since ofmd season is coming up here’s a little edit that i’ve never posted on here :)

sorry this ended up v jumbled. it really irritates me that colin's s2 "are you mad?" comment was so built up when all it did was lead into the teaching plot. his apology fell so flat to me bc he never actually explains why he said that - he says he shouldn't have said it, that he thinks v highly of pen, that he's not embarrassed of her, but then why did he say that? what was going through his head? idk i just don't think you can throw in a Moment like that, actively make it a source of conflict in the new season, then not actually explain why one of our main characters did it. i can certainly come up w a variety of explanations for it but i shouldn't have to imo. esp when it's about a character sorely lacking in interiority - having him question his own motives/instincts/w/e in an already plot-relevant moment seems like such an easy route to that for me. also the teaching plot in general was useless to me (both entertainment and plot-wise) - genuinely kind of convinced that it ended up in there bc they wanted ppl who read the books to not scream at them and they felt they had to contrive a reason for pen to be rejected by the ton but were doing everything they could to not comment on pen/nic's body At All. all it did was retcon some of pen's characterization (wrt her ability to speak to ppl) which really annoys me lol. the use of debling was so weird imo - also annoys me that pen never got a second option that was really viable (bridgerton's second options aren't ever romantically viable but daphne would have been a princess whereas pen would get ditched immediately for debling's travels). also violet's comment about colin never putting himself first is so confusing to me - i've seen ppl go on about how it's referencing that colin is a ppl pleaser basically but most big show things w colin revolve around him doing w/e he wants: literally no one approved of him and marina - he plans to elope; he spends at least half the year traveling on his own during which he's beholden to no one, pursuing his only interest, and completely relying on his family's money; his help w the cousin jack thing was just not a sacrifice for him; the comment to fife - he threw pen under the bus to (presumably) avoid feeling uncomfortable in a random conversation. obviously the way he pursues pen is meant to be a deviation from his supposed history of self-sacrifice but him actively fucking up pen's chances w debling bc he's decided that he wants to marry her now just seems v in line w colin doing w/e he wants the moment it comes to him. that sounds rough on colin i promise i like him most of the time lol.

you raise such good points, my friend, and imo it all leads to the fact that season three just severely mishandled their main characters. the change of writers would've meant some friction regardless, but the hard left all these characters took was a just. jarring. and bland! i do genuinely wonder if someone in this production did not have their heart in it, but then why focus on colin and pen at all? particularly when their story is meant to happen so many years after everybody else's. did they think they'd lose nicola soon? but then why doom her to the revolving door of main actors who leave a season after theirs? and then why make her character the framework for this show if you were just going to shuffle her out the door three seasons in? oh the whistledown thing makes me furious btw. that's the one thing that i truly, truly despise about the show. so truly stupid, false, and cowardly. i have a whole rant about it but every time i get into it i just combust with rage. having her apologize to the ton????? such a disservice to the character, to the narrative device--and to what end?

that really is the losing point of this whole season. nothing matters. nothing ever really mattered at all. i kinda knew when that was one of the first clips they showed as promo was the whole scene that they wouldn't go all in with it as the big betrayal i would've gone for but the fact that it literally had. no. importance whatsoever. same with the teaching plot! same with debling! none of these things had ANY impact. there were no stakes up until cressida came in and you know who those stakes were for? CRESSIDA. the only character to suffer any consequences was her--and truly the only character to be a character at all. the cressida plot, and the eloise and penelope plot, were about the only things i thought were sufficiently emotionally riveting to watch. even the queen lacked interiority compared to other seasons. everyone did! could it have been editing? i have no idea.

on the matter of colin: my working theory is that they just fully decided to chuck everything they'd been setting up with him because the character was harder to work into the Regency Male Lead mold and they didn't trust their audience to keep watching if he was not exactly like that. but they knew it was a hard turn, so they tried to cover it up with the whole "haha we are self aware of this thing we're doing! so it is totally on purpose, but like, in a good way!" type of way modern films in that marvel tone do? like, if we get the audience in on the joke (isn't it soooo funny how colin is acting way different? haha? laugh with us.), then we're absolved. and frankly, i said it on my other blog, that could have been a good plot, if they'd bothered to use it as a vehicle to interrogate literally anything. masculinity. regency leads. colin as a character. my god.

obviously, it did not work, which is why as you well point out violet's comment completely falls flat. his previous actions do not correspond. he's never done anything for anyone but himself, but he doesn't have to. that's anthony's job! and even that could have been interesting. what if colin started helping penelope only to find he has helped nobody at all? what if you are a worse person than you've thought you were? would deconstructing that image of him not be interesting? mind you i keep trying to find purposeful flaws for him because the show filed him smooth like a pebble. they were fearful, i think, and paid handsomely for it.

