The elven siblings is something that can be so very dear to exactly one (1) person who is also me. Here they are left to right: Elrohir, Arwen, Estel and Elladan

Aragorn definetly brought some annoying younger sibling energy to Elladan and Elrohir especially.

How dare you let me read this with my own, sick, bonny-best-baby-boy strapped to my chest.
I have three boys. The first is absolutely a Boromir. My second is unequivocally Faramir. But this one, my third... this one is Estel.
And now I'm crying.

Did I spend my commute doodling away to illustrate my silly little Elrond-raising-Aragorn headcanons? You bet I did?

While Aragorn can be cynical and sarcastic there are some things that can make him surprisingly tender and soft. Arwen is the obvious one, he might tease her on occasion but only gently. He's remarkably good with children. But also animals, horses most of all.

If you are unaware of Aragorn's backstory, after his real dad died he and his mom went to live in Elrond's house when he (Aragorn, not Elrond) was only 2. At 20, he meets Arwen when she comes back from visiting her grandma Galadriel in Lothlorien (thus sparing her from marrying someone who she would otherwise have seen in diapers).
Elrond is all "So, you want to marry my daughter? Not really thrilled with her tying herself to a mortal, but I'm not Thingol and there aren't any silmarils anymore to demand anyway, so if you want her you better become double-King of Gondor and Arnor and I guess then you'll be good enough for her." And Aragorn is all "Yeah, that sounds fair," and he spends 30 years running around Middle-earth making friends with everyone he meets and generally becoming the person we (the audience) eventually meet as Strider.
Point is, the boy grew up around Elves and considered Elrond his dad (don't think about the not-actually-incest too hard), and Elves don't need to shave, so puberty was probably a real bitch on top of all of Aragorn's other problems.

So I was thinking about how Elrond named Aragorn "Estel" (unpopular opinion: I find it a little cringe) and my new headcanon was born:
Elrond has the same problem as I have, making obscure references / puns / poetry that nobody understands. Having ideas nobody understands. Like "this was brilliant and so wholesome and deep in my head but I show it to people and they're like 'ok...'". Like this felt revolutionary and enlightening and why do you just say "mhm, interesting" and change the topic?
(And I'm currently worrying that my fanfic will end up as one of those - worrying instead of, you know, actually writing it)

Because I imagine this scenes of The Hobbit book with Elrohir and Elladan, you know, Elrond's twin sons. And it looks like this:
Elrohir: What brings Mister Baggins. Elladan: And Balin and Dwalin. O! tra-la-la-lally Elrohir: down into the valley. O! Tril-lil-lil-lolly. Elladan: in June, ha! Ha!
So they laughed and sang in the trees; and pretty fair nonsense.
“Well, well!” said Elrohir.
“Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn’t it delicious!” said Elladan.
Elrohir: “Most astonishing wonderful!”
“Don’t dip your beard in the foam, father!” they cried to Thorin, who was bent almost on to his hands and knees. “It is long enough without watering it.”
“Mind Bilbo doesn’t eat all the cakes!” they called. “He is too fat to get through key-holes yet!”
“Hush, hush! Good People! and good night!” said Gandalf, who came last. “Valleys have ears, and some elves have over merry tongues. Good night!” And so at last they all came to the Last Homely House, and found its doors flung wide.
Bilbo would have liked to have a few private words with these people that seemed to know his names and all about him, although he had never seen them before. He thought their opinion of his adventure might be interesting. Elves know a lot and are wondrous folk for news, and know what is going on among the peoples of the land.
-The Hobbit Book - Chapter III, A Short Rest ⤴️
P.s: They are silly, but are intelligent enough to know the visitors' names and that Bilbo is with them on a mission where he will have to enter through a lock, and they still don't know about the map, and the secret door. Which only proves that Elrond's sons are so much intelligent.
...And then, I imagine it's them singing this, in that scene on Bilbo's journey home, when he and Gandalf stop again in Rivendell:
"Sing all ye joyful, now sing all together! The wind’s in the tree-top, the wind’s in the heather; The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower, And bright are the windows of Night in her tower. Dance all ye joyful, now dance all together!" (...) [Elrohir and Elladan sing the song].
“Well, Merry People!” said Bilbo looking out. “What time by the moon is this? Your lullaby would waken a drunken goblin! Yet I thank you.”
“And your snores would waken a stone dragon—yet we thank you,” they answered with laughter. “It is drawing towards dawn, and you have slept now since the night’s beginning. Tomorrow, perhaps, you will be cured of weariness.”
“A little sleep does a great cure in the house of Elrond,” said Bilbo; “but I will take all the cure I can get. A second good night, fair friends!” And with that he went back to bed and slept till late morning.
-The Hobbit Book -Chapter XIX, The Last Stage ⤴️
And so, in me headcanon, Bilbo kindly chose not to mention in his accounts when Elrond apologized to him about his children, with a certain guilty pleasure, because after all he loves his children and likes to see them happy. And Bilbo understands perfectly, because he also loves Elrohir and Elladan.
And somehow Bilbo thinks they look like Kili and Fili, and it brings tears to his eyes, and Elrond feels like he should be offended that his children are compared to dwarves, but in fact he is smiling kindly.
After Bilbo left Rivendell, Elrohir and Elladan fully told little Estel/Aragorn about him, who was eager to meet him ever since.
Years later, Elrond reads Bilbo's drafts about his adventure, and wonders if Bilbo left so much of his relationships out, just narrating and telling the basics, because it still hurt him to talk or write about it in more detail.
And anyway, everyone in Rivendell loves Bilbo, for reasons we will never know because Bilbo left out of his writings most of the lovelly dialogue and cute and greatest interactions he had with the elves (and also with Thorin's company).
Because it hurt him to put it on paper, or even talk about it, and that's why it took him years to write the most succinct and summarized book about his adventure.

