For the ask game: 1, 10, 38 and 57 :))
What's your favourite live performance?
Honestly for a band that's been going for 30 years this is an INSANE question. From the ones I've seen online, I've always enjoyed Astoria in 2000 and ofc HAARP. Of Muse gigs that I've actually been to it's gotta be WOTP, if for no other reason than they did Resistance.
10. Favourite non-studio lyrics (demos, live additions, etc.)
Difficult one, probably a tie between 'just like a virgin blows' in live versions of Sunburn, or 'give me complete control' in the Hysteria demo.
38. Favourite Muse instrumental to play?
Not sure if this means actual instrumentals (songs with no lyrics) or just the instrumental part of songs. I'm gonna answer the latter because I don't actually know how to play any of the instrumentals.
Guitar: Reapers or New Born
Bass: TIRO or Cave (not quite got it but made a solid start).
Piano: Ruled by Secrecy (again not done yet but really enjoying it so far).
Voice: HOODOO!!! Glorious and I Belong to You (+Mon Coeur S'Ouvre a Voix).
57. Favourite music video?
Euphoria or Sunburn.
Thank you so much!!!!

My Personal Top 10 KH Music Ranking That Nobody Asked For, because really, I could talk about music all day. So, here we are! :D
(1-5 are songs that overwrote some part of my brain chemistry. 6-10 are amazing and still give me happy brain syndrome upon listening to.)
1. "Nachtflügel" - KH3
Objectively incredible feat of musical composition that should go down in history- that piano work is ridiculous. I don't even know what to say, really. Went into a trance-like state while listening to this for the first time. If this was able to usurp "Enter the Void" for me, you know this is good. When that beautiful, soaring melody comes in around 0:40, you just wanna cry. When that lower, mournful motion comes in around 2:10 mark, just... godly. It's like flying but with darkened angel wings; don't know how else to describe it- menacing but free. I'm bad with describing how music makes me feel, because it's often just so MUCH. Very dynamic, excellent, showstopping, etc. Can't wait for Shimomura to ascend to musician heaven in a chariot of fire.
2. "Enter the Void" BBS
When I first heard this I was filled with such unparalleled levels of energy that I can't communicate effectively. The rhythm from the drums and horns is something primal that you feel in your soul. Feels so heroic. I am going to war /positive. When the strings hit around a minute in, I feel like I'm flying. Around 1:50 in, when the orchestra comes in after that brief break, I legitimately almost cried from the euphoria, haha.
3. "Forze Dell'Oscurita" - BBS/KH3
That intro is just godlike. Not much more to say. Spiritually froth at the mouth with all the Xehanort-related motifs present here. Both versions are awesome AF, with me maaaybe picking the KH3 version if I had to, purely because of that flute trill at the beginning, and those horns.
4. "Musique pour la tristesse de Xion" - 358/2 Days
Beautiful mixture of Riku and Kairi's theme. When it gets to Kairi's leitmotif, the melody is so dreamy and ethereal- absolutely gorgeous.
5. "The 13th Reflection" - KH2
So hype. That's it. So hype. Grandiose and beautiful both in original forms and remastered version. I go bonkers. It's got that Final Fantasy percussive pattern I love.
6. "Enter the Darkness" - BBS Version
The usage of Ventus', Roxas', and ESPECIALLY how Sora's leitmotifs come into the melody are excellently executed and exhilarating. And don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the addition of the electric guitar in the KH3 version, but the original hits in its own way that the other version didn't. And shout-out to that part of "Unbreakable Chains" with Sora's leitmotif but super jazzy and darker in tone. Love that.
The cutscene where this track first started playing in DDD is forever tattooed in my mind, because the visual and musical transition into the fight was magnificent. It's got Destati, it's got Ansem KH1 fight theme. It's good shit.
7. "L'Eminenza Oscura I" - DDD or KH3 version. Both rock.
"You can try."
*WHOOOSH*
*PIANO LIMIT BREAK*
("You can't protect ANYTHING." Damn Ansem, chill out, Riku's just sixteen. Stop capitalizing on his insecurities.)
