Epes Sargent
Artist: John Singleton Copley (American, 1738-1815)
Date: c. 1760
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, United States
Description
John Singleton Copley, America's most important colonial painter, was born in Boston of Irish parents. In 1748 Copley's widowed mother married Peter Pelham, a painter and engraver. Copley's stepfather probably gave him some art lessons but died when Copley was only 13. In later years the painter claimed he was self–taught.
Copley, who was extremely observant, presumably learned about art largely by watching other English–trained painters who were working in the New World and by studying engravings imported from Europe. Much more important was his innate ability to record details objectively and to suggest character. Gilbert Stuart would later say of the uncompromising realism in Copley's Epes Sargent, "Prick that hand and blood will spurt forth."
About 70 years old when he posed for Copley, Sargent had dropped out of Harvard College to enter business in his native Gloucester. After the death of his first wife, this prosperous merchant and shipowner married a rich widow from Salem. Copley's portrayal shows him nonchalantly leaning on a marble pedestal as a symbol of prestige; since carved stone monuments were rather rare in the colonies, this imaginary device must be borrowed from European prints of potentates.
Such penetrating likenesses made Copley the best–paid artist in colonial America. By shipping some of his canvases to London for criticism, Copley soon became known in England.

The first time Slick's taunting didn't fall on stubbornly deaf ears, Dogma ended up splitting his knuckles open.
It had been a strange affair. He knew how to throw a punch just as well as hitting a target in the shooting range. Had thrown perfectly good punches during long sparring sessions, even. But he supposed there was a great big difference between calculated practice, and just swinging a fist to catch his verbal aggressor in the teeth.
Whatever the case, the medics had been annoyed with him. Rightfully so. It had been an unnecessary wound during another full house night. One he inflicted on himself by aiming for that incessantly aggravating bully's face.
But it had felt good. Little gods did it feel good. That sudden taste of control that he hadn't had the pleasure to have before...
He understood then, why Tup's occasional response to malicious taunts was to hit first and ask questions later. Sometimes ignoring them just didn't work. Most times talking didn't either. And how frustrating it was that it'd taken him that long to fully get that...
But in all honesty, he'd rather not think about his twin at all. Not after what he'd seen and heard in Olly's cam footage. He hadn't been ready to think about just how little Tup the 501st thought of him. Not right then at least.
The moment for that would come one day.
That day Dogma had simply thought about the stunned look on Slick's face, as the shabuir fell on his shebs and glanced up at him with eyes gone wide and a torrent of blood cascading down his split lip. The momentary confusion had been followed by the stark realization of what happened, as Dogma hissed a warning he hoped he wouldn't have to repeat ever again.
"Stop calling me Dog."
And the most spectacular part about it all? Slick hadn't even been upset at getting sucker punched in the face. He'd grinned. Teeth stained with blood and devilish glint in his dark eyes. Looking up at him as if he'd just witnessed something of an extraordinary nature.
And maybe he had. Maybe he'd seen the moment where Coruscant finally broke what was left of that clueless and frightened shiny he'd been on Kamino. The pieces that Krell hadn't already pulverized into fine dust.
"So there's hope for you after all. You might just survive this hellhole, little sheb'ika~"
From there on out the teasing was just that. Teasing. No longer did Slick try his patience just to see if it was possible to get a proper rise out of him. He'd effectively earned the most rebellious clone in the Guard's respect. His protection and brotherly affection as well.
Surprisingly, he hadn't been as disturbed about this outcome as the old Dogma would have been. But then again that same clone was naught but a fool who hoped for a galaxy that was far too unrealistically idyllic.
The new Dogma knew better. Had much lower expectations and stronger walls to keep others out unless they properly earned his respect. It's what kept him alive in the end.