im back from the exam and im absolutely in love with this, im about to cry, really.
thranduil will always fuss about broken decorum while checking children for any injuries — only later on legolas understood that it was a way for his father to distract himself from all the anxiety that comes with having a child that just can't sit still for five damn minutes. he does apologize at some point for all the heart attacks he gave him, well... before his duties called him to go far into the woods and fight spiders.
thranduil IS absolutely protective over arwen, she's everyone's little princess but he is so charmed by her being strong and witty and proud and elegant and so adorably childish, still. arwen likes to talk to him about alot of things, while thranduil braids her hair their special way — the hairstyle they came up with over countless evenings they spent together. thranduil gives her the opinion about her concerns, helps her with the relationship with her father if there's any trouble and explains to her elrond's point of view.
eventually, elrond and thranduil really did help each other to save their relationships with their children.
oh damn, when estel comes into picture elrond is worried, he is scared. first years of estel being in imladris is just a constant need to be on guard and thranduil has to talk him through his worries over thousands of letters sent back and forth, till he rides for imladris himself and i don't know what is up with that child and i respect you not telling me, yet still, out of all, you are the one who's capable to protect him. but if it will lift the weight of terror off your chest, i swear to all that is mighty, if anything happens i'll be there to help and protect
elrond almost cries.
twins are protective over legolas. like, heavily. ever since they were young, twins assigned themselves to put legolas into trouble and than, without a doubt, save him from it. when estel came into picture, they decided that they have to protect them. elrond feels proud knowing that he raised his sons well. thranduil never doubts them, even sents them valuable gifts for just being them.
i am so terribly sorry that i made you smile and then killed the mood, i couldn't hold it but i don't regret it
Going off my last reblog
I LOVE the idea of Thranduil and Elrond being besties and having their kids grow up together (idc about ages this is my head canon)
like omg little play dates w the twins and Legolas
Thranduil getting mad that the twins are corrupting his sweet little leafs mind w tricks and pranks as if Legolas isn’t coming up w half of them
Thranduil teaching Arwen how to braid bc let’s be honest idk what Elrond had going on w his hair but he didn’t braid his kids hair LOL

Hmm, you said cute headcanon sooo :
Elrond, Elladan, and Elrohir are actually really good at tending to most mortal sicknesses - growing up with Aragorn
The twins (Elladan & Elrohir) were also very sad at how fast Aragorn grew up. You know, standing there on his twentieth like 'You'Ve grOwn Up sO FasT Estel, iT'S nOt FaiR'
Aragorn would also make the twins flower crowns all the time
But he couldn't tie them very well, so Elladan would make them while Aragorn handed him flowers
And then at the end Elrohir would be completely covered in flower-stuff
But he wouldn't take any of it off
They'd just walk back to Imladris covered in flowers
firstly how did u know i love elrond's twins 🥺🥺🥺 MY RIVENDELL BOYS AHHH 💖
secondly.... The one abt Aragorn growing up "so fast" absolutely stole my heart.... I can't.... And now I'm visualising all those pretty boys with flowers in their hair and clothes and everywhere 😍🥰🥺
Tysm for these!!!!

