Portmanteau ship names in Gundam Wing fandom: a shitpost

(written in response to @kirinjaegeste ’s posts)

So here’s the thing.  While Gundam Wing fandom’s two-digit numerical ship system has a long history, I actually prefer either portmanteau ship names or three-digit ship designation (ex: 1x2x1).  This isn’t because I don’t like the two-digit system or because I'm trying to make a statement about my gay ships not having tops or bottoms.  It’s just for practical purposes.  While the two-digit system works fine if you’re looking at a site with ONLY Gundam Wing on it, a lot of sites (Tumblr included) host more than one fandom.  There are other fandoms I’ve been in that used two numbers with an x between to indicate Season/Series # x Episode #.  And there are several other fandoms using numbers for their ships, too...let me tell you, I did not know there were people who shipped Engines 3 and 4 from Thomas and Friends but I now have a fondness for Gordon x Henry.  With these two factors combined, it makes it hard to find things with just the two-digit numerical ships.  When I first went looking for ship stuff for Gundam Wing I used the Tumblr search bar and the two-digit ships and ended up with almost entirely irrelevant results.  I was not happy.

When I first posted about GW back in 2017 I used the ship name Troquat for 3x4x3 because I KNOW I saw トロカト on a doujin cover at some point and I assumed it would be acceptable to use that in the English-speaking fandom.  It was distinctive and easy to remember, and I stand by that name even if at least one other person laughed at me and said it looked like I came from a darker timeline.  That hurt, by the way.  :(  I settled for using three digits to indicate a ship because no one makes fun of it and it still gets the point across to my satisfaction.  I like three-digit and will probably continue to use it.  But portmanteaux are still an option that’s been mostly untapped in English-speaking GW fandom.

So, for your viewing pain pleasure, here are my proposed portmanteau ship names from a darker timeline (most popular ships are in bold; upper case on the second half of the portmanteau optional):

1 Heeduo.  Heelena or Heerelena (I think I’ve actually seen Heeriri used in English-speaking fandom, which is accurate to doujin ヒイリリ, but I hesitate to use that because Relena’s name in English-speaking fandom isn’t rendered as Ririna).  Fortunately, the two most-used ships for Heero make some decent portmanteaux.  There’s also HeeTro, HeeQuat, HeeWu/Heefei (katakana for that reads a bit like ‘Beefy’ 🥩 in Japanese actually...).  HeeZechs (we could also shorten that to Hechs (lol), or we could flip it around to get ZechsHee, which sounds very Zexy indeed).  HeeTreize/Heatrays ♨️ or maybe Heerenada?  HeeDoro/Heerothy?  Lot of possibilities here.  But I am personally offended that there is no character available to form the ship Hee-Man. 💪

2 Hilduo works well as a portmanteau because one has a ‘d’ at the end of their name and the other has a ‘d’ at the beginning, so they blend nicely.  It seems Wufei is quite popular with Duo after Heero and Hilde...  Wuduo?  That one sounds like I’m trying to say ‘wood’ in Japanese a la Cardcaptor Sakura.  Could go as Wuo, which sounds like ‘whoa’ so that’s neat.  Or my personal favorite Duofei, which I would definitely refer to as ‘Duffles’ for the hell of it.  How about Maxwufei?  Sounds like we get a lot of Wufei there.  As for Solo, I guess it’s either DuSolo or SolDuo.  There’s also DuQuat and DuTrowa/TroDuo.  Putting the ‘Du’ first makes everyone Duo is shipped with seem very French-ly masculine.  :3

3 My beloved Troquat (troquât means ‘swapped/traded’ in French, which is great because it basically implies they’re vers right there in the name).  Quatre and Trowa have a shared ‘tr’ at the end of one name and the beginning of the other, so they form the absolutely perfect portmanteau of Quattro...unfortunately it’s so perfect that it’s an actual common irl word, so you’ll come up with a lot of irrelevant results in Italian or some Audi adverts if you use it.  Could go with Quatrowa, but now your Audi adverts will be in Polish.  So Troquat works best, I think.  Other ships for Trowa might be Trofei (would jokingly refer to that as ‘Truffles,’ which I can enjoy all day just like silly ship names involving Wufei).  Maybe TroMiddie (this reminds me of Voldemort’s Muggle name.  Tomriddle, Tromiddie.  It also sounds like a form of dramedy that is particularly devastating: trauma+comedy).  UnTro/Trowune?  Maybe TroTro or Tro² if you’re shipping OG Trowa Barton with the teenager who stole his identity?  Who else could Trowa even be shipped with idk.

4 We already covered most of the popular ships for Quatre, but we’ve still got Dorothy, which would be QuaDoro/Quatrothy.  There’s the far more interesting Quadoroth, which sounds like the name of an evil wizard but from a different author.  Quatalonia works well as a portmanteau, but Dorothy isn’t often referred to by her family name.  For Relena we could do Quatrelena, which is a solid portmanteau with their whole names joined at the common ‘re’.  There’s Wufei, too, but I don’t know if Quatfei sounds better than WuQuat.  If you’re into father figure kink there could be some Quatrashid or Quatshid (which reminds me of Cait Sith)... and there is also the best ship, Quatrock!  It’s Quatre and his dear Sandrock.  🤖😽

5 WuMei and Wufeize/WuTreize and WuSally (Wully!  WOOLLY!! 🐑  I love Wufei ship names!) are pretty much all I’ve got left for Wufei pairings.  But can you imagine being the poor Wufei-and-Une-shipping bastard who has to say their ship name is Wune or Uwu?

