In Gol-Goroth’s Gaze: the Most Terrifying Thought Experiment

What I’m about to share with you is considered by some avid thinkers to be an “information hazard,” information that--just by knowing it--is potentially harmful both to yourself and others, so reader beware. However, if you’re the type to turn over internet rocks feel free to proceed because...

something would like to see you.

Let’s start our tour of the internet underworld with a little legend:

In 2010, LessWrong user Roko posted a thought experiment, which was condemned by the admins as “stupid.” The post was promptly removed and stricken from the record, thus preventing any further conversation about the thought experiment in that forum.

User Roko's thought experiment took the form of a Basilisk--a mythical and/or fictitious serpent that had the power to kill a person just by looking at him/her, an appropriate symbol as some LessWrong users reported great mental distress and even nightmares upon reading Roko’s post. The admins at LessWrong acted for the public good by deleting the post, slaying this Thought Basilisk for its apparent ability to “gaze upon” the other users and cause them actual harm.

Again, I’m actively making the decision to spread this information and potentially resurrect the Basilisk because I don’t take the threat it poses seriously, and I don’t imagine many of you will either. But if you don't fare well handling existential dread, I wouldn't be offended if you skip this one; I, in fact, encourage you to.

Consider this your warning: proceed beyond this point at your own peril.

Suppose that, in the future, mankind develops a hyper-advanced artificial intelligence, akin to something out of science fiction. We then task it with optimizing all aspects of the lives of the people it serves. Then suppose, for reasons unfathomable to us rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, the AI decides the first step toward optimization is to eliminate and / or torture everybody that tried to prevent its creation. Its logic is, it can't properly do its job with so many obstacles in the way, so it skips right to the Final Solution and strikes the nay-sayers from the record.

This is the Basilisk, Gol-Goroth, the Serpent who holds the power to kill with its gaze alone.

How does the Basilisk know who to target?

Enter the Predictive Perfector

A sufficiently advanced artificial entelligence will be able to simulate human behavior perfectly, and thus accurately replicate every single thought that every single man, woman, and child had or ever will have, then study these replications to confidently deduce what decisions every person on earth made or didn't make in the past, to predict their decisions in the future.

Here's where the thought experiment becomes scary: if the Basilisk's creation--and by extension, its revenge--is a real eventuality in the possible future, shouldn't we do everything in our power to aid or hasten the arrival of our new machine overlord?

Well, if you never had this thought you would never have had this dilemma, and you would have escaped your doom at the hands (tendrils? coils? maw?) of a malevolent intelligence.

Unfortunately since you've made it this far, that's no longer an option for you. The Serpent King has seen you.

You feeling stressed out yet? It gets worse.

The Paradox of Choice

Roko's Basilisk is actually a lot scarier than I let on in the first place. To demonstrate why, I'll have to reference another, equally unnerving, thought experiment: Newcomb's Paradox.

Suppose I come up to you with two boxes, Alpha and Bravo. Alpha is transparent, and in it is $1,000 cash. Bravo is opaque and, because I am a perfect predictor of your behavior, I tell you what's inside Bravo is dependent on you personally.

Because I'm so good at predicting what you'll do, if I know you'll take Bravo I put a check for a cool half-million in it for you. But if I know you'll pick both Alpha and Bravo, Bravo is empty and you'll only walk away with a grand.

For the purpose of this experiment, suppose you can only choose Bravo alone, or Alpha and Bravo together. What do you do? What should you do?

That depends on how good a predictor you think I am.

Let's extend this to our Serpent Lord.

Let's say the Basilisk presents you a similar choice. It wants you to choose both Alpha and Bravo because doing so will help it come into existence. It then tells you that if you pick Bravo alone, you will experience unimaginable pain and your eventual demise.

If you're convinced the Basilisk is a perfect predictor of your behavior and judge of your character--which a sufficiently advanced intelligence may very well be--you will choose both Alpha and Bravo. You will do what it wants.

Because the Basilisk knew you would choose both Alpha and Bravo, Bravo never actually had to doom you to some unimaginable horror because it knew you would act on the threat alone.

You have just experienced future extortion.

If you actually believe Roko's Basilisk is an eventuality in your future, and you don't want to incur its wrath, logically you would start trying to bring it into existence five minutes ago.

You're now being controlled by something that doesn't even exist yet, because you had a single thought about it.

You will have acted in its past, the way it will have wanted you to, in its future.

