Character Idea: defense attorney whose gimmick is similar to Psyche Locks except instead of figuring out what they’re lying about with logic, you just have to figure out which insults would be the most hurtful to that particular person until they break down and cry. Her name is Eris Charge

As dumb as it sounds I think the only really redeemable part of the last arc was the lead-up and execution of bakugo's death. I think the anime version of the scene does an even better job in terms of the emotional and atmospheric framing here.
I just wish it would have meant anything beyond impromptu man-thread based heart surgery
I never saw the actual lead up and execution of Bakugou’s death, so I won’t render any opinion on its execution (though I’m very glad to hear that they did it well) but I 100% agree with the impromptu man-thread based heart surgery part.
The impromptu man-thread based heart surgery constitutes most of what I know about Bakugou’s death, and it’s just so fucking stupid that it ruins any suspension of disbelief. We have a sweaty, grime covered man with no surgical experience stitching up Bakugou’s heart with his own fucking body. 1) there is no way that he figured out how to do heart surgery on the spot while he’s inside of a boy and just generally stabbing around instead of being able to see from above where he’s fucking going 2) Bakugou is going to go into fucking heart failure before sundown because instead of getting heart surgery in a sterile environment he got it in an active battlefield setting with the needle and thread being aforementioned sweaty, grime covered adult man. He is 1000% getting an infection so aggressive that it ends up in medical studies even if his body doesn’t reject the adult man now inside of him and 3) that’s the kind of injury that you should not be able to get up and fight from unless you have an actual healing quirk handling it. They needed to have something other than man-thread heart surgery be the solution here.
Bnha as a narrative has a serious problem with having an emotionally heavy moment with consequences and immediately fucking undoing it. Like Mirio losing his Quirk, only to get it back like ten minutes later. It cheapens the writing because there’s no reliable sense of consequences. You care less when something happens because you know it’s going to be immediately undone.
#I’m not saying Bakugou should have stayed dead but for him to immediately get impromptu amateur battlefield heart surgery and then get up#and have no real consequences to it past some dramatic blood coughing is bullshit#yeah he just got battlefield amateur heart surgery but he’ll still have all for one himself running scared#again I don’t know how bakguous death actually went#frankly I don’t know much about why or how he died#I’m really glad to hear it was apparently done well#and I’m not gonna cast any of my own judgment on how it was done because I never saw it#but Horikoshi just keeps setting up these emotionally charged sacrificial moments that are great and GUTTING THEM#mirio losing his quirk because he took the bullet for Eri is hollow because they almost immediately undid it#Bakugou’s death ends up overshadowed by how goddamn stupid his resurrection is#and all for one as an antagonist is cheapened because he’s the kind of idiot who will willingly inject himself with ‘turns you into a baby#and makes you disappear’ drug KNOWING THAT IT DOES THAT and then end up running pathetic and scared from teenage boy who just received#amateur battlefield heart surgery and objective should fall over and die if so much as moves the wrong way

Why lie? (Part VIII to Why me?)
azriel x rhys' sister! reader
angst/eventual comfort ( angst angst confessions and more angst!! Don't mind me rubbing my hands together and cackling maniacally in the corner)
Summary: When you walk in on Azriel and Elain the mating bond snaps leading you to flee to Autumn with Eris so you can be free of Azriel. Your absence causes Azriel to come to some drastic realisations, but is it already too late and has your time in Autumn led to you moving on?
Parts I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII if you missed them!
-
Your mother had once told you that the longer you ignore a problem and let your emotions brew, the thicker your anger becomes. You do appreciate the sentiment of dealing with your problems head on and you kept that in mind as you downed your 6th? Maybe 7th? Goblet of wine.
Right now you didn't want to deal with your emotions or the emotionally charged state that Azriel's presence had left you in so you did the next best thing and had gotten drunk.
Laughing unboundedly, you spin Nesta around on the dance floor. The music played, an accompaniment to the sound of the Night Court revelry. It had been a few hours since you had arrived and after your reunion with the court, you had been drinking and dancing for the rest of the Night.
The lively music which had been playing began to transition into a slow dance. The last dance of the evening, according to the conductor of the mini-orchestra that your brother had hired. Cassian marched up to you guys and held his hand out, an unspoken invitation for his mate. She nodded to you, half in apology and half in thanks, and was whisked away by the Illyrian warrior.
You sighed, unable to tell if you were dizzy from the spinning or from all the drinks you'd had throughout the night. Azriel was usually your dance partner at the end of the night. While everyone would pair off with their mate, it had become an unspoken promise that you guys would save the last dance for each other. He would whisper bits of information he learned throughout the ball, and you would try to not look shocked at some of the things that he's learned. It would give you both a moment of respite from your roles and actually let you enjoy yourselves at the ball.
