Elsa's Crochet Commissions

Yooooo, I'm Elsa. I am broke and between contracts. I'm attempting to get a small business off the ground, and while I am enjoying the process, it's slow going and I need money in the interim.

I crochet. I crochet a lot, and generally pretty quickly. I can crochet things for you, if that's what you're interested in--especially with Christmas in a few weeks. (granted, if you order something after we're already into December, it will probably not be finished, packaged, and shipped in time for Christmas, sorry) If you're interested in my ready-made stuff, there's a link to my Etsy shop in my pinned post. Things To Know:

I'll take three crochet commissions at a time, but they won't necessarily be first come, first serve. I'll probably work on all of them simultaneously, which means if Person A orders a shawl and then Person B orders a hat, Person B's hat will likely be done before Person A's shawl.

I do clothing items, accessories, plushies, blankets, etc.

I crochet. I do not knit. I do not know how to knit. I don't have any imminent plans to learn how to knit.

The price of the item will be determined by the complexity of the end result, the amount of time I estimate it will take, the type of yarn you want it made of (wool or cotton are more expensive than acrylic, alpaca is more expensive than sheep wool, etc.), and the cost of the pattern if you want a specific item and the pattern costs money.

Payment will be half up front, then half + shipping afterwards. I have Paypal and Venmo. (I prefer Venmo.)

The item will be made in an environment where cats and dogs are present, if you need to worry about allergies. I can't really feasibly escape them.

Once the details are determined, I will give the price and you'll pay half.

I will commence working. I can offer a rough estimate of when the item will be finished, but I can't make any guarantees.

When I'm done, I will take photos and show you. You'll send the second half of the payment + shipping.

I will package up the item and give you the tracking info, and get it to the post office, at which point it is figuratively and literally out of my hands.

Assuming the post office doesn't shit the bed, your item will arrive! Yay! I don't require photos of you with the item, but I will appreciate them.

Newly finished! I had so much fun with this, especially given that it was my first mosaic crochet pattern. I want to make a matching pillowcase with the same colours but a different mosaic pattern.

National Crochet Month

I am so behind on the fact that it is national crochet month! So here's a speed run of the first few days. And if you'd like me to expand some more on anything, my ask box is a open!

1. Meet the Maker -*waves* Gavii. Mostly crochet doilies but multistitchin with a current focus on blankets. 3 dogs. FFXIV. Thunderbirds.

2. WIP -I have four: a pair of socks, my long term temp blanket for the year, my FFXIV inspired blanket, and a quick market bag that just needs some straps added

3. Favorite Stitch - I'm rather partial to the HDC for its versatility with three loops

4. Something I'd like to try - Next on my to learn list is knit cables. I'd love to make a cabled hat. For crochet, I'm interested in trying mosaic or tapestry.

8. Crochet controversy - magic circle or chain start - like most things, it depends. I'll do magic circle to start doilies, especially if it's asking for sc. But for larger yarn weights and things like grannies, I prefer chain start because it feels more secure.

9. How I learned - I started on granny squares and my mom taught me - the rest I learned from reading patterns, trial and error, and watching youtube

Pouches! A loose guide

I love making little pouches, they take up so little yarn, and there are endless ways to make one. Hopefully this guide will inspire you to make some little pouches of your own!

vague recipe-esq instructions and examples below cut!

You will need:

yarn

the means and know how to turn yarn into a rectangle (be it knit, crochet, or any other method)

a bit of fabric for lining

sewing needle & thread, and a smidge of know how

ribbon or a button (only a maybe on this one (depends on your pouch))

Step 1: Make a Rectangle!

You can knit or crochet it. Most of the pouches in this post as examples were knit, with crochet closures, because that's my favorite way to do it. I like 2 row stripes, or mosaic knitting my rectangles for a bit of visual interest. Mosaic knitting is a technique where you strategically slip stitches while changing colors every 2 rows. I recommend it especially if you are wanting to try out knitted colorwork for the first time, as unlike other methods of knitted colorwork you don't have to worry about floats or working with both colors at the same time. The mosaic knitting charts I use are from Gannet Designs.

Since little pouches are one of my relaxing projects I don't plan them out really, I just make a rectangle and mess around with folding after the rectangle is done. Different ways of folding the rectangle will result in different proportioned pouches, find the shape you like best!

Step 2: Sewing/ Lining

Knit & crochet will stretch, so to prevent losing any treasures I put inside I like to line my pouches. Lining is also a great way to practice your hand sewing so you aren't too rusty when it comes time to repair your favorite shirt that just got a tear.

sew lining to pouch (inside out, flip right side out before sewing final edge to hide raw edges)

sew pouch together

Sew pouch together

flip pouch inside out

Whip stitch lining to pouch (fold edges of lining to hide raw edges)

Step 3: Closure

If you want to plan out you pouch ahead of time, you can incorporate a flap or drawstring holes while you are making your rectangle.