8. "Sacred Distance" - DDD
The usage of a mournful, trailed off version of Dearly Beloved's piano is so poignant for this ost, as encountering this track after finding out "Dearly Beloved's" significance to Sora and Riku's connection and seeing Sora's dangerous position in the plot at TWTNW signifies that the broken down parts of Dearly Beloved's melody littered throughout the song is no coincidence. It gives the stark feeling something is wrong/missing. I look like that "Patrick Bateman listening to music with his eyes closed" meme while listening to this track. That violin part...
9. "Treasured Memories" - KH1
In the words of someone who overheard my playlist: "That sounds like something I'd play while depressed to stay depressed." It's been immortalized in my mind since. It also reminds me somewhat of the City Ruins piece from NieR: Automata. Very serene and melancholic.
10. "Lazy Afternoons" - CoM version
I loved this version with the leading harmonica so much I didn't care for the KH2 version nearly as much as a result. Y'know that part of Ratatouille where Ego eats the dish and he gets mentally zapped back to his childhood? That's what this song felt like.
Honorable Mentions:
a. "Forze Del Male" - KH1 Version
It just can't be beat. That opening is on par with FFIX's "The Dark Messenger" in terms of memorable villain organ theme intros, for me.
b. "My Heart's Descent" - DDD
My favorite version of the "Dive into the Heart" melodies. Feels dreamlike (lol, wonder why) and so very Important in a way beyond my petty understanding.
c. "The Eye of Darkness"
Cool combat rendition of "Dive into the Heart."
d. "It Began With a Letter" - KH1
So soft. Feels like home.
e. "Keyblade Cycle" - DDD
GROOVIN'.

get to know me ask game
Tagged by@nieves-de-sugui. Thanks, dearie!
RULES: bold the ones that are true & tag 10 people to do it. (I'm not big on meme tagging, and anyway, I seem to be one of the last people on the planet to get around to this thing.)
APPEARANCE
blonde hair // I prefer loose clothing to tight clothing // I have one or more piercings // I have at least one tattoo // I have dyed or highlighted my hair // I have gotten plastic surgery // I have or had braces // I sunburn easily // I have freckles // I paint my nails // I typically wear makeup // I don’t often smile // I am pleased with how I look // I prefer Nike to Adidas // I wear baseball hats backwards
I've wanted to get some piercings in my ears for a few years now but between brokeness and covid stuff I haven't gotten around to it yet. Someday?
I have two tattoos. One is a reference to a song by a band I used to know and the other is in honor of my kids but also some stuff from my own childhood. Both were done by a close friend of mine. A lot of people don't realize I have them, especially the first one, which is on my ribcage. I want to get more tattoos but that may be tough since I can't go back to Texas anytime soon and the idea of working with a new artist here is a huge bummer--no one could take the place of my friend.
I just got my balayage re-done, with purplish ash blond bits, and it's the best thing I've ever done to my hair. Now if the weather would just cool off enough for me to be able to wear it down!
I had cosmetic surgery in middle school to make my ears stick out less.
I'm not super depressed most of the time but I'm prone to anhedonia (difficulty experiencing positive emotions) so I don't smile much and I seldom laugh aloud. Though since I started ADHD meds I started laughing a bit more, which has been nice.
I used to wear makeup a lot more, but I have allergy stuff that makes it hard to wear eye makeup so I've gotten out of the habit. I miss it. It was a good source of gender euphoria.
I'm not displeased with how I look, but saying I'm pleased with it seems a bit strong.
HOBBIES & TALENTS
I play a sport // I can play an instrument // I am artistic // I know more than one language // I have won a trophy in some sort of competition // I can cook or bake without a recipe // I know how to swim // I enjoy writing // I can do origami // I prefer movies to tv shows // I can execute a perfect somersault // I enjoy singing // I could survive in the wild on my own // I have read a new book series this year // I enjoy spending time with friends // I travel during work or school breaks// I can do a handstand.
I can play both guitar and piano, but not very well at all.
I love doing visual art but got out of the habit over the years. I always tell myself that someday I'll go back and take some classes or something, when I have more free time. I would love that. For now I just draw things for my kids sometimes.
I can cook without a recipe but I can't bake without one. That way lies madness.
I swim about as well as I play piano and guitar--I can get it done but it may not be that aesthetically pleasing.
Sometimes I enjoy writing. Other times it's more like a compulsion.
I've read books this year but none that were part of a series so far. The last time I read a series was probably when I read Trollope's Barchester Chronicles a couple of years ago. My latest non-series book was Manning Marable's biography of Malcolm X (the audiobook version, which I highly recommend).