Amdir calls human or hobbit pcs 'jailbird' after the initial rescue mission
Radanir served in a big Ettenmoors conflict and at the Fords of Bruinen skirmish so he had experience being a line archer already

☆ ☾ ♥▼♦ ♒ - for Aragorn please 🥺 (hopefully with Aragorn x Legolas)
whoops all Aragorn & Elrond.
☆ - happy headcanon
Likes giving gifts; when he was little, this mostly manifested as giving Gilraen and Elrond neat rocks he found, pretty flowers, and other such things he found in Imladris. Later on he got a bit more sophisticated, though Elrond still gets the occasional neat rock, for old times' sake.
☾ - sleep headcanon
Tried for many years to learn to sleep with his eyes open after someone told him that men could sleep like that too. He never got the hang of it, and stopped when Elrond told him that he could damage his eyes doing that; elves have a thin inner eyelid that they close while asleep like that which humans don't have.
♥ - family headcanon
Called Elrond Ada for many years, and still does if he's tired or emotional or hurt; it just slips out every so often. Elrond also told him stories—not just the dramatic stories like Beren and Lúthien, or the Rescue from Thangorodrim, but the little ones about Elrond's childhood, or stories of Elros's descendants over the years; Aragorn passes these down to his children, as well.
▼ - childhood headcanon
Elves are not always super great at telling humans apart over multiple generations, so little Estel was mostly called Estel…but also the names of approximately every Dúnadan fostered in Imladris for the past few thousand years. Elrond was not only not immune to this, he also called Estel Elros once, after Aragorn returned from spending a few years away in the wilds.
♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon
Talks to birds, a habit picked up from Elrond. Does not, to his eternal disappointment, have Elrond's bird-summoning ability, nor can he understand bird's-speech all that well.
♒ - cooking/food headcanon
Cannot cook. Well, he can, he's not bad at roasting meat or vegetables over a fire in the woods, but you wouldn't eat it if you haven't been hiking all day. Multiple people have tried to teach him how to cook properly, but he is remarkably anti-talented at it.

Aragorn, son of Arathorn
Suddenly Frodo noticed a strange-looking weather-beaten man … [with] long shanks (legs) … [and] a shaggy head of dark hair necked with grey, and in a pale stern face a pair of keen grey eyes.
“The hands of the king are the hands of a healer, and so shall the rightful king be known”.
'no, if he was untrustworthy, he would seem fair and feel foul.' 'so i take it i am, instead, foul-seeming and feel fair?'
It hurt a little, being something that never fit either as an elf with whom he was raised or as a human. Even humans as noble as the Dúnedain. But if prophecy and destiny are only nature following its inevitable course then even that too was meant to be.
It meant wandering the world trying to be worthy of a crown, of a woman. A war was coming but what mattered was the aftermath. Warriors were made in war, Kings were made in peacetime. And he would be king and make a peace that could last for one hundred years.
He can come across as fairly cynical and jaded. He's always been an outsider. When he was raised in Rivendell he was a human child amongst elves, when he grew up and rejoined his own people and men he was in some ways too Elvish. So it shows in his bearing with him coming across as cold and detached.
He sees becoming King as something to earn and become worthy of, not something he's entitled to. The fact Elrond has made it a requisite for marrying Arwen has only made him take it all the more seriously as he wants that mortal crown to be something deserving of laying at her feet.
On Arwen—There is some idealization in how he sees her. She will forever be Luthien, the perfect dark-haired vision he saw in the woods as a youth. That said, he is aware that there is something selfish in asking for her hand and wanting her to become mortal. But he also wants/loves her too much not to ask. Which is why he and the crown he offers her need to be worthy, and all his feelings are a Moebius strip.

