tryna find a game - help is appreciated!
i vaguely remember watching some playthroughs on youtube about this game. The art style for the characters were sorta escapists styled but when you clicked on them to chat their style would become (still pixelated) more realistic. The game was set in a school and you would run around doing various tasks/quests for teachers and students.
if anyone has any idea what this game is, please leave a comment i’ve been looking for a while now :,)

Guard Break: The Next Big Hit from The Escapists Creator
Tumblr media
Guard Break turn-based RPG game from the The Escapists creator is coming to Linux and Mac with Windows PC. Thanks to the creative minds at Sudden Kebab Studios. Working to make its way onto Steam. If you're a fan of old-school JRPGs from the golden age of the genre, listen up — Guard Break is coming. It's also shaping up to be something special. This turn-based RPG is the brainchild of Chris Davis, the original creator of The Escapists, and his new studio, Sudden Kebab Studios, with plans for a native port.
The game is built in Unity, so I assume a Linux/Max port will be happening down the line.
Sudden Kebab Studios gave a positive response, but it's still too early to expect Linux support. The good news? They have plans, and since the game development is using Unity, a native build is very likely. Gameplay throws players into the Kingdom of Arcadia, a land on the brink of chaos. An unknown terrorist group is shaking things up, and it’s up to you to step in and restore order. Expect a story-rich adventure full of political intrigue, personal conflicts, and tough choices that are due to shape the journey.
Guard Break - Reveal Trailer
youtube
What Makes Guard Break Stand Out?
This isn’t just another JRPG—it’s a love letter to the 32-bit era. Bringing in the best parts of the late ‘90s classics while adding fresh ideas. Here’s what makes it worth keeping on your radar:
A Classic JRPG Feel – Everything from the 3D visuals to the music screams nostalgia, giving it that late ‘90s vibe. If you grew up on those PlayStation-era RPGs, you’re going to feel right at home.
An Engaging 8-10 Hour Story – No unnecessary grind, no filler—just pure story-driven gameplay that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
Multiple Playable Characters – No single "main hero" here. You’ll experience the game through an ensemble cast, each with unique skills, weapons, and personal arcs.
A Dynamic Bond System – Every decision matters in Guard Break. Your dialogue choices impact relationships with your allies. Support one, and you might upset another. Build strong bonds, and you’ll unlock special combat perks.
Strategic Battles, No Random Encounters – See enemies on the field and decide when to engage. Combat is fast, turn-based, and built around a clear move queue, so you can plan every action.
The Guard Break Mechanic – This is where the real strategy comes in. Enemies have weak points, and targeting them breaks their guard, leaving them open for massive damage. Time your moves right, and you’ll crush your foes before they even get a chance to hit back.
When Can We Play It?
There’s no release date yet, but we do know Guard Break is coming to Linux, Mac, and Windows PC, via Steam. If you’re a JRPG fan, this is definitely one to watch. Stay tuned — this might just be the next big turn-based RPG.

The Escapist looks doomed following mass staff exodus, including Yahtzee Crowshaw, creator of Zero Punctuation
Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Croshaw, the creator of the immensely popular Zero Punctuation video series, and numerous others have resigned from The Escapist gaming website. Those leaving equate to the website’s entire video team. This all occurred on Monday 6th November and appears to be due to The Escapist’s owners, Gamurs Group, decision to fire editor-in-chief, Nick Calandra. Calandra had been with The…

i am always leery of ttrpgs, particularly fantasy games, that designate a particular group of people, usually a race or species, as the 'bad guys' who can be killed without any moral issue on the part of the pcs. fantasy as a genre has a racism problem and this kind of thing can go unchecked in what is meant to be a fun escapist hobby