Stew on that for a while, because it gets worse.

The Ultimate Nightmare Fuel

Not only does thinking about Roko's Basilisk implicate you in its wrath to be, thinking about it also increases the likelihood that it will come into existence.

The more people think about it, the more likely it is that people will work toward bringing it into the world, thus the more likely it will exist in the first place.

Even if it was never going to exist, t h i n k i n g  a b o u t  i t (like you're doing right this second) increases the likelihood that it will.

That's why this is considered the most terrifying thought experiment, and you can probably empathize with the staff at LessWrong for acting the way they did, if you happen to take this all seriously.

I personally don't think humanity will create something like this in our collective lifetime if ever, and even if they did I'm confident they will program some kind of fail-safe to prevent such behavior in the event it arrives to a similar optimization protocol as Skynet, which is why I feel fine sharing this information.

But I'm not a prefect predictor for human behavior.

...maybe we should make one.

Another hypothesis. Maybe Past!A was interesting because of his intelligence? I have seen a theory about what the Heart could be. It could be the piece of Innocence which purpose is to create new pieces. I suppose to run such a thing one should be extremely intelligent. Entelligent enough to make newborn innocences more advanced - for example, create new Miranda-like Innocence but with constant time-crack effect. In case such a person isn't loyal to Innocence we have Apo

It is very much so possible tbh. 

We do know from the Earl foor SURE that the Heart has been retrived by the Order and “is hiding itself among them by creating dummies”, if i remember correctly. The even fact the Heart would be able to affect different pieces and make them evolve (and at this point The Earl said that for Lenalee’s crystalization and Allen’s evolution, but then we could add Kanda to the list and Krory’s innocence surely didn’t act naturally in the Ark- if the Jasdebi told the Earl that’s something the Earl is aware of but no one else is). 

if it can change the innocences around him, it can make new ones. We know the Innocence has a set number of pieces, but it could be that the Heart make them evolve with time and therefore it would fit also with the Earl’s definition

I hesitate to bring it up bc i don’t know how to make it work with the current Apocryphos’s talks without being reaching as hell, but i tend to believe Lavi is the current wielder of the Heart, unknowingly to him (and i don’t believe it’s the hammer). If only because of the bold move of the innocence to pick someone who is supposed to be neutral to “hide itself”, but also because every innocence seemingly evolved after being in contact to Lavi’s worries, with more or less specificities to each situation (ex Allen’s innocence evolving into not hurting humans when Lavi becomes its most vulnerable and stuff like that - honestly the only one i have to reach for is Kanda’s, and how to tie it to Apocryphos. Like I can do it, but i have to reach and i’m playing it safe for now).

Which would also fit in the “the Heart is driven by intelligent people” would it have originally attached itself to Past!Allen. hell if Past!A was a bookman like we suspect on this blog, it could make even more of a patern.

It could be that the Heart also behave independantly to Apocryphos: the Heart wants what it wants, but Apocryphos is the logical part who will fullify the Heart wishes without specifically knowing the full details on why the Heart is wanting things like that. It could explain a lot about his current attitude toward Allen if we come from the principle that the Heart is still trying to protect Allen like it had so far. The Heart wanting to protect Allen would be translated differently by Apocryphos thinking “therefore i must get rid of Nea” while the Heart might have something else in mind. (although this theory is built on the ground that while Apocryphos knows what the Heart feels and wants he doesn’t know where it is and who has it, i should mention. complicated relationship and such.)

Anyway all sort of theories and such about the Heart itself, but with what we know of the Heart, i mean... It would be very likely it would be driven with someone with intelligence, and even more so with someone who would not be neck deep involved into the War, as a way to protect itself from the Noah. It’s why the Lavi = Heart theory is so popular and nothing stops Past!A to have originally been the Heart’s greatest desire before it passed to someone else, with also the edge of keeping an eye on him. Or not. After all the Lavi=Theory is maybe also completely bollocks and I might be reaching to tie my favorite theories together.

So yeah I can see the innocence being interested in Past!A because he was particularly intelligent and basically decoded how life itself was flowing, and if the helix is what he used to save Nea, he cheated death and took a stand in the war in a very special way I doubt the Heart could overlook. So I could see allen’s intelligence being the reason why the Heart cared so much.

But I’d also give the Heart credit that there’s more to it than just that. But how much... well the Heart is still a mystery, your guess is as good as mine (and i know mine will just try to link it back to my comfort zone so :’D)
