Big ensembles, the queens of pop, rocky romances, and love-it-or-hate-it pop culture artifacts—they’re all here.

We're on the eve of summer blockbuster season, but we’ve already seen several strong releases, including one below I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m still thinking about in December. Keep scrolling through this Round Up for the top comedies, classics, and action thrillers I experienced April in the order I experienced them...

April Crowd-Pleasers

1. Monkey Man (2024)

Part John Wick, part Rocky, and part something all its own, Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut is a brutal revenge thriller action fans will love. Watch my full review for KMOV.  Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10

2. SNL Round Up

Just last month I was low-key mourning an underwhelming season of Saturday Night Live, but then Kristen Wiig and Ryan Gosling came to revive my hopes with two of the best episodes in awhile. Start with “Beavis and Butt-Head” or just cue up both episodes and watch start-to-finish.

This update of Working Girl set in the art world is, to put it bluntly, just super cute. Camila Mendes has the star power to lead movies bigger than Prime originals (including the winning charisma needed for the best rom-coms), and we could use Marisa Tomei in more of everything. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6.5/10

4. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

It’s not every day I get to mention The Guns of Navarone in a review. This movie is selling itself to you (and your dad) as an opportunity to watch Superman and Jack Reacher kill a bunch of Nazis, and with Guy Ritchie directing, this action-adventure is plenty fun. Read my full review at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7.5/10

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-21)

Thanks to Southwest Airlines, I've seen a smattering of the eight seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but with the first four seasons now on Netflix, April became the month to watch it all the way through. Like Mike Schur’s other sitcoms (The Good Place, The Office, Parks and Recreation), the joke rate is exceptionally high and the characters are lovable and idiosyncratic. If a sitcom filled with Halloween heists, umpteen references to Die Hard, and the silliest possible cases for police offers sounds like your jam, you won’t be disappointed, either. 

MORE APRIL CROWD-PLEASERS: If you can roll with the half-developed plotting (and a few cruder-than-necessary moments) in the stylish Lisa Frankenstein (2024), this ‘80s-set homage to Heathers is a lot of fun. // When I tried to watch High Fidelity (2000) as a teenager, I quit about 30 minutes in because John Cusack’s man-child protagonist was so unlikeable. I’m glad I gave it another chance as an adult so I could realize that’s the point. // Jake Johnson’s feature directorial debut Self Reliance (2023) is successful as both a comedy and a thriller. // How to Marry Keanu Reeves in 90 Days by K.M. Jackson (2021) is a frothy BFFs-to-true-loves rom-com filled with celebrity cameos. // Smokey and the Bandit (1977) is way more fun than a movie about greedy lawbreakers should be.

April Critic Picks

1. The Lost Weekend (1945)

The Best Picture Project continues with Billy Wilder’s first bout of Oscar glory. Read my Crowd and Critic reviews (or just keep scrolling to the previous post if you’re on the home page.) Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 9/10

2. Cowboy Carter by Beyoncé (2024)

The problem of writing about Beyoncé is it’s boring to just keep finding new ways to say, “She’s really good at this!” I could write about the sincerity the coming-of-age heartbreak in “16 CARRIAGES,” the epic nature of the bookends “AMERICAN REQUIEM” and “AMEN,” the innovation on “JOLENE” and “BLACKBIIRD,” and the absolute banger that is “YA YA.” (The only real surprise is I’ve found a second Post Malone song I like.) Because I’m a film critic and not a music critic (or much of a country fan), I recommend checking out the Los Angeles Times review for more context on how this fits into her canon and the history of country music.

3. The Heartbreak Kid (1972)

Why is this rom-com from Elaine May so hard to find? Because my local library is awesome, I’ve now finally seen Charles Grodin get married and then think he may have met the real love of his life (Cybill Shepherd) on his honeymoon. More than five decades later, May’s hilarious and cringey film still has plenty of insight into men’s and women’s relationships (and sunburns), and (minor spoiler alert) its ending is a perfect companion to The Graduate. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9.5/10

4. Civil War (2024) 

I saw someone on Letterboxd call this movie a Rorschach test, and boy, oh boy, that’s an undersell. Civil War is brilliant not because of the political statements it’s making if for no other reason than it makes very few of them. This photojournalist road trip is about the impossibility of complete objectivity, but more than that, it’s about the destructive nature of hostile disagreement. An alliance between California and Texas is writer/director Alex Garland deliberately telling us not to get hung up in our moment’s political issues—if we are so convinced of our own self-righteousness, we’ll lose everything we claim to be fighting for. The Jesse Plemons performance is my premature pick for Best Scene of 2024. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10

