When someone had died, or was dying or was so ill they gave up what little hope they could sacrifice, they cut parallel lines into the cliff, exposing the white chalk beneath. With the right eyes you could see them from the mainland or the fishing boats and know to send aid or impose a cordon of protection, and wait a generation until whatever pestilence stalked the cliff paths died along with its hosts. My lines are just for this: to keep any would-be rescuers at bay. The infection is not simply of the flesh.

Hi, friends, just checking in. I'm in the part of grief where you feel like you're drowning. I know I'll get through but right now, it's hard. She was my best friend for 37 years. Imagining the rest of my life without her feels so empty.

I already had decided to not do NaNo this year, which I've done every year since 2008. I actually am hoping to do some writing soon but I don't want any pressure on me right now.

I've been relying on my games to keep my mind occupied but I've found myself sitting here playing Halo or Dead Rising with tears just rolling down my face. So I decided to go to a new game, so that hopefully that will keep my mind more engaged since I'm not familiar with it.

I went with this one since it's completely different from any sort of a combat game. It's basically a walking sim but I'm enjoying that. It has a nice soundtrack, very ethereal and well suited to the environment. I'm curious as to where the story is going to go and it's keeping me from thinking about my life too much.

I'm also considering picking up The Quarry for $8.99, which is, like, about as drastic a 180 from Dear Esther as you can get, lol.

I'm not sure if it's too scary/gruesome for me but it's got Ted Raimi in it and it just seems interesting (and is noted as being similar to Detroit: Become Human in that your choices determine the endings you get). Anybody here ever play this? Would you recommend it?

Video games ramblings

Um.. Dear Chinese Room my beloved. Can I just explore the lovely rusty oil rig in "Still Wakes the Deep" and listen to the wind, the creaking of metal, and the lovely scottish accents and go through everyone's stuff without all this 'terror from the deep that kills everyone'? Promise I will spend at least 12 hours doing that, and go back to it every month. Just like I did with Dear Esther, staying for hours in the caves, just breathing, listening to the amazing soundtrack, getting lost in my thoughts.

Speaking of Dear Esther, I still go back every year or so. It made me fall in love with Scotland and I still dream of visiting the Hebrides (too bad that I, much like Jamie Fraser from Outlander, puke my soul out as soon as I set foot on a ship or a boat. or a plane..)

I don't think any video game has ever impacted me like Dear Esther. I think about it all the time. Three scenery on that wind swept island and the melancholy. It's like a beautiful heartbreaking poem I will never get out of my head.