I totally didn’t forget to post this and had it fully finished in my drafts for days...totally. 

Naruto

What I love about them:

Naruto's a bratty kid who’s not afraid to speak up and challenge something he thinks is "wrong". This, of course, is part 1 Naruto. I actually like when he's a bit insensitive without being explicitly malicious bc its very fitting for his background/how he grew up but also gives him a clear path forward as he learns how to work as a team/starts to grow. It wasn’t exactly a smart move, but I really liked how he continued to challenge Zabuza in the Wave Arc saying “he’s still my enemy” after Kakashi told him to back off. This is all good and strong characterization that, to me, was more often endearing than it wasn’t. Naruto had goals and a purpose and in early Naruto that was still clear.

What I hate about them:

Part 2 (Shippuden) Naruto. There’s a lot that goes into this but the core deviation is getting away from the underdog story. In Shippuden Naruto is the son of the 4th, the Child of Prophecy, a reincarnation of the Sage of Six Path’s kid, makes friends with Kurama, and has the most OP power of the them all: Talk no Jutsu. What makes all of this even worse is Naruto went from a loveable bratty kid to an insufferable messiah figure. To be “perfect” his natural personality is shorn down until he’s only allowed occasional “stupid” mistakes rather than mistakes that emerge from his characterization. This also makes his ideological “wins” with villains...completely meaningless. Shippuden Naruto doesn’t really...have beliefs. He wants to be hokage and bring Sasuke back to the village. “Being hokage” was fine as a kid but I expected the progression into shippuden to be “what kind of hokage do I want to be?” This seemed natural bc we get in the Wave arc Naruto pushing against “what a shinobi is supposed to be: a tool” from Haku and declaring he’d make his own ninja way. Flashforward to the chunin arcs: hates Orochimaru for messing with Sasuke (esp when he eventually leaves to join him) and Neji for treating Hinata the way he did until he learned more about the Hyuga before declaring it wasn’t fair and you had to fight against fate and destiny. Tsunade’s arc was more about reemphasizing the village was something worth protecting and the Sasuke retrieval arc, while focused on Sasuke, at least kept up this theme. But these moments of growth are only alluded to in shippuden and by the time the war arc and ending come around...nothing changes. Naruto didn’t upset the status quo, he only maintained it. And once that ending was established it was a lot easier to go back and pick out exactly when his characterization started to fall through and the weird messiah figure took over instead. Part of this, imo, is the focus of his ultimate goal being “bring Sasuke back to the village” rather than understand what Sasuke is doing/why he’s doing it and then deciding to help him or stop him. 

Favorite Moment/Quote:

“You’re cute when you’re chubby” [in reference to the frog purse] 

I really love the quiet moments Naruto has and watching him live out his daily life. The frog purse is absolutely adorable and I love seeing it crop up time and time again. A close second is when Gai kicks Jiraiya in the face and, a short time later, offers Naruto the green tracksuit which he’s appreciative of. 

What I would like to see more focus on:

In Part 2 Naruto having a long-term goal alongside bringing Sasuke back to the village or trying to seriously think about why Sasuke does what he does and how that would potentially affect the plot. If I could go back to the very start, keeping the actual heart and intent of an underdog ninja story rather than everything turning into superpowered mecha/kaiju battles and aliens from space this is the big point that I’d want to address. In general, I really like fics that focus on training and give him a range of jutsu besides spamming shadow clones and rasengan variants. I’ve said this before, but if Naruto really wants to keep the “number 1 unpredictable ninja” moniker, learning a variety of small, diverse jutsu and using them in interesting/creative ways would be the way to go rather than spamming the aforementioned two. I also really like fics that buckle down and just go ham and create their own variety of jutsu, especially if it’s small practical jutsu rather than the latest and greatest OP Power #839281 kind of jutsu. 

What I would like to see less focus on:

The messiah figure. Talk no Jutsu. The obsession with having a morally pure hero in a world that routinely employed child soldiers and put them in war. I understand Naruto was a shonen manga first and foremost but like...this was the setting/world Kishimoto decided on having. However, I will say some fics take it to far on the other extreme for my taste, creating a edgy nihilistic Naruto that hates everyone and everything. 

Favorite pairing with:

Uhh...I don’t actually have a strong feeling for this one LOL. The most I’ve read has been SasuNaru (Sasuke x Naruto) because I’ve found really interesting set-ups. I like the ship and it does have a decent amount of backing in canon but it’s the little moments (or my ability to see possible little moments) that really make or break a ship for me. SasuNaru is all Big Declarations and I struggle to see how they’d actually settle down post Shippuden time into something sustainable. My favorite iterations of the ship is focused when they’re genin age and have a better relationship...but then I recognize that this is getting closer and closer to Hashimada. The other big things I run into with shipping Naruto with Sasuke is 1. Sasuke needs a shit ton of therapy/willingness to process his family related trauma and 2. Naruto needs a good support network/family outside of a romantic partner because it personally makes me uncomfortable to read ‘you’re my one and only’ (here being: I have no other friends, family, loved ones outside of you). It’s a ship that can work but it’s not my personal OTP.  

