the ages of shameless characters does nothing but drive me crazy, so I'm activating some detective skills to figure them out throughout the seasons. also - im ignoring the years or times that the seasons came out, just going by what the show says.
First off: Mickey - bday is 10 August 1994
Season 1: 16, because...
he's not in it much, he doesn't speak much, but we know two things - he's a teenager and he's under 18 since he goes to juvie. He's in juvie for some part of three seasons, so I think it's safe to put him at 16.
Season 2: 16 for a bit, then 17, because....
it's now summer, and Mickey comes out of juvie. I think he turns 17 that summer, because when he goes back in, people are wearing coats more so I assume it's getting colder, so it's past august.
Season 3: 17 for half, 18 for the other half, because...
it's summer at the start, so Mickey's been in juvie for like 6/7 months. he's still 17, because he didn't go to prison at any point. by the time he marries Svetlana, I think he's 18. I don't know how old you have to be to get married in Illinois, but I'll say 18 because American laws confuse me more than anything else. either way, again, people are wearing warmer clothes around the time he marries her, so he must be 18.
Season 4: 18, because...
it's winter, the whole way through. There's no way it's the next year, since Ian is still underage according to Mickey (altho there's a possibility he meant under the drinking age of 21, but I don't think so). So Ian's been gone for a few months, maybe like 5 since it could be Jan/Feb and he must have left Autumn time. Therefore, Mickey's 18. The whole time. Summer hasn't come, so his birthday hasn't passed.
Season 5: 19, because....
it's summer for the first part. Late summer, since the last half is in wintery time based on everyone's coats. We can assume that Mickey has his birthday either between season 4 and 5 or right at the beginning of season 5. So maybe he's 18 for like 5 seconds. But for the majority and the end, he must be 19.
Season 6: 19/20, because...
he's only in it for one scene (diabolical). I can't tell what the season is really, because there aren't many coats being worn at the start, and then loads at the end. It seems unreasonable that a whole spring and summer have been skipped, doesn't it? although, maybe it's possible. There are also some days when it seems really hot and some where it looks cold, so I have no idea. I don't know what the weather's like in Chicago, sorry. So he's either 19 or 20 when we see him. Most likely 20. Either way, he went into prison when he was 19, unless the trial was really long and lasted from winter to august, which I doubt.
Season 7: 21 (when he appears), because...
we have two episodes (again, very sad). it starts in the summer based on the t-shirts without jackets everyone wears. by the time ep 10 and 11 hit, it's colder. it's hard to tell at the end, since they're at the border or approaching the border and the further south you go the hotter it gets, and it's very sunny when mickey goes across. If season 6 really is that winter and they skipped the summer (which now makes more sense), it's the following summer, going into autumn. so, august has probably passed by the time we see mickey. so he's 21 now.
Season 8: 21, 22 by the end (even tho we don't see him), because...
no mickey (rude). we can still assume his age based on the seasons and other characters. it's summer again! I'm guessing it's the year after?? since it looked like season 7 was approaching autumn? that also means Ian and Trevor were dating for around a year, and I didn't realise it was so long to be honest. anyway, if it's summer again, at some point throughout mickey turns 22 (alone, in Mexico).
Season 9: 23, because...
one scene with mickey! it's still summer, the same summer as before I think, because there's no way the Gay Jesus thing lasted a full year. it looks like it's a direct continuation from season 8. by the last ep, Ian is wearing a hat and an undershirt under the prison uniform, so it's autumn-y time. so, mickey's either already 23 when we see him, or about to turn 23. by the end, he's definitely 23.
Season 10: 23 at the start, 24 by the end, because...
it's summer when Ian comes out of prison. I'd put it at early summer, since Ian says it's been less than a year of being in prison. so at the start, mickey's still 23. by the wedding, it's 'supposed to snow', so I guess it's full on winter. so august is passed, mickey is 24, and finally had his bday when he's with Ian.
Season 11: 24 at the start, 25 at the end, because...
summer again at the start based on all the t-shirts. early summer, because by ep 10, mickey goes swimming or does something in the pool, because I'm not convinced he can swim, which you aren't gonna do in the autumn/winter, right? by the last ep, there are more coats, and it's their anniversary so it's 'supposed to snow', so it must be winter time. so he's 24 at the start, 25 at the end.
