Trimming The Christmas Tree

Cassie joined Ethan in hanging the last two ornaments. She wanted some part of trimming the tree this year, even if it was something small. He took the star topper from her hand and stretched his arm to place it at the top of the tree. She stepped back to admire Ethan’s work and nodded in appreciation. “Gold star, babe.”

A Valentine's Day Experiment

Thank you to @weetlebeetle, the creator of this adorable commission of Ethan and Kaycee. In my HC, Kaycee is NOT much of a cook, but when she decides to cook a special dinner for Ethan on Valentine's Day, how do things turn out?

Ethan Ramsey had never been a fan of Valentine's Day, and he found it imperative that everyone knew it.

"It's capitalist nonsense!" He declared, pouring over the morning paper. "A scheme to convince feeble-minded fools that they're unloved if their partner doesn't send them grotesquely overpriced roses on February 14th, no other day, just that day will do. And, preferably, at work so that everyone can see."

Kaycee was seated at his side, calmly sipping her tea. She was used to this annual proclamation; she honestly found it amusing by now, and she knew it by heart. She playfully mouthed the words as he continued, believing she'd go undetected.

"If I bring sunflowers home on September 18th, does that mean I love you less? No, it doesn't!" He lowered his glasses on the bridge of his nose the moment he caught his beloved mocking him, but his incredulous glare left her giggling with delight.

"Babe, can I just record this? Please. Not only could we hit replay every year, but I'm sure I could turn this into a viral TikTok!"

That earned his further consternation. "Another ridiculous tradition! The social media posts declaring undying love to the 'perfect' partner we all heard them call a son-of-a-bitch at the coffee station not twenty minutes before."

"Did you get it all out of your system now, love?" she teased so adorably that even the crabby doctor found himself grinning. "I know your position by now, and frankly, it's a little hypocritical if you ask me."

That got his attention. "Hypocritical! How?"

"Because you've gone out of your way to make every one of our Valentine's Days special."

"Ah!" he replied, a gentle smile tugging at his lips. "That's because you don't expect the nonsense or overpriced flowers. You simply enjoy spending the day together."

"Damn right!" She insisted. "I'd be pissed if you dropped $100 on a dozen roses when you know what I really want costs a whole lot less."

Ethan chuckled, a mischievous grin spreading on his lips as his hand landed on her thigh beneath the table. "Costs less? It's free, and I try to provide that to you on a daily basis."

"I wasn't talking about... that," she laughed. "I meant my traditional Valentine's Day cupcakes!"  

He had to smile. This was just one reason he loved her so much. She didn't need fancy things – fancy things he'd honestly be happy to provide for her. But she preferred the simple things - cupcakes, snuggles, perhaps a rom-com – and then those "free" activities they both adored.

"How could I ever forget?" He said, placing a gentle kiss on her temple.

"Well, I've got the day off, so I'm preparing a Valentine's surprise for you tonight," she beamed. "Just make sure you're home from work at a decent hour."

With a promise like that, he made sure he complied. Leaving Edenbrook Hospital the moment his shift ended, he stepped into his condo just after the clock struck six. He was intrigued as he entered the door. A distinct aroma greeted him; it wasn't bad... but something was off. Garlic, rosemary, and... was that cinnamon? His brow, then he saw her.

Kaycee stood in the kitchen, her golden hair cascading over her apron, stopping just above the words Kiss the Cook spelled out in garish, bright pink letters.

"Happy Valentine's Day!" she squealed, rushing over to kiss him. "I made dinner!"

Ethan glanced at the food on the stove, not quite sure what it was. The presentation wasn't bad. It even looked edible. But he was a man of science, and he knew Kaycee's track record in the kitchen. It was unlikely today would be any different from her disasters – uhm – attempts in the past.

"You… cooked?" he asked cautiously, shrugging off his coat.

"Don't sound so surprised!" She said, placing her hands on her hips. "I wanted to do something special for you."

He opened his mouth, then promptly shut it. If the love of his life had spent the day cooking for him, well, then he was going to suffer through whatever culinary chaos awaited him.

Kaycee was already pinching a bite-sized morsel from her creation, all but bouncing as she brought it to his lips. "Here!" She smiled. "Taste this!"