Favorite friendship:

Canon/OoT - Naruto & Sakura

I do have a softspot for fics where Naruto realizes his crush on Sakura is actually a desire to have friends/someone to care about him and then they do become close. In canon Sasuke was clearly the favorite of Kakashi (if chunin arc is kept the same/similar and he takes him away for the month to train) I really like Naruto and Sakura sticking together and trying to help each other. They’re both loud and can wind each other up but Naruto can help Sakura relax a bit from her rigid view of herself and she can help keep him on track/encourage him. 

NOTP:

Again, no real strong opinions here. Probably harems? I remember seeing a lot of those a couple years ago and I fundamentally dislike the harem so it will never be ‘done well’ to my personal taste. 

Favorite headcanon:

Naruto is smart, he just needs things to be explained in a way he can understand. 

I’m not a fan of ‘he’s the smartest person in the entire world’ trope but Naruto is creative, he created the oiroke jutsu before he graduated to genin and has a lot of stubborn determination. He’s just really bad at typical ‘book learning’ and traditional testing and he’s not a genius/prodigy like Sasuke or Neji.

Izuku

What I love about them:

He’s such a smart kid and while he’s unsure/insecure about himself he still does his best. Honestly the premise of BNHA is amazing and I was so excited to watch this little quirky (heh) boy do his best and outthink heroes, utilizing his intelligence and knowledge of quirks. I really love early Izuku and how he has to approach situations from a different angle bc he grew up quirkless/can’t properly handle OFA. The sports festival arc remains one of my personal favorites and really showed his ingenuity. I also really love that Izuku is openly emotional, he cries, he gets super happy about things, he’s angry, he’s sad, etc.  

What I hate about them:

Why do stories insist on calling themselves “underdogs” when for a majority of the time, they’re not? Or not as much as they would be from the original premise? Look, TDP came about exactly bc BNHA was billed as ‘quirkless boy becomes number 1 hero’ it changed rapidly into ‘Izuku gets the strongest quirk but can’t control it’ and while I was...disappointed with that, it happened so quickly I wasn’t really upset. Fast forward to apparently OFA has...what seven(?) quirks inside it and I just...it’s frustrating. Even more the longer we go the more Izuku strays away from a character that is forced to use his intelligence and creatively outthink his opponents and instead becomes...I just have to hit him harder! The Muscular fight already inched towards this but the Overhaul fight just felt like Super Shonen Smack-down 728329. Which, isn’t an inherent problem, it just doesn’t match up to the expectations I had about BNHA I had at the start and how I hoped the series would go. For a character trait that I hate: Izuku is stupidly self-sacrificing. It makes sense with his character but he shoots beyond what is safe and reasonable and I wish there would be more internal emphasis on the question “is it better to save one person today if it meant I couldn’t save ten people tomorrow?” I think he’d choose the former or forsake the question altogether (we touched briefly on this during the overhaul arc with Eri) but I think it’s a serious question needs to be touched on (or I just need to go back and rewatch things again LOL) 

Favorite Moment/Quote:

See entire sports festival arc. I don’t really have a favorite moment because I love the entire arc and we get so much out of it. 

What I would like to see more focus on:

Quirkless Izuku. There’s already a lot of fics, but I really do love them. It deviates a bit, but I do like the creativity of giving Izuku his own unique quirk and then exploring what he can do with that/how it changes canon. Really I want Izuku to keep his original characterization and not trade his smarts for more punching power or deus ex machinas for quirks hidden inside of OFA. If OFA!Izuku is kept, I like story ideas where he still has to rely on means outside of his quirk. Preferably this is isn’t because he injuries himself so much, but I like toying with the idea that Izuku never gets OFA to All Might’s level so he really does have to make the quirk his own and still rely heavily on his intelligence and quirk journals to become the number 1. 

What I would like to see less focus on:

Quirks hidden inside OFA. Strength should have been enough, it was already billed as the most powerful quirk of all. I know this is a common theme for shonen stories, and I don’t mean to harp specifically on Izuku, but again the premise of BNHA was an underdog story. 

Favorite pairing with:

Tododeku (Todoroki Shouto x Midoriya Izuku) 

Friends to lover and battle couples lads, I am weak to them. I like the contrast between their personalities as well as origins (Shouto being the number 2′s (now 1) kid and Izuku from a quiet civilian background). At the end of the sports festival arc both of them are extremely well characterized and it’s easy for me to imagine how their relationship progresses from there and how they can support each other and help each other grow. It’s a very sweet and wholesome ship the way I write and read it and it’s v cute.

