Hot, inhospitable, cruel….. Simply put, a place you’d only live in if you wanted to feel closer to hell.

Yet, there is nothing quite like it anywhere else on earth.

Such is the Danakil Depression, the hottest and weirdest place on planet earth.

Filled with ever-changing landscapes, lava, rocks, salt and sand, Dallol is simply one of the most amazing places on earth.

And also the hottest.

爾塔阿雷火山Erta Ale Volcano

懷抱著看冒著火紅熔岩泥漿的心情上山卻沒有達成願望，但還是可以看到過去那些竄流的泥漿地表，以及沿路的火山岩塊，想想當初火山噴發時的景象及涵蓋面積，一樣很驚人。

兩天一夜的火山行程大概是這樣的，四輪驅動吉普車從默克萊(Mekele)出發(如果是包含達納基窪地的三天兩夜行程，則可能是從達納基窪地開過來)，這需要將近一整天的車程，尤其是最後轉入火山區域的那段路，路況很差車子開不快。

日落之前抵達火山腳下的��地，在這裡休息準備晚餐等待天黑。駱駝會先把睡墊駝上山，而我們則是吃過晚飯後，再帶著頭燈往上爬約一個半小時到火山口。

抵達火山口的氣味不是太好，盡量要站在上風處。經過前幾年的一次噴發，熔岩漿已經下降，俯視的角度只看得到少許的火紅，但火山口冒出來的煙霧在鏡頭裡也是紅色的，只是沒有腳架也很難拍好照片。

晚上就在火山口不遠處就著睡墊露天睡覺，第二天早上日出之前再摸黑去火山口看看。

順便等待紅紅鹹蛋般的日出，然後有了日光也總算可以真正看到火山口的模樣和地貌。

然後趁著太陽還不強的時候趕快下山，回到山腳的營地吃早餐。

馱著我們睡墊的駱駝都好瘦。

用完早餐後還要開兩個小時左右的車離開火山區，然後繼續去附近的Afrera鹽湖泡泡鹽水和熱熱的溫泉。最後在湖邊的Afrera村落用過午餐後，還有三個多小時的山路回默克萊。

enterdanement One of the highlights of my year, so far: looking down the crater to check out a LAKE OF LAVA on the summit of the Erta Ale volcano 🌋 in NE Ethiopia. It only takes a couple of days to reach by jeep, through the one of the most inhospitable and hottest places on earth... The Danakil Depression. After dinner at basecamp, it's time for a three hour sweaty hike, in the dark, near the border of Eritrea (whom Ethiopia was at war with back in January). Not much time to admire the view, as we had to get back down before the scorching sun rose.
