The following contains spoilers from the May 6 NCIS: Hawai’i finale.
NCIS: Hawai’i on Monday night aired the Season 3 finale that it wrapped filming on a full three weeks before CBS announced that the island drama was cancelled and would not return in the fall.
How did the episode serve as a very unplanned series finale?
Picking up right where Part 1 of the finale left off last week, Part 2 opened with Sam at the hidden lab in Serbia, trying to bust his way through the steel door that stood between him and the ELITE team members who’d been exposed to the deadly Compound Z bioweapon by the duplicitous Dr. Annalisa Cruz.
Though Jane & Co. strongly advised Sam not to open the door, lest he expose himself and possibly others to the released gas, he was not about to let his team members down. But just as Sam managed to crack the door open, ELITE’s Jesse — with what would be his final breaths — slammed it right back closed, to spare their team leader.
Tumblr media
Sam, though, had not been fully spared; rather, as he attempted to chase after Dr. Cruz, it became evident, to us and him, that he’d been exposed to enough of Compound X to compromise his system. Sam slumped to the floor, in front of a morbidly pleased Dr. Cruz, just as Jane and Jesse arrived on the scene.
Gleaning that an easily fleeing Dr. Cruz must have crafted and administered to herself an antidote, Jane called in another favor from local asset Milos, to hook up Dr. Carla Chase with a state-of-the-art infectious disease lab, where she could best treat Sam. Milos came up with an abandoned kennel (and lots of sausage varieties to snack on), and Carla got to work.
Meanwhile, the team back in Hawaii learned that Annalisa Cruz once went by the name Tala Flores, and that she for a long time has rebelled against “U.S. imperialism” as part of a group called CLA. Ernie in turn got busy trying to determine the whereabouts of Annalisa’s CLA pals, by scouring their social media and mentions.
Tumblr media
Back in Serbia, Jesse braved the contaminated site of Cruz’s attack on the ELITE team to track down the rest of the antiserum… which was sloshing around inside a case full of shattered vials. After a brief scare courtesy of Serbian LEOs (which Kate and her always handy connections was able to ward off), Jesse delivered the antiserum to Carla. Carla was able to salvage barely one dose, but the sad truth, for Sam, is that with four canisters of Compound X still floating around out there, she needed to use that small sample to reverse-engineer great quantities of antiserum.
Tennant tracked down Dr. Cruz and got the upper hand on her after a brief skirmish. She then delivered her to Carla’s makeshift lab, where she was determined to extract the whereabouts of the remaining Compound X from their prisoner. Cruz scoffed at Tennant’s threats, until the Special Agent in Charge revealed that Annalisa’s kid sister had been tracked down and taken into NCIS custody.
When it appeared, via Jane’s laptop, that the sister was being tortured with a cattle prod, Cruz eventually divulged that CLA’s target is a Hawaii gathering of military leaders from the U.S. and Philippines. (We at home then learn that Lucy, Kate and a bit of real-time deep-fake tech had been used to fake the kid sister’s torture.)
Sam was given the antidote, and as he started to recover suggested to Jane that Cruz broke too easily. It was then deduced that the VIPs’ families are the true target, at a large, crowded event. The Hawaii team descended upon the venue, knowing that the four CLA members are milling around in disguise. Kai got the drop on one, who was about to release the gas into the air circulation system, only to have two others join in the fight. Kai masterfully took down all three goons, just before Kate and Swift arrived to, um, “help.”
Lucy meanwhile ID’d the fourth CLA member, and after their own brief skirmish, neutralized the final part of the bioweapon threat.
Back in Serbia, though, Dr. Cruz escaped her holding room and held Carla at scalpel-point. Jane engaged Cruz just long enough for a recovered Sam to end the standoff by putting a bullet in the baddie’s bean.
Tumblr media
Weeks later, back in Hawaii, Sam was fully recovered and ready to head back to Los Angeles — but not before Jane’s team surprisesdhim with a going away party, during which they toasted the fallen ELITE agents.
That night, Jane returned home, expecting to find daughter Julie waiting, hungry for a dinner Mom had no energy to make. Instead, sitting on the living room couch was… the evasive and elusive Maggie Shaw (returning guest star Julie White).
“No, Janey. Julie isn’t here,” said Maggie, seated in the dim room. “And you’re probably going to need a drink for what’s coming next….”

Another GOP tax scam.
