By the time Carlos went through the previous year's exam sheets for the third time, TK had long since fallen asleep on his shoulder. Careful not to wake him up, Carlos shifted the paper in his left hand and the phone in his right to check his answers. 

“You're drooling down my shirt,” he mumbled gently, somehow hoping that his affection would follow TK into his dreams.

He glanced at his phone: almost midnight. Carlos blinked with heavy eyes, he had completely forgotten the time. No wonder TK had fallen asleep. His husband was very understanding when it came to Carlos's ambitions, but that was no reason to deprive him of sleep, especially since he was already taking up the bed. Carlos looked around with a twinge of remorse. To the left and right of him were books, copies, loose pieces of paper… it was a mess, and that was so not like him.

Sighing, he began to collect the sheets of paper with one hand, calling it a day. The exam was still two weeks away, but Carlos was nervous. Basically, he had no doubt that he would make it, that he had what it took to be a detective. Yet there was still this feeling of having to prove himself. To his father, first and foremost, but also to himself. A little to TK, too, if he was being honest. His husband had talked him into taking the path once he had openly considered it, and he had been exactly the person Carlos had needed all along the way, there was no doubt about that. "I know what you can do," he often said, a confidence he rarely displayed in his own endeavors. TK was no stranger to self-doubt, but only he knew that Carlos wasn't free of it either, on the contrary.

The phone interrupted his thoughts, vibrating as it announced a message. Carlos cast a quick glance at TK, the movement lolling TK's head to the side. He held his breath, and only when there was no sign of TK opening his long lashes did Carlos dare look at his phone.