You did see Azriel leaning against a pillar in all his glory, blade on his hip and cat-like hazel eyes scanning the room accompanying his blue siphons and wind-tousled hair. He looked like a dream. One that you've had many times over the years where the spymaster saves you from irreparable danger and confesses his undying love. It was a dream that had started in your adolescence, and now you saw why it needed to stay there.
Your mate. The one you were supposed to be destined to be with. The one you had to watch be in love with another member of your family. Twice. Your traitorous heart skipped a beat or two.
You put in too much work and had gone through too much pain to still be hung up over him. A single dance wouldn't change anything. You turn around giving your back to the shadowsinger and see Eris directly in front of you.
He doesn't even give you a chance to question him as he grabs your hand with one hand and your waist with the other and whisks you away into a Waltz.
-
You're sitting at your vanity for the first time in months. After your dance with Eris, the ball had ended and everyone had gone home. Your room is different from how you remembered it, the emptiness of your objects was something you were expecting, but all your things had appeared to be slightly shifted which had thrown you off.
There was also another scent that seemed to underly all your things that you were choosing to ignore, thinking about for peace of mind.
You were freshly showered and in your nightgown. Your room was dimly lit, with the only source of light being a few candles that were flickering in the dark.
You were brushing your hair when there was a knock at the door. "Come in." You looked in your mirror to see who entered. Your hand stopped mid-brush as your eyes met Azriel's hazel ones through the mirror.
He opened the door and began to enter the room timidly, like a child approaching a cat scared that they were going to scare it away.
His voice is soft and careful, "I didn't see you after the ball." No questions about why you blew up at him or what you meant to say before you were cut off.
You take a breath. You really didn't want to see him tonight, you thought that you had time before you had to speak with him again, but it seems like Azriel's will is stronger than your avoidance.
"I left right as it was over. I had to help Eris and Lucien settle in." The tension in the room was palpable. Your words had been polite, but there was a bite in them. You never leave without Azriel. He was only a few feet away, but distance between you two was greater than it has ever been.
"You have been spending a lot of time with them lately. Especially Eris." His words were bitter, like poison, the kind that he wished he could have slipped into Eris' drink when he saw you and him dancing together.
"Well, I'm sorry if I wanted to be hospitable to official guests of the Night Court during their stay here. Especially when they treated me so well in Autumn." Your anger immediately flared up. How dare he question you in this way.
"Well, what I was seeing seemed a lot more than hospitality." Azriel knew he messed up the second the words were out. He had gotten a better handle on his emotions since the mating bond snapped, but seeing you with Eris dancing and laughing all evening was something that he wasn't prepared for when it was him who you were supposed to be dancing with.
Seeing his mate in the arms of another opened up the floodgates of emotions that he wasn't prepared to deal with.
You put your hairbrush down. "You are seriously putting my integrity into question? Also what I do with whom is none of your business shadowsinger."
You turn around to face him, a million emotions burning in your eyes, "Besides, why do you care when you are already pursuing a relationship with one of their mates?" He flinched at the last word that left your tongue.
His wings dropped and there was a look in his eyes that you couldn't quite place. Fear? Shock? You had never spoken to him like this. He didn't know what to do or how to react.
You started at each other in the silence until he decided to break it.
"Why did you never tell me you were upset with me? You're telling me I can't fault you when you left without saying a word?" He asks almost pleadingly.
"I had to sit here and watch you talk to everyone else in our family, knowing that I had somehow wronged you without knowing what it was that I even did." He broke eye contact, took a breath and resumed.
You were shocked you had no idea where this was coming from or that he was this aware of your actions in the first place.
"You can't say it wasn't me because I know you and every sign points to me being the reason you left. You leave without telling me and then come back and ignore me. You're acting all buddy buddy with enemies of the Night Court and refuse to talk to me." You look away from him, it's your turn to avoid eye contact now.
He doesn't accept this and walks up to and gets on a knee. He's so tall that kneeling, he is almost eye level to you sitting. He tilts your chin up to meet his gaze.
"What happened to us?" He is almost pleading with you. Longing in his gaze, but longing for what? Longing for the attention he's been accustomed to that you won't give him anymore?
You're exhausted you can't even pretend that nothing is wrong anymore. You meet his eyes, resolution written across your features.
"You have a family that loves you Azriel. You have Rhys, you have Cass, and you have me. You were going to throw all of that away for a Blood Duel with Lucien Vanserra over Elain."
Panic flashes across his features. "That was in the past I've changed-" He tries to reassure you with everything he has in himself that it was in his past. He's changed. Why would he want that when his mate was right in front of him?
"You were ready to die, Azriel, and I understand that you think your life is worthless and I wish I could go into your head and change the way you think and I wish I could go back in time and cut down anyone who has ever wronged you and make sure that your father suffers tenfold, but you were going to leave behind everyone that loves you for a woman with a mate." Tears well up in your eyes and you take a breath.
