What are you deepest darkest headcannons about Aizawa X Ide? Tell the world of your crimes. Show us the blood on your hands. The blood.. of old .. man.. yaoi..
this is a VERY GOOD question because I have a lot of them...
headcanons:
were each other's first loves (aizawa didn't realise it until over 20 years later that those feelings were not just platonic but romantic as well...)
ide and eriko have a complicated relationship... they're like strained siblings really.
ide likes to insist that love at first sight is absolute bullshit and completely fictional but he fell for aizawa the moment he saw him so he doesn't get to talk. it's actually pathetic.
they take their smoke breaks together, ocassionally will share a cigarette but often light one another's cigarettes
codependent bitches, have never gone longer than a few days without seeing one another until the kira case. live in the same apartment complex but different floors in their thirties, so they often go over to one another's places and ide will babysit yumi as needed. ide runs out of beer? he just takes a beer from Aizawa's fridge. yumi decides that her mum and dad are being unfair? she goes to uncle hideki's house and chills with him for a while.
when ide wasn't on the Kira case but aizawa was they were undeniably extremely unpleasant people. surprisingly, despite both of them having short tempers, they are more chill around one another because if one of them stays calm, the other will as well. aizawa would occasionally talk to ide by complete accident still thinking he was there even tho he wasn't. like aizawa will say "hideki, get the printing" and he'll be answered with silence and look up only to see his best friend isn't there
romantic feelings are definitely there, but neither of them like addressing it or calling it as it is. a friendship reeking of romantic tension. they have like romantic and platonic feelings towards one another, they're complicated and neither can explain it. on the scale with platonic and romantic at opposing ends, ide's are more romantic and aizawa's are more platonic, but both are truly towards the middle.
ide was best man at aizawa's wedding
ide is bad with all kids except aizawa's. literally all children but his. aizawa thinks it's because the kids have the "fond of hideki" gene whereas ide thinks it's because aizawa is their parent
met at 18 when training for the NPA and became friends immediately, right on the spot. did quite a lot of stupid shit together
I hc a lot simultaneously in different universes for them but I won't go into it now
we don't talk about the fact that I've had this post in my drafts for around eight months...

DN Fic Recs!!
Aight, I think the Death Note fandom could use some positivity. And I wanna be positive :D! So here is a list of fics with reviews, aka a thinly-veiled excuse to wildly ramble about brilliant fics made by incredibly talented people. A lot of these works inspire me, so I want to share them with others! If these fics sound interesting to you, I highly recommend that you check them out and give the authors lots of love :D
Anyway, here we go!
Fallout by Zaney HacknSlash Rating: M (FFN) Ships: (Not the main focus) eventual Matsu x Sayu, eventual Ide x OC, background Aizawa x Eriko, (kinda) Mogi x Misa
Dude. Duuuuude. If you want to see an action-packed, angst-filled joyride of a fic featuring the Task Force after Kira, this is it. This is a 10 year old rewrite of the original version of the fic, but it has a lot of the old fandom charm left over from the 2008 original. The plot is centered on the guilt Matsuda feels after shooting Light, and what he has to do when a mysterious enemy forces him to confront that guilt.
I like how the author gives us insight into every major character in the story. The flipping perspectives keep the story grounded in some places, but make it chaotic when it needs to be. Most importantly, I like how we see, inside and out, how tight-knit the Task Force has become after everything they've gone through. I also enjoy how each of the Task Force members have their own dilemmas and struggles that pay off by the end, all to do with loyalty. Overall, Fallout is an epic story with action, suspense, and plenty of original characters that don't overstay their welcome.
True Successor by @mapsareforbraindeads Rating: M (AO3) Ships: Beyond x Light, BeyondTsuda
I think this was the first fic that really helped me get the appeal of Beyond Birthday, and that's a feat all on its own. Here, Vari takes the original story of Death Note and flips it on its head with an idea that sounds like "crack treated seriously" on paper: What if L was dead before the events of the story? What if, instead, he were replaced by someone looking to, "realize what [L] could not"?