In conclusion, Mickey is way younger than he seems (im not talking about Noel, he looks the age he's meant to be, he just seems older). Also, Gallavich has been together for 9 years.
Let me know if you disagree with any of this, I think I'll do Ian next! I don't know if this was obvious to everyone else and I'm just slow, but this is gonna help me loads when I'm figuring out weather seasons and ages for fics lol.
Shameless needs to deal with its shitty timelines. It was much better at consistency in the earlier seasons.

The Untamed liveblog, eps. 33-38
Didn’t post a liveblog yesterday to avoid possible spoilers in the replies, so here it is now.

Before I proceed, here are my guesses as to the identity of the mysterious flute player: 1) Guangyao, the most obvious candidate 2) Xue Yang 3) idk, a new character 4) Guangyao is a red herring. The real villain is Nie Huaisang because that's funny
Relieved that WWX experienced the 16 years too. I was afraid he was regained consiousness straight from the moment of his "death" of whatever it was, so LWJ would be 16 years older with him which would have made the romance VERY awkward.
The room scene is beautiful, but one thing I particularly appreciate about it is that finally, probably for the first time in the show, these two are allowed time alone together in safety and relative privacy, and the scene can organically develop into a tender private moment that isn't for the camera to see or show.
"I must not reveal my identity" says WWX, who is dressed almost exactly like 16 years ago
Oh god I still can't tell apart the two young Lan disciples.
Switched to the subtitles from Viki. Unfortunately, they need to be resynced manually every time, and that, for some reason, messes up the file's internal subtitles. Ah well, I don't know Chinese anyway, and now the English subtitles actually say accurately what the characters call each other.

This show is too multi-faceted. I'm constantly going "This is my favorite part of the show: the sweet romance. No, this is my favorite: the ghosts and WWX being a cool necromancer. No, this is my favorite: the family drama. No, this is my favorite: clan politics. No, this is my favorite: WWX with kids." and it just keeps going in circles.

And now it's an action movie where the hero and the villain exchange a whole spiral of "No, I outsmarted you first" and drop one-liners every minute. Hilarious
The kids watching two zombies punch each other through a window like a football match on TV, I'm crying
Kids: "Don't you think Light Bearing Lord is good?" WWX internally, with a dreamy smile on his face: "Haha what they're asking ME if I think the love of my life is 'good'? * Added after the episode: If this kid is actually Yuan and he feels this way because they're both his dads I'm gonna scream I WENT BACK TO EPISODE 1 AND THE SUBTITLE SAYS 'LAN YUAN'. TIME TO SCREAM I GUESS. I KNEW THIS NAME COMBINATION SOUNDED FAMILIAR Did LJW get beaten for bringing him in, then? Did he spend the first three years raising him? I checked the subtitles and the name Yuan is written with different characters but that's probably fine? I doubt LWJ ever asked WWX how his son's name was written, or even if he knew, he could have wanted to protect the kid's identity - he's Lan and not Wen, after all If this is true then WWX has the funniest and most valid excuse for being an absent father. Sorry I missed your entire childhood and adolescence, kid, I was literally dead the whole time But also, if this is true, why didn't LWJ bring it up immediately DAMMIT I WAS PLANNING TO GO TO BED AND NOW I WANT TO SEE THE FAMILY REUNION ASAP God, in the light of this, the silence spell scene in ep 2 becomes even funnier. The more I know about these characters, the better it becomes. LWJ's silent stare at JC, apparently, meant "Look how well I raised WWX's son. Must I also raise his nephew, since you are clearly unfit for the job?" Involving kids, especially other people's, in your powerplays is shitty, but the scene is fucking hilarious. Anyways if this ends up being a giant coincidence and the kid is given so much focus for no or some other reason you're NOT allowed to laugh at this paragraph

God, this feels like... idk any Celebrimbor/Annatar fanfic lmao. I'm in pain. Let me guess, people write very painful fics about these two right. Fuck. I'm 21 minutes in, is this going to last the entire episode aaaaaaa
Fuck. Well how am I supposed to sleep after this. This episode didn't even make me cry once, it's not that type of bad thing. And not the type where something is so brutal I shield my mind because I prefer to pretend that level of pain can't exist. It's just diabolically designed to be maximally fucked up.

