i've hit the last episode that i can recall watching in the mid/late 2000s, and my fledgling theory is really taking form. okay, bear with me. i have a theory that kazuha was only created after gosho toyed with but fairly quickly discarded the idea of a love triangle with shinichi, heiji and ran. i got the idea from this person who made a post that i love, showing shinichi at least fearing ran falling for heiji at first. in order to seal off that route (and add another dimension to the way heiji and shinichi are two sides of the same coin, gosho instead introduces kazuha as heiji's childhood friend love interest. but it's so one-sided!

kazuha's introduction has her embarrassing herself by assuming that ran is the kudo that heiji keeps talking about, and metaphorically peeing all over his leg while glaring at ran. it's very obvious that's she' jealous, but heiji takes no notice. but hey, maybe he's just not love savy. but then the four of them meet up again, kazuha is still carrying an obvious torch for heiji, and then they have heiji compare the two of them to brothers and sisters when matching clothing in japan is very couple coded. that's either him being so thick as to be unbelievable as the savvy detective that he is, or him lowkey indicating that he's not interested. he's also very quick to anger with her in a way that does read like sibling fighting. and then the above exchange happens.

kazuha is very obviously flustered and heiji does not give a fuuuuuck. even with all manner of writing trope goggles on, i cannot read this as him being romantically interested but not knowing how to process it or whatever. this is a guy who is aware that his female friend has a crush on him and he finds it to be mildly troublesome.

The stars tell us our future. They’re rarely correct, but yet there they are, blathering on, night after night. Welcome to Night Vale.

Cecil has started to hear the voices of the delta flight 18713 passengers too. He hears them except when he talks to Carlos.

It makes it hard for him to report but also allows him to hear Doug Biondi finding the commune and declaring that he can lead them into NV. He also hears them all creating makeshift weapons before everything suddenly goes quiet.

During the brief quiet Cecil tells us that Sheriff Sam has ordered all passages into and out of NV to be blocked including the dog park.

The Pilot speaks through Cecil, detailing that those who can hear them have been chosen to become part of the cult and those who cannot will be destroyed.

Cecil invites Carlos into the studio to block out the voice of The Pilot which as Charles Rainier said allows The Pilot to control people. He has Carlos handcuff to his desk to try and prevent him for hurting Carlos, who cannot hear the voices and therefore would be targetted for destruction. He also has Carlos promise to run if he's controlled and breaks free and tries to hurt him.

The 18713 still manage to get into NV and begin attacking the unmoving traffic which is still being blocked off.

The people Cecil can hear includes two teenager boys who are dating but still in that awkward first time and everything is wonderful stage, a woman who regrets not going to a job interview for a job she wouldn't have liked but which would have paid well, a woman teaching her young son Benny about the beauty of nature, a middle-aged man talking about the time he went to New Orleans to see alligators to another middle-aged man - however not amongst them is Amelia Anna Alfaro whom Cecil believes could solve their current issues.

The high school baseball team has tryouts on Saturday, the Library is doing open mic poetry nights on Tuesdays at 7 and the Opera House is extending it's run of Verdi’s 2 Fast, 2 Furious, starring Renee Fleming and Brynn Terfel through the end of the month.
