Igualada (Penedès, Catalonia) during the European Balloon Festival.
They celebrate it ever summer since 1997 and gather about 50 balloons for 4 days. The city also gets decorated with "wind igloos" that host concerts, poetry recitals, storytelling for children, and workshops.

Daily update post:
Yesterday, there were a lot of unofficial initiatives and ceremonies across Israel to commemorate one month since the massacre. It wasn't official, because the state is still in the middle of a war, but regular people felt the need to connect with the Jewish custom of marking 30 days since the death of a loved one. In many places, people stood, wherever they happened to be, for a minute of silence at 11 in the morning (myself included), or held up posters or yellow balloons in honor of the hostages and the missing persons:
This girl is absolutely awesome:
instagram
Rashida Tlaib has been rebuked for using the hateful chant "From the River to the sea, Palestine will be free." Here's a link to explanations on why it is indeed a call for, at the very least, the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the Jewish ancestral homeland.
On a personal note, I just discovered that another colleague of mine has a sister and BIL held hostage in Gaza. I said before that every Israeli has a "list" of those they know and love affected by this, and it just keep getting longer as we find out more about people's fate on Oct 7, and as the list of fallen soldiers in this war gets longer, too.
I saw a new lie being pushed, that the majority of people in Israel who were killed during Hamas' massacre were soldiers (implying the civilians were never specifically targeted, that they were collateral damage). But the numbers are very different. Out of over 1,400 people murdered on that day, only 348 were soldiers. That's before we get to the confiscated documents showing instructions that clearly stated the goal was civilians, the Hamas terrorists who were captured alive and confirmed this, or the fact that if those terrorists weren't interested in abducting and killing civilians, why take over entire civilian communities? There were no military bases in kibbutz Be'eri, kibbutz Nir Oz, or kibbutz Kfar Azza, there was no army outpost at the Nova music festival. Hamas' terrorists set up blockades on the only road leaving that festival and gunned down anyone trying to escape. Over 260 young people. Not one was in army uniform, driving an army car, or even just... armed. That's targeting civilians intentionally. A baby being placed in the oven, or being beheaded, or tied with wires to an adult and then both being burned alive, or a 14 year old girl being raped and then shot in the head in her bedroom, or firing thousands of rockets into cities, that's not "collateral damage."
The UN general secretary said it's clear something's wrong with Israel's military activity, based on the number of civilians killed in Gaza. Based on the numbers released by the highly unreliable terrorist organization Hamas, the perpetrator of a massacre, an actual crime against humanity, which doesn't allow any external inspectors come into Gaza to verify the numbers.
After Israel has been asking for European countries to send hospital ships, Italy is sending one. Israel is also working with the United Arab Emirates on the UAE being a field hospital next to the Gaza border. As many Gazans have been heeding Israel's call to evacuate from the north, Israel has prolonged the route it's securing against Hamas, to allow them an even safer passage.
Manor Salomon, a successful Israeli soccer player, was criticizing UEFA (the European soccer federation) for their refusal to denounce Hamas. For this, his IG account was closed. Prominent Israeli voices ARE being silenced.
This is 19 years old Yoav Mellev, who on Oct 7 was fighting on the Zikim beach, where Hamas terrorists landed in boats, and were massacring civilians. After he got badly wounded, he left a note, in which he said (as conveyed by his mom) that it was the best 20 minutes of his life, because he got to defend people. He died of his wounds. May his memory be a blessing.

Paralympics in France open with stunning ceremony
French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced the start of the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games in Paris.
The opening ceremony of the games, which lasted more than three hours, this time took place outside the stadium. The historic Place de la Concorde near the Champs-Elysees welcomed more than 4,000 athletes.
More than ten temporary stands were set up on the square. French police and military took strict security measures at the opening ceremony. Some metro stations in the city were closed for security reasons, many streets were closed to traffic. About 15,000 law enforcement officers were involved in the ceremony, but the feeling of a light summer evening was in the air as the sun slowly set on the French capital.
International Paralympic Committee president Andrew Parsons also attended the opening ceremony.
Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet said in his speech:
Dear athletes, welcome to the country of love and revolution. Rest assured, tonight, no Storming of the Bastille, no guillotine, because tonight the most beautiful revolution starts — the paralympic revolution. It’s a sweet revolution that will change all of us deeply.
The live show began at the foot of the obelisk on Place de la Concorde with Canadian musician, songwriter and producer Chilly Gonzalez performing at the piano.
Artists with disabilities and impairments shouted the countdown and French singer Christine and the Queens performed Edith Piaf’s “Je ne regrette rien.”
The event, led by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman and featuring 500 artists, was dubbed “Paradox, from discord to concord,” a thinly veiled reference to the Place de la Concorde, where the ceremony concluded in front of more than 50,000 spectators. The parade of athletes from 168 delegations started from the bottom of the Champs-Elysees in a festive atmosphere, with volunteers cheering and dancing.
As the French closing in on the parade entered the square, the theme to Yann Tiersen’s “Amelie” played over the loudspeaker, and the crowd chanted “Allez Les Bleus” with the glittering Eiffel Tower as a backdrop.
Last month’s Olympic opening ceremony was held in torrential rain, which failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the spectators gathered along the Seine River. The ceremony went off without any security glitches, although it sparked controversy over a scoreboard that appeared to parody Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper.”
The Paralympic flag was carried by Britain’s John McFall, who won a bronze medal in the 100 metres at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games and became the first person with a disability to be actually cleared for future flights by the European Space Agency.
The ceremony ended with the lighting of the competition flame bowl by five athletes. The balloon-shaped bowl rose into the sky above Paris after the lighting, symbolising the start of the 2024 Paralympics.