Favorite friendship:

Canon- Midoriya Izuku & Uraraka Ochaco & Iida Tenya

I really like the core trio and think their interactions are really sweet. They balance each other out well and their friendship was immediately believable to me. I also like later when Tsuyu and Shouto start to get included in the group and out of the “main” core friends I’m endlessly entertained whenever Izuku and Tokoyami interact with one another. (This is also because I love my bird son, but you know.)

TDP - Midoriya Izuku & Ashido Mina or Midoriya Izuku & Hatsume Mei

Really, I love all of TDP’s kiddos interactions. Their chemistry is one of my favorite things about the fic and all the villain school kiddos meshed really well and had hilarious interactions. Mina and Mei are my faves but just barely. Mina came out of left field for the fic but she plays a similar role that Ochaco does in canon as a usual source of positivity (but unlike Ochaco with additional chaos). She’s Izuku’s first real friend even before starting HIVVE and wouldn’t hesitate to call Izuku her cousin as she views him as family. In return, Mina’s someone Izuku can completely count and depend on if necessary. Mei is...Mei. Izuku is her best “useful customer” and it’s actually terrifying how similar their thoughts are, just Mei has an (un)healthy dose of Hazmat’s insanity and her own business acumen added into the mix. They have slightly different fields of interest but are intellectual equals that work well together and that’s something new to both of them.

NOTP:

Bakudeku (Bakugo Katsuki x Midoriya Izuku)

It’s unhealthy. Unless it’s an AU that changes what the start of their relationship is like, Bakugo and Izuku will always have a toxic friendship to me and I can’t ever see them in a healthy relationship. Both of them have a lot to learn and I am of the opinion that Bakugo should get the opportunity to grow and become a good person and leave behind his past as a bully. However, I’m also of the opinion that no matter how good of a person a bully becomes their victim is never required to absolve them of past wrongdoings. Izuku and Bakugo were friends once, their relationship turned toxic, and now it’s in the interest of both of them to grow apart from one another. I even hesitate to really say they’ll be friends again because the early characterization of their relationship was so imbalanced to me, but for the right author and the right work I may see them being on good terms. It’s still a romantic relationship that I dislike. 

Favorite headcanon:

Crack headcanon? Izuku does have a natural quirk, the force of his tears is clearly superpowered 😂 Regular headcanon, (that is canon in TDP and kindaaa in regular canon(?)) when Izuku gets really engrossed in a super stressful fight he focuses on what will work rather than what is moral. It has...mixed results.

Shirin is definitely a night owl! He works by candlelight, late into the night...thats y he needs glasses...... his favourite time of day is probably midnight/when all is quiet and he can work w.o being disturbed, plus noam’s hair looks nice by moonlight (:

Hetty would very much resent this but shes gotta be on the softer side of the scale..... maybe a 7? she doesnt usually Behave very softly but shes a bag of tears on the inside - very practiced at Wrenching That Down though

Noam does zero planning, completely wings it, rolls with anything that happens.. he can follow someone else’s plan though if anything deviates it might.....escalate quickly........... because he’ll still want to get to the intended goal 💁‍♀️

Sura’s direct relatives aren’t around anymore, but he very much clings onto the importance of family & the feeling of belonging he had when he was still with them - when he finds the people that have his surname its very important to him to foster that familial bond

The Slowest Boil... she is very restrained so she doesnt confront a lot of things that make her angry (at least not @ the source of it)... she just glares when she thinks she can away with it lmao.. when it becomes too much she does reach a breaking point which involves angry tears

Sura’s vice is drinking for sure, he holds his liquor well but its not a good thing lol............. he tends to go for whisky, bourbon, sometimes port or wine

his behaviour doesnt change massively but he shows his mean streak more

i think ezra would distance themselves from people who a hurtful to the ones around them (not necessarily to ezra themselves?), esp if ezra liked those people 🤔 they’d also find betrayal of their family/elves in general very hard to forgive.. they definitely wouldnt Forget it happened even if they give them a second chance in the spirit of fairness

hetty would do anything to avoid this situation... she is So wary of actually letting people close enough to be able to hurt her & would be very frustrated with herself for not.. seeing a betrayal of trust coming i guess?