The portrayal of Beyond's mental state throughout is simply breathtaking. One standout (not-too-spoilery) example happens when Ukita dies as in canon. Vari does an incredible job of showing Beyond's frantic thoughts to the point where this part is actually stressful to read. I really wish I could go into more detail about how Beyond is portrayed, but it's really worth reading for yourself. Like I said, this fic helped me understand why people like B's story so much.
Even if you've never read the LABB book (I haven't yet), True Successor is an utterly fantastic work that you should check out.
Weakness by Airmid Rating: M (AO3) Ship: LawTsuda
I think I've talked about this one before, but it's worth talking about again. I think of this as "the" LawTsuda fanfic for a couple reasons, most notably in that it really makes the pairing work in a setting that's close to canon. I really adore the way Airmid characterizes L and Matsuda in this fic and immediately contrasts them from each other. The events of Weakness take place before L's death in canon, and the story asks some simple questions: What would have happened if L let himself confide in someone before he died? And what if that person was Matsuda?
I've read some of Airmid's other, longer, works, and while I enjoyed Happiness and Until the End, Weakness stands out to me because it feels a lot "tighter", if that makes sense. Using the bells from the anime, we get this very solid through-line of L secretly worrying and preparing for the inevitable... And then Matsuda comes in. This fic in particular continues to be a huge inspiration for a fic I'm writing, especially for the portrayal of Matsuda as equally earnest and impulsive.
Pretty much anything by Tallulah
Okay, I wish I could pick just one to talk about here. From the short and devastating Axioms to the very long and devastating Broken Hallelujahs, all of Tallulah's works—the smutty and the soul-crushing—have intriguing worlds and deep, dark characters. Just make sure you mind the tags before diving in, these ones get dark. As a MatsuIde fan, I've got to give a shout-out to Saviour. It took a while for me to "get" the style of the fic, but in the end I really loved the tone. The way Tallulah depicts the dissociation and trauma of these characters feels incredibly real, and when the fic drops its unique formatting to symbolize the characters "snapping out of it", you feel it. Broken Hallelujahs has a similar vibe, but its story has more fast-paced action. Ooh, and The End of Days is an incredibly solid, more "canon-compliant", work featuring Aizawa x Ide x Matsuda, a guilty pleasure ship for me.
Twisted Fate by TwilightMaster15 Rating: M (AO3) Ships: None tagged so far, background LawLight
If you've been in the DN fanfic scene, I'm sure you've seen (or maybe read) a "What if L was Kira?" fic. Well, here's a new one. What if Aizawa was Kira?
This is another fic that takes what could be a "crack" scenario and executes it super super well. Rather than getting a childish Kira who calls himself "God of the New World", we have Aizawa, who has become disillusioned by the justice system he works in. The fic does a really good job in setting up Aizawa's relationships, good and bad, with the other characters, as well as showing the very different choices Aizawa!Kira makes versus Canon!Light. Speaking of Light, his motivations and role in the story are very well-done. His inclusion feels incredibly natural, and I can't wait to see what he and L do next.
Kira's Guide to the Munchies by @palant1r Rating: T (AO3) Ship: MatsuLight
I've gotta end this list with a funny one, alright? This fic is an absolutely delightful treat. It's like digging into a nice, warm brownie... Oh, wait.
See, Palant1r doesn't just characterize Matsuda and Light, more like dissects these characters' essences, their weaknesses and fears and flaws, and lays them bare for the reader to see. And yes, this is also true for when Matsuda and Light are tripping fucking balls. This fic is so very silly, but we also get to see the way these characters think, even if their faculties are hindered by quite a bit of weed. A character study wrapped in a goofy concept, Kira's Guide to the Munchies is a ride that you just have to read to believe. Seriously. I was thinking about quoting lines here, but it works better when you don't know what's coming next.

I have been wondering about this for a while, so I'm just going to put this question into the universe. Why didn't Light kill Aizawa?
Think about it. Of everyone on the task force, Aizawa had the highest reward for killing him, since he is the most naturally skeptical, and he is also the easiest to kill because of his negative relationship with his wife. A negative relationship that, from Soichiro's resigned reaction when Aizawa admitted his wife hit him during a fight, has been going on for a considerable amount of time. Even if the idea were proposed later by Near that Kira killed Aizawa should he die in an instance of domestic violence gone wrong, there would be no way to prove it one way or another.