hi! I’m getting into the fandom and I was wondering if you have any comfort interviews/podcast eps etc? Or just longish ones that I can listen to while folding laundry :) ty!!!
hello! Welcome aboard! They haven't done a whole load of podcasts but Carl appeared on the Distraction Pieces Podcast in 2016 and that was an amazing interview. 22 Grand Pod has several interviews with people around the band, including Roger Sargent and members of Babyshambles, as well an episode with John. There's several chunks of the lockdown livestream they did here. The recent Louis Theroux episode with Peter is well worth a watch. They have done several radio interviews of late as well, though I am terrible at remembering which networks - I might get @suchasinistergame to help out there as her memory for British radio shows is much better than mine. In terms of comfort interviews you can't beat their first Gonzo appearance, and this, that is known as the 'buffalo' interview. In terms of long interviews with Peter there's this one but he wasn't in the best place then. If you haven't read Carl's book, there is an audiobook version that he narrates himself and you can't beat that for a good listen. If anyone has suggestions please add. x

You know, there's something I don't about is that, how did Morrigan know that Chise is going to go to Sargent mansion? Does she knows Chise gonna be there or perhaps Morrigan knows something about the Dragon too.
This is a very interesting conversation, because we can go to the TAMB lore or the actual myth of the Phantom Queen. Maybe both?
Considering that she still sensed Chise when she offered the mistletoe in S1, I assumed she went to the Ainsworth house first after feeling her presence there (or maybe she already knew). I'm not really sure if the magic of an ancient Cait Sith was strong enough to hide the college from the eyes of a god, but we can be for certain that Morrigan was actually following Chise closely.
But then in the actual myth of The Morrigan, it has been stablished that she has the power of prophecy/divination and is able to see into the future to predict the outcomes of battles and other events. And in the newest ep, she already knew that Chise would transform into a dragon, the beast that simbolyzes the borderlands (or paganism) and hostility.

I think the people who are upset at Lucy need to understand that she actually is in the early stages of her career and is trying to find the path that is best for her.
She got into the Lapd later than most rookies (except Nolan), and there is no way she was ever going to get a Golden Ticket to progress her career.
If we look at Lopez, who was a TO before detective, these career paths aren't quick progresses and with Lucy not getting younger I get why she wants to progress with something she loves and is good at.
I just don't think it's fair were asking her to give up her career for Tim when he has already progressed twice in his career from TO to Sargent.
They can have it both.
Tim wants her to be happy and like Tim being at a desk won't make him happy Lucy staying in patrol won't make her happy.
The Rookie does relationships so well, and last week tumblr was so depressing with the negativey when they absolutely spoiled us in this week's eps.
They can have her to do detective work without undercover work for awhile FYI