The Untamed (陈情令) Review: Ep 21
!!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!!
Previous episode review: 1 and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16,17, 18,19, 20.
Some quality Yunmeng Jiang Siblings Fluff now that WWX is back from the dead. The teary reunion! The hugging! WWX’s (bittersweet on hindsight) promise that the three of them would never be parted again! :):):)
I have to bring up NHS randomly bursting in on WWX and telling him how worried everyone was in looking for him, ESPECIALLY LWJ and JC. Hey, NHS, why did you mention LWJ first? Are you secretly a WangXian shipper too? Hahaha.
All the pining and estrangement btw WWX and LWJ was just-! I swear I could literally feel the secondhand awkwardness through the screen at that bit whereby WWX and JC suddenly came across LWJ and LXC in the corridors and had no way of avoiding them.
While this episode was technically about the 4 great cultivational sects trying to bring down WRH/the Wen sect and gossip swirling around WWX's miraculous return from the Burial Mounds, it basically just felt like a romcom whereby everyone else in a friend group was walking on eggshells due to the tension between certain members of the group (coughWangXianbreakupcough). XD Like JC demanding to know why WWX wanted to look for LWJ after the falllout between them in episode 20, what was going on with WWX and LWJ, whether WWX planned to never communicate with LWJ again etc.
I kinda like the symbolism of how JC and JYL are now consistently dressed in purple, as per the Jiang sect’s colours. Like now that their parents are dead and they have have been reunited again, the two of them have become the “face” of the Jiang sect.
Oh shit, WWX seems to have already started losing control of the demonic cultivation thing. AND JYL kept detecting traces of this. We already know all of this isn’t going to end well but isn’t this happening abit too soon?!
Oh shit X2, WRH looks like he is cooking up some diabolical zombie-related plan in his Villainous Abode. I... hope it wasn’t MY/JGY who helped WRH come up with that plan (see my review of episode 19). 0_0
Ok, I’m kinda loving WWX’s dramatic entrance (complete with special wind effects!) as he entered the meeting room where the others were having a discussion on how to attack WRH and how he casually dropped a few cryptic lines before leaving again. But I can also definitely see how/why this might piss the other characters off. Lol.
My favourite part of this episode was probably that philosophical discussion between the Twin Jades about how one can tell right from wrong if there are no set rules in the world to follow; how one would not necessarily know the answer to everything just because one reads many books etc.
The ending scene between LWJ and WWX killed me. Like why are they so bad at communicating with each other? Why does LWJ have to resort to drawing his sword to prove his point?! Why does WWX have to grin and evade LWJ’s questions/pretend not to know what LWJ was driving at??? GAHHH.
Overall: 8/10. I really liked how this episode fleshed out how WWX struggled and coped with dealing with everything after his return from the Burial Mounds. So this score would have been even higher if I weren’t so affected by all the underlying tension and potential for angst. Haha.

Buffy Thoughts - (S7 E16-E17)
After two slow months in the desert that was Angel Season 4, I am revived by two bloody glorious episodes of Buffy (Storyteller & Lies My Parents Told Me)

Episode 16 (Storyteller)
Oh my god. So I started off this episode with Andrew in his recliner, thinking, “you know, this is probably going to be a filler ep. but it seems like it’s going to be damn hilarious filler ep and after Angel, i’m 100% fine with that.”
And then it was damn hilarious while being extremely character insightful and MY GOD everything AtS’s been doing wrong in its tedious soul-sucking slog is done so, so right here. Like...
Complete narrative arc within 42 minutes - check
Previous joke character gaining heartbreaking dimension - check
Emotional touch-base with supporting cast - check
Hilarious mile-a-minute jokes + ship baiting slo-mo scene - check
Resolution of an series arc/existing plot point - check

Episode 17 (Lies My Parents Told Me)
Okay, I confess. I went into this one SUUUUUPER SPOILED.
But it was still amazing. Like “aaaaahhhhhhhh” amazing.