For knit drawstring holes *knit 2 together, yarn over* where you want the drawstring to be.

For crochet, *half double crochet, chain 1, skipping every other stitch*

I think it looks nicer if there's a bit of fabric on the edge of the pouch after the drawstring hole row. For my drawstring pouches I tend to add all the drawstring stuff at the very end. I crochet around the mouth of my pouch for a couple rows, do the drawstring row, a couple more rows, then finally a round of chaining 5 or more and slip stitching in the next stitch for a fun ruffle at the edge.

you can also knit an after thought drawstring, similar to the crochet one I describe (a few rows, drawstring row, a few more rows, a fun bind off). You will want to work in the round, so having familiarity with dpns or the magic loop method will be useful.

Flaps are also an option! and there's a a lot to explore. Just make any shape, rectangles and triangles are both great picks, but you can get super creative with flaps. Find a beautiful crochet leaf applique? Perfect flap! Circle? Why not! A rectangle where you cast on and bind off stitches on one side for a chunky fringe? I only just thought if it as an example and now I think I gotta try it, cus it sounds super cool!

Step 4 Extras!

Pockets have all the same fun & potential as flaps

String beads on your yarn before you make your rectangle. You can add the beads as you work in a pattern or let it be more random, either way you have a lovely glitzy pouch! You can also add beads to the ends of your drawstring

Give your pouch a face, arms, legs, tail, wings, to turn them into a fun and functional companion for your adventures.

make a long rectangle for a carrying strap, or smaller loops to loop the pouch onto a belt of off the strap of a larger bag. You can make extra long friendship bracelets for a strap that doesn't stretch, and marcrame has a ton of potential for cool patterns!

Weaponizing therapy speak can lead to such lasting trauma on victims. When Poppy and Zena discussed that on Youtube, I felt so very seen and understood. It was painful to see what they did to not only Spawn but Noeh too. I was honestly dumbfounded by the way they engaged and continue to engage in the exact same tactics they condemned. The ironic part being that they sort of armed me with the exact information and understanding of abusive dynamics that led me to see their bad behavior for what it really was.

Thank you again for the responsible and unbias approach you in particular have taken. I dont feel as upset as I did when I initially wrote that ask. Seeing people I dearly respected on their channel like bsw also speak out has also made me able to process the situation. Seeing people you genuinely looked up to and admired engaging in such destructive and hurtful behavior is a lot to process especially when you have so much else going on. It shouldn't be shameful when you have to grieve over a creator not being who you thought they were. Onward Fan Art Shout Out - 5

Theme: DIY! 🧵🪡

During my first sweep of going through the posts I'd saved in my Onward album on Instagram, I found many a DIY project in the mix! So this week I'm showcasing some of the best Onward-inspired DIY projects there are!

Much like my mini Onward journal I shared earlier this week, these pieces of art are personally-made! Some of them are items I wish I had myself! Others I believe were made for purchase at some point (likely when the movie was first released) but are now out of stock unfortunately...but everything here is so cool! Arts and crafts are so much fun to make and these artists look like they had a blast with what they created!

offtrackoutlet - cue Voyage to Adventure! Pixar's Onward coming to videocassette at a store near you! 📼 I really wish Pixar did release it on VHS tho just this once...they were definitely all the rage in the 80s! But this is an amazing cover for if we did get something like that!

Yes, I think they would do arts and crafts of all kind! I think their independent travels would provide them the opportunity to learn these skills profoundly. Maybe they even utilized those assets to make ends meet when they were first starting out.

Wrecker:

Scrapbooking (Wrecker would pour his heart and soul into this one, spending months gathering photos of he and the boys, working on the theme and accessories for each page before presenting it as a gift to Hunter :’) )

Candle or soap making (I think he would love all the different scents, colors, and textures to come with it!)

Pottery (Despite his destructive nature I think, given the right circumstances, Wrecker can be very dexterous and precise! I think he would enjoy pottery in its entirety; getting to form the clay, bake it, and then the painting!)

Knitting and Crocheting (This one would definitely take him some time to master and for a long while he would only stick to small items like socks or a scarf. But once he gets it. Can you just imagine sweet Wrecker making soft and cozy sweaters :’) )

Crosshair:

Calligraphy (Crosshair would do some beautiful calligraphy omg babe would kill it.)

Origami (I just see him finding this one really relaxing with all the different and random shapes to make; this one’s especially good for taking his mind off things and just zoning out for a bit.)

Jewelry making (Don’t sell him short he’s got a fine eye for that; Cross doesn’t see it as a “feminine” hobby he just sees it as art and a way to exhibit his craftsmanship and honesty I love that for him. He could make some beautiful necklaces and rings.)