I very rarely get to travel and I'm a bit envious of those who do.
RELATIONSHIP
I am in a relationship // I have been single for over a year // I have a crush // I have a best friend who I’ve known for ten years // my parents are together// I have dated my best friend // I am adopted // my crush has confessed to me // I have a long distance relationship // I am an only child // I give advice to my friends // I have made an online friend // I met up with someone I have met online
Today is my 16th anniversary with my partner (our getting together anniversary, not the wedding one, which is in December). He was my best friend when we started dating.
The friend I'm closest to at the moment is someone I've only known for about four years. I do have some close friends I've known a lot longer, though.
Making online friends and meeting them in "real life" is the best. It's been way too long since I did that. I've made some really important friends that way, including a friend who was my person of honor at my wedding and one of my closest friends in the city where I currently live.
AESTHETICS
I have heard the ocean in a conch shell // I have watched the sun rise // I enjoy rainy days //I have slept under the stars // I meditate outside // the sound of chirping calms me // I enjoy the smell of the beach // I know what snow tastes like // I listen to music to fall asleep // I enjoy thunderstorms // I enjoy cloud watching // I have attended a bonfire // I pay close attention to colors // I find mystery in the ocean // I enjoy hiking on nature paths // autumn is my favorite season
I'm a huge fan of rain and storms. Even though it rains a lot in the PNW, I still miss Central Texas rain. The drizzly days here are nice, don't get me wrong, and overall the weather suits me far better. But I miss big, hard rains with thunder and stuff. I could go for one of those freaky horizontal deluges with golfball-sized hail and thunder that shakes your house. I don't want to be out in it, or not for long. But I'd love to look out the window at one right about now.
Freud wrote about an "oceanic" feeling where human beings have a sense of oneness with the universe (his friend coined the term and he ran with it). It's not a coincidence that this term references the ocean. The ocean just has an effect on the human psyche/nervous system that we haven't begun to understand.
MISCELLANEOUS
I can fall asleep in a moving vehicle // I am the mom friend // I live by a certain quote // I like the smell of sharpies // I am involved in extracurricular activities // I enjoy Mexican food // I can drive a stick shift // I believe in true love // I make up scenarios to fall asleep // I sing in the shower // I wish I lived in a video game // I have a canopy above my bed // I am multiracial // I am a redhead // I own at least 3 dogs
I'm only a mom friend on request and with people I'm close to, but I enjoy my mom friend duties when I get the chance.
Are there people who don't enjoy Mexican food? I miss Tex-Mex so danged much.
Sometimes when I can't fall asleep I make up stories. One of my go-to things is stuff that that might happen after the endings of Austen novels. For example, if Mr. Darcy is going to be Jane Bennet's brother-in-law he is going to have to apologize for the bullshit he pulled when he interfered in her relationship with Bingley. And he'd better do a good job, too.
My favorite song to sing in the shower is Great Potential by Freakwater.
I'm usually shy about tagging so I'm going to forego it this time but if you're reading this, please feel free to use me as an excuse to do this!

Just had the realization that I prefer Left and Right to Euphoria. One comes after each other in my JK playlist and it was weird to realize I like L&R more. The thing is I've never been the biggest Euphoria fan. When I was a baby Army and listened to it for the first time, I thought it was generic and that Serendipity was better. I only started enjoying Euphoria after seeing the live performance, which is truly magical (JK flying over the fans and serenading them is iconic). I actually love the piano version though. I used to listen to it a lot. It's so comforting and pretty, and the "MV" is so cute. Plus, Euphoria has nice lyrics and it's kind of a fan song, and I love Jungkook's vocals. However, I HATE the chorus. That sound in the bg that sounds like cocking a gun but with autotune is just awful imo. The song is way too EDM for me. I have the same issue with Magic Shop - pretty song, hate that DJ Swivel produced it. That's why the piano and live versions of Euphoria are much prettier, because Jungkook's delicate vocals shine more.
I just checked out the BTS songs DJ Swivel helped write or produce: Love Maze, Magic Shop, Euphoria, I'm Fine, Answer: Love Myself, Mikrokosmos, Heartbeat, Moon, We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal. I honestly only love Heartbeat. I like Love Maze but it's not a favorite, and WAB: The Eternal and Mikrokosmos are pretty but only so-so. I know these songs are fan favorites but they're not mine. DJ Swivel only produced Euphoria, Magic Shop and Heartbeat, but most songs he participated in have the same issue for me. In theory, they sound pretty but they're also too much - too preppy and high-pitched...