So yeah. I have an unofficial fanfic “rule” which basically goes, if you haven’t finished the series and you read some detail in a fanfic that’s cool, that’s a really cool head canon the author inserted. You read the same detail in another fanifc, that’s a really cool head canon the shipping community has. You read the same details in three, four, five different fics...
Yeah, that’s future episode content you haven’t gotten to yet.
Future episode content in this case being Spike’s mum and him trying to turn her and her going Oedipal on him so he has to kill/stake her. Still not entirely sure where the name “Anne” and the last name of “Pratt” come from since I’d assumed they were going to be in this episode. (I’m guessing Angel S5 and/or comics now?)
That said, I had no idea how the episode was going to frame the flashbacks. I thought it was going to essentially be Fool For Love 2: Electric Boogaloo with Buffy and Spike talking it out or something. So for the memories to be directly linked with his trigger was cool and unexpected. And the fact that his trigger song was the song his mom used to sing him is ~heartbreaking~ omg i love it.
Also I was not expecting them to deal with the Robin/Spike drama and Spike’s trigger this early. I thought it would be like, season finale stuff and eleventh hour drama to fuck them over. And I’m SUPER happy it’s not, but also a little nervous... like, I’m keeping my guard up, just incase the First has some other diabolical plan in mind, but ugggggh, this was such a great resolution. If they dragged it out, it’d just cheapen it.
Also also, special shout out to the set designers because that cross-covered shed was amazing.
Also also also, even going in spoiled, the actual bit when Spike’s mum turns on him was AMAZING. Just the background music and the lighting and the cuts between the two scenes... it was horrifying and beautiful and James Marsters just sold it.
Also also also also, I don’t care that there are no kissing scenes in Season 7. We’ve got Buffy repeated confronted by Giles and others about her relationship with Spike and she constantly, continuously defends him, which is SO MUCH more ship affirming than plain “I hate you” kisses.
Also also also also also, yay Drusilla. Also yay at her face when she realizes William wants to bring his mum along.
Also (final also), I absolutely love the self-acceptance Spike has with himself as the series progresses. It’s fascinating to see the difference between Angel/Angelus who are so torn apart they basically disassociate with each other, and Spike who owns up to the things he did and largely sees himself as the same person with/without the soul. (Will go more into this last bit in my next episode meta re: Angel S4, episode Morpheus which I just watched and was also AWESOME.)

Now let's see those MANY real obsessions.
1) Season's End - Our Prayers Fall Back to Earth
It's been 12 years since these guys dropped any new material and they released this awesome track. It's so good and haunting. I always love it when music talks of the struggles of the real world, ESPECIALLY when it get political. It opens your mind to what is really going on outside.
2) A Sound of Thunder - Who Do You Think We Are?
These guys are amazing. This track is low key a diss track to people always trying to define metal bands and put them in small boxes. A metal band is still a metal band no matter what subgenre they fall under. I love their campy songs like this one. They're always so fun.
3) Serpent & Seraph - Tears of Naviane
I discovered these guys through a compilation video on YT one day and fell in love. There's something about this track that is so hypnotic and amazing. It goes from being extremely aggressive to being extremely beautiful rapidly and the transition practically non-existent, but that's what I love about it.
4) Garbage - No Horses
This is the second song I've heard from these guys and it is completely different from Magnetized. It has a bit of a 90's industrial kind of vibe to it and I love it. Another song that is charged by the evils of the world around us. More specifically: police brutality.
5) Micky Huijsmans - New Horizons (Textures cover)
This is one of my favorites off Phenotype, and Micky put such an epic spin on it with this cover. I never expected her to do growls and I hope she brings them to a future End of the Dream album. It really shows multiple dimensions to her voice that EotD doesn't show and is amazing.
6) Synkvervet - Aurora
Another song I discovered from a compilation video on YT, this is a blackened symphonic metal band. This song is so beautiful and lovely. The contrast between their female singer and their male vocalist are so epic. Also, their female singer looks STUNNING in this video. Definitely am gonna check out more from these guys.
7) Little Dead Bertha - Cry of Mankind (My Dying Bride cover)
This was a random discovery on the recommended videos on YT and I need to hear more from them. It has a blackened doom metal vibe to it and their female singer's voice is so lovely. Not only do I need to check out more from these guys, but I need to finally listen to My Dying Bride. I still haven't listened to them yet!