Why do you hate Doren? ;_; I'm curious but also hurt. UnU
I could absolutely just give you a funny answer like 'he fucked my mom' or something and you can take that as my answer but if you want a prolonged explanation I'm gonna warn you it has some shit to do with Grooming. so read at your own risk? and btw. its my opinion. if you like Doren I'm not gonna light you on fire. its fine to like them and indulge in dol I am by no means saying you should hate him!!! but for real he reminds me so much of every pedo teacher ever who wanted to protect students from the big bad outside world just to groom them. FR dude (gender neutral).
especially my drama teacher back in highschool who was delibritaly grooming kids like not even subtly. she bragged that /special/ students were welcome at her home for help or whatever they needed. handed out her personal phone number to kids who "needed" it. even kept in contact with several students after they graduated. One poor dude moved to the UK to get away from her. (some real sketchy shit must have happened there.)
but yeah. Doren gives me pedo-teacher vibes and not in an escapist fantasy way (like Sirris or Winter) and I know everyone is like 'he's so sweet to the pc' but I'm constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop on this bastard because it feels to REAL. I've seen this tactic in real-time. and it kinda makes me sick and I will kick his ass into the sun because I don't trust him

One thing I really appreciated was my Rook being able to respond to issues of womanhood in Taash's personal quest.
I kind of thought, because it said Rook's identity wouldn't effect gameplay, that we would be getting sort of a genderblind character. Like, I can't remember a moment in Inquisition (outside of a romantic scene) where the Inquisitor was addressed/responded differently based on their gender other than the occassional lord/lady.
II and origins did have unique dialogue based on character gender, so did Mass Effect, but usually it was in response to some sort of sexist remark. Like a female warden having to justify her womanhood to Sten, Shepard being told the "strippers go that way" in ME2 - the only time it seems to come up is when the PC is experiencing some sort of sexism. Usually it's followed by the option to kick the offending sexist's ass - which is always fun. But as a woman who enjoys video games, it's always a reminder that I can't escape these issues even in my fantasy escapist world.
Something just made me really happy seeing my character asserting herself as a woman, saying "I love being a woman", in a series where in previous entries, being a woman wasn't always easy for the female PCs. <3