Tumblr media
August 5, 2024
At a rally in Nevada this past June, convicted felon and rapist Donald Trump — in addition to pushing his usual litany of lies, bloviated self-praise and whiny grievances — floated a proposal to exempt tips from federal income taxes, something he promised to do "right away, first thing in office." Republicans, of course, were quick to embrace their god-emperor's whim, regardless of whether it made sense. Or was even feasible.
Part-time Texas senator and full-time Trump toady Ted Cruz immediately offered up the "No Tax On Tips Act." Which would affect 2.24 million wait staff across the country whose tips make up a large percentage of their income, according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates.
But like so many GOP schemes, this one is merely another con aimed at enriching the rich while not doing much, if anything, to help working people. For a start, it would provide precisely zero tax relief for the more than 95% of low- and moderate-wage workers who are not in tipped occupations. And the fine print of Cruz's bill reveals just how scammy it is, even for the ones it supposedly covers.
For example, under the proposed No Tax On Tips legislation, a single parent with one child, who earns $5,000 in wages and $19,000 in tips per year, would receive no tax cut at all. Nor would a married couple making $28,000, even if the whole amount was tips.
In fact, the bill does nothing at all for a lot of tipped workers. Economist Ernie Tedeschi of the Yale Budget Lab estimates that more than one-third of tipped employees actually don't pay any income taxes because their earnings are so low they're already exempt. These peons wouldn't benefit the tiniest iota from Trump's tip flim-flam.
On the other hand, nothing in Cruz's bill prevents high-income professionals, such as hedge fund managers and lawyers, from declaring their compensation as tips and obtaining a far heftier tax break than low-income workers. For instance, a married couple making $1 million in wages could get a tax cut of $180,000 by shifting half of those wages to tax-free tips.
Clearly, the Trump-inspired No Tax on Tips Act would provide no — or, at best, paltry — benefits to many tipped employees. Moreover, such a law would give these laborers tax cuts that are far less than they would receive if we simply restored the tax credits in President Biden's American Rescue Plan. But Republicans would never allow that. Not when their objective is to fleece the working class.

Chicago Fire Season 1 Ep. 9 "It Ain't Easy"
Tumblr media
Jose Vargas is forced to leave his job as a firefighter after his lungs are damaged in an auto machine shop fire. Chief Boden helps a teenage firebug. Severide receives an invitation from Renee, a woman he saved from a car crash. Cruz tries to save his brother Leon from the gang he is involved with. Casey and Severide try to stop Vargas.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline.
A fire started in a trash can near a building is raging through a machine stop. The scene is dangerous because it's full of cylinders and oxygen tanks. Otis spots Ernie, a young boy from the firehouse, watching the men a few feet away. The team works quickly to control the fire, but while Vargas and Severide try to break through the roof, a new batch of smoke makes Vargas cough. He's taken to the hospital.
Tumblr media
When Severide sees Ernie, he asks if he started the fire. Chief Boden stops him, but Severide won't listen. "Two fires, two dumpsters, same kid!" he yells at the Chief.
The next morning, the Chief says that Vargas inhaled magnesium shavings, which caused an infection and burned his lungs. He's out of the hospital, but not out of the water. The Chief warns Severide that if he speaks to him that way again, there'll be a price to pay. Severide self-medicates with painkillers.
Meanwhile, Shay asks Casey to help fix Dawson's kitchen window. Boden stops by Ernie's house to ask about the machine shop fire. Ernie is shaken but agrees to stop by the firehouse by 2 pm with his grandmother.
Tumblr media
The team deals with an elevator accident at a bank building. Casey finds an empty elevator with a safe box. The thief, Mark, is on a ledge. Casey gets him to safety. Outside, Cruz calls his brother Leon to bail him out of jail. Dawson makes plans to cook Casey dinner.
At the firehouse, everyone welcomes back Vargas, who takes an inhaler four times a day but is otherwise fine. The Chief tells Casey and Severide that Vargas is on long-term disability. The CFD doctor says Vargas has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is a slow deterioration of the lungs and skeletal muscle dysfunction. He can't handle the job demands. In the locker room, Casey and Severide tell Vargas it's not all bad. He'll still be getting paid 75% of his salary. Casey asks Severide if he's checked his neck. Severide says it's his shoulder and he's fine.
Tumblr media
The squad is called to a small car accident involving a power line, where Severide saves an attractive woman. Meanwhile, Cruz bails his troubled brother out of jail. Cruz wants Leon to move in with him.