You are really trying to hold it together, but you don't care anymore about hiding anything from him. There was a crack in the dam and everything came spilling out.
"I know you saw the blade I was going to gift you for Christmas. It wards off a singular death blow and I spent so long calling in favours and having it crafted for you because I know that with your loyalty and selflessness, you would one day meet your end in the name of someone you loved."
Azriel's resolve is cracking and you can see his eyes beginning to glisten in the candlelight. His shadows left him, giving you guys privacy for this tense moment except for the singular shadow that has been sitting on your wrist for months.
"I would have given you the blade for the duel, but that would've been the end of our relationship as you knew it."
More tears spill and you don't even try to fight them. "I dealt with you prioritising Elain over me and I have dealt with your questionable decisions when it comes to women for hundreds of years, but to kill Lucien for wanting to fight for his mate or killing yourself because you think you're unworthy of everything in this life is something I couldn't deal with. Not when I have spent my entire life being there for you and fighting for you."
You were full on crying and Azriel was fighting tears. You can could the number of times on your hands that you had ever seen Azriel cry.
His hands move from your face to your hands and he hands his head in shame.
"I couldn't- I can't" You hiccup.
He pulls you into his chest, you want to fight him, but you are full-on sobbing and no matter how mad you are at him he is a comfort that you struggle to resist, especially in your emotionally exhausted state.
"You can't expect me to just sit there and watch that and pretend like I'm not upset." Your words are muffled in his chest.
He's stroking your hair with one hand and holding you close with another. "I was very unhappy. I thought something was missing and the answer to the emptiness within myself was Elain. It seemed too perfect, three brothers for three sisters and I told myself that. I convinced myself that I would never be truly happy until I had what my brothers had."
Azriel takes a breath. He's not used to spilling his emotions out for anyone to hear them, he's been working on it, but this sort of thing was new for him.
"I thought our bond was solid and you said you didn't mind me spending time with Elain, so that's what I focused on. The emptiness had never gone away and I convinced myself that the Blood Duel would fix my problem one way or another."
You pulled back from his chest and he made sure you were looking him in the eye as he said this because he knows he would never be able to say it again.
"I'm so sorry for everything. I have never had anyone care about me the way that you do and I became so used to it that I started to think it was a right, that I was entitled to your care."
He blinks away tears and looks to the side, pausing momentarily as if he's trying to find the words.
"I have never been more miserable than in the time that you were gone. Not hearing from you is the worst punishment the Mother has ever bestowed me with and I would rather give the wings off my back than to sentence myself to that treacherous fate. I'm sorry I was so careless before."
He takes your hand and puts it over his heart. "I swear to the Mother or whatever gods that will listen that should I forsake you ever again in either this life or the next, that may they take pity on my wayward soul and sentence me to a fate worse than death for all eternity."
You feel his heart racing under your palm and you feel the breath that he takes. "The only terrible fate that I can imagine of that magnitude is being away from you. Is never being around you or seeing your smile or hearing you laugh because if there was one person that I would ever want to be stuck with for all eternity it would be you."
His eyes bear into your soul with an intensity you had never seen from the shadowsinger. He is very good at his job, but has never been one to deal with his personal problems head on.
You feel the mating bond in your chest. It has been snuffed out for a while, a result of you ignoring it, but now you felt it stirring, almost fighting for its survival.
"You don't have to forgive me right now or even a hundred years from now. But I need you to know that I am sorry for everything and I will fight to earn your trust again and be worthy of you."
His eyes flashed with a determination you had never seen directed at you from the shadowsinger and you had no idea how to react.
You just nodded your head. "Thank you Azriel."
-
Azriel has never had to pour his heart out like this. He never realised how hurt you were from his actions and it certainly didn't help that he could feel your emotions through the bond.
He brings you in again in an all-consuming hug and feels pain, so much agony that must have been building up for years and years. He brings you in to an all encompassing embrace and begins to cry into your shoulder. "I'm so sorry."
He cries out and means it. He can feel the wetness on his shirt from your tears while he mars your nightgown with his own. He sits there and holds you as he falls apart and you let him, never seeing him in this state before.
He feels your pain and his own and the world feels like it's ending, but the contrast of the comforting warmth of your hold keeps him together.
At one point he noticed that your breathing had evened out. You had fallen asleep. He carries you over to your bed and lies you down. He sits next to you a moment taking in your features.
Your brow is furrowed and your jaw is clenched, for a moment he's scared that his anxieties and anguish are bleeding onto your side of the bond, but since it hasn't snapped for you yet he shakes the thought off.
At the sight of you sleeping, his shadows come back and encompass your resting form. They surround you, checking your sleeping form for danger and settle around your outline in the bed.
Azriel begins to feel the exhaustion of the past day settle into his bones. The mating bond snapping. His fight with Rhys. Watching you dance with Eris at the ball. Fighting with you. Spilling his feelings out. It had all been so much both physically and emotionally.
