Ooooh, it's immensely satisfying to know that there was a Eurymachus appearance in Epic the Musical after all, and that he's the suitor who tried to bargain.

Mental theater in my head says: Eurymachus couldn't see Odysseus circling him like a shark during his part because the room was so dark

No reason why Odysseus would be circling. Or maybe he's intrigued the way a wild predator is intrigued when their targeted prey chooses to talk them down

But none of his words except that last line made any impact. That last line guaranteed an arrow to the jugular.

Since im not very normal when it comes to designing im always more efficient when i design straight up on an illustration so here goes the main suitors :

Antinous (lion🦁) : loud arrogant and imposing. Will laugh at your face and threaten you in cold blood.

Eurymachus (snake🐍): hypocrite manipulative conniving bitch. Will gaslight you with a kind smile. Hates mediocrity

Amphinomous (bear🐻) : he's the answer to choosing a man or a bear. Not inherently evil. He thinks the beggar is funny (not knowing its ody). He is just a guy who's easily influenced by his terrible friends.

Y'know when Ody was like "I need to be a monster to get home, rarwrr"

Yeah, he didn't actually give up Polites' "Open arms" thing until "Six Hundred Strike"

In "Get In The Water" Ody doesn't jump straight to planning, scheeming, attacknng, or anything really. He actually tries to reason with him, to use compassion and sympathy. He tries to relate to Poseidon and apologizes, encouragung him to forgive.

Then when he's in the ocean, sinking, Poli, Eury, and Anticlea sing to him. But their words are different from the usual.

Eurylochus, is encouraging him, rather than criticizing him.

Anticlea is telling him that she loves him, instead of making it seem like he let her down.

But Polites' what he said. That is what gave Odysseus the ability to go Ruthless on Poseidon. Instead of what he's always been saying, which is "This life is amazing, when you greet it with open arms." He now says, "You can relax my friends, I can tell you're getting nervous"

This is him telling Odysseus, "I know what you've been through... Do what you must to see them."

This 'acceptance' is what allows Odysseus to abandon any form of compassion and mercy and why he's able to be as ruthless as he is.

That's also why he was quick to kill Eurymachus, he mentioned open arms, Odysseys didn't need that philosophy anymore, dead.

Also, y'know when he says "My mercy has long since drowned" ?

yeah thats bs. It only drowned like, 4 hours ago, when he was sinking in the ocean. Because yes, the spirits whre pushing him up. But Polites took his philosophy down with him.

so uh yeah.

cuz like. it really puts the image of them looking at him and shrugging "eh, looks enough like her" and just going for him instead into existence and im not sure if thats a good thing or nit

I would be an asshole if I designed a Eurymachus that was a relative of Polites and even resembled him a little bit visually... wouldn't I? :)

My first idea was making him his son but that is the one thing I can't do because Eurymachus gets introduced in the Odyssey in the same breath as mentioning his father Polybus. But any other kind of relative is not out of question, since Polites' family tree is totally blank (as far as I know)

Eurymachus claims (in the original Odyssey) that Odysseus held him on his knees and fed him pieces of meat when he was a child. That would fit wonderfully with him being related to someone who's close to the king.

And it would be even more painful when he tries to use the "open arms" phase to appeal to Odysseus and gets killed anyway.

(Of course I headcanon that Eurymachus was a two faced bitch who only did that to save himself (and possibly even to get another try at killing Odysseus once he lowered his bow & got close) <3 no sincerity behind his open arms)

Odysseus killing someone who is a fake copy of his dear departed friend and uses the same phrase........ pain.

I think the image of Antinous I have in my head is… I always imagine him as a little way more snobbish rude noble rich kid alongside the violent villain HAHSHW so he’s a bit more pampered looking to me.. idk if I managed to capture that well,, quick scribble w a new brush！🤲