8) Cradle of Filth - You Will Know the Lion By His Claw
This is their best single they've released for their upcoming album and probably one of the best songs they've released in the past 10 years. It's like an evolved form of classic CoF and I fucking love it. The last two minutes are absolutely INSANE. Dani's low growl is everything. So hyped for the new album!
9) The Great Discord - Omen
Everything these guys have released in line with their new album has been amazing. This song is pretty and so cool. They've really stepped their game up with this album. Not saying that Duende wasn't a good album, it was amazing, but they're definitely putting their names out there with this one and I can't wait to see what amazing opportunities come their way from it.
10) Russkaja - Alive
Really weird, bizarre, amazing, glorious, cheesy ska fused with punk and rock. I've heard a few songs from them, but haven't really gotten that deep into their works. I really need to change that. I love bands that don't take themselves seriously. Also, that EDM breakdown was extremely unexpected and dope af.
11) Aly & AJ - Take Me
This is their first song (under their names) in 10 YEARS and it's wonderful. When I found out that they dropped a new single, I nearly screamed. These girls were my childhood. I'm so hyped for the upcoming album and to see what direction it's gonna go in, because this is a blend of indie rock and 80's styled synthpop and I love it.
12) Corvyx - I Got You (Bebe Rexha cover)
I never heard the original, but I am OBSESSED with this guy's cover of this song. I've been a big of this guy for a minute now and I think this one is on the same level of favorites as his cover as I Don't Wanna Live Forever. His voice is so lovely in this song and I love the slight distortion. This song is such a fun one to just blast while driving.
13) Kari Rueslatten - Spellbound
This song is so pretty. It's such a simple song, but it's so pretty that you get hooked on it instantly. Such a great song to put on and just chill to. I can't wait to get around to listening to her new album.
14) Tristania - Aphelion
I've been on a big Tristania kick lately and this has been one of the songs I've been obsessed with by them. I really need to listen to their full discography again, because I'm not familiar with Morten's era with them. This song is just so beautiful and intense. The last two minutes are probably my favorite. It just escalates so quickly and ends on such a beautiful note.
Crushed Dreams
After getting a copy of World of Glass, when this song came on, I knew I would be listening to it non-stop for a hot minute. The intro, the choirs and the exit are so amazing and beautiful. This is definitely my favorite album from Vibeke's era with the band. It's so beautiful, raw, haunting and in your face.
15) Qveen Herby - Busta Rhymes
Amy is definitely reinventing herself with this new project. Karmin dabbled with hip hop a little bit, but this project is pure trip hop/hip hop and I'm loving it. And homegirl goes IN on the second verse. I really need to listen to their debut EP.
16) The Naked and Famous - All of This
I can't remember how I came across this song, but nonetheless, I love it. It wasn't all that interesting to me at first, but then it grew on me and became an obsession. It's such a simple pop rock track, but it's so fun and catchy and has a bit of a punk-ish flare to it. Really digging it and am gonna check out more from them.
17) Crimfall - Until Falls the Rain
I discovered these guys through Helena (I'm a big fan of her old project Tacere), but have only listened to Wildfire Season. This song is so powerful and beautiful. I know how cheesy this sounds, but this song is amazing to listen to when it's raining/storming outside. Such a perfect blend of symphonic and folk metal. Can't wait to hear their new album.
18) End of the Dream - Who Do You Think You Are
Finally listened to their new album, Until You Break, and I really enjoyed it. This and the track below are ones that definitely stood out to me on the album. This song has such a hard and raw proggy vibe to it and is so in your face. I also love the vocal lines in the chorus.
I Am Nothing
This song is so beautiful. It starts out so simple and pretty, but then it starts to escalate and it gets so powerful and raw near the end. I haven't heard a song like this one in a very long time and am so pleased with it. It really shows off just how much this band has grown since their first release.
19) Exit Eden - Rhapsodies in Black
I couldn't pick a particular song that I was obsessing with from them, so I just put the whole damn album on here! This album is absolutely AMAZING and I listened to it non-stop for little over a week. My two favorites are their covers of Paparazzi by Lady Gaga and Frozen by Madonna which features Simone Simons of Epica. Paparazzi is so unexpectedly heavy and intense and Frozen is just as beautiful as the original, but with a symphonic metal flare to it and I love that they kept the original vibe of the song with this cover.