5. The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift (2024)

The prophet has come down from the mountain. Somewhere in my third listen, The Tortured Poets Department snuck up on me. I thought this would be another evermore: worthy of mad respect, but too lugubrious to be a frequent relisten outside of “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” While that tragic bop is the current contender for the top spot in this year's Spotify 100, “The Tortured Poets Department,” “Clara Bow,” “Fortnight” (now only the third Post Malone song I’ve ever liked), and “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” will also certainly be in my annual playlist—and that’s just Side A! On Side B, the Daedalian lyrics of “The Black Dog,” “imgonnagetyouback,” “So High School,” “I Hate It Here,” and “I Look in People’s Windows” elevate their sad stories into awe-inspiring strings of words. Whom she and her collaborators are writing about is beside the point; even at billionaire status, Swift’s heartbreak, regret, hope, and indignation are as relatable as ever, sp she can write about high school as long as she likes. Because I’m a film critic and not a music critic, I recommend checking out Variety’s review for more thoughtful (and perhaps more objective) prose about this collection of poetry.

MORE APRIL CRITIC PICKS: Unfaithfully Yours (1948) is an early entry in the Symphony Conductors Dealing With Marital Issues Cinematic Universe that paved the way for Tár and Maestro. // Frank Capra’s semi-forgotten early feature Platinum Blonde (1931) fits right in his legacy of class-conscious rom-coms. // The spectacle of Cleopatra (1963) still dazzles even now.

summary: after agreeing to stay behind with the equipment when Jane and Darcy were swept up by SHIELD, Erin ends up as the weapon in Loki's attempts at emotional terrorism.

Erin regretted her decision to stay behind with Jane's equipment almost immediately. At first it was the boredom. She knew how every piece of equipment worked (did SHIELD not realize that?), but it wasn't going to be much use until the sun went down. Without the distraction of three other people running around, the data they got the prior night was either reviewed and documented within an hour or too complex for her to understand.

However, the boredom was a much better problem to have than her next one. She turned around from the whiteboard (her cat drawings were improving, thank you very much) and nearly ran herself through with a bladed scepter.

Erin froze, her body refusing to even take in a breath, much less try to run or fight. The blade had pierced her tank top and was pressing into her sternum, and Erin braced herself for death.

Except it didn't come.

Erin finally allowed herself to look up at who was holding the weapon, and she found herself face to face with a dark-haired man with toxic blue eyes. A look of pure befuddlement crossed his face, and he looked from where the scepter touched Erin to her face.

The man sighed and shrugged his shoulders, bringing the scepter down. "No matter," he started. "I was planning on using the scepter to control you, but there are other ways, Dr. Foster."

"I'm not Dr. Foster; SHIELD nabbed her and Darcy this morning," Erin replied. "I'm just here to watch the equipment."

Again, the man looked her over. "You were here before," he said. "While that oaf was banished."

Erin's brows furrowed together. "Oa- do you mean Thor?" she asked. "Don't talk about my friend like that!"

It quickly became apparent that she shouldn't have said that, if the hand on her neck was any indication. "That louse," the man began, "has ruined my life over and over again, and now I'm going to ruin his. Using the scepter would have been much kinder, but there are other ways to use you to harm him." He pushed forward, slamming her into the wall.

A moan escaped Erin before she could stop it.

The man- Loki, she had surmised by now- hesitated, stunned by the response to his brutality. Then, a soft chuckle escaped him. "Do you like that, mortal?" he asked, keeping the pressure on her neck just light enough that she could still breathe. "Do you like having a hand wrapped around your throat, controlling how much air you get, just a fraction away from ending you?"

"N-no," Erin choked out.

Loki just grinned. "If you truly wish to be deceitful with the god of lies, you'd do well to get better at lying." He placed the scepter down on a table, then used the hand around Erin's neck to lift her off her feet and carry her across the room, her legs kicking madly all the while.

Loki finally set her down, forcing her to sit on another table, and when he snapped is fingers, it cleared itself off. "You have two options here, girl. You can either hurt my brother when he learns how his mortal friend begged for my cock, or you can hurt him when he learns how you begged for mercy before I snapped that pretty little neck of yours. Take your pick."

Erin was nothing if not pragmatic. It was what led her to astrophysics in the first place. And she knew damn well that neither of the options she was presented with would keep her alive for long.