when Noam turns out to have been keeping A Very Big Secret from her, she doesn’t think she’ll ever forgive him but ofc... he was her best friend...and hes very sad and guilty abt it........and also her annoyance is redirected at Shirin when he forgives Noam first while still having massive scars on his throat

sura trusts his instincts a lot when it comes to putting himself in others’ hands - how much of himself he entrusts depends on the person, and the less it is the easier it is for himself to cut folks off when they do things he doesnt like

once he passes a certain threshold though, hes pretty much All In & will understand and forgive until hes blue in the face

kind of yes! they are generally very professional/capable/someone to look up to and admire & they foster this image because of their duties.. theyll yanno.. cover their mouth when they laugh unless its in front of close friends/family when they emote more freely

Hetty is not particularly organised Or disorganised.. its not a huge priority to her but she gets embarassed if its too messy (reminds her of Shirins pigsty habits)

Sura hasnt had to do a lot of organising in his life but has a lot of.. house-husband qualities so i think hed do just fine

Sura is definitely a talker, he knows very well how to speak to people to get his way & will talk over others if it serves a purpose 💁‍♀️ he also gets into the habit of expressing himself a lot around Hetty, Noam and Shirin bc they can’t read the flower language on his skin that telegraphs his feelings

Hetty only really talks when she feels comfortable.. even then shes not super chatty - Speaking Up about things if a very big thing for her and requires a lot of prep usually lol.. she would feel bad about talking over someone but might still do it

their voice: it's soft and medium-pitched. he doesn't usually raise his voice above speaking level even if he's agitated

their smile: he usually does a closed-mouth smile, it's hard to get him to grin with his teeth! but even his little smiles are usually genuine, since he's not the type to fake smile

their greatest achievement: he's something of a prodigy in the order and he's really talented and innovative with the lady's gifts

their insecurities: he's always worried about getting in trouble because despite often getting in trouble he's very unwilling to stray from the things he wants to do, so he's always trying to like.....fit his own desires into the framework of what he's supposed to be doing? and he's always a little uneasy about that because he knows he's supposed to be the order's golden child

their shortcomings: imdnfndndnf he's SO like........rigid?? that's not quite right and neither is stubborn, i described him as unbending and i think that's the closest? he's very much not the kind of person to be deviated from a path or way of thinking, not because he refuses to be swayed but just because he's so singleminded. he's also kind of naive and unsuspicious but luckily for him his tunnel vision makes him harder to manipulate. also he's. kinda lazy. fhfngndnf

how they deal with grief: outwardly he shuts down and powers through it, but it makes him prone to just like crying at random times and he also will become more emotionally withdrawn and prone to trying to do stuff by himself. if he's allowed to exercise by himself while he's grieving he'll sometimes go too hard and hurt himself

how they like to dress: he likes loose unrestricting clothing when he's not wearing his vestments because he is, unfortunately, a jock. he probably wears dresses a fair amount, but he also likes loose tank tops and shorts, that kind of thing

what they like to eat: he likes salty foods like grilled fish and he likes soups!

their theme: if the question is thematic arc i'm still hammering that out but his theme song is natsukage by KEY

their fashion sense: he really likes bold patterns and interesting fabrics despite his own tendency to wear plain neutral colors most of the time

their family life: he loves his mom and his little brother!!! him and fortune are close (both emotionally and in age) so they spend a lot of time together. their mom is a [term for luck-bearing person] while they're both [luck-using people] so they don't spend as much time with her, but they try to have meals with her at least once a week and they see her around the order with some regularity. the order isn't small but it also isn't super big so mostly everyone knows each other and it has that kind of familial aspect

their romantic life: he gets hopeless crushes on cute boys but never actually enjoys being around them fhsjdngndnf or like does enjoy being around them but in the same way you like being around people you're friends with. he's never actually dated anyone and he's never met anyone he's wanted to like actively chase after, but he does get a fair amount of confessions from people who like aloof-looking prettyboys

their embarrassing memory from years ago: when circumstance was little the room he shared with fortune was such a mess that once in the middle of the night a pile of his stuff collapsed onto fortune's bed and buried him and they had to get a bunch of adults to excavate him. fortune has never let him live this down

how they react to burning their tongue on food: sticks his tongue out, maybe does a small "ah", immediately goes to get an ice cube on it

how they react to a brainfreeze: that gif of paul rudd in front of a computer going "oh shit!!!" and closing his eyes really tight

their dreams: he dreams of a day when the order's outposts are connected more firmly and he can travel between them more often

their ambitions: he wants to discover new applications of the lady's gift!

   That  I’ve  ever  officially  picked  up  ,  excluding  trials  ?  I  think  strangest  in  terms  of  deviating  from  my  normal  muse  would  be  Luke  Bowen  ,  but  even  he  falls  into  several  of  my  normal  tropes.  Yaha-Kui  might  be  next  just  because  they’re...so  oblivious  to  the  simplest  things  like  even  chairs  bc  its  a  new  form  ,  but  they  also  follow  my  tropes  so...