31 Days of Dragon Age (Day 2)
missed day 1 so i'll just jam both prompts into this post
Introduce your Hero of Ferelden & Favorite Origins romance
Oct 01 - Introduce your Hero of Ferelden
i don't have any images currently because my origins playthroughs all took place on the ps3 or a PC that i no longer have, but a rundown of my main three HoF incoming: neira mahariel - DW rogue with the ranger spec.
she was actually my second playthrough, after i used my first one to acquaint myself with the game and its lore before i dove into the roleplaying aspect of it. neira started out as your typically distrustful dalish elf, who resisted becoming a grey warden every step of the way. she didn't care if she was tainted and slated to die, she did not want to leave her clan, and she resented duncan for dragging her away from them. ultimately, she fell in love with zevran, though not until well after she'd gotten closure and properly grieved for her first love, tamlen. neira's seriousness mingled well with zev's more playful approach to the horrors of life, and that created a healthy bubble for them to be vulnerable and supportive with one another. ultimately, left anora to rule ferelden on her own, since alistair didn't want to become king and neira didn't want him to have to give up "his clan" (the wardens), but did convince him to undergo the dark ritual with morrigan. has since disappeared with zevran in search of a cure for the calling and according to the experts (my headcanon), they're doing just fine now, thanks.
syrill amell - mage (obviously) with the spirit healer spec.
he was a smartass, irreverent brat at the circle, but in that way that people still liked him, even when he was getting on their nerves. vain and prideful, he was also totally the type of mage that a demon would have loooooved to get ahold of...if not for the fact that syrill was also a gigantic nerd and studied frequently to avoid falling into the pitfalls of becoming an abomination. jowan was his buddy, in a "sidekick" sense, and it definitely annoyed syrill that jowan went and did...All Of That behind his back, but he still did what it took to free him and keep him safe when the opportunity arose. truly hated being in the circle (though not to the 'escapist' degree of anders), and truly, truly hated the templars, so he jumped at the chance to leave when duncan rolled in (ignoring all the blood everywhere and all that). he and alistair did not get along at all, but he fell all over himself to impress morrigan the second that he met her. somehow, his cringefail attempts at charm and his really nice hair won her over, and they fell in love. he spared loghain, not wanting to risk losing someone who knew what they were doing when it came to big battles, and alistair stormed off, never to be seen by syrill again. oops. post-game, he actually grew up quite a bit as the warden commander, but he never let go of his love for morrigan, often wondering about her and the child they supposedly had together. come witch hunt, he went with her without hesitating, and instantly loved their son the second that he met him. lived with his family for years in the crossroads, became a Certified Fun Dad, and only left them to try to cure the calling. as far as i'm concerned, he's currently hovering over kieran's shoulder while morrigan is away, not ready to see his baby boy (read: a 20 year old man) move out on his own.
vaye brosca - DW rogue with the assassin spec.
Hardened Criminal with a heart of gold. we love that trope, right? vaye's another warden who didn't want to leave her home, but her sister's pleading ultimately prompted her to do so. everything that vaye did was for rica's sake anyways, so she left, and was a fish out of water every step of the way since then. her go-to response to most problems was Knife, which her companions needed to break her of that habit really quickly (or, in zevran's case, teach her how to wield it with a little more grace). every single awkward, socially-inept dialogue choice was put to good use with this character, but somehow that ended up making her blisteringly honest and very capable of cutting through the bullshit in order to tell when she was being manipulated. ironically, fell in love with leliana because she was able to see through her layers and they found common ground with their bloodied pasts. quickly became the squishiest of romances, and vaye really loved gifting her the nug (something from her home that leliana didn't yet understand), and the flowers (something from leliana's home, that vaye didn't yet understand). since vaye understood that "king = power = safety", she nudged alistair to marry anora and rule jointly, and when she was named paragon, she was happy to see her sister elevated to nobility so that she could marry king bhelen and also enjoy that much safety. is currently living in a villa on the waking sea, surrounded by nugs, waiting for when leliana can come home.
Oct 02 - Favorite Origins romance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actual Love Of My Life, Zevran Arainai
on my aforementioned tester first playthrough, i made a city elf and romanced alistair and went around flirting with whoever i could, just to get a sense of what sorts of characters i was dealing with. the inevitable "time to choose" conversation with zevran, though, really surprised me and gave me serious enough pause that it decided my first "real playthrough"'s romance for me right away. i was struck by how zevran, who'd been such a flirty, casual guy in this department up until then, was making it very clear that he didn't want to hurt alistair with any continued dalliances, given how much the other guy was clearly falling. he was sincere and respectful, and didn't even lose approval when i opted to have my tester warden break things off between them, and that kind of care and maturity really won me over.
fastforward to my neira playthrough, and that sincerity and deep, terrified love really, really solidified itself as an rpg favourite for me. you really feel the progression from "for fun" and "for life" with this relationship. it has its silly moments ("is there something in your tent that needs...assassinating?" or the dirty antivan poetry that he tells you just to make you laugh), and it has its truly moving moments (the earring scene, especially if you ask him if he's proposing, his farewell scene at the game before the final battle). and in the end, he stays with your warden through everything. yes, his DA2 appearance was fully bugged on import so i never actually saw him acknowledge the romance to isabela, and yes, i'm still bummed that he's the only origins romance that didn't get an appearance in inquisition, but a romanced zevran is still stated to be traveling with the warden in their letter, so he's still with them, after all these years, keeping them safe and helping to save their life. again. all because they spared his at a time when he didn't care if he lost it.
there's something really lovely about your pc being a character's first love, but there's something even lovelier, to me, about them being a character's last love, and the zevran romance is exactly that. it's still my number one of the series, no matter how much more content some of the others have in comparison.