It could be argued Light had a reason not to kill Aizawa during the time skip since Aizawa was the one who put his foot down against Light and Misa's confinement, and Light wasn't actively thinking about wiping out the whole task force until after his father died. But what about after Soichiro died? Once again, in that very same instance that killed his father, Aizawa found himself in a situation where he was the easiest to kill. Besides Soichiro, Aizawa was the heaviest injured. While they toned it down in the anime, his whole upper body was bandaged in the manga, especially around his head, and he was unconscious through Soichiro's death and returning the notebook to Sidoh. Even if Light was on the fence about it until his father died, Aizawa was unconscious long enough that Light could have had some time alone and used the piece in his watch to make Aizawa die in a coma or something, leading to another situation where Near would have no way to prove one way or another if Kira made the kill or if he just died from his injuries in the bomb.
In both scenarios, but especially in arc 2, there is a strategic advantage in killing him, namely in the form of Ide. Ide made it pretty clear he was on this case for Aizawa, so while he could stay on and promise to finish what his partner started, Light's skilled enough in manipulation to turn this to his advantage.
Blame the kill on Eriko? This could be an opening into bringing Ide and even other task force members onto Kira's side since someone they know and care about was murdered.
Blame the kill on Mello? Same outcome with the added bonus of an even greater motive for revenge against Mello without Soichiro there to stop them. Because Near still trusted Mello, Mello's information was what put the 13-day rule into question, and Near allied with Mello to kidnap Mogi... that would go about as well as one would expect. The task force already hated Mello because of Soichiro's death, and it was Aizawa who went to see Near and later began suspecting Light. If Aizawa's dead supposedly because of Mello, that's even more reason for the surviving task force not to trust a word Mello and by extent Near says.
I'm not saying I wish Aizawa had died. On the contrary, he is one of my favorite characters. I'm just wondering why Light didn't kill him if he was planning on turning the task force into chalk outlines anyway, especially with so many benefits to Light's plans should he die.

I really like casual, past Ide/Aizawa mentions in fics. It's very specific I know, but them being involved with each other at some point in life is so important to me.
Like, I'm not a huge fan of current Ide/Aizawa, but I like to think that they were together once, probably at the police academy when they were young, before Aizawa met Eriko and they just slowly but surely fell for each other.
(This was supposed to be like my hc's and general thoughts but it is Quite Late and ig its kind of a ficlety thing now?? Anyway I hope the readmore works)
They probably wouldn't put a name to it, but also you don't kiss someone who's Just A Friend so tenderly on a Friday afternoon with junk food on the table in front of you while you watch a movie to celebrate passing all your exams.
And then Aizawa meets Eriko. Ide just watches as his best friend falls for this girl, and while he's happy for him he also can't help the ache in his heart.
But he knew that was going to happen eventually.
After all, Aizawa was always the first to pull away from a kiss, first to put his clothes back on, first to pull his hand away when they saw their group of friends when they were walking around after a date.
He can't bring himself to feel anything about the situation. He can't hate Eriko, she's genuinely so sweet, and she really loves Aizawa. And he can't blame Aizawa for the ache in his heart - he knew it was coming. Their relationship never had a future, and Eriko can give Aizawa the future he always dreamed of.
It takes some time to build their relationship back - but it's fixed with minimal effort. They fit in each other's lives perfectly, like puzzle pieces, but as friends this time, rather than lovers.
Ide's home is a safe space whenever Aiwaza needs some time to collect himself, and Ide can always go to Aizawa's when he needs a warm soup to warm him up. Eriko is always happy to have him over, and Ide's genuinely happy to see her too.
Ide's there at every big family event, so much so the kids just call him 'Uncle Ide'.
When they have to work late, Eriko always brings food for the both of them to the office.
They don't really talk about that side of their college days.
They did, once. With a few drinks in their systems, Aizawa was the one to bring it up.
"We were young and kinda stupid, we messed around and made some mistakes."
"Mistakes?" Ide asked. He wasn't angry, or at least he didn't seem to be. He seemed cold, analitycal even. Observant as always.
Aizawa knew he shouldn't've drank that much when he wanted to talk about that - Ide always held his drink better than he did, and now he was catching things Aizawa didn't mean to imply.