He did his best to hide his trepidation, hesitating only a second before accepting his fate. But, the second the morsel hit his tongue, his highly trained palate was assaulted by a combination of flavors that should never exist together.

He chewed slowly. Trying to think of something that would make this redeemable, but he was coming up blank.

His expression betrayed him because Kaycee's face twisted. "Ethan?"

He swallowed. Painfully. "Hmm?"

"All right," she said, crossing her arms. "Be honest with me."

He sighed, pulling her into his arms. "Kaycee, you are the most remarkable woman I've ever met. Brilliant, compassionate, you brighten every room you walk into..."

"But?" she winced.

"But if you were also an incredible chef, it would simply be unfair. No one can be perfect, dear."

"You hate it," she smirked.

"I..." He paused. "Hate is a strong word."

"Mm-hmm." She turned around and reached into the fridge, producing a pizza box from O'Cheese, their favorite pizza place. "Luckily, I had a backup plan. I can have this heated up in ten minutes."

Ethan exhaled, relieved she wasn't upset with him. "You knew it was going to be a disaster, didn't you?"

She shrugged innocently. "I had my suspicions. But hey, I tried!"

He pulled her close, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "You did. And I appreciate the effort. Even if my taste buds will take a week to recover."

"Rude!" she said, smacking his chest.

Ethan smiled, brushing his lips against hers once more. "Besides… I hear you have other skills."

"Oh? Who told you that?"

"A very credible source," he declared, scooping her up in his arms.  

"Well, I'm not demonstrating any of those skills unless..." her eyes met his playfully.

"Don't worry," he laughed. "I stopped by Bova's on the way home. Your cupcakes are on the table in the foyer."

"Ah! I love you!" she beamed. "So, what do you want first, pizza and cupcakes... or me?"

Ethan chuckled as he nipped playfully at her bottom lip. "As tempting as you are, I'm going to need my energy for what I have in mind. So let's have dinner first."

Kaycee giggled, pressing a hand to his chest. "Oh? Planning something special, Dr. Ramsey?"

He smirked. "Let's just say… you're going to need your energy, too. Happy Valentine's Day, Kaycee," he murmured against her lips.

She smiled as she kissed him once more. "Happy Valentine's Day, Ethan."

It's been two years since the Open Heart series concluded, but we're still not over it. So, we're celebrating all things OH & Edenbrook during Open Heart Appreciation Week, taking place from March 20-27, 2023.

All fanworks are welcome (old and new) for any day of this event — fics, series, masterlists, edits, text fics, moodboards, headcanons, fanart, comics, playlists, confessions...and on and on.

EDIT: MC is used as a generic term below to represent any character that's the focus/main character of a fanwork. Read this post for clarification.

Like Whom?

Set sometime during OH Book 3. Pure Fluff with maybe a sprinkle of angst. Just the first thought that popped into my head on seeing this pic. Enjoy!

Synopsis :While on a trip to Providence, Aspen finds an embarrassing memory which leads to greater consequences than she though possible.

We drove silently down the almost completely empty road, I counted the cars we passed, so far I had reached upto 12.

I stole a quick glance at Ethan, his eyes fixed on the road, his brow set sternly and the worry lines on his face prominent. I placed my hand on his thigh and gently squeezed. He gave me a small smile, the crinkles by his eyes visible momentarily before they disappeared.

"You know, meeting your Dad is not the end of the world. "

"It's not that. "

"Sorry let me rephrase, me meeting your dad is not the end of he world. "

"Aspen, I'm delighted that you want to meet him, get to know him. It's just that, the Ethan from Providence was far too different than now, I'm not sure you can love him. "

"For an imminent diagnostician, you are one silly man. Honey, I hope you see that i love every part of you, every facet of your life, just the way you are.. The baggage is irrelevant, I'm here to help you through that. Besides, if you weren't the Ethan from Providence you never could have evolved into my Ethan. " I glanced at him pointedly, making my point.

"You're right. "

"Always am. " I quipped, earning a chuckle from him.

"What would I do without you? "

"Nothing, you'd be useless. "

"Don't get too ahead of yourself. "

"Nope, only ahead of you. " Another laugh, followed by a quick peck on my cheek as I scolded.

"Eyes on the road, E. "

We turned into Alan's neighborhood in no time.