Solution in mind, Erin straightened her back and slowly removed her jacket. "You want to hurt Thor?" she asked, tossing the article of clothing aside. "Let me tell you exactly how to make me beg, and then I'll tell him myself."

Loki smirked, admiring the body that was slowly being revealed to him. "That does sound promising," he mused. He reached out, ghosting his fingers along his neck. "Will strangling you half to death not suffice?"

"Not if you really, truly want me to beg. Which would be more satisfying? Fucking me like a brainless, rutting bull then telling Thor I begged for it, or watching the look on his face when he realizes it's true? That you didn't have to force me at all, that all it took was a few little tricks, and you had me begging for my master's cock, ready and willing to betray my friend?"

A low growl rumbled in Loki's chest, and he unbuttoned Erin's pants, reaching down below her underwear. "It seems our conversation is already making you wet, my dear," he mused. He leaned in and whispered in her ear. "I can't wait to hear how to make you scream."

6. What point of view do you tend to write in? Do all of your pieces use the same POV? Do you have strong opinions on the POV used in novels?

Third person limited!! Third person limited!!

I dabbled in first person in my earliest days of writing in middle school, but I don’t enjoy writing it very much. I’ve written a little bit in second person for specific fics, when I wanted to convey a sense of disassociation in a character. I prefer third person limited because for me it’s the perfect balance of inner thoughts and outer experience. 

I don’t have strong opinions on POV in other fics or novels- I think every writer should write the POV that suits them, and any story can be enjoyable in any POV if it’s written well. 

20. If you were published and had complete control over your covers, what would it look like? Do you have any specific artists that you’d like to illustrate it? Do you like when characters are pictured on covers or do you prefer inanimate objects?

Oh man.

I love really pretty graphic covers with a specific vibe- looking at my shelves, my favorite covers are probably The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert, House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig, and the Rifle Paper Company edition of Alice in Wonderland.

But I also love really well done stylized illustrations- I have an edition of Peter Pan with oil paintings by Scott Gustafson, and the covers of the Larklight trilogy by Phillip Reeve are really cool. 

For my own hypothetical book, I’d want one of those two options, probably. My least favorite style of book cover is the “stock photo of a pretty girl” type.

The world is insane and always has been but, we need many doses of good things! So here goes, eh?

@kychchc - I remember this lovely around the first two years I created this blog but, she was under a different username back then! Their Scarlet is well written, relatable, beautiful, strong and a fleshed out character with great care given to them. The mun is also A++ and a good person who is loads fun to speak with.

@sadistic-second - There will be many Renos on this list but, starting off lemme give love to this one here. Snarky, fun, funny and well ...downright sadistic! Reno is a character that takes certain panache and panache they've got! I've seen them do some lengthy and plot driven threads that are incredible to read. The mun is cool af and really chill to talk to.

@fastest-turk - Another Reno that is written well and how you would expect Reno to be. Snappy comebacks, funny dialogue with a dose of needed seriousness where it counts. You can be assured that you will have fun getting into hijinxs with this one! The mun is also basically Reno but, university bound Reno but, also a chick. A really cool ass chick.

@ask-the-red-haired-turk - Now I'll admit I haven't hung out with this Reno much but, we have interacted and they are super cool. The common thread between all of these Renos are how the muns seem to seamlessly write this nutty redhead with hardly an issue. In character, that very Reno swagger and turn of phrase we all know and love. They got it. And just like the other two the mun is great to plot with and in general chat with. They're good people.

@finalhxaven - I have (in my memory) only recently interacted at any great length with this Tifa but, so far I am having so much fun! The sweet, kind, generous, ass kicking, will make-you-say-sorry-in-three-seconds-or-you-will-have-bruises Tifa Lockhart. I can tell this will be a fun ride and do get a chance to meet the mun; they're a cutie.

@ivory-paragon - The only Rufus I have personally interacted with. Holy mother of Sephiroth they're so good!! This, this is Rufus Shinra and you cannot convince me otherwise. From the expression, the manner of speaking, the intricacies of his mind; everything is written as such that you must be sure Rufus is writing out little novellas about his life. The mun is a great guy, smart and witty just like his character.

@xnotamemoryx - So, Sephiroth is a great villain to many yes? Yes. My friend here is an absolute genius when it comes to writing for amoral characters like you would not believe. I know they have not had the chance to do too much on here but, when the time comes around they will not disappoint. Mun has been my friend for a little over a decade now and I can vouch for them!