6 Zechs and Noin don’t have a good portmanteau, and with their numerical designations being 6 and 9 I don’t think anyone would want to give it up anyway.  This one isn’t too bad for practical purposes; 6 and 9 aren’t nearly as common in fandoms as smaller numbers.

9  Salnoin.  It’s fine.  Perfectly serviceable.  Could be worse.  Reminds me of salmon.  🦈 (Yes I know that’s a shark, lay off.)  We could make that one Nally or Nolly instead I think.

13 Treizechs.  They blend together nicely because they share the ‘ze’.  Treizune is neat and comes with the added bonus of looking like someone trying to write ‘treason’ in a way that will get past AI censors.  All of his common ships are now covered, but I’ll throw in Quatreize for free since there’s some interesting compare/contrast between the two characters as leaders that could be explored.

I think I covered all the ships likely to feature Relena and Dorothy except the most important: ReleDor.  Which sounds like a place name from Tolkien verse.  Roaming over the bounteous hills and mysterious valleys of Reledor.  Shit yea.  Guess it could also work as Dorelena, but it’s not as cool imo.

My final entry here is for the excellent rarepair Rylvia, aka RelenaxSylvia Noventa, which I started shipping while working on a secret project that never saw the light of day.  I would have gone with the very elegant Sylena/Selena, but it’s so elegant that it’s an actual popular irl name and I’d never be able to sort for content for my ship that way.

→ Colgate posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun. They later made a post tagging Gong Jun, with a caption that began, “Do you believe in light?” (05:00, 511 kadian with the date)

→ KFC posted a commercial featuring Gong Jun.

→ Mengniu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun. (1314, kadian for “forever”)

→ The fake Zhang Mama account posted an essay where they forgot to edit “request” out of the title, revealing that someone was hired to write it. The essay was deleted and reposted with an apology. The entire essay was later found to be a patchwork of plagarized work originally from 2006. 

07-12 → LLD Fest day 12 prompt: One question you want the answer to.

→ #TheRealZhangZhehan, a tag created to combat Instagram-believers, trended on Twitter after a combined effort started to take the tag back from believers who had hijacked it. The tag continued to trend for the next two days.

→ Colgate posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun. 

→ Instagram-believers recieved a blind box they had ordered from the brand which contained photos from Zhang Zhehan’s cancelled concert (the metadata shows they were taken on 21-07-24) and a studio recording of his song 冰川消失那天 (aka Running To Meet You). I will not be linking the song, [here] are the lyrics. Fan Observations: At the end of the song, Zhang Zhehan says “你好吗?” (”Are you okay?”), a phrase that was speculated to be something of a code between him and Gong Jun in their social media posts. After Zhang Zhehan shared a bit of the song in a livestream on 21-08-03, it was speculated based on the lyrics that it was written for Gong Jun. This seems to confirm it.

07-13 → 11 months since 813.

→ LLD Fest day 13 prompt: A song you relate to Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun.

→ Hogan posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun advertising their limited edition Qixi shoes. (1129 kadian) This was followed by a commercial for the same product. Caption: “Draw love on paper, fold it into a plane and fly towards you. Adorn the side of the shoe with love, share it with you and come to you.” Fan Observations:   -  The caption for the photo ad opens with “浪漫开幕“ (”Romantic openings”), the same 浪 as Lang Lang Ding.   -  One shot near the end of the commercial looks very reminiscent of how Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan stood during a game in the Happy Camp livestream.  -  In the commercial, he says “跟我走吧” (”Come with me”), which he previously said in a vlog seemingly in response to Zhang Zhehan’s “带我走” (“Take me away”) from the 2020 BAZAAR interview. 

→ Zhang Zhehan trended on Twitter.

→ Dragon TV posted a preview for episode 4 of Go Fighting!.

→ Kangshifu posted three photo ads featuring Gong Jun.

→ Gong Jun posted four photos of himself wearing the Hogan shoes to his Xiao Hong Shu. Caption: “‘Took’ some photos ✌ A bit of colour but not much 😎”

→ Gudou Xingfan posted a short interview with Gong Jun about his Golden Blossom award. [translation here]

→ Louis Vuitton reposted their commercial featuring Gong Jun from 01-13 to their Instagram. They also included a photo ad of him in their story.

→ The Instagram posted five photos of “Zhang Zhehan” sitting in a conference hall wearing the brand’s merch. Caption: “Every smile is like a candy 🍬 It melts sweetly and defeats the monsters” Fan Observations:  -  There are signs of photoshopping around the hands. [1] [2] [3]  -  The print in the book is vertical as is used in Taiwan rather than horizontal as is used in mainland China. There are worries that this was done intentionally to set something up in the near future.