"That's not what I mean and you know-"
"And yet it is what you said."
Ide was fine. It had been a long time since he buried his romantic feelings about his best friend into his heart and moved on. He was happy, he was dating again, he was fine.
It didn't hurt to not be Aizawa's lover anymore.
But it did hurt when he dug up all his past feelings and called them a stupid mistake.
"I- I didn't mean it like that." Aizawa stumbled over his words, grabbing Ide by the arm as if he was afraid that the other man would fade away from his grasp if he didn't.
But Ide wouldn't. He couldn't leave even if he wanted to.
...
"I don't regret it, y'know." Aizawa said at the back of the taxi.
Ide wanted to play dumb, ask "What?" As if the conversation that they had hadn't been occupying his head since the first word left Aizawa's mouth. His silence seemingly prompted Aizawa to spill more.
"Any of it. - Maybe the time when I ate spicy food after drinking and you had to babysit me as I puked. But other than that... I'm glad that it happened."
Ide couldn't help but chuckle at the memory. That was not a fun time, he remembered.
"Yeah." He said finally. "Me too."
So yeah, they don't talk about that side of their college days.
But they're at peace with the past. Whatever happened, happened and it was good while it lasted, but the best thing out of it was their friendship which outlasted the romantic relationship.

for the ask game, let's switch things a bit up: Soichiro, Matsuda, Aizawa and Mogi
Tumblr media
Soichiro Yagami
Tumblr media
My opinion on this character: Man, poor dude. He was such a good person and all he got for it was pain.
OTP: Soichiro x Sachiko! I actually made something cute for them as an outline for Judas.
Platonic OTP: Soichiro x Matsuda. He’s such a good, patient mentor to poor Matsu!
Unpopular opinion: Soichiro was a good man who did his best. Stop with the “Soichiro Yagami’s A+ Parenting” tropes! It takes responsibility off Light’s shoulders and blames Soichiro for something he gave his life to stop, which I find honestly really shafts him a lot.
Something I wish was canon: Soichiro learning the truth right as he died of a broken heart. It would be so poignant. But I like the canon death, it doesn’t bother me.
Touta Matsuda
Tumblr media
My opinion of this character: Sweetie pie deserved better. What a precious optimist who did his very best. Amazing character arc.
OTP: Matsuda x Sayu. (And for those people who’re inevitably going to beat me up verbally over this, she’s 19 when he expresses affection for her and there’s no indication he had a relationship with her when she was a minor. You can debate if it’s healthy, but given that Matsuda by then was a close family friend, I frankly have no issue with it.) I also like Matsuda x Misa, but not as much as L x Misa. L challenges Misa as a person more than Matsuda does (sorry, Matsu).
Platonic OTP: Matsuda and Soichiro!
An unpopular opinion: Matsuda is not stupid. He’s very earnest and even smart, and quick-thinking as well. I think the reason everyone was so annoyed with him was that they were very high-strung in general given what they were dealing with.
Something I wish was canon: Matsuda becoming Sayu’s boyfriend after the show. He’s so much older than her, but I think they could bond and find solace in the wake of Light’s death.
Shuichi Aizawa
Tumblr media
My opinion on this character: He reminds me of Simon Peter. He’s the temperamental one who struggles with trust issues, and he’s the only member who’s married aside from Soichiro himself. I really like how L fired him so he could go be with his family, even if he was a jerk about it.
OTP: As he’s married, Aizawa x Eriko.
Platonic OTP: Aizawa and Ide!
Unpopular opinion: L did the right thing, even if it came off the wrong way to Aizawa. L struggles with loneliness and so he was pushing Aizawa away so he wouldn’t be forced to let him go later. That’s how I’ve always seen it. Oh, and he looks like Kramer from Seinfeld.
Something I wish was canon: More of his delightful baby! Please!
Kanzo Mogi
Tumblr media
Opinion of this character: ultimate malewife. You go girl.
OTP: I actually see this guy as entirely aro-ace!
Platonic OTP: Soichiro, Matsuda, and Mogi as the tag trio.
Unpopular opinion: His lack of dialogue gives him more personality than a bunch of dialogue would have.