Hello hello hello my lovely little stars!Welcome back to another episode of:
APHALLY OBSESSED!
YOUR new favorite "daily radio show" in which your host, Aphelion (That's me!) tells you all about music they're ACTUALLY OBSESSED with!
Today's episode is gonna be a little bit different. I haven't done one of these in a little bit and that's because I'm going through sort of a music funk. That meaning: Music is a bit overstimulating and overwhelming for me and I just haven't had something I really like come to mind.
I'm also going through HUGE writer's block. I'm very burnt out. So it may take me a bit to get back to our regularly scheduled programming. HOWEVER, because of this I've decided to add a NEW segment to this show!!!!!!
Aphelion's Absolutely Amazing Album Recommendations!!!!
Or, AAAAR for short! (Name is subject to change)
In this segment, I will be recommending three different albums or EPs for your listening pleasures! It will not get TOO much of a personal story behind it, but they WILL all be genuinely one I like (Which is rare!!! I don't listen to albums!)
The albums for today are:
AQUARIUM CITY by Louie Zong
Drones by Muse
Jubilee by Japanese Breakfast
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
AQUARIUM CITY
This album actually just came out TODAY (Friday, July 26th, 2024)
I just finished listening to it and of course, it's amazing! Louie Zong never misses.
It is self described as "Masayoshi Takanaka flavor" city pop album. This seems to add up as it has mych very funk / electro-funk influence. This album really evokes a summery island vibe. If you like city pop, future funk, electro r&b or electro jazz, this may be for you. It's mostly instrumental but contains some vocal snippets throughout the tracks. The most vocal song would be Swim With Me.
Louie Zong also makes great use of an iconic sample from the song "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited in Track 3: Tuna Turnpike. I'm sure there's many other samples of which I can't identify currently. Especially probably from Masayoshi Takanaka, who I'm sure I've heard the songs of but do not know the names 😅
There's only 8 songs, and the album tops out at 24 minutes and 7 seconds long. This is closer to what some would call an EP so you should be able to listen to it fairly quickly!
Drones
This is my current favorite Muse album, finally growing on me and taking the top spot from The 2nd Law.
Muse also rarely has missed and I feel like this is one of their best albums quite honestly. It's a progressive rock concept album about soldier going from being an indoctrinated "Drone" in the military, to a Defector. Despite being an English rock band, the album includes heavy critiques of the U.S military in the song, especially the Obama administration and the use of drones in bombing civilians in the middle east.
It has two tracks that are mostly vocal snippets, [Drill Sargent] and [JFK] which perfectly leads into the songs that follow them. The final and title song, Drones, includes music from "Missa Papae Marcelli" by renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. With Matt Bellamy singing over-top it in the final minutes of the song, expressing the soldier's grief at the loss of everything and everyone he loved, it is truly brilliant. Having said that, my favorite song on this album has to be Reapers.
The album is 12 tracks long and clocks in at 52 min 42 sec. This is the longest album on the list :)
If you like rock and critiques of the military, go check it out!
Jubilee
Japanese Breakfast's 3rd album, this time much more joyful than the previous two, which were very much about the grief of. This album is like a dream pop...well...dream! It's a somewhat similar in vibe to AQUARIUM CITY in its use of instruments with synthesizers, funky bass lines, and an overall 80s pop vibe. So I guess that is the vibe today. But it's very different from that album, I swear.
The album seems to mostly be about love. A love story in fact. Just being in love with someone and all it entails. From falling hard, to needing to distance yourself from the person to be healthy.
I would say this album is one of the least electronic of the three, but correct me if in wrong. We get a lot of sweet and soft vocals from lead singer Michelle Zauner accompanied with what I think to be live electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums. They make great use of dissonance in the album to provide that dreamy feel as if looking back on a memory.
My favorite song from this album is currently the 2nd track: "Be Sweet"
This album has 10 songs and is 37 minutes and 3 seconds long.
✧˖ °. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁‧₊˚ ☾. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁˖°✧
As always, I listen to these on Spotify, but you can listen to these albums anywhere you find music!

Do the other CPD cast have more bargaining power now that both Jesse and Tracy are (soon to be) gone? I wouldn't be surprised if Patrick Flueger is the next to go (also wouldn't mind a Sargent Atwater in the future) but it would be so hard to continue storylines with Marina without him. I feel like they would have to write them both off like what fire did with Kara after Jesse Spencer left. They didn't feel there was much story to tell with her after he left and I feel it would be similar with Kim without Adam.
I'm not sure! Negotiations are all a pretty individual process and without being in the room, I can't really say what leverage any of them have. PD especially has kind of surprised me (Jason with an EP credit when no other actors in One Chicago even have producer credits, I don't think) so it all depends on what they value and what actors push for as they negotiate.
Honestly, I've thought Paddy would be next to go for years. I thought he'd be next to go even before Jesse and Tracy left. Maybe he's good to stay, but I'll say that news of his departure will never shock me.
I actually think I disagree with your Kim/Sylvie comparison. I was talking about this recently, and I think (should they have to) Kim and Kevin are the best pairing to kind of rebuild the show around. They work so well on screen and they would have flexibility in storylines since they aren't paired romantically to each other. It would be like the story coming full circle with the OG patrol partners being veterans in the evolution of the unit. I don't know how they'd write Adam out if he wanted to go. Like most exits of that nature, there wouldn't be many great options and there would be a lot of really, really bad ones. Good thing it's all hypothetical. That said, if I were tasked with completely rebuilding the show after an exit, Kim would 100% stay and she and Kevin would be the foundation.

