i haven't gotten to do a deep dive blaseball numbers question in a while. so when @leonstamatis asked a question and i realized i was curious, i got excited.

how common/likely is it for a blb player to have a completely unique name that they do not share with anyone. a first and last name, neither of which has been given to anyone else yet.

TLDR: 5.5% of all randomly-generated names are fully unique, and 7% of randomly-generated names of beta players are fully unique within the beta.

but let's break it down a little more.

so first thing's first: i needed a list of players. a quick check with sibr and i ended up using astrology to get two lists: one of all the players from the beta/gamma teams, and one of all the players on delta/coronation teams. i merged the lists and made a note of when players first appeared: beta, coronation, coffee cup, prehistory, the forbidden short circuits teams that didn't make it onto the website, you get the idea.

final list: 5,072 names. boy howdy.

next: nonrandom names! a lot of names were generated in nonrandom ways, like replicas (which are all named after the original player), coffee cup teams (where the artists/data witches/real game band were all manually named), and even things like evelton mcblase ii and bontgomery mullock, where the name is based on another randomly generated name.

list of random names: 4,876. if that's not 3.8% more manageable then i don't know what is!

from there the steps were pretty simple. separate the names into first/given names and last/surnames, see how many of each of those was unique, and then see how many names were not shared with anyone else.

so looking at all of the 4,876 players randomly generated ever at all:

752 have unique first names (15.4%)

926 have unique surnames (19%)

259 have completely unique names (5.3%)

most of the 259 unique names come from prehistory, with an overwhelming 51%, followed by 26% from beta and 13% from the coronation era.

of course, most of us are here primarily for the beta, so how does that stack up? there are 973 names generated that were on beta teams, either in active play or in the shadows. of those 973 names,

227 have unique first names (23%)

250 have unique last names (25.7%)

68 have completely unique names (7%)

for me, this all naturally leads to another question: what are the most common names? across all 4,876 players the most common first names are:

based on these numbers, which names are the least unique - that is to say, who has the most other players that match either their first or last name?

juan murphy (6 other juans, 11 other murphys)

eliot schofield (8 other eliots, 9 other schofields)

sebastian owens (11 other sebastians, 6 other owenses)

dimi santana (11 other sebastians, 6 other santanas)

and the final question: what full names have been randomly generated more than once? there are 8, and all of them happened in short circuits:

and notably, the pairs of candy finnegan and layla pork were within the same short circuit! every other pair was across two different circuits.

Jessica Telephone also travelled a lot, because literally everyone wants her! Now she sucks at Blaseball, and I want her even more.

oh yeah i still have a bunch of those "say the name of a character and i'll tell you a bunch of stuff i just made up about them" asks in my inbox. welp! best time to answer an ask is when you get it, second best time is.....weeks later

-clone. created by...the spies?? the league? not sure. the spies never told eve where she came from and she never asked.

-not a very....good clone. epic cloning attempt fail. came out kind of goopy and not exactly human. human shaped at least but for a while she couldn't even maintain that shape all the time.

-puts up a front of being evil and mean and not caring what other people think most of the time. it's...somewhat effective. almost no one has ever actually been intimidated by her but she's definitely made people not want to be around her! which unfortunately creates this self-fulfilling prophecy of "people don't like me -> pretend i don't care and be evil -> this makes people not like me -> continue acting like i don't care". :(

-however!! if she is in a place or with someone where she doesn't feel like she has to put on that front, eve is actually very enthusiastic and bubbly (although she'd probably resent being called bubbly). very much like that tumblr post that's like "ehehe!!! i giggle and kick my legs while thinking of violence" and "girl writing in her diary with a pink glitter gel pen but she's just writing 'violence and killing and killing and violence' over and over again". but like the violence is cartoon violence? filled with joyous whimsy even if the joyous whimsy is mostly about explosions

-peridot stevenuniverse energy. like a lot.

-did Not like being on the spies. doesn't really like to think about her time on the spies at all. doesn't hold a grudge against any of the players (anymore), but still gets twitchy even if they're just going to houston for an away game

-not really sure what evelton the original thought of her. thinks of her? she never really talked to him. tried to avoid it as much as she could, actually. only kind of regrets it now

-loved the mechanics, a lot. made friends, built all sorts of rube goldberg contraptions, became wanted for numerous counts of osha violation, felt wanted for the first time in maybe her whole life. (aside from being wanted for the crimes. that's a different thing.) however at the end of season 17 the mechanics had the worst record in the league and eve felt like she was dragging them down and she didn't want to do that. so she left.

-while on the lift evelton mcblase ii got swept elsewhere for i think the first time ever? except for one incident where she returned in the same game. anyway they were swept and flipped negative and during their time Elsewhere they had a lot of time to think. and the thought they emerged with was "hmm. what if i was a girl."