No one asked, but since I like ranking stuff, this is how I would rank Jungkook's solo songs (including L&R, because, why not):
My Time: Vocal perfection. Those vocals runs in the end are *chef's kiss*. Jungkook popped off.
Still With You: Also vocal perfection. The acapella version is what you hear at the gates of heaven.
Stay Alive: Completes the Jungkook vocal trifecta. It might even be his best work, which shows how much he's always evolving.
Dreamers
Left and Right
Euphoria
Begin: Even if the lyrics are super sweet, the song is too one-tone and like a weird EDM (is it EDM, sorry I'm dumb) and RnB mix.
Am I alone in finding Euphoria *oVErraTEd*? I think most people would rank Still With You above My Time, and place Euphoria at the top, but I think almost everyone would also put Begin at the bottom, along with Dreamers and Left and Right?

(livebloggy) thoughts about the studio versions of eurovision 2023 songs on spotify (don't judge me). also if i say something has "energy" or "vibes" it is almost always neutral/positive.
aijā: the instrumental fooled me into thinking this would be far more upbeat and Quirky. then the melody came in and it's slower than my personal liking. uh, sir are you okay? i do like the strong pulse with subdivisions, i hope that's right terms. i like the ending "please don't wake up" (ig that's the bridge) and the stripped down ending (i do mean ending this time) in latvian.
dance (our own party): i liked it until the verse lyrics came on. AND I LOVE THE INSTRUMENTALS THOSE ARE REALLY BOPPING. the chorus is neat!!!! the verse seems like dichotomy. but not in the best way. idk. i'm really enjoying like the whole song aside from verse 1. apart from that section it's great! also i acknowledge that when i write in this post format my bitchiness and criticism grows three sizes so yk
who the hell is edgar?: is it cringy? MAYBE but it's fun OH THE CHANT DAMN. like the music, even though it's upbeat and electro, suits the vibe of possession and horror. even without the chant (though that was sick). which the last song was missing in the first verse. look. early favourite tbh. thanks austria! (the 'who the hell is edgar?' at the end took me out tho ngl)
breaking my heart: it's not bad. it's cute! it reminds me of something i would do warmups to in dance class!! (not a bad thing at all). the texture drop and tight harmonies is done really well. if you described this to me i'd probably expect to hate it but i'm vibing!
so far when i looked up which country each entry was from i wasn't super surprised. idk what that says but i'm saying it.
tattoo: i know this is loreen. thing is i didn't get the hype for euphoria so we'll see. it reminds me of something? oh it's kinda got greatest showman vibes in the chorus. not really in the verse but. also the pre-chorus does remind me a little of church music (like hillsong music). instrumental reminds me of the slow part of love is blind (lithuania 2012). i think people will probably really like this, i think it's mid.
because of you: i have listened to this one before, admittedly. just dance energy. again reminds me of warmups when i did dance as an extracurricular. the lyrics aren't for me, but if they're inspired by a real person, then that's cute for them!!! i just hope they don't make the staging really basic tbh
heart of steel: i like how it's going hard on the minor key. some villain energy. which i respect and endorse wholeheartedly. like it's chill, but evil, and i think that's what we all need to embody a little bit. also reminds me of 'don't get sad, get even' in vigilante shit. idk where i was expecting to come from, but this is very cool, ukraine!!
carpe diem: i like how it starts a lot, less how it builds. OOOO GUITAR OOOOO. i am a child, but that's besides the point.
d.g.t (on and off): i can't really describe it?? it's very rocking for such a slow song, i love the snapping and the rhythm. the high parts, less so, but it really depends on how it's performed. 6/8 my beloved. my beloved. mmmmmmm dynamic interest mmmmmmm. i am not one to wish different from the high notes but uh, not my fave part of the song rn (then again i generally prefer songs sung lower)
ai coração: OOOO THE PIANO RUN LIKE IN SHREK 2. it's so danceable but non in a generic edm way oh i am in love i love her voice ohohohohoh. thank you portugal this shall be in my top.