Misty Lanes "Misty Lanes"2017
Misty Lanes is the solo project of Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer, Steven W. Schouten. Launched in 2017 with his self-titled album, Misty Lanes is known for its reverberating guitars, punchy drums, dreamy organ melodies, and delicate vocals, reminiscent of late 1960s bands like The 13th Floor Elevators and The Kinks. His upcoming album, Colourless Green Ideas, was inspired by Noam Chomsky’s phrase, sparking a reflection on “art for art’s sake.” The album explores a wide range of sounds—from psychedelic rock to baroque pop—crafted over several years in home studios and mixed in 2022. Schouten embraces the raw, "colourless green" essence of initial demos, elevating his production while staying true to the spirit of the 1960s icons like Brian Wilson and The Kinks....~ Credits Steven W Schouten - Vocals,Guitar,Keys Arthur Dazos - Guitar Amy Flanagan - Bass Sam Vallellanes - Drums Kat Harley - Keys & Percussion Tracklist Misty Lanes (Intro) 01:11 The Sargent's Last Straw 02:16 Dragged Unwillingly 03:06 Change In Season 04:03 Humble Melody 03:26 Reach Out 04:16 Leisure Coast Limousine 01:39 Learn To Pretend 03:28 Evaporations 03:28 Long Amber Mist 02:45 Splash 1 (13th Floor Elevators Cover) 04:15

Misty Lanes "Colourless Green Ideas"2024
Misty Lanes is the moniker for the solo recording project of Sydney based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, engineer and producer, Steven W. Schouten. Beginning in 2017 after releasing his self-titled album, Misty Lanes has become defined by reverberating guitars, punchy drums, dreamy organ melodies and delicate vocals that embody the soul of cult-classic late 1960s bands such as The 13th Floor Elevators and The Kinks. The idea for Misty Lanes’ new album came about after Steven W. Schouten stumbled on a sentence — “Colourless Green Ideas Sleep Furiously” — a grammatical yet semantically nonsensical phrase by American author/linguist, Noam Chomsky. The phrase got Steven thinking about how we are always searching for meaning in things but not everything needs meaning and can just exist — “art for art’s sake”. This idea was the driving force behind Misty Lanes’ forthcoming sophomore album, Colourless Green Ideas, with the record being an eclectic collection of songs that explores a plethora of sounds and sub-genres from psychedelic rock, baroque pop, outsider folk, krautrock, funk infused garage-rock and more. The album was written, recorded and pieced together between 2016-2021 in different home studios before Schouten finished up the mixing in 2022. A long time coming since Misty Lanes’ 2017 self-titled album, Colourless Green Ideas sees Steven Schouten levelling up his songwriting, mixing and production, with new instruments such as his Mellotron Micro appearing all through the record. Both the songwriting and the production of the album nods to 1960s artists such as Brian Wilson, Billy Nicholls, The BeeGees, The 13th Floor Elevators and The Kinks. Schouten thoughtfully tries to stay true to the rawness of his ideas, which he calls “colourless green” — the naive first demo, which always captures the initial feeling of a song’s idea but is almost impossible to recreate in the studio environment. ....~ Tracklist Introducing... 01:05 And Here We Are 04:46 The Glorious Ones 04:01 Get Down 02:23 Would You Believe? 04:16 Unanimism 03:44 The Body Electric (Rise/Fall) 01:36 In The Dark 03:52 A Guardian Angel Makes A Small Breakfast 03:39 Metronome Heart 04:29 The Healing Door 02:16