-(it is important to Me Personally that eve is like "yeah i was a boy at one point but maybe not really and then later i was a girl". however she is very insistent that gender aside she has never been evelton mcblase)

-the mills are the first team since the mechanics that she stays with for multiple seasons :,) they are important to her because they make her deal with the consequences of her actions but also make it clear that those consequences will not be "we stop wanting you around". if you put eels in the hudson river we will force you to learn about the ecosystem of the hudson river and work to correct the damage you have done but you will still have a room in the apartment and we will still want you to be here. excuse me i made myself cat crying emoji

-likes brecken broken ridge a lot, is taking surprisingly well to being a theater kid. has complicated feelings about there now being no evelton mcblase around for anyone to compare her to. she got her wish: she's just eve, and there's no other her. and that's...good, right?

-final and most important thing: during her time on the mills eve regularly goes down to wall street and does this. with the voice and everything

close your eyes and count down from ten, in which magi ruiz and max stay in new york after the first underbracket wild card game of season 22. why? eve mcblase ii has just faxed out of the shadows and may or may not have left some (evil) science experiments on the sound system unfinished. two psychoacoustics experts! eve! science buddies! all this and more

MaX could see Eve chewing her lip where the mask had been pushed up a bit. “I’d never turn down a — a loyal pair of minions, even if we’re on different teams, but… don’t you need to get back for tomorrow’s game?” she asked xem.

Magi shrugged; MaX echoed the motion. “Nah,” xe said. “Magi can email me back in the morning.”

“Email you?”

“Do it all the time,” Magi said. “Xe says it tickles.”

Eve nodded. Confusion, acceptance, then amazement. An excited little laugh, half giggle, half cackle, spilled from behind the mask. “E-mail… after we complete my magnet opus, you’re showing me how to use this ‘evil mail’ on people.” Then she ducked her head, just a little, looking at MaX sidelong. “… right?”

MaX laughed. “Yeah! Magi can evil-mail me back to you. And then you can evil-mail me somewhere. Evil-mail… eve-mail…” Xer hands flapped a bit, seeing the happy reaction that little joke got. Names were important like that.

dottie + the mechs for the 3 sentence prompts?

She's supposed to be the careful one, it's the one thing she's supposed to be better at, but she still gets lost in the Core sometimes. She'd brush it off as being paranoid, but she knows in her gut that it doesn't like her. That the vast labyrinth of pipes and wires and machinery is just as upset to have her here as everyone else is.

"I don't wanna be here either!" they shout into the empty hallway. It echoes down the corridor before it fades, and they're left with the ambient hum of the Pillars. It's too quiet and too loud all at the same time. Dottie knows she's going insane, because she actually misses Missouri for once.

"This place doesn't like newcomers," a voice says from behind her.

When she's done screaming out if surprise, she turns around to find Evelton clambering out of a panel on the side of the wall, cackling at her. She sighs, and tries to frown at him, even though her heart is still racing.

"I thought you were in Chicago," they say, just to make him stop laughing at them.

The statement seems to actually catch him off guard. "They want to make me fight fires! And help people! It's disgusting. I had to do anything in my power to escape that hellhole!"

"It can't be worse than the Core. This place still hates people like us." they respond. The Core hates everyone, of course, but certain people—people like Evelton, people like Dottie, intrusions on the very universe—gain a special level of ire.

"Yes, well, but no one expects me to be here!" He exclaims, "And, my uh, friends," Evelton's voice drops to a near whisper, like he's ashamed of what he's admitting, "all live here."

Dottie quirks an eyebrow at him, earning more sputtering and a flustered "Shut up!" in response.

"What are you doing here, then, Evelton?" they ask, just to give him an out.

"I'm lost" he says, matter of factly. There's no shame in getting lost in the Core, at least among newcomers. Not even Evelton pretends he knows his way around.

"Well then," Dottie smiles at him, "how about we be lost together?"

Round 3 notable moments & Round 4 matches

Notable Round 3 moments:

First and foremost, because I was obsessing over this: Juke lost against Declan by 9% (Juke got 45.5%, Declan got 54.5%). I stg I checked this match every couple of hours, and it was INTENSE. Juke started out winning (because there were, like, two votes, lol), then Declan, then Juke, etc etc etc until Declan won.

The closest match was Luis Acevedo vs. Nagomi McDaniel, with a difference of 4.4%. Luis got 47.8% of the vote, and Nagomi got 52.2% of the vote.

The second closest match was Forrest Best vs. Finn James, which was DEFINITELY the most intense. Lots of propaganda for those guys. In the end, Forrest Best won with 52.7% of the vote. Finn James got 47.3%.

Logan Horseman vs. Pedro Davids had the biggest difference between votes, with Logan getting 18.8% of the vote, and Pedro getting 81.3%

The biggest upset was Axel Campbell vs. Bentley Finnegan. Axel got 45% and Bentley got 55%. Axel was seeded as 68 out of 90, while Bentley was seeded at 36. HOWEVER, Bentley was added to the popularity poll a few hours after it was posted, because for some reason, Bentley and Nico were not on the list of Every Baltimore Crabs Player Ever.

Also, I was right: Trinity beat Flattery's ass. In fact, the only new epoch Crab left in this bracket is Declan, who was the highest seed, at 90.

Just realized that I never said how many rounds there will be: There's 7 rounds total, including semi-finals and finals.