"Oh thank you, I really needed that. "

Alan handed me a steaming cup of tea, it felt warm against my throat, instantly causing the autumn chill to dissipate from my limbs.

"Ethan's always been a coffee person, I never really could get him to drink this. "

"Don't even get me started on Ethan's love for coffee, at a wedding in Hawaii he chewed my ear off on the plane and at breakfast talking about the coffee. "

Alan chuckled silently.

"He only holds love for a few things that deeply, he never ceases to talk about them. "

"Like what? "

"Well, of course there's medicine, then Jenner, but most of all it's you. "

I flushed at Alan's statement and he only smiled knowingly.

"It's been a while since I've seen him this content and happy. The last time was during his med school days, with Tobias, they were absolutely inseparable. He even cut off his hair because Tobias said so, it looked ridiculous, he regretted but was too stubborn to admit it. "

Alan chuckled to himself at the fond memory. I was immediately filled with curiosity.

"Really? Do you maybe.. Have to photo Or something? " I bit my lip, hoping that Alan had saved the embarrassing moment on paper,it would come in handy some day.

"Wait, I think so. "

He got up, heading to his bedroom. I heard the wardrobe door open and a gentle clutter before he walked out, victorious, photo in hand.

"Here."

"Oh." I laughed at the black and white portrait in front of me, gasping as I realized Tobias still had the same hair now.

"Ethan! Come quick, look at this."

A few moments of shuffling followed before he walked into the living room, puzzled at seeing nothing apparent to notice. I handed him the photo, unable to wipe the smirk of my face, laughing as his features contracted before staring daggers at Alan.

"Dad, why on eart-"

I quickly interrupted him.

"Can i keep it? "

"Sure."

I snatched it deftly from his long fingers, unprepared he wasn't able to grasp onto my prize. Resigned, he plopped down next to me, running a hand along my leg absentmindedly, causing a giggle to erupt.

"You look like Tobias, he still has the same hair. " I laughed at the slightly uncanny resemblance.

"Like whom? Rookie please, there are many other ways to humble me. "

"Well, too bad. Cause I'm using only this one. "

With that he groaned, trying to catch my taunting hand in his but I was too quick, moving from his grasp to run out into the adjoining kitchen, all the while singing, "like Tobias."

Alan and Ethan chuckled, warmth suddenly filling their hearts.

"She is a joy to have around."

"She truly is, Dad. "

"It's lovely to have someone so... constant in this house and your life. She'll be the last person to ever desert you, Ethan."

At the mention of Louise, Ethan tensed, his face growing rigid and impassive. It grew softer as his Dad continued, he finally allowed himself to believe.

" I trust her with my heart, she won't break it, I know. She can't, not with how much I love her. I'll never stop loving her completely irrespective of what she does. "

They sat in silence, each lost in their own thoughts, before Ethan painfully admitted a truth that had lingered but now consolidated in his mind.

"Dad? "

"Yes? "

"I understand. "

A Little Holiday Cheer

Happy Holidays!

@lilyoffandoms had no idea what they were creating when they wrote a tiny drabble about these three sets of loons. Since then, Lily, Dani (@storyofmychoices), and I have expanded on their hijinx, and it just gets more fun with time. I asked the lovely, talented, and all-around amazing @/artbyainna (IG) to create this commemoration not only of the friendship between Ethan, Merida, Bryce, Olivia, Casey & Tobias but, more importantly, the friendship between us! 😊 As always, she MORE than delivered! I hope this brings you a little smile.

There was something about this time of year... even the mundane seemed to morph into magic, and tonight's gathering of friends was no exception. While the robust aroma of lasagna competed with the sweet scent of sugar cookies baking in the second oven, neither managed to diffuse the fragrant pine from the Christmas tree. Music served only as a background to the laughter and lively chatter, but while Bryce and Olivia were too engaged in the conversation.. and each other... to notice the music shift from soulful renditions of holiday standards back to melodic strings and woodwinds, Merida didn’t miss a beat. Resplendent in her holiday attire, she halted slicing provolone for the charcuterie board long enough to shoot Ethan a menacing glare. 

“Ethan Jonah Ramsey, so help me God! If you turn Stevie off to put The Nutcracker back on one more time, I will not be responsible for my actions!”

“I’d be careful,” Bryce advised. “She is holding an exceptionally large knife.”