At the firehouse, Mills flirts with Dawson, and it doesn't go unnoticed by Shay. As the clock nears 2 pm, Herrmann and the Chief wait for Ernie. Herrmann says the Chief is doing Ernie a favor by waiting for him to do the right thing. The issues don't fix themselves.
Renee Royce, the woman from the car accident, arrives at the firehouse with a box of chocolates for Severide and asks him out for coffee. Severide says it's a well-known phenomenon that people who are rescued become attracted to the men who help them.
In the locker room, as Mills watches Vargas pack up, Vargas offers some essential advice: when an opportunity comes, grab it. As Vargas leaves, the firehouse gives him his firefighter hat and hugs him goodbye. Later, the Chief hands Ernie's files over to the head of the department.
Tumblr media
At a convenience store, Cruz tells Flaco, a gang leader, that he wants Leon out. Flaco wants $10,000, but Cruz refuses. Flaco agrees to let Leon go.
At the firehouse, Casey and Dawson flirt while picking out a window. As they pass each other in the hallway, Shay accuses Severide of still taking painkillers. He tells her to stay out of his business. Outside, Renee is waiting for him. She's not taking no for an answer and has made dinner reservations for tomorrow night. Severide is flattered and intrigued.
Vargas goes back to the firehouse, wanting to be with his friends. But something has changed. That night, the Chief arrives at another fire started by a dumpster. He finds Ernie and goes to investigate. He finds Ernie with someone he calls Uncle Ray. They run away before Boden can ask questions. Later, the Chief learns that "Uncle Ray" is Raymond Martin, an arsonist who served eight years in prison. Walking out of the firehouse, Severide notices that Vargas stayed the entire shift. He invites him on his date, and though he apologizes to Renee afterwards, she kisses him and tells Severide he's a good man.
Tumblr media
Cruz is smoking a cigar outside his home when an Escalade speeds down the street and throws Leon out, badly beaten. The gang doesn't like family members getting involved in their business.
At Dawson's, Casey has installed the window and they're sharing a few beers. As they get close to take a picture for Dawson's wall of fame, sparks fly and the two almost kiss, but Casey's phone rings. It's an emergency, and Casey runs out of the apartment.
Tumblr media
He arrives at the rooftop, where a bewildered Severide is trying to talk Vargas down from a ledge. Casey says that Firehouse 51 will always be made up of the men who walked through its doors, no matter where they are now. The firehouse will always be his home. Vargas makes his way off the ledge and collapses into their arms. Casey and Severide stare at one another, shocked by what they've just witnessed.

"The Substitute" (1996) is an action-thriller and cult classic directed by Robert Mandel and stars Tom Berenger and Ernie Hudson. By 1996, Hollywood established that films about white teachers coming to inner-city schools and turning things around were successful enough at the box office to continue to produce. For example, there was "The Principal" (1987), "Dangerous Minds" (1995), "Sunset Park" (1996), and "The Substitute." It was apparent enough that "High School High" was a spoof of those movies. Regardless, "The Substitute" stepped up the level and brought intense action to the inner-city high school theme. Additional cast members include William Forsythe, Marc Anthony, Glenn Plummer, Diane Venora, and Shar-Ron Corley. Inner-city high school-themed movies usually had primarily multicultural student populations. Mandel filmed "The Substitute" at Miami Sr. High School.
Director: Robert Mandel Writers: Roy Frumkes, Rocco Simonelli, Alan Ormsby
Starring Tom Berenger, Ernie Hudson, Marc Anthony, Glenn Plummer, Diane Venora, Shar-Ron Corley, William Forsythe, Raymond Cruz, William Forsythe, Luis Guzmán, Richard Brooks, Vincent Laresca, Maurice Compte, Beau Weaver, Cliff De Young, Willis Sparks, Noelle Beck, Jody Wilson, Jim Warne, Ian Marioles, María Celedonio, David Spates, David Hayes, Peggy Pope, Rodney A. Grant
Storyline Inner-city Miami schoolteacher Jane Hetzko (Diane Venora) gets her knee broken when she stands up to the gang leader, Juan Lacas (Marc Anthony). Her boyfriend, mercenary combat specialist Jonathan Shale (Tom Berenger), goes undercover as a substitute teacher to take down the gang but soon discovers that Lacas is merely an underling for the actual criminal mastermind.

