivation/development as she finally stands up for her peoples right to exist on their own in an fe6 echidna kinda fashion. outside of that though shes... foreign to the other characters. thats kinda it.
Lysithia: as a unit she hits like a truck, as a character shes functional but hardly revolutionary for the series. i mean i did like her since i have a fondness for her archtype of weird magic prodigy poor social skills, but more so that she doesn't hit any particularly new notes in that regard. Shes a lot of lute, with some delthea childishness in her, some of sanakis sharper political wit and dark history, and a bit of miriels scientist on top. that said its all blended very nicely and she has some nice scenes for herself that got me to feel and care for her, some kinda adorable moments, and a history well woven into the games background and more so then most of the other deer and a lot of the other characters from across the houses in general. for a minor character anyways.
you may now all stone me to death.

Character Ask!! Maes Hughes
Oh, @vino-and-doggos ! This one hurts a little. I’m not over Maes’s death. I never will be. Thus, I am making the executive decision to write this in the present tense.
First impression: From the very first episode, Maes is so likable. Friendly with Roy. Welcoming to Ed and Al. He is a gregarious family man who remains absolutely infatuated with his wife and daughter. This man is #FatherhoodGoals. Maes is a provider for his family, a cheerleader to those he loves and shelter personified to a few teenagers so far from the comforts of the place they call home. I wish there were more men like him. But after you get to know him…
Impression now: …Maes is that and so much more. Unlike Roy, I believe the mask Maes wears is an authentic part of his personality. Roy pretends to be a shameless philanderer, but Maes is a doting father. Maes uses his mask to exaggerate his benign qualities and conceal his dangerous motivations. And, of course, even his goal is altruistic. Even though his job can be depressing, he strives to support Roy in his quest to become führer. Perhaps the only shift in my perspective relates to Maes’s intelligence. It becomes clear as the series progresses that Maes is too smart for his own good and exceptionally intuitive. And, I believe, Maes can’t hide his intelligence all that well. Which is why… Well, you know.
Favorite moment: My favorite FMAB moment is in episode 9, Created Feelings. At Elicia’s third birthday party, Winry expresses sadness and doubt about Ed and Al’s precarious predicament. Likewise, she feels alone and confused, and more than anything else, Winry wants Ed and Al to let her in. With very little background information, Hughes breaks it down for Winry. He takes off those glasses and drops his facade to get through to her. And let me tell you, getting through to most teenager girls is hard. Maes says: “In general, men prefer to let their actions speak instead of words. When they’re in pain, they don’t want to burden anyone with it. Not if they can help it. They don’t want anyone to worry about them; that’s how they are. Even so, there may come a time when they’ll ask for your help, and when they do, I know that you’ll be there for them. Isn’t that enough?” This advice is direct. It isn’t pandering, metaphorical or theoretical. Maes understands the position Winry is in, and I think this is also evidence pointing to a romantic relationship between Roy and Maes. There’s a correlation between Maes and Winry opposite Roy and Ed.
Idea for a story: @hyuroiweek is coming up. I want to participate so badly, but I fear it isn’t in my stars. Anyway, If I do get around to writing a story, I’d like to write about Hughes receiving an internal complaint about Roy and Riza concerning a violation of the frat regs. Hughes promptly silences the underling, vaguely threatens them and ends up musing about the Maes x Roy x Riza quagmire that evolved during Ishval.
Unpopular opinion: Maes loves Gracia, but I don’t believe he’s entirely faithful to her. In fact, he picked her over Roy because he wants a conventional family life, and Gracia was willing to give him that. Roy was not; the flame alchemist is anything but conventional. So while Gracia and Elicia are the great loves of Maes’s life, I think he’s got a greedy streak. Given the opportunity, Maes would try to have his cake - Gracia - and eat it too - Roy.
Favorite relationship: Surprisingly enough, I think my favorite relationship is the father-daughter bond Maes shares with Elicia. Elicia is so young when Maes dies, but Maes is so devoted to her. Just consider his last words. “Elicia remember daddy loves you. I’m sorry.” Elicia grows up with only memories. Some hers, mostly the remembrances of others and photographs. This relationship is wonderfully bittersweet, to say the least. Damn, Maes. Why? WHY?!?!?!