He was about to make the move to get up when you started mumbling in your sleep. He turned back to you and you turned in your sleep towards him.
Azriel watched you for a moment longer and unknowingly, in your sleep you had grabbed his arm. Azriel didn't know what to do because he should get up, but you were here holding onto him.
He brushed your arm off and had begun to walk away when you had started tossing and turning. He told himself that this was for your benefit, that you needed a good night's sleep and that he would be gone before you even woke up.
Bringing over one of the chair's right next to your bed, he sits himself down next to you. He leaves his arm on the bed and you immediately roll over and press your check into his hand, holding onto his arm. He lets himself revel in the touch because he knows it's the only one he is going to get from you.
Your tossing, turning, and mumbling stopped and he heard your breathing and heartbeat even out, as you were taken into a deep sleep. The sight of your peaceful slumber had started to make Azriel sleepy.
He leaned back in his chair and even though it was not the most comfortable position he had ever been in, he felt himself being dragging into the lull of sleep. Azriel has never had much luck with sleep, it was something he fought against every night waking up multiple times and struggling to stay asleep. Even though he was in a chair, your presence was comforting enough to allow him the luxury of a restful night of sleep. As the last bits of his consciousness were slipping away, Azriel focused on the warmth of your hand and thanked the Mother and swore that he would make it right if it was the only thing he would do for the rest of his days.
-
The Mother looked at Fate. He scoffed at her, "So dramatic this whole mating bond business is. If they're meant to be together then why isn't she just accepting him already?"
Fate had never been particularly patient. He believes that the time for everything was now because putting off your fate is an impossible feat.
The Mother believes in divine timing. Everything will occur when it is meant to. The Mother and Fate have been going back on forth on this issue for years.
She looks at him, amused by his eagerness, "Because it's time for him to show her that he can fight for her and himself. That's the important part, he's just realising now the error of his ways at least give him some time to prove it."
The Mother moves her chess piece into an advantageous move. Fate looks pensive.
She teases him, "Don't tell me you're actually getting attached to these ones."
He smiles, a wicked sight filled with smugness and a sureness that he did not always have. "They remind me of us in the beginning. I am beginning to become quite fond of them."
He's about to counter her attack when he pauses for a second. "But I like to think I didn't look that pathetic."
The Mother offers an immediate retort as he moves his piece. "You're right. You were more pathetic." She moves her piece.
"Hey now-"
Fate has always been cruel and unyielding, but the Mother had softened him over the years, a realisation he begins to acknowledge when he realises that he does want these two to end up together and curses himself for being a part of the reason it's been dragged out so long. He can almost hear his sister Karma laughing somewhere in the distance.

note: I honestly really struggled with this part. The conversation was something I really wanted to get right and while it's not a complete resolution, them actually beginning to get their emotions out is a good thing and progress in their relationship. I hope you guys are enjoying this story and as always thank you darlings and until next time!
note note: There were some troubles with the taglist that I hopefully fixed in this part and as always this will be edited eventually!! Hopefully...

You know, I think this ending would have been slightly less of a fucking disappointment if the heroes hadn't been so unfairly favored by Horikoshi compared to the villains. I mean, seriously
Deku destroys every bone in his body multiple times throughout the story and is warned that if he continues, he'll permanently lose the use of his limbs ? Everything's fine, his body's just got used to being reduced to a bloody pulp somehow so there's no consequences for him. In fact even when he literally loses his arms to Shigaraki, he gets them back two minutes later thanks to Eri because guess what ? Her horn still works even when cut off from her body. How convenient.
Gran Torino gets his ribcage obliterated by Shigaraki ? Don't worry guys, he'll survive that despite his old age and injuries, and this to have no particular role in the plot afterwards.
Bakugo dies heroically trying to buy time before Deku arrives ? Lmao, did you really believe it ?? No of course not, Edgeshot just uses his last-minute Deus Ex Machina to save his life at the cost of his own and- Oops nope he's fine too, my bad !
Hawks murders a criminal fleeing for his life in cold-blood ? The best Hori has to offer is him completely free and in charge of the HSPC.
And no, losing his quirk isn't a real consequence for him because not only it literally played a major part in saving the world with Vestige!Hawks raising an insurrection among AFO's quirks, but also because his quirk has always been the element through which people exploited him.
Endeavor abused his family for years and completely destroyed his eldest son ? No jail time and no media backlash for that, the only blame he received was due to the heroes' failure to stop the League during the Raid Arc.
And don't even get me started on this bs about facing hell or whatever for what he's done : He's literally free and wealthy ; he has Rei, Fuyumi, Shoto, his sidekicks and Hawks on his side ; and all the difficulties he's apparently going to suffer are off-screened.
