Ranking JoJos From Least to Most Trans*
7) Jonathan Joestar: Sorry king. I probably will like Part 1 when I get to it for your goofy, himbo ass and its gothic tone but you have the most cishet energy I've ever seen. 6) Joseph Joestar: Gains points for having the most gay and colorful intro, loses points for being friends with a Nazi; has more queer energy than his grandfather tbf. 5) Johnny Joestar: That outfit is a little fruity; ditto with the blue lipstick 4) Jotaro Kujo: More gay coding than trans coding but I can definitely see it, especially with his Part 3 self being an overcompensating male stereotype 3) Josuke Higashikata (both 4 and 8): Both parts have the more positively masculine personalities I associate with trans men, plus the iconic "It's me" TikTok for Part 4 Josuke 2) Jolyne Cujoh: She is the most transbian girl of all time. Hates her dad. Beautiful design. Loves the idea of having multiple sexual partners. I am not biased at all. 1) Giorno Giovanna: My friends might glaze him too much, but he is the only character I can credibly see as genderfluid, a trans man, or a trans girl.
*(sans Jodio cuz I know the least about him)

Joestar’s new years headcanons
Happy new years to everyone!! I am so grateful I could roll in the new year knowing I started writing for all of you! I wish all of you lots of good luck!! And all of us even more fun together <3
—————————
Jonathan Joestar (London, 1880s):
• Jonathan values tradition and would celebrate New Year’s with a proper Victorian dinner party.
• He’d wait for Big Ben’s chimes before pulling you aside for a private moment.
• His kiss would be tender and genuine, paired with a quiet wish for your happiness in the coming year.
Joseph Joestar (New York City, 1930s):
• Joseph thrives in the energetic New York nightlife, so he’d absolutely be at a party or even Times Square.
• He’d make the countdown a big deal, loudly leading the final seconds.
• His New Year’s kiss would be theatrical—a playful dip or a cheeky remark before he plants one on you.
Jotaro Kujo (Japan, 1980s):
• Jotaro sticks to ōmisoka traditions, like eating toshikoshi soba with family and reflecting on the year.
• He’d likely suggest visiting a temple for Joya no Kane (108 bell tolls).
• His kiss would be understated but meaningful—a quick gesture paired with a simple “Happy New Year.”
Josuke Higashikata (Morioh, 1990s):
• Josuke enjoys the family-centered traditions of New Year’s in Japan, especially the big meals like osechi ryori.
• He’d probably get too excited during the countdown, accidentally knocking something over.
• His kiss would be enthusiastic, paired with a big grin and a confident “This year’s gonna be amazing!”
Giorno Giovanna (Italy, 2000s):
• Giorno is all about symbolism, so he’d fully embrace eating lentils for wealth and tossing old things to welcome a fresh start.
• He’d insist on reflecting quietly before midnight, appreciating the significance of the moment.
• His kiss would be soft and deliberate, with a heartfelt wish for both of you to achieve your goals.
Jolyne Cujoh (Florida, 2010s):
• Jolyne loves a good beach party or casual gathering with music and fireworks.
• She’d be the one hyping everyone up during the countdown, probably teasing you in the process.
• Her kiss would be bold and confident, followed by a playful laugh and a quip like, “You’re lucky I didn’t make you wait.”
Johnny Joestar (America, 1890s):
• Johnny’s New Year’s is quieter, maybe around a bonfire or in a cozy, small-town setting.
• He’d spend the evening reflecting, holding your hand as you watch distant fireworks.
• His kiss would be hesitant at first but deeply heartfelt, with a soft “Thank you for being here.”
Gappy / Josuke Higashikata (Morioh, 2010s):
• Gappy would enjoy Japan’s serene traditions, like watching the hatsuhinode (first sunrise) for a fresh start.
• He might awkwardly ask you to join him, unsure if he’s “doing it right.”
• His kiss would be shy but sweet, muttering something like, “I’m glad we’re starting the year together.”
Jodio Joestar (Hawaii, 2020s):
• Jodio’s New Year’s is all about the vibe—a Hawaiian luau with fireworks and ocean breezes.
• He’d act cool during the countdown but would secretly enjoy the festive atmosphere.
• His kiss would be confident and casual, followed by a smirk and a laid-back “Here’s to leveling up this year.”

Ethnicity in JJBA
I love that Araki decided to use different ethnicities for his characters and I could talk about it all day, to be honest.
Like, it all started with George I, Dario, Jonathan and Erina, and George II and Lisa Lisa as British people and then Joseph decided he likes Italians.