Favorite headcanon: Obviously, it’s the Maes x Roy x Riza quagmire during Ishval. I headcanon that Roy needed both Riza and Maes to keep himself sane during the war, but he needed them in different ways. They both believe in Roy, but Riza shares his ideals. Maes is aware that Roy tends to be overly idealistic, but his main focus is supporting Roy, being his rock. Where the Royai relationship needs no words, Roy and Maes need words, and Maes is only too good at saying the right thing at precisely the right moment. Maes and Riza are two sides of the same coin used to keep Roy sane during the most horrific moments of his life.
Ask me about a character!

Beware the Creeper #1
First issue in the original six issue miniseries written in 1968. Creeper’s had about three of these over the years, none of them exceeding twelve issues. Well, better a short, comprehensive story than, well...the Clone Saga.
Behind you. The Menace lurks behind you. If you’d just turn around-he blends in only slightly better than you do-he’s got orange on him for godssakes, is he Naruto’s grandfather or something? He is behind you!
Again, not a bad cover at all. No wasted space, an actual background, stuff happening. My only criticisms are that the rain looks like melting icicles instead of rain, and that the colors clash a bit, but hey, Silver Age. Riotous colors were not unusual.
We start out on a dark and stormy night, in which no one sees a green and bright orange ninja scaling a building. Well, it is raining, perhaps there are fewer people on the streets. Sure, I can suspend my belief for that.
This guy is The Terror, and he is going to these great lengths to sneak up on an unfortunate fellow he believes is going to betray him. We get the immediate establishment of this guy as a bad guy. No mysteries here.
I’ve got some bad news for you, sir...
Exactly what you think is about to happen, happens.
Actually, it kind of doesn’t. Yes, The Terror bust right through that window, but how this guy dies is a mystery. Mr. Terror doesn’t shoot him. Doesn’t stab him. It’s implied that he maybe hits him, but just then...
Jack Ryder, you have the worst timing of any man alive.
The Terror kicks his butt. How embarrassing. And then leaves without even bothering to kill him. The insolence!
His poor victim dies of...plot-convenience-itis, but not before giving Jack a list of names to check out. Now that’s spite.
Jack, of course, wants to follow up on this as soon as he can, but is stymied by his boss, who has assigned him to watch over the stations weather girl, Vera Sweet.
Yes, that is seriously her name.
I told you so. Vera is a publicity hound who smokes like a chimney, and has zero respect for our hero. She is also listed on almost every Creeper bio description as his love interest.
There is literally not a single comic in which this is true.
Really. We never, ever see this. The best we ever get on this subject is several mentions in more recent years that they used to go out, but it went bad and now they barely get along. In these original comics, they are practically antagonists.
Meanwhile, the Terror bursts in on a gangster, still dressed like that. Instead of busting into laughter, he gets busted in the face, and the Terror demands half of his rackets profits. And it looks like he’s not the only unlucky mobster to be victimized by the Terror.
Aw, the double-crossers might have been double crossed. I don’t feel sorry for any of them.
Jack ditches Vera at the very first opportunity to check up on those names victim #1 provided. First up, Gerk Kreg.
Try saying that name five times fast. Anyway, for a supposedly successful gangster, it sure is easy for Jack to just walk right into his house. More like succ-sessful, amirite?
Anyway.
It’s so easy for him to get in there that he has to switch to Creeper and bring attention to himself just to get noticed. He also makes the first mention of what is in later iterations referenced as an addiction to Professor Yatz’s serum.
Hey, if throwing up the horns is supposed to be demonic, does throwing down the horns invoke angels?
Of course, a Goon Battle follows. You know the kind. Where these supposed tough guys can barely lay a finger on our hero, and are sometimes so bad at fighting that he can have an entire internal monologue about how awesome he is without even getting interrupted?
Yes, yes, you are the very picture of idealized manliness. And so are your underoos. (Nice buttcheek we got there, thanks Ditko.)
Well, he battles his way through the mob penthouse, stopping only to question a goon, but doing so gets him ambushed and restrained. Let this be a lesson to you; punch first, ask questions later does not work. Punch only, and ask no questions is the way to go!
Gerk Kreg(ugh, why) decides that, before he shoots Creeper, he wants to know who he really is. No, you fool! Didn’t you learn? Punch only! No questions!
In attempting to rip his wig off, we learn something interesting.
That’s right, the molecular rearrangement device doesn’t just change his clothing and administer a dose of serum, it actually fuses that stuff to him. The wig, the rug, the makeup, the suit, none of it can be removed when he is Creeper.
Oh, the implications! The horrible, horrible implications.
Everyone’s startlemant at this revelation gives Creeper a chance to punch his way free and escape. You see! He got the lesson!