I have never had a normal thought since I realised Aragorn/Estel would have been around 10 years old — more like 7/8 considering his heritage — when Thorin's Company passes through Rivendell, so here are some brainrot headcanons (continued under the cut):
Estel is obsessed with Thorin. Just completely obsessed. Follows him around everywhere like a cat, begs him to play with him, offers to run errands for him. Literally every elf in Rivendell is completely stunned at the behaviour because Estel is, normally, a card-carrying ankle-biter.
The Dwarves, on the other hand, are shocked by the fact that by a few days into the visit, Thorin seems to like Estel too. Gloin would have sworn that he expected Thorin to throw the child off the banisters the minute he made him hold his pet python. Thorin didn't just hold said snake, but played with him, let him do little odd jobs, even letting him sit up with him at the dining halls. On two evenings, he even takes Estel out with a wooden sword, to show him how to "fight like a Dwarf lord". All the Dwarves are just as shook as the elves, minus Kili and Fili, who knew Thorin as Uncle Thorin and are completely unsurprised that he is so wonderful with little Estel.
Lindir and Elrond find a content python snoozing in Elrond's study. Lindir and Elrond are both utterly and irrationally terrified of snakes. After much screaming and climbing on sofas, every member of staff swears Estel had been in his mother's quarters all day. Nobody thinks to mention that they saw Bilbo and Thorin hanging about outside the study, because what relevance could that possibly have?
When the company left Rivendell, Estel was understandably quite unhappy because he'd miss them, also they were going to see a dragon, and he begged to go with them. Thorin does what most parents do before going on a trip, and promises to bring him a present from the dragon's lair when they returned.
Bilbo returns without Thorin, but with the promised present for Estel. He visits the boy in his quarters and they hold each other and share their grief. Bilbo then shows him the present. He explains how Thorin wanted to give him something more substantial than a golden cup scraped off the floor of a dragon's lair — he had told Bilbo, the night before the battle, to give the boy Thorin's own solid gold wristband.
On the same return trip, Elrond expressed his condolences over Thorin's death, and enquired if there were other casualties. When he finds out that Kili and Fili had also died in the battle, a strange, terrible expression twisted across his face and he said, almost reflexively, both? both together? good. that's good. The remaining Dwarves and Bilbo were all stunned, thinking it was Elvish apathy at best, and deliberate disrespect at worst. After all, they had no reason to know that Elrond, like his immortal brethren, found it somewhat difficult to gauge the ages of mortal beings — and had thought the two late brothers were twins.
Decades later on the night before the Fellowship were set to depart, the elderly Bilbo Baggins found it hard to sleep from worry, and wandered onto the balcony, and saw a lone man practicing sword moves in the courtyard. He realises both man and combat style seem faintly familiar, like the heavy striding and swinging and slashing are the steps to an old dance he once used to know, which now lives in a deep, forgotten place within him, under layers of unravelling memories. He can't quite put his finger on it. But there is a strange comfort in the sight, so soothing Bilbo's eyes start to close, falling asleep curled up right there on the balcony. He slips off into a wonderful old dream, lulled by the rhythm of fallen leaves crunching in the courtyard — where Aragorn "fights like a dwarf", solid gold wristband twinkling under the light of the stars.