Those are all my obsessions for the last two weeks of August. I promise the next installment won't be as long!

Chapter 5
PREFACE.
St. Luke, who had published his gospel, wrote also a second volume, which, from the first ages, hath been called the Acts of the Apostles. Not that we can look upon this work, as a history of what was done by all the apostles, who were dispersed in different nations; but we have here a short view of the first establishment of the Christian Church, a small part of St. Peter's preaching and actions, set down in the first twelve chapters, and a more particular account of St. Paul's apostolical labours, in the following chapters, for about thirty years, till the year 63, and the 4th year of Nero, where these acts end.
Chapter 5
The judgment of God upon Ananias and Saphira. The apostles are cast into prison.
1 But (about the year A.D. 33) a certain man, named Ananias, with Saphira, his wife, sold a field,

Ver. 1. It is believed by many of the Fathers, that the resolution which the faithful made of selling their property, and laying the price at the feet of the apostles, implied a vow of reserving nothing for themselves, but giving all to the community; and that the crime of Ananias and Saphira consisted in the violation of this vow; on which account they regarded them as sacrilegious, and plunderers of sacred things. See St. Basil, Serm. i. de instit. Monac.; St. Cyprian, lib. i. ad Quir. &c. --- For, without this supposition, we cannot, as Menochius justly remarks, account for the sudden and severe punishment inflicted on the offending parties.
2 And by fraud kept part of the price of the field, his wife being privy thereto, and bringing a certain part of it, laid it at the feet of the apostles.
Ver. 2. By fraud kept part. Ananias, and his wife Saphira, had made a promise or vow, to put into the common stock the price of what they had to sell. When they had sold the field, they resolved by mutual consent to keep for their private use part of the money, and to bring in the rest, as if they had received no more. The whole price being promised, and by that means consecrated to God, St. Augustine calls it a sacrilegious fraud, and St. Chrysostom, a theft of what was already made sacred to God. (Witham)

That is, no one forced thee to make such a promise. --- And being sold, was it not in thy power, and at thy free disposal, before such a promise? but promises and vows must be kept. Thou hast not lied to men, but to God, by lying to the Holy Ghost. 5 And Ananias hearing these words, fell down, and gave up the ghost. And great fear came upon all that heard it.
Ver. 5. Ananias ... fell down and gave up the ghost. St. Augustine says, this severe judgment was to strike a terror of such dissembling fraudulent dealings into the new Church. It was also to shew that St. Peter, and the apostles, had the gift of prophecy. (Witham) --- Origen thinks his death was occasioned by the sudden fright and shame, with which he was seized. Pliny relates a similar accident in the sudden death of Diodorus Dialecticus, lib. vii. cap. 53. --- Menochius and Cornelius a Lapide think, that God struck him interiorly, as Peter spoke. ... They were stricken with the scourge of death, that they might not be subject to eternal punishment." Top 20 Heavy Metal Albums of 2017
While it has been a tragic year in many respects (natural disasters, mass shootings, data breaches, a political hellscape, etc.), there has been more good music unleashed on the world than ever. I’ve spent the past few weeks trying to narrow down just the stuff I have had a chance to listen to to a top 20 list and finally gave up. So, this year, I am splitting my list in two: one of metal releases and one of everything else.
I’ll start with the metal releases. Several of these are new(er) bands I have discovered through Bandcamp and Youtube, but the majority are long-time favorites. Countries represented this year: USA (x7), Germany (x4), Sweden (x2), Japan (x2), Finland, Norway, Italy, Chile, and the U.K.
Without further ado, here are my top 20 fave metal records (and tapes) of 2017…
20. EVIL - Rites of Evil
Bands that can successfully mix old-school black metal with thrash and/or speed metal always get my attention and Evil from Japan do it pretty damn well. Elements of early (like, REALLY early) Sodom are combined with Hellhammer to great effect, with lots of cool change-ups and a very raw production style.
19. JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR - Stand Your Ground
From his early work with Virgin Steele and amazing solo album with Rhett Forrester (RIP) back in 1984, Jack Starr has had a long and varied career. I was expecting Stand Your Ground to be good, just based on the last record, but damn it is some really top-notch US power metal. Only a few bands are doing this kind of material justice and it’s great to see one of the scene’s legends still out there and at the top of their game.
18. JAG PANZER - The Deviant Chord
It’s been, what, six years since the last Jag Panzer record? Damn good to have them back though and worth the wait. The band’s brand of US power metal is still intact, with a good mix of the faster, heavier stuff and more expansive, melodic songs. It’s not the band’s best album, sure, but it is still a strong return after a long break.
17. RAM - Rod
Ram really knocked it out of the park with their previous album so Rod was bound to be a bit of a disappointment. Still, there are many great songs here and even the six-part conceptual piece that makes up half of the album works remarkably well. Classic heavy metal is alive and well.
16. SATYRICON - Deep Calleth Upon Deep
This one almost didn’t make my list because, frankly, I forgot it came out until I started looking back over the year. Which isn’t to say it isn’t memorable, only that I never got a copy of it to really give it a proper listen. Glad that I finally did, though, because it is a huge return to form after the rather disappointing eponymous release of 2013. The smoldering menace of Now, Diabolical is back in all its glory, with the drums possessing a particularly wonderful, organic thump.
15. MIDNIGHT - Sweet Death and Ecstasy
When it comes to filthy, punky black metal that worships at the altar of Venom, it is hard to beat Midnight. Having said that, No Mercy For Mayhem (2014) was a bit of a let-down after the still-brilliant Satanic Royalty (2011). Sweet Death and Ecstasy is right in between the two, with a couple of slower, more experimental cuts and fairly memorable songs in general.
14. WALPYRGUS - Walpyrgus Nights
Despite a logo and album art that looks more like black or doom metal, this band from Raleigh play a very potent brand of melodic metal with clean vocals and lots of guitar harmonies. Closest comparison I can think of is Immortal Soul-era Riot. Very catchy vocal lines, killer riffs, and strong songwriting all around make this one of the year’s most underrated albums.
13. ACCEPT - The Rise of Chaos
Accept pulled off a miracle by reforming without their iconic singer and then proceeding to release and tour 3 amazing albums in 5 years. While Stalingrad was the highpoint, Blind Rage was still a great album and The Rise of Chaos follows in similar fashion. It has a good mix of modern, heavier tracks like “No Regrets” and really classic-sounding cuts like “Analog Man.” One could argue that the band hasn’t progressed at all (and they would probably be the first to agree), but the release of another quality Accept record simply makes the world a better place.
12. KREATOR - Gods of Violence
Kreator are easy to take for granted, as they deliver an album every few years that is always solid, kick-ass thrash metal with killer production. There are a number of great thrash bands out there (new and old), but I think Kreator are probably the most proficient and dependable of the lot. Gods of Violence is definitely on par with Phantom Antichrist and delivers at least one instant concert classic with “Totalitarian Terror.”
11. MYRKUR - Mareridt
Multi-instrumentalist Amalie Bruun is really evolving her brand of melodic black metal with this record, her second full-length album. One thing I really appreciate about this one is that each song is very distinctive and incorporates many different instruments and vocal styles. The guest appearance by Chelsea Wolfe doesn’t hurt either. One of the few critical darlings that actually deserves the attention.
10. BOLIDO - Heavy Bombers
Chile is turning into a real hotbed for quality metal of all genres lately and Bolido is one of my favorite in the classic vein. They have a real talent for coming up with interesting riffs that are offbeat yet 100% metal. Just check out opening track “The Absolute Dominion of the Skies” and get hooked.
9. SATAN'S HALLOW - Satan's Hallow
The Midwest has been sourcing some great bands in recent years and Chicago’s Satan’s Hallow are right up there with the best of them. Their sound is very reminiscent of the NWOBHM, with plenty of catchy riffs, strong vocals and a healthy dose of speed now and then. More old-school metal for us aging headbangers!