12. Does your descriptive writing change with each muse, do they influence the way that you narrate and use language?

   I  think  it  does.  At  least  to  some  degree  it  does.  Speech  at  the  very  least  is  certainly  something  that  changes  among  some  of  them.  I  try  to  thin  that  the  descriptive  does  too.  I  know  it  typically  does  when  I  start  writing  the  muse  but  i  don’t  know  if  it  really  sticks.  Some  muses  are  certainly  more  simile  /  metaphor  heavy  than  others.  Like  Yukari  ?  Lots  of  metaphors  or  symbolism.  Nagare  ?  Next  to  none  really.  Like  Yukari  would  describe  a  cold  touch  like  winter’s  embrace.  Nagare  ?  He’d  have  me  just  write  that  its  cold  lmao.

14. What is your opinion on formatting, editing and icons within the community? How do you style your own, do they differ from muse to muse?

   I  mean  ,  do  whatever  you  want  to  do.  But  the  super  subscript  formatting ,   that  I  definitely  dislike.  Hello  I’d  like  to  read  ,  please  and  thank  you.  Also  dislike  the  20x20  icons.  I’m  not  kidding  ,  I’ve  seen  them.   I  like  icons  ,  especially  anime  icons  (  i  tend  to  use  them  before  anything  else  )  but  idc  if  people  use  them  or  don’t.  Tbh  I’m  debating  keeping  the  double  space  or  just...not.  It’s  second  nature  to  me  now  so  I  don’t  think  about  it  but  idk  if  it’s  problematic  for  some  ;  if  they  like  it  or  nah.  My  icons  definitely  differ  from  muse  to  muse.  None  of  them  have  the  same  psd  or  design.  They’re  not  even  slight  changes  ,  its  quite  different.  My  OnS  muses  are  probably  the  most  similar.  That  or  my  Obey  Me  since  i  use  Solomon’s  seal  for  his  ,  and  then  Barbatos’s  seal  for  his.  I  try  to  keep  around  the  same  size  though.

hey so I’ve always wanted to play dnd and I finally found a group that would be down! the only issue is I don’t really know how to come up with a character? I’ve seen a character sheet before but I just don’t have any imagination. I also have pretty bad social anxiety so I’m just really fucking nervous about being kinda creative in front of people. do you have any tips for first time players and for coming up with character backgrounds? thanks!

hmm. it’s different for everyone & i have been making story characters since i was like 9 years old so i don’t know how much help my own methods would be, but i Do know that the players handbook & im sure lots of online resources have super fun & handy tables to roll on so that u can pick all kinds of character features at random. i do suggest that u choose ur class bc that’s where a lot of the fun Action stuff is, so if u want to be a weapons person u will want to pick a class that fits that accordingly.

ur character doesn’t have to be the most amazing fantastic creative thing in the world! if ur worried abt creating smth, why not pick a character u admire in tv or a favourite book or real life & try to recreate that in dnd? u would know how they might react in a given situation & as the game develops u can hone in on that or u can deviate from what That character would do as actions make their consequences in game.

for example, let’s say uhhhh joan of arc.

i would say she’s a human girl, about five feet tall, 16 years old. i might give her the knight of the order background & make her a fighter or a paladin (there’s no wrong answer to how u want to interpret a character. u could say she is a warlock with a celestial patron, for example). i would name her darcy. she would wear simple armour. she would have the insignia of a burning pyre sewn into the cover of her holy book. she’s not a cleric but she prays for guidance or every morning when she wakes up or smth. so there’s race, class, & background. then u could use the tables to generate things like Traits, Bonds, Ideals & Flaws or u can pick ur own, things u think might make other people laugh or things that might have interesting playable qualities. i had a look at the characteristics for fighter & picked some that might fit. for darcy, i might say for Traits she prays every day, like i said earlier, & maybe that she has a very strong code of honour. Bonds: there is nothing more important to her than (defeating The Enemy, defeating a specific enemy, protecting her people) that kind of bond can play out in so many cool ways, not necessarily only in killing an enemy. Ideals: reserved. She is cautious and respectful in her dealings. But she’s also a 16 year old girl, maybe very far from home, so she might also be inquisitive or filled with a thirst for adventure! maybe those two ideals clash at times when she wants to be respectful & reserved but she also wants to see Everything & ask a lot of questions & also, maybe her reserve is tested when she comes across a cultural habit she finds distasteful or cruel or vulgar. what might happen then? she only has the experiences of a 16 yo like i said. fun to think abt. & Flaws in particular are wonderful & i think given the traits & ideals i gave her its pretty likely that: she is secretly (or not so secretly) convinced of the superiority of her own culture/god/homeland/whatever over that of this culture/god/land etc.