power: GIRL WHERE WAS THE INTRO. uh very hillsong. idk what to tell you it just gives strong christian music vibes at the start. the electro undertones minimises it but still. STILL. not even just the music the metaphors too.
stay: it's too slow for my liking. it's not bad, it's just. that sort of song. parts of this are familiar, from other eurovision songs. the chorus gives very 'we are the world! world peace!' energy. not my favourite, but if you like it, i'm happy for you!!
eaea: i have listened to this before!!! i think it's neat!!! the vibes are immaculate!!! thank you spain!!! (don't love it as much as slomo but that was the top of my spotify wrapped so yk)
samo mi se spava: it's giving the 2005 dcom minutemen. no i will not elaborate.
blood and glitter: is this... rap rock?? contrast?? it's giving some form of campiness ig?? I LOVE IT. THE VARIETY. GERMANY?? damn nice work germany!!
we are one: it's a little to 'simple happiness' for my taste? but at least it's happy and uplifting!!! i don't love it but i respect it!! it does however remind me of the australian Classic 'for we are one but we are many, and from all the lands on earth we coMe'. i sang that song for like 4 years before knowing the lyrics. like damn i was really rather no thoughts head empty when i was 5. yeah ireland i'm not shocked.
cha cha cha: giving uno energy?? very high energy!! actually add this to a get psyched mix bc this slapsssssss. wooooooooo
mama šč: hey i don't get it i think it's doing A Lot!! but i'm really keen to the staging, and it's bopping
tell me more: it's very sweet and cute. like if it's this sort of slow song it can manipulate me. even if there's non-mischa bachinski rap (seeeee, rtc mutuals, i can slip the references in there!!!)
bridges: reminds me of a matter of time from 2018?? it feels very soft and a little angsty but not in the way i like?? the lyrics, while so valid, aren't what i wanna listen to to live my best life yk?
break a broken heart: ooooo i love the rhythm of this one!! dare i say believer vibes? also the disney channel movie zombies? i know this sounds bad but i'm genuinely thoroughly enjoying it!!! vibes king
what they say: it's sad deep in a way that doesn't particularly mesh with me, unfortunately. although 'i got too much on my plate' eyo same man
evidemment: feels very epic and very french. OH A DANCE BEAT OH. we're vibing now perry the platypus!
solo: it's very upbeat beach vibes. look i just really like it. it's so slay girlboss, you know???
i wrote a song: hmmmmm at least someone's taking alexander rybak's advice!!! not my personal cup of tea musically (not much melodic interest and too staccato for me) or lyrically (since i'm translating catullus, i'm not in the mood for scorned lovers who decide to write verses about how they're getting their revenge. but i don't dislike this artist!! i do hate catullus)
soarele si luna: PASHA PARFENI!!!!! i'm really enjoying this one!!!! (not as much as his 2012 entry, but i had 11 years to fall in love with that one, it'll take time, and they're very different)
due vite: not my thing, and that's okay!!
watergun: it's not my kind of ballad, i hope this person is okay!!
duje: i love the strong pulse with the native language and the violin runs and how it says hyped!!!
my sister's crown: women supporting women. i'm not the biggest fan of the english lyrics or the melody in the verse BUT THE CHORUS SLAPS like majorly so. i don't love the soft ethereal it gets in the english chorus but when it changes languages i do. i think this is a hint that i don't love music in english as much
COMPARE THE MEERKAT AD WOOOOOOOOOO I FUCKING LOVE COMPARE THE MEERKAT (it's a real website you can go to btw)
promise: my country :) i've listened to this one already. i find it rather repetitive in the verses (particularly the first one), the music is fine!! certainly not my least favourite of our entries!!! i really like the music in "cross my heart til the sun turns red in the sunrise" (possibly aided by the brevity of it) and also when they absolutely fucking rock out in the instrumental
burning daylight: i personally don't love it, it reminds me of like 2013 indie stuff. also, to be nitpicky, there's one specific lyric that is the sorta thing that i know pisses me off so. yeah. didn't Help.
