Episode 598: I thought you might be looking for Adam
Occult expert Timothy Eliot Stokes is searching the room in the long-deserted west wing of the great house of Collinwood where heiress Carolyn has been hiding Frankenstein’s monster Adam since #539 in July. Strange and troubled boy David Collins saunters into the room and greets him with a casual “Hello, professor.” When a flustered Stokes makes up a story about Carolyn sending him to the room to…

Voice claim time! Disclaimer, some of these are from what I think are slightly more niche shows/movies, but whatever. Also there are a few “smaller” characters I just have exact voices for so I’ll be including them.
Oh, and apologies in advance for the rambling. I’m trying to be as clear as possible but some of these voices are so hard to pin down.
Nick: a mix of all the male country artists/bands I listen to-Jordan Davis, Blake Shelton, Old Dominion, etc. He’s kind of just generic “guy with a relatively subtle Southern accent.” Also there’s a bit of Tom Holland for some reason.
Sel: Several different voices at different points, and kind of a combination. 1. JD from Heathers-specifically the World Premiere Cast, and even more specifically his voice during Seventeen. 2. Jordan Davis 3. My Chorus Dad Thayer (I have no way to explain his voice-it’s a very very subtle southern accent, very low, and very Sel.)
Bree: I don’t actually know how to describe this bc Bree’s voice isn’t something I’ve ever heard. It’s the voice I hear when Tara speaks-Tara is a character I do text RP as-but there’s no good comparison to that. I can’t mimic it. It’s just slightly different than my voice-enough to be obviously different, but subtle enough that trying to recreate what I hear comes out awful. Closest I’ve heard is probably either Taylor Swift or Tenile Arts, but those are both too far off from mine.
Alice: Erin from the Lore OlymPOD podcast. Yes, I read Lore Olympus, come at me. She’s kind of the default “best friend” voice, actually.
Mariah: You know that trope of the Black woman at the post office who calls you “sweetheart” and is incredibly Southern? That’s Mariah. I know it’s probably closer to Patricia and that Mariah’s 20-something, but hush. Probably the closest I know of is Millie’s first voice in Helluva Boss.
Valec: Asmodeus from Helluva Boss. And for some reason he turns into Angel Dust when he’s mocking/taunting/fighting with Sel. I cannot possibly explain this, don’t ask.
Lord Davis: Striker from Helluva Boss mixed w/Blake Shelton
Issac: The Wolf from Into The Woods, specifically when he’s trying to lure Little Red and being very obviously evil.
Tor: Stella from Helluva Boss.
Evan: Connor from Dear Evan Hansen.
Felicity: Octavia from Helluva Boss but not depressed. Well, not until Bloodmarked.
Anyone else have really specific voice claims that conflict with canon voices? Like… Sel’s definitely a base/baritone, but 2/3 of my voice hcs are tenor voices. And Tor definitely isn’t British, Stella just has the right Bitch Factor.

"Cross Sentenced To Hang May 19," Leamington Post. March 6, 1930. Page 6. --- Death Penalty Imposed For Murder At Chatham - Others Get Long Terms ---- The death penalty was imposed by Justice Jeffrey late Monday afternoon, at Chatham on Charles (Chuck) Cross, 20, of Windsor, for the brutal murder of John Labadie, night attendant of the Thayer gasoline station, during hold-up of his place at an early hour of the morning of September 22. May 19 was fixed as the date of his execution.
Cross' three accomplices in the hold- up received sentences to the penitentiary as follows: John Evans, aged 18, 25 years; Edward Powell, aged 20, 15 years, and John Sanders, aged 20, 15 years. They are all colored and residents of Windor. The condemned man took the death sentence without showing any particular emotion. He reeled slightly as he left the prisoner's dock, but, recovering, walked out of the court unassisted with Provincial Officers Tom Campbell and J. B. Sheff.
Asked if he had anything to say why sentence should not be passed, E. C. Awrie, K.C. stated on his behalf that he did not propose to make any statement at the present time. David Croll of Windsor, counsel for Powell, who at the outset of the assizes was jointly indicated with Cross for murder, but who late in the latter's trial turned King's evidence, made a plea for leniency. Mercy pleas were made on behalf of John Evans and John Sanders last Friday by J. B. Spencer Pitt of Toronto, and Major J. H. Clark of Windsor, respectively.
In delivering sentences, Justice Jeffrey spoke severely to the prisoners, rebuking them for the deliberate manner in which they had planned the hold-up. Addressing Evans, the 18-year-old youth, whom he sentenced to 25 years, the judge stated that he regarded him as the ringleader. Had he been charged with murder, the Judge stated that there would have been not question but that the jury would have returned a verdict of guilty. Passing of sentences came late in the afternoon with the last of the criminal cases sent to a jury. The courtroom was crowded. The death penalty in the one case and the penitentiary sentences in the case of Cross' three accomplices brought to a close one of the most sensational murder trials in the history of the Chatham court. It involved a crime which, at the time, aroused public indignation to a high pitch.
The facts as brought out in evidence were to the effect that shortly after midnight on September 22, Labadie went out of his station to attend to the wants of what he considered to be a passing motoring party. On walking to his station after replenishing the fuel tank he was told to stick 'em up by Cross, according to the testimony of his accomplices. Almost immediately a shot was fired, and two more followed in quick succession, and Labadie crumpled, mortally wounded. He died in the Public General Hospital the next day. The four fled from the scene in their car.
The only clue which police were given at the time was the information of Leonard Walker, a Tilbury farmer, who happened on the scene shortly after the shooting. He chased the car for several blocks and lost it, but was able to describe it. While police entertained suspicions, It was not until Evans was arrested at Cobourg for housebreaking that he made a confession which enabled them to confirm their theories. When the trial opened. Evans and Banders were the two main witnesses on which the authorities relled. But on the second day of the trial Powell, too, turned King's evidence. His story substantiated that of the other two. The three told how the hold-up was planned as they sat in a car near the city limits. and how Cross reached for the gun when Evans had said he would only shoot down in a jam. The three wit nesses testified that Cross fired the fatal shots, after he had told Labadie to stick 'em up.