Something I wish was canon: Mogi being a nanny. What is this man doing as a detective?!

Courtship - Part 3 (AjinWeek21/1)
Notes: So I decided to continue this for Ajin Week 2021! (although I was torn between making this a Sato fic cause you know. Hat.)
Day 1: Favorite character / summer break/ hat
Favourite character: Both Kei and Kou are among my favourite characters, Kei especially is one of my favourite protagonists of all time, and summer break, because this place during the sweltering time that is training camp. (fun! :D)
————————-
“Really?” Kei asks with growing annoyance as the vampire movie plays out on the screen in front of them. “Really?!”
“I can’t believe you haven’t seen that!” Kou defends himself, depositing the bowl of chips into Kei’s lap so his hands are free to adjust the volume.
“This is not what I had in mind when I agreed to…well, dating you.” Kei says, lowering his volume at the last three words that seem a little too foreign too pronounce.
“Why not?” Kou replies, “Movie nights are a super normal thing to do, not even for a date-“ He in comparison, has zero trouble adequately naming their current situation – “or with friends!” He smirked, which could never mean anything good: “Which you’d know, if you had any-“ Kou winces as Kei’s elbow rams into his side.
“I did have friends.” Kei grumbles through his teeth, stretching out his feet over the old and battered, but still quite comfortable couch. This is, surprisingly, afar more relaxing activity than he had initially anticipated.
Even if the movie is grating on his nerves.
“Why is everyone trying to befriend her?” he asks, exasperatedly. Bella Swan had made it perfectly clear that she was not interested in socializing from the moment she had arrived in her father’s rainy suburban town. And yet, in the first half an hour, not only had her childhood best friend shown up, she’d also been introduced to numerous classmates and faculty, and on top of that, was subtly encouraged to take a glance at a family of – vampire’s, that was his most likely prediction based on what he’d heard of the plot.
“Well, she’s new and people wanna get to know her. Nothing wrong with that.” Kou said diplomatically.
“Ugh.” Kei groans, and takes a sip of his coke. Eriko had always tried to make him watch these movies, which, if he was correct, were five in number, because apparently it was no enough to have a fourth movie. No, it had two be dragged out across two volumes. So far, he had been able to avoid it. Until training camp.
“Which you’d know, if you’d had-“
“Shut the fuck up.” Kei snaps, and the mood sours for a moment.
“Right, right, I’m sorry.” Kou says, after a beat of silence, and then his hand reaches over to grasp Kei’s.
“Is that really necessary?” Kei mutters, feeling his cheeks heat up. He prays that the darkness of the room, only lit up faintly by the TV, serves as enough cover.
“Well, it’s a date, right?”
“Stop saying that all the time.”
“Date. Date. Daaate.” Kou sing-songs, grinning at Kei knowingly.
The latter glowers: “Are you in elementary school?”
Kou laughs. He still doesn’t let go of Kei’s hand.
Kei feels his heartbeat quicken, ever so slightly, nervousness manifesting in the pit of his stomach. He chalks it up to the unfamiliar situation. After all, he really doesn’t know whether the movie will provide suitable entertainment for the next one and a half hours. There is no way it has anything to do with Kou.
At least, it shouldn’t.
“If you could choose between being a vampire and an Ajin, what would you pick?” Kou asks, out of the blue.
The movie had ended just a little while ago, a pointless two hours and six minutes of a supernatural romance that Kei couldn’t care less for. It was a little past ten, and they were not finished for a long while, apparently, if the cover for the second movie, blinking traitorously in Izumi’s streaming library, was anything to go by.
“Not this again.” Kei sighs, “Do you spend all day on these unlikely scenarios?”
“It’s that not unlikely.” Kou argues, “Come on, a few years back, you didn’t even know Ajin existed! And now you’re one!”
“Of course I knew they existed. It’s part of the school curriculum.” Kei deadpans, this particular lesson still rather unsettlingly fresh in his memory.
“Which you’d know if you’d gone to school.” He adds, acidly.
“Wow, harsh.” Kou pouts, “I did go. I just…dropped out. There’s a difference. Everyone knows that.” He mumbles.