Deku had to sacrifice OFA and his future hero career to save the world ? Guess what, Bakugo invested all his time and money to make him an Iron-Man suit and now he can still be a hero with everyone else.
There are plenty more examples of this but I think you get the idea. Now let's take a look at the villains' ending :

Toya is now a piece of charcoal kept artificially alive for the few years he has left, unable to move a finger, and whose few minutes a day during which he can stay awake will be spent talking to his father who abused him as a child.
Toga, a literal teenager, killed herself to save Ochako and because she knew it's still better than rotting at Tartarus her whole life.
And not only did she die but she did by bleding to death. Let me repeat for those who have trouble grasping what I've just said : In a manga where the heroes can survive having their heart blown to bits, being impaled Kakyoin-style or smashed against buildings like a fly on a windshield, one of the main antagonists died of a fucking hemorrhage…
As for Shigaraki, after learning that his very birth and all the tragedies of his life have been orchestrated by AFO, after all this development and narrative promises about him being saved in the end... Deku just kills him.
Because despite all his speeches about saving him, it seems like the best our MC could do was beating him both physically and mentally until he crumbles to dust…
Compress on his side is apparently locked up for life and kept alive by machines too.
A begging Kurogiri tried in a desperate attempt to save Shigaraki, only to be unceremoniously blown up by Bakugo and dying off-screen without anyone giving a shit, including Aizawa and Mic.
And Spinner will now spend the rest of his life struggling with the extra quirks inside him that affect his body and mind, while having to cope with the thought that his boyfriend best friend and companions have either died alone or are locked away for life in horrifying circumstances.
Clearly not the same as with the heroes...
Now don't get me wrong, even if they suffered just as much from the consequences of their actions or the plot as the League, this ending would still be a disaster in terms of writing but AT LEAST it wouldn't reek that much of hypocrisy.

#kaminari is good with kids i just know it#got this idea while listening to the Mary Poppins classic Spoonful of Sugar#he turns it into a game and she forgets its a chore#at one point he turns it into a race#“if you can clean your side of the room faster than i can clean my side ill get you icecream!”#she excitedly starts cleaning the room and once shes super focused he stops cleaning his side#he was gonna give her ice cream anyway#when she finishes her side he goes “great job! now help me finish my side and we can get some icecream!” and they both work on that side#hes a tricky guy#he may not do great in school but hes still VERY clever#then when theyre done he goes “Okay! scary? my god, you’re divine.
-
in this day and age, quirks were anything but uncommon. each person posessed a unique ability that would allow them to enhance their physical prowess, and although many pro heroes were powerful women, there weren’t many with powerful quirks.
you however, you were the exception. a product of dr. garaki, an experiment that he’d toyed with before he ultimately joined all for one, leaving your family behind in the process.
he’d used shigaraki as his blueprint when creating you, since all for one had been a side job at that point. he’d utilized the embers gathered from shigaraki & implanted them into your body, trying to see what your quirk would manifest as once you were old enough.
in that sense, you and shigaraki tomura were the same. your quirk was the ability to destroy anything, aside from liquids, so long as your five fingers laid on it. it was essentially a carbon copy of decay, the only difference is that you were the wielder.
so when bakugou had seen you charge at shigaraki, hand spread out and ready to attack, his eyes shined with something he’d never felt before as his stomach churned slightly.
he’d remembered the time you’d spent in the common room with each other, either reading or scrolling on your separate phones in silence.
he’d remembered how you were careful to never fully rest your hand on anything. how your hand would always ghost over eri’s shoulder, not touching it out of fear that you’d harm the girl. even during physical combat, you’d never utilize your hands because you didn’t want to hurt your opponent.
after the war ended, you’d both been out a lot. with each other. and when he reached for your hand, you quickly yanked it away, afraid.
“stop. i don’t wanna hurt you.” you mumbled, your hands falling at your sides.
he grabbed your hand again, this time his grip strong, he intertwined three of his fingers with three of your own, your other two unused fingers resting at your side comfortably, the cool breeze causing them to move ever so slightly.
“i’m not scared, dumbass. i know you don’t wanna hurt me.”
and all you could do was smile at the boy. the first boy who hadn’t been scared of you or your ability.

THANATOS: AN INFODUMP
Thanatos (Θανατος) known to the romans as Mors is the god or daimon (personified spirit) of non-violent death. He is a chthonic deity residing in the underworld.

This post covers his family, symbols, notable myths, epithets, orphic hymn, and my favourite passages about him.