Ethan started to open his mouth, then thought better of it. With a quick flick of the wrist, “That’s What Christmas Means to Me My Love” blared through the air once more.

“What did it?” Olivia teased. “Knowing you were outnumbered, or the large knife?”

Ethan leaned against the counter, popped a piece of chorizo in his mouth, and shrugged. “It’s the season of goodwill. Let's go with that.” His half-smile quickly retreated when Merida slapped his hand.

“There will be no goodwill in this house if you keep sneaking food! You have to wait until all of our guests arrive.”

A sigh tinged with frustration escaped him. “I fail to see why we all need to starve because Carrick is late... again.”

“Technically, he’s not late,” Olivia advised.

“She’s right,” Merida agreed. “It’s only seven-fifty, and dinner starts at eight. They have ten minutes before we can declare them late.”  

Ethan turned to her with astonishment. “But I was there when you told him to be here at seven!”

“Yes,” Merida said matter-of-factly. “I told him that to ensure they’d be here by eight.”

“But since it's Tobias and Casey we're talking about,” Bryce interjected. “You probably should have told them six."

"True," Olivia nodded, biting into a fluffy cheese puff. “Knowing Casey, she’ll want to redo her hair and makeup.”

Ethan raised his eyebrows in disbelief as Merida smiled. “What?” she asked.

“Olivia is eating a cheese puff and not an ounce of chastisement from you... but I sneak a sliver of sausage, and you considered dismemberment!”

“Ethan...Olivia is a guest! Besides, she’s too cute to dismember.”

The doorbell rang, and the friends looked at their phones at 7:58 PM.

“Wow! They’re early!” Bryce exclaimed. “And they say Christmas miracles are a thing of the past!”

“Great,” Merida laughed as she wiped her hands with a dish towel. “That means they probably didn’t get it all out of their systems, and they’ll be horny on main all night.”  

“And that would be different from every other time... how?” Bryce laughed. 

Merida scurried down the hallway, high heels clicking, but her irritated boyfriend beat her to the door, swinging it open to find Tobias planting kisses on a giggling Casey’s neck.

“Do you two ever stop?”

“What?” Tobias protested with a sheepish grin. “We weren’t doing anything. We were just stuck in....”

“TRAFFIC!” The four friends shouted.

“That is what they call it these days,” Olivia winked, all too proud of herself.  "Aren't they?"

“Hey! You can’t blame us,” Casey said, tossing her fuzzy coat over Ethan’s unextended arm. “Boston is just filled with traffic!”

“Mmmhmmm,” Merida greeted her friend with a warm embrace. “And you two are always without GPS.”

“That’s right,” Casey smiled. “We prefer to go by... feel.”

“Can we send them home now?” Ethan groaned.

But Merida and Casey were already halfway down the hall, linked arm-in-arm and giggling like schoolgirls. Ethan jumped when Tobias’s hand landed on his shoulder with a thud.

“You were saying, buddy?”

Running a hand down his face, Ethan surrendered. “Olivia is right. I’m outnumbered.”

Moments later, the couples were assembled around the kitchen table, with wine generously poured. Ethan happily partook in cured meats as he endured one too many jokes about salami from his best-freinemy.

“Tobias, I swear, you never escaped adolescence.”

“Was that something we were supposed to escape?”

Bryce raised his glass with a smile. “Only during working hours!”

“And these are not working hours,” Merida gleefully stated. “A toast... to friends, who have become family.”

“And by family, she means you’re inescapable!” Ethan grinned.

“Just like adolescence,” Casey beamed, clinking her glass with the others.

Merida set her eyes on Ethan’s, a radiant smile on her lips. “And would you have it any other way?”

Wrapping his arm around her waist he pulled her close. "No," he beamed. "Despite each of you, save Olivia, causing me more grey hairs by the moment... I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Several drinks in, you know they started teasing Tobias about his "Ho-Ho-Ho" sweater. Everyone except Olivia, who wasn't sure what they meant until Bryce whispered it in her ear. Merida and Casey quickly agreed to corrupt the poor dear much more before their New Year's Eve gathering!

An amazing aroma was coming from the crockpot. She went over to peek inside and was surprised to see it set on high. She tipped her head, listening for any noises, but the house was silent.
