Electric vehicles are pretty cool.
Until you need to charge it and there isn't a station nearby.
Until the charging station nearby doesn't have the right plugs. (Like having the wrong charger for your phone, but instead it's a whole car.)
Until the charging station is broken.
Until the charging station is being used by someone else.
Until you forget to charge your car overnight.
Until the power goes out and you can't charge your car.
Until you have to drive in freezing temps without the heater because it immediately drops 10 miles off your range, and that 10 miles is what is making sure you get home.
I'm all for electric vehicles, but only if the infrastructure is there to make them practical.
#electric cars#electric vehicles#i'm using my brother's ev fiat and while it's a good little car it's too impractical#on a good day I've got 100 mile range#on a cold day I've got 60 miles#even less with the heater#my dad unplugged the charger yesterday to charge his power tools and forgot to plug my car back in#i couldn't get to work this morning and needed a ride#there are too many things that could go wrong and have gone wrong in just a week#i need a gas car#im in a podunk place with no ev infrastructure

If anyone was wondering, those of us who live in regions with cold weather have realized that purely electric vehicles aren’t actually viable here for YEARS
#posts brought to you by everyone being surprised by this#my gas car battery was having issues with the weather can’t even IMAGINE an EV#not to mention the range issues if you idk live more than 10 miles from everything you need#as someone who thinks about this a lot I think hybrid vehicles are a good option for lots of rural folks but EVs won’t ever be#mine

EV Charging on the Go: Tips for Long Journeys
Embarking on a long journey with an electric vehicle (EV) requires more than a full charge and a sense of adventure—it demands meticulous planning and a keen understanding of EV charging logistics. For many, the thought of long-distance travel in an EV is daunting, but with the right preparation, it can be as smooth as any trip taken in a gasoline-powered vehicle. Let’s explore the best practices for EV charging when you're on the move.
Pre-Travel Planning
Before setting out, a well-planned route is your best tool. Utilize apps and websites that specialize in EV travel, such as PlugShare or A Better Routeplanner, to map out your trip. These services provide real-time data on charger locations and types, availability, and may even offer insights into your expected energy consumption based on your vehicle’s model and driving conditions. Statistics suggest that preemptive planning can reduce charging time by as much as 40%, turning potential hours at charging stations into mere minutes.
Understanding Charger Types
Knowing the differences between Level 1, Level 2, and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) is crucial. Level 1 chargers are your standard household outlets and are impractical for long journeys due to their slow charging speeds. Level 2 chargers offer a faster charging rate, typically adding about 20 to 30 miles of range per hour of charging. However, for the quickest boost, seek out DCFC stations that can charge compatible EVs up to 80% in around 30 minutes. Keep in mind, the availability of DCFC stations can vary widely by region.
Charging Etiquette and Timing
Charge station etiquette is essential. Always check the station's status before plugging in and adhere to any time limits. Peak times can often lead to longer waits, so consider charging during off-peak hours if possible. A recent survey indicated that charging stations are least occupied mid-week and late at night. By avoiding peak times, you not only save time but may also benefit from lower charging rates offered by some networks.
Battery Management
Battery health is paramount for efficient charging. Aim to keep your battery between 20% and 80% charged—this is the sweet spot for lithium-ion batteries found in most EVs. Charging beyond 80% often significantly slows down as the battery management system works to protect battery health. Also, avoid depleting your battery below 20% to maintain its longevity and ensure you have enough charge to reach the next station if one is unexpectedly out of service.
Membership and Payment
Various charging networks have different payment structures and membership options. Some offer discounted rates for members, while others may require a subscription for access. Signing up for memberships ahead of time can not only save money but also reduce the time spent at the charger, as members often enjoy shorter authorization times before charging begins.
Vehicle Preparation
Optimize your vehicle's condition before heading out. Tires should be properly inflated to reduce rolling resistance, and excess weight should be removed to increase efficiency. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, for every 100 pounds of excess weight carried, your vehicle's efficiency can drop by 1%. Furthermore, use your EV’s eco mode, if available, to extend your range by moderating the vehicle's energy use.
Emergency Planning
Even with thorough planning, always prepare for the unexpected. Keep a portable charger on hand for emergency situations, and know the location of Level 1 outlets along your route as a last resort. Maintaining a list of contact numbers for roadside assistance that caters to EVs can be a lifesaver in unforeseen circumstances.
Travelling long distances in an EV doesn't have to be a source of anxiety. With the rapidly expanding infrastructure and increasingly efficient technology, EV charging on the go is becoming more user-friendly. By following these tips, planning effectively, and staying informed, your electric road trip can be as enjoyable as it is eco-friendly.

Oh for sure I'm aware we're nowhere near having batteries that could work for this. Increasing the capacity of the batteries so you can get as far in one charge as anyone should be driving in a day anyway is definitely the sensible focus, as things stand.
But for much smaller battery-driven appliances, like chainsaws and lawnmowers, which are generally designed these days with removable batteries the size of small bricks, being able to keep one battery on the charger while you work and swap them out instead of halting everything so the device can nap extends its usefulness hugely.
So should there be a sufficient leap forward in battery technology to do that with cars, it would make the dang machines much more practical.
Okay also I’ve been driving electric cars long enough now to be really emphatic that the fact that they’re not all automatically built with solar panels in the roofs is a scandal.
And somehow almost every time I tell anyone this they roll their eyes and attempt to explain to me that this would not create a perpetual motion machine because of the limitations of the area relative to the power draw of the motor, which is incredibly annoying because that’s not the point.
Yes it’s possible that driving in the sunshine with a solar collector dripping into the battery would net you a little more mileage on that trip before needing recharge, but the usefulness of a solar-topped electric car is that if you drive it someplace–say, to work–and leave it outside in the sun all day, you’ll definitely have more range available by the time you’re ready to head home.
Also if you fuck up your calculations because of the inefficiency induced by cold weather or something and get yourself stranded without anywhere to charge, like halfway up a mountain or, more likely, six miles from home, you can call for rescue or walk away, come back later, and it’ll be able to move again.
This is important because unlike running out of gas you can’t really go get some electricity.
#i'm also aware of the wiggle problem but i do feel like it would be surmountable#if removable batteries were a goal the connections would be approached very differently#but like no matter how big the one single battery gets#you still have the 'can't use it it's charging' situation#eventually#which puts a lot of hard limits on the usefulness of such a vehicle#that ICE cars do not have#less so if its max range is long enough you almost never hit it so you don't have to fill the whole thing every time you top off#but still#most people who disagree with me on this post are so much ruder and more ignorant lmao ty#even if the distribution system gets up to the level gas stations are at the part where it takes a lot more than ten minutes to fuel up#and you can't go get some fuel on foot#are structural barriers to EVs granting the same kind of mobility as ICE as things stand#and my sci fi proposal is we Make Better Batteries until you *can* put electricity in the car Just Like That

What a difference 60 years makes juxtaposition of Mazda 802 Prototype, 1963 & Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV "Edition R," 2023. Mazda have relaunched the rotary engine in a new version of the MX-30 electric crossover that uses a single rotor Wankel engine as a range-extender. There is no mechanical connection between the engine and the driving wheels, the rotary unit simply acts as a generator while the car's 170PS electric motor powers it. The rotary engine provides the MX-30 with a range of 650km. The Edition R is a special edition of 400 cars to celebrate the return of the rotary motor. The 802 was presented at the 10th Tokyo Motor show and was a prototype for Mazda's first rotary engined production, the Cosmo of 1967.