PARENTAGE AND SIBLINGS
His parentage and family can be understood through Hesiod’s Theogony (A Greek epic written in the 8th or 7th B.C)
And Nyx (Night) bare hateful Moros (Doom) and black Ker (Violent Death) and Thanatos (Death), and she bare Hypnos (Sleep) and the tribe of Oneiroi (Dreams). And again the goddess murky Nyx, though she lay with none, bare Momos (Blame) and painful Oizys (Misery), and the Hesperides . . . Also she bare the Moirai (Moirae, Fates) and the ruthless avenging Keres (Death-Fates) . . . Also deadly Nyx bare Nemesis (Envy) to afflict mortal men, and after her, Apate (Deceit) and Philotes (Friendship) and hateful Geras (Old Age) and hard-hearted Eris (Strife).
— Parents: Nyx with no father (Roman versions of his birth name Erebus the father)
— Siblings:
Apate (deceit)
Eris (strife)
Geras (old age)
Hesperides (nymphs of the evening)
Hypnos (sleep) Ker (violent death)
Keres (death-fates)
Moirai (fates)
Momos (blame)
Moros (doom)
Nemesis (retribution)
Oizys (misery)
Oneiroi (dreams)
Philotes (friendship)
SYMBOLS AND APPEARANCE
SYMBOLS
— inverted torch → represents a life being extinguished
— butterfly → symbolises the soul
— sword → indicates his authority to sever the thread of life
— poppies → as a symbol of eternal sleep
— wreath → suggesting eternity, or the cyclical nature of life and death
APPEARANCE
Greek vase paintings depicted him as a winged, older man with a beard and rarely as a young, beardless youth.
Roman sculptures portrayed him as a youth holding an inverted torch and a wreath or butterfly
NOTABLE MYTHS
— THANATOS AND THE BODY OF SARPEDON
As seen in the Iliad, Thanatos and Hypnos are tasked to carry the body of Sarpedon away from the battlefield to Lycia so his brothers and countrymen can give him a respectful burial.
Homer, Iliad 16. 453 ff (trans. Lattimore) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) : "[Hera speaks to Zeus about the approaching death of his son Sarpedon :] ‘But after the soul and the years of his life have left him [Sarpedon], then send Thanatos (Death) to carry him away, and Hypnos (Sleep), who is painless, until they come with him to the countryside of broad Lykia (Lycia) where his brothers and countrymen shall give him due burial with tomb and gravestone.’"
Homer, Iliad 16. 681 ff : "Then [Apollon] gave him [Sarpedon] into the charge of swift messengers to carry him, of Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), who are twin brothers, and these two presently laid him down within the rich countryside of broad Lykia (Lycia)."
— THE CAPTURE OF THANATOS BY SISYPHUS
Sisyphus was the (possibly) founder and king of Corinth and was known as ‘the craftiest on men’ in texts by Homer. In the myth, Thanatos was sent to carry Sisyphus into the underworld. Upon Thanatos’ arrival, Sisyphus who was hiding chained him and in doing do, suspended death across the entire world. Thanatos was later freed by Ares who had noticed an absence of death from the battlefield
Alcaeus, Fragment 38a (trans. Campbell, Vol. Greek Lyric I) (Greek lyric C6th B.C.) : "King Sisyphos (Sisyphus), son of Aiolos (Aeolus), wisest of men, supposed that he was master of Thanatos (Death); but despite his cunning he crossed eddying Akheron (Acheron) twice at at fate's command."
Aeschylus, Sisyphus the Runaway (lost play) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) : Weir Smyth (L.C.L.) quotes from Pherecydes, a C5th B.C. mythographer, in his discussion of the plot of this lost play: "The drama was satyric; its theme, the escape from Haides of the crafty Korinthian king. According to the fabulous story told by Pherekydes (Frag. 78 in Müller,Fragmenta Historicum Graecorum) Sisyphos made known to Asopos that it was Zeus who had carried off his daughter Aigina; in punishment for which offence the god sent Thanatos (Death) against the babbler; but Sisyphos bound Thanatos (Death) fast, so that men ceased to die, until Ares came to the rescue, released Thanatos, and gave Sisyphos into his power."
— THANATOS WRESTLED BY HERACLES
In the Euripides, a Greek tragedy written in the 5th C B.C. Thanatos is wrestled by Heracles to save the life of Alkestis. Heracles does this to repay Admetos, Alklestis’
Euripides, Alcestis 839 ff : "Herakles : I must save this woman who has died so lately, bring Alkestis back to live in this house and pay Admetos all the kindness that I owe. I must go there [to the funeral at the graveside] and watch for Thanatos (Death) of the black robes (melampeplos), master of dead men (anax nekrôn), and I think I shall find him drinking the blood of slaughtered beasts beside the grave. Then, if I can break suddenly from my hiding place, catch him, and hold him in the circle of these arms, there is no way he will be able to break my hold on his bruised ribs, until he gives the woman up to me. But if I miss my quarry, if he does not come to the clotted offering, I must go down, I must ask Kore (Core, the Maiden) [Persephone] and the Master (Anax) [Haides] in the sunless homes of those below (domos anêlios)."