You know, I actually see parallels with this and construction.
The USA has a tradition of balloon framing, which is the use of very long timbers on the exterior of a building.
See, by the time Europeans got to the Americas, they had largely depleted European forests. Remaining old growth hardwoods were largely reserved for shipbuilding, and they had to use shorter timbers for things like home construction. As a result, Europeans had pretty advanced carpentry techniques with very complex joinery.
Then they got to the Americas. The Americas of the time were absolutely full of old growth forests. So much wood, you'd think it was Folsom Street Festival.
Anyway. What Colonial Americans did not have were twofold: metal tools, and skilled craftsmen. The former because the British imposed crippling taxes on metal imports, in part to Make More Money, but also to keep the colonies from being independent; they also restricted colonial industry from making their own. There are all sorts of examples of wooden shovels and gearing, because they worked with what they had. Second, well, skilled craftsmen weren't generally the people who wanted to uproot their lives and set out to another continent.
Since both tools and tool users were in short supply, but raw materials were not, colonials developed construction techniques which optimized for what they had. In frontier regions, that meant the log cabin: a structure made out of whole-ass logs instead of milled timber. Like, it used something to the effect of six times as much wood as a frame house, ridiculous by European standards, but you can build one with pretty unskilled labor and without any tools more advanced than an axe. And in more settled areas where they did have milled lumber, balloon framing: No complicated joinery, just Really Long Planks held together with as few nails as you could get away with (because nails were expensive, yo).
So that's what I'm seeing here. Fabric, it seems, was relatively cheap - but sewing took skill and special tools. So you go out, you get some fabric, you use the pins you've already got, et voila, new outfit!
People are pretty damned clever at optimizing for what they have. And you can tell a lot about a society for what they use in large quantities and what they use sparingly.
Costume. Chitons.

As the leaves turn crisp and golden and the aroma of pumpkin spice fills the air, one thing is certain—Thanksgiving is just around the corner!
For many, it’s a time to gather with loved ones, share a feast, and reflect on gratitude. But who says you have to celebrate at home this year? Why not add a touch of adventure to your holiday season?
Traveling during Thanksgiving can transform the occasion into something extraordinary. Whether you dream of a cozy cabin retreat, a bustling city adventure, or a tropical escape, countless destinations await to help you create lasting memories. Here are some top picks for celebrating Thanksgiving in style this year:
1. The Classic Countryside Retreat
Picture a roaring fireplace, a table filled with freshly baked pies, and breathtaking views of rolling hills. For a heartwarming Thanksgiving, consider destinations like Vermont, Colorado, or the Smoky Mountains. Many resorts and vacation rentals in these areas offer traditional Thanksgiving feasts, allowing you to fully embrace the holiday spirit while surrounded by nature.
2. A City That Sparkles
If you thrive on excitement, cities like New York or Chicago might be calling your name. Thanksgiving in New York means one thing—the legendary Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Watch vibrant floats, enormous balloons, and marching bands in person, then savor a holiday meal at one of the city’s top restaurants. Meanwhile, Chicago offers its own parade, festive markets, and ice skating, making it perfect for those seeking a blend of tradition and urban charm.
3. Beachside Bliss
Who says Thanksgiving requires sweaters? Trade cold weather for sandy shores with destinations like Hawaii, Florida, or the Caribbean. Imagine enjoying turkey and all the trimmings with an ocean view—or perhaps swapping them for fresh seafood. For those who long for sunshine and relaxation, this is the ultimate Thanksgiving twist.
4. A Cultural Feast Abroad
While Thanksgiving is uniquely American, there’s no rule against celebrating it internationally! Head to Europe to explore enchanting Christmas markets that open around this time or to Mexico, where Día de los Muertos celebrations linger into November. Host your Thanksgiving dinner at your accommodation, then spend the rest of your trip immersed in another culture.
5. The All-Inclusive Cruise
Combine travel and relaxation with a Thanksgiving cruise. Many cruise lines offer holiday-themed itineraries featuring festive dinners, onboard entertainment, and exciting shore excursions. Whether you’re sailing the Caribbean, exploring Alaska, or gliding along a European river, a cruise makes for a stress-free and memorable celebration.
Tips for Planning Your Thanksgiving Getaway
- Book Early: Thanksgiving is a high-traffic travel period, so secure flights, accommodations, and dinner reservations well in advance.
- Pack Smart: Bring travel-friendly versions of your holiday traditions, like a mini pumpkin pie or a favorite board game.
- Be Flexible: Avoid the crowds by traveling a few days before Thanksgiving.
- Plan Around Food: Check if your destination offers Thanksgiving dinner options, or prepare to create your own festive meal.
This Thanksgiving, why not combine gratitude with exploration? Whether your journey is near or far, the adventure will be just as memorable as the celebration itself.
Where will you go this Thanksgiving? Let us know your dream destination!

