Rinne was pacing again. He knew it was a bad habit ever since the incident, but he couldn’t stop doing it. 

He didn’t want to, either. The footsteps gave him something to focus on, something to drown out the grief. They also worked to silence the world around him, which only worked to his detriment as HiMERU reached a hand out for his own. 

“Amagi,” he started. He always started like this. “Shiina wouldn’t want to see you like this.” 

“You think I don’t know that, Merumeru?” They had this conversation every week, almost every day. 

HiMERU sighs. A hologram starts up. Kohaku must have gotten it going again. 

“Hey, Rinne-kun, HiMERU-kun! A kiss before I go?” Niki’s tinny voice said from the speaker. Rinne took HiMERU’s hand in his and squeezed hard. 

“Yeah, Niki-kun,” he responded. It’s not what he said in that moment. The words were burned into his mind. I thought we agreed, no kissing til marriage! God he was so fucking stupid. 

Niki’s hologram leaned in to where Rinne was when the footage was recorded. He shifted his own body to allow Niki’s lips to meet his own. It had been his cheek that day. The hologram felt like static. 

Niki’s hologram leaned towards HiMERU and performed the same action and Rinne could see the grief on his own face. 

“Be safe, Niki.” He repeated, tears threatening to spill from his eyes. 

“Nahaha, I’m always careful Rinne-kun. HiMERU-kun, can you make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid while I’m gone?” 

“HiMERU thinks he should go with you, Shiina.” HiMERU’s hand clenched in Rinne’s. No matter how many times they change the conversation now, or how they offer to go with him and protect him, the recording would always end the same way. 

“You’re funny, HiMERU-kun. Anyway, I’ll be back soon. I love you. I’ll try and get Kohaku-chan a little something for his birthday too, so I might be a little later than usual.” 

Rinne and HiMERU repeated their silent I love yous to the hologram before it blinked out. 

Rinne doesn’t remember why they keep it around anymore. It's been six months now but being able to hear his voice again, even if it was that last conversation, the moment everything changed…

Rinne’s legs fold under him, bringing HiMERU with him. The two of them sit in silence, Rinne’s almost silent weeping and HiMERU’s hand rubbing comforting circles on his back. They’d get their revenge eventually.