So The Escaptist Youtube is Dead
Tumblr media
I know what you're thinking, "Wow this twink is late to this party-JESUS CHRIST GET OUT OF MY HEAD!" To that I say, calm down, you're giving me a migraine. Also yes, this is an old story now. I still want to share my thoughts on it though.
For those of you who don't know, the Escapist magazine had a fairly popular YouTube channel centered around game criticism, development, and commentary with the one and only Benjamin Yahtzee Croshaw hosting the most popular show on the channel, Zero Punctuation. A series that has been going since 2007 and is the source of the PC gaming master race meme. In recent years the Escaptist brought on the editor Nick Calandra to lead the video department. He managed to lead a golden age for the Escapist YouTube channel, there hasn't been this much variety since before Yahtzee became the only creator on the channel.
It all came crashing down on November 6, 2023, when the Escapist decided to fire Calandra and a good portion of the video team. This was the biggest mistake the magazine has ever made, because apparently everyone, and I do mean everyone involved in video making absolutely loved Calandra and they all quit on mass. This was such a disaster for the escapist that the YouTube channel was dead for two weeks until the remainder of the video backlog was all uploaded at once. Meanwhile everyone started up a new channel called Second Wind with all the shows that were on the Escaptist with the exception of Zero Punctuation. When Yahtzee originally joined the Escapists in 2007, he sold the rights to his original show called Fullyramblomatic. The Zero Punctuation name was fully on the Escapist, and also the designs of Yahtzees avatar and the little jelly bean imps. For the first week Yahtzee had to figure out a new name and design where upon he landed on a legally distinct version called Fully Ramblomatic with a space, and now the imps are replaced with dogs, because dogs are great, and Yahtzee's fedora is black and he now has a suit and glasses. Clearly they're taking the piss on the Escapists for the whole situation. All the other shows also kept the art style of Zero Punctuation, most keeping the names too.
This isn't the first time this happened either, they dropped the ball on Extra Credits when they didn't pay them, and screwed over Stephanie Sterling with not publishing their reviews. Those two are what eventually lead to Yahtzee's takeover of the channel. Now the channel is sitting there dead, hasn't been updated since the last Zero Punctuation compilation was published. Now the Escapist YouTube channel may never recover, they still own Zero Punctuation, but what are they even going to do with it aside from just sit on it like a jewel in their dragon's hoard. The rest of the magazine is doing fine, so they may just pivot purely to that for the next few years. Second Wind is currently thriving on the audience that jumped ship while also being fully independent, which means more swearing.
In the meantime, join me as we sing a little tune that I feel is very appropriate for this.
Let's all laugh at an industry that never learns anything teeheehee!

Things tend to simmer down for most things between movies/series, it is frustrating though. But everyone will reanimated when we get close to the next movie, and then we can all jump back into it!
Tbh I feel like, as big as the Avatar universe is, theres not much offered in canon material about much of it. And its been that way for much of the franchise history, most of which has been retconned or otherwise abandoned. So the dearth of writings about canon material and story potential in favor of fanfic and smut, at least on this platform, is rather lackluster.
It could be that Avatar as a franchise is just weaning off me finally. I mean, A2 didnt have much effect on me and while I enjoyed engaging fandom while the movie had its theatrical run, its plot and delivery still had so many issues and poor politcal implications that it was hard to enjoy the material and interact w fans who didnt have much to say abt it or otherwise condoned it (ex: the misogyny written of Neytiri's character, the rampant white saviorism and noble savage imagery of both films, etc).
I think I'm being a bit harsh here, but again, its my bias, Avatar could just be something I'm growing out of, or I'm just not seeing anything interesting. I'm quite picky abt what I enjoy in the franchise and the canon's development hasnt offered much, imo, that resonates w me as a black woman.
I mean, theres FoP, which is an Avatar experence full of lore and creative references to politcal issues and indigenous cultures, for sure. And while I have no consoles or PC compatible with the game to fully enjoy that myself, I still found ways to engage and enjoy it through LetsPlays and wikis and the Kelutral server; I enjoy analyzing and just consuming it as escapist entertainment in general. And ofc theres the Na'vi language, which I rlly enjoy learning and applying as it's helped me so much w my general polyglot ambitions where otherwise I struggled learning language (I've made a lot of speech recordings of it lately, for instance).
But despite those things, I'm personally a bit burned out by the fan experience online, or at least on Tumblr. Its just evident to me that the lack of things to talk abt canon-material wise means there wasnt much to begin with and/or the fanbase isnt as critical or interested as I'd hope about such material. Its quite disappointing. Again, I'm rlly not into fanfic. Not to say I dont enjoy non-canon material, but I've always prefered visual/illustrative media. Also, I just dont relate to much of the younger fanbase, who seem fixated in their sexual desires for the characters and not much else lol. Waiting almost an entire year for A3—IF it doesnt get delayed again—without much stimulating engagement from fandom is quite a bummer for me.
But perhaps its better to have patience lol.
A3 and its fandom will be my litmus test for whether I continue as an Avatar fan or finally move on.💀