My book blurb!!
In the nowhere place of Polk county, Texas, Easton comes home from a trip that has secretly left her wounded. She is forced to confide in her closest friend, Thayer, about the extent of her injuries, and he searches high and low for a way to help. But no one has heard of a cure for her strange pain. He fears the worst but she plans to go about life as normal, following through with the job she has been trying to finish for decades. Thayer recruits help from Evan, the only sane—and normal—one in their trio of friends, and smuggles him onto a plane to keep Easton safe while he tries to end things once and for all.
But when the mission goes sideways Easton and Evan are taken by force to an undercover HQ base where all rebels of their kind are corrected. While being held as prisoners they discover the atrocities their leaders are committing in secret and form a rebellion against Jlen Kiana, the head honcho of all things evil. This movement of ex-Accomplishers sets in motion a chain of events that no one can stop, and threatens to be the undoing of even the closest of confidants.
Will their friendship be able to hold up under mind-numbing pain and lifelong secrets or will one last mission be the undoing of a connection that has lasted as long as Evan can remember?
But what will happen if he can’t remember? Will he let his friends lead him back to what was once his, or will stronger influences win his trust?

Lupercalia pt 1.
Tumblr media
ILLUSTRATION BY LABROUSTE DEL., MARY EVANS PICTURE LIBRARY/ALAMY
Chthonic, Apotropaic, Purification, and Fertility
Lupercalia was an annual lustral festival observed in the city of Rome on 15 of Februarius (February). It is described by Plutarch in his 75 CE Romulus:
The Lupercalia, by the time of its celebration, may seem to be a feast of purification, for it is solemnised on the dies nefasti, or non-court days, of the month February, which name signifies purification, and the very day of the feast was anciently called Februata; but its name is equivalent to the Greek Lycaea; and it seems thus to be of great antiquity, and brought in by the Arcadians who came with Evander. Yet this is but dubious, for it may come as well from the wolf that nursed Romulus; and we see the Luperci, the priests, begin their course from the place where they say Romulus was exposed. But the ceremonies performed in it render the origin of the thing more difficult to be guessed at; for there are goats killed, then, two young noblemen's sons being brought, some are to stain their foreheads with the bloody knife, others presently to wipe it off with wool dipped in milk; then the young boys must laugh after their foreheads are wiped; that done, having cut the goats' skins into thongs, they run about naked, only with something about their middle, lashing all they meet; and the young wives do not avoid their strokes, fancying they will help conception and childbirth. Another thing peculiar to this feast is for the Luperci to sacrifice a dog.
There are many important elements to be discussed here, but first we must address a common misconception:
Lupercalia is not the pagan Valentine’s Day.
Pope Gelasius I abolished Lupercalia in 494 CE. There is much uncritical repeating of the myth that Valentine’s Day was instituted in its place, however there is no historical evidence to support this. Pope Gelasius’ letter 100, To Andromachus (found here, regrettably only in Latin), in which observance of Lupercalia is forbidden, makes no mention of Valentine whatsoever. Further, we do not know when celebration of St. Valentine’s martyrdom began, and it is not until 1380 that it is connected to romantic love by Chaucer’s Parlement of Foules.
But what about the love lottery? The first mention of a match-making lottery administered by the Luperci comes from Alban Butler’s 1756 Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints (vol 2, FEBRUARY XIV.ST. VALENTINE, PRIEST AND MARTYR.): "To abolish the heathens lewd superstitious custom of boys drawing the names of girls, in honour of their goddess Februata Juno, on the fifteenth of this month, several zealous pastors substituted the names of saints in billets, given on this day."
This assertion from Butler is transposed from Henri Misson’s M. Misson's Memoirs and Observations in his Travels over England With some Account of Scotland and Ireland.[x] There has been as of yet no evidence found to suggest such a thing took place in Rome.
Nor was Lupercalia replaced with Candlemas. This idea comes from conjecture of Cardinal Caesar Baronius in C16 CE, suggesting that Lupercalia was replaced by the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin (Candlemas). This festival was never celebrated in Rome, however, and the forty-day interval between Christmas and Candlemas means it would have been celebrated no later than February 2.[x]
Lupercalia’s association with Valentine’s Day appears to be the result of a modern desire either to be titillated (Flagellation! Blood! Fertility!) or to provide any explanation at all to questions that we are unable to answer.
I will share my reading regarding the ritualistic importance of each element, the possible origin of the festival, and possible associated deities in an upcoming post.
Khaire 🐺💀🖤