@exsiliumductoris - Veld! (They also have good side RP blogs. Check em out!) I love Veld, we should all appreciate Veld for what he is. They write the venerated grumpy Turk with the kind of dead pan, I'm too old for this gruffness you would expect. Even though we all are aware that Veld is actually capable of being nice. Also, the mun. They are great to even just shoot the breeze with outside of fandom talk!

@rude-at-your-service - Rude, basically. The writing for Rude is spot on with how he carries himself, how he sees his job and the people around said job. He's great because there is a level of humor there that feels subtle to me and especially with how he manages to deal with Reeve's antics. The mun is this cool polyglot who is friendly and kind.

@driftingjazzbard - Non FF but, not a problem! A multifaceted, well written, thought out proper, sassy, empathetic, intelligent OC who is a traveling musician. Erin is a character who can be written into many fantasy themed fandoms with nary a hitch due to the mun's undeniable creativity. Ah yes, speaking of the mun you should really get to know her! She is just as multifaceted and knowledgeable as her muse!

I speak with a stutter (it’s not as bad as it used to be when I was little but I still have it and I’m still kind of insecure about it)

Refer back to my weighing over 200 pounds: I don’t even look it, and it’s kind of a trip to see women weigh less than me who are freaking huge. I’m as big as I am because the other alternative was literally starving to death: I almost became an anorexic when I was 13, and it came to a head when I was 19 and wouldn’t stop losing weight from depression. So as part of my recovery, I reconciled my relationship with food, and I just started eating. I’m trying to get up to 230 and tbh, I wouldn’t mind climbing up to 240.

It’s funny because I feel like such a rebel liking Joey as much as I do. The latest thing is to like fat boys and “dad bods”, and even taking it further and getting like almost morbid about it--when I was writing Have Your Cake I often lurked in the feedism tags on here to grasp the idea of the community; when I visit them now, the latest thing is to be like “this lifestyle is totally gonna kill you but you’re sooo hot so keep it up!”. This almost feels akin to when Audrey Hepburn came on the beauty scene with her thin elegance, the reaction to all of the full figured woman: he’s a slim, lush, gorgeous man who needs a lot more love (”raw beauty if I ever did see it” as Mr. Lang put it).

I’ve always wanted to get inked but I never know what to ink myself with, or where to put it for that matter.

The one time I ever cut my hair, like had it cut short, was 20 years ago in the first grade. The longest it’s ever been was down to the halfway point of my thigh when I was... 15? Right now it’s down around my butt.

Recovering cutter: I started in 2006 after my grandpa passed and then I stopped; did it again after my parents split in 2011, and again after Chris passed; I’ve been clean since August 22, 2017, three months following his death. 

Chris was a fan of my art. It’s true! My little cartoons never would’ve become the entities they are now without him.

My cartoons have been labelled everything from “grunge” to “metal” to (recently) “emo”. I’m actually fine with just any label you throw at them: just don’t call them anime because that’s not technically correct (anime is animation; manga is printed works, and even that’s bit of a stretch)--my writing meanwhile has been simply labelled “unusual”

I’ve always been a fic writer, but I never actually wrote-wrote a fanfic until I was a freshman in high school. I never went online with a fic until 2013 and then I pretty much stopped it for a few years to focus on school and preserving my mental health until earlier this year with Have Your Cake and Eat It.

Fuuuuuuuck I love food. Yeah, when I say you’re better off asking me what I don’t like I mean it. I will eat just about anything (i’m actually surprised I’m not fat tbh). I’m as much a lady of the flesh as I am a lady of intellect.

When's the last time you played air guitar? Probably around my birthday in November, I had a Keanu Reeves-themed birthday party (I love him) and the first film we watched was BILL AND TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE, which is a masterpiece of cinema, thank you.

Who's your celeb crush? Keanu is always my number one, now and forever. Lately, though, I’m obsessed with Cody Fern and Billie Lourd, because they are soft and perfect Cancer angels and Millory is the GOAT (and because I’m bisexual and they are both great examples as to why!). Never gonna get over the fact that Ryan Murphy wasted all that potential, still hoping eventually he’ll make them romantically attached in one of the upcoming seasons to apologize to all of us.

What is one sound you hate, and one you love? Sound I love: oh god, so many, but I love the sound of the pages of a book turning, especially in a very quiet place like a library. Coffee being poured into a cup. The little sounds my cat makes. My partner’s voice. Sound I hate: people yelling or talking way too loudly for no discernible reason. I work in a cafe and it happens a LOT and it always makes me insane. So many people have no idea of a proper volume for indoors. Please stop screaming.