“Keep telling yourself that” is on the tip of Kei’s tongue, but he swallows it down, if only to retain the peace. And perhaps because he would feel the tiniest bit guilty further prodding at that sore spot.
But school is something he does not want to think about for a good while again. The memory brings only pain. Betrayal from his classmates, from teachers, a jealousy- one that Kou would never be able to comprehend - on missing out on education that is a given for his former classmates.. A High School degree that he will never receive, if the government has any say in it, after all the years and effort, the hours of studying and revising he has put into it. A bleak future with all paths to prestigious medical universities blocked irreversibly. His only crime had been crossing that road that day. If only I could be reborn, Kei thinks miserably, then I could get a new chance. chance. He is in dire need of a new identity. Perhaps he can later guilt Tosaki into creating one for him.
“So circling back to the topic at hand, vampires.” he says, reluctantly.
“Heck yeah.” Kou agrees, excitedly, “So?”
“There are pros and cons on both sides.” Kei shrugs, “If you were a vampire, you wouldn’t be able to age and have a career, build a reputation. You’d have to get a new identity every few years. That sounds like a hassle. And don’t get me started on the…blood lust.”
The vampires and even humans in the movie had looked hungry in a completely different way whenever that topic came up. As though sucking your body’s circulatory system dry was desirable under any circumstance. Kei shuddered at the thought.
“You mean, you wouldn’t be able to build a family, live out your life with your friends, that kinda stuff?” Kou asks.
“I was referring to the important things, but I suppose.” Kei says loftily.
“Yeah, well, you’re wrong about that. Even vampires enjoy having relationships.” Kou argued.
“Debatable.”
“Bella seems pretty happy with the Edward guy.” his teammate emphasizes, “No matter if he’s a vampire or not.”
“But it is going to be a problem in the future.” Kei argues, “Honestly, she should have just stayed with Jacob and been done with it. It’s a suitable match, why put in any extra effort? She’s just going to grow old while he stays young forever.”
“Figures you’d go with the childhood best friend.” Kou mutters, flicking crumbs of his trousers.
“What?”
But Kou – strangely, for once in his life- doesn’t seem to haven an emergent need to elaborate further on the matter.
Kei probably should have said something a long time ago.
Perhaps he should have stopped Kou from starting the blasted second movie, but “Kei, it’s not that late! And how else will you know how it ends?” (Apparently, never was not a viable option.)
So here they are, sitting through another two hours of what Kou calls an “iconic classic” and Kei under his breath refers to as trash, but not the recyclable kind.
The cinematography is stunning, he has to admit begrudgingly, and the plot, albeit ridiculous, still manages to draw him in enough for him to forego his plans of turning the movie off several times, which is quite bothersome.
Well, fine then, Kei thinks to himself, at least now if Eriko badgers him about those movies again, he can give her a detailed review of every single logical error he has discovered so far.
He is considering starting a list, just so as to have some backup proof. His little sister’s education doesn’t have to suffer any more than it already had.
“Is she really going to sit around for months and wait for him to come back?” Kei complains, grabbing a fist full of popcorn from the bowl Hirasawa had made for them, “That’s a complete waste of time.”
“I don’t know, don’t you think some people are worth waiting for?” Kou threw in, giving Kei a knowing -sort-of-look that he couldn’t place.
It was the first sentence he had spoken in a while. Apart from his rambling monologue to get Izumi to join them a while prior when she came in to check if the streaming service was working.
“Did you see these movies already, Izumi-san?” Kou had asked and Kei surely hadn’t imagined the blush pinkening her cheeks.
“Oh, those? Just…once.” she’d replied, her voice sounding a little too high-pitched for that to be true, “It all seems fine, so I should get going-“
“Ah, already? Take a seat, take a seat!” Kou says generously, gesturing to the couch, “You need a break too, right?”
And Izumi did, albeit only tentatively on the edge. “I’ll be gone in a few minutes.” she promises.
She lied. Fifteen minutes later, she is still there and Kei doesn’t have the heart to kick her out, despite this being a a date, as he not so subtly communicated to Kou via verbal cues – all of which the other successfully ignored -but then, he bitterly thought, what chance did their pseudo-trial stand against Kou’s immortal woman of his dreams?