Boom: half-British half-Italian Holly Joestar who married a Japanese musician = half-Japanese, quarter Italian and quarter British Jotaro Kujo.
Jolyne is half-American, quarter Japanese and one eighth Italian and British each.
Josuke: half-Japanese and half-British, just like Giorno.
The only difference is that Giorno’s living in Italy because his mother said “yo I have a thing for European men” and married an Italian who forced Giorno to say goodbye to his Japanese origin.
As for his half brothers, all we know is that their mothers were all American. But I like to think that Rikiel’s mother is/was black, just like I do for the Costello sisters.
I have to admit, I was confused at first when I saw that Gloria didn’t have dark skin or dark hair like Hermes before I realized that they could be mixed, and the same goes for the Pucci children. Plus, it’s canon that Ermes is Mexican (I’m just not sure if half- or fully) and Pucci is Italian or Italo-American, which are also little details that I really love.
One thing that will always have a special place in my heart is Avdol being Egyptian. It has never been mentioned, but I like to think that he’s also muslim. Which is really important to me since I haven’t really seen a piece of media from non-muslim parts of the world that represented muslims accordingly. They’re either shown as terrorists or don’t exist at all. So this was extremely refreshing and he’s also black AND canonically OP af?? I love.
Japanese Noriaki Kakyoin with red hair? Now that’s what I like to see. I think he’s also a part of the Has Been Bullied Club and he was a very lonely child, so being with the Crusaders must’ve been really important to him.
Not to forget our beloved Frenchman Polnareff. I love how he switches to French just to emphasize things or when he’s too frustrated to even think in English. I relate a lot to that, especially because English is my third language of six languages in total.
I’ve also seen the headcanon of Rohan possibly being Indian or having Indian ancestors and while I don’t agree with that, it has actually crossed my mind when I heard his name for the first time (cliché, I know I’m sorry). It could also be that his parents just liked the sound of the name and that’s all to it, which I think was more the case.
Little things like these give me the freedom to headcanon whatever I want.
For example, I love the thought of Holly learning English and Italian from her parents and then teaching those to Jotaro, who then taught Italian and Japanese to Jolyne.
Or a crossover where the other JoJos and GioGio meet Jodio and Hermes starts laughing her ass off because of the Spanish meaning of the word jodio.
Or, on the angsty side of things, Jotaro being bullied by older students because he’s “only” half-Japanese. Just like Giorno was bullied (although I do not remember if it actually was because of his heritage, but I think so).
Not taking Part 7 – Part 9 characters into the equation because I haven’t finished reading Steel Ball Run yet, which means I didn’t even think about JoJolion and The JoJoLands.

it’s quite fascinating how, up until this point, despite being framed as the traditional protagonist, jodio is given mostly traits that are associated with previous villains in other parts. think about it, he demonstrates greed, ambition, and a tendency towards excessive violence and short-sighted decisions. he’s even explicitly diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder and calls himself a sociopath, traits that are often associated with villains due to the lack of empathy it causes (which is a whole can of worms about the stigmatization of mental health in popular fiction, but i’m willing to give araki the benefit of the doubt and wait to see which direction he takes the story and that trait in particular in).
on the other hand, dragona is given the most traits we associate with classic heroism, being the leader and mediator of their group who advocates for holding back when jodio gets out of hand and the one that gets to experiment with the macguffin, as well as being nicer and having almost as much focus dedicated to them as their brother. the fact that, as a dark skinned person of color with an ambiguous gender identity, they’re also a rather nontraditional hero, especially in a japanese piece of media, adds another interesting layer to this.
there are two main parallels we can draw to these two: giorno and bruno, and dio and jonathan
jodio and giorno both obviously embody a lot of dio’s traits, being ruthless and power-hungry, although jodio is certainly more emotionally open and driven by personal gain than reserved and idealistic, more like a young dio than most of his sons were. whereas dragona, as a calmer team leader who follows the rules but still needs the protagonist to bail them out of a tight spot, has tons of parallels to bruno, but the fact that they’re set up as the underdog brother with more traits the story associates with heroism when their brother is a clear reference to dio brando of all characters should not go unnoticed
what i’m trying to say is that upcoming emotional drama is inevitable and it will HURT

I may or may not have just guessed the ending of JoJoLands
Jodio Joestar will end up being the main villain. The final battle will be between him and Dragona, a battle between brothers mirroring Part 1. This would be a beautiful and heartbreaking way to end JoJo once and for all, and it would be a new type of enemy that Araki hasn't explored before: betrayal from one's own family.