Tech:

Beadworking (Tech’s excellent fine motor skills make him an ideal candidate for this; it can branch into many other crafts as well, in which I think he would enjoy the versatility there.)

Stained glass (I don’t know how to explain it but Tech just has a certain design style that I think he could really let shine through this one in particular.)

Metal working (I think this one would coalesce with his engineering work quite nicely.)

Hunter:

Wood carving (Need I say more.)

Basket weaving (Hunter very much gives off “rural crafts” vibes and I think he would be very good at this.)

Mosaic Art (A heavy culture-enriched craft, which is also something very befitting Hunter. I think he would enjoy the process of working with the small stones/tiles, diligently piecing each one to form a larger picture. Hunter is very tactile and loves working with his hands; he enjoys the challenging aspects to be found there so the more intricate the project the better. You’ll notice all three of these arts and crafts carry the same distinct theme: creating from scratch. I think the value there is very important to someone like Hunter. He likes creating things all on his own, for his own.)

Echo:

I don’t actually think Echo would participate in arts and crafts as far as the creating aspect, but he does love to be on the receiving end. He’s a great product tester. :) His favorite crafts to experience are the textile ones. He loves when Wrecker makes him a sweater or beanie, he gets cold often so receiving a nice hand-knit sweater—especially Wrecker’s hand-knit sweater—makes him feel all warm and fuzzy. :’)

Astrology & Fashion; Sagittarius

The main components in an individual’s chart to signify style is the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, and Venus. The Ascendant being the self, our identity, and appearance. The Sun being our lifestyle. HIGH FASHION

 Sagittarius are reminiscent of the monks, wizards, and alchemists of the past. It is not uncommon for Sagittarius to get their inspiration from ancient wisdoms and cultures. Sagittarius in its expression as high fashion demonstrates its philosophical, culturally interested, and free-spirited nature. Sagittarian fashion is a reflection of wherever their heart is, the environment around them, and places they once saw. The designers I decided to focus on to represent Sagittarius are Peter Dundas and Henry Holland.

 Peter Dundas’ designs for Emilio Pucci and Roberto Cavalli demonstrate how culturally and symbolically focused Sagittarius’ energy is. The Fall 2015 collection for Emilio Pucci especially has a unique array of mystique to it as it heavily focuses on the use of astrological signs in the designs. The deep jewel toned reds, purples, tawnys, and indigos also perfectly represent a Sagittarian colour palette. In Dundas’ designs for Roberto Cavalli we see patterns and mosaics that are undeniably culturally derived. Roberto Cavalli’s 2017 resort collection touches on Sagittarius’ soft spot for boho chic inspired looks.

 Henry Holland, a designer with a Sagittarius stellium, demonstrates another theme of Sagittarian fashion. In Holland’s designs, we see a more sporty and vibrant side to Sagittarius’ influence. Bodysuits, joggers, and vibrant tops. We also see symbolism and motifs, which speaks to both Holland’s Gemini and Sagittarian influences. Sagittarius also like to emphasize a longer silhouette.

STREET FASHION

Sagittarius in its expression as street fashion retains its philosophical nature and love for culturally rich inspired fashions. 

In street fashion, we see some Sagittarius’ drawn to the boho aesthetic as well as folk fashion (from either their own culture or not). Tartan, for example, and its ties to Scottish culture can be particularly of interest to Sagittarius because of its rich background. Some other examples of cultural influences (often seen in the fashion world) can come from traditional Scandinavian, Eastern European, Asian, African, American, or Hispanic iconography or art. Sagittarius love incorporating symbolically rich concepts to their outfits. Sagittarius often wear maxi dresses, palazzo pants, and other flowy garments.

Some Sagittarius’ prefer athleisure and comfort and opt to wear mostly leggings, sports bras, and other comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely. Sarah Hyland demonstrates this in her streetwear.

Finally, there is another selection of Sagittarius that dress as if they’re an archeologist or anthropologist you’d see in movies doing field work. You can see this professor-in-action aesthetic in Portia de Rossi and Liam Neeson in the third picture down below.

What couple is more adorable than Ruby and Sapphire? Especially when they fuse into Garnet? When they first learn that they 2 separate gems can fuse together, it’s the most adorable thing ever! They are just so cute and in love. Definitely one of my top OTP’s, and that’s saying a lot. Trust me. I have tons of OTP’s.

New crochet project! I've recently decided to use up all my yarn scraps and bits and bobs to make a very colourful Havana Afghan😊 I've only just started but I can tell this is going to take me quite a while to finish, especially as I'm such a slow crocheter!😅 I'm already in love with this project though, I just love this mosaic style of crochet and I can't wait to see how all the colours come together.