Jack thought that Kreg might be the Terror, but didn’t manage to get any proof in that punch-fest, so he moves on to the next name he had been given, that of Hack Axeley, a...private detective? With that name? Could’ve sworn he’d be either a hitman or a lumberjack.
Hack wants nothing to do with any of this, clearly being too busy working out of a closet with a gorgeous window view. Seriously, it is crowded in there.
Jack decides to do as Axeley suggests-go ask Cleary the lawyer. Who promptly runs him out. Not a big surprise there, Jack is no longer a reporter, nor is he a detective. He is small-time TV network security. Buuuut, Cleary’s defensiveness has made Jack suspicious, so he decides to go back in, in costume.
Up the side of the building.
In broad daylight.
Where everyone can see him.
Still wanted by the police.
BrainTrust.jpg
To get away, he hops a few buildings, drops into an alley, and switches back to Jack.
I wasn’t kidding in the previous review, he seriously does this all the damn time. Oh, and now he remembers Vera, and that he has an actual job.
Love interest, everybody!
She wants to punish him for ditching her by making him walk her dog in the rain. Is that all? What the heck is he got to gripe about, nowadays they’d have his job. Again!
Well, he caves, and they head back to his place to grab an umbrella. She might be a shameless fame-seeker, but Vera is no monster! However, the Terror is! And he is waiting in Jacks apartment to get the drop on him, fully armed with the Punch Only philosophy!
He was not, however, expecting Vera’s Shriek Like a Banshee Technique!
The name of the game in this issue is Jack Gets Ambushed. But the Terror makes a run for it, figuring Vera’s screaming will have attracted too much attention. Jack immediately ditches Vera yet again, to chase after him.
Nice working with you Jack.
Forth comes the Creeper, and so commences The Chase! Which takes up the rest of the comic, with one small break.
Here’s a bonus: My favorite panel in this issue. Get a look at those hands. It might be worth mentioning here that Ditko also helped create Spiderman. I wonder if there’s a way we could tell?
No time to contemplate now, time for another ambush!
Gosh darnit Jack, just look behind you every now and again!
We get a dazzling rooftop fight out of this. There’s fisticuffs! Close calls! And of course...
Ass shots!
The Terror makes his escape. Again. Jack puts two and two together and gets a high value of three. In other words, the Terror waiting at Jacks apartment means that Gerk Kreg can’t be the Terror, because Jack didn’t question him as Jack-only as the Creeper. Only two fellows know that Jack Ryder was researching the Terror, and he decides to drop in on one of them, the misleadingly named Hack Axeley.
Who is just so dead, you guys.
Worried for the safety of the lawyer Cleary, he phones to warn him to stay low, then goes forth to question the late Axeleys secretary, Ida Horn.
Fear his swayed hip! Become powerless before the provocative pose! The distractionary merit of the skimpy outfit is proven yet again!
While she is sufficiently terrified-partially by Creepers questions and vague threats, but mostly by his sexy, sexy photoshoot vogueing- He notices something cleverly hiding behind her drapes.
The Terror is truly a master of stealth. Especially since there isn’t even a window back there.
More brawling for our champion and his nemesis! Oh, but this time, there is a maverick contender!
Kick his ass, baby! No, wait...
Uh...I don’t think that phrase means what you think it means...But whatever, Creeper has recognized the Terror’s voice, and the jig is up! Almost.
Aw, I kinda liked her. It’s too bad her legs have detached from her body. But enough of that! Resume the chase!
Just swinging about in empty space, in a storm, in the darkened city. Badass. But they have been spotted by those who are out for their blood. So now that he’s got him, what does Creeper do?
Freaking publicly unmasks the Terror, revealing him to be Hack Axeleys assistant! Remember? This guy?
He said two words while Jack was there. He was clearly super important and involved, oh yeah. And now his face is uncovered and visible...In front of everybody who wants a chance to murder him. Great job, Jack. This guy is sure to survive until his court date.
No, nevermind, Creeper drops every single one of the gangsters by himself because he’s the title character. How could I forget. The police reap a bumper crop of crooks, and Jack escapes, but not without surveying his work.
He’s not addicted, he can quit any time he wants.
And so our comic comes to an end with Jack and Vera bickering. How romantic.
While this is the first issue of the miniseries proper, it is completely removed from the story as a whole, presenting us only with a mediocre mystery, and a lot of awesome fight scenes. The real story starts next time, in Beware the Creeper #2, coming soon!