8. ORDEN OGAN - Gunmen
While power metal as a whole has seen better days, certain bands are still out there delivering the goods and Germany’s Orden Ogan are one of my favorites. They manage to combine super-catchy melodies and huge choruses with fast and heavy riffage. Gunmen isn’t quite as good as 2015’s Ravenhead but it is damn close. Bonus: Liv Kristine guest vocal!
7. EMYN MUIL - Elenion Ancalima
Following in the footsteps of Summoning, Italy’s Emyn Muil create epic pieces with a Viking metal flair and lyrics and imagery straight from Middle Earth. Grim vocals are used as another instrument to add to the atmosphere and the songs remain engaging throughout, despite their long running times.
6. VENOM INC. - Ave
I’m not sure exactly what people were expecting from this release but I was actually quite pleased. It continues in the vein of the Prime Evil-era Venom (naturally) but with a bit more of the ferocity of the early years. It is great to see these guys out there playing the classics on stage but I was happy they were also able to deliver a high-quality release of new tunes, too.
5. OUTRAGE - Raging Out
Long one of my favorite thrash bands, Japan’s Outrage went through some interesting turns in the 90s (who didn’t), but they have really returned to form with the last couple releases and Raging Out is one of their best to date. Pure old-school thrash with modern production. Still has some of the Metallica influence from the early days but it’s much less obvious now.
4. MIDNIGHT RIDER - Manifestation
I remember getting this band’s first EP about a decade ago and loving their mix of early Priest and Sabbath but then never heard from them again. Until 2017, when this full album comes out of nowhere and not only lives up to the earlier work but exceeds it in every way. If you ever wish Priest had recorded more albums in the vein of Stained Class and Sad Wings of Destiny, this album is for you. The production and mix are perfect, too, coming across as 1978 with more clarity and impact.
3. VAMPIRE - With Primeval Force
When Vampire first hit the scene, I was skeptical due to the hype and anonymity of the members, plus the debut was kind of underwhelming. Fortunately, their sophomore effort is leaps and bounds better, taking their raw, old-school thrash sound to new levels. They mix speed and brutality with a surprising amount of melody and skilled musicianship and the results are a frenzy of headbanging goodness.
2. MAUSOLEUM GATE - Into a Dark Divinity
This Finnish outfit has been going for a few years now and never disappoints with their wonderfully eclectic mix of heavy metal, 70s hard rock, doom, and organ-heavy weirdness. Hints of Uriah Heep, BOC, Judas Priest, and Candlemass all shine through, but no description can really capture the band’s unique sound. Every track is epic in feel, even the shorter ones.
1. SANHEDRIN - A Funeral For The World
The cover and title scream ‘doom metal’ but Brooklyn trio Sanhedrin tend more toward the likes of classic Diamond Head or… I don’t even know what. They cover a lot of ground and, yes, even some doom territory with the title cut, but it’s never anything less than killer, memorable metal. Can’t wait to see what this band does in the future.
As I said earlier, narrowing this list down to just 20 was a major chore. Of the bands that were very serious contenders but just didn’t quite make it are the latest from: ALDIOUS, ALPHA TIGER, ARCH ENEMY, BATTLE RAIDER, CONDOR, CULT OF EIBON, DEMON EYE, THE FERRYMEN, GOD DETHRONED, ICE AGE, L.A. GUNS, LADY BEAST, LIMBONIC ART, LYZZARD, MALLEUS, NIGHT, NIGHT VIPER, OBITUARY, OVERKILL, PORTRAIT, SEVEN KINGDOMS, SHAKRA, SLAEGT, SORCERER, STALKER, STRIKER, TYFON'S DOOM, URN, VHÄLDEMAR, VINTERSORG, and VULTURE.
On top of that, there were many excellent demos, 7” singles, and EPs this year. My favorites came from BOMBER, COVEN, CRIME, CROWN OF COMMAND, CULT OF EIBON, DREADFUL FATE, FORGED IN BLACK, FREEWAYS, HAUNT, KROSSFYRE, LUCIFER'S HAMMER, MIDNIGHT PREY, ORNASSI PAZUZU, POUNDER, ROCK GODDESS, and SPEEDCLAW. Rock Goddess in particular was nice to see back in action and I hope they manage to release a full album next year because the EP was very promising (despite the less than sterling production).
As good as the year was, I think 2018 has the potential to be a stunner.
