Still Wakes the Deep is a masterpiece.

As beautiful as it is compellingly disgusting, it transcends its obvious Thingspiration with incredible writing, vocal performances, and imagery. To call this game gripping is to do an injustice to the stranglehold it kept on me throughout its runtime. 

Set on a North Shore oil rig that inevitably drills its way into a gory nightmare, the dialog and delivery stand out from the immediate get-go. Its Scottish cast puts everything it has into an impressively authentic script. From the lingo to the banter to the unabashed foul language, there’s a naturalness to the script that videogames almost never attempt, let alone excel at.

Not to sound like an uncritical gamer with a Twitter checkmark, but it feels like, since it came out, major gaming outlets are looking for reasons to be unsatisfied with Still Wakes the Deep.

Which is to say, for a conglomerate of media centers that barely kick up a fuss about half-made games being delivered to the general population, "this game didn't need monsters" and "the monster encounters fall short" doesn't feel... honest?

So you’re telling me that the Chinese Room made not one, but two amazing horror games where you are a man running from his fucked up past caused by family drama in a spooky industrial setting whilst being chased by amalgamations of human and non-human organisms fused together around tight claustrophobic spaces whilst being given tasks via telephone and you end up sacrificing yourself in the end to save the rest of humanity?

And BOTH have absolutely amazing soundtracks as well?

AND BOTH HORRORS WERE DIRECTLY CAUSED BY CAPITALISM????

I don’t like posting too much, since it makes me feel icky BUT. Before I forget this- It’s very important.

Still Wakes The Deep was nominated for the Golden Joystick Awards! TCR posted something on the Community page on Reddit (also on Steam) regarding this:

You can place two votes for the game in “Best Audio Design” and “Best Supporting Performer”, to vote, simply go to this link and click on the start voting button.

You don’t even have to use your E-Mail address to submit your votes. So it should make it very easy for people, incase one doesn’t feel like sharing that. I’m hoping for the best that TCR/Secret Mode get one of these awards, or both. It would be awesome either way. Since this game means a lot for the community and I think we can all agree that it deserves an award.

Now Fellas, please spread the word as best as you can! We’ll need every vote we can get. No one posted something about it on Tumblr (or maybe Im extremely blind, who knows), so I figured I’d make a post to inform anyone else who missed this.

Video games ramblings

Um.. Dear Chinese Room my beloved. Can I just explore the lovely rusty oil rig in "Still Wakes the Deep" and listen to the wind, the creaking of metal, and the lovely scottish accents and go through everyone's stuff without all this 'terror from the deep that kills everyone'? Promise I will spend at least 12 hours doing that, and go back to it every month. Just like I did with Dear Esther, staying for hours in the caves, just breathing, listening to the amazing soundtrack, getting lost in my thoughts.

Speaking of Dear Esther, I still go back every year or so. It made me fall in love with Scotland and I still dream of visiting the Hebrides (too bad that I, much like Jamie Fraser from Outlander, puke my soul out as soon as I set foot on a ship or a boat. or a plane..)