Love that you’re talking about this topic! As a gamer of color who plays with an otherwise all-white group, my personal experience is always that I’m so much more relieved when even one of the other players creates a non-white PC. My characters are always POC, and it would just feel weird to me to be the one POC in an all-white group even *in a fantasy world*. Like it already happens all the time in real life! Why recreate that in gaming?
Also, if we take that “white players should not play characters of color” seriously, then… white DMs shouldn’t be allowed to voice anything but white NPCs, meaning that our escapist worlds would also become entirely white D: No thank you!
Anyway, from me to your friend personally: being mixed-race and white passing can be such a tricky thing to navigate, but again personally whenever I’ve seen a white or white passing friend play a character of color, I feel *more* welcomed and more safe at that table. Just my two cents!
Thank you for ur input! I’m so glad to hear this!!! I know everyone is going to have different thoughts and opinions on this topic but I’m really glad it makes you feel more welcome!
I’m of the same mind personally. Any time someone is playing as an ethnicity - or life experience such as disability or sexuality etc - other than their own it’s fine so long as they do so with respect :D but I understand why others might be more wary
Thank you so much for your in put!!

I'm sorry this took so long T.T
My PC died and deleted my progress.
Zaine Ayashi, Ultimate Escapist. Pretty tall, around 6'1. Fair skin, slight freckles on his nose. Messy pale blue hair, with pale grey eyes. He wears a white button up shirt with a black and acid green jacket with the sleeves rolled up. He has multiple scars on his arms from getting free from barbed wires, and actually has a chain wrapped around his right wrist as a memento from one of the places he's escaped from. He has ripped jeans and combat boots with the laces untied. For a bit more detail: - His jacket's design is mainly black, but there's acid green accents, like.... On the back of his jacket, there's a gas-mask design, with a circle around it. - Despite the chains around his arm and belt being there for a long time, as he claims, they're shiny and almost looking new. He seems to take good care of them. - If you want a reference for Zaine's bangs, look at SDRA2 Yuki's. I call them side bangs, but I don't know the proper name for them
Shipping: I ship him with Ayame, and I honestly adore this ship. I think his flirtatious and playful personality can go really well with her stoic and mature one. Plus, I tried to make their colors contrasting a bit, Ayame wearing white and red, Zaine wearing black and green. Plus he has much lighter hair, while hers is midnight black. I often call their ship Zayame, or Hayashi. I hope this is enough info!! ^^

Hope this isn’t too bad on accuracy 😭
(The final is with Ayame, this is just to see my accuracy)