i hope this helps? by taking a character u like & seeing how they might fit into dnd, i think it also helps to define what exactly each aspect Means, like class & background, & u can start to play around with it. if ur anxious, u can make that part of ur play style & eventually as u grow more confident perhaps ur character will as well. maybe it is reflected in a low charisma score, or an untrusting demeanour. i will warn u that it was surprising for me, an incredibly anxious person at times, to almost immediately want to Protect, Help, & Do Good Things for my party so i have given up trying to make suspicious characters (being a DM, on the other hand, is an entirely different story)

anyway! dnd is so much fun to actually Play, watching it truly doesn’t do it justice esp if u have good people in the group with u. remember to listen, be respectful of others, & above all Have Fun! if u want to talk more abt characters, i would be truly delighted !

the plot, probably. a lot of that being because he cares and really worries a lot abt my safety and knows i’m in way over my head getting involved in this, and knowing that i already died once before, how easily it could happen again scares the shit out of him. and he just hates that i’m getting involved. even though he knows lucio has to be stopped and someone has to finally put all of this to an end he wishes we could just hide away and shut it all out.

that muriel and i were close before i died. that he partially blames himself for my death, bc i assume he hid away in the forest to try to outlast the plague and left me alone while i died, maybe didn’t even know i was sick until after it was too late like asra. and that’s why he’s so cold at first, because he’s still so hurt by it. and because i don’t remember him, and won’t no matter what - like, that scene in his book vi where the apprentice wakes up and doesn’t remember him and he’s extremely annoyed by that? sure it’s because it’s the first time in a while he’s wanted someone to remember him. but also because it really drives home the point that i’ll never remember him and even if i’m sitting right in front of him he’s still lost me.

* smithing & armour maintenance he only ever picked cause it was something familiar in a new environment, comfort taken in already having knowledge of this one thing at least and being able to absorb more in as well-- which lead to him realizing it’s definitely not what he wants to actually do when trying to plan his future. this leads to him picking up drawing class bc that is also something that he’s already familiar with, to a lesser extent and kept as a hobby so far ( beside using it as another tool for visioning his smithing projects ) but he wants to try if there’s any spark there to go deeper into the arts.

** long story short he used to live with these guys back in Seoul before coming to Vighulir of which two were dancers and one thing led to another Deni spent a lot of time hanging at their dance studio and eventually that and a sum of many things led to him accepting jobs as a stripper. He might argue it’s for semi-professional self improvement but reason lies somewhere in between that and why he took swimming & diving classes-- bc it seemed like easy fun and exercise and allowed him access to the pools. also it certainly was a plus to see classmates in.. less clothes. yep. he’s that guy.

with @rxelizabeth‘s departure he has more time for other people, but she will still be very much part of his canon and their friendship is still a thing and she will be mentioned here and there in threads. you can deal with that however you like, sometimes it’s ofc easier to pretend the muse was never there but at the very least if your muse has been aware of either of them it would make all the sense to note a missing presence, as he went a good 6 months basically attached to hip with her and I refuse to erase what was a huge part of his time in the academy

while he has people he considers sort of friends he will mostly be seen with @ravan-ia now, someone he considers one of his closest friends and may or may not latch onto now that.. rest have left.

it’s no secret him and @kimhyolyn-ia are banging and they own zero subtlety in public bc who needs that lmao feel free to mention that if you want I assure neither of us or the muses care

his schedule wont change much, or the locations deni generally hangs out in but a short summary to make everything easier for yall in regards of plotting and where to catch him at what times ( this isn’t fixed by any means, but more to give direction of his typical week, excluding visits to certain other parts of the academy grounds or trips to Vighulir )

Beside taking forever and after to get ready in the mornings, from waking up to the end of the school day not a whole lot of deviation can be made, tho he might skip sometimes, rarely, it happens. class projects are always a fun thing to thread winkwink.

lunch however is spend at wherever he feels the need to go, and with whoever happens to be closest so he can bother them.

library is a place he does spent some amount of time, either right after school to deal with homework or for research, or the last few hours of the day which usually are spent less looking for books than people.

randomly goes to the academy roof

the common room/roof garden in Sol Solis dorm is a location he absolutely still goes to ( used to hang there with Eliza ) even by himself or dragging someone else along. or trying to be sneaky during free nights to smoke weed there. or get drunk. a favourite pastime >_>

Ignis dorm is another he frequently spends not only hours of a day but some nights in as well, thanks to Ren’s hospitality ( as in Deni just pretends it’s half his room now cause damn have you seen that shit so much nicer that what he was left with )

do I even need to mention Luna dorm for obvious reasons. It’s not the bar. Though he’s an occasional fan of it yes.