Do you believe in ghosts? Yes. I’m a practicing solitary witch and I believe strongly in the supernatural and the hidden world. I think some spirits get trapped and are afraid to move on; I also think some spirits are dark energy.

What about aliens? Yes. I desperately hope there are other beings out there in the universe. The idea of us being alone is terribly sad to me. I think aliens are VERY different from how most people perceive them, though; so different from us, in all likelihood, that the average human would have a very hard time empathizing with them in any capacity. It would be hard for us, as narrow-minded as we are, to cope with them. Also, any alien civilization with the starpower to reach us would be thousands of times more scientifically advanced than us. Like us vs. an insect. They would probably have no interest in us at all. Hard to wrap your head around.

Do you drive? Nope. I live in Philadelphia, a great “walking city”; you can get most places easily by walking or taking public transportation. I live a 15 minute walk away from my work and I love it so much. I might get my license some day but it currently doesn’t interest me at all. My partner drives and has a car, so he does the driving in our relationship.

What was the last book you read? The last novel I read was LISEY’S STORY by Stephen King, I think. I loved it. Right now I’m reading I’LL HAVE WHAT SHE’S HAVING: How Nora Ephron’s Three Iconic Films Saved The Romantic Comedy by Erin Carlson. I love romantic comedies and think they have a lot of cultural value; I love Ephron as well and I’m enjoying the book, but I’ve been writing so much; I haven’t had a lot of time to read lately.

Do you like the smell of gasoline? No, I find it unnerving.

What was the last movie you saw? I watched THE LAST TIME I SAW RICHARD the other day, a short film with Cody by Nicholas Verso. I loved it. It’s only 22-minutes long but it’s got a great spooky atmosphere and themes about queer shame and mental health. I loved it. The last film I watched before that was IO on Netflix; I LOVE Margaret Qualley but it was very dull. Again, I’ve been writing so much, I haven’t had much time to watch stuff the past couple weeks. Usually I watch a film like every day, but this fic has taken over my life.

Do you have any obsessions right now? My Millory/House of Cards crossover AU fanfic, BODY AND SOUL. I have been writing CONSTANTLY (I’m well over 60k words) and I think about it all day. It’s amazing to write something for myself this way; I’ve been doing films reviews/criticism for over 3 years but I haven’t done fiction in like a decade and to know I still can, that I’m not broken, has been incredibly cathartic and transcendent for me. This fic is gonna be novel length and when I finish it, it’ll be a huge personal achievement for me. I feel emotional a lot lately.

Do you hold grudges against people who have done you wrong? It depends on the nature and depth of the wrong; it’s hard for me, nearly impossible, to forgive certain kinds of betrayal. More likely than not, if you have seriously wronged me, I Ghost you: I disappear from your life, and you’re not invited back into mine.

In a relationship? Yes, for 7 years (I’m 31, my partner is gonna be 34 in March, he’s an Aries). My romantic relationship and my personal life, to me, is maybe the most complex and difficult thing I have ever had to navigate, but I love my partner with a fierce, protective love; we’ve built this relationship with our blood, sweat and tears. Being with someone for a long time is hard to describe to other people. It’s so much work but it’s so transcendent. Trying to get to know another person is maybe the hardest thing any human will ever have to do. And I definitely think romantic relationships are not for everyone. But mine has become the bedrock and foundation of my life.

WHG 15 - Day 1

As the podiums rise up into the arena, the tributes are greeted with a forest of mutant plants. The trees have either silver or gold leaves, black vines are visibly growing up the trees and on the ground, and there are flowers that randomly burst into fire or ice and then back to regular. The herbs and poisonous plants that the tributes studied are the same, however. The Cornucopia is in the middle of a clearing, stuffed with supplies and weapons, and there are a few supplies radiating out of the Cornucopia. The countdown ends, and the bloodbath begins!

Volt starts out the Games with a bullseye, much to Arthur’s dismay. And Ellery starts the Games off with a bang! Sean really wants Syl’s supplies, and Rabban gets stabbed with a deadly tree branch. Most people make the smart choice to run away, but Avi and Enzo find explosives, Erin finds a first aid kit, and Reine and Ash work together to fish later! A fun way to start!

Reine decided to abandon the fishing idea and instead thinks it’s a great idea to join with the two tributes who have explosives and another tribute who has already killed someone, just to hunt for other tributes. RJ tries to up her kill count, but Aerith has other plans. RIP RJ. 

Already five deaths on the first day.

A lot of characters not able to start fires here. Erin somehow procures a spear off-screen, and she uses it effectively. Other than that, an uneventful night.