Compound X is no joke, as an entire team learns by the end of the first part of the NCIS: Hawai’i series finale.
Sam’s (LL COOL J) read Jane (Vanessa Lachey) in about the Elite team when he had her interrogate the Chemist. Ernie (Jason Antoon) found out about it when Sam had him look at an encrypted laptop and he found that when Elite accessed it, their system had been compromised. And now, Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami) may or may not have dislocated one of the Elite agents’ shoulders when he tells her to get in a van; inside already are Jesse (Noah Mills) and Kai (Alex Tarrant). They’re taken, blindfolded, to Elite’s secret holding facility, where they’re told the Chemist was found murdered that morning.
Swift (Henry Ian Cusick) has been the one interrogating him, but fortunately, he’s fine, though they do confirm it was the tea they’d been drinking that killed the Chemist; he was severely immunocompromised due to the chemicals he’d handled over the years, so a health food supplement added to his tea over time was poison to him. (Whoever killed him knew he had a weak immune system and therefore knew him well.) One person connected to the secure facility is MIA; when Kai and Lucy head to his place, they find his “college friend” “Barry” there … and he throws a knife at them and jumps out the window. He’s with the Bratva, but why would the Russian mob try to break him out of prison only to then kill him? Did they not want anyone else to use him? Whatever the case, it’s bad news because he’s the only one who can help them stop this mysterious Compound X, which is nearly incurable.
After IDing Barry and tracing his movements on the island, the agents discover he and four others from the Russian mob arrived 10 days ago. Both Jane and Sam’s teams hit where they’re staying and take out the five men—and find a hostage. Dr. Annalisa Cruz, who has a PhD in organic chemistry, was the Chemist’s assistant, and though she claims she didn’t know what he was doing at first, the very stressed and sleep-deprived Swift keeps pushing her, to the point that Jane has to intervene and pull him out of the room. But Cruz was the one to tell the Russians about the Chemist’s immune system.
Ernie gets into the laptop the Russians had and finds the full catalog of Elite’s interrogations of the Chemist—they knew he was talking—as well as research notes about Compound X. Cruz confirms that X tricks the immune system into attacking itself; it’s odorless, tasteless, airborne, and a small amount released in enclosed space can kill thousands in minutes. Rewatching Swift’s interrogations of the Chemist as well as tracing his movements do get the team a location: Belgrade.
Sam and the Elite team, as well as Jane, Jesse, Chase (Seana Kofoed), and Cruz head to Belgrade; Cruz can help contain the compound. There are multiple possible locations for the fourth lab where the compound is, however, but it turns out to be a not totally bad thing that Jane’s contact confirms to Federov, the Godfather of the Bratva, that she and the others are there. Jane walks into the restaurant where the Godfather is and, through their conversation, learns he wasn’t responsible for the Chemist’s murder (it’s not good business to kill a profit maker); did have the Chemist make X but wanted nothing to do with it after (he’s a businessman, and you can’t do business with the dead); and the location of the fourth lab (in exchange for Jane owing him a personal favor).
Sam leads the Elite team and Cruz into the lab, and Cruz secures the canisters in a case (Chase is on the plane waiting to secure them for travel)…. but that’s when things take a turn. The Bratva’s Godfather reveals that Cruz was already in Hawai’i and had been for weeks, whereas they thought she’d been kidnapped and brought there. And then Cruz, after Sam leaves her and the others to check the exit out, drops a canister and puts on her gas mask. The rest of the Elite team isn’t so lucky, and Sam, having been warned by Jane and locked outside the room, can only watch as the three die…

Jemima alternating between protector and protected in the Macavity fight..!
In the first two, just as he's been revealed, she keeps venturing out from the shelter of Munkustrap's legs to lash at Macavity, then shrinking back.
In the two central gifs, Demeter and some of the other queens have been hypnotised, so Jemima crawls past Demeter's legs and tries to attack Macavity - only to be hypnotised herself! Munkustrap immediately draws Macavity's attention to himself, while Skimbleshanks pulls her back to safety.
In the last two gifs, we have (first) Munkustrap protecting her (before he starts to fight, of course), then her joining Skimbleshanks and Cassandra in their aggressive posturing toward Macavity.
Mexico 2018: probably Wendy Braga as Jemima, Marco Salazar as Munkustrap, Erny Cruz as Macavity, and Axel Alcántara as Skimbleshanks.