→ BEAST posted a teaser featuring Gong Jun blowing bubbles for their upcoming Qixi limited edition products. (1129 kadian) The caption includes the product line’s slogan, “Love’s cure Love’s new birth”

→ Hogan posted three behind the scenes photos of Gong Jun from their new ad campaign. (1129 kadian) Caption: “Zoom in on the tidbits of love and discover the sweet details ... A romantic screening for you.”

→ Xie Yihua and co. posted a picture of “Zhang Zhehan” blowing bubbles. Interesting timing...

→ Kangshifu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ Hsu Fu Chi posted a video of their irl anniversary event, with the caption including “@Gong Jun Simon sent birthday wishes to Hsu Fu Chi ‘30 years of achievement, 30 years of glory’!” Gong Jun’s face is plastered all over the event, but he himself is conspicuously absent from the video. He did not acknowledge the post in any way.

→ REAL1640′s new photobook arrived for some buyers, some of whom leaked parts of the five hours of Word of Honor behind the scenes footage included with it. I won’t be linking it, as he has explicitly asked people not to spread it further. Some highlights in text form:  -  The posing for the “there’s a light on you” scene was inspired by the movie Your Name, suggested by Zhang Zhehan. Gong Jun has since said mulitple times that this is his favourite movie, and his Weibo header is a screenshot from it.  -  Gong Jun casually called Zhang Zhehan baobei.  -  Gong Jun made a very loud “muah!” while rehearsing the poison sucking scene. (Uncertain from the angle if lips touched skin, though we have other footage showing it did happen in the final take.)  -  Many dirty jokes were made (shocker 😅)

Fan Observation: There was a bit of a conspiracy theory last year about Poo-Poo the Panda... Take it with a grain of salt.

→ Danny (one of Xie Yihua’s people, involved in the girlfriend rumors) posted professional photos of a football game with a blurry figure on the sideline who is supposedly Zhang Zhehan. Many have commented that the figure looks different anatomically and has much worse posture than Zhang Zhehan. A group photo from the game was also shared which includes a frankly very ugly person that they’re claiming is him.

→ Gong Jun appeared in a livestream for Fresh, wherein he talked with an Olympic medalist. [recording]

→ Colgate posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ The official Weibo of China’s firefighting force posted a video of a firefighter singing a song requested by a follower: Heart Towards the Sun, originally by Zhang Zhehan.

→ Gong Jun’s studio posted six photos from the Fresh livestream. Caption: “Simple and pure white, embellished with fresh green. Boss @Gong Jun Simon uses color to convey freshness and vitality, and always stay in the best condition! !” Fan Observation: While not exactly the same, the outfit looks very similar to the one he wore for his birthday livestream which had some candy to it. It’s interesting that this caption would call attention to it.

→ Bingdi, a CP fansite, paid for a billboard in Hengdian to display a picture of Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun to celebrate the second anniversary of the pool fanmeet. It was scheduled to stay up until 07-30.

at this point u just ignore him (i feel bad for him i feel the pain tbh)

he also has like just the two of us the song playing in the background just bc hes very like always needing a lot of everything tbh

so yall r watching that and one might think he is very stoic doesnt like movies n shit but theres two ways this can go:

hes either sleeping or hes hyperactively paying attention

for this movie in particular he becomes overly attached n when the like house complex comes crashing down n im p sure there is like a scene where shes getting tortured? idk i havent watched the movie in forever

ok anyways he literally gasps, kinda jumps, n he cries a lot.

he kinda just has like tears streaming down his face n then like his head is in ur lap and ur stroking his hair and its honestly rly funny 😭😭

n then theres the scene where its the meetup face reveal irl and oh boy does kenma cry at that (you do too tbh)

ok so after that hes prob either heartbroken or out cold. if hes out cold, baby im sorry but ur not going anywhere

when he sleeps he doesnt wake up until its like 3 pm istg-

ugh but he also loves building shit

like constructing chairs n desks n he just lowk loves engineering its just not a big thing more like a side hobby bc he doesnt have the energy for doing that shit all the time

kenma has watched all the barbie movies. its canon, furudate told me himself

he went up to me one day knocked on my garage n went “hey elle i heard u love kenma kozume, well im hear to tell u that hes watched all the barbie movies” n then he disappeared <33

ok but fr thats just a hc of mine anyways so yall be watchibg it

and hes obvi very sucked in

and then theres like the betrayal scene

n he gasps so loud his popcorn w extra butter n light seasalt n extra cheese w a side of HI-C fruit punch almost spills

that order is also canon.

and ur like “kenma baby r u ok?” while laughing ur ass off lowk

n hes like “yeah yeah im fine stfu now pls”

like just bc u said pls doesnt make it better but i see u, choosing barbie over us 🤨🙄 can relate tho

finally the movie ended n now yall both feel very empty. so what do yall do? by this point its like 4 in the morning

so the only logical answer is to play otome games, episode, animal jam, n the winx fairy rp game thing