Jodio himself seems to have all the hallmarks of an aspiring villain. (His name is literally Jo-Dio?? Too easy.) He's already shown himself to be violent and greedy. Sure the two people he beat up were police officers assaulting his brother but it still felt a bit over the top. He also works for some kind of mafia, and not for any noble reason like Giorno; he just wants to get, in his own words, "filthy rich." (And what was Dio's motivation at the beginning of Part 1?) The first interaction we see in his daily life is him selling drugs to someone at his high school, which couldn't be a more obvious subversion of Giorno's morals. Even in the way he views his relationships and society. He looks down on people who are good-natured, only caring about getting favorable results, (a common theme with villains in JoJo) viewing society not as driven by uncontrollable fate which everyone must navigate, but as a "mechanism" to exploit for its benefits
Then there's his character design and especially his stand. Tell me this wouldn't fit right in with the lineup of main villains' stands it's just so menacing
My first thought was that it looked a lot like Fun Fun Fun from Part 8, and that Araki wanted to bring back a cool-looking design. But it also looks a lot like D4C Love Train
It also has these spikes on its shoulders, just like the feathers on Dio's outfit when he became a vampire and Made in Heaven
As for Jodio himself, when I first saw him I couldn't help but think his outfit was very similar to Toru's, with the sleeveless hoodie with lots of ornamentation
It'll only be about 15 years until we see if I'm right
(Araki-sensei if you're reading this please don't change your ending just because of a prediction one person on tumblr dot com made after reading one chapter. I'll be happy as long as your vision for your art comes true. That's what JoJo has always been about to me more than anything else)

Jojolands 18: All About Magnetism
Magnetism is sorta the main theme this time. Not just the MRI but the great bookend with the Lava Rock in action. And I love that Jodio locks into this. The way things are going is a hopeful sign the plan is working. This is feeling a little like Vento Aureo, Dragona felt a little more in charge early on like Buccirati but of course over time it was obvious how much better suited Giorno was. I imagine the siblings will keep that dynamic, where Dragona still does stuff like working more directly with Meryl Mei but Jodio steps up as situations devolve into the absurd.
Speaking of, still dealing with this fight with Bigmouth Strikes Again/Glory Days. I buy Smooth Operators as a counter to the latter much like it's useful with the first. The fight is coming down to this idea that as long as we can keep Dragona safe we can handle this. I love it, feels like the classic first truly hard test that helps the team finally come together. Especially when Paco also gets a chance to really show his stuff here too.
But first, I do love this reminder through Charmingman, Dragona, & Usagi that this gang easily has the lowest collective IQ of any JoBros. It's always a treat when that "D" stands for "Dummy." And this is a great one. Imagine being a nurse, looking into a supply closet where an entirely new MRI machine has spawned while this weirdo is casually acting like everything's normal. Meanwhile the "tech" has gotten themself stuck to the machine and the guy inside is still going off with lame acronym jokes.
This shit is hilarious. Especially in this little lull in a stand battle. Even moreso when Charmingman simply does not care about Dragona's struggles. Big ZoKiku energy. Love it. But back to the meat of the chapter.
Oh I just love this panel. And it shows the genius of Glory Days. The pair can take it slow because the slow movement of the bullets allow games like taking a potshot from the elevator and getting away before the bullets even hit. Pretty clever to be honest. Likewise with Paco using The Hustle to wrap the elevator door around him. This guy is slowly winning me over but doing it well.
I'm not normally a fan of the "heavy" but Paco's really shaping up into a very sharp variant of that too which is always cool. The stuff with the Howler Agents is fun too. The little girl asking to be adopted and getting a flat no is great. With what's going on around them, could we be building up to a Yorknew Zoldycks situation? If you don't know HxX it was basically an assassin family looks like they're about to eliminate a key antagonist only to back off at the last minute when they find out the rest of his gang killed the employer. Basically, if the money has just vanished do these two have a reason to be enemies? That remains to be seen, especially given...
Oh Araki you genius...the Rock works in mysterious ways. If you don't quite get what happened here, these were the guys that just called in a debt on Acca Howler himself last month. Someone trying to move in on the land before the politician could. Two strange, absurd strokes of luck allowed the gang to set themselves up perfectly. They end up in the hospital right when Dragona can forge the politician's signature, and now the bankers lost critical time to muddy the deal thanks to one of Glory Days's strays.