Exploring New Mexico: A travel guide to the Land of Enchantment
New Mexico, often called the Land of Enchantment, is a stunning vacation destination, celebrated for its diverse landscapes and Native American, Spanish and Anglo-American cultural influences. Before European colonization, the region was shaped by the traditions of Hispanic and Native American people.Today, the state’s compelling history is a main attraction for visitors often awestruck by its rugged and varied terrain.NEW JERSEY TRAVEL GUIDE TO EXPLORE SPARKLING BEACHES, THEME PARKS AND MOREFrom the local food and art to the overall character, New Mexico reflects the convergence of cultures to define this unique state.Another reason visitors come to New Mexico is the alluring landscapes, ranging from dry deserts to lush forests. Many people often imagine red rocks, vast deserts and distinctive rock formations of the Southwest when they think of New Mexico. What might surprise new visitors is the white sand dunes, river gorges and dense, evergreen woodlands included in the state’s natural diverse landscape. Here are some of the top locations to put on your New Mexico itinerary: Santa Fe, New Mexico, is the oldest capital city in the United States. Inhabited in 1607, it was officially settled between 1609 and 1610, according to the city’s official website. Originally established with European-style dwellings, the city is full of historical sites and experiences. A visit to Sante Fe can include a trip to the historic Santa Fe Plaza, exploration of the oldest church in America and a visit to one of the many museums, such as the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, where the 20th century artist’s love for Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe is on display. 5 TRAVEL ESSENTIALS TO PACK FOR YOUR SUMMER GETAWAYFamilies visiting the city will enjoy the Santa Fe Children’s Museum, Santa Fe Southern Railway and the Museum of International Folk Art. Albuquerque’s rich history and resulting culture are reasons it is a popular city to visit. Albuquerque was established in 1706, but the city was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Caperton Fertility Institute
Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, is a dynamic mix of history, culture, and modern amenities. Often referred to as ABQ, Burque, or the Duke City, it was established in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost, named after Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, the Duke of Alburquerque.
The city’s history is deeply influenced by Native American cultures, particularly the Tanoan and Keresan peoples who resided along the Rio Grande long before European settlers arrived. Albuquerque’s landscape is marked with petroglyphs, ancient rock carvings that speak to its early inhabitants. The Pueblo of Isleta and Sandia Pueblo are notable for preserving their rich cultural heritage.
Geographically, Albuquerque is located in the Albuquerque Basin, bordered by the Sandia Mountains to the east and the West Mesa to the west, with the Rio Grande flowing through its heart. The city enjoys a high desert climate, with hot summers, mild winters, and low humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
Culturally, Albuquerque is known for its diversity and vibrant arts scene. It hosts the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the world’s largest hot air balloon festival. The city’s cuisine is a delightful mix of traditional New Mexican and global flavors. Historical landmarks such as the San Felipe de Neri Church and the Petroglyph National Monument offer insights into the city’s rich past.
Albuquerque is a hub for technology, media, and fine arts, with the University of New Mexico playing a pivotal role in its academic and cultural life. The local economy is supported by healthcare, research, and tourism sectors.
Today, Albuquerque is a bustling metropolis with a diverse population and a cityscape that seamlessly blends historic and modern elements. The city is divided into distinct quadrants, each with its unique character—from the historic Old Town with its adobe buildings to the modern downtown area with skyscrapers.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do in Albuquerque. The Sandia Peak Tramway offers stunning views of the city and surrounding landscapes, while the Rio Grande provides opportunities for water sports and scenic walks along its bosque, a cottonwood forest lining the riverbanks.
The city’s infrastructure supports a variety of transportation options, including highways, the Albuquerque International Sunport, and an extensive public transit system. It is also known for its bike-friendly paths and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods.
Albuquerque is a city that honors its rich heritage while embracing the future. Its unique blend of cultural traditions, historical significance, and modern amenities makes it a fascinating place to explore and live. Whether visiting for the breathtaking balloon festival, exploring its historic sites, or enjoying its vibrant arts scene, Albuquerque has something for everyone.