Somehow love has been so idealized as positive and healthy form of bond, that the reality which is that lot of romantic relationships are dysfunctional on one level or another is denied. In the case of Kwon Joo and Tae Gu, the romance is impossible: she will never accept him but the attraction is real on his side (the writer pushed it since ep11) and it humanizes him a little bit. So playing with this fantasy makes sense, is not harmful and wouldn't be a first in fiction...
The issue I have is that people assume because there is attraction, it must mean romantic (or sexual). Tae-gu is definitely fascinated by Kwon-joo, but it’s because he views her as an elusive prey. For someone who seems to have had a fairly easy life when it comes to killing people (I mean, when you come right down to it, his father literally buys “unwanted” people for him hunt and kill, just as though they were toys), here is one that is intelligent and fights back. In fact, I think a large part of his giddy glee when he saw her wall of evidence and red string is the discovery that she has also been hunting him. She is no normal prey.
[More after the jump! My apologies to mobile users, and if you’re coming to this on my tumblr page and not your dash, Anon, you’ll probably need to click the post to get the rest of the answer since this theme doesn’t always put a “more” link when I use it on an ask.]
But she is still just that to him – prey. I can’t agree that his attraction to her “humanizes” him because the show has taken great pains to convince us that he’s not really human. He’s been repeatedly called a monster and the devil (and, to be honest, it’s easy to believe he is just that when he has taken such joy in killing anyone that has possibly hurt him or stood in his way).
To him, Kwon-joo is not a person. She is something to be toyed with, to be teased and tormented until he finally sees fit to give the final blow.
I actually think it’s pretty interesting that the show hasn’t placed him in any romantic or sexual light*. Even though he’s a young and handsome chaebol (at least, to those who don’t know about his murderous tendencies), he’s not been shown partying around with a gaggle of women, or even just one woman. When Jin-hyuk looked into his past, there was no record of a scandal, and I presume that includes scandals with women (or men – hey, I’m not gonna judge, but I know Dramaland and its heteronormative default). I very much doubt he often brings dates home, since he seems more interested in bringing dead bodies home instead.
That’s not to say Tae-gu has no sexual desire, but it’s notable that his idea of power and dominance is through straight-up brutality and not through sex. He’s killed women before, but from what we’ve seen, hasn’t tried to rape them. Instead, he gets his jollies from the hunt and the sensation of crushing their skulls.
Which, again, is why I give a serious, serious side-eye to those who want to ship him with Kwon-joo. She is an amazing woman who’s worked hard to get where she is, even when no one else believed her. She’s careful and smart as she figures out not only how to save those under the Golden Time (okay, maybe not that careful and smart because c’mon stop going to creepy empty hallways without back-up!), but also in accumulating information that gradually lead her to discover that Tae-gu is the killer she’s been searching for all these years. To her, Tae-gu is the monster that we all know he is. He killed her father, he’s killed so many others – he’s ruthless and shameless. He’s evil and he must be brought to justice.
So for someone to go “eeeee, I ship it!” just because both characters have an obsessive determination to hunt the other feels like it trivializes just how much Tae-gu has hurt and damaged her life. Not just that he killed her father, but thanks to the cover-up by his father and Sang-tae, he made her lose her job and respect within the community. She was treated as a laughingstock and something to be scorned. Yes, she is strong and resilient, but he ruined her life. And he plans to ruin it even more, just for kicks. He knew that his visit to her apartment would scare her, and yet he couldn’t hide his laughter. That is what makes him happy – making her fear for her life.
While I don’t know how the final two episodes will play out, at this point in the show, there’s really no way that Tae-gu can be redeemed. There’s no “oh my mother abandoned me when I was a baby boo-hoo” story that can possibly excuse his murderous behavior. At this point, the only truly “honorable” thing he could do is either confess to his crimes and spend a lifetime in prison, or fall on his sword (kettlebell?) and kill himself.
Perhaps if this writer spent more time developing the characters, there could be some hope. But as it stands right now, he has shown himself to be nothing but pure evil. There is no goodness in him. There is no saving him.
It is true, though, that relationships are inherently messy and so many of them are filled with bad decisions. Maybe I would actually like rom-coms more if they didn’t try to convince me that two diametrically opposed people would suddenly fall in love and live happily ever after, just because the writers said so. Maybe I would suffer less from second-lead syndrome if the male leads weren’t persistently written in such a way that I would instinctively label them as abusive (either emotionally or psychologically, and even sometimes physically), and wish the woman would run the hell away and never look back.