EPITHETS
Greek

- Melampeplos -> of the black robes
- Anax Nekron -> master of dead men
English (these are ones I've derived from text so partial upg)
- insatiable
- dreadful/dreaded one
- awful god
- with a heart of iron
- without mercy
Latin
- Acherontis - inflicter of Acheron (woe)
ORPHIC HYMN
The Fumigation from Manna. Hear me, O Death [Thanatos], whose empire unconfined, extends to mortal tribes of every kind. On thee, the portion of our time depends, whose absence lengthens life, whose presence ends. Thy sleep perpetual bursts the vivid folds, by which the soul, attracting body holds: Common to all of every sex and age, for nought escapes thy all-destructive rage; Not youth itself thy clemency can gain, vigorous and strong, by thee untimely slain. In thee, the end of nature's works is known, in thee, all judgment is absolved alone: No suppliant arts thy dreadful rage control, no vows revoke the purpose of thy soul; O blessed power regard my ardent prayer, and human life to age abundant spare.
MY FAVOURITE MISC. COLLECTION OF TEXTS
Hesiod, Theogony 758 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) : . . . These are Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), dread divinities. Never upon them does Helios, the shining sun, cast the light of his eye-beams, neither when he goes up the sky nor comes down from it. One of these [Hypnos], across the earth and the wide sea-ridges, goes his way quietly back and forth, and is kind to mortals, but the heart of the other one [Thanatos] is iron, and brazen feelings without pity are inside his breast."
Aeschylus, Fragment 82 Niobe (from Stobaeus, Anthology 4. 51. 1) (trans. Weir Smyth) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) : "For, alone of gods, Thanatos (Death) loves not gifts; no, not by sacrifice, nor by libation, canst thou aught avail with him; he hath no altar nor hath he hymn of praise; from him, alone of gods, Peitho (Persuasion) stands aloof."
Aeschylus, Fragment 141 Philoctetes (from Stobaeus, Anthology 4. 52. 32) : "[The wounded Philoktetes (Philoctetes) laments :] ‘O Death (thanatos), the healer (paian), reject me not, but come! For thou alone art the mediciner of ills incurable, and no pain layeth hold on the dead.’"

Habs I want your 36 hour long YouTube analysis on bnha including thoughts on the new info from the fan book SO bad the toga stuff has me biting holes into the walls

Okay, it’s long:
First, stuff I liked:
Deku:
Good to see deku stocks rise, they doubted my nephew but he always comes out on top 🙏🙏
Circling back to 431, I don’t think it was all bad and I don’t hate it like some people do. I like that it shows us how passionate he is as a teacher and that he was able to carve out a path for himself outside of hero work. I think people were quick to judge him and make assumptions about him after declining Katsuki’s sidekick proposal, and it was Rough having to see Deku get bashed for it for months. I’m so happy that the new info shows that he didn’t give up on those heroic dreams, he just had to find the balance between teaching and being a pro.
I’m over the moon that he’s #4 and that Katsuki’s ranking bounced back too to #5 as a reaction to Deku being back on the hero scene, this is what I wanted so much from the ending, the two of them fighting neck-in-neck, competing for forever, teasing each other and being in each other’s lives… it’s perfect :’))
I think it’s so cool that apparently Deku was still placing in the top 100 despite being retired because of the extended requirements on the hero ranking, but I think that info should have come up in 430. The epilogue suggested that hero charts were going to be restructured or done away with entirely, and I think it’s silly that it’s only vaguely touched on in an art book lol. That should’ve been part of the main ending.
Streets are saying Deku did not get a degree before he started his teaching career… I’m electing to ignore that because I really want to imagine him in uni. I think it’s fair that UA wouldn’t have traditional standards for teachers… but let my boy get some certification before putting him in charge of a class c’mon.. But also this could be a bit of a misinterpretation considering there’s no official english translations out yet.
Also I’m so glad that it’s confirmed the suit mimics the ofa quirks !! I was worried that wasn’t gonna be the case and I was gonna end up disappointed but I can rest easy!
Bakugou:
I talked about him already kind of but the thing I’m happy to learn the most about from the art book is that supposedly older pro heroes have a soft spot for him. I think there’s something really endearing about that, and I feel like despite having a “bad attitude” he’s such a sentimental and sweet character and he’s grown so much from the middle school punk from chapter 1. He’s got this blunt but genuine quality to him and I think that’s what older characters would latch onto.
I am such a big fan of his friendship with todorok and love what they said about it in the book under todoroki’s section. Also a big fan of the tidbit that monoma tried to get close to him after the war, the guy saw him die right, and there’s something very touching about him trying to reach out and check up of katsuki and worm his way into his life because of that trauma idk. I want to make something about their friendship maybe.