queen of kings: yeah this one was an early favourite of mine i've already listened to it. it just musically gives me dark fantasy vibes and energises me, you know?? very disappointed the studio version doesn't include the italian and latin chanting, but it's still like a great song to run to (i don't run). i was a little concerned about if she'd be able to pull of the vocals live (based only on the studio version) but when i watched her melodi grand prix version she fucking slayed
unicorn: i love the epic intro, it was kinda too much of a drop for me when the singer came in. pre-chorus feels a bit basic (***for my tastes) or is it the chorus idk but it reminds me of the circus climax of madagascar 3. the phenonamal part is a bop, and i really do like the ending part!!! the first half just wasn't my taste as much (aside from that beginning instrumentation)
if it's not on spotify, i wasn't bothered to listen to it (but ofc i will eventually!!). honestly this feels like a pretty good year (to meeeee) but not the highest quality ballads/slow songs (i know there's a difference, but for the sake of eurovision, no there's not)

Col Lawton & Scottie Soul - Tears Run Free feat. Becka (Pelvic Movements)
8DPromo · Col Lawton & Scottie Soul - Tears Run Free feat. Becka (Pelvic Movements)
In the ever-evolving cosmos of house music, a new star emerges from the depths of Pelvic Movements' creative universe. "Tears Run Free," the label's third release, is a collaboration of celestial proportions, featuring the UK's Col Lawton, Scottie Soul, and the enchanting vocals of Becka. This musical odyssey is a tapestry of emotion and rhythm, where each track is a vignette of heartache and euphoria, artfully woven into a narrative that resonates with the soul of its listeners. At the heart of this release is the titular track, "Tears Run Free," a fusion of chunky house rhythms and a funky bassline that pulsates with life. Becka's vocals, imbued with a haunting depth, glide over the vibrant soundscape of electric piano chords, sparkling pianos, and sultry saxophone lines. The track is a dance between melancholy and hope, a mirror reflecting the duality of human emotion. Next to the original and starting this package off is Alex Hernandez's Synthmaster Mix. This funk-infused nu-disco rendition takes one on a time-traveling journey back to the '80s, then catapulting into the future with its modern house sensibilities. The No Clothes Mix strips down to the essentials, offering a deep house variant that exudes sophistication and a club-ready sheen. Completing the journey, the Original Instrumental version of "Tears Run Free" is a showcase of the rich layers of instrumentation, each element telling a story of its own. For those seeking a more intimate experience, Z-Sharp Minor's Look Down at the Stars Mix offers a soulful, downtempo vibe that's both smooth and romantic, perfect for late-night introspection or close encounters. "Tears Run Free" is a testament to the power of collaborative creativity in the realm of house music, making "Tears Run Free" a shining beacon in the Pelvic Movements catalog.
Quentin Harris (Strictly Rhythm) – “Loving the Original and No Clothes mixes.” Edground (Brazilian Soul Crew) – “Amazing release. Soulful and groovy.” Michael Fossati (Spirit of House webzine) – “Glamorous sun drenched vibes.” MGiK (Sofa Surfing) – “On air a must!” Black Mighty Wax (Gru Radio 93.3 FM) – “That kind of Vocal House I like.” Jon Manley (hOUSEwORX) – “This is simply stunning. A wonderful production, love it, love it, love it!”

JESSIE WARE - "BEGIN AGAIN"
youtube
This! Is a Review! Of a Jukebox! Favourite!