Then again, I think “love conquers all” is utter bullshit, especially with romance. I will, however, happily accept more stories of love that is familial and platonic, because, to me, those are the most endearing and sustaining. That’s why I give only a vague side-eye to those who want to ship Kwon-joo with Jin-hyuk. Part of me understands it – they’re the leads, they’re thrown together, they have to learn to trust and rely on each other. It makes sense, since most dramas would probably go there anyway. But I love that there’s been no hint of romance between them, simply because there aren’t enough platonic male-female friendships represented in media, especially in mutual work environments (where platonic friendship actually makes the most sense, since dating in the workplace is incredibly messy and often ends in disaster, although you wouldn’t know it by most of Dramaland’s offerings).
So I’m not saying “kill it with fire” to a Kwon-joo/Jin-hyuk ship because I can see how these two co-workers, thrown together in a multitude of intense situations as they pursue the same goal, could be appealing to someone. Jin-hyuk has learned to respect Kwon-joo, and is not out to sabotage her. He actually supports her and listens to her.
I am saying “kill it with fire” to a Kwon-joo/Tae-gu ship because it pits her with someone who doesn’t see her as human and only sees her as a thing to amuse him until he decides she’s no longer worth his time. It diminishes who she is as a woman or even simply as a person. He is a monster, and I’m repulsed by the unspoken implication that she could “save” him because of the attraction (or supposed “love”) he has for her. Not that’s what everyone thinks when they consider this so-called ship, but it is the standard representation when we see this kind of dynamic in fiction – the “bad boy” that the woman will save through the power of her sparkly “I’m not like the other girls” vagina. (Again, Tae-gu is not some moody, broody chaebol/cursed vampire/hurt momma’s boy. He is an unrepentant psychopath who gets joy out of tormenting the most challenging prey he’s yet encountered.)
I get it, though. I know that it’s somehow so easy to default to crackling chemistry and want to ship all the things, no matter what, no matter how terrible they are. Some of the best (worst?) ships come from this.** The attraction is there, even if it is only sadistically one-sided. And even though I don’t read fanfiction, I know there are enough of the “oh hell no” ships out there that people are gonna ship what they’re gonna ship, no matter the logistics or actual characterizations. Maybe someone’s cooking up a theory that says Tae-gu will eventually realize the error of his ways and spend the rest of his life in prison pining for the one woman who got away. Or maybe someone’s embracing the insanity and is like “this shit is fucked up but damn the sex is hawt.”
In the end, I guess I’m just too fond of Kwon-joo as a character and a woman, and everything she represents in terms of her intelligence and desire to help people even as she longs for justice in her own life, to see her linked romantically to a murdering psychopath – no matter how gorgeous his cheekbones are.
*of course, as we all well know, Kim Jae Wook is hella sexy and I’m not gonna deny I’d probably do some terrible things for a few minutes in heaven with him, but that’s the actor, not the character.
**for example, even though I know, instinctively, that these two are terrible for each other and will forever end in tears, you can tear the LoVe*** from my cold dead hands. They are Epic and will always be Epic.
***Logan/Veronica from Veronica Mars, who I immediately started shipping**** from the first “Annoy, tiny blonde one, annoy like the wind” and still get a little tingly from that first kiss as the camera cranes outward and “Momentary Thing” plays.
****and I suppose someone could argue that “well you ship [problematic thing] so stop being a cry-baby about other people shipping [problematic thing], and besides, it’s just fiction*****, so who cares what other people do with fictional characters?” To which I say “dude this is tumblr I will overthink whatever the hell I want and also women should not be shipped with brutal psychopaths who only see them as a means for their sadistic pleasure, especially when those psychopaths have totally and unrepentantly ruined those women’s lives and will kill them after they’ve had their fun.”******
*****yeah, it’s just fiction, but stories matter and if I can smash one patriarchal belief that a woman can save a broken and screwed up guy just because he lurves her then I think I will have fulfilled a purpose that I didn’t know I had but I will gladly accept.
******is2fg no one tell me there’s a fanfic out there where Tae-gu is revealed to be a necrophiliac bc there’s not enough brain bleach out there to unsee that image even though it would probably make total sense, dammit.
#so many footnotes#the issue of an idealized and faulty view of romance in fiction is pretty much a whole 'nother essay#probably a worthwhile essay too#also did i mention that tae-gu is a psychopath?#because he is#Anonymous#ask