This said he honestly doesn’t spend much any time at all at his own room in Aqua dorm, beside other reasons he’s simply always elsewhere with someone, or if he does happen to be present he’s very rarely alone.

This leads to; Deni works at the casino in Pidvone Misto during weeknights, monday--thursday but not always every night. Which means he is usually unavailable from late evening to 3am ish at what time you may catch him returning to the dorm. usually sober but, it’s not too uncommon to witness the opposite either

free nights are a roll of a dice but if he’s not catching up on sleep like he probably really should be, or got nothing else going on best believe he’s out there clubbing and drinking all that hard earned money into oblivion

about 90% of weekends he spends in Seoul, working at one of two clubs he gets assigned between. That covers his nights. days however are generally free beside the side job he’s got. Namely dealing and doing drug runs. Coincidentally for the same people who own the nightclubs. That’s a thing yes. though someone’s stirring their spoon in this mess soon stay tuned ;>

with the arrival of another two-seventy ( at last do you hear me crying tears of joy ) @kangjun-ia I do need to mention this lil thing about Deni still keeping it a tightly guarded secret what he actually is. As it stands, no one who absolutely should know ( to his knowledge ) is aware of this and he’d prefer to keep it that way. With the exception of our late-dropped Seline & Hongbin. and other exceptions to this rule being if your muse is some type of necromancer/exorcist OR is an ancient fart and you think they would be able to tell, then ya go ahead and make it so! I’m fine with it as well if your muse has been in contact with another one of their kind in the past and would be able to pick on that particular aura.

now, development will happen of course and beside having my own plans for this entire matter I’m always down for exploring that side of him but it’s a slow burn and I’m totally fine with that tbh. if Jun is going about telling people it would make sense that your muse starts seeing/sensing the connection as, well, we do have plotted they will be acquainted so ouo put my muse in an uncomfortable spot I dare you.

From Hunters Chosen, chapter 5, the part starting with "A lie, then.I have delicate skin, my lord." and ending with "It’s beautiful in its simplicity".

what I was thinking when I wrote it: i constantly have to remind myself of this lexa, of what i want her to be bc she’s different from other lexas i have written & currently less familiar to me. so in lots of important moments (actually almost all the time rly) im making sure i don’t deviate too far from how i want This lexa to be.

the rest of the section past the lie was rly fun to write. i had been wanting to write descriptors that relied less on explanation - such as lexas observations - & more on action that the reader could just absorb. so padraig drumming his fingers becomes a tell for him, one that seems ominous for lexa bc he’s so important & she knows she’s in a bit of a situation there, but one that isn’t necessarily ominous. i wanted to hunt at padraig’s humour & his sense of honour, & the introduction of lady fiola was rly fun too, as a little expansion of the world.

why I wrote it in the first place: one of the things that’s rly fun for me is taking familiar story lines & giving them a little twist to make them funny. in the original series, everyone already knows the line is “i fell” & i knew that anyone who had read it would be expecting those lines esp since lexa is rly tough. so when this lie occurred to me, i started Laughing & i knew that i had to keep it.

what’s going on in the character’s heads: lexa is all wrapped up in walking this very thin line between outright lying to padraig & telling the truth, which isn’t a position she enjoys being in. she would prefer to just lie tbh but padraig Knows the truth, which means she can’t really lie (until she gets quite explicit approval). padraig is struggling with some of the things he’s always believed. he’s been struggling for a while & hes mostly accepted that girls can be as strong as boys & can fight as well as boys but he still has some trouble with things like girls are sweet & kind & honest & obedient. there haven’t been many girl pages still & a lot of them have been rather kind & obedient so now that he’s face to face with this kid who he’s starting to suspect is only obedient or honest when it suits her own direction & morals, yeah he’s struggling with what to do about that. Also he’s struggling with the fact that he likes her smarts bc he’s so used to being obeyed.

fiola is just having a great time she thinks this kid is the tiniest kid she’s ever seen & has a mouth & a half

why I chose certain words: mmm “delicate skin” made me laugh so much. i loved the silliness of it combined with lexas absolute seriousness & polite wording with “my lord” this & “my lord” that. i had fiola help out a bit bc them working off each other was rly fun & lexa was delighted to have the attention of a lady knight who she looks up to

what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic: i think lexa takes this in part as tacit approval of fighting tbh? like she’s scared at first that she’ll be dismissed for fighting - or maybe for losing - but then that doesn’t happen & it keeps not happening & she’s like right so this is how people solve their problems. lexa learns a lot by example & by logic that isn’t stated but repeated. so someone might say to her that pages aren’t supposed to fight each other but…… pages DO fight, & padraig doesn’t rly punish them, which means that pages Can fight each other. i think lexa is super smart so it doesn’t mess w her logic too much but she is a little more ready to fight back from then on.