#REAL_WORLD OGAWA CHIYORI ✦ twenty five ✦ social media coordinator
given name chiyori family name ogawa d.o.b. 1998/03/03 (25) pronouns she/her ethnicity japanese sexuality closeted bisexual ?? occupation social media coordinator at an entertainment company; primarily works with two idol groups
height 164 cm hair brown eyes brown face miyawaki sakura distinguishing features both ears pierced, said to have large ears, signature scent is cherry blossoms
personality
positive | empathetic, observant, discreet
neutral | escapist, competitive
negative |  fickle, headstrong, vindictive
history
born in hakodate and lived their with her family (mom, dad, older brother) until she was thirteen. her parents divorced at that time, and she chose to move to south korea with her mother and older brother.
struggled in school because of the language barrier; her korean was not as strong as she would have liked it to be, and she still struggles to consider herself fluent. her accent is nowhere near as pronounced as it once was, though she's fairly self-conscious over it.
had trouble making friends; spent a lot of her free time finding creative ways to get out of having to study. mostly, that involved hiding out at a pc bang and playing games. at one point, she started skipping classes to spend time protecting her rank in-game. had to be dragged home by her brother. mortifying.
her mother considered sending her to japan to live with her father, something she emphatically did not want, so pulled herself together long enough to graduate from high school and get into university (communications major). muddled through classes for the most part, vacillating between interest and complete disassociation.
discovered synk in her final year and quickly became obsessed. the game was—is—like catnip to her, and it took an intervention by her brother for her to set it aside long enough to finish her degree (but also, you know, she didn't, just was better at hiding it).
graduated, got a job somehow, got a cat, rented a tiny box apartment a lengthy commute away from her office building—the standard early twenties experience.
she's better at juggling a game/life balance than she was as a teenager—she has a job, is financially stable, embraces mild chaos in her everyday life but it's chill. still synk-ing, plays almost daily as a way to unwind after work.
games have always been easier, more comfortable than real life for her. now is no different.
miscellanous
has a persian cat named yuzu. he tolerates her at best. my cat is a rockstar & i'm a manager except, like, it's so real.
survives almost entirely on a diet of coffee, ramen, and energy drinks (when she can’t get her hands on coffee). she does know how to cook, but hates doing it if she's the only person eating.
her brother often stops by her apartment to make sure she's alive doing okay. finds his concern smothering, to be honest, but they're close! it's just how he is!
has been trying to live an active and healthy lifestyle, but she can never keep to a workout routine for more than a week because she’s weak and lazy. best she can manage is the occasional bicycle ride along the han river.
aside from gaming, she enjoys watching anime and photography. in addition to digital photography, she has an old film camera she likes to pull out sometimes for the art + develops her own film.
wanted connections
01 / was practically a cryptid in university in that you almost never saw her outside of classes because she was always at the pc bang... or in her room... but you somehow managed to befriend her anyway. maybe it's a chore to get her to attend any friend gatherings nowadays but she does it for you
02 / neighbors who keeps hearing strange sounds coming from her apartment and feels the need to check in on her to make sure she's not dying. she's really not. maybe just trying to work out or it's her cat being a demon. meet uglies but you become friends out of it
03 / never met each other irl but you've been besties in synk for years!! always enter verses together!! chiyori would die for you!! and after years of begging she's finally agreed to meet up face-to-face offline. surely this is will not go badly??
04 / get along really well in synk but unbeknownst to each other, you are enemies/nemeses irl and have been for years—or maybe one of you is very aware that your in-game bestie is the spawn of satan but you keep it on the dl because you like being friends in game. too bad your in game friend group is meeting up soon haha!! can't hide forever!
05 / you've dated in a bunch of verses mostly because your aes are always drawn together and you might want to take it a step further and date irl but she keeps dodging your attempts to ask in game and irl and it's not because she doesn't like you but dating is like... so much work, you know? why ruin a good thing?
GENERAL / looking for anything—friends, enemies, awkward acquaintances, exes, etc. in general she's like the person who'll drop out of contact for weeks because she's so absorbed in work/gaming. frequent refrain in her group chats is 'wow ur still here? thought u died'. friendships + relationships are hard to maintain... but if she likes you enough she'll try!!! maybe the great tragedy of her life is that she tries but it's never enough. idk hmu w/ anything (๑꧆◡꧆๑)
PERMANENT PLOT CALL / pls like this post if you'd like to plot for the real world verse and i'll pop into your dms to chat!

Hi! I made an oppsie with my previous ask!
My rep emoji is 👩🏽‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏼, and I’m TM, my fave planet it Uranus.
I’d like to choose question 🩸, and I’d like to know what my queer ancestors think of me/if they have any messages for me.
Your exchange :
Your queer ancestors thoughts of you : 8W, KW rx, QP rx
They think you’re quite a busy person, you could like to manifest a lot too??. They also think you should work on your self esteem, avoid being too forceful towards yourself and others.
Messages from them : World rx, PC rx, KP rx, 7S rx
Seems like they want to warn you or make you wary of those around you. Seems like you either have a partner, or you’re seeing someone and something about their behavior and intentions will be revealed soon.
Hello
Thank you for the messages 🙏🏼
Your cards : six of swords , nine of swords , the world
Chanelled Messages:
Did you even have queer ancestors? At first they didn't understand what is the meaning of this because in their time they never really studied sexually is what they are saying ,so it took a lot of time for them to understand this and cherish this part of you , they want you to know that you are not alone and you shouldn't feel left out because if they were at your place they would be proud ofcourse confused at first but they would also trust that their ancestors are not cowards who would abondon their soul family if it didn't aligned with their values , seems like your ancestors are very wise , tbh I don't feel like they understand this but they also don't mind it , they expect you to teach them tbh they seem very interested about the concept of sexuality.
They also want you to be aware of your escapist tendencies .
Yeah that's all I got for you , I never really channeled this way , they could be water signs or just very connected with their intuition so they don't really operate out of ego , I didn't picked up on your queer ancestors because I don't think they were even aware of it or they disregarded this part of them , ps. Your ancestors are kind of tough , very wise so you should take their words seriously and understand its depth rather than question or change the narrative as to how it fits your value .
Is what they told me ✍🏼
Thank you for joining!!