[6.73]
Frank Falisi: I spent all of 2012 writing to Jessie Ware's Devotion. Music you write to can earn the unpleasant designation as a productive space; nothing inverses the promise of desire like Chill Beats Fall Morning Relaxing Sweet Piano Jazz Music in Bookstore Cafe Ambience to Studying. Nothing is less sexy than work. But Devotion had sex in it, that Sade-Dusty percolation, and if you could make brain space for it while trying to form sentences in a university library, it was because it approached a body from a different, minor vantage point. It was desire theoretical, something you could activate and prove someday somewhere else, if you wanted to. Ware has spent the interim years interrogating that initial chill (Tough Love), removing the remove and sending the pure pop bubbling up (Glasshouse), getting plasticine (What's Your Pleasure?), and now fucking a funk (That! Feels Good!), sending sending it up all the way up. "Begin Again" is both obvious and surprising in that motion, all forky horns and whip ride cymbal, a further push of the pop past the unremembered disco of other such chanteuses into the kind of deeply uncool exaltation that wouldn't be out of step soundtracking seventies spy cheese, covered in shag. Or maybe it's just about and for now, Ware sending her throaty falsetto through faux-insights like "why does all the purest love get filtered through machines? "To be clear, pop music at its best is a faux-insight machine: don't you prefer a beautiful and inane and useless pop? All the better to un-write to. [7]
Jeffrey Brister: A lush, deliriously beautiful swirl of drums and strings and horns and keys rolls across the track, with Ware's voice layered over top, all yearning and need and desire, a gust pushing forcefully through and ever upward. The lyrics beg for something real and beautiful. Am I actually trying to critique the song? No. I love this one too much for that. [9]
Kat Stevens: It's been ten years since I had a nice time seeing Jessie in the dance tent at Glastonbury. Jessie and I have diverged paths since then, but I'm happy with the way I went. I'm less happy about the way Jessie went. I might be too old and tired for Glasto, but at least I'm not at the blimmin' Hootenanny. [4]
Alfred Soto: No album disappointed me in 2023 more deeply than That! Feels Good! From the misplaced exclamation point to the star's pneumatic enthusiasm, the songs amounted to a collective willed euphoria. "Begin Again" and its massed vocals embody the problem. Jessie Ware sounds good -- she always sounds good. [4]
Michael Hong: That! Feels Good! isn't just a rehash of What's Your Pleasure? but a progression. It's a more varied take on that disco sound, with grand proclamations instead of seductive teases. Maybe "Begin Again" is the most tasteful example: her voice sounds fuller, brighter, and plenty more soulful; while the horns and strings add splashes of colour -- that descending Samba melody is particularly bewitching. But blame it on Ware's consistent streak, blame it on the subject matter, "Begin Again" feels more impressive than fun or sexy or really anything other than grand show. [6]
Nortey Dowuona: If there's no colonialism, sure. [6]
Leah Isobel: "Begin Again" plays like the cartoon version of What's Your Pleasure? - it blows up that record's rich, libidinal ambivalence into unsubtle fun. It's not bad, but it feels like a downgrade. [6]
John S. Quinn-Puerta: This is my kind of maximalism. The horn hits speak to my soul. The build is constant, with so much percussion that it just washes over me in the most beautiful way. It also wins my superlative for "most likely to make me dance in my office job" (a lot has happened since the Jukebox's last undeath y'all). [10]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Richly appointed, exquisitely wrought, fucking boring. [3]
Ian Mathers: I'm not going to dock this a point for the fact that I can't quite place what it's making me think of, and how sure I am that other blurbs here are going to have me smacking my forehead going "of course!" That one's on me! I am going to dock a point for how much the repeated "why does all the purest love get filtered through machines?" makes me grit my teeth. There are plenty of times I've enjoyed the salty/sweet combo of this kind of sonic ebullience and foreboding lyrics, but here it just doesn't land for me. Nice horns though. [8]
Katherine St Asaph: I too wish to be reborn as a pulsating satin gown. [9]
Dorian Sinclair: There's a streak of the cosmic in the lyrics for "Begin Again," with imagery that in some instances feels pulled straight from Hair's "Age of Aquarius." But the celestial language is here paired with a succession of musical figures that are all about descent, both vocal and instrumental lines consistently pulling downward (most obvious in the prechorus melody and in the lurching piano walkdown that mirrors it). That tension -- the upward pull and the downward stumble -- is the engine that powers the entire track, right up until Ware breaks through four minutes in, forsaking words altogether as she spirals up into the stratosphere. It's a moment of pure exhilaration, and if the track doesn't seem totally sure of how to wrap itself up afterward, there are worse failings. [7]
Josh Winters: This is my "Break My Soul." [9]
Kayla Beardslee: Extravagance not as guilty overconsumption, but as joyous liberation. [10]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: A devastatingly beautiful song that gets necessarily ruptured partway through via syncopated piano rhythms. I keep waiting for it to evolve even more, but "Begin Again" just keeps getting bigger, more extravagant, and doing more of the same thing isn't exactly reinvention. [5]