That's the basic idea. The government process to seize and investigate what's been going on at Howler's land is now moving. If the bank worked quickly enough they could have seized it and kept that from happening. The easiest path to open up a big plot of expensive land like that is if it has to go through some kind of government seizure. As someone with a lot of experience in state/local government...it's actually pretty smart storytelling for Araki. All told, it's absolutely fascinating how the pair of assassins have become unwitting allies through the Lava Rock's influence.

JJBA Protagonist Abilities
I'm really inspired by 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventure,' because stands are an excellent way to go about avoiding power creep and creating versatile but limited power sets. Probably my favorite plot point in Part 8 is that the Rock Humans have more predatory and devastating, but situational stands, compared to most other antagonists in the series.
However, Araki doesn't go as far as he could with the protagonist's abilities. Giorno's is a little too versatile, while still being strong (although you could say this fits thematically with him being the son of Dio, whose stand is also 'unfair'). Jotaro's stand is obviously very basic, but that's acceptable since it's from the first part with stands. That leaves Crazy Diamond, Stone Free, Tusk, Soft & Wet, and November Rain.
I was super excited about the reveal of November Rain, because it really seemed like a mook stand that just happened to be used by a main character. To me, this fit really well with the themes of Part 9, since Jodio believes that he's a psychopath doomed to struggle with human connection; he doesn't view himself as a hero. Of course, in more recent chapters, November Rain has been established as a pretty versatile stand, although it's still a bit more specific than any of the previous main character stands (in my opinion).
Crazy Diamond has a very neat and clean powerset; healing and repairing objects. This may seem simple, but has a variety of applications in Part 4. Stone Free essentially just allows Jolyne to stretch herself, fit through tight spaces and go "long-range" at the cost of vulnerability; it basically just improves hand-to-hand combat, but it's still a pretty good stand.
Tusk is a stand that really makes a point of "harnessing a force of nature." Gold Experience gives Giorno control over biology, but Tusk gives Johnny control over rotation, including allowing him to create black holes. Objectively, it's probably the best idea for a main character stand so far in a series about the power of fate. However, I've read some convincing fan theories about November Rain, I love the way that Crazy Diamond is used in certain fights in Part 4... and I think that Soft & Wet had a lot of potential.
I actually love Part 8, and it's kind of necessary for Josuke to have a "bullshit stand" when a lot of his opponents use devasting and/or long-range and/or automatic stands (of the Rock Humans, Aisho Dainenjiyama, Dolomite, Poor Tom and Satoru Akefu/Toru all have automatic stands). In addition to Doobie Wah!, Blue Hawaii, Ozone Baby and Wonder of U, Tamaki Damo's Vitamin C and Yotsuyu Yagiyama's I Am a Rock both have features of automatic stands. Once infected, victims of Vitamin C are doomed as long as they're in its range. I Am a Rock attracts objects to people's bodies automatically, although Yotsuyu is at risk since he has to touch people to activate his stand. For Vitamin C, I Am a Rock and Brain Storm, calling them 'automatic' is varying degrees of a stretch, but I definitely think Doctor Wu and the Schott Keys are the only Rock Human stands that have no automatic elements (although Doctor Wu clearly has a different-functioning brain to control all the different parts of his body in the way he does). That's a count of seven automatic stands to three non-automatic, and Brain Storm and Schott Key No. 2 have very small automatic features, since they are diseases. One could argue that, if Green Day functions automatically, then so do Brain Storm and Schott Key No. 2.
Of course, there are non-Rock Human stands that are automatic in Part 8. This in particular includes Kei Nijimura's Born This Way. California King Bed also takes memories automatically, although only when Josuke breaks a rule. That's excluding Yasuho Hirose's Paisley Park and Norisuke Higashikata's King Nothing, which are automatic stands used by allies of Josuke.
I just really enjoy talking about my theory/"observation" that the Rock Human stands are especially predatory, aggressive and unfair because they're a solitary species of humanoid with low to no empathy.
Regardless, Gappy's Soft and Wet is a very interesting stand that's hard to write for. It can "plunder," absorb, steal basically whatever Josuke wants... from physical objects to abstract concepts. He can place himself inside a bubble, mediate air pressure, steal friction from a floor or eyesight from a human being.
I basically came up with this list of Jojo protagonist abilities to make myself feel a bit better while I devise abilities for my own protagonists.

Jojolands live-blogging let’s goooooooo
1st impressions under the cut:
Jodio is such a wild name especially considering there’s a Spanish meaning (look it up lol). It makes me think of the Jorge Joestar novel where it says that Erina spelled George II’s name as “Jorge” to keep the “Jo” and it’s like ah yes, it’ll play out how you think in the Spanish-speaking Canary Islands.