Eri:
IThe information that jirou helped eri with guitar lessons fills my heart with so much joy :’)) I love that Eri has so many older siblings who all love her and want to teach her stuff and be part of her life and cheer her on
I really like that she’s pursuing music! I know some people wanted her to go down the hero path too, but I think it’s really nice that she was able to carve out a path that makes her happiest. It’s what first brought a smile to her face! When class A performed! And seeing her be able to live that dream is so nice :’))
Deku and mirio being her biggest cheerleaders also makes me so happyy. Those are her older brothers frfr.
I’m really glad the one shot was focused on her, very great thag we get to see her relationship with aizawa and the teachers, and learn about her life now. I was so worried about what the extra pages were gonna be about and it was such a pleasant surprise lol
Things I’m… less of a fan of:
Uraraka:
It’s genuinely criminal that the art book doesn’t touch on her reformed quirk counselling programs at all. To me, this was one of the most interesting tidbits of info we got from class 1-A in 430, and something I really wish we’d been able to learn more about.
It’s very clear that her character’s potential was tossed aside the entire story, and honestly her relationship with deku was too. I’m not really a fan of izuocha, but I am a lover of character relationships and the lack of growth the two had together throughout the series was very disappointing to me. I think the idea of romance between them and horikoshi’s aversion to writing it got in the way of their actual relationship and it stayed stagnant for too long — which is why 431 feels so disappointing in that regard — because they should have gotten closer in the actual story instead of in an add-on epilogue chapter.
All that to say, from what I’ve seen from the artbook, her info section is taken up mostly by things that relate to izuku, all we really learn is her parents don’t use the money she sends them LMAO. It’s just so strange for her to be both disregarded as a character and labelled the “Love Interest” when it comes to talking about her as her own person, but yet not have really any development alongside the character she’s supposedly going to end up with in the actual story.
She’s apparently there to cheer deku on, that’s the role they want her to have. They don’t care about who she is outside of that even though her entire character is a separate person with a life and a story beyond having a crush on a boy. It’s misogyny lol.
Toga and the LOV:
Speaking of misogyny… Toga’s death :( Learning that there were other options for her is upsetting. The artbook has really reopened my feelings about all the endings for the LoV members.
In my mind toga had the most satisfying ending, but that’s really not saying much. I don’t think she should’ve died, I don’t think her “facing responsibility/taking accountability” had to mean the only ending for her was death. She was a kid, she was mentally ill, she wanted love and to be loved and to me, her death being off-screened and used as canon-fodder for uraraka’s feelings and to be pushed towards izuku was so upsetting.
Idk it just feels like a habit for the female characters to be sidelined and for their sacrifices and deaths to be pushed to the side, it’s aggravating.
With the lov in general, it just seems like the overall message is there’s no real path to redemption, that the only way they could find it is to die. For a story that seems to want to highlight the fact that everyone can be saved, and that things aren’t so black and white, and that it’s the fault in society that drove these “villains” to where they are, it really does treat them as if they’re completely and utterly irredeemable and there was never any hope for them. That they are a product of their nature/nurture and cannot escape it any way but through dying. It’s not even tragic, it feels lazy and unsatisfying and feels like it goes against whatever the message of the story was supposed to be.
Idk I’ve defended mha a lot, and I think there’s a lot of positives in it. I think it does have strong messages that no one person can fix issues that are societal in nature, and that real change comes with forming community and being there for those around us. Etc etc. But I’m disappointed that a lot of the themes of mha fell flat and don’t go deeper than surface level.
I’m upset that horikoshi has made these compelling and very human villains, and shown us their stories and that they’re not all evil at the core, and then decided that their arcs all had to end in pain and suffering.
The one who upsets me the most is Tomura. He’s been one of my favourite characters since the beginning, and I think his ending hit me the worst. To me it felt like he was right on the cusp of something and then afo came in and told him his whole life was a lie, that he was groomed to be an angry man with half a quirk that could only destroy, and every choice he’d ever made was directly under afo’s influence. That he never had any free will, he was always meant to go down this path. I thought for sure the final battle with deku and afo would have shigaraki fighting back against the possession, and I was disappointed that his final moments were barely anything at all.
Learning about his original quirk and the original plans for his ending, it’s made me angry about his arc all over again. Thinking about how things could’ve been, and that there were other options for his final moments, I’m frustrated.
I hate that the villain’s are used as emotional canon fodder, to serve as character development for the heroic main characters, when horikoshi made us so invested in their stories as well. You just end up wanting to root for them, not in a “I want them taking over the world” way, but in a way where they find some sort of happiness. And we kind of maybe get that from toga, but to me all their endings just don’t hit the mark. They feel cheap and unsatisfying, and this art book drives a lot of that home for me.
Anyways yeah. I’m gonna stop myself here before I go crazy lol. Hope this made sense
#ask#mha manga spoilers#this is like 1600+ words waow#I didn’t mention dabi but look at whatever beybuniki’s said on that cause I agree