Peter Ryan: So much of That! Feels Good! gave me the aural equivalent of "Great gowns, beautiful gowns." As much as anything on the album, "Begin Again" distills the virtues and constraints of the approach -- Ware finding new ways to transmute into sonic opulence, band allowed to cook just a bit, arrangement immaculate, ornate, expensive, careful. The chorus deflates the little bit of momentum gathered in the verses, but the execution is gorgeous enough to avoid the slightly embalmed, tasteful disco-by-numbers quality I find in other parts of the album -- self-consciously retrograde, but it's alive. [5]
William John: I've been a card-carrying Warewolf for over twelve years, but the That! Feels Good! era has presented its challenges, chief among them a need to stomach the idea that on it, the considered joys of Ware's previous album What's Your Pleasure? were Mighty Hoopla-fied to the extreme. And while there's nothing necessarily shameful about such aims, hitherto Ware has traded in either steely sophistication or very subtle vulnerability, and I'm not certain she can entirely shake those comfort zones when, for example, attempting flippant, Countess Luann-like artifice on a song like "Shake The Bottle." The result is an album comprised of a kind of kitsch that isn't quite kitsch enough. "Begin Again" is its Brazilian-influenced centrepiece, gliding and unfurling in a mesmerising way; the reverie is not so much broken but punctuated by a piano that sounds like it's falling down an escalator, by a big note at the climax, and by a disarming line about technology's effect on romance. While these elements and its length might allow it to be scanned as a "kitchen sink" bit of art, the kind of thing the album demands, the overwhelming feeling that I get is that it's like "Spotlight" but with the dimmers on, only occasionally flickering to life. I'll take the latter any day with my caipirinha. [7]
Tara Hillegeist: Sleek and effortless, like Salsoul used to make it, and just as professionally smooth -- but unfortunately, unlike those Salsoul greats of old, the backing singers just aren't quite there in the mix, and the percussion definitely isn't... well, percussing near enough. Deeply unfortunate, as the bones of a standout arrangement are here, and nobody else besides Janelle Monae quite seems to have ever shared Jessie Ware's appreciation for, and interest in pursuing, the steely-throated zenith of disco divinity in a modern context. There are moments on "Begin Again" where she seems to ascend her perch like nothing so much as a perfectly-machined sculpture of song, reaching for that glory -- only to find herself alone in the yearning, un-buttressed by the rest of the clockwork mechanism that should be rising with her in turn -- and the whole edifice sighs back to earth instead. [7]
Oliver Maier: This! Sounds whatever! [4]
Anna Katrina Lockwood: As is often the case with Jessie Ware songs, "Begin Again" is quite good. Is there quite enough song here to justify the full near 5+ minute run time? Possibly not -- at certain points, it feels like Ware and her collaborators have swapped out song structure for layers of disco instrumentation creating dynamic range. It's nice -- it works, and it sounds good, but it's certainly not sublime in the way that, say, "Please" is. I'm absolutely nitpicking here, but this is all to say that the standard is high, and this song is just not quite at the tippy top of Jessie Ware's catalog. [7]
Jackie Powell: After a couple of bars of percussion, "Begin Again" is reminiscent of how "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" begins. While this is technically a show tune that was made for the rock musical Hair, these similarities are most apparent on the 1969 cover by The 5th Dimension. There's an echo in both songs that layers around a few different voices. Jessie Ware is one artist, but "Begin Again" creates an illusion that a whole band is actually behind her in this. Her co-writers join in the fun and provide backing vocals that give the track an extra edge. Ware's delivery reminds me of an Earth, Wind and Fire song and in particular the tracks where the late Maurice White would alternate lead vocals with the under appreciated Phil Bailey. The brass in "Begin Again" is bold but not too distracting and ostentatious. When the horns are at their most noticeable during and following the second chorus, they help guide the listener through what would have been a song too much like a track off Future Nostalgia; I wish Dua Lipa used more horns alongside her heavy reliance on string sections. Ware finds a way here. [7]
Brad Shoup: That piano line is tuff, man. This about as close to that Casablanca disco glamour as you could hope for: aching and endlessly ascending. The line about machines snapped the spell--it felt like something Win Butler or St. Vincent discarded -- but I talked myself into it. If smartphones or the threat of house music had existed in 1979, August Darnell probably would have written a (very good) song complaining about them. [8]

Jungkook was just fifteen years old when he entered a world of spotlights and stages with nothing but his own talent that ke kept on perfecting and six guys who stood behind his like a rock.
This is not just Jungkook. This is Namjoon’s Jungkook, Seokjin’s Jungkook, Yoongi’s Jungkook, Hobi’s Jungkook, Jimin’s Jungkook, Tae’s Jungkook.
This is his Hyungs’s Jungkook.
And in their eyes, he is shining and he is the cause of their Euphoria.