Jodio’s narration makes him sound like an actual 15-year-old, and there’s something a bit charming about that. He goofs around and wants to become rich, but he also follows other people’s orders and definitely is flying by his pants as he goes through this process. Araki did a great job establishing Jodio through his narrative voice, stuff like, This may sound like bullshit” and his tangent admiring Meryl’s designs.
There’s definitely the “Giorno” connections (Giorno was the child of both Jonathan and Dio and Jodio is like combining “Jonathan” and “Dio” as names, both are 15 in their stories and have jobs connected with crime, and both of them have clear ambitions). Both of them definitely are observant and can read people very well. However, unlike Giorno, Jodio is not a smooth criminal. He reacts with violence first as opposed to trying to charm his way out of situations. Jodio’s been a low-level grunt for gangs since he was a child, rather than Giorno being a solo petty thief who, once completing initiation, dethrones the Boss and takes charge in like a week.
Another notable thing in this story is that Jodio is a Jojo who comes with a sibling, an older sibling at that. Jodio is definitely protective of Dragona, and also defers to their choices, and listens when Dragona begs Jodio to hold back. I love their rapport, it definitely feels like accurate sibling energy. They crime together, goof off with each other, both of them protect their mother and each other. I love how Dragona was begging for the police to leave Jodio alone because he’s a kid, a minor, and that Dragona holds Jodio back from going too far when beating up the cops who’d assaulted them. I also love how Jodio saw what was going on with Dragona and went “aight time for violence” immediately.
Definitely a new dynamic for the Jojo and JoBro, and also a refreshing take on Jojo sibling dynamics. Jonathan and Dio was about the worst way siblings could go (understatement), and Josuke and Joshu plus the other Higashikata children had a rocky dynamic given that…well, the amnesiac teenager being adopted into the family is a lot to get used to, so in some ways Jojolion was in part the Higashikatas learning how to accept Josuke and give him the family he needs. Johnny and Nicholas seemed to have a positive relationship, but of course that ended with tragedy given Nicholas’ passing.
Regarding the discourse over Dragona’s pronouns, I admit, as someone who is cis, I don’t feel I have a right to comment on this detail beyond that this is only the first chapter, and we don’t know how Araki will handle it for the rest of the run. Given that Araki is a cis Japanese man in his 60s, and that his writing and portrayals of other marginalized folks doesn’t have the best track record (Part 2 the anime had to cut out some rather unsavory caricatures of Mexicans, and Part 3 tended to play into uhh questionable “exotic land” stereotypes especially along Southeast Asia), I wouldnt recommend getting one’s hopes up for the most stellar execution of representation for Dragona here. I will definitely say that no matter what happens with Dragona, it’s a Your Mileage May Vary situation, but beyond that, I’ll leave that to people who know more and have lived experience when it comes to talking about Dragona’s gender identity.
Meryl is the tallest Jojo character now after the Pillar Men and that is amazing also, yeah, how many hustles does she have? The fact that she’s a school principal as well as a small business owner as well as a crime boss (not sure how big her gang is though). I’m sure there’s a joke about the US educational system in here somewhere lol.
Also, a Jojo in a US public highschool. No notes lmao
There’s several references to our time, like Dua Lipa, Uber, and Covid. We can assume that means this takes place past 2020, most likely around 2022-2023 since no one is wearing masks, but Dragona doesn’t like the officer getting that close and cites social distancing as a reason—notably, the officer is shown as Asian since he asks “do you not want me to get close to you because of my race?” which also references the spike of hate crimes against Asians during the height of the pandemic. There’s also a bit of a meta mark of the times given how Araki went ACAB in the first 5 pages of chapter 1.
The Filthy Frank lookin’ ass dude. No notes lol
This part’s theme seems to be focusing on a new concept called “Mechanisms”. As far as I can understand about how it works given what we have so far about it, it seems to be something to do with “social systems.” Jodio built a social system of “trust” through being a good Gofer for the gang he works for, while the classmate he compares himself to is bullied because he doesn’t have a system like that for the school. Even though the unnamed student is larger, maybe smarter, and presumably wealthier, he’s singled out for bullying because he doesn’t have a good “mechanism” and will be due to leave the school soon. We’ll have to see how this plays out in the coming chapters…
HEIST HEIST HEIST HEIST
The jewel in the heist will not be how Jodio gets rich, or else, perhaps it will prove more trouble than it’s worth. I say that based on nothing. Araki might pull a different trope regarding this jewel, but I doubt he’d make this into a Maguffin for very long.