His thoughts screech to a halt. What does he even care what Kou thinks about either of them? It was all beyond ridiculous.
“It depends on how long you’re waiting for them.” Kei says, in response to Kou’s earlier question, “What about you, Izumi-san?”
“I think some relationships are worth preserving.” Izumi replies meaningfully, but right before she can say anything else, her phone goes off, the Caller-ID flashing with a familiar name.
“It seems Tosaki-san needs my assistance.” she says, barely concealing a wistful sigh, “Have fun you two.”
“He really needs to stop working you to the bone.” Kou complains.
Kei has the decency to feel guilty about the relief that settles in him when she leaves.
The motorcycle ride looks engaging. An activity Kei himself wouldn’t mind doing, seeing as there was zero risk involved to his safety with his newfound Ajin status.
As he verbalizes all of this, Kou gives him yet another of these knowing looks.
“Well, you were always one for motorcycles, weren’t you?” he says, tone bordering on smug.
Kei frowns. “Where did you get that idea from? I’ve only ridden one so far, but that was with Kaito.”
“I know.” Kou says, and then downs the rest of his coke.
“Refill?” he asks, holding out his hand for Kei’s glass.
“Sure.” Kei says, passing it over. He eyes Nakano skeptically, for any hint as to why his demeanor kept fluctuating.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks.” Kei cautiously takes the glass from him. Their fingers brush, lingering just a second too long to be casual. Kei notices how the tips of Kou’s ears redden and uses his momentary distraction to his advantage.
“You really hate that Jacob guy, don’t you?”
Judging by the look on his teammate’s face, he hit the nail on the head.
“I, uh, well hate is a kinda strong word.” Kou hesitates, stumbling over words, “He’s just not my favourite.”
“Really?” Kei asks, raising an eyebrow. In all honesty, he isn’t very interested in either of the characters, but psychoanalyzing Kou is what gives the evening its spice.
“Why is that so surprising?” Kou pouts.
“Because he’s just the same sort of muscle-brained idiot that you are.” Kei responds, gracing Kou with an exasperated look, before turning back to the movie.
“Oh.”
His words seemed to have had a profound effect on his teammate. Whatever sort of enlightenment had reached Kou, it had visibly brightened his mood.
“He is, isn’t he.” Kou says, with a small laugh.
“I don’t know why that is so surprising.”
“Guess I never thought of it that way.”
Which was exactly why it fit so well, Kei thinks to himself. Kou looks positively thrilled with the new discovery. As much as it pains to admit him, a lot remains about his teammate that he still doesn’t understand.
“I think he might be becoming my new favourite character.” Kou says, conspiratorially, sliding closer to Kei and slinging arm around him.
As the movie goes on, Kei starts to feel more and more tired. The comfortable atmosphere and the constant stream of voices from the TV serve to lull him a sleepy state. “Wake me up when they reach Italy.” he mumbles, the exhaustion of another day spent training finally catching up with him.
Kou mumbles an affirmative, and that’s where Kei’s memory cuts off.
The next thing he knows, someone is prodding at him from the side, instructing him to wake up.
“Fine, five more minutes.” Kei says, swatting the offending hand away.
He blinks as he comes too, shielding his eyes against the sudden brightness of the room.
The movie has ended, but even if hadn’t, Kei wouldn’t have been able to see much of the screen.
Not with Tosaki blocking their view.
“It’s almost 1 am.” he informs them through clenched teeth, “Get upstairs before I sever the internet connection.”
It’s a substantial threat. Substantial enough to briefly distract Kei from the fact that he had fallen asleep right on top of Kou.
“Fuck.” Kei swears under his breath, sitting up straight.
His teammate seems less perturbed.
“You missed the ending.” is all Kou has to say for himself, with a shit-eating grin.
(“It really is pointless.” Kei whispers, later that night, as they are both lying in Kou’s bed, a hair-brained decision that Kei blames his tiredness for.
“The whole being with a vampire. She can’t be, unless someone turns her into one, but that would be the epitome of a ridiculous clishé".
“…”
“Oh God, please tell me I’m wrong.”)