Regressor!Aragorn Headcanons
(with cg!Elrond)
While it might be a bit difficult to pin down a specific regression age for him in terms of numbers, Aragorn consistently occupies a soft smear of toddlerspace whenever he's feeling small. Just old enough that he is filled to the brim with curiosity about the world around him and having a want to do things on his own, but still small enough that he needs a lot more help than he thinks he does. It is because of this that he's something of a trouble maker—not intentionally, mind you, but because like a lot of children at that stage they want to do the first thing that comes to mind however ill-advised it may be. A fact that is doubly true when that toddler thinks they're still a grown-up. Why can't he go wander through the forest on his own in the middle of the night? It's dangerous? That doesn't mean anything to him when he's so little and believes he's still got his big boy senses about him. Yet all of those alleged big boy senses get tossed aside when a lightning bug catches his eye and leads him away as he fumbles to catch it. Which is why it's pretty imperative that he regress with someone to mind after him to avoid incidents like those. Luckily for Aragorn, he has Elrond keeping an eye on him—a task that by far isn't anything new for the elf, though somehow his charge always manages to keep him on his toes.
As for when he started regressing? Aragorn couldn't properly tell you that either. Mostly because the way he matured was a bit different when compared to a typical human with an average lifespan; what might be seen as immature or regressive behavior to some is actually pretty common in those who, like Aragorn, are mortals with elven heritage. Elves (being longer lived) have longer childhoods, so there are occasional hiccups as a sort of holdover from his lineage. These holdovers are only encouraged by where he grew up—it wasn't exactly uncommon for the residents of Rivendell to unintentionally baby him. Humans are squishy and fragile, and this one was theirs! So of course the treatment he received was reflective of all of that. Though by far the person who doted on him the most (and who still dotes on him) is Elrond. Despite the great gap of generations between them, that doesn't change the fact that Aragorn is descended from Elros; Elrond would be lying if he claimed that Aragon being his brother's descendant didn't grant him extra affection towards the boy. No matter how old he gets, he cannot help but indulge his little Estel whenever he can, even if it's often in subtle ways. (Or at least Elrond thinks he's being subtle, but everyone else Knows.)
For the longest time, Aragorn doesn't know that anything related to his regression might be viewed as "unusual" to other people as he has never had to hide it. He was incredibly young when he first came into Elrond's care, and didn't leave Rivendell for quite a number of years after that. Even then, he wasn't exactly in the company of the common folk, instead traveling with rangers that aren't exactly known for their social graces. And due to the type of regressor he is—little to no speaking, prone to wandering off, a tendency to want to nap—most of the time it can be brushed off. But those times that it can't be so easily explained away? It gets suggested that maybe he should return home for a little while. Surely his increase in picky eating or the crying over minor injuries (when he's definitely had far worse that he didn't even bat an eye at) must be a sign that he's homesick or something. Though this isn't exactly a misattribution! If Aragorn finds himself regressing while he is away from Rivendell—away from Elrond—then he needs to return as soon as he is able. Because while brief snatches are one thing, Aragorn tends to spend long periods of time regressed. This only becomes more and more necessary the longer he spends traveling. Similar to the concept of a "sleep debt", he has something of a "regression debt" and will need about a week of being small to catch up.
And while it will eventually happen whether he likes it or not (or even means for it to happen!), regressing outside of Rivendell is something that is very difficult for Aragorn. Though a lot of his regression feels wishy-washy and he doesn't acquire the concept of embarrassment about it until a lot later than others might, that doesn't mean he's ignorant to how truly vulnerable it can make him. It's honestly a relief to be able to have Elrond fret over him when his sense of self-preservation is overruled by the childish mindset that "nothing bad will happen" so long as he follows (most) of his Ada's rules. Being away from that protective environment leads to an unease in his chest, a feeling of being unsafe that makes it hard to let go like he needs. Not to mention the other factors at play in regards to why it's just easier for him to be small in Rivendell; there's the familiarity for starters, but also? It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that being surrounded by people that are centuries upon centuries older than you would make anyone start to feel awful little indeed. Go ahead and tack on the fact that they tend to treat him like the child he can often be for the very same reason! In other words, it creates quite the positive feedback loop.
Once he's there though, he's there. As previously mentioned, Aragorn regresses for long periods rather that short bursts—three days on the lower end and about a week or so on the upper end—so long as the specific requirements are met. Everything has to be just so before his mind can properly settle into one of his regression periods, otherwise he can get a little fussy to put it mildly. For starters, he has to be out of any traveling clothes and armor, instead dressed in the softest clothes kept for him at Rivendell (specifically the blue ones and not the green ones). Then there's the fact that his diet becomes extremely limited in that he will only accept curds and whey topped with freshly picked berries. Anything else is so yucky, Ada! and he is not eating it, nuh-uh. But most importantly he has to have his blanket that stays safely tucked away and awaits his return every time; weaved silvery threads with pale blue stars adorning the edges, the blanket having been made for him by Elrond not long after Aragorn first came into his care. To keep the chill at bay, along with any unpleasant feelings. He would be hard pressed to find another object so comforting as his special blanket; just snuggling the downy blanket and rubbing the velvety texture against his rough cheek causes him to become absorbed in the contrast, so much so that it makes him sleepy and soothed.
Though prone to wandering, a day spent exploring the gardens of Rivendell isn't actually what his ideal regression day would be! Contrary to popular belief, Aragorn isn't happiest on one of his little adventures (as they usually wind up to him getting in some sort of trouble), but rather when he's getting quiet gentle time and attention from his Ada. This quiet gentle time most often comes in the form of bathtime. Nothing makes him feel as small and as cared for as being helped in the bath, the steamy water and sweet scent of rose and honey soaps easing tense muscles and making any mental barriers lax until he's occupying that sleepy babyspace. In fact, Aragorn almost always falls asleep by the time he's been fluffed dry with a towel and is having his hair carefully braided. But he fights to stay awake, attempting to rub the sleep from tired eyes and asking so softly for a story as he's tucked into bed with his special blanket being pressed into his arms, more lovey-sized than blanket-sized these days. Elrond is more than willing to oblige the request for a bedtime story, knowing that Aragorn will be fast asleep with a thumb pressed into his mouth not long after any "once upon a time"s.
No matter how long he is away for, Elrond always welcomes him back just the same as if he had been there all along. It's the one constant that Aragorn relies on in a world that is oftentimes quite tumultuous as theirs tends to be. While he knows Aragorn has responsibilities elsewhere at times, Elrond always makes sure to keep his things in order, makes sure he knows he has somewhere to call home. Because for as much growing up as he has done, it's difficult for him to not see the little boy that was entrusted to his care many decades ago. Because how does one stop caring about their charge, no matter the apparent physical age? The answer of course being that you don't stop caring, and if anything care more as the years pass by if you're sentimental (which, perhaps regrettably considering he has become attached to a mortal, Elrond is). Seasons come and go, as do the hardships and the adventures, but deep down Aragorn knows that he will always have somewhere—will always have someone—to return to, when things become too much to bear alone.