it’s 3:10 am and I have no life so I decided to mathematically document the shittiness of Death Note’s female representation
Disclaimer: Death Note is still my second favorite anime of all time and my third favorite TV show of all time (1 and 2 are Soul Eater and Friends, in case you were wondering). I appreciate most of its male leads and adore some of them. I don’t dislike any of the female characters in this show, even Misa. (Should I make a full post about why I like Misa? No. No, I shouldn’t. I’ll probably do it anyway.) Also, Naomi. Just...❤️Naomi.❤️
In preparation for this post, I binged the anime* for the [CLASSIFIED]th time and made a list of all its male and female characters in separate lists. A character’s inclusion on the list depends on whether they meet the following criteria:
1. They have a name that is spoken out loud at some point (alibis count; if they are only given a first name or a last name alone, that also counts);
2. They speak at least one line.
This allowed me to weed out most unimportant background characters as well as all the names written down in the various Death Notes. However, as you will see, some very minor characters still made the list.
*I’m just doing the anime this time, not the manga. I have and love the manga but didn’t feel like going through the whole thing for this. My doglike devotion to completely pointless research only goes so far, people.
Here are the male characters we encounter across all 37 episodes (in order of appearance, but not necessarily official introduction by name):
Light. Ryuk. Sudo. Ryo. Takuo Shibuimaru. Soichiro. Matsuda. Watari. L. Lind. L. Tailor. Mogi. Raye. Kiichiro Osoreda. Aizawa. Ide. Ukita. Kitamura. Demegawa. Koki Tanekabara. Gelus. Ooi. Takahashi. Kida. Higuchi. Hatori. Namikawa. Mido. Shimura. Aiber. Roger. Mello. Near. Mason. Larry Connors. Commander Rester. Eddie. Gevanni. Sidoh. Armonia Justin. Kal Snyder. Pedro Kollet. Dwhite Godon. Jose. Mikami. Matt.
Same criteria, female characters:
Sachiko. Sayu. Yuri. Naomi. Misa. Rem. Takada. Weddy. Yumi. Eriko. Nori. Lidner.
That’s 45 male characters and 13 female characters. If I did my sixth grade math correctly, that means 77.6 percent of the cast is male, compared to only 22.4 percent female. The women whose names are in bold are those whose involvement in the story hinges on her having a personal connection to a male character, either as a family member or a significant other/love interest. Yes, I did the math for that too. SIXTY-NINE POINT TWO PERCENT of the women in Death Note are heavily defined by their relationship to at least one man.
(Yeah, I know, 69. Shut up.)
Now, just for kicks, let’s narrow it down to only characters who appear and speak in more than one episode.
Men: Light. Ryuk. Soichiro. Matsuda. Watari. L. Mogi. Raye. Aizawa. Ide. Ukita. Kitamura. Demegawa. Ooi. Takahashi. Kida. Higuchi. Hatori. Namikawa. Mido. Shimura. Aiber. Roger. Mello. Near. Rester. Eddie. Gevanni. Sidoh. Pedro. Kollet. Godon. Jose. Mikami.
Women: Sachiko. Sayu. Naomi. Misa. Rem. Takada. Weddy. Yumi. Lidner.
That gives us 34 men and 9 women. 79.1% men, 20.9% women. 66.7% of those women are defined by their connection to a male character.
I haven’t even touched on all the other smaller, but still significant crumbs of sexism in Death Note, such as how the entirety of the ICPO meeting in Episode 2 is male. The Japanese NPA is intimately intertwined with the plot, yet we never once see a single female police officer.
Naomi Misora, apparently one of the FBI’s top agents, left her job to get married and (plan to) have kids.
Kiyomi Takada is said to be one of the most intelligent and powerful women in Japan, having graduated from a very prestigious university, yet the only time we see her in school is when she disrupts a lecture to have a relationship check-in with her man meat.
Adult!Sayu gets hit on, gets kidnapped, gets traumatized, then is forgotten for the rest of the series.
Rem throws her life away for love.
Takada agrees to throw away her core values and career for love.
Weddy’s cleavage.
Lidner’s cleavage.
Cosmé Misa.
It genuinely breaks my heart that a series I love so dearly, and that has played a significant role in shaping my morals and beliefs for almost half my life, is so cold, flippant, and downright disrespectful to my entire gender.
